Solving the Problem of Pollution Migrating from the micro to the macro, from the little to the big, away from the immediate surroundings, and rise up to have a look from above - the wide panorama of the cities unfolds before our eyes. This wide picture concerns us as much as beautiful homes, interiors, gardens and offices, in short, our micro picture presented in these subsequent pages.

In comparison the wide panorama or the macro does not seem to be performing as well as the micro. Delhi, as an example, has drawn world attention, causing architects to think and reflect upon its condition. The capital and important cities have become the subject of international debates and discussions. Some architects in France have proposed a unique building for Delhi to provide relief to the environment which is under sever attack. India's capital is threatened where pollution has set in deep. The number of motorized vehicles other than buses plying on the streets of Delhi being 26,98,488 in the year 1997 have shot up to 63,75,033 in the year 2010 while the figure for the buses have risen from 13,576 in the year 1997 to 29,849 in the year 2010. Statistically there are over 1000 new vehicles finding their way on the Delhi roads every day. Combined with the industries the vehicles throw 3,000 tonnes of pollutants into the air daily. The much needed thermal power plants also add their part which is almost 13 per cent of the pollution in air. The rising number of cars and two wheelers are clearly to
blame but they are not alone. One does not have to go to experts or their reports to know how bad the situation is because it is so apparent that even visibility is blocked on the road. What is clearly visible is smog; a choking haze gathers by the evening. Delhi's RSPM levels have shot up four times the prescribed limit and have nearly touched the 250 microgram barrier. What is alarming about Delhi is that it has become like the extremely polluted industrial townships of Jharia, Raipur and Kanpur which have the highest average RSPM levels, as observed by Sumit Sharma of TERI. It is to be noted that Jharia, the coal town, has extremely poisonous air. The situation of water is not very encouraging either. There are 28 industrial areas in Delhi where most of the small scale industries cannot afford to treat their liquid waste. Pollution in Delhi is getting from bad to worse. The time has come to look for solutions. An architectural solution which the French architects have conceived for India is, in their terminology, LO2P. Its appearance is really different from contemporary buildings. Looking at it one feels one has migrated to another world. The onlooker does not believe he is in one of the cities on earth but is a tourist on some other planet. This is the way it is going to be as the 21st first century advances. An enormous change is in the making and the French architects Julien Combes and Gael Brule are the pioneers of the coming transformation in architecture. What really makes them the leaders January 2013
EDITORIAL of the future is the extraordinary design of their creation called LO2P. Their proposal is revolutionary. No doubt it is referred to as a sky scraper yet it is completely different from the towers we see in cities all over the globe whether they are in New York and New Delhi or in Addis Ababa and Anchorage. Julien Combes and Gael Brule of Atelier CMJN in France have not just made a newlooking building but have made a sweeping change to the way we look at our construction. A word about CMJN: this is French for cyan-magenta-jaunenoir meaning cyan-magenta-yellow-black which is a colour model for commercial printing that produces a wide range of colours by mixing varying percentages of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks. In this context CMJN is working through CMYK which is literally a workshop. CMYK is created to let the imagination take wings and produce something extremely out of the ordinary, something unique. Something that will result is hopefully a poem in architecture having technical relevance and sustainability. CMYK is born from the marriage of architects and engineers. It is a team formed of multidisciplinary working groups to be able to meet different challenges. The team claims to produce almost anything just as basic colours make all kinds of different colours. It is a play of different actors from varying backgrounds that combines all elements to compose and present something interesting, generally novel, and which January 2013
generates new thinking and an innovative demonstration. With this collaboration what the architects have made for the capital is a giant loop composed of material from recycled cars. And they have put layers of greenhouses to act as filters, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. In addition there are rotating filters to collect particles from the air. The material of old, discarded cars used for construction is one way of saving the environment. Besides, the LO2P has an inbuilt power house being fed by photovoltaic panels and a large wind turbine fixed with an arrangement to the recycling loop. The base in the recycling centre produces food and biofuel out of waste heat and carbon dioxide. . The special quality of LO2P is that it is nature friendly. Also it produces its own energy which is renewable. It has all the elements and features that any modern building must have to make it sustainable. No wonder it has won the competition eVolo organises. It is number One of all the entries. Thus LO2P has incorporated what will be taken by the artists and architects who design buildings for the future of the urban world. 9

