age purchasing price of the real estate. People have got more bargaining power now. Secondly, once the budget comes out and taxation gets rationalized, there would be more impact on the market. GST is most likely be in place during the second quarter and would see a wave of changes in the pricings and investment inflow into the country. Once this happens the implementation of the high-profile projects including infrastructure modernizations would be expedited. There would be more import tax to help local manufacturing. There would be more thrust on the technology education in this budget and development of IPRs. So as a prediction, 2017 would bring more access to the easy finance. On the other hand, there is expected to be more cloud, machine learning, IOT, security and 3d Printing, during this year. CIOs would certainly be cooperative with each other while exchanging learnings. As there would be more cyber-attacks this year, security would take the center stage and it would get preference in the IT spend of the organizations. Plus, cloud would keep on getting more and more attention from the market.

sooner had we entered the new year, we would be hitting the budget of the year in February 1st; which is one way good that without much waste of time, we are ready for action. When we saw 2016 has been a year of action from the course correction perspective, we expect 2017 to be more thrilling one. There would be a lot more reforms for the financial equality and regularity. Along with this, the lending and borrowing of the banking and finance institutes would be different now. The rate of interest would be different now, which has already been one percent less in the new year. And with GST in place, it would also have role in further pulling down the rate of interest. The net impact of the reforms means rationalization of different industries. For example, the demonetization of high-denomination currencies had impact on the real estate industry. It is believed that there has been slash in the aver-

Worldwide IT Spending to Reach USD 3.5 Trillion in 2017

B Y S A N J AY @ A C C E N T I N FO M E D I A . C O M

Worldwide IT spending is projected to total $3.5 trillion in 2017, a 2.7 percent increase from 2016, according to Gartner. However, this growth rate is down from earlier projections of 3 percent. John-David Lovelock, research vice president at Gartner said, “2017 was poised to be a rebound year in IT spending. Some major trends have converged, including cloud, blockchain, digital business and artificial intelligence. Normally, this would have pushed IT spending much higher than 2.7 percent growth. However, some of the political uncertainty in global markets has fostered a wait-and-see approach causing many enterprises to forestall IT investments. The Gartner Worldwide IT Spending Forecast is the leading indicator of major technology trends across the hardware, software, IT services and telecom markets. IT and business executives have been using these highly anticipated quarterly reports to recognize market opportunities and challenges, and base their critical business decisions on proven methodologies rather than guesswork. Worldwide devices spending (PCs, tablets, ultramobiles and mobile phones) is projected to remain flat in 2017 at $589 billion. A replacement cycle in the PC market and strong pricing and functionality of premium ultramobiles will help drive growth in 2018. Emerging markets will drive the replacement cycle for mobile phones as smartphones in these markets are used as a main computing device and replaced more regularly than in mature markets. The worldwide IT services market is forecast to grow 4.2 percent in 2017.

Microsoft has introduced new Azure enhancements, to enable enterprises to move their largest workloads into the cloud and run them without any changes, with the best-in-class support for large workloads, and the lowest possible cost. Microsoft is constantly looking at ways to make it easier for its customer to manage their workloads in the cloud. Earlier, the virtual machine (VM) availability SLA required at least two instances, which presented challenges for some existing on-premises workloads that could not scale-out or where scale and management were expensive and cumbersome. Now Microsoft will be the first major hyper scale vendor to offer an SLA availability commitment on single instance VMs on Azure. This will enable businesses to move even more workloads into Azure and take advantage of the agility of the cloud without compromising on your expectations of availability. For more information about our SLA for Virtual Machines, please visit our SLA page. The new SLA is a result of extensive work by Microsoft to improve availability of the Azure infrastructure. This includes building innovative machine-learning algorithms to predict failing hardware early and offering premium storage to help improve reliability and performance of attached disks.

EY Releases India Information Security Report for 2016-17

While India is spending more on cybersecurity each year, organizations are still not confident of their ability to sense, resist and respond to cyber threats says a latest survey by EY, the global professional services organization. The report, titled Path to cyber resilience: Sense, Resist, React: EY’s 19th Global Information Security Survey 2016-17, was released here today by Dr. Gulshan Rai, National Cybersecurity Coordinator, National Security Council, Prime Minister’s Office, Government of India. Now in its 19th year, the EY Survey is based on responses from 1,735 global C-suite executives, including 124 CXOs from India. 69% of Indian respondents reported an increase in their cybersecurity budgets over the last 12 months and almost three-fourths expect budgets to increase further in the next year. Despite the increased investments, 75% of the Indian respondents say that their cybersecurity function does not fully meet the organization’s needs. These findings are in line with the global trend where more than half of the respondents reported increased budgets on cybersecurity, but 86% are still not confident of their cybersecurity function. Outdated information security architecture and controls has most increased risk exposure for India over the last 12 months, with as many as 61% of the respondents citing this aspect as their topmost vulnerability. Careless or unaware employees is their second-most important concern (58%), while vulnerabilities related to mobile computing, social media and cloud computing also feature prominently as contributing to enhanced risk exposure for corporate India. Among threats, the majority (54%) believe that cyber-attacks are primarily targeted at defacing/ disrupting organizations or towards stealing intellectual property or data (51%), followed by fraud (48%).

