EDITOR’S  LETTER

IT LEADERSHIP GEARS UP FOR AN ERA OF REPERCUSSION AND LIABILITY

Right to privacy is a fundamental right and sooner or late it had to be acknowledged by major countries around the

globe. Digital economies have been thriving and with the rapid growth there has been an unprecedented influx of consumer information. With the amount of information on the move and stored in datacenters around the world, the line between what’s publically usable and what’s strictly private has become rather vague. This has led to unethical and objectionable practices by organizations globally, illegally hoarding and selling personal data of global citizens. With pressure mounting up with numerous instances of breaches from data in custody of businesses the world over, the governments started taking the issue of safeguarding their citizen’s data seriously. The European Union General Data Protection Regulations is the most solid step in this direction till date. The GDPR comes across as the Champion of Privacy, promising to be the guardian of personal information of European citizens, no matter where it is kept in the world. The GDPR is regulatory in nature and not just a directive, which means that compliance is mandatory and not an option. This sets a

new trend for Global Governments to ensure that their citizens’ privacy remains a top priority and whosoever falters in safekeeping of such information will be made liable for the damages. The Indian Government too has been pondering over this issue and a separate committee headed by ex-Supreme Court Judge SN Srikrishna to chalk out a draft for the Indian Data Protection Laws. Now, with the fact that customer data safekeeping is a priority like never before, it is time for enterprises to rethink their own data protection framework. The growing regulatory landscape doesn’t just put businesses under the radar of an ombudsman but it makes them directly liable for any theft under their watch. This puts the onus on IT Leadership to carefully draw out the data protection strategy for their organizations and come out of the shadows of other CXOs to take the lead role in the discussion, both on the technological as well as the business side. In case of an unfortunate breach, the GDPR directs the organization which collects, stores or passes on data belonging to an EU citizen as liable and this comes with financial penalties and a damaging blow to the Brand Image among the customer base. With an increasingly digital consumer mindset and market, information is today being exchanges at hand and forms integral components of a number of new age businesses. The consumer is today troubled with the question: Does a stranger has access to my personal information that is being guaranteed as safe? GDPR comes as a weapon for the governments and an asset to consumers as now, in case of a breach, the business will be held liable. The landscape is becoming more vigilant and CIOs and CISOs moving forward will be answerable and culpable for any penalty occurring due to a regulation breach. From the CIO perspective, it is now time to take responsibility for your actions, as the Board and the entire business looks up to them to keep breaches at bay and steer the business clear of any ill-effects of GDPR.

UST Global decodes future of technology with Microsoft

HPE enables zero touch operations with Intelligent Assurance Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced the launch of its HPE Intelligent Assurance suite at Digital Transformation World. HPE Intelligent Assurance is an artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning based platform that provides a powerful way to transform vast amounts of telecommunications network data into proactive resolution actions that pave the way towards zero touch operations and self-driven networks. “Communication Service Providers have a unique opportunity to embark on a successful journey to become Digital Service Providers,” said David Sliter, VP & GM, Communications & Media Solutions, HPE. “Our efforts are focused on helping them operate and orchestrate services in hybrid,

EXECUTIVE

virtualized and cloudified environments, leveraging intent-based modeling and artificial intelligence, to accelerate time to market and enable zero touch operations. HPE Intelligent Assurance is a new and major step in the achievement of our vision. It combines machine learning based intelligence with AI-driven automation to predict problems and proactively resolve them, 24/7.” “As CSPs introduce more and more services and move their networks from a hardware to a software basis, they will quickly find that their infrastructure is too complex and dynamic to manage manually,” said Andy Hicks, Research Director, IDC. “CSPs must therefore automate their operations; that automation, in turn, requires substantially better analytics.”

UST Global, a leading digital technology services company, in partnership with Microsoft, has embarked on a transformative digital journey that brings anthropology, art and technology together, to generate and transform innovative ideas into breakthrough services for customers. UST Global hosted ‘Future Decoded’ at its Trivandrum campus on 15-16 May, 2018, bringing UST Global and Microsoft Leadership, Digital Experts, Developers and IT Pros together to help expand the capabilities of technologists to create solutions of the future. UST Global employees were able to experience the array of possibilities with artificial intelligence, how to apply machine learning to transform various business roles, data driven business innovation models, workplace trends, technology and talent, how to transform lines of business with modern applications and tools and techniques for building a cyber resilient organization. Sunil Kanchi, Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President, UST Global said, “As part of our digital transformation journey, Microsoft is our key partner to not only enable and enhance our employees’ capabilities in being future-ready, but also in creating cutting-edge solutions for our global customers.”

Fortinet announced the findings of its latest Global Threat Landscape Report. The research reveals cybercriminals are evolving their attack methods to increase their success rates and to accelerate infections. While ransomware continues to impact in destructive ways, some cybercriminals now prefer hijacking systems and using them for cryptomining rather than holding them for ransom. Data indicates that cybercriminals are getting better and more sophisticated in their use of malware and leveraging newly

announced zero-day vulnerabilities to attack at speed and scale. While the number of exploit detections per firm dropped by 13% in Q1 of 2018, number of unique exploit detections grew by over 11%, and73% of companies experienced a severe exploit. The threat data in this quarter’s report reinforces many of the prediction trends unveiled by the Fortinet FortiGuard Labs global research team for 2018 demonstrating that the best defense against intelligent and automated threats is an integrated, broad, and automated security fabric.

