DIGITIZATION THE WAY TO TRANSPARENCY Digitization is the real way to transformation for any country and India as a country, which is trying to grow faster and take its billion

population on a growth path and create the atmosphere of transparency among the citizens, business, law enforcement agencies, legislature and judiciary, digitization is the must. Therefore, Prime Minister Modi’s mandate is to make all citizen centric documentations digitized so that there is a transparency and quick action. Similarly, on the PSU like BFSI level, the companies have already adopted the digitization. But what about government organizations and commercial organization? Today, many of the services in the government level are available in semi-digital format. These are not so complete but to make the platform full-fledged there has to be a lot of work on the infrastructure level. The companies around the world are looking at

the Indian market. So in the absolute numbers the private organizations would yield around $394.4 billion opportunity over the next 10 years and the public sector will be responsible for a tune of $116.2 billion yield. So what is going to be connected is really mammoth. The entire rural economy will be connected through mobile phones. The education sector including schools, colleges and universities would see free WiFi and citizen services including parking, metering, healthcare, toll taxes, property taxes, birth and death registration – all these services will come on digital platform. The citizens can see their dues in black and white and can pay the actual amount or see the resolution of issues. And there would be no middle man or human interference. Not only this is extremely useful for the citizens but also good for the employees who can see their duties and rights in black and white and if there is any deviation they can expect reparation. Similarly, on the commercial organization level, the digitization can play wonders reason being there are many companies where people feel duped for the payment they may against the services, if digitization impacts these private organizations, the customers can have an assurance of the services that they would get. For example, the electricity consumption from private organization or telephone or broadband service consumed from the service providers if everything is digitized on real-time basis the consumers can get information on daily basis and they can restrict their consumption and therefore restrict their expenses. So the opportunity is really mammoth and the stake holders that would be involved in executing the project would be multiple.

Cyber-espionage Group Suckfly Targets Indian Organizations

B Y S A N J AY @ A C C E N T I N FO M E D I A . C O M

Symantec has published a blog on activities of Suckfly- an advance cyberespionage group that conducted long term espionage campaigns against high profile targets including government and commercial organizations in India. Symantec identified a number of attacks over a two-year period, beginning in April 2014. These attacks occurred in several different countries, but Symantec’s investigation revealed that the primary targets were individuals and organizations primarily located in India. The Indian targets show a greater amount of post-infection activity than targets in the other regions. This suggests that these attacks were part of a planned operation against specific targets in India. The Symantec blog on the activities of Suckfly takes an in-depth look at its activities in India along with its attack lifecycle. As per the press release, many of the targets Symantec identified were well known commercial 6

These organizations included: • One of India’s largest financial organizations • A large e-commerce company • The e-commerce company’s primary shipping vendor • One of India’s top five IT firms • A United States health care provider’s Indian business unit • Two government organizations While most of Suckfly group’s attacks are focused on government organisations (32%), technology (29%), e-commerce (14%), financial (14%), shipping (7%) and healthcare (4%) were also targeted by this group. Suckfly targeted one of India’s largest e-commerce companies, a major Indian shipping company, one of the largest financial organizations, and an IT firm that provides support for India’s largest stock exchange.

Steve Grobman, Intel Security CTO

Intel Security Reveals Organizations Wary of Cloud Adoption Intel Security has come out with its ‘Blue Skies Ahead? The State of Cloud Adoption’ global report advocating the need for technology vendors to help businesses, governments and consumers understand the implications surrounding the growing adoption of the cloud. With a majority 77 percent participants noting that their organizations trust cloud computing more than a year ago, just 13 percent completely trust public cloud providers to secure sensitive data. These findings highlight improved trust and security as critical to encouraging continued adoption of the cloud. The cloud already has a strong impact in the daily lives of many people and businesses, with an ever-growing number of activities performed on digital devices leveraging cloud computing in some way. The increasing use of the cloud is underscored by Intel’s survey, which found that in the next 16 months, 80 percent of respondent IT budgets will be dedicated to cloud computing, said the release. According to the report, Steve Grobman, Intel Security CTO and Intel Fellow, along with Brian Dye, Intel Security Corporation VP and GM of corporate products, discussed the report’s implications for federal government cloud deployments at the ‘Security through Innovation’ Summit on April 14th in Pentagon City, Virginia. According to Jim Reavis, CEO of the Cloud Security Alliance, “The cloud is the future for businesses, governments and consumers. Security vendors and cloud providers must arm customers with education and tools, and cultivate strong relationships built on trust, in order to continue the adoption of cloud computing platforms. Only then can we completely benefit from the advantages of the cloud.”

