WORD TO THE MOTHER
Today, Melissa Hull seems to occupy the apex most entrepreneur’s strive to reach. On the day we met, our conversation was squeezed in between her last speaking engagement and the need to hurriedly pack for another flight to some far away land where she’d repeat her unfortunate story that has turned into fortune; serendipity, treasure, destiny. Having enjoyed a career as an accomplished artist, professional writer, and international speaker, add to that: the television show she hosts, television network she founded, and the business of bringing others’ stories to the light of day. At the pinnacle of success, her profile is impressive and her resume reads like the kind you embellish to land that dream job.
Another day ended like a nightmare. There were no books in her library to inform her next moves. How could she ever move forward? She had taken no class to prepare her, heard no alarm to warn her, seen not one sign that such a normal afternoon could destroy countless others. Before the funeral she was numb and

dumb, though expected to find words in response to failed attempts of comfort. It was all so uncomfortable. Viewing his tiny frame, selecting appropriate attire, choosing a box for burying the boy who brought her such joy were torturous tasks. No mother should have to do it, but for Drew’s mom, Melissa, this assumed end marked the beginning of another life.
Before finding purpose in pain, Melissa suffered long and hard. Nights and days conflated, as she struggled to find reason to rise with morning. With part of her heart away, she found it nearly impossible to be present for her other small son or attentive to the husband who, too, was sparring with his new reality. But none of it seemed real, so how could she make sense of the accident she could see cracking her family open? A deep thinker, naturally, Melissa replayed every moment leading to the discovery of her son’s body. Rewinding was getting her stuck, rote memory was dragging her deeper into an abyss from which she was unlikely to emerge. Drew’s drowning

catalyst to pour onto canvas her most personal pain. That which was cathartic for her caught the eye of those who should know potential, birthing a thriving art career.
When a friend suggested Melissa travel with her to the other side of the globe to share her story, she reluctantly yielded. As the Indian audience became engaged, then, inspired, the mother-turned-artist found her words were not merely passionate, but powerful. She has told her story in many worlds to many audiences since, leaving myriad reasons for living beyond one’s worst days.
was drawing her further and further away from everything and everyone else that mattered. Then the letter came.
To date, Melissa has no idea how it got to her or who exactly wrote it, just that it was right on time. When all efforts to self-heal failed, the grieving mother determined to take matters into her own hands. Plans complete, she set the date for her own demise, including letters to loved ones she hoped would not see her way of escape as abandoning them - just her unavoidable anguish. Before attempting to take her life, Melissa held this envelope from a woman only identifying herself as “Theresa.” The writer’s simple letter was her single endeavor to render some help since she, too, had lost a child. When reading the words “There will be joy and happiness, but you will have to choose them…everyday” something alive leaped from paper to person, planting seed in hopeful soil. Using the power of words, the mystery women provided enough resuscitation for Melissa to decide to live.
If a picture is, in fact, worth a thousand words, the ones from the paper Melissa “took-in” moved her to seek something new - something that would enable her to bare her soul without continuing to overwhelm friends or family. An art class seemed the perfect
Surviving a very sad year, the mending mom reviewed a series of letters she deemed necessary to write to the child she could no longer hold. Surprised that what she wrote had healing properties, Melissa complied those notes into something she believed could benefit another parent the way the illusive Theresa had done for her. The book, Lessons From Neverland, follows Melissa’s candid wins and losses while seeking wholeness. Like the inspired character, Peter Pan, Melissa came to terms with the fact that her “boy would never grow up.” She, too, found solace in her belief that he was “off having adventures.” Their story - hers and Drew’s - has sold worldwide.
Melissa Hull is better than ever. Her son’s transition gave her unsolicited purpose. She tackles taboo topics relative to how one is to feel and what one is to do at such times. These days she assists those with stories of their own; training them how to build a brand, utilize multi-media platforms, and find their voice. A stranger forced her to search for hers, speaking light in darkness. They were only words. But they changed everything for this mother.

MELISSA HULL GALLEMORE | LESSONS FROM NEVERLAND
As Lessons from Neverland opens, a warm Southwestern breeze suggests that we are in for a peaceful ride. Yet with each bend in the road, the reader finds the journey increasingly more unexpected and exhilarating.
This gripping memoir introduces us to a remarkable woman who has had to endure the most terrible tragedy any mother can face. And just when we begin to believe our heroine has made it safely to the other side, we are drawn into a mystery that culminates in another type of tragedy altogether.
The fact that the author emerges in tact, inspired and on a mission to use her losses and life experiences to inspire, guide, and coach others is nothing short of miraculous. Most women would have crumbled under the extreme stress and strain. But then, most women don’t have their own personal Peter Pan and his Lessons from Neverland guiding them through life.
