he brain child of Donna Davies and Donna Parish-Bischoff of Hudson Valley Halloween Magazine, the new Wappingers Falls Halloween Parade will kick off on Saturday, October 18th 2014. The nightmare begins on Elm Street and finishes at Mesier Park. Here there are vendors, food, face painters, crafters, and spooky fun awaiting the children. Floats of ghosts, ghouls, and zombies will be led by Haunted Mansion’s own Kevin McCurdy. There will be contests for floats, pumpkin carving, costumes, etc. The prizes are awesome, so kids should come dressed in their Halloween best! Captain Jack, the pirate, will bring his buccaneer spirit and charm to the landlubbers. Bring your cameras for photo opportunities. This is all made possible by the

Aye, Captain Jack

R

ick Martinez aka Captain Jack, has been a Captain Jack impersonator for seven years. An experienced actor, model and emcee, he has created the pirate persona as career. He visits schools, children’s hospitals and libraries, reading to children to teach the importance of literacy and learning. He has also won an award for Volunteer of the Year with Literacy Volunteers in 2013. Another passion is helping the local food pantry with an annual food drive at his home, Captain Jacks Haunted Pirate Ship, where admission is one canned good per person. Last year he had over 3,500 people come to the event over four nights and raised over 4,800 pieces for the pantry and another $41,500 in cash donations all going to The Calvary Food Pantry. Because of this event, Captain Jack came to the forefront and became a wanted commodity to

help other events and fundraisers. Also as an experienced model and actor, Rick has become the official pirate for the Fueled by Rum organization and soon The Pirate Radio Network, and is currently working with Rum Bahamas 2015 rum convention in Nassau as their spokesperson and poster pirate. Continuing to help promote literacy in a new and fun way as a different pirate, Rick has created and is producing a children’s TV show called “The Captain Crowe Show”. It is using core values as pirates to help the viewer be engaged into reading and learning. The show also has a crowdfunding site at www.gofundme.com/8z1zag to help finish production.

Michael Wardell’s Hot Rod Hearse Michael Wardell will lead off the parade with his hearse this year with Kevin McCurdy. purchased the hearse about three years ago. I always wanted to have a hot rod car that was different and unique from what you would normally see at car shows. When the opportunity came to purchase a hearse, it seemed fitting to own one, since I have always had a deep passion for Halloween. Over the last three years my father and I have been customizing the hearse. One of my favorite aspects of the vehicle is the two electric chairs we built to put in the back of the car. These chairs are street legal, so the car is able to seat 4 living passengers.

Halloween has always been a great time of year for me and my family. In fact, I love this time of year so much my wife and I got married on October 9th years ago. One of my favorite Halloween memories was when my daughter was born because I suddenly realized that I was able to go trick-or-treating again. Another thing that I love to do every year is host a Halloween party for my daughter and all of her friends. I even built a haunted house in the yard. We love Halloween so much in our household that the mantle above the fireplace is always decorated with various Halloween decorations and skulls through out the year.

Giving Back on Halloween There’s nothing like the sights, sounds and smells of early Autumn. Best of all, that means HALLOWEEN is on its way! By Kim Chiarello Jameson

H

alloween 2013 was our first year giving back to the community by taking advantage of the tremendous amount of foot traffic we get on Halloween night in the Crown Heights neighborhood of the Town of Poughkeepsie. We researched and visited several local charities to find one that we truly believed in. Finally we landed upon the Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie (http://www.childrenshome.us/). While there are several organizations in the Hudson Valley that do great things, we were really inspired by how CHP tries to break the cycle of children in less than ideal situations. The Children’s Home empowers the kids to take back control of their lives to set them on the best path possible to become successful, well-rounded adults. We were amazed at how many people visited our home to see our outside haunt (and donate!) last

year despite the rain. It was a soggy, windy night as children of ALL ages stood outside with jaw gaping faces watching the projector show in our big window, the fog take over the cemetery, and the props jump out at them as they squealed with delight. We collected over $350 and a carload of new and used toys, clothing and baby goods. We spent well over $100 in Halloween candy and still almost ran out! If it’s a dry evening this year, we’ll surely need 2-3 times that amount. Why do we do it? We can’t deny that it makes us feel really good to give back to our community. We also get inspired (and feel that warm fuzzy feeling inside) when we’re working outside (we started building the fence at the end of August this year) and neighbors stop and tell us how much they appreciate what we do and how excited they are to watch it all come together. Even the kids yell “Great job!” while riding by on their bikes, so we know the children love it! And after all, it really is about them, which is why we feel great about trying to help the Chil-

Email for more information at: kcjameson74@gmail.com The Children’s Home provides a range of services and programs giving hope and healing to abused and neglected children in the Hudson River Region. Having served 293 children and their family members last year, the Home provides a full range of residential services including campus-based care, community-based group homes and boarding homes, and independent living apartments. It also provides regular foster care and intensive therapeutic foster homes. Throughout their 167

dren’s Home of Poughkeepsie again this year. What goes into a haunt like ours you may be wondering? Lots of blood, sweat, screams and a few tears! And time. Lots and lots of time. We started last year by scavenging free pallets from local warehouse stores in the area (with their prior approval of course) to build the fence (thank goodness for a strong, stable roof rack on the CR-V). From those many pallets (approximately 80) we also built a ground-breaker coffin and other small props. We’ve put in approximately 150 hours of labor (just the two of us) and at least $100 worth of rebar, to hold the fencing in place. There are also plen-

ty of store bought decorations and props (who knows the total on these through the years!), including the donation of recycled barn yard wood coffins and plenty of home-made foam tombstones. To welcome our Trick or Treaters is ‘Tony the Terrible’, who stands tall at over 6 feet and the 20 x 40 foot spider web (which we made ourselves out of clothesline rope), complete with giant spiders patiently waiting your arrival. There are other creepy additions this year, such as our 3 Witches perched over their cauldron (be sure to not ignore them, or they’ll put a spell on you!) and a Vampire, nestled quietly in his coffin. So be sure to come by for a SPOOK on Halloween night (from
