EDITOR’S LETTER
AN EVENTFUL MONTH FOR IT FRATERNITY ‘With great power comes great responsibility’. In an increasingly digital and connected world,
information and technology have become the newest sources of power. IT is powering nations and empowering citizens to a better future and more enriched lives. As the digital penetrates deeper and deeper into our societies and personal lives with internet, smartphones, cloud, social media, IoT, Chatbots and Sensors, more and more data is being produced with each passing data. More than half of the entire data produced across the globe was done in the last three years, and the sheer volume speaks for itself. This Data is worth more than gold in today’s economy. And it is the responsibility of IT/ITES organizations, and the Governments proliferating digitization among their citizens, to protect this data and be the rightful custodians who realize this responsibility and keep the sanity of the Information Age alive. With data privacy and breaches becoming daily news, India has been consistently on the radar of black hats and cyber criminals. This month’s top grab was the 94 Crore swindled from the Pune-based Cosmos Bank which had no wind of the siege it was under. Money-swindling through hacking isn’t new, but this gets us thinking, is it possible that we see just the tip of the Ice Berg, even in terms of news on hacking and cyber crime? Thefts and breaches that do not involve direct monetization and deal more with leveraging vast quantities of citizen’s private data which gives a sneak into their personal lives, lifestyles choices, preferences and even their thoughts and

private actions is alarmingly scary and seldom are any of such breaches reported or even investigated. If I were to take a wild guess, I think their might not be a single internet user in the country, information about whom is completely safe. We are all under a massive breach landscape that is almost as inevitable and anonymous as the dark matter across the universe. Moving on, another significant event in the Indian IT landscape was the recommendations filed by the Justice Srikrishna Committee in a report titled ‘A Free and Fair Digital Economy - Protecting Privacy, Empowering Indians’. The committee recommends that 2-4% of company’s worldwide turnover or fine between Rs. 5 Crore to Rs. 15 Crore, whichever is higher to be applied in case of the company found not to have been compliant. This comes as a major step towards structuring the information passage and data laws of India where the nemesis of illegal activities will certainly grow with the asset growth in terms of data generation. The report was welcomed by the Industry with open arms and a warm embrace. On the personal front, we at Enterprise IT World too had a month full of events! As we embarked on the 4 City initiative to contribute to reinforcing the security infrastructure for India Inc. through conferences, knowledge sessions and industry recognition involving security experts and thought leaders from government as well as private domain. The Security Symposium series started with Bengaluru before going to Kolkata and New Delhi and will wrap up with Mumbai on the 24th of August. The conferences received critical appreciation from across stakeholders and overwhelming crowds of CIOs, CISOs and Cyber Security leaders across the cities. Another feather in our hat was the inaugural Enterprise IT World Marketing Innovation Conclave which saw Senior CMOs and Marketing Leaders from the IT/ITES Fraternity converge and indulge in discussions on innovation in marketing and shared their views on a common platform. Such initiatives are part of the wider vision at Enterprise IT World not only to involve the IT Fraternity from all the angles but ensure substantial value addition and motivation for the real heroes of Indian IT to keep up their good work and keep contributing to the growth of the nation and its economy.

In 2017 alone, the number of confirmed data breaches globally was staggering. Against this backdrop, it is crucial for business leaders to understand worldwide public sentiment concerning the sharing of information online, and the impact of data and privacy breaches on the company’s bottom line.

NetApp, NVIDIA supercharge Deep Learning with new AI Architecture
NetApp ONTAP AI proven architecture, powered by NVIDIA DGX supercomputers and NetApp AFF A800 cloud-connected all-flash storage to simplify, accelerate, and scale the data pipeline across edge, core and cloud for deep learning deployments and to help customers achieve real business impact with AI. Although many organizations are adopting new AI platforms, tools, and practices, most don’t have enough control over their distributed data stores to ensure that complete, current, and accessible data is available for their AI projects. Success with AI depends on a business’s approach to data. To be effective in today’s AI use cases and future-proof a business for new AI applications, organizations must achieve visibility into and control of their data, from edge to core to cloud. “Organizations everywhere are making significant investments in AI, but they often lack the infrastructure required to optimize their data for AI projects and scale their applications and workflows to create the business impact they expect,” said Octavian Tanase, Senior Vice President, ONTAP, NetApp.

TThe research showed nearly three-quarters of CIOs believe DevOps efforts can often be undermined by the absence of shared data and toolsets, making it extremely difficult for IT teams to obtain a single view of ‘the truth’ The study reveals 73% of organizations say the need for speed in digital innovation is putting the customer experience at risk. On average, organizations release new software updates three times per working hour, as they push to keep up with competitive pressures and soaring consumer expectation. Praveen Mahajan, Regional Director - India at Dynatrace said, “With technological advancements happening on rapid pace, it’s difficult for organizations to choose the best solution/software aligned with latest technology. Companies across the globe look for the solutions where they need not to compromise between faster innovation and the intelligence. India is no different! Today, Indian CIOs are adopting solutions which assure that the addition of a new feature/ update won’t compromise with the user experience.” The CIO report looks at the pains organizations face as they strive for new heights of agility and speed. Key findings include: CIOs struggle in Cloud •Ensuring software performance isn’t negatively mpacted (67%) •Identifying if moving an application to the cloud has delivered the desired benefits (57%) •Understanding if an application is well-suited to the cloud (55%) •Re-architecting legacy applications for the cloud (51%) •Ensuring the user-experience isn’t impacted during the migration process (48%)

Huawei and Audi sign MoU for Strategic Cooperation
Huawei gained a strong partner for the development of intelligent connected vehicles signing a MoU for a strategic cooperation with Audi, the German automobile manufacturer, today. The agreement forms part of a broad-based partnership between the companies in the two countries initiated by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The cooperation between Huawei and Audi is also intended to facilitate the ongoing advancement of intelligent
driving and the digitalization of services in the vehicle environment. To this end, the parties have additionally agreed to jointly develop training programs in order to strengthen the skills of technology experts in both of these areas. Intelligent connected vehicles allow relevant information to be exchanged between the vehicle and the surrounding environment. To achieve this, cars need a high-quality, stable data connection. The expansion of this communication requires intensive research and development.
