CTRLS CONGRATULATES THE CHANGE AGENTS 2018 FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THEIR ORGANIZATION, INDUSTRY AND THE COUNTRY

EDITOR’S  LETTER of how vital the regulation and standardization of an increasingly technology enabled landscape is for the law makers and world economies.

TESTING TIMES FOR INDIAN IT LEADERS As Digital India reaches the age of maturity, Enterprise IT Leadership finds its plate

not just full but deepening the bottom more with each passing disruption. Digitization has finally become a norm undoubted and embraced by businesses and organizations across sectors, the CIO community now bears the brunt of all business impacts. The Board expects the CIOs to not just handle the transformations of traditional and mechanized processes to increasingly automated and digital environment, but contribute way more, helping create new opportunities and enabling technology to become a key disruptor in an increasingly competitive business landscape. CIOs now have the added hat of a business leader and are expected to become the key market differentiators for their organizations with breakthrough ideation and innovation intra-organization. IT and its virtues are being embraced by Private and Public organizations as well as consumers on a mass scale. At the same time, the vices of an increasing digital and connected environment are being scrutinized more and more, not just by business but by countries as well. The passing of the EU GDPR which is perhaps the biggest government watchdog of its kind till date globally, is a solid example

COVER STORY

CHANGE AGENTS 2018 Vol. 3

Coming to the issue at hand, apart from coverage of the global IT movements, the May edition focuses on the second lot of ChangeAgents 2018 Profiling which features Big Names from sectors like BFSI, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Retail and Real Estate. The issue observes what these IT Leaders have been doing, their readiness for future and ideology on the right approach to success from IT initiatives. Further to the ChangeAgents 2018 Vol 2 story, the issue also carries exclusive coverage of recent engagements as the 7 City CIO Dinner Series folded after engaging IT Leadership in the months of March and April. After successful CIO Open Forums in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, the initiative folded for the year with Chennai and Pune success where IT Leaders converge in heavy numbers to discuss and exchange opinions on the transforming role in the current technology landscape. The issue also features interviews from CIOs on their journey and advice to peers. With EU GDPR finally here, we will be taking an in-depth look at the readiness of Indian organizations with insights from the industry and leading CIOs. Further, we will also be covering the current transformation of the Supply Chain industry with Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory projects underway all over India. The issue will also feature the next lot of CIO profiling under the ChangeAgents 2018 banner. CIOs are undoubtedly the Change Makers of today’s progress but at the same time, the brilliant enactment of Newton’s Third Law in the Information Technology World has made sure that CIOs are the key stakeholders, not just with the accolades of success but as the main culprits for loss and penalties related to business information security. Organizations have been readying the compliance framework and the IT Leadership is going through perhaps the most testing times of the Information Age. CIOs need to plan and strategize carefully and at the same time be wary of the fact that they will have to bear the brunt of unexpected business tragedies like data breaches and loss of information.

The profiles will have a brief insight on their IT skills, their credentials, experience in the industry, at the same time highlighting their achievements from recent projects and their philisophy for ensuring success.

With the EU GDPR Deadline of 25th May already passed, businesses worldwide will come under direct radar of the European Union and will be under the scope of punishment in case of future information leaks which also include EU Citizens. We observe and analyze the Indian CIOs’ readiness, the GDPR awareness in organizations and how it is going to impact the market