BROCADE INDIA // INTERVIEW

ACHIEVING PERVASIVE VISIBILITY THROUGHOUT THE NETWORK

With enterprise networks turning extremely agile, extensively automated and highly visible, Brocade’s George Chacko sheds light on Brocade’s new datacenter product offerings in an exclusive interview with Enterprise IT World.

“Organizations that are going through transformation need networks that are extremely agile, extensively automated and highly visible”

What is the USP for Brocade’s new Datacenter Product Portfolio? Brocade launched an expanded Brocade SLX family with new innovative switches that feature unparalleled network visibility and the addition of Brocade Workflow Composer Automation Suites for turnkey automation. This is the industry’s first data center networking portfolio to deliver agility at all layers of the data center stack, while being open to provide customers with choice. Building on the routing solution that Brocade introduced in September, the new Brocade data center switches deliver flexible leaf, spine and edge connectivity while leveraging the Brocade SLX Insight Architecture. By embedding network visibility on every router and switch, organizations can achieve pervasive visibility throughout the network to quickly identify problems, accelerate mean-time-to-remediation and improve overall service levels. New automation suites, including Network Essentials, Data Center Fabrics and Internet Exchange Points for the Brocade Workflow Composer platform, powered by StackStorm, provide automated network provisioning, validation, troubleshooting and remediation workflows. These automation suites are ideal for custom-

ers who want to jumpstart their automation journey with pre-built workflows to accelerate time-to-value. Why is agility so critical in Enterprise operations today? According to IDC, two-thirds of CEOs at Global 2000 companies will place digital transformation at the center of their corporate strategies by the end of 2017. CEOs recognize they must become a digital organization to accelerate the pace of innovation and drive competitive advantage or risk being displaced by nimbler competitors. Organizations that are going through digital transformation need networks that are extremely agile, extensively automated and highly visible. Fast innovation can only happen with an agile IT foundation where automation works seamlessly with network visibility while digitally connecting all IT domains and functions together to eliminate silos and deliver end-to-end automation. What are your market plans for the new product portfolio in India? The next gen data center product portfolio trails are happening in different parts of the world. The target customers are large enterprises and banks

GEORGE CHACKO, PRINCIPAL SYSTEMS ENGINEER & LEAD TECHNICAL CONSULTANT, BROCADE INDIA

who have large data centers. How do you see the Indian data center market fairing in the coming years? The Indian data center market is buoyed by positive sentiments in the economy and the strong resurgence of growth-related projects across verticals such as banking, insurance, retail, manufacturing, telecom and government projects such as Digital India, Make in India and Smart Cities. Even emerging verticals like education, hospitality, healthcare and communications and media need customized data center solutions. Market opportunity for data centers in India continues to mature with the growing prevalence of 4G, broadband connectivity and emergence of disruptive technologies like cloud and virtualization. In the coming years, Indian enterprises will focus on building intelligent data centers that focus on optimizing existing hardware assets by adding additional software capabilities. Several factors such as physical location, types of applications supported, power and cooling, downtime, floor area will help determine an organizations’ tech investment plan.

he Union Budget 2017 will come out on the 1st of February 2017, amidst arguably one of the most uncertain times in the economy. A chain of significant events starting from GST have impacted the entire country financially. An evident lack of confidence in the economy, as witnessed by decrease in investment. As was noted based on data till before the historic demonetization, the country fell short of GDP targets for 2016. However, one certainty that is expected to be reassured with the budget is government’s push for digitization. The government’s mega initiatives of ‘Digital India’, ‘Make in India’, and ‘Startup India’ have already resulted and proliferation of digital devices and given traction to the IT industry. Heavy push on investments in the sector, couple with breakthrough indigenous innovations has enabled the IT industry to become the fastest growing sector in the country. Furthermore, with demonetization turning out to be a boon for the IT industry,

cashless transactions and online banking are going to further drive players in the space. As the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley rolls out the budget, a hopeful Enterprise IT community sits in anticipation of favorable policies as not just a push but a reassurance of government’s trust and endorsement of information technology. With the entire country to go cashless, the IT industry has a big part to play in the next phase of India’s progress as a digital economy.

