Originally presented by New York Stage and Film and Vassar in the Powerhouse Season, Summer 2016. Playwrights Horizons Theater School produced a workshop of The Wolves in 2015 in association with Clubbed Thumb, where the play had been developed previously.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES Sometimes a play whispers in your ear when you read it. It touches your heart and gets you to think about the world a little differently. Sometimes a play roars off the page and pierces your imagination and makes your heart beat faster. The Wolves is such a play. Frankly, I have never read anything like it. That is quite the statement given the thousands of scripts I have read in my career.

The first thing you read when you pick up the script is a quote from Gertrude Stein, “We are always the same age inside.” Then, in her own words, Sarah DeLappe tells us the following: "I thought of this play as a war movie. Instead of young men preparing for battle, we watch a team of young women warming up for their soccer game. There’s a captain, a rebel, an innocent, a recent recruit, a common enemy. The arc follows an escalation of blood and visceral both in the content of their speech and the actual sustained injuries and traumas.

Of course, their battlefield is a carpet of artificial grass."

This is a not a gentle coming-of-age play; it’s neither sweet, nor assuring, but it is confident. Sarah DeLappe knows women—young women—and what makes them the warriors that take this nation and this world to the next level. It examines and brutalizes friendships, it shows us that politics is personal and passion runs the gamut from Middle Earth to Middle America with the hope of a stop in Disney World.

This play is wide awake with ambition. Words are weapons (some, ugly weapons) as we play offense, others kindly defensive. Find yourself on this team and as this performance plays out. What position do you play now? What position will you play in the future?

We are the wolves, you and me. We play our positions in this world as a team. We win some, we lose some, but the drive to move down that field, to take charge for a great outcome, is a force that moves us forward. I hope your heart beats a little faster as you watch and that you don’t look away for a moment.

THE RISE OF WOMEN'S SOCCER IN THE UNITED STATES Though women have been playing competitive soccer (aka football throughout most of the world) in the United Kingdom since the early 20th century, soccer is still a relatively young professional sport in the United States.

Women’s soccer was restricted to gym class at U.S. colleges and universities in the early 20th century. The first women’s league (The Graig Club Girls Soccer League) was established in 1951, and from there, the sport began to slowly grow in popularity. The passage of Title IX legislation in 1972 marked a watershed moment for women's sports, as it mandated that federally-funded institutions, such as public schools, provide equitable sports opportunities to girls and boys, women and men. Prior to Title IX, only one in 27 girls played sports; in 2016, two in five girls were playing sports. Title IX brought recognition and support to existing women's soccer teams and clubs at the college and university level and set the stage for the U.S. women's team's dominance internationally.

More women joined teams during the 1980s, leading to the first women’s national team in 1983, though they were not able to play in an international championship until 1985. The 1991 women’s World Cup was a surprising victory for the U.S. women’s soccer team, leading to greater investments by the United States Soccer Federation (est. 1913), further legitimizing the sport and providing more resources. Because of these resources, the U.S. National Women’s Soccer League was established in 1995.

The U.S. women’s soccer team's stunning win in the 1999 World Cup championship was a galvanizing moment not only for soccer, but also for women's sports in general. More than 90,000 people watched the game—the largest crowd women’s sports had ever seen.

Midfielder/defender Brandi Chastain's iconic game-winning penalty kick—that indelible moment she spontaneously whipped off her jersey and fell to her knees in her sports bra, fists clenched and arms flexed—ignited unprecedented national interest in women's sports, at once becoming a symbol of strength for women around the world and an equalizing moment in male and female sports.

Despite the fact this move was so common in men's soccer, Chastain was also criticized by some for this display of excitement because it was “inappropriate” and drew people’s attention away from the win—a double standard, to be sure.

The 1999 World Cup win inspired more young women throughout the U.S. to start playing soccer and the first professional women’s league in the U.S.

was established shortly thereafter in 2001. Today, the U.S. women's national soccer team is ranked number one in the world, having won three World Cup championships—the reigning record—and four Olympic championships. Their success is in stark contrast to the men's team, which has struggled internationally.

Two decades after their historic win, the U.S. women’s soccer team continues the fight for equality, this time on the payscale, and filed suit against the U.S. Soccer Federation in federal court on March 8, 2019 (Women’s Day), charging gender discrimination. Even though their male counterpart has never won the Olympics or a World Cup (not even qualifying for the 2018 World Cup), the women’s team players are paid less than a third of what the men’s players receive. Although this pay gap can be traced, in part, to the difference in revenue the teams generate (along with the lack of a lucrative national television contract for the National Women's Soccer League). Nevertheless, the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team persists, seeking to win the financial recognition their skills and popularity deseve, all the while staking its claim about women’s place in today’s culture.

