IceWarp Expands its Market Presence with Swan Solutions
Sophos Launches Managed Threat Response Service Sophos has launched Managed Threat Response (MTR), a fully managed threat hunting, detection and response service. The re-sellable service provides organizations with a dedicated 24/7 security team to neutralize the most sophisticated and complex threats. These types of threats include active attackers leveraging fileless attacks and administrator tools such as PowerShell to escalate privileges, exfiltrate data and spread laterally, as explained in the SophosLabs Uncut article on Lemon_Duck PowerShell malware. Attacks like these are difficult to detect since they involve an active adversary using legitimate tools for nefarious purposes, and Managed Threat Response helps eliminate this threat. “Cybercriminals are adapting their methods and increasingly

launching hybrid attacks that combine automation with interactive human ingenuity to more effectively evade detection. Once they gain a foothold, they’ll employ ‘living off the land’ techniques and other deceptive methods requiring human interaction to discover and disrupt their attacks. For the most part, other MDR services simply notify customers of potential threats and then leave it up to them to manage things from there. Sophos MTR not only augments internal teams with additional threat intelligence, unparalleled product expertise, and around-the-clock coverage, but also gives customers the option of having a highly trained team of response experts take targeted actions on their behalf to neutralize even the most sophisticated threats,” said Joe Levy, Chief Technology Officer, Sophos.
IceWarp has tied-up with Swan Solutions, a professionally managed company that provides end-to-end Information Technology solutions for medium and large business enterprises. Present across 50 countries, IceWarp has already acquired more than 900 customers in India in last 5 years. With its current partnership in action the company aims to gain a stronger understanding of their customers while providing seamless and elite experience. Swan solutions has a well-established market in India, IceWarp intends to leverage this existing relationship of Swan to achieve business from the Indian market. Swan Solutions has entered into a Gold partnership with IceWarp and now has a target of 50,000 mailboxes to add up to the market. Channelling through Mumbai, IceWarp uses technology — including hardware, software, services and cloud solutions — to help customers resolve their most complicated IT needs. Swan customer profile has been developed over the years to include successful, IT-savvy companies across all industry verticals. CIO500: KUMBH OF CIOs Chitranjan Kesari, CEO, Netlynx Technologies writes about his experience at the CIO 500 Conclave & Awards 2019.
CHITRANJAN KESARI CEO, Netlynx Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
In the hands of the digital CIO’s, the awakening of the ecstatic culture of the Sangam (Novotel) is on and we from Netlynx Technologies Pvt. Ltd. wish all the Winners a Happy New year and Wish this 2020 comes as Digital Year with more knowledge and wealth to come. What a date 13 to 15 December 2019! We have successfully celebrated Kumbh of CIOs in Hotel Pullman Novotel, Aerocity, New Delhi.
Everywhere all are talking about Digital Transformation, lots of technical discussions and partner-driven lucky draws make the environment very happy. The rocking band of Aki Kumar made the CIOs dance and party. A true platform for CIOs, we can say that our Prayagraj Ardh Kumbh Mela, 2019 is the Ardh Kumbh Mela, but CIO’s Kumbh Mela is the full Kumbh fair this year. Our Novotel Hotel, New Delhi is our Triveni Sangam, and our saints are our beloved CIOs. This is one of the best times in Indian history that all CIO’s are on one platform discussing their issues and pain points with fellow CIOs and partners. For Partners also, this is one of the platforms that almost 40+ partners are available for all segments and they also learned from each other and collected lots of business opportunities from CIOs. My personal experience after CEO position in Netlynx has given me lots of opportunities to learn and network for future business. I have learned how our company, Netlynx is different from others, there are IT companies and then there are integrated IT enterprises that redefine the very essence of the word ‘Service’. Netlynx is one such entity that has given a completely new meaning to customer needs. No wonder then we are tagged as a leading cloud & IT infrastructure services company. Incidentally, we provide services to some of the top Indian and global organizations across several industry verticals and industries. A true Ashirwad from all CIOs is required to make this mission successful, to save cost and improve service. CIOs’ Mela planned one year back by Sanjay and his team and well-executed on time like booking of Air travel, Hotel, Trophy,
and partners. Well organized and well planned. Several panel discussions, hot topics like changing role of CIOs’, Data centre and growth of cloud, Future of emerging technology, CEO vs CIO, Deep Learning, Data Security, Digital transformation in Bank/Manufacturing/ Healthcare, etc. A well-managed, organized and what else, Yoga, Cricket and Golf and many more activities. I am very impressed with the Band of Aki Kumar from USA, very innovative. We CIOs and Partners danced, giving us the opportunity to stay awake up till 2 am night to celebrate our success. Hats off to Enterprise IT World team, Sanjay, Sanjeev, Pooja, Nidhi etc, who tirelessly worked 24/7 to make this happen and support from our partners. Not even a single incident happened to dampen the feelings, everybody was happy. First time in the history of CIOs’ event that more than 100+ Lucky draws were taken out, some CIOs won 3-4 gifts, some won Apple watches and BOSE headphones, and many more goodies. I can say that everybody looks like a Digital Baba, a centre of attraction at Novotel, New Delhi. I have met with some of the innovative companies like Techchef, HOLM Security, Graftronics, IceWarp and many more. In the hands of the digital CIO’s, the awakening of the ecstatic culture of the Sangam (Novotel) is on and we from Netlynx Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Wish all the Winners a Happy New year and Wish this 2020 comes as Digital Year with more knowledge and wealth to come.