FACTORS THAT WILL SHAPE UP BUDGET 2017-18 2016 witnessed a number of announcements by the government aimed at putting India on the path towards a cashless economy. e-Governance and e-payments are expected to be a big theme. The previous two budgets of the Modi Government systematically created frameworks and processes to give traction to initiatives like ‘Startup India’, ‘Digital India’ and ‘Make in India’. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) which is scheduled to be rolled out

in July this year will also impact the budget substantially. It is expected that the budget will entail compliance regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the same. One of BJP government’s primary agendas over the years has been to not just promote business and trade but also significantly improve the ease of doing business in the country. With the surge in startups and the increasing dependencies of businesses across verticals on IT, digitization should be greeted with a number of incentives. The recent slowdown in economy has been tough on investors and an off target GDP assessment resulted in lack of fund infusion into new startups. This resulted in a huge markdown last year. Promoting new businesses and agenda of technology adoption and proliferation is going to be big in this budget. As Alok Dubey, CFO, Acer India points out, “The Union Budget for the year 2017-18 is likely to be unique as many prime factors like demonetization, GST, cashless economy measures, will play a key role this year.” Rajiv Srivastava, MD, HP India believes

this will be crucial in not just promoting digital transition but also driving the IT industry, which carries this mantle of nation-wide digitization. He

opines, “The Government’s objective should be to enable this transition from the current taxation system as smooth and orderly as possible — both

for itself and for businesses and consumers. It will be important to outline a roadmap for IT manufacturers for the implementation of the new GST policy well in time.”

EMERGENCE OF AN IT ENABLED ECONOMY The Modi-led BJP government has been playing on the Digital trump card for over two years. There have been a number of landmark announcements that would signal this intent. The centralization of taxes, increasing dependence on e-Governance, incentives and benefits to IT JANUARY 2017

industry and the growing startup landscape are all examples of an India gradually going digital. Last year’s budget did much to narrow this technology gap between urban and rural India. This year’s budget is set to take technology adoption in the country to unprecedented levels. Anil Valluri, President, NetApp India & SAARC comments, “With the recent move of demonetization trying to shift our cash driven economy of 1.2 billion people and getting them to leap frog to the digital world is unprecedented in history. This is a significant leap towards becoming a digital economy and the budget now needs to focus on how digital can become entrenched and become a way of life, while continuing to focus on growth and providing adequate support to the various pillars of each program so that the economy is on a sustained growth path.” This idea is further explained by Vivekanand Venugopal, Vice President & General Manager, Hitachi Data Systems, India who says, “The Government’s effort GST is a definitive step towards accelerating digitalization. The policies and measures taken by the Government should help bring in economic stability, investment24 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD

friendly policies, increase ease-of-doing-business, improve long-term tax incentives, along with timely deal-closures and project clearances.” Budget 2017 should have written digital all over it. Vinaya Varma, CEO of mjunction, a JV between Tata Steel and SAIL adds, “I look forward to a budget which carries forward the PM’s vision of a Digital India in the truest sense of the term and implementation in letter and spirit of the Startup India program. This will boost innovative thinking and fresh ideas so crucial for India’s economy now.” Tenon Facility Management and Security Group Chairman, Major Manjit Rajain sums it up in a single line, “The forthcoming Union Budget is expected to unveil reform-centric policies and an action plan that would help boost the growth.”

INCENTIVIZING DIGITIZATION AND DIGITAL TRANSACTIONS As the entire country strives to go cashless in the aftermath of the historic demonetization, the government’s firm backing is necessary. incentivizing mobile wallets and online banking. Bhavin Turakhia, Co-founder and CEO at Directi believes, “2016 saw a slew of announcements made by the government. With the goal of putting our country on the path towards a cashless economy, the Union Budget 2017-18 should include definitive SOPs and tax rebates to encourage and boost e-payments.” Abhimanyu Bhosale, Co - Founder, CEO at Livehealth a startup in the healthcare domain supports this idea and points out that online transactions, will check the economic slowdown. He says, “The interesting thing to look forward for this budget would be how the government promotes and incentivizes electronic payments to minimize economic slowdown as much as possible.” Rajeev Jain, CFO of Intex Technologies believes that the cashless economy is more a reality than ever before. He believes, “Smartphones will play a crucial role in supporting this vision. The recent demonetization reform by the Government has further laid the ground for setting a cashless economy.” Directi’s Bhavin further adds, “With the increase in cash flow within banks, advanced technological infrastructure will help facilitate seamless transactions and improve the overall banking system as we enter into the new financial year.”