Gartner expects global IT spending to dip slightly in 2016, to $3.49 trillion which is down by 0.5% from last year. Also noted was that this number was down from its last-quarter forecast of 0.5% increase. The change, according to Gartner, is due to fluctuations in currency, but also a balancing act between fiscal caution and the need to invest in digital business areas. As per Gartner, some companies are taking what they’re saving from optimizing legacy systems and using it to invest in digital initiatives. Such optimization often takes the form of turning to a service twin like cloud software instead of service software. Thus according to Gartner’s researchers, companies are redirecting their spending from assets to services. Gartner expects spending in the IT services market to return to growth this year, and reach $929

billion, up 2.1% from 2015. Telecom service spending is expected to decline by 2%, to $1.4 trillion, although mobile data spending will be an area of exception, encouraged by improved pricing on bandwidth, mobile apps, and 4G/LTE network availability. Spending on data center systems is also expected to grow, topping 2015 spending by 2.1%, for a total of $175 billion. Enterprise network equipment purchasing, which performed better than expected in 2015, will again be a bright spot, according to the firm. The device market, however, which includes smartphones, tablets, PCs, printers, and ultramobiles is headed for a decline of 3.7% below 2015 spending. The smartphone market is approaching global saturation which is slowing growth according to Gartner.

Fujitsu Puts Forwards a New Approach to Digital Transformation

“We at IDC see cognitive systems spending reaching US$31 billion by 2019.”

How does cognitive computing differ from big data and analytics? Cognitive computing and big data and analytics are not necessarily different from one another but are meant to work hand-in-hand, with the former enabling and maximizing the potential of the latter. The largest challenge with big data is while there’s a lot of information being generated and curated, there’s not enough talent to manage and analyze it. Cognitive computing seeks to alleviate this problem by training computers to use data mining techniques such as deep learning, pattern recognition and natural language processing (NLP) to mirror the way the human brain works but in an automated and faster manner. How pervasive will cognitive systems be in the next few years? We at IDC see cognitive systems spending reaching US$31 billion by 2019 as more organizations utilize its potential to improve operations. More than half of cognitive systems spending will be on software, while 23% and 17% will be on cognitive-related services (like IT consulting) and hardware, respectively. In the next few years, banking, healthcare and retail will be the top markets utilizing cognitive systems for fraud analysis, diagnosis, and automated customer service agents.

Fujitsu has come out with the latest evolution of the Fujitsu Technology and Service Vision proposing a different approach to help organizations incorporate digital technology into the heart of their business, strengthening competitiveness and growing the top line as well as the profit. It also outlines practical steps about how digital leaders can overcome the challenges of digital, by aligning and balancing new digital technology with their traditional IT assets. As per the press release, launched each year starting in April 2013, the ‘Fujitsu Technology and Service Vision’ is built around digital technology and how it can empower people to create significant value for business and society. Fujitsu calls this approach Human Centric Innovation, which is the key to driving digital transformation. Among the key messages of the Fujitsu Technology and Service Vison 2016 was that digital transformation must be driven by a human centric approach. In a digitalized, hyper-connected world, value is created by the coming together

of three key drivers, creativity of people, intelligence derived from information and the connectedness of things and processes. Human Centric Innovation is about bringing together these things and Fujitsu believes is the best approach to deliver successful digital transformation. In 2015, applying this approach, Fujitsu conducted over 300 Proof of Concept and Proof of Business digital transformation projects with its customers. These projects can be categorized in a range of fields such as digital marketing, connected retail, smart mobility, logistics, smart factory, workstyle transformation, personal safety, smart agriculture, facility monitoring and Fintech. According to the Vision’16, the new digitalized economy, demands a different strategy. A diverse and extensive range of digitalized products and services will be connected via software, exchanging information, and delivering greater value for people. The value that consumers demand will be co-created by suppliers, partners and even the consumers themselves in newly emerging digital arenas.

The program essentially works on the core idea of laying a digital network on which services will be delivered in a transparent and timely manner. The aim is to begin with providing broadband for all especially in the rural areas, encourage universal mobile access, provide WiFi in varsities and public WiFi Hotspots. Digital India is more like a broader version of

the e-governance programs that were running till now. Keeping this vision in mind, the government has already increased the IT spending, both on hardware and software with almost 6 lakh kms of fibre has been laid to create the digital highway. The Indian market is such that it allows for the development of disruptive business solutions, new go-to-market channels and technologies for emerging markets. The possibilities are immense; with the game on, it is a matter of time that this ambitious project of digitizing India is a huge success. With a whole host of services and innovations that can ride the digital platform, citizens can draw immense benefits from healthcare to education, citizen services to transportation and the like. As more such services get digitized a digital India will becomea reality. No doubt that digitization of the county and the development of smart cities will fundamentally change people’s lives - whether it’s job creation, skills development, or delivering broadband to every citizen. For enterprises in the domestic market, Digitization will unfold substantial opportunities to experiment and succeed. For companies dealing with IT, especially for System Integrators, many of the Government initiatives such as ”Make in India” (in the area of manufacturing), ”Jan DhanYojana” (aimed at financial inclusion), Smart Cities (in the infrastructure space) will be opening large markets. The time is ripe for companies to launch new-to-the market scalable digital offerings in partnerships with governments, startups and other key players in the digital ecosystem. They can further more stabilize their digitalization efforts in the Indian marketplace thanks to the rapidly expanding pool of consumers who are waiting to get engaged digitally. An added advantage is the ready talent that is available. A digitally engage-able company needs to be sure about its approach to digitalization and as to how it can leverage it into a driver of profitable growth for the company. First and foremost, the CEO and the top team must focus on creating awareness and ownership about digitalization across the company. Secondly, they need to form a comprehensive digitalization roadmap and a strategy which they need to share with all stakeholders. Not the least, the company needs to take relevant steps towards digitalization, building its capabilities and transform its