n an era when businesses are turning to hybrid cloud as a crucial stage in their Digital Transformation journey, Rajesh Ramnani, Regional Director – Converged Platforms, Dell Technologies, in his keynote address at the CIO 500 Conclave & Awards 2019, asserts the need to automate the IT infrastructure. Speaking for the cause of automation, Rajesh Ramnani talks about how it can be the key to monitoring and governing the infrastructure and its consumption by different departments. How Can You Make Your IT Infrastructure More Automated? The journey begins with deciding where a business wants its applications to reside. While some applications are pre-disposed to be put into the public cloud like Amazon or Azure, certain other applications require re-factoring before they can be a part of the new hybrid cloud infrastructure. “There won’t be just a private cloud infrastructure or a private cloud infrastructure to boost your business applications. What we have seen is that multiple public
clouds and a few private clouds and the idea is to juggle the workload between one or the other. With VMWare and Dell EMC, Dell offers the Dell Technologies Cloud. Dell EMC is for Infrastructure and VMWare is for virtualization and cloud delivery. So, we put them together to deliver a strategy called Dell Technologies Cloud,” explains Rajesh Ramnani. Mapping out the process for the same, he says, “We start out with a consistent infrastructure layer. The infrastructure layer delivers applications either in the private cloud environment or public cloud. At the end of the day you have to be the user of this infrastructure, so that you are able to understand how much is being consumed by which department and at what point in time.” “So, this layer does a request automation which informs you the best way to put your applications whether it is on the public cloud or the private cloud. At the same time it allows you to govern the whole system in terms of monitoring the user info. So, at any point, the leader or the CEO has the visibility of how much of the infrastructure layer is being consumed by each department.”

GUEST SPEAKER // CIO500 CONCLAVE
CIO IN THE MIDST OF DIGITAL DISRUPTION In his address, Rohit Adlakha from Wipro Holmes speaks about the digital disruption in the industry and how CIOs need to reposition themselves within the changing scenario.
T
he industries today are on a journey of absolute disruption and digital transformation triggered by new-age technologies like AI, ML, Edge Computing, Automation, etc. It is being referred to as the 4th industrial revolution. The revolution has penetrated the industries in such a way that all companies are going through their individual digital and AI journeys. “People often ask me what I mean by Digital. In my view digital is all about speed, agility, breaking down the siloes, looking at design thinking, looking at user experience, etc,” said Rohit Adlakha. Delivering his guest knowledge session on the first day of CIO 500 Conclave & Awards 2019, Rohit Adlakha from Wipro Holmes spoke about the Digital Disruption and the CIO’s position within it. Rohit Adlakha occupies the positions of Chief Digital Officer, Chief Information Officer, Chief Automation and AI Officer and Chief Experience Officer at Wipro Holmes. “AI has taken over the entire world. The fact is that today AI has become the biggest digital disrupter in the industry. It is not just humans that a CIO needs to manage, but they also have to manage bots, scripts and software. And when AI sits in the Cloud, especially public cloud, imagine what happens to security, governance and compliance and how do you measure them? In this world of Amazon and Uber, everyone is talking about anytime, anywhere, any device, any network access. What does that mean?” asks Rohit. He goes on to say that in the context of an individual enterprise, when people talk about the employees in the company, it is potentially about all connected devices within that enterprise. So, what is the role of IT there? Is
it only about the Data centre? Is it only the application landscape? Is it the hybrid cloud? Is it the end users? Or is it about managing all the connected devices within the company? Sharing his experience Rohit says, “Our own estimate within Wipro is that these number of connected devices will be a much greater number than the number of employees we have. We have mobile handsets ranging from Android to iOS, We have operating systems which are Microsoft, Chrome, iOS. We have devices which could be HP, Dell, IBM, Lenovo, Apple. We have browsers which range from Chrome to Internet Explorers to Bing. We have communication happening through email which could be on Google Suite or on Microsoft Outlook. Then we have call conferencing capabilities from Cisco and Microsoft. Imagine CIOs having to manage this entire complexity where we can pick up our choice of in terms of any combinations and each of these combinations could be upto 100. Imagine the complexities that CIOs have to manage.” A key factor of this digital disruption is that the culture of users is changing dramatically. People are talking about open offices, home offices and virtual offices. The fact is that the workforce has become more culturally diverse. By 2025, 75% of the workforce will be millennials. Cloud sourcing is going to be big. It is estimated that in the US, about 33% of the workforce is going to be outsourced or freelancers. It is easier to manage people in a room using one common wifi network and a common security policy. But how do you take care of people who are distributed across different spaces? So, the role of the CIO is going to change in terms of culture, types of users, types of bots, and it is going to become very complex, explains Rohit Adlakha.
Rohit simplifies the scenario with the example of Amazon. Their user interface is intuitive, everything is based on service based architecture and the entire self help-UI is so simplistic that 99% of the time, the customers need not have to reach a human. That is the exact experience people are looking at within the enterprise. So, user experience and operational security is going to be the key in this complex world. “CIOs have to make sure that the business and IT alignment is there, which means shifting from operations to business, looking at the different sets of parameters. For instance, if you have onboarding new employees, can you give them a laptop, a user id password, access privileges, IT badge and everything else the minute that they join? So, the business and IT alignment, driving the company’s revenues and profitability is how the CIO should reposition themselves,” says Rohit. Commenting on the challenges faced by the CIOs, Rohit says, “It is about security and trust. There is a natural connection between Cloud and Edge. It is looking at Zero Trust which is your identity, managing of assets and doing segmentation rather than having local networks. So, that every transaction you do, checking your email, logging on your laptop, whatever communication may happen, should happen with security and trust – that is the challenge a CIO has to tackle.” Concluding his address, Rohit Adlakha asserts, “The pride of the CIO function is in answering how transformative and disruptive can you be. The whole idea is to become disruptive, innovative, and translating employee productivity and uptime into profits for the company. That is the differentiation that a CIO brings. And that is why the challenging task for a CIO is to constantly reinvent yourself.” JANUARY 2020 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD

NO DEMOCRACY, NO RIGHT CAPITALISM HAS SURVIVED ON LARGE INDUSTRIES: RAVINDER SINGH BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM
In his keynote address on Digital Compassion, Ravinder Singh CIO, (Tata SIA Airlines - Vistara), speaks about how the Indian education system is compassionate to give you bread and butter. But it is not compassionate to enable students so that they can create more jobs. He went on to suggest how this problem can be solved.
T
he fact is that the hardware and software that we have in this particular country, is actually not paying for this particular country. No democracy, no right capitalism has survived on large industries. We have to go back to the space of creating more
employment. Go to the villages, bring smart satellites, transmit internet to remote villages and germinate as many start-ups as you can. In that space, let them create jobs. Re-define employment to make it a mix of creativity and productivity both. Use Blockchain to create a node for each and every citizen so that even minority voice is
noted at least if not agreed upon. Build locally, quickly and cohesively in this country. Find small spaces in your large companies where you can do genuine experimentation. Find, build and train from within your own locality. That is the only way we can redefine employment in this country.

I.C.E: PARAMETERS FOR SELECTING THE RIGHT TOOLS Rajalakshmi Srinivasan, Product Manager, Evangelist, Site24x7, in her keynote address on ‘Adoption, Ability and Awareness to Survive and Thrive’ elaborates on the nature of the technology adoption that a business should strive towards.
BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM
W
ith new businesses coming up in India every year, the market out there is getting increasingly competitive. All these businesses are in different stages of digital transformation. So, when you are embracing technology in your business, what should you focus on? Is it merely about implementing technology or is it more inclined towards adding value to it? Rajalakshmi Srinivasan, Product Manager, Evangelist, Site24x7, in her keynote address on ‘Adoption, Ability and Awareness to Survive and Thrive’ elaborates on the nature of the technology adoption that a business should strive towards. “While implementing technology, don’t be obsessed with using technology in a breakthrough and pioneering way, instead see how you can bridge the past and the future. Look back as well as look forward and try to balance the old and the new. There are a lot of businesses that can be born where we come from. Take heritage along in your business and you will be able to give true value addition to your end users,” says Rajalakshmi Srinivasan. The decision is between automating for the sake of increasing the speed, or completely re-imagining the way business operations are undertaken? What are the steps in a typical business application? First, the activity in question has to be modelled, a blueprint has to be designed, a chart has to be constructed of what all is to be done, achieving a standard, reducing the errors in the system, so that scaling up becomes a possibility and more activities can be taken up. So, this is a typical model. But workflow cannot be blindly automated. Ques-
tions are to be asked if this is really needed. Can some steps be avoided? Rajalakshmi quotes Donald Knuth, Premature optimization is the root of all evil. “Think through if your automation or optimization is really needed. Don’t go on with it just because everybody else is doing it that will only create problems for your business,” explained Rajalakshmi. When a business selects the tools that are to be used, you have to choose between multiple lonesome tigers or a pack of wolves which work together. “Working together is important rather than piecemeal technologies,” says Rajalakshmi. In a survey she conducted across different organizations, she asked how companies use technology to run their business. The pattern discerned was that businesses selected the best product in the market for the solution they were looking for. And they ended up having different vendors for different applications. But in order to make sense of the data a business has collected through different sources, they need to have it all at a single console. Otherwise, each application from a different vendor runs with a different direction, with no end view in sight. So, there is a need to be careful in choosing a vendor as per the business requirements. “The success of a set of tools does not depend on how well they work. it only depends on how well they work together. So, you have to choose a tool that has these capabilities,” advises Rajalakshmi. What are we targeting to do? A business has to keep tabs on who is doing what on the data. Log and audit record is important for business laws and from the compliance perspective. In order to survive in the
market that is coming up with compliances for governance, it is very important for a business to log and record everything that is being done. It is also important for businesses to plan for AI. How to face the customers, competitors or the internal users of the product within the organization? For any organization, when they have to use a technology, it is not like they just purchase a technology, build on it and use it. It is not like that. Rajalakshmi lists down the parameters businesses need to take into account to select the right tool for their business. She calls it, ICE. Integration Capabilities – When a business gets a new tool, they already have an old tool in place. For them to be able to import or export the data they should have integration capabilities. So, they can have a wholesome view of the data to draw meaningful insights from. Therefore, integration is important. Customization – A business might want to add or remove certain aspects of the tool as per their requirement and convenience, so there must be options for customization in the products or tools that they are using, so customization becomes a necessity. Extension – A business might want to extract the APIs or write your own modules. So, the tool must have the capability of extension as well so that they can re-write the modules. ICE, therefore, becomes a key parameter when it comes to selecting a particular tool from a variety of options available in the market. It is all about making an informed, careful decision that suits the requirements of the business.