As The Wolves battle it out on the ETC stage this June, the U.S. women’s soccer team will defend their title at the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 with games on June 11, 16, and 20 (with the final in sight on July 7). Hopefully, these strong success stories of women’s soccer in the U.S. will spur renewed positive change in the sports arena for women all over the world.

THE CAST MAGGIE CRAMER (#46) is thrilled to be back at Ensemble Theatre after completing the Professional Acting Apprenticeship last season. Some of her recent credits include Failure: A Love Story and The Dancing Princesses, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati; Always Plenty of Light at the Starlight All Night Diner, Know Theatre of Cincinnati; and Dry Land at Liberty Exhibition Hall, which she co-produced in partnership with Planned Parenthood. Originally from Minneapolis, she received her BA in theatre from Loyola University Chicago. She would like to thank Mom, Dad, Anna, Shelley, Hannah, Ami, and Socks. Special thanks to ETC and Lynn for the tremendous opportunity and continued support.

AVERY DEUTSCH (#2) is a Manhattan-based actor and is so happy to be making her Ensemble Theatre debut! She was a member of the 2018-2019 Professional Training Company at Actors Theatre of Louisville, where some of her credits include We’ve Come to Believe (part of the 43rd Humana Festival), A Christmas Carol, and The Patriot which she wrote and performed for the Solo Mio Festival.

CAST, continued MAYA FARHAT (#14) is thrilled to be back at Ensemble Theatre having last appeared in Fly By Night. She is a proud alumna of Xavier University and was a member of Ensemble Theatre’s Professional Acting Apprenticeship Program.

Some of her recent credits include Dryland, Liberty Exhibition Hall; Ruthless (part of Serials!), Know Theatre of Cincinnati; and The Bureau (2018 Audience Pick), Cincinnati Fringe Festival. She also appeared in Mariah Carey's Hallmark movie A Christmas Melody and has done commercial work for Hulu.

ANNIE FITZPATRICK (Soccer Mom) last appeared at Ensemble Theatre in This Random World. Other favorite ETC credits include Luna Gale, Hands on a Hardbody, Next Fall, Rabbit Hole, and String of Pearls. Her most recent production was The Roommate at American Stage. Her other credits include A Prayer for Owen Meany, To Kill A Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice, A Christmas Carol, and Hank Williams: Lost Highway, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Richard III, Death of a Salesman, Little Women, A Man for All Seasons, and Blithe Spirit, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company; and Silent Sky, Pluto, and Collapse, Know Theatre. She has worked with various regional theatres including The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Geva Theatre, Florida Stage, and Florida Studio.

Her television and film credits include Chicago P.D., Those Who Kill, Army Wives, The Old Man and the Gun, Fun Size, and Milk Money.

MALIYAH GRAMATA-JONES (#00) makes her Ensemble Theatre debut with this production. After years of touring Japan, Germany, Poland, and Canada as an Arts Ambassador, she returned to her Cincinnati roots and immersed herself in education and local arts. While entering her second semester at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (where she studies Communication Design), Ms. Gramata-Jones took the stage in Red Bike at the Know Theatre of Cincinnati. She feels extremely blessed to be fostered by ETC while crafting and continuing her acting career.

VICTORIA HAWLEY (#8) is overjoyed to play on the Ensemble Theatre stage in this production! She is a graduate of Northern Kentucky University and was a member of ETC’s Professional Acting Apprentice Company.

She was recently seen in A Small Fire and Frankenstein at Falcon Theatre, and wrote, produced, and performed in All We Have Borne as part of the 2018 Cincinnati Fringe Festival. She is proud to be an Education Associate with ETC’s Education Department. Ms. Hawley would like to thank Lynn, the cast, and the crew for bringing this wonderful story to life. BECCA HOWELL (#11) is delighted to return to the Ensemble Theatre stage, where she was last seen in Red Velvet, The Humans, and Bloomsday. After graduating from Northern Kentucky University, she completed Ensemble Theatre's Professional Acting Internship Program. She recently appeared in Macbeth at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. Her Chicago credits include The Wolves (Joseph Jefferson Award, Best Ensemble), Goodman Theatre; Born Yesterday, Remy Bumppo Theatre Company; Deirdre of the Sorrows, City Lit Theatre; Mary Shelley Sees the Future, Runaways Lab Theater; and For Annie, The Sound. She has also appeared on television in Chicago P.D. on NBC. She is a proud graduate of the Penn State School of Theatre and the British American Drama Academy. Ms. Joyce is represented by DDO Artists. She would like to thank Lynn, Shannon, and ETC for their constant support and love.

KAYLA MARIE KLAMMER (#13) is a current member of Ensemble Theatre’s Professional Acting Apprenticeship Program and is thrilled to be making her main stage debut!