About The Book The book aims to provide a reference guide for building blockchain applications shedding light on a neutral vision and architecture for blockchain, without getting into vendor specific details.

Key Features Book demonstrates the working of two widely used blockchain implementations - Ethereum and IBM Hyperledger Fabric respectively.

“Low latency solution backed by a SLA based service offers an appealing business

proposition to the trading community in India.”

ROBUST LOW LATENCY TELECOM INFRASTRUCTURE FOR INDIAN TRADERS

Tata Tele Business Services intros Ultra Lola and SLA – two industry first offerings for institutional stock traders to help them execute transactions at unmatchable speed and process market data in real time basis in an error free manner and with virtually zero latency.

T

echnological prowess in the financial trading market is moving to the next level wherein automated computer programs decide on the execution of a trade based on certain pre-defined instructions. Institutional stock trading firms are working towards processing their financial transaction in real time basis with virtually zero latency to gain the most from market data and processing of that information. For ages, the most important prerequisites for stock exchange have been high speed seamless network or internet with zero or minimal latency. This necessitates a robust low latency telecom infrastructure that can help meet the above objective. Keeping the above requirements in mind Tata Teleservices Business Services (TBS) has especially designed a low latency solution called

Ultra LOLA, for the institutional stock traders to help them execute transactions at unmatchable speed. Ultra LOLA solution provides robust low latency telecom infrastructure to traders helping them process market data in real time basis in an error free manner and with virtually zero latency. Ultra LOLA is a fresh approach to network design with the objective of curtailing network latency at each stage of workflow.

ITS KEY FEATURES ARE The solution provides faster connectivity between National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), with the shortest available distance possible in Tata Tele Business Services fiber path to handle traffic l It is redesigning of the network solution through replacement of traditional Ethernet over SDH (EoSDH) with specialized low latency l

switches l This solution provides no interim network elements between the switches at both ends, so as to minimize processing delays l The solution optimizes the latency from 10,000 micro seconds to 400 micro second which is 25 times faster connectivity than the conventional network speed. Low latency solution backed by a SLA based service offers an appealing business proposition to the trading community in India. Service Level Agreement (SLA) is an agreed upon measure of the average response and resolution times that the telecom operators provide to their customers. It is an optimum level of service where if the service provided is not optimal, the organization offers compensations to their customers. Tata Teleservices Business Services offers its customers 99.5% guaranteed service availability/uptime. In case of any non-compliance to provide a committed level of service, the customer will be provided with service credits as mentioned below: Tata Tele Business Services keeps doing innovations in products and services so that we can help our customers in their business endeavours. CIOs NEED TO ADOPT A PROACTIVE PRIVACY-BY-DESIGN APPROACH

With GDPR enforced and similar Indian Data Protection Regulations on the way, CIOs need to make tectonic shift in how they take care of their organizational data, adopting a culture of security and a proactive approach with a holistic design towards minimizing risk.

From a perspective of a business and its CIO, what exactly does GDPR compliance entail? The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a revolutionary change as far as data protection is concerned. To my mind this is a de-facto gold 36 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    JUNE 2018

standard globally and is one of the most advanced and strictest data protection regulations It has two fold objectives, one is that of accountability, where organizations are required to be more accountable by complying with GDPR and secondly enforcement – ensuring the member states rigor-

ously enforce GDPR, else any non-compliance to GDPR will cost the business a penalty of up to €20 million or 4% of annual turnover. This is surely a heavy cost to pay, besides the impact on the stock value, loss of customer trust and erosion of brand value. Hence, the key focus of a CIO is to ensure

SRIDHAR PINNAPUREDDY

CHAIRMAN AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CTRLS DATACENTERS

“Indian CIOs, CISOs should treat data with much more care. A pro-active approach is desired especially towards data gathering, data management, data

access, data storage, data retrieval and overall data protection.”

compliance. Now, to address as to what GDPR compliance entails, As per European Union General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR is a regulation that applies to ‘personal data’ meaning any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by reference to an identifier. This definition encompasses personal data, including name, identification number, location data or online identifier, reflecting changes in technology and the way organizations collect information about people. GDPR not only applies to organizations located within European Union but also organizations outside the European Union who offer services/goods to/or monitor the behavior of EU data subjects. How is GDPR implemented and enforced? What are the facets of information exchange that fall under GDPR umbrella? Implementing GDPR requires a cultural change. It will require businesses to transform the GDPR legal requirements into compliant and a sustainable organizational and operational behavior. The implementation should focus on the GDPR principles of lawfulness, accuracy, fairness and transparency, integrity/confidentiality, purpose limitation and storage limitation. Successful implementation of GDPR is based on factors such as organizational readiness (and active engagement of stakeholders, readying a team to address the GDPR compliance, educating the stakeholders across business functions, maintain relevant personal registries, procedural adherence and implementation of procedures aligned with GDPR guidelines, and maintain consistency and accountability in the long run. GDPR provides individuals eight rights - right of being informed, right to access, right to erasure, right to rectification, right to restrict processing,