FUELLING INNOVATION WITH CLOUD In the discourse on innovation in Cloud within the enterprise, Aju Sebastian, IBM Cloud Platform Leader, IBM ISA, maps out the three things that stand out the most, in his keynote address at the CIO 500 Conclave & Awards 2019.
BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM
I
n today’s cloud-conscious age, industries are exploring different ways to use cloud with their Digital Transformation journeys. From running applications, new workloads, storing data, accessing different kinds of data, etc. Cloud is being deployed everywhere. Enterprises are all in various stages of success in terms of how they are able to leverage the cloud and amalgamate that with their journey to innovate for their enterprises. In the discourse on innovation in Cloud within the enterprise, Aju Sebastian, IBM Cloud Platform Leader, IBM ISA, maps out the three things that stand out the most. Innovation: The ability to innovate with the latest technology that is available. Cloud has brought new-age technologies like AI and ML far closer to the enterprise than they have been ever before. It is easier for enterprises to consume, to use it to derive insights and deliver outcomes. It has also enterprises to access multiple types of data which was not possible earlier in organizations with on-premise environment. Accessibility: Cloud has given the ability to access one’s own enterprise data and map that with external data. Bringing the different data sources together, it has enabled CIOs to drive business outcomes out of it. Options: Cloud has also given ability to have the options and choices on where an enterprise wants to run its different workloads. Earlier they were stuck with a standard set of frameworks that existed with the on-premise data centres. But with different cloud service providers available to run data enterprises are able to choose the most optimal
28 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD JANUARY 2020
place to run their workload irrespective of where that destination lies - on-premise data centre, cloud provider, or a hybrid situation. In spite of this, there is still a far way to go before absolute Cloud adoption can be achieved across enterprises. Aju Sebastian, IBM Cloud Platform Leader, IBM ISA says, “Yet, we see that only 20% of the enterprise workloads have moved on to the cloud. This is big opportunity. There is about 80% of the enterprise workload still sitting in the siloed environment. It means that innovation that we can drive out of those workloads is lost.” Looking at the challenges that are causing the slowness of the movement to the Cloud, explains how some workflow is still restricted to the siloed environment. “Some of these applications have unique characteristics which bind them to a specific destination from, perhaps the security point of view, most likely to an on-premise destination. These workloads are very uniquely and optimally positioned on the on-premise environment. And it becomes very difficult to move that,” says Aju Sebastian. When it comes to moving those applications on to the Cloud, which in itself is a feat, the CIOs are again faced by certain challenges in the course of dealing with multiple cloud environments. Earlier we used to have the challenge of managing your on premise data centres, but now with shadow IT and the kind of innovation that is happening, there is penetration of cloud at a high level within the organization. And with multiple clouds coming into the picture, the management of all these clouds simultaneously and the workloads being run on them, is what the challenge for the CIO is.