She was born and raised in rural Nebraska and studied at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a double major in Theatre Performance and Dance. After graduation, she performed throughout the country with different theaters, and spent seven months in Costa Rica interning for a nonprofit organization. Ms. Klammer understudied for Fly By Night, Ripcord, and A Doll’s House, Part 2 at Ensemble Theatre. She sends love to her sweet family and friends for always supporting her from near and far.

KATIE MITCHELL (#25) is a Cincinnati native and attended Xavier University where she majored in Theatre Performance. She was a member of Ensemble Theatre’s Professional Acting Apprenticeship Program during the 2017-2018 season and toured with the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company during the 2018-2019 season. Some of her credits include Larry 13:2, Cincinnati Fringe Festival; In Love and Warcraft, The Carnegie; and understudy roles in Hedwig and the Angry Inch and The Humans, ETC. THE PLAYWRIGHT SARAH DELAPP'S (Playwright) play The Wolves premiered Off-Broadway at The Playwrights Realm, following an engagement at New York Stage and Film, and development at Clubbed Thumb and Great Plains Theatre Conference.

The Wolves received the American Playwriting Foundation's inaugural Relentless Award, and was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and the Yale Drama Series Prize.

Fellowships and developmental support include The MacDowell Colony, The Ground Floor, LCT3 Playwright in Residence, Ars Nova Play Group, Page One Fellowship at The Playwrights Realm, SPACE on Ryder Farm, and Sitka Fellows Program. Ms. DeLapp received an MFA from Brooklyn College.

THE DIRECTOR D. LYNN MEYERS (Director) is the Producing Artistic Director of Ensemble Theatre, where she has directed over 80 world and regional premieres, including Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Legend of Georgia McBride, Hands on a Hardbody, Detroit ’67, I Am My Own Wife, Next to Normal, and The Dancing Princesses. She began her career as the Associate Artistic Director at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, has directed Off-Broadway at the York Theatre, and has directed extensively throughout the US and Canada. As a member of the Casting Society of America, Ms. Meyers's recent feature credits include Carol, The Old Man & the Gun, and The Public, in addition to serving as the Location Casting Director for The Shawshank Redemption. She was named a finalist for the Zelda Fichandler National Award in 2011, is a past recipient of the YWCA Career Woman of Achievement Award, and recipient of the 2018 Rosa F. and Samuel B. Sachs Fund Prize for her regional arts impact and leadership.

THE PRODUCTION TEAM BRANDON T. HOLMES (Production Stage Manager) is currently in his seventh season with Ensemble Theatre. He has stage managed with The Lexington Theatre Company for the past two summers, and he served as an Assistant Stage Manager with Music Theatre Wichita for four seasons, where he worked on over twenty productions including Miss Saigon, Sunset Boulevard, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Disney’s The Little Mermaid. He served as Production Stage Manager for LOOK Musical Theatre in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 2010, he relocated to Cincinnati and spent two seasons with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. His favorite regional credits include Legally Blonde, Violet, Thunder Knocking on the Door, Hands on a Hardbody, Merrily We Roll Along (directed by John Doyle), Tribes, and The Legend of Georgia McBride. Thank you to Lynn and this incredibly talented production staff for imagining such beautiful productions and creating the magic that is theatre. He sends love to his wonderful family and his fiancé, AJ, for their continued love and support. He is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association.

LEXI MULLER (Stage Manager) is thrilled to join Ensemble Theatre for the season!

Her previous productions include Sex with Strangers, The House, Legendale, On Golden Pond, 26 Pebbles, Hail Mary!, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and One Slight Hitch with the Human Race Theatre Company. Her other regional credits include Dayton Philharmonic’s Best of Broadway II concert at the Schuster Center. Ms. Muller is a proud member of Actors' Equity Association and a graduate of Wright State University, where she received her BFA in Stage Management.

BRIAN c. MEHRING (Resident Set & Lighting Designer) has designed more than 100 productions at Ensemble Theatre. His favorite productions include Thom Pain (based on nothing), Next to Normal, 33 Variations, Freud's Last Session, and I Am My Own Wife. Mr. Mehring’s regional favorites for set design include The Last 5 Years and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Henry IV, Part 1, The Georgia Shakespeare Festival; and I Am My Own Wife, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Peterborough Players, and Florida Studio Theatre.

SHANNON RAE LUTZ (Properties Master & Design Assistant) earned her Master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music in 1996 and became Prop Master at Ensemble Theatre. Trained as a performer, she first appeared on ETC’s stage during the 1988-1989 New Works Festival. In 1991, she was granted an ETC internship. Now the Director of Apprentice Programming, she is honored to guide ETC’s essential ensemble: The Professional Acting Apprentice Company. Ms. Lutz would like to thank D. Lynn Meyers, Ruth Sawyer, and the Cincinnati theatre community and patrons for their generous, supportive, and tenacious spirit.