Salesforce announced the next generation of Service Cloud Einstein, combining the world’s #1 CRM with guided processes and powerful artificial intelligence to transform the customer service experience. Companies can now leverage Einstein Bots for Service to automate routine service requests and enable frictionless agent handoffs. Lightning Flow for Service empowers businesses with tools to quickly design and automate customer engagement processes. And Einstein Next Best Action empowers agents by delivering intelligent recommendations and offers for customers. The Rising Tide of Customer Expectations Today, 80 percent of customers say the experience a company provides is as important as its products, yet many customer service organizations are unable to rise to the challenge. Too often data exists in silos across an organization, preventing service agents from having a complete view of the customer.

INDIA NEEDS A HYPERSCALE INFRASTRUCTURE With over 460 million internet users, India is the second largest online market in the world. Ably supported by a futuristic government with favorable policies and a country-wide digital revolution, India is on the cusp of unprecedented data explosion which will not only test the country’s current storage infrastructure but demand much more The answer is Hyperscale Infrastructure.
SRIDHAR PINNAPUREDDY FOUNDER AND CEO, CLOUD4C AND CTRLS.
“Today, the infrastructure in India consists of state of the art Tier 3 and Tier 4 datacenter facilities that boast traditionally 8-10+ MW power capacities. The current infrastructure is likely to fall short in the face of the anticipated exponential growth of data data that the country is
expected to encounter. India needs a Hyperscale data center infrastructure.”
A
billion strong customer base with an open mindset, a flexible government with favorable policies and a country-wide digital revolution. India today is at the Center of all future hopes of the world economy. A land of opportunities for the big corporations with massive scope for digitization and technology enablement, India has almost suddenly exploded on the world internet map. With over 460 million internet users, India is the second largest online market, ranked only behind China. By 2021, there will be about 635.8 million 38 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD AUGUST 2018
internet users in India. These numbers are not just mind-boggling but unprecedented anywhere in the world. Indians today dominate the world internet (the one with no communal barriers and repressive governments), be it the traffic on social networks, audience for online media consumption and the biggest e-Commerce customer base in the world, contributing to majority revenue shares for leading Silicon Valley giants. Sridhar Pinnapureddy, Founder and CEO of CtrlS Datacenters, Asia’s Largest Tier-4 Datacenter and Managed Service Provider opines, “India is a market the no global business can ignore today, be it an ecommerce player, technology services (or)
any product company. The technology infrastructure in India combined with the anticipated data privacy law will surely mandate financial services, ecommerce, services players to host their applications in India requiring large storage capacities to address the foreseeable demand”. The internet explosion in India combined with IOT deployment, cloud adoption by businesses large and small alike the storage requirements will keep getting bigger and bigger. It is reported that 90% of world’s data was generated in the last twenty four to thirty six months and it would continue to grow in future times to come. This is truly the next wave of development for India
ADVERTORIAL
with a certain promise to list the entire country from its struggle of third world development and put India at par with the global first world superpowers. This entire massive revolution is powered by Data, which is undoubtedly the new oil in world economy, and India today is like a volcano of data exploding rapidly. This creates a massive gap which needs to be fulfilled in terms of storage demands to cater to the exponential growth which is expected. Let’s take a look at the factors driving this growth and what will lead to the future explosion.
THE SOCIALLY EMPOWERED MASSIVE ONLINE INDUSTRY India has been at the forefront of the global social media revolution, voicing opinions and showcasing their talents. People of all ages have absorbed Social Media into their lives, right from the teens to the old, with a dominant footprint across social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and YouTube. Sridhar continues, “In the last five to ten years the data growth has been moving upward slowly and steadily. From just being a pure internet user to using mobile phones, to smart phones with cameras; then going onto then going on social media sites and posting all kinds photographs and videos from end-user perspective, however from a business perspective growth in ecommerce, mobile payments, online banking, online financial transactions (stocks, insurance, etc), e-governance (online tax filing, online railway ticket booking etc) have led to data explosion in India, requiring huge storage capacities to accommodate them”. The internet has been embraced by an estimated 460 million internet users in India and a huge share of bandwidth and network traffic goes to ecommerce websites (big and small) being delivered across the length and breadth of the country. India is a very potent market with a young population and a growing customer base, resulting in a favorable playing field for international companies.
SMART CITIES, IOTS AND SENSORS Growing wireless connectivity has spurred Smart devices and internet of things across all walks of life. Sensors are being deployed and leveraged to capture all kinds of information and then process it in real time. Automotive manufacturers have been experimenting with sensors for autonomous driving, traffic advisory and even anti-theft mechanisms. Going by the numbers, India sells over 5 million vehicles a year. “Adding sensors will not just fuel a significant amount of revenue but it will witness data captured from millions of cars
every second, explains Sridhar, “Due to compliances and regulations this data has to be stored for a minimum of 3 years. This will result in a million such pings happening every microsecond, and all this needs to be recorded and stored somewhere. This kind of data demands a storage revolution. Not just cars, sensors and IoT use cases have been growing rapidly from Smart appliances, personal assistants, to niche products like pet sensors. In the services industry, sensors have opened a whole new box of opportunities. Residential sensors are used in apartment buildings and homes to solve various issues from water works and sanitation to electricity distribution, parking and identification facilities. Neeraj Vetkar, Head IT, DMart Group who has been an Industry veteran too concurs, “India will have 2 million IoT devices deployed across the country. Business Analytics, AI, social media, VR and AR in addition to IoT will result in rapid growth of data. The only way such data can be managed is not through inhouse infrastructure but through large data center facilities who have the ability to scale on demand, provide highest uptime to keep the business operational seamlessly”. The mantle for technology success lies with the role of the Government. The current government led by NDA under the able leadership of Shri. Narendra Modi has been driving the digitization and technology enablement of the common man. Favorable government outlook goes a long way in giving the right backing and support to ensure success in such large scale projects. The recent push towards Digital India and the Smart Cities platform has opened up numerous new use cases which will gather vast amounts of Citizen Big Data and convert it into meaningful utilization. Managing and synchronizing this data needs a revamp of the storage infrastructure in the country and data centers at scale to keep up with the growing demands of the country.