Microsoft, DJI partnership brings Drones and AI to farmers’ rescue

S/HE SAID IT

By the year 2050, the current world population of 7.6 billion is expected to reach 9.8 billion. Food production will have to increase to keep up with that growth, however, there is limited amount of additional arable land available for farming. In India, current farm yields are lower than world average, and several activities are being taken up to improve farm yields. To enable farmers use technology to improve farm yields, Microsoft and drone maker DJI are partnering to make it easier and more affordable for farmers to quickly get the information related to soil moisture in their fields and any pest infestation, which would help them make crucial decisions related to sowing and pesticides application. DJI’s drones provide real-time generation of aerial images, which are used by Microsoft’s machine learning algorithms on the Azure IoT Edge to create detailed heatmaps. These heatmaps enable farmers with everything, including whether the soil temperature is ripe for seed germination, and on quickly identifying crop stress and disease that may reduce yield. Through this technology, hours and days spent walking or driving on the fields to assess soil situation and to detect problems gets eliminated, and enables farmers to use their resources – water, land, fertilizer – optimally. This will lead to increase in yields, farmers will be able to grow more crops and farm incomes will improve. In India, Microsoft in collaboration with ICRISAT is using technologies like AI, Cloud Machine Learning, satellite images and advanced analytics to empower smallholder farmers to increase their income through higher crop yield and greater price realization.

About The Book The automotive industry can expect to achieve $160bn in productivity gains annually from smart factory adoption from 2023 onwards. The report, Automotive Smart Factories: How Auto Manufacturers can Benefit from the Digital Industrial Revolution demonstrates that the automotive sector has set more aggressive targets for smart factory initiatives compared to other sectors. A global top ten automotive manufacturer can expect to realize

an additional $4.6 billion or a 50% growth in operational profits annually within five years of a full smart factory implementation. The report predicts that the average productivity growth of smart factories within the automotive sector will be 7% as of 2023, while an automaker will break-even within a year of executing the full potential of its smart factories. By the end of 2022, auto manufacturers expect that 24% of their plants will be smart factories.

Looking past today’s headlines, political scientist and cultural observer Darrell M. West argues that society needs to rethink the concept of jobs, reconfigure the social contract, move toward a system of lifetime learning, and develop a new kind of politics that can deal with economic dislocations.

Key Features This book presents a number of proposals to help people deal with the transition from an industrial to a digital economy.

RAINBOW HOSPITAL //  INTERVIEW

What have been some of the highlights of your journey in the IT Industry? My career in the IT Industry started as a Desktop Support Engineer for a Desktop Support and Services company working for the newspaper Dainik Bhaskar. Then in 2002 with Technical Call Centers coming up, I shifted my base to Delhi and joined a company called vCustomer catering to US Customers as Tech Support. Initially I was into printer support for HP Printers before moving to Linksys which was the SOHO division of Cisco. After working for a mere 10-15 days, I was promoted as a Team leader managing a team of 16 people and being solely responsible for handling their technical queries, mentoring and motivating them as well as handling escalations that they were not able to resolve. After three years at vCustomer, I moved to Orange Business Services, a doable network service provider catering to the airlines industry. Orange Business Services was the commercial division of France Telecom with all the airlines running on the Orange’s Network. They had three support centers across the globe in India, Cairo and Rio. I worked as a Team Lead in Network Services and Support taking care of the backbone network of Orange all across the world right from undersea cables and network connectivity to last line of each and every customer Orange had in almost 220 countries. It was there that I jumped into the big boat in terms of my experience leapfrogging from SOHO to ISP level networking. It was a critical learning curve moving from a LAN network to Ultra WAN where we were taking care of the connectivity pipeline across the continents. After working with Orange for a good three years, I got the opportunity of working in a Hospital called Medanta Medicity in Gurgaon who were looking for an Infrastructure Head to manage their mammoth infrastructure for a 1250 bedded facility in the heart of the city. At Medanta, I was the person responsible for designing, procurement, and implementation of the complete IT Infrastructure and also designing their Datacenter, network connectivity, storage requirements and IT Helpdesk Support. Setting up the infrastructure from scratch at Medanta was one of the biggest projects I