and promoting startups across spheres and spurring indigenous manufacturing through Make in India are the most crucial elements for this. As HDS’ Vivekanand Venugopal points out, “As we advance towards an economy under the Digital India initiative, we are optimistic the upcoming budget will create opportunities keeping innovation in the heart of every policy. To efficiently drive the journey of Digital India, the focus should be to modernize infrastructure as this will boost growth across sectors, especially technology.” Startups across the country are looking for added benefits and support to leverage them further ease of business. This is further supported by Directi’s Bhavin who says, “Steps should also be taken to help startups tide over its immediate effects. A startup hub, India is currently home to the third largest number of technology driven startups in the world. The previous year witnessed multiple markdowns in the country’s startup ecosystem and, therefore, to propel this forward, the PM’s flagship ‘Startup India’ project should receive an impetus in the upcoming budget.” Vinamra Pandiya, CEO of Qtrove.com opines, “As an e commerce start up, we look forward

to receiving some more clarity for FDI in B2C e-commerce through an automatic route. Besides this, we are also expecting relaxation of the rule of ‘not more than 25%’ of the business coming from one vendor for online marketplaces.” Livehealth’s Abhimanyu adds to Vinamra’s comments, “Supportive financial systems and an uncomplicated process in getting clearances along with the provision of tax are some of the key expectations for the startup ecosystem to thrive and boom in the country. We are hopeful that the union budget 2017 will be positive for the entire startup ecosystem.” The government has also being crying out loud to enterprises to manufacture in India, thus keeping the major part of the wealth inside the country. The budget should also dwell on streamlining policies and launching new initiatives supporting the Make in India vision. HP India’s Rajiv Srivastava comments, “While the relaxation of FDI and introduction of several initiatives have helped citizens embrace economic transformation and digitization, additional initiatives to boost domestic manufacturing will also help them adopt technology in its most tangible form. On the business front, IT manufacturers are

bracing themselves for the implementation of the much anticipated Goods and Services Tax (GST).” Rajeev Jain, CFO, Intex Technologies explains, “As an industry, we expect a long-term and stable policy on mobile manufacturing in India. The industry has huge potential and can supplement government initiatives of ‘Make in India’ with highly technical products. Incentives to create sufficient technical manpower will lay the foundation of a strong and robust manufacturing base in India. A clearly laid out research and development policy is necessary to succeed in a highly technical industry and will help bring component manufacturing base in India to save precious foreign exchange.”

ENABLING EMPLOYMENT THROUGH SKILL DEVELOPMENT As the country goes digital, the onus of having a skilled workforce to operate the IT infrastructure comes on the government. Catering a massive population is not an easy job. With digitization automating a number of processes, a number of orthodox jobs will become extinct, or will use relatively less number of people. However, implementing and operating a digital network would need professionals qualified for specific tasks with specific skills needed. The industry expects budget to highlight this aspect with clear, programs, initiatives and incentives. Bhavin Turakhia, Co-Founder and CEO, Directi says, “To adapt to the need of time, government should also rationalize income tax provisions including provisions related to employee tax benefits such that payments/ documents in the digital medium JANUARY 2017

Sanjay Rohatgi, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific and Japan, Symantec believes skilled workforce is crucial, not just to digitize operations across the country, but also safeguarding the digital framework from attacks. He explains, “Alongside investment in infrastructure, we need to focus on developing a world-class and competent work force..” This is seconded by Tenon’s Major Manjit Rajain who expects, “The security industry is the second largest employment generator in India, which provides fresh workforce through facilitating pre-job and on the job training. Considering recent initiatives taken by the current government in the areas of agriculture, job creation, skill development and education, we hope this budget to be beneficial for companies like us.

tions as well a push towards digitization of the economy leading to advancement of IT in the country. Rajiv Srivastava of HP India comments, “With the upcoming Union Budget 2017-18, the Government should look at rolling out initiatives to boost adoption of technology for education, skilling, manufacturing and infrastructure development that are key to India’s growth story. For digital empowerment of citizens, it should look at making technology more affordable and introducing initiatives to encourage PC buying in the country. Government needs to create conducive environment and support eco-system where we have at least one PC per family as a means to accelerate technology proliferation and migration towards a digital economy.” Acer’s Alok Dubey seconds this saying, “We are expecting favorable change in the Income Tax slabs and rates, as customer spending is still anticipated to decline for short term due to demonetization. We also expect the budget to focus on shaping the IT infrastructure and urge the government to provide tax deductions on purchase of PC for consumers as well providing easy short-term loans for retailers for working capital requirement.”

this budget to be beneficial for companies like us.”

