The project addresses the dilemma of the contemporary urban condition where on the one hand, urban density and the activity of daily life is necessarily intensifying, while on the other, the need to have a counterpoint, a release or an escape, is increasingly important in finding balance. Gunyama Park and Aquatic Centre lies within the burgeoning high density centre of Green Square as a counterpoint to the intensity of urban life. Scale and landscape are pivotal in this objective. To have a vastness for the eye to gaze and a restful space in which to take a breather from the urban surround are vital in satisfying this need. To have a nice place to start the day, a place with a seat in the sun, fresh air, and a park configured for promenading, playing, jogging, pramming and biking is equally important. Gunyama Park is all of this. The park is structured as a rectangular field across the entire available area to give it vastness. It is edged by a shaded promenade within a formal grove of trees to make an endlessly functional perimeter for walking, running, lingering and observing. The edge is anonymous yet familiar - a place for neighbourly exchanges and the strengthening of community ties. To walk here is to be immersed in the park giving everyday community users and passers-by the park experience while contributing activity and movement beyond just the destinational user.
to the west. The landscape is both resilient and functional with the wetlands filtering rejected water from the aquatic centre for greywater usages.

The sports facilities float within this fluid native landscape in contrast with the formal edges to the park. These are supported with activity spaces, barbecue areas and a playground to provide for leisure pursuits within a naturalistic setting. It’s not just a sports precinct, but an ecology of landscapes enriched by the seasons as change ebbs through the park.

A defined depression of synthetic turf cuts a crisp spectator edge against this landscape while a skateboard park is interwoven within the undulations of the dunes to the east. The lowering of the aquatic centre within the park avoids complicating the appreciation of the landscape. There’s no fence or building, but rather a continuity of landscape and space. While the architecture and its visual presence might be recessive, the delight of swimming is amplified and celebrated. Much like The Rink at the Rockefeller Center, the pool becomes a stage set, a spectacle within the park where the splash and joy of water activities lure passers-by to the edge.
The southern edge is fundamental in this scenario. Bathed in direct sunlight during winter and with the benefit of a car free zone edged by restaurants, shops and cafes, it will become a community hotspot, a place for markets, and a key secondary movement spine between destinations further afield. Providing both prospect & refuge, the edge sits between the everyday, and the perpetual pull of the park to come play and escape. The park is an aberrant hybrid of artificial and natural habitats. The main body of the park is like a rectangular transect through a native landscape terrain that is at one end a flat plane, but at the other, rolling dunes. This reinstated landscape is designed to exhibit the variety of native species that would have predominated pre-settlement with dunal characteristics of Eastern Surburb’s Banksia Shrub to the east transitioning to an integrated green roof wetland system

Perhaps the most avid runner among local fitness junkies, Bertie is up before dawn and his run works like clockwork. As if perfectly tuned to the workings of the cosmos he always finds himself running toward the sun just as it is rising above the trees.
Jacob is no Kasparov, no chess grandmaster, but that doesn't mean he hasn’t got a few tricks up his sleeve. George knows this and takes his moves slowly and carefully. Their focus on the game is so great that neither one notices the stolen black knight.
Boris' morning exercises have become something of a local spectacle as he lift's weights the size of children. He has the physique of a circus strongman and lifts a 30 kilo dumbbell with the grace of a practiced gymnast. He works in IT.
Susan is a café regular; the barista has her order in before she walks inside the café where she enjoys a cup with a book or a friend. She doesn't have a particular routine or anything but has been avoiding afternoons ever since a stray soccer ball upset her latté.
William and Josh are brothers. William and Josh are star players in the local rugby team. But only one will make it into nationals and the rivalry hasn't been fiercer.
Arthur hasn't been having much luck with the soccer ball lately. His last attempt at goal landed square in a latté.
Baby Lilly loves the outdoors rain, hail or shine, she longs for the air and dappled light of the park promenade. This has led Kate, a graphic designer, to shift the lion's share of her daily routine outdoors. Though she doesn't share Lilly's sentiments about rain and hail, she feels inspired working under the trees.
After age took a swing at Hank's health he found himself condemned to a more sedentary lifestyle. But his enthusiasm for birds (he keeps four as pets) has led him to throw caution to the wind and he can be seen at least twice a week, in full bird watcher's attire, tracking Red Brown Finches and Cockatoos as they soar in the sky.
Nina's bike belonged to her father. The sky blue 1980's Bianchi C Racing bike turns the odd head from time to time as she rides it to university. The chain's been slipping off a bit lately.
June is re-reading Pride and Prejudice. There is something in the way the tall grasses move in the south-west wind that makes her long to go back into Austen's Hertfordshire and she is lost to the world until the last shadows of the sunset creep across the page.
Phillipe and Martine are enjoying their retirement. The two ex-surgeons bring their poise and precision to their favourite pastime: badminton. Martine was a university league champion and has been on a two-week winning streak.
Rico and Gunter have been Bocce rivals for a long time now. Gunter bowls well but Rico has developed a knack for hitting them aside. Gunter doesn't find this very sporting.
Millie and Mitch are troublemakers. Hide and seek is about the only respectable endeavour they undertake each week. Lately they have been stealing chess pieces. Mitch wants to complete the set; Millie thinks their days of impunity are numbered.
Beatrice has had Hugo since he was a pup. The two get along quite well most of the time - the main exception being when Hugo goes to make his territorial claim at the entrance to the Aquatic Centre.

