CAREER IN STONE MASONRY
STONE PANORAMA July - September 2013

K. Vikram Rastogi
The college educated and trained masons are supposed to be well versed with the operations of the latest stone working machines and tools as well as with the use of computers. This not only increases their efficiency but provides an edge to their skill. Starting institutions for stonemason degree or diploma courses specifically will not only generate a force of well skilled mason for the growing construction industry, but open a new channel for youths to get respectable jobs. This will improve quality of work to match international standards. Skilled masons will always be required for the industry specially those who are well educated and trained to meet the new challenges in the field.
Incorporating natural stone in building structure is an age old fashion or a tradition we may say, which still continues as a prominent feature, specially in most significant buildings. The way natural stone production and consumption is showing progressive trend all over the world, it seems to last for generations to come. This calls for a careful look at the development of stone working skill, specially in modern times, when there is increasing use of latest machines, tools and technology in stone mining, processing, finishing and different applications. Here development of the traditional stone working skill carried forward from generation to generation incorporating and adopting skillful use of new technology and tools is becoming very necessary. And this requires schools and colleges where stone masonry is included in the curriculum. We in India have institutions for architecture and sculpting but, perhaps, nothing to generate skilled mason, which is vital in present boom looking to the construction activities. Today we do not have centres to enroll school level fresh pass-outs to take up masonry diploma or degree courses. Once such courses start, students may get inclined to opt for such courses. Moreover, traditional stone workers will get inspiration to enhance and whet their inherited skill. Once a pass-out mason takes up a career in masonry he has various paths to go ahead to live a
satisfying and rewarding life. He may become a part of different prestigious projects involving both fixing the stone cladding in exterior and interior parts, wall linings and floors. Today worktops for kitchens, bathrooms, restaurants and office receptions is a rightly skilled job leaving lot of scope for the hightly skilled masons. Stonemasonry also involves repair and restoration work to conserve heritage buildings. Here again college trained masons have great field to work. The college educated and trained masons are supposed to be well versed with the operations of the latest stone working machines and tools as well as with the use of computers. This not only increases their efficiency but provides an edge to their skill. Some time back Gujarat Government started two Stone Artisan Park Training Institutes at Dhrangadhra and Ambaji with the motto of building skilled workforce for the stone industry with a vision to create a Centre of Excellence for skill development in stone sector. Other states which have rich resources and tradition of stone use may think of including stonemason courses in schools and colleges. Starting institutions for stonemason degree or diploma courses specifically will not only generate a force of well skilled masons for the growing construction industry, but open a new channel for youths to get respectable jobs. This will improve quality of work to match international standards. Skilled mason will always be required for the industry, specially those who are well educated and trained to meet the new challenges in the field. K. Vikram Rastogi

The demand in nonresidential building construction applications will also increase at a fast pace, spurred by strong growth in office and commercial construction spending and increasing use of tile as a low-cost, low-maintenance flooring alternative to carpets and rugs. Growing rapidly natural stone tiles are expected to overtake porcelain to be the second largest type by 2017. The demand will zoom up due to fast rise residential demand for natural stone flooring. Following the success of its first Stone Festival at Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle last year, VAR (Vernacular Architectural Revival) is staging another Stone Festival this year on 21-29 September. It will once again be in the grounds of The Bowes Museum and at various locations in Teesdale, County Durham. The Stone Festival will celebrate the past, present and future of stonework in the North Pennines, still a hotspot for the UK's stone sector.
Russia: it is no surprise for stone professionals that Russia is an upcoming market. As a wealthy emerging economy, Russia is building a lot. What is interesting to note is that not all visitors are coming from Moscow, but also from alternative places in Russia.
The natural stone market is a very volatile market, with ups and lows depending on the market demand, construction sector situation and a diversity of other factors. Based on our own portal´sstatistics, we analyse here the markets where there has been considerable demand for natural stones in the past six months. Molde's new Cultural Centre of Molde is an architecture miracle created by 3XN architects. The project is located at Mode, Norway, was completed in 2012 covering area of 5,800 sqm. The Norwegian City of Molde has just 25,000
inhabitants, but every July the biggest stars of jazz and about 100,000 jazz enthusiasts flock to the towns world famous international jazz festival. Designing the city's new cultural centre at Molde, the challenge faced by 3XN was to create a building that was flexible and robust enough to provide a framework for cultural life

