The term "paramilitary forces" in India has not been defined in any acts or by authorities officially however they are conventionally used to refer to three forces i.e. Assam Rifles, Special Frontier Force and Indian Coast Guard. Central Armed Police Forces were formerly referred as Paramilitary Forces however from March 2011, Ministry of Home Affairs adopted a uniform nomenclature of Central Armed Police Forces for five forces namely CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF, SSB to avoid confusion.

For a BSF officer the day start early with physical training. Even before reaching the office they may take reports from the field locations. Office work involves checking the key points of border and weapon maintenance. Officers have to allot various shifts to the personnel deployed at the post. It is said that BSF person is on duty 24 hours so even if you reach back to rest you may need to go and check posts at any time in the night as well.

In paramilitary forces, the pay and remuneration vary depending on the force and rank. Typically, Assistant Commandants fall in the pay band of Rs. 1.8 lakhs per annum to Rs. 4.5 lakhs with grade pay.