have ever undertaken which took around two years to come up and be operational. After that I was pushed to the Application side where I was asked to lead projects related to different applications in the hospital, thus getting my first experience implementing any application. From Infrastructure my role shifted to setting up the complete IT in the new facility at the same time aligning it with the processes and procedures of Medanta. From Medanta, I joined Rainbow Group of Hospitals, where I work in the CIO role leading a team of about 25 people handling 10 units. Being the lead decision maker for the Rainbow Hospitals’ technology landscape, my job is to decide what is the scope of any technology, what all technologies can be adopted to improve patient healthcare and better customer experience, and at the same time looking at how we can use the current technology deployments in order to reduce downtime in between parts of the business. Tell us about your technology partnership with CtrlS Datacenter? My technology partnership with CtrlS started 4 years back. At the time, Rainbow was expanding and we wanted to set up our own datacenter. CtrlS came into the picture and helped us in understanding the requirements of setting up a datacenter and key elements like Security, Uptime and SLA. After discussion that with the Management, it was decided that instead of building our own infrastructure, we will be co-locating with CtrlS, wherein CtrlS will provide the DC facility as well as DR, an area where they had a good expertise. The key deciding factors were CtrlS’ knowledge and experience managing their own Datacenters, easy availability of the required infrastructure for an organization like Rainbow and a readymade setup of Datacenter Managers to manage our infrastructure, leveraged on a pay as you go model. This meant we didn’t need to spend money on setting up the complete datacenter. Over the period of time, this relationship with CtrlS has grown. When we had started this relationship, we had presence in Hyderabad and Vijaywada and after that we have setup facilities in Bengaluru, Delhi and now Chennai

as well. In this journey, CtrlS has helped in understanding the basic infrastructure requirements on the server side of IT enabling us to proactively plan ahead rather than just wait for things to happen. We have also started working with CtrlS on security and data compliance aspect over the last year wherein they have helped us understand the criticalities of cyberattacks and identifying gaps and vulnerabilities in our infrastructure. With their support we have been able to adopt and implement certain solutions which have helped us in mitigating such attacks. What is your expectation from CtrlS Datacenters as a technology partner for your future IT projects? The first and foremost expectation is availability of the infrastructure, which is something we can depend on them for. We are also moving to Cloud infrastructure where with Cloud4C, they can come into the picture. Secondly, CtrlS have the access to the knowledge and the skill set to help us understand the new technologies and how we can implement them and leverage them to meet business goals. What are your thoughts on the criticality of Data Security and Regulatory compliance in the Indian Healthcare Industry? In India, there are a number of regulations governing the clinical side of healthcare like JCI, NABL and NABH but the healthcare industry is very much deregulated from the information technology standpoint. There need to be certain guidelines and standards which any healthcare provider like us has to follow like in western countries like US. Certain protocols and tools do exist, but that are not done to the core but only on a superficial level. Going forward, hospitals and healthcare providers should form a consortium and come up with certain guidelines and then ultimately form a regulator which can regulate both clinical as well as the information and technology part of the industry. We are the custodians of healthcare data of patients and need to ensure that we have the proper ways, means, procedures and technology in place to ensure that the data is secure and available forever. ARUBA, HPE //  INTERVIEW

LAN market in India is expected to grow very fast given the staggering number of SMEs rapidly growing and large enterprises expanding operations across geographies, what is your perception of India market? Which market segment does Aruba pin its hopes to from growth perspective? India is a great market opportunity for enterprises worldwide. The growth potential offered by the market is huge, and enterprises have shown a huge appetite for implementation of new technologies. Being the fastest growing economy in the world, and with government initiatives like Smart Cities campaign, Digital India and Bharat Net, the citizens are being empowered to go digital, and that provides bright prospects for enterprises. We have been working closely with the education, healthcare, hospitality, retail and the IoT sector, and we are looking forward to growing further in these segments. What is your strategy for India? Could you share some target growth figures? India has always been a very important part of Aruba. While India currently contributes a relatively small portion to our global business in terms of sales, it forms a large portion of our global R&D team. However, the businesses in India have been quick to adopt and implement newer technology, and that makes India a huge growth opportunity for us. We are looking at growing in various sectors like hospitality, education, retail, and healthcare in India, and we are working closely with various Governments and Governmental agencies on national projects. We have seen double digit growth in India, and we are looking forward to grow at the same pace. Security concerns and challenges are always associated with any growing nation and India is no exception. What role can companies like Aruba Networks play in safeguarding the industries? Cybersecurity is a vital issue today. Companies are steadily increasing their digital footprint, and consequently, the landscape on which they can face cyberattacks is increasing. Today, attacks have grown in sophistication and size, and companies have to implement a robust security infrastructure. In the past, the focus has been on ‘Front-door security’, wherein companies deployed firewalls and intrusion detection systems to detect foul play and intrusion. However, with the increase in insider threats, companies will have to adopt an inside-out approach.