he story of Digital India traces its beginnings way back to 1976, when the government heralded IT in the country with the establishment of the National Informatics Center. The idea behind the initiation was the objective of integrating technology to enable ministries and departments to operate on a unified platform. The result was India’s first digital communication network, the NICNET was created. Technology since then has taken leaps and bounds, with its gigantic strides quite literally changing the face of the planet. Initiatives integrating technology with operations like e-governance have been in action since the 90s when the government first took a step towards Digitization of its public services. Now, with the new leadership expressing its earnest views towards achieving a ‘Digitalized India’, initiatives and modernization plans are being put to action with fire like never before. The BJP government has been churning out campaigns and digitization plans in collaboration with a number of domestic and foreign IT players. It plans laying down massive optical fiber networks, not just covering the urban households but connecting villages as well. Initiatives like ‘Smart Cities’ and ‘Digitize India Platform’ are aimed at upgrading Tier 2, 3 and 4 cities, giving them the power of ICT in day to day life as well as transforming public services and administration. There is no doubt that digitization will come as a boon for the ahow country. The government’s core objectives for Digital India – rural internet access, mobile for all, college and public wireless – seek to empower the common man giving unto him the power of information. With digitization in place, sectors like healthcare, education, BFSI and public services will see transformations with IT revolutionizing business models. Corporate markets would spur with technologies for surveillance and security, emergency services, transport management, disaster management etc. The digital fuel will fire employment in the country, resulting in an increase in the already burgeoning number of internet-based startups as well as massive public-private projects. Economically, the India will witness foreign collaboration and in turn substantial inflow of cash. In light of the transformation and gradual shift towards IT services, both the public and private sectors are looking towards exciting times of advancement. Digitization brings scalability and with it the ability to consolidate infrastructure and improve performance leading to more efficient business models. The corporate sector has been licking its lips, closely observing the developments and looking for opportunities to collaborate and progress. The private sector, as exclaimed by PM Modi in his speeches on Digital India, has a huge role to play in the government achieving its goals. Not just a market for IT deployment, corporate 18 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    MAY 2016

India influences modernization of services, creates jobs, executes govt. initiatives. Thus, acting as a catalyst for countrywide IT advancement, the corporate sector will be at the forefront of the digital revolution, transforming itself with time, adopting and implementing new technologies. Let’s take a closer look at how the Indian enterprises have received the mission of digitization, the changes being witnessed, their expectations, projections and plans for the future. Adoption of Technologies With a new wave of technologies coming in, enterprises have been gradually shifting towards adoption of SMAC (Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud) services through business innovations. SMAC technologies have gathered momentum and enterprises of the day have been employing such technologies in their models. The recent changes in technology have prominently been related to mobility, abundance of information about client behaviors, development of Cloud Computing and the explosion of social networks both nationally and internationally. Orange Technologies’ Bala Mahadevan commented, “Enterprises today have been leveraging various innovations under SMAC to improve different aspects of the business, ranging from precision marketing with social platforms and customer analytics, seamless connectivity and scalability

through cloud adoption for tasks like CRM and reducing capital expenditure.” According to Ankesh Kumar, Director, Product Management and Marketing, Emerson India, “SMAC will come to have a huge impact on how datacenters will come to function. Social, mobile, cloud and analytics are at the forefront of driving the need for innovation in the datacenter. The increasingly global and mobile nature of business is also increasing the dependency on cloud-based services.” Sectors like Banking and Insurance industry, e-Commerce and Telecom players have been leveraging SMAC very effectively. Vivek Naidu of Kodak Alaris said, “Large Banks have started providing instant updates to their customers through multiple channels, including SMAC, to enhance user experience. The Indian Railways also uses SMAC for enhancing convenience of passengers both for services as well as for safety.” In manufacturing, Analytics iscrucial. According to Prashant Pradhan of IBM Watson, “Many consumer facing industries have run successful digital initiatives using SMAC aspects and reached a good level of maturity.” Apart from enterprises, SMAC has been empowering consumers as well. This is exemplified by that fact that smartphones are transforming the retail experience enabling mobile shopping and services. It is estimated that in the next few years, over half of smartphone users will check prices online when in the store. “This shows that Digitization has dissolved boundaries and empowered Indian users and not only corporate in adapting and adopting new technology with seamless ease,” added Naidu. receptive to modern technologies which is further fueled by Government of India’s vision of building Digital India where technology is the pivot. Such high degree of digital transformation is making systems more complex, interconnected, while computing a lot more information. As per Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report Vol. 20, India ranks high both as a source and destination of cyberattacks. Insurgence of cloud, mobility and Internet of Things enabled devices makes information security a prerequisite for businesses where security needs to be considered as an integral part of the plan rather than an afterthought.” He added, “Symantec is moving beyond traditional software to help customers protect against a wider range of threats. Scope and Opportunity for Businesses Technological innovations have brought along a disruption in enterprise operations. Organizations have been making shifts towards new IT services and have been witnessing major gains. Also, with nationwide digitization, the government has been encouraging technological adoption at all levels. Counting on technological integration, Naidu said that the government wants to implement a G2C model for delivering services. G2Cservices will have numerous opportunities for the private sector to collaborate and enable the government in delivering digitized services. Keeping plans for universal web access in place, G2C services; few years down the lane would be hugely dependent on private imaging product vendors for enabling convergence of mobile scanning of records and integrating from remote locations into centralized repositories. Government’s stand on utilizing technology for overall development through the Digital India and Smart Cities initiatives has sent ripples of excitement across sectors. According to Bala Mahadevan, these two programs are the foundations of the current thrust to drive India towards technological prowess. Private players are