Symantec’s Sanjay Rohatgi is hopeful security will be one of the main talking points, “As India digitalizes rapidly, holistic approach to cyber security is a prerequisite to foster and sustain trust of all the stakeholders – consumers, businesses as well as government. Similar to the decision in 1998 to set aside a specific budget for IT, the government should consider setting aside at least 8% of its overall IT budget specifically for cyber security starting with the upcoming budget.” HDS’ Venugopal expects analytics and data management to be big in the budget, “With large scale digital transformation, data is becoming increasingly valuable. It is important to institute industry friendly policies to better manage data through centralized data hubs and drive smarter decision making with help of data analytics. Additionally, corporates and enterprises are expecting a cut in tax rates at various levels to grow more business opportunities in India to allow the Make in India dream come true.” Intex Technologies’ Rajeev Jain expects the indigenous mobile and smartphone industry to get more backing owing to the needed proliferation of smart devices to make the idea of a cashless economy successful, “The entire country is looking forward towards mobile banking which shall create a new user base and fuel the growth in mobile Industry. In the end, to create a truly inclusive digital economy, affordable mobile handset or consumer durable items up to certain value should be given a concessional duty treatment.” Talking about startups, there is an expectation

with regards to tax benefits and incentives driving cashless and online transactions and promoting e-commerce. Directi’s Bhavin says, “To achieve the goal of financial inclusion, the government should rationalize indirect taxes and charges levied with respect to digital payment transactions, and further incentivize companies operating within this space. As a natural corollary to the demonetization process, the time is ripe to increase the tax exemption limit and also the corporate tax limits. Qtrove.com’s Vinamra adds “Entrepreneurs are awaiting the implementation of GST at the earliest to enable cross state logistics with minimum constraints and friction.”

IN ANTICIPATION OF A DIGITAL BUDGET The budget 2017-18 is all set to be one of the most crucial budgets in recent history. Major developments in the last year have induced the need for a revolutionary budget. The government needs to give a further push to business in the country, rejuvenate a disillusioned startup landscape, enable a cashless digital economy and catalyze manufacturing in the country in few of the major implications faced. With GST on the horizon, flawless SOPs and uncomplicated tax policies need of the hour, the Finance Ministry has a full plate. This year’s budget is expected to put India firmly on the path of coast to coast digitization, propel business, and consolidate the economy. With implications like the pressures of demonetization, GST compliance, and cashless transactions, the IT industry expects major announcements that might catalyze the sector. Initiatives like Make in India, Digital India and Startup India are expected to gain further traction as the government tries to revive the economy and consolidate the country’s wealth against reliance on foreign trade and export. The Indian IT industry is nearing maturity and has seen favorable policies in the past couple of years. This trend is expected to continue with this year’s announcements. Players across verticals are hopeful of a business-pro budget. Will the Budget 2017-18 be a mixed bag for the IT sector like last year or will this year’s budget succeed in driving the country to an IT enabled digital, cashless economy, remains to be seen. NVIDIA: AN OPPORTUNITY OF GROWTH

India is growing on a faster pace banking on its infrastructure growth. The country has attracted global technology vendors to partner in its journey by sharing technologies or by investing in developing technologies. NVIDIA is one such company which has realized the potential of the country and therefore has invested to stay relevant.

anta Clara based GPU company NVIDIA has repositioned the company from a mere GPU vendor to a complete platform vendor focusing on four special verticals including Gaming, Professional Visualization, Data Centers and Auto. Shridhar Garge, Head - Strategy, Planning & Programs, NVIDIA says, “These are the four markets that we are deeply involved in on a global scale. Coming to India, our focus is same barring the Auto market. We are very much focused on the driverless cars and driver systems inbuilt cars. This market is not as mature in India as we are seeing globally.” Although the mainstream market has been influenced by the overall economic slowdown, these specialized vertical markets are not; reason being these are niche areas with low volume size. However, the potential of growth in these vertical markets is high. by the end “As a platform company, our go to market users and that is where lies is through the OEMs or through the channel the growth potential of the partners. We are seeing a lot of cloud gaming partners and expand their happening in India. Therefore, we have put in place right infrastructure, which will start business.” working over a period. US is a pilot market, where we launched it first; and we are taking it further to other countries. So, we are seeing a lot of cloud gaming also coming to India from NVIDIA stable,” Shridhar added. “We are also working on certain plan to bring cloud gaming as a service to India.” NVIDIA is the pioneer in bringing the graphic virtualization to the world. NVIDIA has greed platform, which enables the engineers, designers and movie producers to virtualize their current work environment and have their creative people get access to build designs and work on those in any device at any location. Shridhar added, “If I talk about deep learning as a market, we have an entire out of box solution, called DGX, which is a complete production system for any data scientist to work on and simulate them so that they can grow with it.” NVIDIA graphics are always key differentiators. Shridhar expands, “As the company, our drivers are the most stable graphics drivers in the market. That is where our users rely on us. What we are trying to bring is that we are bringing in allied software which keeps the users in the center, so that we can make the job of the user more and more easier.” So, NVIDIA array is their rendering software solution. NVIDIA grid is their graphics virtualization software solutions. These are, basically, the allied solutions that the company offers with NVIDIA hardware solutions. The entire play that NVIDIA has in the market is through the partners. NVIDIA has always been a formidable player as far as the visual computing platform is concerned. And, the company is being looked upon as the pioneer as far as visual computing and any technology that comes into the