CIO500 CONCLAVE // INDUSTRY PRESENTATION
AJAY YADAV, COUNTRY HEAD, MEDIA AGILITY.
The problem with moving to the Cloud is deciding on where to start, how to start and what all to move to the cloud. The biggest challenge is
monitoring technology advances and building the new stack. While we can easily adopt cloud, what’s important is how quickly we can do this. We need to accelerate whatever we are doing. Time to market is more important. Also, with the cloud, you need a completely different skill set. CIOs are struggling to get cloud native resources. Rather than building a stack, you can directly use managed services, you can make a predictive technology stack and get transparency and fast result that impacts your bottom line
GOOGLE STANDS OUT IN THE CLOUD MARKET Media Agility works as an extended arm taking out Google Cloud technologies to different verticals and helping the businesses to adopt these technologies. In his presentation, Ajay Yadav, Country Head, Media Agility discusses the factors that distinguish Google Cloud from the competition in the Cloud market. Security Security is the core of every Google service consumed, either in the enterprise segment, or in the consumer’s day-to-day life. Google believes Security is the utmost priority when moving to Cloud. Google has nine defence layers starting right from the chip required for BIOS to the top SaaS encryptions. Most of these security layers are built on a ML model that keeps on improving as and when the data gets improved. From security while building the application to security while
30 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD JANUARY 2020
deploying the application, Google has those features enabled just as checkboxes. When you are deploying an application on the Google cloud with a single service you can check the whole application vulnerability and other threats. Open-Source Whatever Google is designing and offering in the enterprise world, is trying to be in the space of open source services. So, that tomorrow if you feel something is more interesting and innovative, you don’t need to lock in yourself to a particular service or a model of Google. You should be able to port these services as and when you want. Intelligent Every single Google service that you consume today is built on an intelligent model. Even if you are using a Google Cloud platform, it gives you
recommendations for the right size of optimization. Based on the behaviour and consumption on the machine that you are using, Google will suggest you to optimize your machine so that you can optimize your investment. To that extent ML is enabled with all the Google services. Transformative This is where Google proves to be the most engineering organization. We don’t believe in moving services with a status quo, moving services from a co-location to cloud. It does help in pre-empting the challenges of scalability. But for Google, the shift to Cloud has to be transformative in nature. Even with the Data Analytics space, most of these services are managed services so that you don’t have to build an army to manage your infrastructure. What you should be focused on is innovation, which is what your business is demanding.

MICROSOFT AZURE USE CASES Even if you have the vision to hold everything in cloud, there could be some applications that for some reasons you would not be able to move to cloud.
It means that you would have to maintain two environments. One, on-premise, and the other on Cloud. There are complexities because you have to have talent who needs to maintain certain on-premise services and certain services on the cloud as well. Microsoft Azure gives you a functionality where, a public cloud can actually be used in the Data Centre, and the enterprise is not required to leverage its resources to manage two different clouds. Microsoft spends a lot on security. Microsoft Cyber Defense Operations Center has more than 3,500 full-time security professionals and has a $1 Billion annual cyber security investment.
Jatinder Singh, Director of Customer Success, Microsoft delivers the keynote address where he elaborated on the functionalities of Microsoft Azure with use cases.
Use Case 1: Anheuser-Busch InBev Anheuser-Busch InBev, headquartered in Leuven, Belgium, isn’t just a beverage company, it’s a technology company. From its Beer Garage in Silicon Valley to its Global Analytics Centre in Bangalore, India. The company is using technology to drive commercial and operational growth and increase sustainability by moving its IT operations to the cloud, and it is gaining more significant insights into business operations by breaking down data silos and building a global analytics platform. AB InBev chose Microsoft Azure as the best platform to support these game-changing advances.
Use Case 2: Wipro Wipro began the transformation of its internal application landscape a couple of years back and has been progressing aggressively to provide a great digital experience to its employees through re-imagined processes, simplified workflows and systems, enhanced automation and innovation. The Test & Development environments were the first to be on-boarded onto the Azure platform, subsequently, production environments were moved.

based on their adaptability, Rajesh Ramnani, Regional Director – Converged Platforms, Dell Technologies, explained, “There are some applications that are an easy candidate for public cloud. But there are two sets of applications where some work needs to be done. First set of applications which goes under process called refactoring, which means that we put in efforts to move it from the base platform of that application and re-factor it into a new platform. But what we see in organizations that want to completely move on to a private or public cloud is that they
use refreshing. Here they completely refresh that application and replace it with a new application.” Commenting on the adoptability of Cloud by first time users, Gaurav Agarwal, Senior Director, VMWare, said, “Companies like Makemytrip and Flipkart which are born in the cloud environment which naturally align to cloud to start with because they are developed on cloud. The reason for being on cloud is critical function. For example, for a company born in cloud what is required is to start small, but when they become of a certain size, there is cost, economics and
PANEL DISCUSSION // CIO500 CONCLAVE
workload to be considered. Companies that are born in cloud will gravitate towards cloud because they don’t have to hire expensive people to run and manage the environments. But with companies that are traditional, the same discussion would revolve around renting v/s owning. Some part of the capability needs to be kept within the organization. So, the CIO has to convince the CEO that it is not about saving costs but about building an agile environment.”
“Organizations have to decide, do you organize applications and then move to cloud or do you move to cloud and then organize applications. The shift from changing an application takes far longer than first lifting the existing application and then building a team that can develop simultaneously. Rather than doing it sequentially, most mature organizations go for a mix of both. So, that they can re-use any platform and not get locked into a private data centre or a cloud platform, but
they can move back and forth. And then they also start testing their cloud provider and customer resilience from a responses point of view, so it is a mix of both,” he added. The panel went on smoothly as each panellist shared his insights into the matter and the CIOs benefitted from having a window into the perspective of the vendor community as represented by some of the panellists.