expected to have limitless opportunities huge part catering to government projects for emergency response systems, disaster recovery systems, and security and surveillance systems, city-wide security, public surveillance systems in airports, malls or large campuses, and vehicle tracking systems. Digitization is centered on providing a digital infrastructure as a utility to every citizen, governance and services on demand, and digital empowerment of citizens, this is bound to increase IT spending. With enhanced reach, electronic delivery of services will enable industries such as banking, retail, and telecom to offer services to a much larger user base, which in turn will again increase IT spending.“The interest in organizations on leveraging the possibilities created by deployment of SMAC technologies will continue to drive the demand for smarter and leaner datacenters in the enterprise,” says Kumar from Emerson India. IOT and analytics are expected to take prominence. As per Rao, “We are building on our IoT and data analytics market momentum in 2016, with an aggressive rollout of new solutions and services planned. We see a lot of opportunity in the government’s Digital India and Smart Cities campaign, not just as a technology provider but more as a Social Innovation specialist.”Apart from being an initiative for technological advancement, Digital India also moots for a social transformation. It intends to inspire and empower the population towards collective modernization and growth of years ahead. Growth in IT spending is just one of the ripple-down effects of the digital initiatives. It would enhance productivity in the

Digitization is already leading to incubation of newer and innovative technologies, which revolve around creating new businesses, bringing about social change and making a progressive and connected society. Transforming Businesses and Industries According to Venugopal Rao of Hitachi Data Systems,“Indian enterprises will focus on creating integrated data centers for optimizing existing IT assets and delivering non-stop IT services to business. This will drive greater emphasis on public cloud and software defined networking, and will drive demand for smarter and more secure storage infrastructure and data management systems.” With digitization comes automation. Naidu says, “Robotics and automation play a vital role in the consolidation of paper documents which is an important Government asset. processes. Service providers and e-commerce players commonly use of global Shared Service Centers for extensive paperwork jobs like creating thousands of vendor invoices or insurance claims with minimal use of manpower, and high levels of accuracy. Kumar adds that, “Analytics/big data and Internet of Things technologies are likely to be in focus this year. Improving business environment as well as the digital India movement will positively see IT spends increase, thereby increasing the breadth of digital initiatives and the overhaul ofapplications and infrastructure to support those initiatives.” With that being said, Industrial automation is definitely is especially on the rise and will continue to grow thanks to support initiatives such as Make in India. Domestic IT firms have commenced manufacturing industrial robots locally. “Deployment of robotics and automation in government operations and industries will helpIndian businesses attain shorter RoI cycles and thus will drive short to medium term growth,” added Pradhan. Expectations from the Government The corporate world has welcomed the various initiatives like Make in India, Smart Cities, and digitization of documents (DIP) as these have expanded the scope for G2C services. States have been deploying products to digitize land records dating back to the 19th century. Crime records have been digitized and agencies have been using digitization technology to control crime by tracking, surveillance and networking crime information. Such tasks are being undertaken in all states with an all round push from the government towards a seamless and structured administration, Naidu said. The initiative Digital India was launched with an aim to connect Indians globally. It is vital that a large population, perhaps the majority of it, is exposed to such digital platforms. This will not only fasten processes but also make these processes transparent and holds those in power accountable. Mahadevan says, “With such an expansive roll out plan, delay is an inevitable outcome as the projects encompass a number of partners, stakeholders and government departments. The government needs to buck up on the release of funds while also improving efficiency in its execution strategies.” There is a dire need of skilled IT professionals to tend to the growing sector. Policies should make Indian jobs and salaries more attractive than foreign companies. There is also a need for the government to observe and realize challenges in fields like healthcare and education and collaborate more to rapidly improve the state of these sectors in the country. Kumar further added, “We expect the govern22 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    MAY 2016