PRODUCTION TEAM, continued JACK MURPHY (Technical Director) is excited to be in his sixth season at Ensemble Theatre. He grew up in the Cincinnati area and studied technical theatre at Hanover College. While there, he spent his summers at several different summer stock theatres such as Georgia Shakespeare Company and the Brevard Music Center’s Janiec Opera Company as a carpenter. After graduation, he moved to Bellport, NY, to work for The Gateway Playhouse as a carpenter and rigger, and he went on to work for Norwegian Cruise Line. After another summer at the Janiec Opera Company, he came full circle and returned home to Cincinnati. Mr. Murphy is eager to continue to do the cutting edge work ETC is known for and has enjoyed working on such productions as An Iliad, Grounded, and The Humans.

STORMIE MAC (Costume Designer) is delighted to return to Ensemble Theatre as their Costume Supervisor, as well as the Costume Designer for this production. She is a Cincinnati-based costume designer and technician with a passion for the history of fashion and costume. She received her MFA in Costume Design from Florida State University and a BFA from The University o f Mississippi. Her recent costume design credits include St. Nicholas, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Red Velvet, and Bloomsday, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati; Sex with Strangers, The Human Race Theatre; and The Diary of Anne Frank, Death of a Salesman, and Emma, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.

Ms. Mac would like to thank her husband, Joey, for his endless support.

MATT CALLAHAN (Sound Designer) was the Resident Sound Designer for Actors Theatre of Louisville for seven seasons. His most recent designs for Ensemble Theatre include Ripcord, Fly By Night, St. Nicholas, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Mr. Callahan was also a co-creator/designer of Rock n’ Roll: The Reunion Tour. He spent two seasons as the Resident Sound Designer at The Eugene O’Neil Center for their National Playwrights Conference. He was formerly the sound engineer for Steppenwolf Theatre, the Assistant Engineer for Blue Man Chicago, and a member of the disbanded Defiant Theatre. He received a Jeff Citation for Red Dragon, a nomination for Fortinbras, and a Kevin Kline nomination for Sherlock Holmes.

RACHEL KUHN (Scenic Charge Artist & Production Assistant) is thrilled to be in her third season at Ensemble Theatre. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Multidisciplinary Degree focusing on Fine Arts, Creative Writing, and Neuropsychology, but technical theatre has been a hobby since high school.

She is a former scenic artist for 3DX, and has worked in stage management, sound engineering, and special effects makeup for organizations including New Edgecliff Theatre, Falcon Theatre, and Cincinnati Landmark Productions. Ms. Kuhn began to paint backdrops for ETC's Education Department, which led to her current position at the theatre, where some of her favorite credits include Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Bloomsday, and When We Were Young and Unafraid.

Weekend hours vary. VISA, MC, Discover, and AmEx are accepted, as well as Downtown Gift Cards.

TICKET RESERVATIONS & SALE POLICY Reservations can be made by calling the box office, in person, or online. Ticket reservations are not accepted via email. Single-ticket purchases are final sale with no refund. Single tickets may, however, be exchanged for another performance during the run of a show for a fee, but may not be exchanged from one production to another. If a patron is a no-show for their reserved performance, ETC is under no obligation to reschedule his or her tickets.

TAX CREDITS If for any reason you cannot attend your performance and cannot reschedule for another date, tickets released prior to performances by calling the ETC box office are fully deductible as a charitable contribution.

No-shows or tickets released after curtain time do not qualify as tax credits.

PARKING Patrons may park at the Gateway Garage (accessible via 12th Street) or at the surface lot, both are conveniently located at the corner of Vine and 12th Streets. Parking is also available at Washington Park Garage and Mercer Commons Garage.

CHILDREN Children under the age of 4 will not be admitted to productions unless otherwise advertised. Parents with disruptive children will be asked to leave the theatre.

LATECOMERS & ADMITTANCE Latecomers will be seated at the House Manager’s discretion and may be denied admission depending upon the demands or structure of a particular production. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, readmittance is not guaranteed. ETC reserves the right to deny admission and/or remove any disruptive patrons from the theatre at any time.

RESTROOMS Public restrooms are located in the first and third floor lobbies. Should you need to use the restroom during a performance, readmittance will be at the House Manager's discretion.

ACCESSIBILITY Please notify the box office in advance if you require wheelchair-accessible seating or have special seating needs and our staff will be happy to accommodate you. Audio-enhancement and large print programs available. Generally, sign-interpreted performances are on the third Wednesday of every production.