Aruba’s focus on security which includes securing the users’ connection with the network from multifarious threat vectors can protect the organization and its sensitive data. Aruba’s comprehensive Access Control Policies, coupled with Aruba’s IntroSpect User and Entity Behavior Analytics (UEBA), which uses AI-based machine learning to detect changes in user behavior to enable early detection of attacks, can help companies keep their data and network safe. What according to you are the major CIO challenges from a network and security point of view? The major challenges faced by CIOs today from a network and security perspective are centered on the ability to draw insights about the network and its health and to maintain continuous uptime which is a necessity in today’s world. Maintenance of the network by implementing speedy detection, identification, and solution of problems affecting the network, the implementation of automated solutions to ensure uptime, and the ability to have a comprehensive understanding about user behavior and pattern to analyze and help in early detections of threats, are some of the common challenges for and requirements by CIOs. How is Aruba a better bet for the CIOs while mitigating those challenges? Aruba was founded with the vision of enabling mobility for enterprises of all sizes and across verticals. This comprises of the ability to have highly elastic, stable, and secure networks, and we have been helping enterprises establish this. We recently introduced NetInsight, an AI based analytics and assurance solution for optimizing network performance. NetInsight uses machine learning to continuously monitor the network, deliver insights in the event of anomalies, and then recommends how best to optimize the network for today’s mobile-first employees and workplace-critical IoT devices. From a security point of view, Aruba’s IntroSpect User and Entity Behavior Analytics (UEBA) uses AI-based machine learning to spot changes in user behavior that often indicate inside attacks that have evaded perimeter defenses. IntroSpect allows enterprises to monitor the network and assign risk profiles by using extensive fraud detection techniques. The usage analysis acts as indicators of potential risks of certain users, allowing for better hygiene of the network, and early detection of potential attacks. This coupled with Aruba’s offerings like ClearPass, allow for comprehensive maintenance of the network, and help equip the

CIOs with the right tools to provide secure and stable connectivity. What sort of investments are you making in India in the coming years to reach out to various markets from both – vertical and geography point of view? We have been operating in the Indian market for over 10 years. Most of our business in India mirrors our global business and is enterprise centric. We work closely with enterprises, universities, hotels, schools, hospitals and we are also working with Governments and Governmental agencies in India. Our biggest market is the SMB segment and we consistently on-board about 30 – 40 new customers each quarter from this segment. This is primarily buoyed by the requirement to provide Wi-Fi connectivity across segments, as employees now expect wireless connectivity for all their devices. Additionally, we are investing resources in educating the users and markets. We are driving courses around our technology, delivering certifications and helping in knowledge building at various levels like our customers, our partners etc. We are also building Aruba Centers of Excellence at large educational institutions to educate new audiences. Aruba’s biggest component is its software which is built at our development centers in India. The surge of IoT is also a huge opportunity for us and we are committed to provide the wireless security and stability required for its adoption. As a company that is involved in protecting data and ensuring its safety and privacy, what are your views on the GDPR coming into effect in May 2018? The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union. GDPR is a significant regulation and it will fundamentally change the way we build technology. Data protection is paramount and this regulation will enable higher amounts of data privacy. The implementation of GDPR will force businesses to take a step back and look at how we ensure privacy in the longer run, which affects both companies and its customers. Before it comes into effect in May, it is imperative that we understand the effects of this regulation - we need to understand how a product is designed and its implications before it even goes down to the market. Looking at it from an ethical and a regulatory standpoint, it is the appropriate way to move forward. MAY 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 47