ment to provide clear guidelines on how they plan to ease investments and make them hassle free in rural India. This will help in creating jobs in tier-II and tier-III cities.” Startups as Enablers Young and driven, startups have been identified as a crucial driver for digitization by the government. There have been a number of solutions from startups which have been enabling the government to enforce the digital infrastructure. Big IT players across the country too have been majorly collaborating with startups using their technologies to provide cleaner solutions. Additionally, e-commerce startups have stated that the Digital India campaign has been the main driving force for setting up businesses online. The government too has given startups due support, encouraging growth with favorable policies. Mahadevan added, “Presently, India has an estimated over 4,200 start-ups and is consequently the third largest start-up base in the world with more than 1,200 start-ups being created annually. The spread of digital technologies and advances in energy and genomics have been projected to increase the productivity of businesses, agriculture redefining sectors like education and health care for millions.”Growth of partner ecosystems across industries and disciplines is also a driving factor for startups as well as for collective sector growth. He further said, “As per NASSCOM, the country will serve as home to more than 11,500 tech/digital start-ups by the end of 2020 if the present growth trend continues.” Areas of Growth 2016 As per Naidu, “the year will witness acceleration in internet penetration in India.” Expansion of digital highways will drive sectors like e-Commerce, entertainment and logistics. G2C services will be the mainstay in regard to the quantity of spending on improving IT structure. Consumer facing industries are expected to take lead with customer acquisition, customer service and marketing moving aggressively to digital channels. Industries in sectors such as manufacturing and distribution will also have significant IoT adoptions for productivity & operational improvements. The channel business in the country is expected to grow in the 2016. As HDS’ Rao points out, “Most of our business is driven through channel partners in India, and they will continue to play a key role in our growth strategy.” Mahadevan added, “Security and surveillance will be crucial to development of smart cities and improving national security. The government has major plans for deployment of services like ERS- Emergency Response System and IBM – Integrated Border Management with the help of global technology giants.” Apart from security and surveillance, tactical communication will

also witness an updraft in 2016. Planned digitization of official documents will result in a huge surge in market for data and cloud services. Enhancement and integration to cloud for businesses has resulted in emergence of data centers and storage solutions for enterprises. Security of data on both cloud and devices has become important and a boost is expected. As per Kumar, some of the areas within Digital India movement that can positively drive IT spending in the country include tech-enabled programs such as, MyGov citizen portal, Self-Employment and Talent Utilization (SETU) programs for startups and initiatives like Smart Cities and Make in India. Finally In the current scenario, digitization is bound to evolve as the foundation of businesses. Organizations and enterprises have started making the shift towards IT and so has the government with its structure and public services. Keeping data stored safely and accessible on the cloud is the most important aspect. Popular approaches to data management like migration, conversion and adoption have become obsolete. Enterprise architecture and records management professionals need to collaborate, working cross-functionally with business users and jointly developing their technical roadmap for the identification and exploration to store corporate records. Also, to benefit from digital transformation, organizations will need to rethink working practices, and choose better-adapted and more agile IT infrastructures, added Bala Mahadevan . Compared with other countries, India currently resides some way short of being accepted as an IT giant. Although the sector has been an established one, its integration and impact on other verticals had been missing. Digitization of public services and enabling a digital population has been the government’s major initiative. India as a country might behighly resourceful; the sheer size of the digitization project is bound to create creeks and gaps in the process. Although the audacity of the initiative is commendable, and so is the mission, the government still needs to put a firm foot forward in transforming India as a feeder of IT professionals to a hub of information technologies. The country has rapidly become a hot market for foreign companies with many venturing into India to reap benefits of the vast and encouraging digitization of the country. Digital highways and smartphone enablement is expected to empower the entire nation making knowledge accessible even in the most remote rural villages across terrain. Missions like the Digitize India Platform with initiatives like Make in India will result in spurring business generation, stabilizing the economy and giving Indians the onus to progress with the power of information technology in their pockets.

ntil recently, everything enterprises needed to protect; be it the data centers or applications, databases, were nestled inside the perimeter. The basic rule was to secure an organization’s perimeter and its assets Today, the perimeter walls no longer exist, as enterprise applications have moved to the cloud. In short, assets are everywhere. In this scenario, how can an organization protect all enterprise assets—no matter where they reside? In many organizations, Data centers operate in multiple locations, while a growing portion of the infrastructure lives in the cloud. Dispersing the IT infrastructure while having its benefits

also throws up many challenges. With the safe borders of the perimeter no longer protecting all enterprise assets, existing security measures need to be re-evaluated. While enterprise security is evolving, so are cybercriminals and attacks. Attackers and tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated. It has become common knowledge that there is no way to prevent attacks—but there is a very strong need to mitigate them. If an organization’s security strategy does not take all of that into consideration, the organization and its users are at risk. Recent developments in information technologies and user mobility have transformed the IT infrastructure into a strong enabler for business

agility and efficiency—while also introducing new security challenges to IT/security managers and enterprises.. The following are some of the scenarios that prevail in today’s timesl The network perimeter is disappearing. As enterprises haveextended IT infrastructure to the public cloud, deploying new applications in the cloud or using it for disaster recovery, they now face the need to protect applications in the cloud as well as private data centers. In such a case, traditional security technologies become inadequate and enterprises must build multiple skill sets and maintain a new set of management tools. l The Content Delivery Network market is expanding. Content delivery network (CDN) solutions present new vulnerabilities, with hackers asking for dynamic content to overcome the powerful cache offloading mechanism that is the core of CDN solutions. Using this method, sophisticated attackers can build attack tools that go below the CDN radar and manage to saturate the application servers in the data center. l Data center virtualization is driving vulnerability to availability-based attacks. While private cloud technologies protect the confidentiality and integrity of application data, they lack the ability to protect the physical infrastructure against availability-based attacks. Attacks targeting external applications impact the availability of internal critical applications—and an attack on a single application may endanger other applications on a shared infrastructure. According to Gartner, enterprises are overly dependent on the “blocking and prevention mechanism” that are increasingly ineffective against advanced attacks. Recognizing that security tools typically act as “islands of knowledge,” attackers are launching complex attack campaigns To read more features, go to www.enterpriseitworld.com/guest article