NEWS Fire fodder: Wires, plywood
A
t least two dozen people at a central Delhi high-rise early on Monday found themselves in the way of a rapidly rising wall of fire. Firefighters were locked in a sevenhour battle to wrest control of the blaze that was triggered apparently by short-circuit on the third floor and fuelled by flammable stuff strewn carelessly about on several floors above it. “The fire began on the third floor before spreading to the fourth, fifth and the sixth floors -- gutting whatever came in its way,” said Ramesh Kumar, a security guard, who was among the first persons in the building to have noticed the fire. “Initially, we thought it was a minor short-circuit and tried to use water to try and quell the resultant fire. It took us a couple of minutes to realise that the situation was already out of hand,” Ramesh added.
Other material, such as loose cables, plywood and adhesive boxes lying about on several floors, acted as catalysts -- so much so that water from three adjacent buildings had to be used to douse the blaze.
“After the fire-fighting effort was over, the extent of the damage became evident,” he said.
“As soon as the fire broke out, I assisted fire officials in breaking the windows to rescue those trapped inside. Later, we found a security guard, Jai Bhagwan Sharma, in the building. Sadly, by the time he was located, he was already dead,” said Mahesh, a house-keeping employee who was in the building.
According to sources, an explosion of an LPG cylinder and the compressor of an air conditioner installed along the path of the spreading inferno had acted as fodder.

Blum invests €26.8m in expansion of Dornbirn facilities
Forte has improved results in third quarter of 2012
An investment volume of €26.8m has been estimated for the expansion of plant 7 of Julius Blum at the location of Dornbirn-Wallenmahd. This ensues from a report in Blum Blättle, a publication for company employees. Preparation work commenced in September 2012, and construction work is planned to start at the beginning of December. A three-storey production building with an underground car park and an additional high-bay warehouse is to be built. The order picking and dispatch area is also to be expanded. Building work is expected to be completed within a period of 24 months. In the case of full utilisation of capacity 430 persons can be employed in plant 7, which serves as a dispatch centre and for the assembly of Aventos flap fitting systems, after expansion measures have been completed. Currently the location, which was commissioned in 2009, has 230 employees.
Following a very positive turnover development with an increase of 15% in the first half of 2012, turnover development slackened off again in the third quarter for Polish cabinet furniture manufacturer Fabryki Mebli Forte. Nevertheless a very considerable turnover improvement of 22% had been achieved in the third quarter of the previous year so the comparative value was extremely high. In the period between July and September 2012 the furniture manufacturer‘s turnover dropped by 4.2% to PLN137.3m whilst the key results figures developed along better lines. The operating result at PLN11.6m remained fairly stable at the previous year’s level. Accumulated over the first nine months of this year Forte increased its turnover by 7.7% to PLN400.7m and by 3.7% to €95.5m compared to last year.

High-Floor Heaven
L
ike an other worldly security detail, 15-foottall winged caryatids guard each of the four external corners of a penthouse apartment in lower Manhattan. Their stern expressions recall the Statue of Liberty, whose vigil in New York Harbor began in 1886, nine years before the terra-cotta figures were installed atop what was one of the city’s tallest buildings. Designed by architect R.H. Robertson, the 21-story tower, a stone’s throw from City Hall Park, was among New York’s first steelframed structures. Given that the proto-skyscraper was built by the American Tract Society, a publisher of religious pamphlets, the imposing caryatids necessarily appear angelic. “It’s an idiosyncratic, ornamental house form: a chateau atop a skyscraper,” says architect David Hotson of the unusual residence perched above the park. “The scale of decoration is just enormous,” he notes, pointing out the mammoth egg-and-dart detail of a copper cornice running just above the arcade—flourishes intended to register at street level. Viewed from the apartment’s 1,500squarefoot terrace, however, the oversize architectural ornament takes on a surreal, funhouse quality that proves an appropriate prelude to the apartment’s dazzling if occasionally disorienting interior. The building was converted into condominiums in 2002, but the top-floor residence was among the last to sell, in part because it truly was an architectural bauble, lacking plumbing as well as heating and cooling systems. What it did have was the possibility of a 45-foot ceiling and 360-degree city views out massive half-moon windows created by the building’s Romanesque arches. In 2007, the space caught the eye of an intrepid couple. Having previously worked with Ghislaine Viñas on two residential projects, the potential buyers sought her opinion. “It takes a special kind of client to tackle this sort of project,” says the interior designer who, knowing they were up for the adventure, advised them to make the leap. Use your bedroom. Pawel explains: 'Space in the bedroom is limited, the window is so placed that it allows leisurely relaxation. 2. Find solutions that suit you. 'We need to dry
our washing but we don't have space for a drying rack,' says Pawel. 'Instead, we added a wall-mounted clothes airer that folds down and out of the way when not in use. It's great because it's between two windows so the clothes dry in 12 hours.' 3. Create zones in an open space. Pawel and Julia like open spaces but want everything to have its own area so they used a mix of flooring to mark out different zones.