on both scales.
Plassena is a compact and chaste construction, but by giving the shape a number of breaches architects have created a diversity in its expression, which means that it is flexible and roomy, without seeming very big. The architects have designed the new Cultural Centre
building that grows beyond itself: the steps leading to the roof terrace which run up the outside of the building are made of the same Chinese granite as the faรงade of the building. At any activity at the foot of the steps they double as seating in a kind of amphitheater. 29
The roof has a number of different levels, connected by stairs and also made of granite. The roof-top terrace offers a grand view of the fjord and the mountains beyond. The beauty of the new building is in the style of faรงade cladding. Instead of cladding right-angled stone slabs the architect chose the form of a fying trapeze. To visitor looking up from below the lines merge to waves. Fitting for the jazz festival one might say the granite swings. The stone surface is flamed making it look pixely.
STONE PANORAMA July - September 2013
Located in the City Centre and overlooking both the fjord and the mountains Plassena is an obvious meeting point. With an optimal use of every square meter, 3XN has created a building that can function both when a hundred and 100,000 people gather for concerts, festivals etc.

The new cultural centre has been designed to provide room for celebration, both inside, on top it and around it. Care has been taken to make it strong enough to withstand the rush of people coming throughout the year - year after year. The new cultural centre has been named as Plassena.

NEW INDIAN EMBASSY BUILDING

Indian Embassy Building in Beijing, China, is one of the latest projects executed in a foreign country by a well known team of Indian architects, designers and consultants in Beijing, which Indians can boast of for its excellent design and application of Indian sandstone. The New Indian Embassy Building is the brain child of famous Indian architect: Raj Rewal Associates, New Delhi. Raj Rewal takes pride in telling how Chinese architectural wonders like Longmen Caves located by
the side of Yi River and the Statue of the Indian Monk who had taught the Chinese Sculptors around 7th century AD, remained in his consciousness while developing plan for the embassy building. But the architects focused on embassy building's functional requirement of modern office building whose basic purpose is to disseminate knowledge about India to China. Of course, the basic purpose of an embassy is to create friendship and goodwill among the people of two countries. Embassies today act as messengers which

approached from the main road and would be opened to receive prominent guests. The entrance is approached through a sandstone paved square flanked on one side by a multipurpose hall forming a threshold defined by a delicate sandstone jaali(trellis) based on symbolic circular design. The impressive entrance of the building is enclosed by columns which support the proluding floors at upper levels casting deep shadows and protecting the lower levels from sun's rays in summer and snow wizards in winter. The cantilever surfaces of the Chancery almost serve the purpose of traditional Chinese pagoda. The central feature of the Chancery complex is an atrium covered with a glass dom. It follows the design of basket weaves and farmer's hat, common both in India and China. Elements on the faรงade of the building like balconies, trellis and cladding
materials of sandstone formulate on architectural vocabulary that is based on the inspiration from the past and an authentic structural and functional response to the contemporary needs of a modern office. The new technique of stone cladding with square modular sandstone incorporates the essential insulating material on steel framing to counter the freezing winter of Beijing and hot summer months. The window openings are carefully proportioned and are deeply set within a framework of stone mullions and sure breakers. The beige and pink sandstone panels alternate on the faรงade to create a rich sculpturesque surface highlighting the intrinsic texture and tonal values of Indian sandstone. The new Indian Embassy Building in Beijing was jointly opened by Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Guoping.

ST. PETERSBURG Remembering an old city for its solid and beautiful stone structures is like paying homage to its planners, architects and builders who rendered their best to it. St. Petersburg is one such city built and raised as a dream capital of Russian Tsar, Peter the Great in 1703. After seeing several ups and downs in its historical past, today it is a splendid sight for visitors. The Baroque charm of this city rests in its majestic palaces and gilded domes gleaming in sky making its elegance and richness. St. Petersburg today enjoys a serene and charming existence, open to the world. St Petersburg is a city rich in marble adorning the interiors of its palaces and churches. The city features a palace of marble; called so not for the abundance of marble within its rooms(many of them historical varieties), but because of its exterior. This is the only building in the city clad entirely in marble. The large scale use of marble can also be seen in city's famous winter palace and our Lady of Kazan Cathedral.

