STONE AS A MEANS OF EXPRESSION
M
yriad of creations in stone are artistic expression of men or the artisans and architects in particular. With the development of man's intellectual abilities stone became one of the first means of intellectual expression. Its use can be found in everyday communication, poetry and other literary forms and symbolism. The whole art of sculpture and architecture comprises of stone as a means of expression.

Since stone is an eternal material its use as a means of artistic expression outlives the time which expresses its creator himself and even a nation or a civilization in which it originated. A moment captured in stone tells about the art and artists, about the witness of time, people and civilization. Stone is a material with a solid entity. It occupies space, has certain volume and a concrete form, colour, hardness and massiveness. Though thousands of years have passed, it is still used widely by artisans for making images and sundry art objects.
All this is best exemplified in Taj Mahal, a monument which marks perfect moment in evolution of architecture. It is the perfect translation of Shah Jahan's emotionally charged imagination for building a memorial for his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. Taj Mahal is a symbol of eternal love, an expression of human emotions, religious belief and social customs and traditions. There are other examples to show how stone has been used as a means of human expression in the art of sculpture and architecture. The temples at Khajuraho on the one hand express strong religious sentiments of human beings while on the other their strongest desire and feeling for sex. Similarly statues of Shree Krishan and His consort Radha installed in different temples in Indian subcontinent are the ultimate expressing of the purest form of love. Artisans carve them out of rough block of stone and human faith makes them lively. It may be India or any country across the globe, stone is the oldest and still the most popular and choicest material which human beings are using as a means to express their ideas, feelings, imaginations and faith in different forms. Stone’s unique properties make it specific for artistic
use. It is a material with a solid entity. It occupies space, has certain volume and a concrete form, colour, hardness and massiveness. One of the special properties of stone is the relationship to time. A moment captured in stone tells about the art and artists, about the witness of time, people and civilisation. Stone shows the infinite beauty and truth of some finite moment and thus makes the moment possible and finite, bringing its beginning and outcome in the form of eternal beauty of the artistic creation and experience. Though thousands of years have passed since stone was first used as a means for artistic expression, as evident from stone figures excavated belonging to Harappa civilisation, it is still used widely by artisans for making images and sundry art objects. Swaminarayan temple at Delhi is one of the latest creations of architect and artisans where one can visualise use of stone to express man's religious feelings. Here they have fully used stone to express their imagination and show their artistic skill. Another fantastic example of the use of marble can be seen in contemporary stone sculpting by Christophe Gordon Brown of UK. His creations: Spiral Marble Ghost, The Trinity Model, Sea Disk etc. are expressions of idea and imagination in (obstrat) style. Shaping a stone as an artistic expression is almost the highest level of adaptness which artisans now do with ease and perfection with the aid of modern tools. Since stone is an eternal material its use as a means of artistic expression outlives the time which expresses its creator himself and even a nation or a civilization in which it originated. K. There are two types of quartz range in this kitchen lineup: Cagliari and The Classic Beige. Cagliari comes from the family of the Riviera range of Quartz. This has found an inspiration from the places like in the Mediterranean region and henceforth is named on them. Quartz has lot of advantages such as stain resistance, bacteria resistance, negligible water absorption and due to its strong surface hardness, this becomes an ideal material for the kitchen counter tops and table tops. Cagliari is available in different thicknesses. Classic Beige is from the Eleganza series of Kalingastone Quartz Collection. This family has around 18 products from whites to beiges, browns to blacks; all with elegance at their base. Classic Beige can be used for flooring, wall coverings, kitchen and table tops, commercial spaces and forms a perfect combination with darker shade products like Classic Brown & Fondente Brown.

Quartz is as hard as diamond, hence make perfect worktops. Not only are they hard, they also have an unusual depth, clarity and brilliant radiance. Worktops made of Quartz are not only long lasting but also are affordably priced. Quartz surfaces require a minimum amount of maintenance because they have stain resistant features. They do not deteriorate quickly because they are scratch resistant too. These worktops can withstand long weather conditions. Work tops made of Quartz look beautiful because of the various shades and colors they come in. Quartz has chemical compounds which prevents the attack of several bacteria. Because of this, many consider these worktops cleaner and more hygienic than all other contemporary worktops.
So when all such advantages are available with the usage of quartz in the kitchen then there should be no second thought as to go for any other stones for your kitchen. When you make your kitchen the best then use the stone at your best. The introduction of new technology, tools, computer and robot technology has revolutionised the art of stone sculpting. The use of dimensional stone, specially marble, in making artifacts and useful objects is the part of our material history.
With this use of stone seems to find new expressions in the field of contemporary design where marble stands out for its intrinsic value and potential to respond to new forms and figures. Marmomacc, the international exhibitions of stone design and technology, has recently added a new component to its
format, Marmomacc meets design to highlight entirely new designs innovated by sculptors like Patricia Urquiola, Tobia Scarpo and Michile De Lucchi. Marblelace Patricia Urquiola's Marblelace project is indeed a pioneering effort finding a new expression to marble. In this work the heaviness of marble vanishes, leaving behind it a light lace-like material in an innovative design. Marblelace is a monomaterial, interweaving walls in marble creating sinuous movement and an aerial pattern that divides space into solids and voids. Silhouettes and joints alternate chromatically between backgrounds of colours and geometric patterns, giving life to structural elements that as layers bloom on the surface.