Intriguing Display of Colors and Textures
T
he result of the design collaboration between Trije Arhitekti and Kaval Group, Lolita Coffeehouse in Ljubljana, Slovenia showcases an impressive amount of details, some of which you will surely find interesting. The space (discovered on Interiorzine) is flooded in natural light from two huge historic windows, which also ensure communication with the pedestrian zone by the neighboring river. This way, passers-by can take a peek inside and feel drawn in by the unique atmosphere. The total area of the coffeehouse is 160 square meters. more than enough for the designers to create a welcoming space for coffee brakes. Original shelving systems were used to “decorate the walls and showcase various treats. The roughly painted brick wall creates an excellent visual contrast with the rest of the white walls and complements the wallpaper on the ceiling ( with a traditional vibe, just a bit inappropriate to the space for our tastes). Overall, we find these coffeehouse fresh and appealing, just like any good coffee.

Rock Overhangs Integrated in Local Architecture: The Town Under Rocks in Spain
W
e love to see examples of natural elements being integrated in architecture. Setenil de las Bodegas is a town in the province of Cรกdiz, Spain, famous for its rock overhangs. Its unusual location along a narrow river gorge was turned by the inhabitants into an architectural advantage, with some of the houses being built into the rock walls of the gorge itself. The result is a lovely small town, with a surprising design every step of the way. Each street in Setenil is different and sometimes visitors can feel overwhelmed by the large stones hanging above their heads. This is definitely not a place for claustrophobics! Walking through the town will reveal its traditional building facades, contrasted by the roughness of the old gorge cliffs and the various vegetation growing on these unusual rocky formations. How would you comment on the architecture of this fascinating small town in Spain?

NEW HOME
10 Things Buyers Should Know When Purchasing a New Home Times are indeed tougher these days and we are all ardently watching our money. The housing market is down, inventory is up. There are many homes for sale that are being offered at very competitive prices. If you’re in the market for a new home, now just may be the perfect time to make your purchase!

NEW HOME 1. Understand the responsibilities of home ownership This primarily applies to first time homeowners. Purchasing a new home is not always cut and dry. There are many factors that come into play and much to be considered. Research is important and plays a major role into the purchase of a new home. 2. Speak with a mortgage person to get pre-approved for a loan The pre-approval process is a more thorough qualification than the prequalification. A pre-qualification simply tells a Realtor that you are serious about purchasing a new home. It’s not a very detailed process. A pre-approval tells all parties involved that you are financially ready to purchase a new home. 3. Location, location, location Know where you want to be. Think about your lifestyle – how it is now and how it might be in 5 – 10 years. Will you need to commute to a nearby large city? Do you or will you have school aged children? Do you want to live in a neighborhood or in town? Would you prefer to have a smaller home in a more expensive town or a larger home a bit further away? 4. A Room with a View Once you’ve narrowed down where you want to live, you then need to figure out what it is that you have to have in your home. Do you want a newer home with all the amenities or an older historical one that you can work on and renovate over the years? Do you want a large area for children and pets, or would you prefer something requiring less maintenance so you won’t have to go out and spend your summer weekends mowing? 5. Take a drive Once you’ve searched the internet and found some homes that meet your criteria it’s time to get off the internet and see them in person. Photos can often be deceiving.

NEW HOME
6. Don’t judge a house by its cover Try to look past the pink shutters! Most agents will recommend their sellers to do some staging to a home before putting it on the market, but this does not always happen. 7. Have a back up plan It’s important to have a back up home. There are a number of things that can happen. You may have found the home of your dreams, but the seller may not agree to your price and terms, or issues may come up during a home inspection that are unable to be resolved. 8. Get as much information on your desired home as you can If a CMA (Comparative Market Analysis) has not been done on the home of your choice ask your agent to do one for you. There are many websites that will give you an estimate on the value of a home, but the comparable information is not always up to date and may not always be accurate. 9. Get to Know the Property It might be worthwhile to visit town hall with your Realtor to find out more about the property. Take some time to talk with the building and zoning departments to see what work has been done to the house, and that permits were pulled and a certificate of occupancy was granted. 10. Keep your cool during the building inspection Be prepared. Inspectors need to find everything wrong with the house – that is their job. Many of these issues are small, insignificant things.

