Enunciation Theory is a rennovation of architectural transmission structure originated from film theory. According to Louis Pierre Althusser, Marxist theory, Interpellation is a process by which ideology, embodied in major social and political institutions, consistutes the nature of individual subject's identities through the very process of institutions and discources of 'hailing' them in social interactions. Ideology serves the conquest function of state apparatus and operation mechanism. On one hand, it guarantees the subjection of individuals, on the other, it preserves and gives rebirth to the social mechanisms. While one way to accomplish the prevailing of ideology is by doing interpellation. In this relationship, the subject and people share double sides character at the same time, ideology is like a double mirror structure.

Interpellation was first introduced by a French Marxist philosopher, Louis Pierre Althusser. It is the process by which ideology, embodied in major social and political institutions, constitutes the nature of individual subjects' identities through the very process of institutions and discourses of 'hailing' them in social interactions. For me, interpellation can be take as an transmission of architecture design as well, Althusser used this method in constructivism, which also can be a principle ideology in my thougt of architecture design.

Enunciator's Interpellation The Enunciation Theory can be applied on many disciplines besides film theory. Artists are supposed to convey messages to this world. I need to look for an unique reference, like architecture, photography, graphic design, literature research, to define my physical and indentical realization.

Chinese culture can not be acclimatized to the western culture...... Those so called modernistic culturemovement or artistic expression in China are totally torn to pieces. There is not a trend of ideology focusing on indigenous reality, neither the focus on savagery that the mankind lives. It’s quite hard to define a new type of film different from the old one in China. It seems like artists like to describe their works as ‘cinema verite’ and ‘direct cinema’ to make it fashionable. It’s been a long while.

Noel Carroll (1996) states, "The difference between Non-fictional and fictional is textual commitment, but not the surface structure of context. " In other words, it's about ways of watching. "It's our ways of watching that create documentation. "

आययभगवतीप्र ाऩारममताहृदयसूत्रम। The Heart Mantra

It's not about whether the building is delightful, It's about the way by which the architect wants to convey. Enunciators deliver issues about their own theories, and sometimes preview on social culture concept as well as public quagmires.

Reading scripture is a process of interpellation, by asking ourselves questions in the mantra, we examine whether we have accomplished final nirvana. Whatever is form, that is emptiness, whatever is emptiness, that is form, the same is true of feelings, perceptions, impulses and consciousness; In emptiness there is no form, nor feeling, nor perception, nor impulse, nor consciousness; No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind; No forms, sounds, smells, tastes, touchables or objects of mind; No sight organ element, and so forth, until we come to: There is no decay and death, no extinction of decay and death; There is no suffering, no origination, no stopping, no path. There is no cognition, no attainment and non attainment;

The Heart Mantra is a classic scripture of Buddism, which convey messages to inform people what we should pursue. It provides an ideology of Voidness, after which we have been looking for. Only we are looking for voidness can we achieve the real success. My favorite verse is Beyong all illusoin, ultimately Nirvana. As enunciator, or other forms of artists, I create nothing real and entitative, I tell people nothing didactic and compulsory. People would feel what I am feeling through interpellation.

5

The reason why people need objective building design and enunciator's interpellation is that we live in a world survived in post modernity and fragmented globalization, we need our ways to secure us and meet the need of fragmentization. Architects, as enunciators can locate the unite we have been foraging in this digression, after the exile, through the isolation.

Architects, as well as other artists, have rights and duties to illustrate their internal thinking of environment we live in. For us architects who serve our clients, we supposed to be the most objective people in all projects for there are so many disciplines we have to wander around but not to break through, like urban context, history, financial limits, laws and traditional pattern etc. However architects still have their particular unique interpretation of this world to be shouted out.

In all kinds of art forms, there is always a perspective, no matter how objective it looks like. For documentary literature, there is no complete coincide between author and narrator; For photography literature, there is no overlapping of subjects and photographer, and for architecture, architects and residents are sitting on the opposite place of a seesaw, trying to keep balance.

Dimention

Design Specification

[1] Education Interaction between Spacial arrangement and pedagogical strategy have been impacting on habitus. Education in China carries on The Beaux-Arts tradition and see highly of THOUGHTS. Being an architectural educational building, the department means not only education but stimulate students’ thoughts efficiently as well. Whether the quality of teaching is good or not directly depends on the value that department means to the university, which can be clearly seen by the money flow.

[2] Aesthetic Baroque used to be great exaggeratedly luxury and always decorated with too much unecessary ornaments. The architects are trying to improve Baroqure into a more particular style, discarding all the excessive ornaments but the impressing geometry itself. With simply geometry, we can generate a space which can influent people inside. Geometry makes architecture available to speak. Architects are trying to convey a message that the new deign style is rising just like the shape of the building devouring the traditional box-looking building.