right to data portability, right to object, and rights related to automated decision making. Detection of data breaches (if any) and immediate notification of the same within the defined period of 72 hours is one key aspect of the regulation. Appointing a skilled and seasoned Data Protection Officer (DPO) – either full time (or) otherwise can be a key to implantation. In case the CIO, CDO collaboration is very important to achieving the compliance objectives. How can CIOs and CISOs ensure good security practices to keep information safe at the organizational level? CIOs and CISOs need to collaborate to draw out policies and procedures for protecting data and minimizing risk. Prevention is better than cure goes the adage – hence it is important to have a risk matrix, build perimeter protection and threat prevention (through sandboxing), robust access management procedures, password management (2-step verification), effective vulnerability management, timely patch management, endpoint security, data loss prevention, threat scanners etc. It is important to enhance the skills of people through effective training to pro-actively address the challenges. All key data managed by the business including personal information of customers, their source, type, storage, retrieval, organizing and protecting is key to successful compliance. Deployment of tools such as SIEM, device encryption, anti-virus can address compliance. To protect infrastructure firewalls, WAF etc can be deployed. Threat modeling, forensics (malware), threat intelligence tools can be leveraged to avoid breaches. Lastly, enterprise data leakage and protection, data discovery, data encryption, application control(s), predictive and behavior analytics can play a key role in keeping the data protected.

How do you see GDPR and similar regulations formulate the information landscape going forward? We need IDPR (Indian Data Protection Regulation) for India similar to that of GDPR in European Union. Now, as you are aware we had several issues of data leakages from several social media sites in India. It is estimated that over half a million Indian Facebook users may have been affected in a recent data breach – this has truly compromised the privacy of the affected Indian citizens. Therefore, data protection is the key, however, it could have an impact on a country’s economy affecting the trading of services/ products especially in a digital economy – overtly stringent protection (or) insufficient protection – both can have adverse effect on the businesses, customer confidence and economy resulting in adverse impact on the economy. Secondly, a data protection regulation requires every business to comply with stringent guidelines by deploying processes, procedures, tools to ensure privacy of citizens in that country. What is the role of IT/ITES service provider in ensuring compliance for their customer organizations? Indian IT, ITeS companies operate in Europe – together they enjoy revenue of approximately $200 billion in the region. It is necessary all of them to stay compliant. As shared earlier, noncompliance to GDPR shall attract for a penalty of €20 million or 4% of global turnover, whichever is higher. Hence, they require to ensure hundred percent compliance to GDPR, and thereby protect revenues, business growth and above all customer trust and confidence. What is your advice to Indian CIOs and CISO’s in terms of ensuring their enterprise information security in the GDPR era? Indian CIOs, CISOs should treat data with much more care. It will require a tectonic shift. A proactive approach is desired especially towards data gathering, data management, data access, data storage, data retrieval and overall data protection. It requires a cultural change as mentioned earlier combined with stringent internal policies aligned with the enforced regulation(s). An eagle watch is required to ensure privacy protection of customers – more so in the digital world. Lastly, they ought to make people accountable, enforce stringent access controls, deploy risk mitigation tools, review customer personal privacy rights more deeply, and cobble the data collection policies carefully, foresee the unforeseeable data breaches and plan accordingly, and most importantly adopt a proactive privacy-by-design approach. s per Wikipedia, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union and the European Economic Area. It also addresses the export of personal data outside the EU and EEA. The GDPR aims primarily to give control to citizens and residents over their personal data and to simplify the regulatory environment for international business by unifying the regulation within the EU.

Superseding the Data Protection Directive, the regulation contains provisions and requirements pertaining to the processing of personally identifiable information of data subjects inside the European Union. Business processes that handle personal data must be built with privacy by design and by default, meaning that personal data must be stored using pseudonymization or full anonymity and use the highest-possible privacy settings by default, ensuring that the data is not available publicly without explicit consent, and cannot be used to identify a subject without additional information stored separately. No personal data may be processed unless it is done under a lawful basis specified by the regulation, or if the data controller or processor has received explicit, opt-in consent from the data’s owner. The business must allow this permission to be withdrawn at any time. A processor of personal data must clearly disclose what data is being collected and how is it stored, why it is being processed, how long it is being retained, and if it is being shared with any third parties. Users have the right to request a portable copy of the data collected by a processor in a common format, and the right to have their data erased under certain circumstances. Public authorities and businesses whose core activities centre around regular or systematic processing of personal data, are required to employ a data protection officer (DPO), who is responsible for managing compliance with the GDPR. Businesses must report any data breaches within 72 hours if they have an adverse effect on user privacy. Looking into the history of GDPR, it was adopted on the 14th of April 2016, and after a two-year transition period becomes enforceable on 25 May 2018. Because GDPR is a regulation and not a directive, it does not require national governments to pass any enabling legislation and is directly binding and applicable. The regulation applies if the data controller, processor, or the data subject is based in the EU. Under certain circumstances, the regulation also applies to organizations based outside the EU if they collect or process personal data of individuals located inside the EU.