The pieces are designed by Studio Keyart. Stonestep & Stopstone is an integrated lighting system for pavements and horizontal coverings in marble, granite, porphyry or other stones. It very well suits to giving paving patterns uniformity of material while
providing illumination to both public and private outdoor areas. This innovative lighting system gives architects and designers an all inclusive system meeting their needs for formal quality and technological efficiency in light fixture design, while the use of stone offers clients a homogenous solution that is most attractive from the material and chromatic standpoint. This new lighting fixtures have given a new dimension to stone sculpturing.
WONDER IN STONE
THE COLUMN Like the triumphal arch, the column is an ancient Roman invention, which leaders in different periods built to suit their purpose of highlighting victories in general and glorify themselves. Column of Trajan was erected in Rome in about AD 113 under the emperor Trajan's reigns. The impressive marble column measures 38 mt. high. A spiral band of relief sculpture from the base to the tip of the column narrates the military exploits of the emperor's troops with thousands of writhing figures, animals and battle scenes sculpted in marble.

Like Trajan's Column Nelson's Column was erected in the early part of the 19th century at Trafalgar Square in London. It measures 44 m in height. It was built to commemorate a great naval victory at Trafalgar in 1805. The column is topped by a statue of Nelson the naval commander, who lost an eye and arm in battle. There are several other stone columns built to commemorate a victory. Some of them worth mentioning are - Berlin Victory Tower, Germany; Alexander Column, Russia and Kutub Minar, Delhi and Vijay Stambh(Victory Tower), Chittorgarh both in India. Though it is no more a popular practice the columns built in the past are of great historical value.

STONE PROJECT
A HOME WITH A REAL OCEAN FRONT LOOK Laguna Beach, CA is a destination where it is not difficult to find an upscale home on the oceanfront, how is it a challenge to find a home with high end building materials. Hence, it was a challenge for designer Brittney Fischbeck of Abodwell Interior Design to create a spec home that would stand out in a very high-profile crowd. The solution was found in the natural stone quarried locally in California which helped the project achieve all its design and practical goals. Fischbeck specified a blend of Lompoc stone from California to create an upscale feeling while also reflecting the oceanfront location. The material combination features 60% Lompoc mountain ledge gray blend thin veneer and 40% Lompoc mountain ledge cream blend thin veneer. The home is by mark singer a very well known
architect and AIA orange country president. A mark singer home is a selling point in itself but the builder wanted a slightly different flair to it, but to be sold as a mark singer home. So Fischbeck wanted to create a light and airy beachy feel with colour palette that blends with the ocean and the sand and the mountains. For Fischbeck, it was a challenge to create a home that would stand out for its quality of design while also remaining contemporary and sophisticated. She imagined that the owner of the home would be a collector of art and sculpture, hence she wanted to home a neutral back ground so gray and cream were selected. The design includes a blend of Lompoc stone, out of which 60% is Lompoc mountain ledge gray blend thin veneer and 40% is Lompoc mountain ledge cream

The testing results for strength, durability and resistance to freeze/than cycles were excellent. In specifying areas of the home that would include stone veneer, Fischbeck sought to employ it in applications that would home the most visual effect. The Lompoc stone was used on the exterior entry and the beach facing faรงade, as well as a both the see-through fire places in the home. beach front location. The limestone has an antique finish and has undulations that are linear and are reminiscent of the look that sand has when water recedes. The floor was ordered in a custom texture which was quarried in Portugal. The project is now complete and has received positive feedback from the architecture and design sector and also has a sense of community. Fischbeck is upbeat about the project and says, "We have had AIA tours through the home and everyone loves that Lompoc stone. It shows really beautiful. I did not put any enhancer on it, I just wanted to leave it. As a LEED certified home, I wanted to avoid using chemicals. It was not just for getting LEED points, but also doing the right thing for the environment. It was also important to stay local as much as possible and to use local stone."