market. Shridhar maintained, “Because we are transitioning from an earlier version of having graphic boards, which go into the systems, to more and more end-user based company, partnerships are becoming more critical to our success. We are realizing that as a company, the spectrum of the solution that we are bringing in are extremely diverse. So, on the one hand, we work with gamers to buy GForce graphics cards. Secondly there are cafes, which are completely NVIDIA based platforms. Besides we work with enterprise VARs, SIs and partners for higher end solutions.” Therefore, NVIDIA works with various kinds of partners on different business models including service or reselling business model. These partners are covered under its NPN partner programme. NPN stands for NVIDIA Partner Network, which is about creating and nurturing the entire ecosystem of partners. Not only it is about accessing the entire solutions set coming from the portfolio of NVIDIA but also to interact with each other. So, that they work more as a community rather than work in isolation. He added, “Our network of partners works together to inspire and delight the customers with the entire piece of solution that we have. It is a competency based framework. Depending on the competency that the partner has or wants to get into, he can choose the partnership. It allows the partners to be more flexible as well and create that distinction for themselves within the ecosystem.” Under the NPN program, which is of three tiers, currently NVIDIA has 300-400 partners. Out of which the company is working with 35 40 odd partners with whom the company works very closely.

FINALLY… There are two ways to grow with NVIDIA. The company is at a critical juncture. Shridhar conclud-ed, “Each of the market that we address is a multi -billion-dollar opportunity. Hence, when a part-ner comes on board in the NPN program, he can look at two vectors of growth. The first vector of growth is organic, whereas whatever he is doing today vs the scenario that is lying with NVIDIA, he can keep pursuing those opportunities and grow further. In addition, NVIDIA equips them and promotes them to get into other markets and other products, which is the inorganic or additional growth opportunity. Here they can get into new markets and new products. As a strategy, we are going to bring in more and more complete products from the NVIDIA stable, which will be used by the end users and that is where lies the growth potential of the partners and expand their business. “As with the EU GDPR penalties, 4% of the global revenue is enough to get the

CHANGING FACE OF ENTERPRISE SECURITY 30 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD

JANUARY 2017

SKYBOX // INTERVIEW

With regulatory environments getting tighter around the globe and cybersecurity becoming a key agenda in boardrooms, Skybox Security’s Product Marketing Director Kevin Flynn talks about the changing enterprise security landscape.

What are the cyber security trends do you foresee gaining momentum globally? To start with, the regulatory environment is not just becoming stricter; it now has teeth to it. The European Union GDPR is a proper example of that. Likewise, there are a new set of regulations on privacy and data security in New York, where much of the Wall Street. The main difference is that they are now having very comprehensive approaches with penalties. As with the EU GDPR penalties, 4% of the global revenue is enough to get the attention of board. Another thing, the directors of organizations will now have personal liability. Another trend is the notion that all connected devices have an IP address. Not just routers and PCs and smartphones, it’s all the devices, electric utilities and things in factories that manage them. These things have always been isolated but not anymore. Now they have an IP address and can be attacked. The DDoS attack that happened recently where it was video cameras that were part of the botnet brought major enterprises like Netflix and New York Times down. The DDoS attacked the DNS server, which was an interesting way to approach the problem. They were not attacking NY Times or Netflix, they were attacking the DNS third party using non IP devices i.e. video cameras where there was no password protection. The password was in the firmware. In firmware, the administrator cannot change the password. Moreover, no one updates the firmware. Organizations need to think of the same problem with all their IoT devices. They are vulnerable. The DDoS attack using non IP devices highlighted the danger organizations face. What are some of the challenges that enterprise are facing today with regards to cyber security? The bigger problem that enterprises have been dealing with is how to educate the users. They need to increase user awareness. If we take a look at phishing attacks or spear phishing attacks, major form vector for an attack, a lot of times if the user is aware, he or she might not click on something fishy. But user awareness can only go so far. Education is very important but the enforce-