IMPACT ON INDIA Although India has its own regulations governing data privacy and security, the focus now is fully on individual organizations’ ability to embrace GDPR without reservation. This is understandable given the cost impact of noncompliance by companies. In fact, one can safely assume that with this financial year onwards organizations will have a dedicated budget for regulatory compliance and data security. Organizations in India need to place compliance and data security JUNE 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 39

as a priority considering the cost for violating these privacy laws is about to get very expensive. GDPR can cost up to 20 million Euros or 4% of annual turnover, whichever is higher, for intentional or negligent violations. With those kinds of stakes, investing in compliance now is the only right move for a sustainable business model. Pragmatic compliance does not need to be an expensive exercise too. Expenses are relatively low if implemented with a common sense approach. Understanding the parameters of the applicable legislation is key to getting it right. India has evolved to become a technology hub equipped with deep expertise and GDPR could be an opportunity for Indian companies to stand out as leaders in providing privacy compliant services and solutions. WinMagic’s latest survey of nearly 500 IT Decision Makers (March 2018) found that a significant number of businesses were lacking in systems needed to meet the data management requirements of GDPR, continuous encryption of personally identifiable information across cloud and on-premises servers, and data breach monitoring. Srinivas Rao, Co-Founder and CEO, Aujas, says, “Digital economy can only flourish when you connect people, process, data and things in 40 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    JUNE 2018

an ethical, meaningful and secure way. GDPR is a step towards that. The toughest aspect of the GDPR is its guidelines to adhere to the security policies by organization handling EU data in and outside of the state. In order to be compliant, businesses must begin by introducing the correct security protocols in their journey to reaching GDPR compliance, including encryption, two-factor authentication and key management strategies to avoid severe legal, financial and reputational consequences.” Arun Balasubramanian, MD, Qlik India says, “The GDPR applies to companies in Europe (specifically those in the EU / EEA), so it will affect an Indian company which has a European office, or is marketing to European customers. In terms of readiness, companies have had a long time to prepare for GDPR, but as the GDPR bar is quite high, many are still struggling. GDPR is considered by many to be the highest global standard, and many countries have and will continue to strengthen their privacy laws in the near future.” The biggest challenge in meeting the requirements is understanding not only what personal data companies have in their multiple systems but also understanding the relationships of that data as well as who has access to it. This includes

monitoring the consent and tracking of who opted in or out in for campaigns, newsletters, or petitions. Despite the impending deadline, most APAC businesses which serve the EU market or have significant transactions that capture PII are still not fully prepared. According to the third biennial EY Global Forensic Data Analytics Survey by Ernst & Young (EY), only 12 per cent of firms in APAC have a GDPR compliance plan in place. “While GDPR affects private and public sector organizations handling PII, certain key industries will have heightened exposure as a result of the volumes of PII data they handle as well as the nature of their business,” said Rajesh Maurya, Regional Vice President, India & SAARC, Fortinet. “These include e-commercebased organizations operating internationally, as well as companies that serve significant numbers of tourists, visitors, or expatriates from the EU.” So, organizations preparing for GDPR must focus on reconfiguring their business processes and IT architectures, as well as reducing exposure of PII data. Enterprises in APAC should take a few necessary steps to accelerate GDPR compliance. They should engage a third-party firm to assess data protection practices and exposure to GDPR rules. Businesses should conduct a comprehensive data audit to understand data source, collection and processing. It should include documenting where GDPR impacted data is stored, how it is communicated between systems within the domain, and any external clouds or third-party data custodians. Further, they should determine how long it takes for data breach detection and mitigation and what is required to improve these processes to meet GDPR requirements. This element of the action plan should also include a detailed security assessment. George Chang, VP, APAC, Forcepoint, opines, “As the capacity to collect, store and analyze data for commercial purposes continue to grow exponentially, GDPR seeks to strengthen and unify personal data privacy and protection – putting people in control of their data and ensuring that businesses treat this data in a fair, transparent and secure manner. It’s no surprise that this seismic shift in the way we approach data security has caused a ripple effect across the globe, with many countries following suit and modernizing their own privacy and data protection laws.” He continues, “While many may be worried about the implications of a new regulatory era, it will create trust and provide good practices that will benefit both the individuals and the business. These laws collectively present a positive business opportunity, when approached in the right way.” Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India, said, “GDPR designates individual choice as a priority over everything else. It stands on the pil-

lars of mutual trust and respect, both of which are core to running any sustainable, ethical organization. It will govern how organizations within and outside the EU will collect, manage, process, and protect personal data while respecting individual choice.” It is being speculated that GDPR will spawn other regional entities to bring out their own versions of data protection. Although many countries maintain their own data privacy and security regulation, a blurred line separates the rights of the individual and organization. GDPR has removed this ambiguity in data management. Striking the right balance is a challenge to both businesses and regulators and GDPR comes along as a benchmark for future data privacy regulations because it is creating an ecosystem of compliance.