The 90 years old victory memorial drive in Minneapolis MN, US, which page homage to the veterans of world war Ist was recently re-dedicated after it went a major renovation. The memorial was first dedicated in 1921 and is recognised as the largest war memorial in the twin cities of Minnesota. Victory memorial drive is a beautifully landscaped, tree-
The memorials centerpiece war renovated last year with a range of local granite used with innovative applications. It holds a unique place in the history of this region and according to the Minneapolis park and recreation board, it was visited by General John Pershing and Marshal Ferdinand Fosct, the French commander of Allied forces during the war. The renovation was led by victory memorial drive task force and was a collaborative effort of Hennepin country the Minneapolis park and recreation board, the state of Minnesota and the city of Minneapolis. The total project cost $ 6 million, out of which $ 1.7 million was received in state bonding. The renovation began with building a new flag plaza pawed with granite. The area includes granite balustrade walls, a granite flag base and benches alongwith planting and lighting. New, large gateway monuments were installed at the entrances of victory memorial drive. From the very beginning, the landscape architect of the project was LHB of Minneapolis who knew that the project will be mainly carried out using local stone. According to Jason Aune, ASLA of LHB, it was known

from the very beginning that granite would be the main material because of its longetivity and also because the area's historic process dictates that a material native to Minnesota be used. The granite used had to be of colour different from the original because the integrity of the original work had to be preserved.
For the renovation of the memorial more than 4500 sq. ft. of lake superior green granite was used comprising of the flag pole base, benches, walls, gateway monuments and circle markers. sq. ft. of red-brown carnelian granite was used for paving the 90 feet diameter plaza. More than 150 sq. ft. of sierra-white granite was incorporated into the plaza surface to create a single accent strip within the carnelian granite floor. The gateway monuments feature service bannerol from world war Ist in radiant red granite as an accent to the lake superior green. While leaning, a gold star is seen which represents giving life to the country. Throughout the process, the landscape architect worked closely with the team at cold spring granite. The collaborative process was specially important for designing and processing the granite balustrades around the plaza. The public wanted a statue of a soldier in the memorial area but Aune convinced them a modern alternative to statue. Each balustrade appears to be an ornate spindle, but a closer look at the space in between each spindle, the negative relief image looks like the head of a soldier and are known as the "dough boy balustrades" in which Auto Cad imaging and automated machining have been used. In all, 66 balustrades were created, 44 for the plaza and 11 each for the entry gateways. The circular shape of the plaza also required some consideration since the plaza area has a 90 ft. radius with tremendous amount of detail. The granite was installed by CD Tile and stone of Minneapolis. It tooks months of carefully planned and executed work on the plaza before rededicating it after 90 years of original dedication. This second largest world war Ist memorial has been very well received by war veterans, country commissioners and the public. STONE PANORAMA April 2013

Reviving a Place of Faith by Renovation With Brownstone
www.stonepanorama.com
The restoration project was a long-term one which began in 1995 with an interior restoration of the building. At that time it was identified that moving forward with the repairing and restoration was needed. It took 10 years to move forward. Besides restoring the Brownstone faรงade, the project also involved restoring the stained glass windows and
building a steeple. For this job, Ivan Myjer of Building and Monument Conservation, Arlington, was hired. He helped in the online investigation and specifications. He did a survey of all stone and developed a plan for the restoration. He also did periodic site visits during the construction and the final site inspections. Myjer has many years of experience working on Brownstone structures. He made several week long visits to check the condition of the Brownstone. He did a survey to see what was going on with the stone. Everything projecting from the face of the building, like the trim pieces, was in rough shape while everything else was in good shape. The restoration project was a group effort to evaluate and approve submittals for use during restoration. The plan included cutting out and repairing of the mortar

joints, patching, retooling, back-up masonry repairs, cast stone replacements, brownstone replacements and cleaning. A major step in the restoration process was the stabilization of the spires for pedestrian safety and to prevent further loss. The reduction of water infiltration was another important goal and this was remediated by repointing, installing natural and pre-cast stone replacements and patching areas of stone failure.

The Brownstone suffered from a variety of failures, including delamination, cracking, exploitation and damage from prior repair failures. Additionally, the spires at the roof of the church were displaced broken and unstable.

