History
how it all began... The first communities established in the area were African American, German, and Swedish communities.
In the early 20th century, minority communities were pushed from other areas and established communities in East Austin.
3
As of 1928, the area was also zoned for industrial use.
During the 1930s and 40s Mexican American and Hispanic communities developed in the neighborhood.
More recently, gentrification of East Austin has brought new demographics into the area, causing a shift in the community and culture.
4
Current
what it became...
Currently, the neighborhood exhibits the strong Hispanic influence that has developed there over time, as well as a strong artistic flair and hipster subcultural influences.
5
The blending of these two distinct cultures has resulted in a visible and distinct culture that is unique to the East Cesar Chavez neighborhood.