SAFETY
20 Tips for Home Safety and Security
In addition to safeguarding your home with a home security system, following these simple home safety tips that help protect against threats like burglary, intrusion and fire can give you and your family an added sense of protection.
General Home Safety and Security 1. Create the illusion that someone is at your house if you're away for an extended period of time. Leave a TV or stereo on in a room where a burglar would most likely break in. Use exterior lighting and motion detectors to minimize burglar concealment. 2. Make sure all exterior doors have good proper locks. Install 1-inch deadbolt locks on all exterior doors. 3. If you get an unexpected knock at the door, check to see who it is before opening it. 4. Don't leave extra keys under doormats, potted plants or any other obvious outdoor location. 5. Burglar-proof your glass patio doors by setting a pipe or metal bar in the middle bottom track of the door slide. The pipe should be the same length as the track. 6. Keep garage doors closed at all times. Even when you're home, it's important to safeguard your belongings and your family 7. Keep drapes and blinds shut - especially in rooms where there is expensive equipment. 8. Store cash, jewelry and other valuables in a safe or safety deposit box instead of leaving them lying around the home. Helping protect your investments and furnishing your home with a security system can help lower your risk of a home invasion or burglary. 9. Don't leave notes on the door for service people or family members when you're not there. 10. Adjust your telephone ring to its lowest volume setting, if you're going to be away from home for a few days. Home Fire Safety 11. When buying, building or renovating your home, make sure all roofing materials are fire resistant. 12. Never leave candles or other open flames burning unattended. January 2013

SAFETY 13. Douse cigarette and cigar butts with water before dumping them in the trash. By following safety tips at home like this and having home security, you can help protect your investments and add value to your home. 14. Don't leave hot irons, or burning stovetops and outdoor grills unattended while in use. 15. Regularly clear and dispose of dry or dead vegetation in your yard or areas near your home. 16. Make sure the lid stays on your trash can, and store firewood and other combustibles away from your home. 17. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. For the best detection and notification protection, install both ionization and photoelectric-type smoke alarms. 18. Don't have deadbolts that lock with an inside key. You need to get out fast if a fire starts. A missing key could trap you inside. Also, don't nail windows shut. Make sure they open easily. 19. Make a fire escape plan for your family. Find two exits out of every room. 20. Be sure your street address is visibly posted so that firefighters can identify your home in the event of an emergency. Top 5 reasons to have a home security system There are multiple reasons to furnish your home with an ADT monitored home security system. Whether you have a growing family you want to help monitor or an elderly loved one living with you who needs extra assistance – there are countless reasons and numerous benefits that come with having home security. 1. Added protection against multiple dangers – In addition to burglary, a home security system can help protect you from threats such as fire, carbon monoxide, flooding and freezing when you have equipment like smoke, heat and water sensors 2. Fast alarm response and complete coverage – A reliable home security provider and dependable coverage during a home emergency are critically important to ensuring the safety of your loved ones and home. 3. 24-hour monitoring – A highly-trained staff of security professionals provide constant surveillance to your home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Even when you can’t be there, someone is always watching over your home 4. A home security system that’s easy to operate – A home security system is only effective if you know how to properly use it. 5. Affordable monthly monitoring

LIGHT
Master bedroom lighting ideas Bedroom light fixtures are a very important consideration when you design the room that you spend so much time sleeping in at night. It is a thing that a lot of people seem to overlook and just think more about the color such as deciding to get white bedroom furniture. One way of approaching the bedroom lighting is to make sure that you set it up in layers. This will make it very easy for you to change the atmosphere at the flick of a switch. For a start we suggest that you choose some bedside table lamps so that you can read easily when you go to bed. Make sure that the bulbs that you fit in them are strong enough though. Then you can balance that up with something like a floor lamp or perhaps a wall lamp diagonally opposite to the bed. Lighting plays an important role while decorating a surrounding, whether it is interiors or exteriors. Just like paying attention to paint colors and furniture in a room, one also needs to pay attention while adding natural or artificial sources of light to a surrounding. If you understand lighting design basics properly, then you can render an area with an ambiance which looks bright, clean and spacious for day time use, or hazy and little romantic for evening parties.