Fortunately, the historic quarry that originally produced the Brownstone for the cathedral was still in operation during the time of the restoration. A big challenge throughout the project was the treatment, matching and replication of the original Connecticut Brownstone which has a distinctive star tooling pattern with a hand-applied boasted finish, found uniformly throughout the building stone. This needed to be replicated in the natural replacement stone. The stone was carefully carved with a chisel to create a pattern matching the original decorative stone. Additionally, getting the grain of the stone to match also posed a challenging task. Brownstone has a unique property. It changes colour over time, but slowly. The freshly quarried stone is darker. While natural Brownstone replacements were used in the lower courses, precast stone was used on the cathedral's

The restoration and steeple addition received the '2010 Best Building Project' Pinnacle Award from Carolina Associated General contractors, the 2011 Build America Award from the Associated General contractors of America, the 2011 Palladio Award from Traditional Building and various other awards from different institutions.

In addition to the Brownstone faรงade of the cathedral, the restoration project also involved erecting the 84 ft. tall copper steeple. While the building was originally constructed with a steeple, there were no funds to build one when it was rebuilt in 1907. The entire stone restoration and construction of the steeple took a little over two years to complete. The project has received rave reviews from the church community, the City of Charleston and historic preservation and design professionals. Approximately 2,500 eroded or weak stones were renowned and replaced with new Brownstone or precast stone. The precast stone took several rounds of submittals to achieve the match needed to blend with the original Brownstone. The spires also had to be repaired, replaced and rebuilt. The spires originally had no anchors, necessitating the removal and anchoring of all existing spires as well as installing the new units with a proper anchoring system.

Evidence from the innumerable archeological monuments, rock cut sculptures, caves and temples speaks volumes of Orissa's ancient tradition of stone craft and architecture. This forms a distinct unit having a continuous development and numerous well preserved examples as well as canons, text, and a specific terminology that distinguish the tradition from those of other regions of South Asia.

Orissa’s artisans use a variety of materials like ultra white soapstone, comparatively harder greenish chlorite, still harder pinkish handolite and black granite, a much harder material for carving. They use a simple process of drawing the figure on the stone and bring the final shape by removing the unwanted portions. For the hard stone it is done by chiseling while for the soft stone scrapping process is used.

All that glitters may not be gold but Turkish stone, specially marble and travertine, attracting world attention with its glitter is not less than gold, adding to the flourishing economy of Turkey. In the last ten years Turkey by renewing its technology, developing production quality and investing in quarries to present new stones to the market has acquired enviable position in the world stone industry. Under the shadow of recent recession the world over, Turkey kept its balance and kept pushing ahead. Today Turkish stone industry is doing very well competing with giants in the industry like Italy and China with an ultimate aim to secure number one position as natural stone exporter in the world. Growing by leaps and bounds with 1,500 marble quarries, 2000 factories and about 9,000 workshops and last but the least its people's determination to be on the top, Turkey has set new record in exports of natural stone and products thereof. In the 1st half of 2012 Turkish natural stone export shared 44.3 per cent of the mine exports accounting for US$ 857.9 million. It was 11.29 increase over the same period last year.

Black marble and travertine exports boosted by 18.7 per cent, as for the processed marble and travertine it uncreased by 8.8 per cent. In the 1st half of 2012, Turkish stone was mostly shipped to China, USA, India, Italy and Belgium. Turkish marble has been widely used in world famous places such as the entrance hall of St. Peters Church in Vatican, White House in USA, Statehouses of Germany and France, and the United States Congress Building. Turkish marble also adorns Disney Land. Turkey has immense reserves of natural stone including
marble amount to 3.8 billion cum, whereas for travertine the figure is 2.7 billion cum and for granite 995 million cum. Turkish marble has unique features which give it an edge over its competitors. It is free from cracks; has wide range of colours; consistency in quality; natural resistance for air pollution, wear and dirt; sufficient yield of big blocks etc. The important reserves of marble are located in Anatolia and Thrace. The concentrated reserves are also found in Afyon, Balikesir, Denizli, Tokat, Mugla and Canakkale. The Turkish granite is also gaining popularity in international markets like Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. Turkey is emerging fast as a regional construction hub as its sustainable economy has increased country's reliability in terms of business and construction investment. This has increased the entry of global actors with sizeable investment in the sector. Over the next few years, Turkey is set to witness strong growth in the infrastructure and construction sector. The overall scenario is showing great opportunity for the growth of stone industry.