logistics industry to grow, we need skilled personnel as warehouse managers and quality instruction supervisors. Some of these skills are being developed by companies investing in the right resources. But it is a long way to get there. There are also other challenges like regulatory hurdles (multiple regulatory agencies), obstacles in land acquisitions and lack of transparency in compliance. These are the challenges that people have to be aware of. It is not just about technology and technical solutions, it is also about understanding the underpinnings of the business,” he said.

In the macroview, the Indian economy is under a
slowdown. Besides that the technology heads are also facing immense pressure because of the changing technology
CIO-CFO DIFFERENCES HAMPERING TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS
R
eferring to the latest newspaper headlines that expose the ‘stagflation’ of the Indian economy from being the world’s fastest growing economy, Atul Govil deliberates on the how one way to look at the current economic slowdown in India is by acknowledging the practical challenges faced by the CIOs in pitching technology projects to the CFO of their organizations.
Digitalization in Manufacturing Organizations: Practical Challenges Faced Highlighting issues like high capital expenditure involved, management buy-in, and rigorous push to keep tech budgets flat or reduce each year. Atul Govil believes that CIOs and technology leaders tend to speak in a language which is practically gibberish to a CFO. And hence, the CFO is not able to relate to the technological advancements that the CIOs are bringing to the table. “CIOs
should think through the language in which they are projecting their ideas and projects to the CFO. Proposing a PoC is the most damaging thing a CIO can do for his/her cause. This is because technically when we speak of a Proof of Concept, by its very definition, it means that it is not yet real. It is so futuristic that it defeats the very purpose of taking up technology. So, rather than doing a PoC, we should think through doing a Pilot. A pilot is a far more focused activity that a CIO should think through,” suggests Atul Govil.

DIGITAL DISRUPTION IN THE BFSI SECTOR BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM
In this session, the panellists talk about how technology is enabling the BFSI sector in providing user-friendly services and solutions that ultimately lead them to securing and retaining a large user base.
T
he Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) sector is at the forefront of riding the Digital Transformation wagon. Upkar Singh, Director IT, FIS Global asserts that it is owing to the fact that BFSI is a sector that caters to a majority of other sectors that it has adopted Digital Transformation at such a remarkable pace. It is estimated that India will become the 3rd largest domestic banking sector by 2050 after China and USA. With India’s working population set to increase over the next decade, the two things put
38 ENTERPRISE IT WORLD JANUARY 2020
together promise an exponential growth. Mobile wallet transactions are also expected to touch 90 Billion by 2022. Within the India perspective, this kind of increasing user base and the digital disruption in the emerging technologies, will lead to a Digital Transformation in the BFSI sector. Referring to the chronology of transformation in the BFSI sector, Upkar Singh explains, “Initially it was easier for banks to get a decent user base. This was because earlier the criteria for selecting a bank were merely physical proximity to one’s residence. But today the users are looking at the kind of services banks are providing, the nature of
customer touch they have and the solutions they are offering.” The question that arises is why is Digital Transformation required for such an industry as the BFSI sector. Addressing this question, Amit Phadke, Group Head - IT, Western Union, says, “Digital Transformation is about agility, scalability and reinventing the processes and established business models.” According to Amit Phadke, Digital Transformation does not necessarily have to be disruptive. But if you are not disruptive, you have to be conscious about the competition that might
PANEL DISCUSSION // CIO500 CONCLAVE
take over. Instead of the new-age technologies like Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning which have not yet been adopted at a large scale, Amit endorses Cloud as an integral part of the digital journey of the BFSI sector. Especially new channels opening up in the international economy, is connecting the BFSI sector of the world. Such integration requires replacing the on-premise traditional model with Cloud. This Cloud might not necessarily be public cloud. It can be private or hybrid too. However, it opens up Pandora’s boxes like security and control to be placed to reach the business objectives that both the companies have. Amit Phadke adds, “The fact is that IT is no longer a backbone. It contributes to business directly. So, when you talk about Technology not necessarily being disruptive, it can be about reducing inefficiencies, improving customer experiences, putting up simple things in a different perspective. With customers becoming impatient today,
you have to be on the top of things to retain them. This requires you to generate that kind of platform using the technology advancements that are happening. This is the leverage you need. This leverage will allow you to not just retain the customers you have bus also attract new customers.” Contributing to the discussion Upkar Singh says, “With the new channels opening up, IT is playing a pivotal role in Digital Transformation. With new channels and personalized services you can make sense of the Technology usages in the industry and these directly cater to the end users.” Moving on to the aspect of catering to the business value and end user satisfaction, Anand Aggarwal, CIO, Capital Trust Limited, talks about the necessity for the Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFC) to have a differentiating factor that sets them apart from the competition in the market. Anand finds this differentiator in Transparency of operations that an NBFC has to offer to its clients.
“For a client, why should s/he go to a particular NBFC or another. The differentiator would be how transparent you are to the customer. What kind of services you are able to give to a customer? This is the differentiator that would decide when a customer wants to come to you or stick with you. If a customer is satisfied with their lender, why would they come to you? This is where technology plays a key role in this business,” says Anand Aggarwal. The point is that your technology solution has to be extremely easy and user-friendly, because only then your consumer is going to be using it. Because if the consumer is not able to use it, then what is the purpose of making that particular piece of technology available to the user. So, when you develop certain initiatives, always take feedback from a controlled set of users before rolling it out.