This unique work finely exemplifying the rich and luxurious life style of Tsars. The wide scale use of granite can be seen for pavements and wharves. The use of granite is most visible on sidewalks, parapets and as simple coverings. Geographically, the granite found here is a rock coming mostly from nearby Finland.
35 STONE PANORAMA July - September 2013
The use of this unique granite can also be seen in important historical buildings such as the Cathedral of St. Isaac, an impressive monument in the city. Its orbicular granite columns, mostly 16 meters tall weighing 114 tonnes, are in excellent state of conservation. St. Petersburg is unusually attractive carrying a legacy of a rich past. It is unique and elegant for its stone materials.

Currently on the market are similar granite also from Finland that have different names: Carem Red, Baltic Brown and Baltic Green. This material is rarely found elsewhere in the world. In St. Petersburg, we site the banks of the canals where parapets, pilasters and steps are made from this granite.

MARBLES FROM PORTUGAL
www.worldstonefairs.com
The " Estremoz Marbles" Portugal were for decades the hallmark of Portuguese Dimension Stone. Mostly economic constraints associated with a lack of knowledge regarding the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of different rocks of prescribers, created a "fashion" that focuses primarily on the homogeneity of the material without having in account its longevity. We note that there was no depletion of raw material; in fact almost every varieties of marble have enough reserves to sustain a mining activity for several hundred of years.
STONE PANORAMA July - September 2013

Geology and Mining Heritage Despite its dimension, Portugal has mining units of ornamental rocks throughout is territory. In fact, the North its rich in igneous rocks, particularly granites while the microcrystalline sedimentary calcareous are concentrated in the Maciço Calcário Estremenho (Fig. 2). There are considerable reserves of limestone breccias in Algarve (S. Brás de Alportel - Tavira, southern Portugal) as well as nepheline syenite, unique in the World and explored in Serra de Monchique (Algarve). Schists have an extractive pole of considerable dimension in the area of Porto, registering also additional exploration in Alentejo, in Barrancos. The marbles are exploited in the province of Alentejo, southern Portugal, between Sousel and Alandroal, which can be individualized as the Estremoz anticline. This main symmetrical and elliptic geological structure, orientated NW-SE and measuring some 42x8 km is located within the greater Ossa Morena Zone geological unity in which Lower Palaeozoic marbles with ornamental interest outcrop over 27 km2 (Moreira & Vintém, 1997). The Estremoz anticline is the main centre for Portuguese marble exploitation and one of the most important internationally. A large number of quarries in the area greatly simplifies the access to the marbles and provide unique geological windows some of which reach some 150 m in depth. The marbles preserve the effects of the Variscan Orogeny and several structures preserved in the quarries originate beautiful aesthetic patterns that frequently are emphasized in the final application of the marbles. Other Palaeozoic marbles, which are less relevant, also outcrop in Alentejo (Vila Verde de Ficalho, Trigaches, Serpa, Viana do Alentejo and Escoural). In every case, the marbles occur integrated in Volcano-Sedimentary
Complexes. Although local variations, a similar lithostratigraphic sequence essentially made up of marbles, marble-schist, and intercalations of felsic and basic volcanic rocks is shown. The textural and mineralogical differences between the marbles in these locations are marked by the distinct position that they occupy within the Variscan Orogeny in Portugal (Lopes, 2003). In the last decades, several exploration studies have been undertaken to ealuate this resource (Gonçalves, 1972; Reynaud & Vintém, 1994; IGM, IST & UE, 2000; Vintém, et al., 2003; Carvalho, 2008). Bearing in mind the interaction between mining and the environment, the application of methodologies that allow the proficient land use planning of this area have been studied, which will lead to an efficient global land management (Falé et al., 2004; 2006). It is well known that these marbles have been quarried since antiquity as a valuable geological resource. The oldest evidence of recognition of its use dates back to
the year of 370 BC. This archaeological find is represented by a tombstone ordered by the Carthaginian captain Maarbal in their trip from Faro to Elvas and was discovered by investigator Father Espanca in Terena (Alandroal) (Brito da Luz, 2005). Later. in the Roman Period, the marbles have been widely used as structural and decorative features of buildings that today are fabulous architectural monuments, e.g. the Roman Temple in Évora the Roman Theatre in Mérida (Spain) etc. In the Middle Ages marbles were used for the construction of palaces, castles and other buildings. From the 15th Century these marbles began to have a more prominent use, both nationally and internationally, having been transported by Portuguese explorers to Africa, India and Brazil. During the next few centuries, these marbles were searched for ornamental purposes and they appear inlaid with various polychromatic associations in several national and international monuments, e.g. Jerónimos Monastery (Portugal), Escorial Monastery (Spain), several monuments in Rome (Italy), Louvre and Versailles (France), 2003). In the 20th century, with the introduction of new exploitation and manufacturing technologies and especially in the 70's with the opening of the Portuguese economy to the exterior, the marble industry took a step forward and since then marble has been exported worldwide (Brilha et al., 2005).
The marbles correspond just to a small part of the Estremoz anticline. Considering that only 30% of the 27 km2 that the marbles occupy are explored, 10% from exploitation and explorations up to 100 m depth, we obtain 220 million tonnes which, is reported by Engineering Institute of Porto. Since its creation it has mobilized companies, universities and institutes for submitting projects with the aim of Promoting the Natural Portuguese Stone, Environmental Sustainability in Extractive Industry and the Development of New Technologies for the Competitiveness of Natural Stone. At the moment two of the main projects are already approved and in progress and, as they include the participation of several companies and two Industry Associations (ASSIMAGRA and ANIET), the transfer of results to companies will be a reality. These projects come against the inevitable development that companies in the region will have to suffer and pass necessarily through a process of modernization, where the concept of sustainability must always be present. There are several definitions of sustainability or sustainable development, being that one of the most quoted and somehow generalized, is the one published by the Brundtland Commission (World Commission on

