DIRECTOR'S NOTES When I heard ETC was thinking about Pipeline by Dominique Morriseau, I was hoping I would get the opportunity to come back to Cincinnati and bring it off the page to the stage. It is always an honor working on Dominique's plays and I have had that honor several times. What better place than ETC to do that? Especially a play that means so much to so many. Since workshopping the original script with Dominique in Chicago, I have watched this powerful play affect so many young, old, black, white, and brown, in large and small venues. I am truly honored to be back in Cincinnati for this one. Thank you, Lynn and the ETC family. It's always a pleasure. -Ron OJ Parson

The school-to-prison pipeline describes the national trend that has more overtly surfaced in the past few decades of harsh school disciplinary policies feeding young people into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Minor infractions such as uniform violations or talking back can result in a trip to the principal’s office for most students, yet these same actions can result in much more severe consequences for others. Excessive suspensions and expulsions precipitate a barrage of even more negative outcomes for students, often leading to dropping out of school altogether, a factor that makes them more likely to be incarcerated. Although this trend can affect any child, it is more prominent with children who are impoverished, have a history of neglect or abuse, or have a developmental disability. Additionally, children of color are disproportionately disciplined in school, despite statistics demonstrating they do not misbehave more than their peers. According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), “A student who has been suspended from school is more than three times as likely to drop out in the first two years of high school than a student who has never been suspended.” In dropping out, this often affects their ability to be employed and gain a living wage, impacting the paths their futures take. In Dominique Morisseau's drama, Pipeline, a young black man, Omari, has his academic journey at a private school jeopardized due to a conflict that occurred on school grounds. When his parents find out, his mother Nya—an educator at a public school— blames herself. While portrayed differently by the school, Omari’s act of self-defense pushes him to blame the school system as a whole for the repercussions following the incident. For students more susceptible to the pipeline, incidents like this often have a more significant impact. People in and outside the academic system are fighting this ever-growing pipeline. Locally, organizations like Breakthrough Cincinnati and SuperSeeds are working to create positive, safe, transformational spaces to further education for affected students. On a national scale, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Education issued guidance urging schools to offer training programs for all faculty and staff on alternatives to zero-tolerance policies, becoming more aware of innate bias, and the importance of counteracting racial and ethnic stereotypes (ADL). For more information on the school-to-prison pipeline and how to make change in our community, visit www.breakthroughcincinnati.org or superseeds.foundation.