evolving in terms of flying cars, you also need to have additional systems to ensure safety like an automated aircraft control management. This is where technology steps into the manufacturing space as it evolves and addresses all risks that it introduces,” said Rajesh Pandita. Continuing this discussion, the panel on Digital Transformation in Manufacturing Sector was moderated by Rajesh Pandita, India Regional Head - Group Processes & IT, Thyssenkrupp India Private Limited. He was joined on the dais by Atul Kirane, Vice President (Systems), ISMT LTD; Dr Sunil Gupta, ADDL. Chief-IT/HR, Economic Research Unit Govt of India and Abhay bapna, AVP IT, Adani Wilmar Limited as the esteemed panellists. Sharing his experience, Atul Kirane, Vice President (Systems), ISMT LTD said, “For the first step
of Digital Transformation, we took up small steps that increased the visibility in our organization in terms of external customers as well as our internal customers. We introduced an app on our website. This was used by our competitors and prospective customers. This had a database of our products and dimensions we had as mandated by the world industries. The advantage of this app was that it allowed us to analyze the kind of traffic that was coming to our website in terms of what kind of users wanted to use our website. This gave the Marketing team insights into a potential customer base. The framework includes, at the lowest level, the basic production data, then the management system, the IIoT, then the Analytics layer, and this is all integrated to the customers, stakeholders, management and employees.” Moving on to discuss the integration of OT and the IT networks as prompted by the audience,
Rajesh Pandita said, “There have been instances where companies have integrated OT and IT networks. Unless you put in the right security control, you might not want to essentially integrate, or you may just leave it as one-way integration or communication, which is more like monitoring and gives control, but from the security point of view, you would want the path to be shut down, so it is about what you are trying to deploy or integrate. What is secure for someone else might not be as secure for you. You need to take a calculated risk and do a risk assessment based on what is the benefit you will accrue from it.” Rajesh Pandita concluded the session by asserting that, Digital Transformation is more about the Digital mindset which has to be run by the CEOs of the company themselves which will bring transformation throughout the business. DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN HEALTHCARE SECTOR BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM
This panel elaborated on the evolution of the Healthcare sector as the service providers increasingly incorporate technological advancements in favour of providing an integrated, transparent experience to the patients.
T