WHAT CAN ENTERPRISE IT TEAMS DO TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE GDPR warns businesses to collect information from customers only when needed. Even if you don’t need to comply with GDPR, this is simply a good practice. Your business saves money by having less data to protect and your customers

gain the privacy that many desire in the process. Businesses should provide stakeholders with password management tools and training. Companies should include assessment tools to give launching point for GDPR compliance including security, assessment, data governance & management tools and user consent & compliance tools. The communication of the Security Team should reach each and every member of the workforce to maintain awareness and criticality of GDPR. Organizations should initiate GDPR compliance programs with regular newsletters, events, and making privacy and security part of their employees’ personal objectives and performance review process. As Rahul Kumar, Country Manager, WinMagic India explains, “Companies in Europe are already setting aside an average of $1.4 million as part of their GDPR readiness effort. The scene is no different in the US, where companies are spending $1 – $10 million towards GDPR readiness. It is also possible that as organizations’ data pool continues to grow, evolve and move, they will start institutionalizing programs on data privacy, security and user experience.” On the individual level, employees need to take control of their privacy, keep their eyes open and not surrender sensitive information to

organizations that don’t need it. Businesses will now have to understand how much information they are giving out and what are they getting in exchange. Employees need to take their identity details seriously and not surrender such information without much thought. Rana Gupta, Vice President – APAC Sales, Identity and Data Protection, Gemalto deciphers the task for businesses, “Companies need to realize a breach is inevitable and key stakeholders, their customers, expect them to take reasonable measures to prevent breaches in the first place, and when that fails, to respond quickly and appropriately. In order to be compliant, a business must begin introducing the correct security protocols in their journey to reaching GDPR compliance, including encryption, two-factor authentication and key management strategies to avoid severe legal, financial and reputational consequences.” Over the past year or so, in the run up to the implementation deadline, NASSCOM and DSCI have been running various outreach programs for their members across major cities in India. The aim of these sessions has been to prepare and raise the awareness of the industry, especially SMEs and start-ups. data security directives since 1995, and GDPR is a graduated version of this existing framework. Comparing the older EU Directives with GDPR, the new regime provides relief and consistency but that comes with very stringent penalties on non-compliance. Most large companies are very well prepared due to economies of scale, however, the impact on SMEs and start-ups might be a cause for concern as they might struggle with several areas that render it costly for processors. These include appointing a data protection officer in organizations, the concept of privacy by design (encryption) and by default (processing the minimum amount of data), new privacy rights for individuals like the Right to Erasure and Right to Data Portability, and new consent rules which require consent for different activities from different stakeholders, including employees and customers.

THE WAY FORWARD AS PART OF THE GDPR REGIME In all fairness, complying with GDPR will go a long way in protecting the privacy and interests of all stakeholder communities linked to an organization. putting their customers at risk. Compliance will help in driving operational efficiencies, and costsavings. With strong data protection strategies in place, customers will place greater confidence in businesses, and businesses will minimize the all too common reputational and financial fall out of a breach. At its core, GDPR is not about individual or corporate rights but about gaining and maintaining consumer trust. Companies that understand the opportunities of using data within the regulatory framework stand to benefit significantly along with their customers and suppliers. Indian businesses today are battling severe issues of data protection that have large business implications on productivity and customer confidence. GDPR should be viewed as a necessary step towards addressing privacy issues as it now brings data protection obligations of businesses in its ambit. As per Shree Parthasarathy, Partner, Deloitte India, “Embracing GDPR with a strategic roadmap should be the immediate priority for Indian CIOs which includes creating awareness, training as well as setting up a dedicated data protection framework. GDPR can be a competitive advantage for India, if enterprises understand its relevance and further bring in a risk-based iterative secure and agile mechanism to their

business strategy.” This signals interesting times ahead and the businesses who plan properly, stay dedicated to the implementation of their plan and continuously evolve their strategy to adhere to the gold standards of GDPR will come out the winners. GDPR compliance should be perceived as a business advantage which can be a differentiator in the market. An entity compliant with GDPR requirements would definitely command more confidence from customers as compared to those who do not. In fact, GDPR presents a golden opportunity for India Inc. to drive thought leadership in the global market. The market will witness building up of expertise and capabilities and creation of new lines of advisory and consulting. Efficient GDPR framework will help businesses develop a market differentiator. The billion strong population of India is rapidly digitizing their ways and proliferating their information online for the first time. Businesses have a social responsibility of protecting their vulnerabilities and cannot compromise with customer information. In 2017, The Supreme Court of India reassured the government’s commitment to citizen privacy, declaring it as a fundamental right. Now the onus is upon the industry to reinforce the information security infrastructure of India Inc.

upply Chains run and rule the world. It can be argued that supply chain have been vital components of human societies for ages and has been the pipeline which has supported progress. By definition, a supply chain is a system of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to customer. It encompasses the entire process of procuring the raw materials, bringing the load to the operational lines, and further transporting the final product to the customer. With the world embracing the Digital way going forward, enterprise supply chains are transforming from structured, rigid processes to dynamic, flexible operations with real time visibility and control. advent and introduction of digital technologies like IoT, Cloud, AI and Big Data Analytics. Enterprises today are focusing on eradicating the gaps in their supply chains and optimizing them to in turn improve margins, enable agility and reduce risk. Real time and end to end visibility is helping organizations have greater control across the entire supply chain. The surge in information and with it BI and Analytics is enabling businesses to identify gaps and rectify them in real time.