100% FDI IN E-COMMERCE MARKETPLACE:

COMMENDABLE OR COSMETIC? As the government provides much needed clarity to the sector with its policy guidelines, players are abuzz with the centre’s intent in maintaining a level playing field for the online and offline markets. The Modi government is trying to structure and spur the sector that has been attracting large sums of foreign investor money. ith a view to bringing clarity, the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotions came out with their guidelines with regard to e-commerce sector, permitting 100% FDI through automatic route in the B2B model. The guidelines came with definitions defining B2B and B2C marketplaces hoping to render a more technology oriented approach to the Indian e-commerce markets. The move for 100% FDI in B2B marketplace was welcomed by many key Indian and international players, who regarded it as the right step forward in attracting investment as well as giving preference to the domestic local seller over capital equipped entities. Apart from this, the government has put a restriction, capping sales from a single vendor for a marketplace at 25%. This particular decision was hailed as game changer by players, critics and experts, as this would create a stumbling block for companies that disguise themselves as B2B whilst operating in B2C segments. However, it remains to be seen how effective a check the government keeps on this restriction which can be perceived to be the most prominent influencer in the achieving the outcome intended with this reform. “I think it is a great move. This will further strengthen the investor confidence in the Indian economy and furthermore help create cleaner ecommerce models,” addsHitendraChaturvedi, CEO, GreenDust Widely acclaimed as the most beneficial point in the government policy is the restriction on e-commerce companies from directly or indirectly influencing the sale of goods. This would be a blessing for the offline multi brand retailers who have been unable to tackle the failing footfall due to the attractive discounts and cut throat pricing customers can avail online. The offline retailers which consist of stand-alone shops and vendors in shopping malls had been facing increasingly stiff competition from online marketplaces which were able to leverage tons of investor money to give away huge discounts. Not being able to influence pricing is expected to give much value back to the brick and mortar outlets. “Earlier it was a fight between capital and local sellers. Now it will be local sellers vs. local sellers. Business will not be built just on discounts but also on true value a platform builds,”Rahul Agrawal, CEO, MebelKart. The government’s proposed restrictions and

directions for e-commerce businesses might appear to bring clarity and transparency to the structure, but there are lesser visible aspects of the retail trade that might render the policy just cosmetic. Although the government has rejected the idea of FDI in inventory based business models, ambiguities like a lack of clarity between B2B and B2C might allow e-commerce companies to bend the rules through documentation and legalities. Many big players supposedly operating as B2B platforms enabling buyers to meet sellers already have warehousing capabilities in place apart from handling the documentation, sales, logistics etc. Such companies can might on plying in the B2C segment, disguising as buyer-meetsseller platforms, use their own inventory based models and have their vendors come out with the billing. Making the vendors responsible for sales and after sales operations can be termed as just another superficial guideline as the guarantee and warranty aspects of any product have traditionally be the job of the manufacturer or vendor. Keeping a vigilant eye on such unethical practices would be crucial. “While the guidelines seek to provide clarity on the current policy, the language seems to suggest that the policy will take immediate effect. Some of the restrictive conditions prescribed under the guidelines could also pose significant challenges and would therefore need to be evaluated closely,”Kalpesh Maroo, Partner, BMR & Associates. Thxis Business will not be built just on discounts but also on true value a platform builds,”

Talking about creating a level playing field, restricting prices and outside investment in inventory based models is surely not the solution to the struggles of MBR outlets across the country. The government by policy allows only a 51% FDI in multi brand retail outlet (there is 100% FDI for standalone brands). Couple this with stringent clauses like 30% sourcing from small enterprises, minimum investment value of $100million and individual state approvals almost make foreign investment in the sector prohibitory. With such tough to meander laws, there’s a possibility that none of the restrictions on online marketplaces might turn out advantageous for the offline counterparts. For the customers, one can be sure that the days of mouthwatering deals and discounts in Indian e-commerce might be over. These restrictions coupled with single vendor sales share capping will further mar the USP of online 26 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    MAY 2016

shopping as shoppers might no longer be able to avail the wide array of choices and large quantities available from a single vendor. As such, the new guideline might deter ‘big sale days’ and other such customer friendly practices on online marketplaces. “We have been working hard to build the required digital infrastructure that allows merchants to build their businesses online. This announcement is a clear vindication of our approach. We would like to thank the government for clarifying this,” Kiran Murthi, CEO, AskmeBazaar Taking the entire picture into account, the guidelines can be termed beneficial for the sector, but it addressed the larger aspects of the rifts between online and offline retail only partially. 100% FDI would surely bring in a ton of foreign investment into an already flourishing and heavily invested in Indian e-commerce