Discover the variety of outdoor lighting, posts and fixtures to showcase your garden or home exterior
Home light fixtures are something that you simply cannot do without. Anywhere you go or anywhere you enter whether it's your home or any public library, office, school, college, everywhere you will find light fixtures. Home light fixtures are essential for any household because lighting fixtures can change the look of your rooms. You can make your room look brighter by adding lighting fixtures in plenty or you can make it more warm and cozy with the help of softer lighting fixtures. So, the look and feel of any room in your house depends largely on the type of lighting fixtures you use. Interior home light fixtures are best known for their reliability, superior quality and performance. If you really want to make your home stand out from others then proper home light fixtures along with perfect furniture can do the trick. You need to arrange lighting fixtures in such a way that they not only illuminate accent pieces and furniture in your home but also enhance their beauty. It is considered as one of the most primary things in interior designing. If you are having problems in making the right choices when it comes to light fixtures, then you can seek assistance from professional interior decorators.

CCTV Headquarters Office for Metropolitan Architecture Beijing Too Big To Fail?: Long awaited and much debated, the enormous headquarters for CCTV finally opens, already a symbol of the new Beijing. But what does it actually say about architecture and China today? An engineering marvel, CCTV flaunts its technological prowess in its radical geometry and exposed steel bracing. And its most daring structural element is the “overhang,” a nine-to-13story bridge that makes a right turn in midair as it spans the gap between the two angled towers. Looming 37 stories above the ground, it juts out 245 feet from one tower and 220 feet from the other. During construction, the two arms of the overhang were cantilevered from the towers before being connected to form a more stable bridge and complete the building’s continuous structural tube. Making that connection was a dramatic moment during construction and required a precise fit. Because the sun warms and expands the steel in each part of the building at a different time during the day, construction workers had to complete the task early in the morning when the arms are the same temperature. Visitors today who take the public tour through CCTV get a visceral understanding of the engineering feat when they arrive at the overhang and walk over three clear glass discs set in the deck of the 37th floor. A veritable forest of exposed steel bracing here also helps bring the construction story alive for anyone visiting the space January 2013
Promising to “kill the skyscraper,” Rem Koolhaas and his colleagues at Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) grabbed international attention in 2002 when they won the competition to design a huge headquarters in Beijing for China Central Television (CCTV), the state-run news and entertainment network. Polemical and hyperbolic as usual, Koolhaas said the skyscraper had become “corrupted” by its proliferation around the world and “negated by repetitive banality.” So instead of joining the race to build ever taller, his scheme bent the high-rise into a

loop of interconnected activities. Four years after it was originally scheduled to open—in time for the network to broadcast the Beijing Olympics from its new home—CCTV is finally moving employees into the controversial building, a 5.1 million-square-foot structure that even before it was completed had imprinted its swaggering form on the fabric of the city and the mental map of its citizens. The building shares a 45-acre site with a low-rise, ring-shaped service structure and a 31-story tower called the Television Cultural Center (TVCC), both of which OMA also designed. The service building provides power to the entire complex and houses security personnel, while TVCC will have a Mandarin Oriental hotel, a public theater, restaurants, and shops. TVCC famously burned in February 2009 when fireworks celebrating the lunar New Year engulfed the building's skin in flames just months before the hotel was set to open. It is being repaired and should be complete in 2013. The site anchors a new central business district emerging from an industrial area built during the Mao era. Plans call for about 300 high-rises there, which is one reason why OMA took a different approach with CCTV. According to Koolhaas, three of the four other firms competing for the job (KPF, SOM, and Dominique Perrault) proposed skyscrapers, while only Toyo Ito offered something different (a disc-shaped structure with a small tower). “The form of our building was attractive to the client,” says Koolhaas. “It set us apart.”

Tower at PNC Plaza Gensler Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Let the Fresh Air In: A tower offers an alternative to the hermetically sealed glass box At 33 stories and about 550 feet, PNC Financial Services Group's new headquarters in Pittsburgh will not break any records for its height. But when the underconstruction, $400 million building designed by Gensler is completed in the summer of 2015, it will be among a handful of naturally ventilated office towers in the U.S. And it is expected to be the country's tallest tower relying on such a passive strategy for environmental control The goal for the Tower at PNC Plaza was to design “a building that would breathe,” says Hao Ko, design director for Gensler. The high-rise's steel structure is wrapped in a glazed double curtain wall that includes automated windows on the exterior and flaps on the interior to bring in fresh air. Designers estimate that the tower will operate in this natural-ventilation mode, without the need for fan power, for more than 40 percent of working hours. The scheme's key feature is a solar chimney comprising two shafts at the core of the building's trapezoidal floor plate. It will create a “controlled” stack effect to draw hot air out of the building, according to Denzil Gallagher, principal at Buro Happold, the skyscraper's structural and mechanical engineer. At the top is a 5,000-squarefoot chamber with a glass roof and a concrete slab, sloped and angled toward the south in order to trap solar radiation. During much of the spring and fall, when temperatures are mild and humidity is low, this configuration will create a pressure differential that should pull outdoor air through the operable facade and the 30-inch cavity it defines; the air will be drawn across the floor plates, and then vented through the solar chimney. In the winter, the chamber will help preheat fresh outdoor air before its distribution throughout the tower. To make sure the air would keep moving through the building, but flow slowly and gently, the project-team members built an approximately 5-by-5-foot mockup of