THE GOVERNMENT PUSH TOWARDS CITIZEN DATA PRIVACY With EU GDPR now in strict enforcement, the Indian government has been contemplating on bringing regulations to the Data Privacy landscape in India. The IDPR or the Indian Data Protection Regulation, an equivalent of GDPR in Europe is in the making. One crucial aspect that is expected to come up as part of the Indian regulations is that the Indian law would require organizations to house the data transactions of all Indian citizens and all business transactions to be stored in India. The storage demand that is expected to be created by this regulation will be exponential. Indian citizens today make up for a substantial chunk of data for Internet giants
like WhatsApp , Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube etc. Over half of the world’s Facebook subscribers are Indians, and same is true for a number of other western IT giants. Till now all of that data was stored in the US but once the regulations are out, they would have no option but to house the data collected here in our Indian Data Centers. This will create a massive demand for storage undoubtedly. IoT, Connect buildings, machines, cars and everything else too will trigger growth of data storage.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR INDIA’S STORAGE INFRASTRUCTURE AND THE WAY FORWARD With all these driving factors, India is set for generating unparalleled sums of data and will require extensive storage capabilities. Sridhar Pinnapureddy sums up the solution in a simple yet powerful sentence, “India needs a Hyperscale data center infrastructure.” Today, India’s current Data Center infrastructure is at par with the global standards, and in some capabilities even supersedes the infrastructure in US and Europe. Sridhar continues, “The Indian Data Centers are far better than their counterparts overseas. They are built to last and resist numerous technology deterrents like the Indian heat, the uncontrolled pollution, unforeseen power cuts, menacing earthquakes, and massive floods. We work in a far more challenged environment. While in India the resources are in abundance, there co-exist issues as well. However, we need to be ready to address the humungous amount of data likely to be produced due to privacy legislation as shared earlier”. “Today’ the infrastructure in India consists of state of the art Tier 3 and Tier 4 datacenter facilities that boast traditionally 8-10+ MW power capacities. The current infrastructure is likely to fall short in the face of the anticipated exponential growth of data that the country is expected to encounter,” Sridhar continues, “This is where we at CtrlS are planning a new 100 MW hyperscale datacenter facility spread across a million square feet.” Future technologies are making entries in diverse use cases across verticals. Future transactions are going to be large, huge, and complex. Businesses are in the midst of exploring technologies like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality for 360 degree experiences to showcase products and better efficiency in sectors like Real Estate, Entertainment, Healthcare and Manufacturing. The demand for Hyperscale datacenter Infrastructure in India is destined to grow exponentially in the country and India’s Data Center Man Sridhar and his forces at CtrlS Datacenter have big plans of leading the Hyperscale revolution from the front. The report has been welcomed by the industry as a big step towards bringing governance in data handling by the companies operating out of India
A
fter the EU GDPR came into effect and enforced strict penalties on data breaches for businesses with interest in the Continent, it was now India’s turn to bring forward its own set of compliance regulations which would ensure the privacy and safety of citizen data. To this end a specialized committee was formed, headed by Supreme Court veteran Justice BN Srikrishna. The Justice Srikrishna Committee’s report entitled – ‘A Free and Fair Digital Economy - Protecting Privacy, Empowering Indians’ along with a draft of The Personal Data Protection Bill 2018 was finalized and presented to the government. The committee’s report deliberated upon many aspects 40 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD AUGUST 2018
of data travel while creating its recommendations. The report has mandated penalties for violations, criminal proceedings, setting up of a data authority, provision of withdrawal of consent and concept of consent fatigue. Justice Srikrishna said data privacy is a burning issue and there are three parts to the triangle. “The citizen’s rights have to be protected, the responsibilities of the states have to be defined but the data protection can’t be at the cost of trade and industry.” Some of the key recommendations by Justice Srikrishna committee include, all organizations should appoint data protection officers, they will also act as point of contact for individual grievances, personal data should be processed only for clear and specific purpose, individuals should have rights to withdraw their consent, firms will
have to ensure to have one copy in personal data in India, critical data shall only be processed in a server or data center located in India. Similarly, on the lines of GDPR, the committee has also recommended in terms of penalties. The committee recommends that 2-4% of company’s worldwide turnover or fine between Rs. 5 Crore to Rs. 15 Crore, whichever is higher to be applied in case of the company found not to have compliant. However, the committee has given some exceptions to the journalistic purpose or for purely personal and domestic purpose. The committee also recommended that a data protection fund and a data protection awareness fund to be created through proceeds from penalties and fines. The recommendations of the Committee have had a more or less positive response from other

key stakeholders in the country, both public and private; at the same time getting a warm reception from the industry. NASSCOM-DSCI in a joint statement said, “The Personal Data Protection Bill released by the Justice Srikrishna committee has suggested a much-needed framework for data protection and privacy in the country. The Bill builds on the Supreme Court’s judgment that advocated privacy as a fundamental right for the country and creates a framework for all stakeholders to be more responsible and build trust while dealing with personal data. NASSCOM and DSCI welcome the thrust on creating an institutional structure through a Data Protection Authority in the country as well as the importance of Privacy by Design.” NASSCOM-DSCI has been advocating for a healthy balance between privacy and innovation, as India today emerges as a preferred hub for innovation and STEM talent globally. Policies that govern data protection, storage and classification need to be carefully crafted given the global footprint of the IT-BPM sector. Service Providers in India process financial, healthcare and other data of citizens globally. India is also the destination for R&D, Product Development and Analytics, Shared Services. Mandating localization of all personal data as proposed in the bill is likely to become a trade barrier in the key markets. Startups from India that are going global may not be able to leverage global cloud platforms and will face similar barriers as they expand in new markets.

