DIRECTOR'S NOTES "Nearly all of the elements that make up Earth and its life forms were created inside the heart of a dying star as it exploded out into the atmosphere." This quote shared by one of the characters in Fly By Night and attributed to an astronomy book gives me pause. I have heard this idea over the years from very diverse sources, from Carl Sagan to my sixth grade science teacher: we are made of star stuff. The stars have played an important role in our society. When we call someone a “star” we mean to say they excel at something (acting, sports, scholastics, etc...). Stars were our original MapQuest—oceans were sailed beneath them, and fields were planted with their influence. We even wish on stars and believe that somehow they can help us along on our path. But in our nonstop 24/7 world, I wonder if we remember that the stars are there. So much man-made illumination has been created that the heavens’ guiding light has been all but obscured. Fly By Night stopped me in my tracks as I read it because it hit a place in my heart that I had been neglecting for a while. This story, this music, is about faith and loss; it is about love, trust, and something above and beyond us that plays a silent, almost hidden role as our lives play out. For me, it’s never about just one play, but about a season: what stories can I share with you that may linger long after the stage lights go out? I believe Fly By Night is such a story. I loved the rehearsal process when we constantly found new connections—tiny though they were, connections nonetheless. My hope is that this story will connect with you, that you will recognize the invisible world that connects us—a world that reaches past the immediately visible and fills us with wonder born in the heart of a star, allowing each of us to shine a little brighter.

INTRODUCING ETC ESSENTIALS ETC Essentials is a conversation series with local scholars and community members that explores the themes and context of our productions before the third Sunday matinee performance. This FREE program begins at 1:00 pm before the 2:00 pm matinee.

JOURNEY TO THE STARS  |  SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 Fly by Night asks are our lives fate or destiny? What is written in the stars? Join Cincinnati Observatory experts for a discussion on star navigation and learn the fascinating story of how Cincinnati became the Birthplace of American Astronomy. DARK COMEDY  |  FEBRUARY 10, 2019 With a wicked sense of humor, Ripcord is a deeply satisfying and vastly entertaining story of two utterly mismatched women thrown together by circumstance. Join Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers as she talks about dark comedy and how morbid humor is often an element of satire. MARRIAGE IN THE 21ST CENTURY  |  MARCH 24, 2019 Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll's House scandalized audiences with its 1879 debut when, in its final scene, protagonist Nora shockingly decides to leave her husband and children. Some claim it's an argument against marriage. If that is the case, then A Doll's House, Part 2 could be an argument for it. Join a panel of local marriage counselors for a discussion about marriage in 21st-century society. AUTO INDUSTRY 101  |  MAY 5, 2019 Dominique Morisseau's Skeleton Crew is her third play about Detroit, the epicenter of American motor manufacturing and her hometown. The tristate region, too, has felt the effect of production plants opening and closing. Join employees from local Ford, Honda, and Toyota plants as they share their perspectives on the state of the automotive industry. T-E-A-M: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SPORTS  |  JUNE 23, 2019 What does it take to create a team? What does it take to stay mentally and physically prepared for the game? The Wolves depicts a girls indoor soccer team, but how realistic is its portrayal? Educators from Xavier University’s Sports Management Program and University of Cincinnati’s Sports Psychology department will discuss what makes a team and what makes an athlete. Space is limited! Reserve tickets through the ETC Box Office at (513) 421-3555

THE GREAT NORTHEAST BLACKOUT OF 1965 Breaking News! November 9, 1965 On this chilly autumn evening in the midst of rush-hour traffic, The City That Never Sleeps has been brought to a standstill by massive power failures. "The people of New York have taken [the blackout] by and large with good grace." — Frank McGee, NBC News "The streets filled with hundreds of thousands of homeward-bound commuters, their shadowy forms clustered on the sidewalks, the windows of skyscrapers dark, all traffic lights out, traffic jammed bumper-to-bumper on major streets, the headlights from automobiles the only light. It was frightening at first, but only for a few minutes because (amazingly) New Yorkers adjusted very rapidly to the situation. As we drove down Madison Avenue, we found that at almost every intersection a young man had appeared. He shed his coat and jacket (because he was more visible in a white shirt), and was directing traffic. These self-appointed traffic cops miraculously managed to avert any major accidents that we know of at this point." — Gabe Pressman, NBC News "I was in the Time Square area (where the Broadway theatre district is). The lights in that area have gone on and off with heartbreaking regularity for some time, but never have they been off completely, as they were tonight." — Jim Harts, NBC News "In front of the Paramount Theater, a young man met his date, kissed her and asked, 'What would you like to do tonight?' [in spite of the blackout]." — Joseph Herzberg, The New York Times

18 •

"One important light did not go out tonight: The torch on the Statue of Liberty. Standing lonely while all this was going on, a shaft of light in the waters just south of the darkened island of Manhattan." —Gabe Pressman, NBC News

When and where did the lights go out?

On November 9, 1965, at approximately 5:27pm (EST) New England, New York State, parts of other states as far west as Michigan, and across the Canadian border into Ontario (over 80,000 square miles) lost power, and some areas remained powerless for up to 13 hours.

What happened?

The especially cold weather in Ontario, Canada, on November 9 caused the electrical systems in Ontario to run at peak capacity. A small variation of power coming from the interconnected power lines in New York caused a faulty relay in Ontario, overloading both the Ontario and New York grids, resulting in mass blackout.

Who was affected by the blackout?

Over 30 million people were without power, including more than 800,000 people stranded on paralyzed subway trains underground. To read more about the Great Northeast Blackout of 1965, visit our blog: www.ensemblecincy.wordpress.com