ment and policies have to vary depending on the culture of the organization. So, what a user in a bank or a user in a defense agency will tolerate as far as control of information flow will be very different than a user in a university. It is important to educate the users because a lot of cyber breaches occur by outsmarting the users. From the IT perspective, education is good but it has to take into account the culture. Also, there has been a lag in what the security vendors are able to do versus the customer’s ability to incorporate the technology. In essence, it is like a three legged arms race between the bad guys, the security vendors and the customers. The vendors and the bad guys are into security 24x7 and develop technologies whereas the customers have another business to do. So there is always going to be a lag time. The bad guys are always adjusting their game, the vendors are always crafting new technologies and then the customers have to absorb them and that takes time. How significant is collaboration to ensuring enterprise security and data protection? Security has to respond to business pressure. The secret to good security is to get out of the way as much as possible and let the business operate smoothly. Collaboration needs to occur between two businesses, or two users and enterprises need to foster that. Security has to adjust to that. You cannot say to the CIO or CEO that you cannot trade with a specific partner. The trick on the collaboration side is to form good policies so that information flows appropriate and then enforce those policies and changes to those policies as necessary. It has to adapt to need for collaboration between two different entities, and then be able to help set the policy, and be able to enforce those policies. The problem comes in detail – What’s a good policy and how am I enforcing it? How different is the enterprise security landscape in India when compared to the west? The problems of large enterprises are very similar in India as anywhere in Europe or US. There is an endemic around the world with a dearth of security people and expertise. The problem of recruiting security talent is hard and I am sure it

is even more difficult in India. To alleviate that is the simplification of the management tools. If you can simplify the management tools, you’ll need less people. How has cloud influenced the approach to cyber protection? Almost everything we use in offices today is cloud. Salesforce is a cloud. If I am using my personal email, that is a cloud. Office 365 is a cloud. Things are no longer sitting in servers in the basement. So there is a major part of the information that is on cloud. It complicates things, because now you need much more control over the flow of information back and forth. What is the information that is going back and forth? How am I encrypting it? How am I protecting it? How am I isolating it so that it stays in the European Union? Do I have policy control on the third platform like AWS? What is happening in my private cloud in my data center? These are some of the questions organizations need to ask themselves. Banking and financial Institutions have been major targets for hackers in recent times. Where are they lacking in their security? In my experience, the larger banks have the budget, resources and the personnel to do a pretty good job. But when you get below that, security is not as robust. Although that is natural in light of company size but the problem in the banking industry is that the information that even a small midsized bank holds is extremely valuable. Unlike manufacturing or any other industry, the security that a large, midsized or a small bank needs is virtually the same. The Bangladesh incident is a good example of this. The swift network that all the banks use to transact and share information connects every bank globally. So as they are part of the same system, the same kind of security needs to exist in them. For mid-sized banks, you need to have the budget and the personnel as the problem is the same. Anything you would like to add? Security has gone on a worldwide basis from a technical issue to a business issue. It has attracted the attention of the board and senior management because they need to be aware of it and also because of the regulatory environment. EU GDPR will be extremely important for companies that have employees who are European citizens or if they do business in EU. The penalties for that are severe, all of a sudden, putting security issue out and into the board room. Companies are adapting to that and there has been a significant shift in the last few years due to the awareness and the change in the regulatory environment. JANUARY 2017

DATA CENTER TRANSFORMATION HARNESSED BY INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) DISRUPTIONS

T

he PROFILERATION of connected machines, devices, and things is rapidly transforming the way businesses extract value from data. A growing interconnection of the physical world with computer-based platforms— known as the Internet of Things (IoT)—is producing massive data volumes that contain real-time insight, which can help organizations adopt new business models, streamline operational processes, and create more innovative products and services – but it arrives with the opportunity cost of overhauling your new age Data Centers.