The 50m pool is completely open to the sky & oriented with its long axis east west to maximise capture of sun & protection from the cold winter winds. The familiar joy of Sydney’s north-facing coastal headlands is captured in the rock-ledge like bleacher seating along the southern edge of the pool. This wind protected sunny spot against a warm edge will be treasured by locals for sun bathing & overseeing the action of the 50m pool. Satisfying the bodily pleasures of water, sun & shade are fundamental in this arrangement. The leisure pool & program pool are more contained & environmentally controlled. While hardy lap swimmers will revel in the briskness of the open air in winter, leisure swimmers & users of the pro-
To keep artificial heating to a minimum, an innovative strategy allows for multiple ‘use’ of the waste pool water - providing underfloor hydronic heating, heat exchange to the mechanical system to maintain warmth and comfort levels and ultimately fed to the green roof to support the wetland.

The combination of being protected from the wind, the moderating effect of the ground temperature and thermal mass, and the use of greenhouse technology, enables the facility to be mostly open air with a relatively low energy demand. The benefit is that the activity of swimming can be enjoyed as a largely outdoor pursuit for the most part of the year with a high-level of comfort.
ne
Concrete walls are formed with texture to scatter sound while ceilings are used to absorb sound to remove echo and sharpness of sounds. This achieves stillness when swimmers are few or a muted liveliness when the facility is busy. The ambition is to elicit a primal response in the experience of this underworld as part of the strategy to make a juxtaposition and counterbalance with the everyday.

The light correspondingly is subdued in the morning with low-angle reflected light as the sun rises. Direct sun starts to light-up the walls early in the day as it floods in through chasms in the ground above. For the majority of the day, the openings are composed to bring direct sun into the facility, while conversely, from within the pools, the sky is carefully framed by the architecture to reduce the spatial experience to just interior volume and sky.
During the cooler months, the pool staff - like greenhouse operators - have at their disposal options to firstly close the glazed roof in varying degrees to generate greenhouse warming and minimise vertical heat loss. Secondly sliding windows can be utilised to close-off the space from cooler outside air. Finally when necessary, artificial heating can be introduced through hydronic heating to maintain comfort levels for the coldest of days.

Like an aquatic ‘other-world’ landscape, a series of quiescent pools within a cavernous setting slowly come to life with early morning swimmers gliding end to end before giving way to the merriment of leisure swimmers throughout the latter parts of the day.
The key to enabling this balance is the adoption of Greenhouse technology - a technology that is highly evolved, reliable and cost effective. Designed to deal with condensation and airborne chemicals while maintaining year round temperature and humidity, the attributes of greenhouses parallel the technical requirements of the aquatic centre.
The containment of public space is achieved with the simplest means possible. Conceived as a found landscape re-inhabited for use, universal off-form concrete is used through-out for structure and surface to avoid both distraction from the spatial experience, and association with the ordinary or everyday. The concrete is detailed with weathering in mind to settle the structure into the landscape and give it a timelessness. Pool elements are detailed as retrofit with directness and economy to support the sense that this is an aberrant underworld landscape that was not originally designed with aquatic centre in mind.
Deeper within the facility are the hydrotherapy pool, gymnasium and fitness studios. Consistent with the approach to the pool areas, these spaces equally draw on the power of the enclosing walls and the controlled use of daylight from above to establish their essential character. Composed around a series of small courtyards open to the sky, each of these rooms has a framed meditative outlook to focus the mind and enhance the fitness experience.
ol
Upon descending into the aquatic centre, the focus becomes very much the pools and their containment within the massive enclosing walls. Floating beams and columns of an unexpectedly monumental scale contribute to the drama of the space. It is an architecture of the senses. One that plays upon solid & void, compression & release, light & dark.
grammed activity pool require more moderated conditions for an enjoyable experience. The envelope design for these pools balances openness to Sydney’s moderate climate with containment for environmental control.

Arrival at the pool is via a generous public ramp from Joynton Avenue which brings people down to a mezzanine reception area. Below ground parking is provided at the same level to bring people to the same arrival point. From here, pool users access the facility via secure stairs and a lift at the southern end of reception while gymnasium users have access at the northern end of reception. Change rooms and amenities are located directly below reception to streamline the entry sequence.
Edge Seating
The linear spine of the main gymnasium space with studio rooms to one side provides an efficient arrangement for supervision as does the relatively open arrangement of the main pools. Administrative & back of house areas are discreetly housed on the mezzanine level to avoid any reading in the architecture.