Ramesh Mamgain, Area Vice President, India and SAARC Region, Commvault, said, “The report released by Justice BN Srikrishnaled committee for the data protection law is a welcome step. The committee’s recommendation for setting up a Data Protection Authority (DPA) which will be responsible for monitoring, enforcement, standard setting, awareness creation and grievance handling is a reflection of a comprehensive approach towards data management in India. With several instances of data leaks on both individual as well as organizational level that have taken place in the past had created an alarming situation across the country. With the regulation taking form, citizens of the country can now be assured of the safety of their sensitive data. Similar to EU’s GDPR, the Data Protection Law in India is a much needed regulation which will institutionalize processes for organizations across all sectors to better manage both primary and

secondary data.” As per Vidur Gupta, Partner, Government and Public sector, EY India: “The data protection report of the committee led by Justice Srikrishna, will be a key step towards building the important base of ‘trusted’ digital India. The proposed introduction of a Digital Protection Authority (DPA) as an independent regulatory body with wider powers would be quite beneficial in the enforcement of the data protection law. Further, the recommendation of bringing public entities under the gambit of law would not only strengthen the confidence of citizens but also define specific safety measures for their personal data while using eGovernance services.” “It is now imperative that recommendations of the Committee be critically examined and potential direct and indirect costs and benefits be identified and analyzed to help policymakers in decision making”, noted Pradeep S
Mehta, Secretary General, CUTS International. The members of the commit included, Telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan, UID CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey, National Cyber Security coordinator Gulshan Rai and Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy Research Director Arghya Sengupta along with Gopalakrishnan S, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT. The other members of the committee include Ajay Kumar, Additional Secretary, MeitY, and Rama Vedashree, CEO of Data Security Council of India. Srinivas Rao, Co-Founder and CEO, Aujas said, “As India leapfrogs into a digital revolution, the importance of data protection policies becomes pertinent and the recommendations of the Srikrishna panel will go a long way in establishing the same. The activity of data storage is similar to the duties of a bank in which data must be consensually given, and the storage of the same must be secure beyond all doubt. Given that India is among the largest producers of data in the world, it is imperative that we have comprehensive legislation in place, to monitor what enterprises and governments do with this data. The panel’s suggestions go further to reiterate the point that once retrieved, secure storage of this data must be guaranteed to the consumer. As the consumer is a key stakeholder in the Digital India campaign, these rulings serve to instill confidence and faith in the movement, and embrace the digital dream.” Nikhil Bedi, Partner, Deloitte India said, “Robust security systems and incidence response capabilities are imperative for all companies and financial institutions that are custodians of customer data and customer assets including funds. While there is growing awareness to regularly update an organization’s cyber preparedness and defense mechanisms; a large number of institutions wake up to this reality only post an incident which often leads to a loss of reputation and/or financial misappropriation”.
THE WAY FORWARD… With the Committee’s recommendations now in the open and embraced by the industry, it is now in the hands of the Government of India as to how would they take it forward in both the houses and pass the bill before creating a law. Of course, it will take some time beyond the monsoon session of the parliament and with the political structure of the country, it might not even get materialized then, but what is certain is that the Indian Digital Economy will have a proper structure and strict security and privacy guidelines in the near future. Not just crucial for the rise of India as a global digital force, but for maintaining the integrity of a nation striving to uphold the right to privacy for its citizens. LEARNING FROM EUROPE’S DIGITAL REVOLUTION OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY Rapid adoption and implementation of Industry 4.0 in the European Auto Industry has resulted in emergence of new value chains, new policy regulations, a shift in consumer attitudes and a rapid change in technology experienced in the industry. Indian CIOs can learn a lot from this and inculcate the trends in the auto sector in the country.
T
he European auto digital revolution has set a new trend in the automobile industry all throughout the world. There is an emergence of new value chains, new policy regulations, a shift in consumer attitudes and a rapid change in technology experienced in the European auto industry. This 44 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD AUGUST 2018
has been possible due to the rapid adoption and implementation of Industry 4.0 in the European Auto Industry which has contributed to the following important trends in the sector..
EUROPE’S TOP DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION TRENDS IN AUTOMOBILES
“Digital” Car Purchases: Unlike the olden days, consumers nowadays research a vehicle thoroughly on websites like TrueCar and Edmunds before entering a car showroom. Such websites provide all the information for drawing a decision at the click of a mouse. Next, a lot of car showrooms in Europe have implemented virtual reality to showcase the available car models rather

than stuffing real vehicles into the showroom. Virtual reality enables prospective buyers to feel a vehicle in all aspects with capabilities of opening the car door, a 360° panoramic explorative view of the car internal features, hear authentic engine and muffler sounds. Autonomous Driving: Cars are driving by themselves– thanks to GPS, sensors, cameras, advanced circuitry and other tracking devices that have made driverless cars a reality. The objective of autonomous driving is to decrease accidents and fatalities. This is a boon for physically challenged individuals apart from the normal people. Networked Supply Chain: Digital transformation is known to customise a consumer’s experience about a product or service. A well networked and digital supply chain has an impact on reducing significant costs and engaging the customer in a better way by collecting important statistics and data to ensure consumer loyalty. Predictive Maintenance: Vehicles used advanced self-diagnostic systems which alert the driver in advance of an oncoming failure. This leads to proactive check-ups and servicing of the vehicle that prevents future mechanical failures and fatal accidents. Security: Since today’s advanced automobiles collect a lot of data related to its drivers, destinations, geography, climate etc., it is imperative that this data be kept secure and free from hackers. The European auto industry is constantly innovating and researching to keep data privacy at the highest level.