market and the definitions and written guidelines would bring much needed consolidation to a rapidly growing but equally unregulated sector. Allowing 100% FDI in technology platforms enabling buyer-seller interactions and easy business operations is a boost undeniably, but to implement the idea of a level playing field, the government needs to give a real push to the offline segment, rather than bringing the online marketplace to its level. However, apart from giving it clarity and structure, adherence to the policy guidelines and regulations will be much dependent on checkpoints and vigilance in administration and implementation of the part of the government. The policy is out and players in the sector are already underway incubating as to the best possible approach for them going forward, but how the sector unfolds in the face of the guidelines, only time will tell.

BATTLING THE ENEMY WITHIN Traditionally, cyber-attacks on corporate networks have come from outside the organization. With the growing usage of personalmobile devices and the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), however, the danger now also comes from the walls within.

he world moves swiftly; the IT security world even more so. Just a couple of years ago, securing the enterprise would basically consist of protecting anorganization from external intruders. Today, the battle has changed ground. Education efforts from industry players have created higher levels of IT security awareness in the business world, and more firms have implemented basic security measures that can thwart directattacks effectively. This developmentis forcing hackers to up their game by figuring out alternative ways to get their hands on valuable enterprise assets. One new strategy that is becoming more common across the world is for hackers to gain entry to a corporate network by targeting its weakest points. Such points can include an unsecured employee mobile phone, or a workstation with limited access to corporate data. These weak points typically reside in low value segments of the corporate network. Once the hacker breaks in and gets a toehold, however, he can often navigate to other more valuable parts of the network −which tend to be much more rigorously protected from external attackers −quite easily. This “lateral movement” modus operandi proves to be effective most of the time because many organizations do not isolate different segments of the network from one another. Moving from segment to segment is usuallya breeze once hackers get into the network. A few trends will make such attacks from withinthe organization more common in the coming years: 1. The increasing adoption of employeeowned mobile devices in enterprise environments. These are often poorly secured and provide a weak point of entry into the organization for hackers. 2. The exponential growth of IoT devices. Early and even current versions of these devices are not designed with security in mind, and are very tedious if not impossible to secure properly. 3. Advancement in hacking techniques.

Internal Segmentation Firewalls Needed Traditionally, organizations deploy firewalls at the perimeter of the network for protection. Edge firewalls label all external traffic (i.e. Internet traffic) as untrusted, while designating all intra-network traffic as trusted, and handle them intwo distinct ways. There are no grey areas; no ambiguity. Unfortunately the world isn’t black and white anymore. With the rise of attacks originating from weak segments of the network, the line delineating trusted and untrusted traffic has blurred. Merely deploying firewalls at the edge of the network is no longer adequate −organizations need to re-architecture their network such that internal firewalling can restrict malware flow between different segments of the organization. According to research firm Forrester, enterprises have built strong perimeters, but well-organized cybercriminals have recruited insiders and developed new attack methods that easily bypass their current security protections. Security and risk professionals today must make security ubiquitous throughout the network, not just at the perimeter. Forrester advocates the zero trust security model, where the network is securely segmented, and all traffic is inspected and logged. With such a model, the information flow between an engineer and his/her marketing colleague seated next to each other, for example, will no longer proceed unchecked. Because these two employees are assigned to different network segments and an internal segmentation firewall (ISFW) is in place, proper policies will be applied and logs will be generated for any traffic traversing between the two departments. ISFW comprises two kinds of technologies − policy-based segmentation that identifies a user’s parameters, and dynamically and consistently enforces a security policy controlling the user’s access to enterprises resources; and firewall segmentation that divides up the internal network

to enable traffic analysis, logging and full security control. An ISFW does not replace the edge firewall. Instead, an ISFW provides multiple touch points within a network in order to provide security between existing network boundaries, or create entirely new segments inside of existing network boundaries. It also improves visibility by letting IT management see all layers of the network in one pane of glass. Depending on the level of security needed between each network segment, the types of protection enabled will vary. Once a firewall is deployed into each segment of an enterprise network, its policy, loggingand various modern detection featurescan help identify and quarantine users that have been compromised. Also, the firewalls would make it much harder for hackers to do reconnaissance and discovery even if theyhavestarted to make their way inside the company network. ISFWs should work in synchronization with one another, leveragingthreat intelligenceand be complemented by advanced persistent threat (APT) detection solutions like sandboxingand endpoint security solutions so thatactions can be taken to identify compromises and quarantine them as soon as they are discovered. Removing the Performance and Cost Barriers Enterprises’ traditional objections to putting a firewall in front of each network segment have beenaround performance and price. Because intra-network trafficvolume can be many times that of Internet traffic volume, not many firewalls have the capability to handle the workloads without significant latency. Those that can handle it, when deployed in large numbers to cover each network segment within the enterprise, can make the cost prohibitive for many organizations. Today, however, attainable solutions exist. Modern firewalls that leverage custom ASIC chips can be fast enough to handle internal firewalling and be cost effective at the same time. Some may recall that per-port security was all the rage a few years ago, until implementation hurdles put an end to that promise. Current ISFW technology is a step towards reviving that promise. As technologies in switching and access port security evolves and performance improves, we will be able to combine them with ISFW to reach that goal. The concept of internal segmentation firewalling has put the network security industry on the cusp of an exciting era. Firms that want to take their operations − and their business − one step ahead of the competition should take advantage of it. MAY 2016    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD

