Winterize to stay cozy, save money BY CONNOR RABORN

ater and heat are the utilities homeowners should carefully maintain to winter-proof their dwellings as the colder part of the year approaches. For the times the temperature will inevitably dip below freezing in Southwest Mississippi, protecting a residence’s plumbing prevents the hassle and cost of burst, frozen pipes. Letting faucets drip and wrapping exposed pipes are the most common methods. “Shield them from the weather. Whatever you wrap the pipes with, the insulation material needs to be water-proof. If it’s not and the material soaks up water, then it’ll freeze along with the pipe,” said Rusty Marsalis, president and owner of Marsalis Mechanical Contractors Inc. in McComb. He recommends using closed-cell rubber insulation, ensuring the joints are glued or taped with whatever the insulation manufacturer recommends. “A lot of people around here might have a yard hydrant where the pipe sticks a foot or two out of the ground,” Marsalis said. “All they have to do is wrap the pipe with newspaper or a towel and put a small trash can over it to shield it from the wind, because the wind exponentially speeds up freezing.” “No. 1, you’ve got to protect exposed piping. No. 2, drip your faucets, especially if you live in a conventional house.” Conventional houses are those which are built off the ground and have a crawlspace where the plumbing is. Dripping faucets may not be quite as necessary for homes on slabs. Marsalis still recommends letting faucets drip, especially in bathrooms that are on an outside wall, as those rooms may not be as insulated. Marsalis described the process for proper dripping that will prevent freezing. “You open the cold water first and get your (dripping) stream right, then turn your hot water wide open until it gets fully hot,” he said. “Then turn it down so it’ll drip. You might have to check it later if it cools down a bit.” Due to the prevalence of slab houses and of public knowledge about dripping faucets and wrapping pipes, Marsalis only occasionally gets calls for frozen, burst pipes. More than with overnight freezes, pipe problems often arise during periods or three to five days of the temperature staying below freezing. But just because a faucet has stopped dripping or water won’t turn on, that doesn’t mean the pipes can’t still be thawed before the breaking point. Marsalis recommends in this situation turning faucets threequarters closed, leaving them one-quarter open. Eventually, the water will flow again. “When ice forms in a pipe, it’s sort of like a slushy. It gets kind of icy, and the water won’t move, especially if it’s a long section,” he said. “If you close it, you almost guarantee that that slushy will turn into hard ice. It may be frozen 90 percent, but it’ll only

burst when that last 10 percent freezes. That’s when you get that expansion and the pipe breaks.” If a homeowner knows which pipe is starting to freeze, they can heat it externally with a hair dryer, he added. He advises those with wells to use a heat source like a high-watt light bulb. While the typical Mississippian may be tempted to dramatically crank their heater up during the first sign of chillier temps, doing so can increase the electrical bill. Heating and cooling are about 43% of a home’s energy usage. If the home has an electric water heater, that accounts for another 17%, according to Lucy Shell of Magnolia Electric Power. She recalled a customer running the heater at 80 degrees when the recommended temperature is 68. “When you’re setting it at 80, it’s having to come on and run more. You don’t think about how much it’s running; that’s one of the biggest factors,” Shell said. She also reminds customers that the extent of the cold outside will affect how often the heater runs. “Even if their house is thoroughly insulated, their house is still going to use heating and cooling each day because of the temperatures outside,” she said. “The temperatures outside fluctuate, and we have no control over that. If it’s a colder day, that heating system is going to come on and run more. It’s definitely going to use more electricity on a 20-degree day than on a 40-degree day.” Even if 68 doesn’t quite do the trick for some, keeping track of the thermostat and a home’s energy usage can be helpful. A diagram of recommended thermostat settings from Magnolia Electric shows increasing costs in relation to settings above 68 degrees, based on an outdoor temperature of 51 degrees. It shows 12% more cost for 70 degrees, 24% for 72, 35% for 74, 47% for 76, 59% for 78 and 71% more for 80 degrees. For those looking to keep their thermostat a little lower so their bill will follow suit, Shell recommends putting on a jacket or blankets to stay comfortable. “If you have windows that get a lot of direct sunlight, definitely leave the curtains open or the blinds open. That’s an easy thing to do too, and it will make a difference,” she said. “Once the house is built, it’s not the easiest thing to go in and add insulation, but maybe there is a chance to put insulation in the attic.” For conventional houses, insulation can be added in the crawlspace. Adding caulk around windows and weather stripping around doors can help, she said. An occasional issue with mobile homes is that animals may tear holes in duct work if it’s beneath the home. “You don’t want to be heating and cooling the outside world. You want to make sure that it’s in your home,” Shell said. One way for Magnolia Electric customers to track energy usage is through the SmartHub app. There are also booklets available in which customers can record their meter readings and compare percentages of energy usage among various appliances.
