FROM THE CHAIRMAN As a not-for-profit community focussed company, ETC has been giving back to local communities for over 26 years. We launched the ETC Community Support Fund in September 2012 and since that time it’s been our pleasure to commit $510,000 to a total of 76 worthwhile organisations. The ETC Community Support Fund is designed to help organisations reduce disadvantage, generate opportunity, increase support services and/or build capacity in the communities in which we operate. This magazine provides a snapshot of the organisations that have been supported through the ETC Community Support Fund over the past 12 months.

Kempsey Family Support Service Project: Speak Out 4 Kids (SO4K) $5,750 Kempsey Family Support Service (KFSS) was able to expand its services thanks to a grant from the ETC Community Support Fund for their Speak Out 4 Kids program. The program provides children with practical awareness sessions on how to make safe choices, identify their safe people and to raise awareness of the importance of a safe community. KFSS Manager Diane Garfield said the ETC grant has enabled them to reach a much broader group of children. “The funding allows the workers to travel, purchase the required resources and spend time with the children at local primary schools,� Ms Garfield said.
Training Ship Culgoa Australian Navy Cadets Project: Sun Shelters - $800 The Australian Navy Cadets who attend the Training Ship Culgoa barracks now have protection from the elements with the purchase of new gazebos funded by ETC. The barracks, located in South West Rocks, is a youth training camp for males and females aged 12 to 20 years and is sponsored by the Royal Australian Navy. Chief Petty Officer Lorraine Schloeffel said the gazebos would be utilised by the cadets whilst undertaking water activities and community service events.

House with No Steps Project: Creative Collaborations - $11,990 An exciting new pilot project called Creative Collaborations is underway in the Northern Rivers after receiving a grant from the ETC Community Support Fund. House with No Steps (HWNS) Area Manager Tina Purdon said that Creative Collaborations was a project made up of the young adults with a disability attending the HWNS Ballina Day Service. “The ETC grant will fund a market stall to give young people with a disability the opportunity to display and sell their art and gourmet produce, in a genuine community and artisan marketplace,” Ms Purdon said. “This will provide great promotion of the skills and abilities of people with disabilities.”
Coffs Toy Library Project: School Play Group Integration Resources - $1,706 The Toy Library was able to purchase new culturally diverse resources using the funding provided by the ETC Community Support Fund. “The toys represented a variety of ethnic backgrounds for use in imaginative play, role playing and musical activities,” Toy Library Treasurer Beryl Sharp said. Schools, local families, family day care centres and playgroups have benefited from the toys and educational games available for loan from the Toy Library.

The Smith Family Project: Purchase resources for Learning Clubs, $3,000 Extra help is at hand for Coffs Harbour Primary School students struggling to keep up at school. Thanks to a funding boost from the ETC Community Support Fund, the Smith Family was able to purchase educational resources to be used in their after school “Learning Clubs”. “We’ve value added our services by purchasing resources such as tablets and educational games,” Smith Family Program Coordinator Darrin Allen said.

Port Macquarie Youth Hub
Project: Physical exercise equipment to support Healthy Lifestyle programs - $5,000 The kids who attend Port Macquarie’s Youth Hub now have access to outdoor physical training equipment after receiving a grant from the ETC Community Support Fund. Port Macquarie Youth Hub Manager Michael Gilmour said the equipment enabled a whole body workout and supported the Youth Hub’s Healthy Lifestyle programs. “There has been positive outcomes for some of the disengaged and Indigenous youth who participate in the programs,” Mr Gilmour said. “It’s getting kids off the streets and that’s been a real life changer for a lot of people.”

Bushland Health Group Limited for Tidy Up Taree Project: Taree Civic Heart - $11,000 The Tidy Up Taree project was able to take on its next phase the “Taree Civic Heart” thanks to a donation from the ETC Community Support Fund. Tidy Up Taree organiser, Graham Brown said they’ve now been able to revitalise this space to create a focal point for people to meet and relax. “The grant funds were used to purchase and install unique items to give it character as well as a welcoming feel. These included new coloured stones, artwork, sculptures from the local gallery, and aboriginal footprints to tell a story,” Mr Brown said. “It’s really changed the look and feel to the area. The positive vibe that has come out of the project is amazing.”