ENABLING THE MARGINALIZED TO EARN MONEY WITH RESPECT Auto rickshaw drives would never be treated or perceived now the way they have been perceived for ages. he auto rickshaw market in India is 10 times the size of the taxi market in terms of rides/day. In spite of that, auto-rickshaws have remained highly underutilized due to inefficiencies prevalent in the conventional hailing procedure. People find it inconvenient to hail an auto-rickshaw by the roadside owing to various factors such as availability and fares. The drivers instead remain idle most of the time and whenever they get a chance, they overcharge the customers. This in turn, makes customers think that the auto-rickshaw drivers are unreliable, creating chaos at both ends. And often times the auto-rickshaw drivers are seen having mid road skirmish with passengers on petty things, mostly on the fare. Although the fare of auto-rickshaw is the lowest but people do not treat them respectfully or even hesitate to give them their dues. Of course for this apathy, no one but the very as a means of earning their auto-rickshaw drivers are responsible. daily livelihood.” We have seen the streets of US where some cities allow vintage auto rickshaw rides and they are overpriced and people hail their toil and pay them hefty. But in India things are different. However, things are going to be changed for better now as the startup have started focusing on the auto-rickshaw market by creating aggregator Apps. For example, the Apps like Poocho, mGaddi, Jugnoo, etc. are becoming popular day by day. Even Ola, the Indian - developed App for taxies bookings have also given access to book auto-rickshaw. This not only creating respectable livelihood for the auto rickshaw drivers but also giving easiness to the passengers and in turn creating IT entrepreneurs in India. The number of these App providers are growing gradually. This is natural though in the country like India but sustenance is a very big challenge. Maintaining Apps, updating it and securing it from the unauthorized access is a big challenge and the developer companies need to have money power to do so, which they raise from various domestic or international lending agencies. But dealing with auto-rickshaw drivers is no mean task? Samar Singla, CEO & Founder of Jugnoo said, “Initially, we faced reluctance by auto-rickshaw drivers to adopt a technology based App as a means of earning their daily livelihood. It took a lot of convincing and training to get them on board with Jugnoo.” So Jugnoo is a mobile App, aggregating auto-rickshaws via technology and enabling optimum utilization of resources. The company has raised $11.5 million in two rounds of funding till now from the investors like Snow Leopard, Paytm and Freecharge. Singla added, “Jugnoo aims to double the income of every auto rickshaw driver in

the country and provide reliable and seamless rides to users at affordable prices.” The cost of the App for auto-rickshaw drivers is zero but what the auto rickshaw needs to have is a smartphone with Jugnoo App installed in it. The company has head count of 30 developers who are responsible for developing the App and the senior leadership of the company including the CTO and Co-founder, Chinmay Aggarwal and Product Manager, Saurabh Wadhawan – both manage and update the App under their own supervision. Singla maintained, “There is no call centre involved for Jugnoo. We operate entirely from our App. To use our App, all one needs to do is install the Jugnoo App on their smartphone and they can then book their ride with just a single tap.” The App has been created in such a way that it works on 2G network and takes only 4 MB space in the phone. Plus, the fares of Jugnoo are cheapest as compared to most of the competitors. Today, only Jugnoo has about 2.5 million registered users and is present in 29 cities of India against the mammoth population. There are about 5 million auto-rickshaws in the country and at present Jugnoo has over 10,000 autorickshaws on board. So, when it provides extra revenue for the autorickshaws, the App developers’ revenue comprises from the convenience fee from the users and some percentage from the auto-rickshaw bill –to be precise is 10-15%. It means the more people use the App, the more is the revenue for the developers. Therefore, the experience of the interface has to be exceptional so that people use it again and again. Jugnoo gives its users an option to pay via Paytm. Users even can rate drivers in Jugnoo and this feedback is analyzed at a regular basis to maintain quality of drivers with Jugnoo. Singla concluded, “We intend to be an undisputed leader in this space and capture at least 10% of the total auto-rickshaw market in the country. Currently, we are present in 29 cities of India and we plan to expand our reach to 100 more cities by the end of next year.” When the company is also expecting a break even by FY 2017, they also launching their B2B initiatives. And pilots are in process with some of the biggest e-commerce companies in the country.

FINALLY… Even though technologically and user interface wise, the App is very user-friendly, light weight and inexpensive, but there is required certain amount of marketing activities. To which, the company addresses largely through word of mouth and also engages in user referral campaigns through social media. MAY 2016    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 33