automobile sector, the Indian automakers are forced to reconsider their future business strategies and how they can make the best use of new concepts and technologies in the overseas markets. For the Indian auto industry to scale new heights as seen in the European auto sector, auto manufacturers in India need to change their mindset from a product-based business model to a service-oriented one. For disruption to take place in the auto industry, the customer has to be placed as the nucleus of the industry which warrants a service-based approach. Secondly, an India-first approach is the need of the hour. Traditionally, Indian auto manufacturers have been importing the latest technology for manufacturing their vehicle models for overseas markets. Then they would align these technologies to the Indian markets. To achieve economies of scale, this process has to be reversed. Thirdly, Indian auto giants should share technology with each other by way of a productive collaboration rather than intensifying business rivalries, in the interest of the country. Such collaboration can be extended to IT companies as well. This will lead to sharing of heavy investment on technological innovation to match European auto standards. Lastly, the Indian auto manufacturers should think big. By that, they need to look forward to creating a disruptive product and not spend economically on innovating technologies which don’t have a wide impact.
WHAT SHOULD INDIAN MANUFACTURERS LEARN FROM THIS?
HOW SHOULD THE CIO CONTRIBUTE?
With concepts like self-driving cars and shared mobility gaining a strong foothold in the global
At this moment, there is a dearth of good resources in the Indian auto industry with a technological background. CIOs must focus on
getting the right talent of human resources in the organisation. A key area that needs immediate attention is software development. It is imperative to have the best resources from the software industry for the organisation to help create better, advanced vehicle designs and providing solutions at an economical cost. This would consequently lead to higher profits or lesser time to break even in case of heavy investment in technology. In order to achieve this, CIOs must collaborate with professional recruitment agencies to source the right talent for the organisation. They should also identify training and upgrade needs of existing employees through professional mentorship and guidance. Apart from this, CIOs should also identify high performing individuals from different departments of the organisation like IT, business analysis, research, etc. Innovation laboratories can be setup for creating and assigning small, short projects involving new technologies to deserving internal employees to increase their exposure. To hop onto the digital bandwagon, Indian auto industries need to allocate separate, big budgets for technology which will encompass categories like ERP, automation, manufacturing executed systems (MES), cybersecurity, IoT and business intelligence. CIOs need to pick up in the most important and relevant technology from the above list to bring about the required level of efficiency and capability in their manufacturing process. They also need to work closely with product design and development teams to discuss the security aspects of the automobile. This is especially important for an auto manufacturer who wants to manufacture a highly connected vehicle using cloud technology which is prone to attacks. A Digital revolution leads to the enormous amount of data being generated at various points. This requires careful data storage and management for analytical reasons in the future. For security reasons, this data is stored in organisation-owned data centres. But this can be costly as data will keep rising in gigantic numbers over the years.CIO should be investing more in cloud storage and to some extent in own data centres. A lot of third-party service providers in India offer data centre services at affordable rates. Digitalization is a long journey and can be mindboggling. CIOs should set small milestones to achieve the objectives in phases and win support from employees and top management. Bigger milestones should come later with increased confidence and participation from all business units. The CIO must act as a strategic enabler for all aspects of the business. CISO SPEAKS // GENPACT
IS IT SAFE TO USE CELL PHONES TO GET OTPS? SS7 can be intercepted by hackers or leveraged by surveillance and therefore can lead to fraud or malicious attacks. There is very little you can do to protect yourself beyond not using the services except 2FA that acts as the last line of defense against fraud.
“Security experts say that the same SS7 centric hacking techniques used against German banks will become increasingly prevalent in the future, forcing organizations to reconsider how they authenticate user activity.”
ARCHIE JACKSON,
AVP - TECHNOLOGY/INFORMATION SECURITY, GENPACT
What does SS7 do? Signaling System 7 (SS7) is an international telecommunications standard that defines how network elements in a public switched telephone network (PSTN) exchange information over a digital signaling network. Nodes in an SS7 network are called signaling points. SS7 allows phone networks to exchange the information needed for passing calls and text messages between each other and to ensure correct billing. It also allows users on one network to roam on another, such as when travelling in a foreign country. Once hackers have access to the SS7 system they can have access to the same amount of information and snooping capabilities as security services. They can transparently forward calls, giving them the ability to record or listen in to them. They can also read SMS messages sent between phones, and track the location of a phone using the same system that the phone networks use to help keep a constant service available and deliver phone calls, texts and data. Should a hacker gain entry to the SS7 system on any number of networks, or if they are used by a law enforcement agency as part of its surveillance, anyone with a mobile phone could be vulnerable. The risk of surveillance with access to the SS7 system and a phone number: One of the biggest dangers, beyond someone listening to calls and 46 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD AUGUST 2018
reading text messages, is the interception of two-step verification codes that are often used as a security measure when logging into email accounts or other services sent via text message. How to protect snooping via SS7? There is very little you can do to protect yourself beyond not using the services. For text messages, avoiding SMS and instead using encrypted messaging services that allow you to send and receive instant messages without having to go through the SMS network, protecting them from surveillance. Your location could be being tracked at any stage when you have your mobile phone on. The only way to avoid it is to turn off your phone or turn off its connection to the mobile phone network and rely on Wi-Fi instead. Two-factor authentication (also known as 2FA) is a type (subset) of multi-factor authentication. It is a method of confirming users’ claimed identities by using a combination of two different factors: 1) something they know, 2) something they have, or 3) something they are. Two-factor means you as the user have to have a second thing with you to serve as the second factor. Some services offer a physically unique device to serve as the second factor - often something along the lines of an “RSA Token” - a small device about the size of a USB flash drive that displays a number, which changes every
minute or so. Less common is a token the size and shape of a credit card that does the same. But think about the number of important accounts you have: banks, credit card accounts, email accounts, social media accounts. Carrying one “second factor” around might not be a nuisance but carrying a dozen around becomes impractical. What is something almost everyone has though, and has with them at almost all times? A cell phone. Service providers caught onto this a few years ago and began implementing a form of two-factor authentication in which the provider sends a SMS or text message with a typically six-digit code to enter along with your password. Similar to a physical code generator, the SMS code is only useful for about a minute before it changes to something else. More recently, companies have produced Android and iOS authenticator apps that emulate the function of a code generator. Functionally though, they behave the same: they give a onetime-use token that is good for about a minute and must be used along with the password in order to log into an account. The designing flaws in SS7 allows an attacker to divert the SMS containing a one-time pass code (OTP) to their own device, which lets the attacker hijack any service, including Twitter, Facebook or Gmail, that uses SMS to send the secret code to reset account password.

