Secondly, after completing the profile of the 100 ChangeAgentswe would be felicitated with awards during H1 this year. This year’s budget is wonderful at least from the infrastructure point of view, which has provisioned to invest as much as Rs.3,96,135 crore in creating and upgrading infrastructure in the next financial year. Roads and highways allocation up to Rs.64,900 crore from Rs. 52,447 crore revised. Very good thing is that rural roads construction work to accelerate to 133 km/day in 201617 from 73 km/day in 2011-14. Similarly, there is a provision of 8% increase in allocation for railway expenditure to Rs. 1,31,000 crore; 3,500km of railway lines to be laid in 2017-18 against 2,800km in 2016-17. Besides the creation of affordable housing has been given infrastructure status and tax incentives have been given, too. So, the CIOs in these related sectors would find them being over occupied for next one year or so. The reduction in customs and excise duties on machinery, parts used to manufacture solar power project components, would certainly boost the sector. Similarly, the real industry may get fillip because of the promise of the government to create affordable housing by 2019. So, when all these developments are going to happen, there is every chance that the bad guys would be attracted to India and would try to disturb the peace by barging into the networks. Therefore, the CIOs need to be extra cautious now towards safeguarding their organizations’ reputation and revenue. Indicators are already there that the 2017 would have more cyber-attacks on Indian economy compared to previous years. The CIOs are therefore advised by the experts that they should not take security as after though and keep on testing their networks on a regular basis.

8.4 Billion Connected “Things” to be Active in 2017

Gartner forecasts that 8.4 billion connected things will be in use worldwide in 2017, up 31 percent from 2016, and will reach 20.4 billion by 2020. Total spending on endpoints and services will reach almost $2 trillion in 2017. Regionally, Greater China, North America and Western Europe are driving the use of connected things and the three regions together will represent 67 percent of the overall Internet of Things (IoT) installed base in 2017. In addition to smart meters, applications tailored to specific industry verticals (including manufacturing field devices, process sensors for electrical generating plants and real-time location devices for healthcare) will drive the use of connected things among businesses through 2017, with 1.6 billion units deployed. However, from 2018 onwards, 6

cross-industry devices, such as those targeted at smart buildings (including LED lighting, HVAC and physical security systems) will take the lead as connectivity is driven into higher-volume, lower cost devices. In 2020, cross-industry devices will reach 4.4 billion units, while vertical-specific devices will amount to 3.2 billion units. While consumers purchase more devices, businesses spend more. Consumer applications will amount to $725 billion in 2017. By 2020, hardware spending from both segments will reach almost $3 trillion. “IoT services are central to the rise in IoT devices,” said Denise Rueb, research director at Gartner. Total IoT services spending (professional, consumer and connectivity services) is on pace to reach $273 billion in 2017.

Telit Expands End-to-End IoT Reach with GainSpan Acquisition

Telit has agreed to acquire Silicon Valley-based GainSpan Corporation (“GainSpan”). GainSpan is a wireless connectivity solution provider that specializes in the design and development of ultra-low power Wi-Fi technology. The company manufactures and commercializes chips and modules for battery-powered devices and related intellectual property (IP) with embedded software, including network stacks and application reference designs. GainSpan has over 90 employees, mostly R&D and application and support engineers, spread across an R&D center in Bangalore, India and San Jose, California. “As we enter an era of maturity for the IoT, we are starting to witness the appearance of spaces within it such as the Internet of Sensors, the Internet of Cars, and the Internet of Digital,” said Oozi Cats, CEO of Telit. “With few exceptions, the ability to cut the power cord is an essential growth engine for all these branches of the IoT.” The new business addition positions Telit to expand its complete end-to-end IoT solutions portfolio and address the growing market of battery-powered devices that rely on Wi-Fi and other low-power technologies.