Thus, according to this committee, sustainable development "is the one that satisfies present needs without compromising the possibility of future generations to satisfy their own needs" (Bonito, 2010). Therefore, the companies of the Sector should develop models in order to optimize the three indicators of sustainability: the environmental, economic and social aspects. In the environmental indicator it is crucial the control of the volume of waste produced, energy and water consumption, consumable materials, the optimization in the traffic of mobile equipment and the prevention of environmental accidents. In the economic indicator it is fundamental to quantifying the costs of the production process and the income generated, costs for facilities, collateral and environmental costs, not forgetting also possible costs involved. Finally, in the social indicator it should be taken in consideration the promotion of direct and indirect employment, without neglecting a fundamental economic parameter which is the
Dimension Stones Production Despite a relentless global economic recession, slightly contradicted by the contribution of countries like China and India, both with an increasingly evident position in the landscape of world trade in ornamental rocks, Portugal, though it has been losing market share and the difficulty of remaining competitive with some Eastern countries, Turkey and Brazil, remains firmly in a prominent position in terms of production of dimension stones thanks to the quality shown by the stone material and the national adaptation business. On the weight of the national market of Dimension Stone, marble from Estremoz, Borba and Vila Viçosa for many years were positioned in the top position in regards to extraction, processing and export, however,