RECORD the glass-topped chamber on the roof of another PNC-owned building near the site. With the mockup, they recorded factors like air and surface temperatures inside the chamber in order to calibrate their computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies and energy models. The ultimate goal of this process was optimization of the solar chimney's size and shape. Consultants predict that the natural ventilation, along with features like active chilled beams, efficient lighting, and automated shades, will produce a skyscraper that exceeds LEED Platinum requirements. And they estimate that the tower will consume only about half the energy of a building that complies with the 2007 version of the ASHRAE 90.1 standard. But conserving energy is not the only objective. PNC, which has about 160 LEED-certified facilities nationwide, hopes the tower will provide a comfortable working environment. For example, its employees will be able to enjoy views over the city from the multistory atriums, or “sky gardens, that make up the tower's west facade and provide space for informal meetings. They will also be able to open sliding windows on the building's interior skin to let the air circulating within the curtain-wall cavity into the office spaces. Even though the tower will rely on passive ventilation for much of the time, points out Ko, the occupants' relationship with the structure will be an active one. 40

The interior of the Gobind Mahal contains doublestoreyed ranges on all the four sides. The five storey central tower rising above these in peripheral ranges can be regarded as a secular version of a temple shikhara. The Gobind Mahal also continues some example of the Bundela art on the ceilings of the tower and rectangular chamber on the storey opening towards the lake below. The chamber has niches, cornices and the vaulted ceiling covered with elegant designs with Mughal flavor. The domed ceilings on the three storeyes of the tower are painted with some geometrical designs, arabesques, dancing figures, pairs of peacocks and a shallow petalled dome at the upper most level. Most of the painted ceilings are still in very good state of preservation showing little effect of intense heat and neglect. It is really astonishing that such a beautiful building was never occupied for residence by any ruler. It ultimately became a monument which boasts highly of architectural grandeur of that period. Mysore Palace Mysore Palace said to be the greatest palace in southern India. Believed to have been first built in the 14th century CE, Mysore Palace was supposedly rebuilt in 1638 CE over the old structure which was badly damaged by lightening. The erstwhile Wadiyar ruler has a few pavilions built which brought the lost glory back to some extent. In 1753 CE Tipu Sultan had almost all palace structures demolished. He wanted to build a new city which he could not. The reversal of circumstances brought the Wadiyars to power again in 1799 CE. The constriction activity resumed and by 1803 very small set of buildings, mostly built in wood, stood there. All the structures including a wooden palace were consumed by fire. The wooden palace was built in traditional Hindu architecture. Later on Wadiyars decided to build a

large palace maintaining the Hindu style. The work was assigned to Henry Irwin who had built the Viceregal Lodge at Simla. The palace incorporated architectural features of buildings in Delhi, Agra and Calcutta. The work on this new Mysore Palace began in 1897 CE and it was completed in 1912 CE The new Mysore Palace is a massive grey granite structure in three storeys with a gilded dome at the top. The façade of the palace has seven arches on tall pillars behind which lies the grand Darbar hall. The Darbar hall faces a large open court. From a distance the Mysore Palace appears in “a gleaming profusion of domes, turret, archways and colonnadesâ€?. The most impressive pavilion in the Mysore Palace is the Kalyan Mandap. It is an octagonal hall with marble
flooring in different colours. It has a dome supported on iron pillars. The pillars and the stained glass ceiling were made in Glasgow. The Amba Vilasa or the Diwan-i-Khas is the showpiece of the Mysore Palace displaying teakwood ceililng, marble flooring and fabulous chandeliers. The ornamentation of Amba Vilasa was carried out by a great artist of Karnataka. The Darbar hall of Mysore Palace is the most spectacular hall of public audience in the whole range of India's architectural heritage. Only a few palace interiors in India can rival its grandeur Mysore Palace has five entrances marked by stately triple-arched gateways. The eastern gate is the most magnificent and its central arch is 60 feet high. January 2013