I
n today’s world, Security has become a major concern for everybody. Places of importance/mass gatherings like airports, stations, parks, offices, societies etc. are prime targets for attacks. Securing premises involves thorough checking of individuals and vehicles entering the premise. Traditionally, under vehicle inspection has been done using old age methods like search mirrors and video based scanning systems. Using traditional methods and practices for security inspection has been observed to be cumbersome and error prone often defeating the whole purpose, like search mirrors and video based scanners which fail to cover large portion of area and also take time to perform. Video-based systems are prone to operator distraction and fatigue while trying to interpret simultaneous video playback of multiple partial
vehicle portions. Despite broad awareness among security professionals about the significant drawbacks and ineffectiveness of such scanners, many institutions continue to use them. Use of 3D in inspection systems and comprehensive Entry-Exit control by integration of various security systems and accessories like boom-barriers, bollards, ANPR, X-ray bag scanner, under vehicle scanner, access control system. More recently, composite image based UVSS has been widely deployed in overcoming the drawbacks. These systems produce single view high resolution composite imagery which is easy to investigate for foreign objects. Early editions based on Line-scan camera technology had limitations of near constant speed vehicle motion and could not deal with vehicle stoppage due to queue formation. These were rapidly made obsolete by
better systems based on Area scan mosaic technology, which address practical operating problems faced by earlier systems. Technology has taken giant strides over the last few years, paving way for new innovations in every field. 3D & AI are some of the new technologies which are rapidly driving changes in many security domains like healthcare, architecture, entertainment, manufacturing etc. The field of security is still in the nascent phases of adopting these new technologies. Earlier, most premises used to have independent systems working in isolation, requiring significant co-ordination for seamless operations. Integration of these systems has become a de-facto standard for large and prestigious premises. Apart from ensuring seamless operation and enhanced security, the integration also provides multiple new functionalities, including centralized entryexit reports, common command centre for monitoring all the equipments in synchronous fashion. In conclusion, Security threats can be addressed more effectively by adoption advances technologies and standard industry practices. Nevertheless, security operators many times face maintenance issues post installation thereby rendering ineffective many such new technologies. It is also important therefore, to consider the credentials and track record of the equipment manufacturer- the installed base of the equipment can be a good benchmark for the same. Service network of the OEM should also be considered as one of the crucial deciding factors while choosing any kind of security equipment, an aspect which is often neglected at the time of procurement. INTERVIEW // CITRIX
SD-WAN PERFECT WORK COMPANION FOR A HYBRID ENVIRONMENT While cloud computing has been instrumental in creating a flexible access to data and applications, it also brings with it numerous security concerns. This has made the role of a CIO that much more significant.
“The best way forward for any CIO before a successful SD-WAN deployment would be to fully understand the IT architecture of the enterprise and then analyze how the deployment can be cohesively added to augment its benefits.”
How has cloud computing grown over the years and how has it affected global businesses? During the last few decades, technology adoption and integration has grown at an augmented pace. Today’s new age enterprise is made up of a number of digital solutions that are aiding organizations in their journey toward ‘the future of work’. Cloud computing in particular has quickly carved its place as a handy tool to manage and access data securely even from remote locations. As organizations are slowly maturing in their cloud adoption journey, this tool has grown from being only a part of the overall IT infrastructure to being a key component to gain a competitive business edge. Why has a hybrid IT strategy become the way forward for businesses? In an evolving business landscape, multifaceted technological solutions like cloud have managed to carve a place for themselves. The emergence of digital business services and the need to accelerate business growth have impelled organizations the world over to replace their traditional IT deployments and make the shift toward cloud-based solutions. With security concerns looming over the heads of business and IT leaders alike, hybrid 48 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD AUGUST 2018
cloud set ups with a strong network infrastructure are quickly taking centre stage. A hybrid structure has already become the new normal and will continue to see growth. What are some of the network challenges for organizations making the shift towards hybrid cloud? In a hybrid cloud set up, while one part of the service is run on premise, the other is based at a third-party location with the cloud service provider. This requires data and applications to be managed out of multiple locations, thus bringing up flexibility and security related issues. Therefore, some organizations are uncertain of their traditional network deployment and whether it has the capacity to manage their distributed cloud-based workload. With the shift toward a multi-cloud approach, please elaborate on the importance of a SDWAN solution. We’ve seen steady adoption rates for a multi-cloud approach as it gives enterprises the flexibility to manage their data and workloads on a public/private cloud. However, as outlined earlier, this may bring in security, accessibility and control related issues that cannot be managed by a traditional

WAN. Conversely, SD-WAN is well positioned to flexibly manage cumbersome workloads with an additional layer of security. Most enterprises today heavily rely on an app consumption model and require an intelligent framework that can combat the challenges and prioritize the delivery of the most important applications first. What is your advice to CIOs on successful SDWAN project deployments? The amplified use of new age technologies also creates that many loopholes for external and malicious third parties to infiltrate your system and access sensitive data. CIOs need to keep track of the network requirement of the enterprise at all times to ensure proper implementation. Additionally, SD-WAN’s capability to intelligently prioritize applications and optimize bandwidth can only be fully realized if it is perfectly integrated with WAN optimization devices and components. Therefore, the best way forward before a successful SD-WAN deployment would be to fully access and understand the IT architecture of the enterprise, then analyze how the SD-WAN deployment can be cohesively added to augment its benefits.

