Homes and Land Real Estate Co. Thompson: The man with a plan to build equity

Benton Thompson is well known for his many endeavors in and around McComb, including the Mount Zion Community Center and Community Transportation, but he also is a successful real estate broker.

Homes & Land Real Estate Co., located at 903 Delaware Ave., McComb, has been helping people throughout the community purchase their own property for decades.

“We’ve been blessed to be there 21 years — a good 21 years,” Thompson said. “We’ve put a lot of people in a lot of homes.”

While many people might think they’d not be able to afford the purchase of a home or property, Thompson said people can’t afford not to.

Thompson was formerly in real estate in Fairfield, Calif., before moving back to Pike County to open up shop in 1998.

He’s been in the real estate and mortgage business for 40 years and taught real estate courses at Southwest Mississippi Community College.

Now he’s on a mission to teach buyers the importance and advantages of home ownership, including equity appreciation and tax benefits.

someone else. Building the equity up for the landlord isn’t as preferable as building equity for yourself, and Thompson sees the purchase of a home or land as an excellent investment.

Some buyers may be apprehensive about purchasing a home over concerns about their credit score or otherwise, but Thompson is the man with the plan to help potential homeowners put themselves in a good position to make an investment, he said.

“A lot of people think they can’t afford to purchase a home,” Thompson said. “But really, they can’t afford not to.”

Credit issues can be solved and home ownership is cheaper in the long run, too, he said.

Rental rates can easily change but buyers who can secure fixed-rate mortgages are able to build a solid financial foundation.