CURRENT SUPPLY CHAIN LANDSCAPE AND CHALLENGES Any business relies heavily on its supply chain to keep the processes moving. An optimized supply chain is a critical differentiator in the market today. There are a number of common challenges businesses across the world face with respect to supply chain management. Globalization has

presented critical supply chain management challenges to enterprises. Growing markets and hunt for cheaper production costs have made several companies outsource aspects like manufacturing and retail. This leads to an extended supply chain that isn’t completely under control. Fast changing market trends and customer preferences have brought out shorter product lifecycles and rapid change in products come coupled with the problem of tampering the supply chain. Compliance poses another major problem as multinational companies with massive supply chains often fail to keep a check on little frauds in between and have a tough job accounting the process at each step. Digitization of the Supply Chain promises to alleviate all of these issues, giving organizations end to end visibility, real time control and transparency in their supply chain operations. With the customer being at the forefront of any business decision, companies have moved away for a supply driven business towards a demand driven business, constantly exploring ways to reduce inventory cost, reduce product cycle time and move product quickly and cost effectively. of the important sectors across worldwide. This transformation is rooted in the rapidly increasing pace of doing business. This has given rise to digital supply chains which remove focus from process and structure to collaboration, automation, analytics and flexibility. As Arindam Singha Roy puts it, “Supply Chain Management with IT services has completely changed the outlook of how companies manage their supply Chain and how they maintain their collaborative relationships with their suppliers and satisfy the needs of their customers.” Supply chain arguably is the most critical part of any manufacturing organization. Businesses have to constantly maintain the Supply vs. Demand ratio managing and maintaining just in time requirements. The face of the supply chain has changed a lot over the last decade with the help of technology like SAP, MS Dynamics etc. As Arvind Kumar opines, “In early 2000s, we needed to plan for a quarter in advance to fulfill our daily production requirements and fulfillment ratio, stock management, and vendor / supplier management. Managing warehouses and maintaining minimum stock and relevant stock inventory involved great effort and manpower.”

RAVINDER ARORA,

“The dynamism in technology products including smartphones, GPS devices, tablets and similar

mobile devices has seen a steady rise in portable supply chain technology which is invaluable in monitoring the supply chains wirelessly.”

He continues, “But nowadays, we always work on minimum stock management and achieving JIT requirements with the help of Technology and inventory is available on just a click away. Technology isn’t just streamlining Supply chain processes but also helping resource utilization.” For the manufacturing industry, this signals a paradigm shift. As Milan Kumar, Global CIO, WABCO explains, “Technological progress has transformed supply chains from a staid cycle to a highly dynamic, interoperable system that can easily and immediately accommodate ecosystem partners and bring about an optimal evolution over time. There has been a shift from linear supply chains to a networked, dynamic system of supply operations which will change the course of competition in the manufacturing industry.”

TECHNOLOGIES INFLUENCING THE TRANSFORMATION Supply Chain operations drastically improved in the twenty first century with basic automation and analytics becoming household across industries. This transformation was further fuelled by widespread adoption of applications like ERP. Now with the influx of Digital Technologies, the

through reduction of errors; greater customer satisfaction, flexibility, lesser disruptions and better informed decision making in impromptu scenarios. The technological empowerment of the supply chain is perhaps the biggest boon for the manager. As veteran CIO Parveen Kumar Sharma puts it, “The flexibility it offers to logistic managers in tracking and monitoring the entire supply chain enables decisions on the fly which averts disruptions in the supply chain.” Arvind Kumar, who head IT for an organization dealing with food products with short lifecycles sees unprecedented perks of a digital supply chain, “We have a complete and holistic over view of our business along with forecasting and better funds management via better supply chain management. GPS navigation enables us to track our shipment live and avoid any unforeseen delays. IoT is helping us maintain precise hygiene, temperature, and nutrition levels during transportation.” IoT allows collection and evaluation of data which when coupled with Analytics enables supply chain managers to make perfect predictions of demand, in turn helping in framing accurate planning strategies. a suitable degree of centralization aimed at reducing process costs like manual labor and physical reporting. This converts into better process quality and productivity at the same time helping central master data management to avoid discrepancies. Milan Kumar who is the Global CIO at WABCO opines, “Digitizing the supply chain results in a more forward-looking approach and establishes a highly interconnected system allowing more connections and sharing of data across networks. This data allows creation of advanced analytics opportunities and the application of the data to augmented reality, cloud-based tracking and customer self-service opportunities.” With more information at disposal than ever before and connectivity at its best, helps remove communication silos enabling information to be gathered and communicated in real-time. This extensive information and easy collaboration leads to agility and effectiveness. “A successful digital supply chain has a top-bottom approach,” explains Arindham Singha Roy, “It helps eradicate functional silos, augment communication and meet targets. Technologies such as RFID, sensors, and GPS help organizations change their hybrid supply chain style into flexible digital models, giving a much needed organizational elasticity in