CHANGES AND CHALLENGES OF THE MODERN DATA CENTER By 2020, the number of internet-connected devices are expected to grow between 26 billion and 50 billion. The Internet of Things (IoT) has a potential transformational effect on the data center market, its customers, technology providers, technologies, and sales and marketing models, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner estimates that the IoT will include 26 billion units installed by 32 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD

JANUARY 2017

2020, and by that time, IoT product and service suppliers will generate incremental revenue exceeding $300 billion, mostly in services. Processing large quantities of IoT data in real time will increase as a proportion of workloads of data centers, leaving providers facing new security, capacity and analytics challenges. The IoT connects remote assets and provides a data stream between the asset and centralized management systems. Those assets can then be integrated into new and existing organizational processes to provide information on status, location, functionality, and so on. Real-time information enables more accurate understanding of status, and it enhances utilization and productivity through optimized usage and more accurate decision support. Business and data analytics give insights into the business requirements data feed from the IoT environment and will help predict the fluctuations of IoT-enriched data and information. The enormous number of devices, coupled with the sheer volume, velocity and structure of IoT data, creates challenges, particularly in the areas of security, data, storage management,

servers and the data center network, as real-time business processes are at stake. The sheer volume of data created by the IoT—from devices in your home to city infrastructure—will have an unfathomable impact on the networking systems used today, and managing them will be equally challenging. All the traffic these connected devices generate now shares the same networks as desktops, tablets, and smartphones—all of which use social media, email, apps, download content, and so on. Complete transformation of the data center can only be achieved when the infrastructure fosters cooperation between server, network and storage assets, relies on a single platform for all data and delivers application transparency so that it can be synchronized with business objectives. When it comes to understanding how to serve each customer more cost-effectively, through Data Center Optimization, CIOs need to analyze more data faster and answer these questions: l How do I store and manage that much data at scale? l How do I store and manage non-traditional data sources like social media, clickstreams,

machine and sensor data, video, etc.? l How do I scale processing to analyze that much data? Thinking a bit differently about technologies like storage and compute should provide you with the ability to leverage server-based storage, optimize computing, and intelligently scale your infrastructure. Top 3 Building Blocks for Data Center Transformation As a thinking partners for Hewlett Packard Enterprise – Global Sales and Solution Support communities serving “C-level “executives, we identify following Top 3 building blocks which are revolutionizing the Data Center modernizations across the IT ecosystem: 1. Transformation through Virtualization

While virtualization is a key building block for data center transformation, this enabling technology has also undergone its own transition. Once reserved for test and development, virtualization is now used to enhance the agility of mission critical applications and is the foundation for cloud implementations. Virtualization is entering a new phase, transitioning from consolidation and cost savings to exploiting new opportunities through increased agility and coordination between server and storage virtualization. Firmly a stronghold in the IT industry, virtualization helps organizations to better reclaim, utilize and optimize multivendor, multiplatform assets. The benefits are usually

greater cost efficiency and enhanced performance, availability and manageability across the virtualized infrastructure. 2. Transformation through Automation

As organizations dig deeper for how best to optimize storage assets, improve visibility and simplicity across the IT infrastructure for better data access and delivery, automation arises as a very critical component. Being able to reduce operational risk, achieve business continuity goals and improve data mobility are top priorities in moving closer to that agile data center. What role does automation play in data center transformation? Automation focuses on integrated or built-in software tools that ensure highly automated, reliable, repeatable and scalable processes designed to diminish OPEX associated with manual steps and human interaction. Furthermore, by automating time consuming operations, enterprise IT is able to deploy new applications and business systems into production quicker and with less cost. The at-a-glance benefits of automation across the data center include: l Enables continuous operations while reducing CAPEX wasted on underutilized storage capacity l Increases IT staff productivity while maintaining or improving data access, security and OPEX l Aligns business objectives and the IT infrastructure’s ability to react to those objectives

3. Transformation through Sustainability

With power consumption in the data center doubling every few years just to keep pace with burgeoning storage capacity requirements, the need to control power, cooling and floor space costs has never been greater. And as enterprise IT organizations are being pushed to the limits by data growth, sustainability presents an opportunity to harness it. Sustainable IT refers to efforts that increase the useful life and reduce environmental impacts of IT systems, and in tandem offer cost benefits to the business. At first, sustainability may not seem like a pillar for transforming the data center; however, viewing the data center from a sustainability perspective encourages IT organizations to appraise more than application requirements, performance demands and storage capacity. Sustainability practices look at components, configurations, procedures, power and cooling consumption and availability, where the inefficiencies exist, and where green technologies can solve data center challenges for the long haul.

VALUE TO THE ENTERPRISE Transforming the data center goes hand-inhand with cloud-readiness, by providing the capabilities to secure, scale and provision “on the fly.” Infusing the data center philosophy with sustainable IT practices and greener technologies fosters more centralized management to address problems quicker, reducing downtime and costs.