RORSCRACHER SANDSTONE About 20 million years ago, in prehistoric times, Switzerland was actually situated where Lake Constance has established itself at the end of a calm inlet, into which sand and slit were washed. Deep in Rorscracher Sandstone the earth, under the influence of pressure and heat, these deposits caked together, forming what is known today as Rorscracher sandstone. The metre-thick strata of this fine sandstone developed nearly undisturbed. three phases: extraction, block squaring and slabbing. Raw material is extracted using quarry machines on rails and with a single diamond wire.
Invented in 1960s by two Britishers, a multi strand cable with diamond cutting elements has gone through a long journey of research and development resulting into multi-wire diamond wire machine for block slabbing. Till recent past stone quarrying, cutting and processing were taking place at different locations costing high and adding to waste of time and the environmental pollution.
Once extracted, the raw stone blocks are transferred to the second stage system of the "on-track for saving" system. Wires mono-wire machines are used usually in Gantry configuration or using Wires Engineering's specially designed block squaring system.
Currently there are several companies offering multidiamond wire machines for block cutting, but it is only CO.FI. PLAST and Wires Engineering that offer a complete in-quarry solution to the economical and more sustainable production of high quality granite slabs. The integrated system, innovated and adopted by

The optimum selection of the diamond wire specifications is critical for efficient and cost effective cutting of stones. CO.FI.PLAST has designed and developed a new generation of diamond wires with a reduced cable and bead diameter providing improved cutting efficiency, able to satisfy any cutting needs. CO.FI.PLAST and Wires Engineering are the members of Brocco group founded by Emitio Brocco. Both the group members test each others products in unison which allows the two companies to accumulate experience and build up a unique know-how.

NATURAL STONE Hope and Prospects STONE PANORAMA April 2013

Hope, perhaps, is the most powerful aspect of human psyche, which keeps him sustained till his end. Man has seen innumerable ups and downs through ages and the future is still uncertain, butitishope, hope for the better, that keepshimgoing. The world stone industry has been through turbulent times. The year 2008 and 2009 were, perhaps, the worst period for the industry when world economic crisis hit it hard, but it has emerged winner in totality. It is hope which kept him floating. The prospects for the world stone market looks good for the year 2013. But the situation is different in different countries while new markets are emerging. some old
ones are showing declining situation. There are growing and booming markets too. For some years China's stone market has been showing boom owing to on-going large scale construction activities, but now for quite some time, Chinese government seems taking measures to check this property bubble. The demand for stones and other construction materials, which seemed endless, now looks much reduced. The export of stone products from China to South Korea, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia etc. has gone down as these countries now prefer to buy directly from the source because of hike in price of products from China. Chinese stone market may face tough time in 2013.
SPECIAL REPORT
are India, Turkey, Latin America, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Russia. India is currently enjoying boom in construction sector, specially in metropolitan and big cities and the trend is likely to continue for quite some time. The huge investment in the sector has brightened the prospects of growth in stone production and consumption as well as in stone working machinery and ancillary industry. More and more quarry and processing industries are likely to get modernised. This will also help in boosting the export of Indian stone and products thereof. But for this India has to develop and implement industry friendly policy and strengthen power production capacity.
Affected least by the recent economic slow down throughout the world, Brazil's stone market flourished fabulously in the past five years and is going to do well in 2013. The large scale construction activities taking place throughout Brazil are likely to continue further as the country is preparing for the 2014 World Football Cup and 2016 Rio Olympics. There will be large scale investment in the construction sector including stone working machines and equipments etc.
The United States of America, which was the epicenter of the 2008 world economic crisis, is now for quite some time showing up-swing in its housing market. Demand of dimension stone went up by 15 - 20 per cent during 2012 in comparison to 2011. The experts forecast almost the same pattern to continue in 2013. This will surely keep the demand of stones high in the US construction sector. Other than the construction, building renovation market of USA is quite big and so the demand of dimension stones. The recent large scale devastation in USA caused by hurricane and floods, and the following large scale renovation programme is likely to keep the demand for stones high. The other bright spots for the natural stone market in 2013
The prospects for stone markets in Gulf countries in 2013 look brighter with ongoing massive construction activities and many big projects that are in pipe line. Even a small country like Qatar isshowing big possibilities for stoneimports and consumption. In recent years Russia's stone market has come up very well fascinating exporters. Its stone processing factories are likely to run full capacity in 2013 to meet the local demand following up coming big and large scale projects. Time and again natural stone has proved its value as a universal constant in building and architecture context. Year after year its production and consumption have shown worldwide rise in totality. This upward trend and the growing awareness towards stone as the only green building material in the world leaves no doubt about its bright prospects in 2013.
63 STONE PANORAMA April 2013
The Latin American region has been doing economically well for the past many years leading to lot of construction for new homes, office buildings, hotels etc. This is going to take further the demand of stone.
www.stonepanorama.com
In 2013 Turkey seems continuing to take big strides to take its stone production and exports to new heights. It is already a major reference country in the world of marble. The industry is enjoying a golden period with buyers standing in queue to buy its entire production of marble and travertine. China and India are its biggest buyers. There may be slight down in the trend as China's purchases are likely to slowdown.