Harrington Community Action Group Project: Sound system for the Harrington Multi Purpose Centre at Harrington Waters, $3,000 After receiving a grant from the ETC Community Support Fund, Harrington’s Community Function Centre now has brand new speakers and a sound system.
Harrington Community Action Group Public Officer Margaret Ward said there was a large percentage of retired people in the area who were having difficulty hearing during events at the Centre. To address this issue, Margaret sought funding through the ETC Community Support Fund to help benefit the local residents. “Now the speakers are up and running and have already been used for a couple of community gatherings,” Margaret said.
Port Macquarie Lions Club Project: Lions Lookout Regeneration and Improvement Project - $4,900 Port Macquarie’s most iconic and historical lookout has had a major face lift after funding and support was provided to the Port Macquarie Lions Club by the ETC Community Support Fund. Lions Club Publicity Officer Colin Hardwick said the lookout was significant in local history and is visited by thousands of people every year, including travellers from all over the world.
Uniting Care NSW ACT Project: Growing Together Community Garden - $15,000
Nambucca’s UnitingCare and Uniting Church congregation have joined forces to develop a Growing Together Community Garden project. UnitingCare Community Development Manager Romayne Page said the aim of the garden was to connect older people with the community by having local seniors program participants attend and share their knowledge. “The project wouldn’t have got off the ground without the kick start from ETC,” Ms Page said. “We can now include a bush tucker corner, chicken house, water feature, swing, and murals.”

Access Community Group Project: Next Gen Wollongong - $11,257 Sixteen young people from Wollongong were given the opportunity to gain valuable insights into business through their participation in the Next Gen Wollongong program provided by Access Community Group. The program provided mentoring and employment for Year 10 and 11 high school students to undertake routine tasks for small and micro businesses in the Wollongong LGA. “Without the funds from the ETC Community Support Fund, this project wouldn’t exist. This funding allowed us to continue working with kids from local schools who might otherwise not have had these opportunities,” Access Community Group Business Development Manager Sarah Wilson said.

YMCA Macksville Project: Youth Brightside Mental Health & Wellbeing Program - $9,640 The Youth Brightside Program is a pilot recovery program that will benefit young people between 12-18 years of age who have mental illness, ranging from mild anxiety to mood disorders including depression. Thanks to a grant from the ETC Community Support Fund, the YMCA Macksville can continue to provide this program. One of the Brightside participants, Hope, said the program had given her greater direction. “Since we’ve been doing the program, I’ve been wagging school less and staying focused. It’s given me something to look forward to. Now I want to finish Year 12 and become a Chef,” said Hope.
District 44 Masonic Charities Inc. Project: To purchase a new transmitter for the local community radio station - $4,000
Tuncurry based radio station Great Lakes FM can now continue to entertain and inform the members of the local community. Station Manager Andrew Farr said the money from the ETC Community Support Fund was used to contribute towards the cost of a new transmitter after their existing one broke down. “Great Lakes FM does not receive any Government funding and relies on sponsorship, grant applications, membership and fund raising to keep us on the airwaves,” Mr Farr said. Not having the funds available to purchase a new transmitter, the community radio station sought assistance from the District 44 Masonic Charities Incorporated who were able to secure funding from ETC.

Autism Spectrum Australia Project: Classroom Fit-out for new Autism School Site - $15,000 The Coffs Coast is set to benefit from a new school to be located in Coffs Harbour which will provide autism-specific education in early 2016. The ETC Community Support Fund will be supporting the new school by funding the classroom fit-out for the students. ASPECT Philanthropy Coordinator Iris Lamb said ETC’s support will play an important part in improving key developmental and educational outcomes for children living with Autism in the Mid North Coast.

Warrina Women & Children’s Refuge Project: Friendship Garden - $3,500 The ETC Community Support Fund has enabled the Warrina Women & Children’s Refuge to provide women in the Coffs Coast with a Friendship Garden. Refuge Counsellor Lou Blackie said the purpose of the Friendship Garden was to provide local women and children with an opportunity to gather together, reduce isolation, be safe, learn new skills, and increase their confidence. “The ETC funding has provided the edging for the garden beds, plants, and essential items for women such as sunblock, hats, and tools,” Ms Blackie said.