BI IS ALL ABOUT VALUE ADDITION TO BUSINESS BI empowered by the vast mines of valuable data has been making inroads into all business high and wide and in the highly volatile and competitive market landscape it is important for CXOs to be able to realize importance of the insights being created and leverage them in the most lucrative ways for their organizations.
“In a market, where everything is changing dynamically, it’s essential to foresee the future and key business decision makers require a bird’s eye view of what is happening within their organization.”
How has BI become a critical market differentiator for businesses today? Before talking about Business Intelligence, we need to talk about Business Consciousness. Different companies were doing business with the domain knowledge, intuitions and consciousness before, without realising the value and importance of Business Intelligence. As a result, in last decade a large number of Fortune500 companies have been dethroned. In a market, where everything is changing dynamically, it’s essential to foresee the future and key business decision makers require a bird’s eye view of what is happening within their organization. Business Intelligence provides us this power. Dashboards can provide the insight required to plan, manage, and identify opportunities. BI or analytics provide the easiest transition from data to information because end-users can see the direct translation of the outputs they desire through data analysis. In addition, the breadth of analytics enables organizations to look at historical trends, customer sentiment analysis, or project activities into the future through predictive
modelling. In today’s market, BI is not just critical but a necessity. Market is now not only inclined to BI but BA. Every company, be it a service based or product based, wants to see business insights in order to exist in competitive market and to do that BI/BA is the only option. How have SMAC technologies fuelled the surge in enterprise data? Businesses these days are not one dimensional, rather a Multidimensional platform. Evidently, a Multidimensional platform cannot be fed with one-dimensional data. Apart from the data that are generating on a daily basis in-house, there are data, linked with your business but not linked with your database. These data are present in social media platform, Mobile platform (Since, 70% traffic comes from this platform for any online hosted business), and Cloud platform (since, users want to be connected and access the data from everywhere). In order to enable all dimensionalities there have been significant surge in data and opportunities.
JAGADISH RAMAMOORTHI,
CO-FOUNDER AND CEO, ALLSEC TECHNOLOGIES
What are the areas where organizations can extract more value through BI? TBI is all about value addition to the business. The areas in which BI can help organizations extract maximum value include the following Strategic Planning, Sales and Revenue, Finance, Employee Performance and Customer Service. We are using SSRS for all static reporting and SAP BO for Dashboards and BI reporting. For predictive analytics and different ML studies, we are planning to use R, Python and Power BI in the future. How can businesses reap the benefits of BI and Analytics moving forward? There is plenty of scope irrespective of the business domain. As explained earlier by using BI, businesses can get actionable insights that enable them to set a plan and construct parameters useful for business. For Analytics, the scope is even better; you can divide it into three main sections, namely: Descriptive, you can pitch it into any section and regulate the business likewise. .

50 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD AUGUST 2018
HONEYWELL // INTERVIEW
What are the major challenges faced by the aviation industry that can be overcome by technology? Globally, airlines are facing a volatility in fuel prices which is exacerbated in India by a high tax on aviation turbine fuel. The noticeable effects are a push up on costs, a squeezing of margins and potentially negative effects for passengers, primarily in the form of fare increases. While not all factors are directly within an airlines control, the increasing use of fuel efficiency solutions is one way to combat and reduce the effects of changing fuel prices. Honeywell’s GoDirect Flight, a dedicated set of services and applications offered to improve the safety and efficiency of flight operations, provides real-time information that can be used by pilots, crews and airlines to make better-informed decisions around factors such as flight paths, variable weather conditions and approaches to airports. Our GoDirect Flight Efficiency software is strong example of one of our flight services that takes a strategic approach to managing the impacts of fuel through providing data analysis, reporting, and monitoring tools to help airlines conserve fuel, while reducing costs and environmental impact. Maintenance is another major problem for the aviation industry, which can also be improved through solutions that intelligently apply aircraft data. By using tools that monitor and analyze the data that aircraft generate, airlines are able to better plan their maintenance schedules and reduce the amount of time that an aircraft is out of service, which in turn allows for the conserving of maintenance costs. Outside of aircraft operations, this also improves the passenger experience as airlines are less likely to have to carry out unexpected maintenance, thus reducing delayed and cancelled flights. How is digitization and new technologies like AI and Robotics transforming aviation? As expected, digitization is having a tremendous effect on aviation, across business aircraft and commercial airlines, specifically in the way those groups are operating. The Connected Aircraft is driving a revolution within the aviation industry. We are seeing developments in the use of connectivity and data in regards to real-time weather tracking, flight planning and maintenance. More pilots are using real-time data to avoid harmful weather conditions and guarantee a safer journey.