MTR FOODS //  INTERVIEW

LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY FOR BUSINESS NEEDS With a successful IT journey spanning across both the supply and demand side, Venkat Raman, CIO, MTR Foods opens up on the highlights of his IT journey, the lessons learnt, importance of people management and the support of technology partner CtrlS Datacenters in achieving business value out of deployments. Please shed some light on your journey in the IT industry. What are some of the key highlights of your career? What started as a small foray into IT, ended up as a full-fledged career. My journey started as a Systems Administrator and then, basis the opportunities which came my way, I kept on adding skills. The turning point in my career came when I got the opportunity to switch over from IT industry to end-user organization side. While the skills I acquired being a professional in IT industry were useful, this was a paradigm shift from being on the supply side to the demand side. The perspective changed and I had to evaluate the fitment of offerings from software vendors to further the business interests of the organization. As I climbed up the ladder moving across business organizations, the content of my job started evolving into a role which was a mix of technical and resource management. Serving to the needs of the business was prime priority and the focus was on leveraging technology for business. There were multiple business initiatives spanning the entire business chain right from the customer facing sales to backend like manufacturing, HR or even IT. Some of the initiatives were across nations wherein cultural balance too played an important role. While techno-functional insights were gained by working in organizations like Marico, Philips and Aditya Birla, the most important take was establishing the ‘emotional -connect’ with your team. Emotional connect is what enables each member in a family to strive and contribute more than 100% selflessly and if a leader can bring this culture into his team: the cohesiveness of a family, my view is team functions at highest possible efficiency. While it weighs more on the demand side, my career spans both sides of IT and am lucky that my years of learning were spent with some of the finest managers the Industry has. I am a keen

observer and initiate any project with a belief that there is much to learn from everyone you work with be it your superior or a team colleague (subordinate is not the right term anymore I feel as we all are colleagues with a shared purpose). Of all the resources I have learnt through the years, I have come to understand that people are the most important asset. It is well said that ‘a manager is as good as his team’ and everything can be set right if the right people are available. In people, attitude is most important and with the right kind of attitude, skills can be developed but not vice-versa. My exposure to the importance of people management as I moved up the ladder is another important aspect which helped me become a better manager. Another important lesson I learnt is that IT vendors should be considered as partners in our business journey and a sense of mutual appreciation in terms of value-addition should always exists .They are our window to what’s going on beyond the frontiers of our organization and truly serve as an extended arm of the our team. How has the technology partnership with CtrlS supported you in enabling transformations in your organization/s? The technology partnership with CtrlS Datacenters started about 10 years back at a time when we were scouting for a partner who could provide us with ‘DR-as-a -service’. DR as a service was a new concept then and rarely had any organizations offer the services. Ctrl-S took up the challenge and offered the service to us despite the fact that the platform we wanted was not available as a service anywhere. There is no looking back since then and we have enjoyed 10 years of excellent service from CtrlS as an able technology partner. They have helped built the confidence in business heads that Cloud and related technologies

provided as a service is a valid possibility and have taken away the concern around availability. Going by the way technology has impacted our lives in general and businesses in particular, it is necessary that we partner with organizations like CtrlS which are at the forefront of the technological revolution. Expectedly they should also have reached a good level of maturity. CtrlS brings the best-in class technology and people competence and hence in my view such organizations provide the extra edge when it comes to leveraging technology. What are your future expectations from the technology partnership in terms of future projects? When it comes to harnessing the power of technology there are few desirables. One of those is reducing the time to realization of IT initiatives. With faster IT cycles it becomes necessary that the realization times are reduced drastically. Next is the agility factor so the response to changing requirements is very quick, which again stems from the fact that market dynamics drive requirements and warrant lesser or no lead times. Also right resourcing is key to the success of projects and hence partner skills of high order are a must. What is your advice to fellow IT leaders on the right approach to successful deployments in today’s technology landscape? The three key parameters to measure the success of any initiative are quality of deliverable, timelines and budget. While those are the metrics and in that order of priority, it is important to focus also on stakeholder management, right resourcing and creating conducive environment (ensuring support from top management). If these three parameters are taken care of, the outcome will meet the expectations. MAY 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 49