progressively, it has been losing ground to other ornamental rocks, specifically, the sedimentary limestone of the Maciço Calcário Estremenho, with strong development. Thanks to the Chinese market and also to the clusters which have gradually been gaining market and are now a reality on the production of kitchen worktops. The numbers are quite elucidative of the importance that, at present day, the extraction of marble and limestone have in Portugal. If can be emphasize that these values are only related to the production of raw material and not to the value added by processing and implementation of the same. Different materials require different processing according to the finishing and the subsequent application and dimension Stones Characteristics. The excellence of the marbles of Alentejo makes them very versatile, allowing its use on decks, coverings of interior and exterior (outdoors and indoors) and decoration of interior (fireplaces, floors, tables,
staircases, kitchen countertops, etc.). They are also often used in urban furniture such as benches, garden tables and fountains, in funerary art, as masonry in engineering works, as structural elements in buildings and for paving of sidewalks and roads. Its workability and variety of colors makes them the first choice of stones for sculptors who, throughout the ages have produced artworks great of refinement and high aesthetic value. The high quality, fine to medium-grained, "Estremoz Marbles" show excellent mechanical-physical properties as well as aesthetic beauty, which is attested by the prices they fetch and also by the large volumes of rock quarried, places Portugal at the forefront of world marble production. Colours vary from white, cream, pink, grey or black and streaks with any combination of these colours are possible (e.g. white with pink streaks). The types of pink marble are internationally coveted because of their quality and beauty and locally, highquality, white or cream-coloured blocks are also used in statue manufacture. Analyzing the values related to physical properties and
carbonated composition of various Portuguese marbles and some from Turkey, Italy, Greece, China and Brazil it appears that Portuguese marbles from the zone of Estremoz - Borba - Vila Viรงosa present values perfectly framed with the values revealed by the other marbles. Regarding the compression breaking load before and after freezing, the values are relatively similar, with the exception of the values presented by the "Bianco Carrara Unito C" from Italy, "Imperial Pink" from Brazil and "Salome" from Turkey with very high values for these kinds of dimension stone. For values of bending strength, the Portuguese marbles exhibit very favourable results The remaining parameters have values within the expected carbonate rocks, possessing Portuguese marble optimal characteristics for applications in interior and exterior, funerary art and creation of furniture. Land planning and other activities in Estremoz Marble Region The areas of intense mining activity, strongly dynamizing of the economies of the regions where they develop, inevitably mischaracterize the environment, transforming it in most cases permanently. Besides Marble Routes, the region has singular conditions and astonishing scenarios to the practice of adventurous tourism and to the realization of radical sports like "offroad" events, competitions of "BTT", "Trial Bike" and "Motor Trial". The first edition of the Challenge Trophy event which happened in May 2010, in the Counties of Sousel, Estremoz, Borba, Vila Viçosa and Alandroal counted with one hundred athletes and lasted for two days where the participants had to realize several orienteering and obstacle competitions, taking advantage of the fact that some quarries with interrupted mining works present technical and safety conditions for its realization. Certain quarries have high quality acoustic conditions allowing the realization of cultural events, such as concerts. One example of that is the "Ópera vai aos Mármores", which includes the realization of an opera in a quarry that will be a great production with national and international projection. Therefore, the reutilization of inoperative quarries close to the urban centres, can be reconverted in art and leisure places. These can be done with low funding projects, involving some superficial modeling, screen planting trees, building of infrastructures and adaption of the land for appropriate use and security. Conclusion It should be noted that the values achieved by the production of carbonate rocks in Portugal are particularly due to the rising production of calcareous sedimentary rocks, in detriment of the marbles production that in recent years have been falling. The stagnation of national prices and the fall of the
The marble has life and is temperamental, changes colour and texture with the daylight, humidity and weather. It also ages! Its diversity makes it unique and can show truly abstract paintings. Their traces show up winding convoluted and strong personality, imposing itself in the eyes of the beholder. The diversity of colors makes it irreverent. Nevertheless it is to be presented constant, reflecting the constancy of color appearance, determined by the conditions that prevailed in its genesis. Those who work the marble, first they have to know it well and become familiar. Only then they will be able to shape it wisely. It is not easy to tame a rebellious nature but, there are those who have done it so masterfully, like Michelangelo, Bernini, among other geniuses of the sculpture. Armed with art and skills they possessed the ability to give life to stone. Also today there are wonderful sculptors but they have technology to help them to facilitate their work. The marble is not just for carving. Its application as a raw material for construction has also been done for millennia, since early man discovered the potential of this noble material. The art of giving more value to the marble, or other type of dimension stones, requires more than just technical training. Sensitivity is needed since the extraction step, through all the stages included in the processing until the proper application of work. Only then we can take advantage of a raw material of exceptional beauty, otherwise the final result could be disastrous both from a technical standpoint as well as from an aesthetic point of view. One last note to the great work done by Antonio Manuel Esteves Henriques, who for 30 years through his magazine "Rochas & Equipamentos", Seminars and Conferences, Publication of Books and many other activities, boosted the Dimension Stone of Portuguese Sector and promoted it all over the World, whom we want to pay our sincere tribute.

"The stone materials from Puglia - she continued - can represent an even more important resource if we raise the awareness of their high quality and if the importance of their use and promotion is recognised. Carrara with its marble and over two thousand years of history has always been at the fore of the industry with avantgarde companies specialised in processing natural stone and the manufacturing of the best in today's technology. With CARRARAMARMOTEC 2014 Carrara is planning an event which will place the trade fair and the Apuo-Lingurian Versilian area at the centre of attention of the industry the world over. Over several years now, the natural stone industry has been enjoying a favourable climates with a constant increase in quarrying and trade because of increasing use of natural stone in building industry, specially in high end buildings all over the world. 2012 was a positive year for Italian stone with exports to the tune of $1 billion and 10 million Euro for a total quantity of 4.178,259 tonnes, showing an increase of 9.8 per cent in value and 4.17 per cent the quantity. This shows CARRARAMARMOTEC is back with renewed vigour. The best performance was shown by marble, both as a raw material and finished product, with increase in both quantity and value though export of granites showed some decline in quantity, but there was increase in value. North America, Italy's traditional trade partner was soon active again in 2012.
