ETC Blog ensemblecincy.wordpress.com 10 • song who'slist who in the iliad
“Just because you leave someone doesn’t mean you’re not…in…a relationship. With them. Somehow. For the rest of your life.” These words, which Emma utters to Ulysses, remind me of the words from another beautiful play, I Never Sang for My Father by Robert Anderson. In that play, a son, who is reflecting on the loss of his Father, states that “Death ends a life…but it does not end a relationship, which struggles on in the survivor’s mind…towards some resolution, which it never finds.” These references to human connection, which transcend time and space, are fascinating to me. I have come to believe that any true unity between two people never ceases. I believe we become part of each other and that we are forever joined as long as we live and beyond. Sharr White paints a portrait of two souls seeking some closure and, dare I say, comfort. He does so, however, with the harsh light of mortality and a scorching desert sun, square in their faces. He sets them at the base of a mountain and names the play for one of the highest mountains in the world. Perhaps he is giving us a not too subtle metaphor for the ascent we make when trying to truly understand another person. Love is an entirely different thing. Love is much easier. Sharr White’s The Other Place, which we presented last season, crept into my mind and stayed there. It is a reminder of how precious and unique our realities are. Annapurna is a haunting tale of how our lives can and do change in a moment, how truly fragile our existence is, how we are catapulted to catastrophe without warning, and how we survive. In the midst of the chaos of the set—which Ulysses calls his purgatory—we find, amongst the neglected trailer, two people whose spirits are as cluttered as their surroundings. Casting Regina Pugh (who gave me The Other Place to read, hence introducing me to Sharr White’s work) embodies the immediacy of the character of Emma in Annapurna, the way she embodied Julianna in The Other Place. She is fearless. Dennis Parlato, likewise, has never backed down from fighting to bring every character to life he has played in every production I have directed with him, since appearing in Traveler in the Dark (my professional directing debut decades ago). If you are going to scale a mountain, you need able and strong climbers. Regina and Dennis have made this journey to the summit a memorable one. I hope it will be memorable to you and I thank you for joining us on this adventure into the crevasse of the soul. -D. Lynn Meyers

Opening  October  2017!
Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati's new facilities will include a greatly expanded lobby, larger box office, additional restrooms, a dedicated bar and concession area, and new seats, as well as provide more space for educational programming and venue rentals. Once completed, ETC's buildings will be consolidated into one complex, cementing ETC’s position as an artistic cornerstone for the region and infusing further energy into the revitalization and economic vibrancy of historic Over-the-Rhine.
$2 million is needed to reach the public fundraising goal that will help bolster operations during and after construction for the new facilities. Every dollar counts and ETC has a wide range of naming and sponsorship opportunities available, giving donors a starring role in the future success of the theatre. For more information, please contact Julie Carpenter, Development Manager, at jcarpenter@ensemblecincinnati.org or (513) 421-3555 x19.