a rapid and volatile market.” Any technology always comes with certain quantifiable benefits and the same is true with a digital supply chain. As veteran IT Leader Sanjeev Kumar explains, “The benefits are in all areas right from Accurate Planning and inbound-outbound quantity scheduling; cost optimization to an extent of 6 %, time optimization on an average 10%, improved customer service ranging from 70% to 90%; route and delivery visibility in real time, no pilferage and no dead freight giving 1-2% gain here, no inaccurate billing and timely payment to transporters. Moreover it has made entire supply chain digital, transparent and trust worthy.” Probably no new concept is a hit till it adds value in terms of security. Digital supply chain ensures that data on exchanges like invoice timing and approval status are stored in the cloud keeping confidential financial information will protected.

ENTERPRISE PROJECTS AND DEPLOYMENTS Supply Chain transformation technologies are today being used in processes across diverse verticals right from the critical ones like BFSI, Manufacturing, Healthcare and Government, to FMCG, Education and Retail. Arvind Kumar, Head IT at Elior Catering India is investing big time in transforming the supply chain at his organization, “We are in process to rollout for our food manufacturing processes which will help us in not only managing our supply chain but also our food production; sales and distribution processes. In the education sector, supply chain technologies are being deployed to streamline and simplify labor intensive processes like Examinations, stationary supplies and curriculum collaboration. Parveen Kumar Sharma, CTO for ICAI comments, “We are using CDS portal for the supply of student’s course material and monitoring the complete cycle from order to delivery of study material.” Ravinder Arora explains how projects like Transport Management Software are being used to enable centralized management, “It is now possible to have such a panel in your mobile device where you can organize your inventory data, manage shipping, monitor distribution and create an electronic bill of landing, all in the comfort of your office or while on the go. This enhances customer experience and reduces errors in the entire process.” Blockchain is a remarkable concept that is being heavily explored for use cases and applications in the supply chain domain. Arindham Singha Roy of East India Udyog explains, “We are planning to do pilot on leveraging blockchain in Supply Chain as physical, financial, and digital

information will be brought together in one platform to reveal sources of value leakage — from everyday inefficiencies to fraud and abuse — and helps us to adopt new strategies to combat them.” Blockchains have the ability to resolve transparency and traceability issues in processes. Moving a product from supplier to customer requires people, resources, knowledge, processes, and financial transactions. It becomes complicated to display the full picture of a large supply chain system to everyone involved. Information is distributed to various people at various times, and this data is typically stored in multiple locations which can be made accessible by implementing blockchain based solutions.

FUTURE OF THE ENTERPRISE SUPPLY CHAIN In the near future, traditional supply chains will shift from being merely a support entity to a decision-making entity. Coupled with Big Data and Cloud Computing, digitizing the supply chain will empower companies with greater data gathering, reporting, and analytics capabilities. Companies will be able to review large amounts of data in real time to not only create better demand planning strategies but also share data in the moment with other crucial players in the supply network to avoid bottlenecks or disruptions at different stages in the planning and production process. For the next 10 years, emerging supply chain roles will reflect a focus on profitability and performance improvement, as well as strong analytical skills that can leverage the algorithms and advanced simulations powered by AI and prescriptive analytics to create new value for the business. These roles will include process improvement managers, business development leads, risk managers and data scientists. The Supply Chain will be completely JIT, an initiation already executed by e-commerce companies for on demand supply from anywhere to everywhere and will lead to on demand manufacturing of products with almost zero stock management. AI is expected to be used in a big way in the SCM. Advanced AI solutions have numerous

applications in the supply chain including gesture recognition solutions in the procurement process, automated warehousing, and autonomous vehicles designed to navigate without human input. Improved speed, dynamics and resiliency of the supply chain operations leading to greater customer responsiveness will count for higher revenue and better market valuation. The major trends that will influence investment in supply chain technologies are customer satisfaction by optimized services, product shelf life, and analytical tools signaling increased focus on B2C in comparison to B2B. Impact of RPA, IoT, ML, Mobility and Mobile App enablement with real-time Cloud based analytics will enable analysis and constant fine tuning of the enterprise supply chain. The scope of value addition through supply chain transformation is rapidly increasing with newer technologies and use cases coming up every day. A digitized supply chain promises a great step towards better business in future but the quality of skills and effort required and deployed will ultimately be the key success differentiator for enterprises moving forward. IT/ITES companies need to have business agility to respond to the changing market dynamics and most of these companies are investing in technologies that can drive the differentiation.

STILL A BUZZWORD? A lot has been said about digital transformation, with varying opinions on what it truly means and why enterprises should care about it to drive business value. Digital transformation is nothing but a comprehensive change in attitude that enables businesses to remain relevant and competitive by keeping up with the fast-changing industry landscape, while also helping to retain existing customers and attract new ones. While the adoption of new technology, of course, forms part of this, it also involves a significant cultural shift which will have an impact on everyone in the workplace. Led by the CIOs, digital transformation is enabling businesses to create new revenue sources, transform their business models, and remain agile.