the priority is to offer the patients a transparent access to the processes. Moderated by Syed Kadam Murshed, VP IT, Future Oncology Hospital, the session was joined by Girish Koppar, GM IT, Wockhardt Hospitals; Kishor Gojiya, Head IT, CIMS Hospital; Vishal Anand Gupta,
CIO, Suraksha Diagnostics and Vijay Anand, VP IT & Compliance, Visionary RCM. Syed Kadam Murshed, VP IT, Future Oncology Hospital, began the discussion by highlighting nthe fact that customers are coming up as an evolving factor in the healthcare industry. In
PANEL DISCUSSION // CIO500 CONCLAVE
addition to the customers or patients, another important factor in this industry are the doctors and the hospitals that are providing the healthcare facilities. Taking off from this point, Girish Koppar, GM IT, Wockhardt Hospitals, recounted that, “In the last decade a lot of things have changed in the healthcare industry. One example would be the digital access to test reports for the patients. They no longer have to physically go to the hospital or pathology lab to collect their reports. They can get it, for instance, through email. Then there is the emergence of mobile apps for doctors and patients and the integration with bio-medical devices. This transformation is becoming a life saving experience.” because data is being captured and delivered. Initially claims were processed manually and physically, This integration of technology into the healthcare industry has accrued multiple benefits. Speaking on this, Kishor Gojiya, Head IT, CIMS Hospital, said, “Over the last couple of years, the focus on keeping and storing health records of patients is becoming important. Today everybody wants their health records on their phones or IoT devices. Based on the scenario that people today are aware of the technology advancements, healthcare should have a robust system wherein
they can develop and design according to the customer needs. So, for the healthcare service providers, it is mandatory to build the ERP on their platform so that their customer gets satisfaction according to their requirements.” Connecting the healthcare industry with the insurance claims, Vishal Anand Gupta, CIO, Suraksha Diagonstics, contributed to the discussion from his experience. He said, “We tried to bridge the gap from the technology and data front which a customer faces. Most of us have gone through the medi-claim based process of admitting a patient in the hospital and waiting for hours to understand the status of the claim, whether it has passed or not.” Addressing the intimation process in medi-claim based processes, Vishal said, “There is a huge concern in the insurance industry for pre-intimation. Usually we are used to a post-intimation process. Once you are done with everything, the hospital will send your data to the insurer, the insurer would then go through it, if there is any issue with respect to that, they will come back to you. This entire process of the patient getting discharged for an insurance patient typically took six to eight hours. With the connectivity technology brought, and the internal operability of data, this process of waiting gets eliminated. So, the moment the
patient gets intimated to the system, the process starts. The challenge is that it is still not real-time. The challenge could be with respect to the policy level as some hospitals might not want their real-time data to go to the insurance companies. It is always a very controlled mechanism of sharing the data.” “The problem is that everybody is looking at it from their own perspective but nobody is looking at it in terms of customer centricity in their workflow. If we look at the Ubers and Olas of the world, their success comes from customer centricity in their workflow. People have to change their approach from operation centricity to customer centricity. The insurance companies are trying to make their processes as transparent as possible. Every intimation that comes in, which all departments it is going through, what is the time frame they are taking, it is all available either on their website or on their mobile apps or partner systems. As much of transparency into their workflow comes in, the customers are well advanced notified that this is what is happening and this is what is supposed to happen in the next step of your claim process,” Vishal explained. Vijay Anand, VP IT & Compliance, Visionary RCM ended the discussion with a comparison of the Indian and US Healthcare Scenarios.

THE CHANGING ROLE OF CIO – CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES BY SANJAY@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM

India; CG Prasad, Ex AVP Technology, Next Story Group; Anil Porter, AVP IT & GDS Services, Interglobe Technology Quotient Transportation and Nitin Agarwal, President, Group CIO, CTO, CDO, Edelweiss Financial Services. Commenting on how the role of the CIO has

evolved through the years, CG Prasad, Ex AVP Technology, Next Story Group said, “When I started my career, the terminology for this role was EDP (Electronic Data Processing). Then it evolved into IT (Information Technology). Then followed ICT (Information Communication Technology). Now it is IS (Information Systems). If there is no change in the ecosystem, you will not evolve. So, the role of the CIO will not go away, it will go on evolving.” According to Nitin Agarwal, President, Group CIO, CTO, CDO, Edelweiss Financial Services, “The challenge that an IT leader is facing today, be it a CIO, CTO or CDO is the sheer pace of change. If you look at the number of new technologies that are being developed and adopted now, they make processes efficient and faster. So, how do you pace yourself with the industry and how do you architect yourself where you are always ready for an opportunity. The world is no longer about saying that I am going to adopt this technology and will capitalize it in the next two years. If you take that long, it will become outdated. That is the biggest challenge - How
do you accommodate for the future where you are continuously able to change and adopt the technology innovation?” Placing the role of the CIO within the ambit of the organization, Anil Porter, AVP IT & GDS Services, Interglobe Technology Quotient Transportation, said, “CIO’s survival would depend on how good they are with adaptability, appliances and governances because that is where they bring in the value of experiences to ensure stability to the organization.” “First is they have to stay up-to-date with the new technologies like AI, ML, RPA. They should know how to convert business objectives and values into technologies and what is the RoI they bring through the process,” CG Prasad added to the discussion. Anand Kumar Sinha, CIO & Director IT, OCS Group India addressed the question through the analogy of binoculars. Just like the two lenses of the binoculars form a single vision, the two lenses for the CIO are Business and IT. The expectation from the CIO is that you should look at Business and IT from a single vision. The challenge is about
generating business outcome. Because unless and until there is some business outcome, there is no sense in adopting technology. Budget and profitability are major factors here. In terms of data, whatever data you are collecting, whether through traditional or through transformational projects, what are you doing with that data is important. Insights are a challenge.” “The role of CIO is going to be doubled. Earlier it was about Change, Innovation and Operation. The square will add to it Customer, Insight and Optimization. From sales, to negotiation, to people management, the role of the CIO is diverse and cannot be done away with,” Anand added. The discussion came to a close with Harish Chandra, CTO, Sarovar Hotels reinforcing that, “The role of CIOs is not going away. They are adding value to other functions, be it Marketing, Sales, Finances or Security. They are supporting function. They are business managers, and they guide different functions to make sure that business value is there.”