Flight-planning applications let pilots preview the flight path for take-off and landing to minimize delays and help passengers reach their destinations on time. Additionally, maintainers are seeing how data analysis is leading to more predictive maintenance when identifying mechanical parts that need to be fixed or replaced before an aircraft is grounded, ensuring it’s well maintained and downtime is decreased. Information such as flight charts that the pilot may previously have had on paper is now stored and displayed interactively on an iPad, bringing about the opportunity for this information to be kept as up to date as is possible. In addition, pilots are able to preview 3D visualizations of this data, truly transforming their experience. The Connected Aircraft is evolving aviation both on the ground and in the air with new levels of connectivity, software and services. Where is the Indian aviation sector in terms of technology adoption compared to global counterparts? Regulation has previously prevented the adoption of technologies such as in-flight Wi-Fi, which is widely available across other markets. However, things are changing in India. A recent update by the Department of Telecommunications outlines that Wi-Fi and mobile services will be permitted in flight, falling in line with the rest of the world. These types of developments are accelerating India’s progress towards a standard that is common around the rest of the world and is vital for a domestic aviation industry that is growing at almost 28 per cent a year. While India may be behind in some aspects of aviation, it is a sector that is receiving great commitment from the government with investment of Rs. 1 Lac Crore being promised over the next five years to increase capacity and build new airports. We have seen Indian carriers use such offerings and we expect this adoption trend to grow in the future as more carriers want to reap similar benefits to those airlines that currently deploy these advanced solutions. How is Honeywell’s expertise helping in developing the Indian aerospace infrastructure? Our experiences, both locally in India and across the world, are informing our position, relationships and technologies for the Indian market. As the use of Honeywell products grows in terms of the number carriers adopting solutions and the number fleets ultimately fitted with them, the role
that Honeywell plays in developing national aerospace infrastructure will rise with it. We have the ability to offer airlines and business jet operators a comprehensive range of products for everything from small passenger jets right up to jumbo aircraft. Over the years, Jet Airways, Air India and IndiGo have adopted Honeywell technologies and services, and we are consistently working with Indian partners to grow and develop within the market while also contributing positively to the local aerospace infrastructure. How do you see emerging and future technology transforming the aviation market in India? As India grows to become the third largest aviation market by 2025, per the International Air Transport Association, behind only China and the United States, it is undoubted that technology will have a large part to play. If we look at the example of The Connected Aircraft, being able to use the vast amount of data that a single flight generates can contribute great benefits. This allows operators to look at areas that have previously been out of bounds or those that they have had too little information to act on, giving them the ability to make products more dependable, maintenance more foreseeable, and flight even safer and more efficient. A major challenge for the industry will be the way that it handles the aviation experience for the ever growing number of passengers. Jayant Sinha, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Technological Developments, announced growth in the domestic market to 200 million passengers, doubling over the past four years. This growth will see the operators increasing efficiency for the whole flying experience, from the check-in to a reduction in delayed or cancelled flights to an in-flight experience that sees connectivity being standard. This will represent a big technological leap for Indian aviation, and at present, efficiency is one of the weakest points of the local market. As previously mentioned, the amount of live data that can be afforded to airlines brings them new opportunities for overcoming some of the challenges that are inherent in the Indian market, such as rising fuel prices, demand from passenger that want consistently low fares, and questions around how to maintain business margins. Honeywell allows airlines to think in motion, so they do not have to be reactive to issues. Instead they are able to analyze data relating to almost every aspect of an aircraft and their wider operation to see where they can adapt their methods and improve the business of flight. LAWS SHOULD CREATE A WIN-WIN SITUATION WHICH ENCOURAGES COMPLIANCE AND KEEPS CONSUMER DATA SAFE As India readies itself for an era of data compliance and regulations, it is important that the law be formulated such that the customer data shall remain safe however companies are penalized based on their cyber security track record. On the other hand, organizations need to understand that they are the ‘custodians’ of customer data and not the ‘owners’, so they need to remain careful while handling user data.
“Consent of the customer to use and store information and Due Diligence are the two keys to ensure compliance. A CISO/CIO should know what PII (Personally Identifiable Information) is being received, processed, and stored in their infrastructure.”
SANJIT CHATTERJEE,
CEO, REVE ANTIVIRUS
How are Indian Companies and Businesses getting along with the compliance headache? BGovernments around the world are getting particular about the usage and safety of user data. New Policies are being introduced to ensure that customer data is not being misused by companies or data does not get hacked. Organizations need to understand that they are the ‘custodians’ of customer data and not the ‘owners’, so they need to remain careful while handling user data.
How damaging can be failure of GDPR compliance for any organization? It can be extremely damaging. Companies dealing with European Union customers have to face serious penalties if they fail to comply with the GDPR standards. Besides paying 20 million Euros or 4 percent of annual global turnover, failure of GDPR compliance can put an entire business to risk and can even erode brand value since you are not doing things the right way.
What are important factors for any CISO/CIO to keep in mind with ensuring compliance? Consent of the customer to use and store information and Due Diligence are the two keys to ensure compliance. A CISO/CIO should know what PII (Personally Identifiable Information) is being received, processed, and stored in their infrastructure and whether the safeguarding mechanism and tools are in place to protect this data.
Indian Govt. is also mulling bringing in Data Protection Laws. What do you expect from the Govt.? The Data Protection principles state that all organizations who are receiving personal data have to make sure that the information is used fairly, lawfully and transparently. We see GDPR as one extreme kind of legislation. Legislation has to be fair to both the companies and customers. Law has to be formulated such that the customer data shall remain safe however companies are penal.
ized based on their cyber security track record. Penalties should be reasonable and based on the size and turnover of the company. It should be a win-win situation, which encourages compliance and makes consumer data safe. What is your advice to CIOs and CISOs on the way forward in the era of compliance? You never know when a breach is going to happen. So the advice is to do two things. Firstly, there should be multiple layers of security at Application and Network level. Secondly, the incidents of data theft can be from internal sources. This can be controlled or prevented through advance DLP (Data Loss Prevention) mechanisms. Organizations can deploy Endpoint Security Solutions, with advanced DLP features. Along with deploying the right IT security tools, organizations should make its employees aware about cyber security best practices. To manage the IT Security Solutions, organizations can recruit trained professionals or go for the services of Managed Security Service Providers. AUGUST 2018 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 53