JOURNEY IN THE IT SECTOR

Companies should first establish the digital infrastructure that is required to test the pilot projects. 52 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD    JUNE 2018

These projects are mainly in the area of building intelligent ERP or using cognitive technologies to gather predictive business insights or setting up an IoT infrastructure. The three main areas of digital transformation are setting up a foundation infrastructure, revamping traditional systems and use of emerging technologies. At an organizational level, not all IT/ITES enterprises are early adopters of digital transformation. It needs a top-down approach. A CEO needs to be committed to investing in digital transformation projects to drive competitive advantage by attracting and retaining the right talent. EMBRAC-

ING CHANGE

The key to the success of a digital transformation program hinges on its strategy. As companies adopt modernized technologies such as IoT, Big data, cloud, and mobility, securing the data and managing risks become pertinent. Companies that are on a digital transformation journey must

make cyber-security a top priority. It is essential to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data in all these contexts—on premises, in the cloud, and in hybrid environments. Following are the few aspects that can help companies embrace digital change internally: l Providing requisite training to the CIO about the changes digital technologies can bring to the business. l Bringing paradigm shift in the thinking process within the IT team considering new ways of building infra and systems. l Building strategy for cloud-native applications and creating architecture, learning and utilizing open source technologies for faster innovation and cost optimization. l Creating bi-model team structure, rolling out DevSecOps &CI/CD (Continuous integration/Continuous development/deployment) methodology. Re-looking the relevance of the existing vendor relationships and identifying and developing new strategic relationships with digital startups and giants. Enterprises need to build a ‘Think Digital’ culture, where every employee is passionately curious about the digital future and every leader is profoundly uncomfortable with the status-quo. Companies with a futuristic vision should take a comprehensive view of their transformational strengths and weaknesses vis-à-vis technology adoption. They need an end-to-end transformation mechanism to streamline operations, develop new businesses that serve new customer demands, and eliminate those operations that don’t align with their organizational goals. Transformation on such a scale is a long process, involving several challenges. But, at the same time, it will also open up unprecedented opportunities.

“Although, the market for cobots is increasing fast, there is still a long way to go and adoptions depend on the range of problems it can resolve for multivariety of users and industries.”

COBOTS TAKING HUMAN-ROBOT INTERACTION TO THE NEXT LEVEL

A cobot or a collaborative robot is a robot intended to physically interact with humans in a shared workspace. This is in contrast with other robots, designed to operate autonomously or with limited guidance, which is what most industrial robots were up until the decades.

C

OBOT, is a collaborative robot that works alongside humans better than traditional robots. It interacts with humans, save time and money. Industrial robots have been around for decades, but real cobots developed on Denmark universal robotic system. Globally, they are used in neurosurgery, bartending, physiotherapy, filmmaking and many industries. Today, there are about 400 UR cobots in India, across sectors, especially automobile and auto-components, FMCG and Electronics industries. Many large companies are going to buy robots because they have no choice. Small and medium based enterprises targeting for cobots.

ROBOT VS COBOT: Partnering in human-machine teams: Classic industry robots are powerhouses that carry

out their work following a fixed program without regard for people working around them. Accidents are prevented using fences and cages. Cobots, however, are specifically designed to work together with people, not just for them. Instead of being caged, they work in a cooperative environment and assist with complex tasks that cannot be fully automated. For example, they can hand components to human co-workers, who execute the more precise assembly or quality control tasks. Cobots are very easy to program. Unlike traditional industrial robots, which require specialized programming skills, some cobot models even learn independently. Other systems can be given work instructions without coding, using a graphic user interface. Employees can thus flexibly reprogram cobots and use them for a variety of tasks.

Usable anywhere: Not only are cobots easy to reprogram, they are also relatively easy to move and utilize at other points on the production chain. Most cobots can be mounted on any surface – horizontal, vertical, on the ceiling. And they are often light enough to be carried by just one person. Any industries with 100 percent automation required robots with sophisticated sensors, cameras and security systems; which would be an expensive proposition options. While, on the other hand Cobots emphasise on limited or partial automation features where no need of sensors to perform the job; also less costly too. The cost difference between robots and cobots is huge, and that’s why this is targeting more towards SME enterprises. The need for product customisation, cost and flexibility are driving the growth of cobots. Cobots cannot execute any task on its own but has to be embedded and engineered with specific multi-platform applications. Cobots are currently used by few bank institutions. Companies have also been able to deploy their expensive manpower’s to work towards strategically than operational function. Robots having market presence of around 40$billions, whereas cobots having only 1$ billion by coming next year. Although, the market for cobots is increasing with a fast pace of 65% CAGR- there is still a long way to go and become a mainstream for enterprise performances. Cobot adoptions fully depend on the range of problems it can resolve for multi-variety of users and industries. Cobots will be helping hands to humans. Cobots are once again one of the most exciting trends at HANNOVER MESSE. Such as at the flagship trade fair Industrial Automation where opportunities from the latest automation solutions are on display. JUNE 2018    ENTERPRISE IT WORLD 53