1] Time dimention Split students into 2 parts, while RED part students are meeting in studio, BLUE part students can be the visiting communicators and discuss with RED freely. It turns around, which makes the department constantly active and efficently operate. Studio time ususally take two days per week on Monday and Thursday. The number of students in the department reaches the top at these days, which brings great chances for idea collision and communication. As time passing by, the number dramastically decrease, cooling the department.

[2] Active level dimention Research on the activity level of flowing people, students, tutors and administration officers. Students are the most active group, tutors ranks second and officers are the lowest relatively. In addition, students are the largest group in school. ( Red is active while grey is cool ) Educational area should be constant active and meanwhile, drive the working area in motion. The architects are trying to convey a fact that the inspiring active area is devouring at the traditional solid administration area.

Geometry [3] Spatial dimention In reality, there has a big distance between real education system and ideal system in China, like rising need of peosonal working area and growing number of students enrollment. However, it is embarrassing that on one hand, we need more communication connection, on the other hand, we have been under limited factually. Thus, we can not design a architecture department with the spacial lauguage that architects used to use.

Spatial dimention and time dimention shoule be considered to meet the need of students. Take X and Y classes for instance, students get divided into 2 different groups, for a better working mode.

Each unit has been developed vertically and horizentally on geometry and spacial envelopes. For the purpose of creating dynamic, we extract a few Wedge generatrix from the basic geometries, then merge, extrude, interweave, contort for a unpredictable but controllable result of space.

I'm Leo's friend and I'm in red class. There are many complex space in department building so I can see blue classes but no need to worry about bothering them. That's why I can easily tell Leo how he did. While i told him to see my presentation next time in the same way, because I got an important presentation also.

With the na誰ve dream and the oppressed enthusiasm for equality, the difference between social classes had been forcedly eliminated. The inconsiderate division stuffed the original empty wealthy quarter with crowded people from lower class, breaking the spatial order of the well-designed residence. The unlivable situation driven the rich away, leaving the empty room with extreme low rental. Used to be posh, now wait to be torn down, Hankow is condemned to death now. [Irony] It's the best time while the worst also. The old had been tripped as the new arisen with its new pattern, in its new environment. China used to owe the most advanced building tectonics but can not replicate the old fantasies. Cities were stamped by steels, glazes and concrete. Similarities show up inevitably if old fantasies with modern perspectives were given rebirth. Over decorated ornaments make the imitations way too pretentious. These 'old money' have to wait to be torn down.

New troop is on the way, in the dying breath.

City complex & Market roles Interpellation

Site Location

Game between 4 roles

As the surrounding of the site is in the center since the year of 1900, the value of the land is relatively higher than the adjacent area as it is in both geographic center and economic center of the city. In that case, if we inconsiderately keep the water and transformed the site into a simple park, it would make no sense given the high price of the land. In that case, we have to add extra function while preserving the water.

In urban planning, Architects do not have entitative power like bussinessmen or politicians, thus sometimes architects have to find a standing point, to satisfy both clients and government. The diagram shows a game among 4 roles, the architect as enunciator interpellates 3 roles at the same time; satisfy all 3 roles.

The site is located in the historical block in Wuhan, which is originally built in 19th century. Meanwhile the block has the highest building density in the city and the low living quality where most of the residents are workers with low income. However the site is also located in one of the highest land value area in Wuhan, with convinient transportation. With the development of the city, the renewal process of this block becomes a serious problem, many buildings had been demolished and replaced by modern communities. It is the place with more than 100 years history, a place where so many people called it home.

4 Steps

Four roles in the program possess a unique relationship network, as they interact with each other while gaming against each other.

[1] Origin: In order to improve the economic growth in the district, the government decide to transform a part of the residential area in the center of Hankou into commercial area in the urban planning in 1980s. One of the investor won the bid, and signed a contract with government. As the investor acquire the tenure of the 1.6 acre, the original residents were forced to move out. As a part of the old city center, the surrounding of the site was one of the area as mentioned.

Four roles in the market place

Government

Investor

We need to improve living quality of this area but we don't have the money. So architect and us make a deal secretly to attract investors with low rental to sign land property lease and supervise them.

We sign the lease for low rental, the area is quite shabby so we will refresh the atmosphere very quick. and it will be profitable.

Resident

Architect

Housing price is too high to afford but living quality is not worth the rental. If there is no change coming up, we will be so disappointed to the government.

I will help government to solve the civil problems and contrive a project to attract as many invetments as possible to build a living-friendly quality for residents.

From government’s perspective, their vital goal is to gain the reputation from dwellers by renewing the old district while applying the minimum expenditure. They possess the power to issue regulations and the rent the land to investors. From the local residents’ perspective, they are the most vulnerable. But their comment on government is of significance.

From investor’s perspective, their vital goal is to achieve more profit in the low expenditure possible while co-operating with government. They are restricted by government’s regulation and possess money for the lease of lands. From architect’s perspective, his vital goal is to improve the living condition of local residents while preserve the architecture treasure in the old area. In order to achieve that, he has to persuade government with a tempting plan, while attract the investor to pay for it.

To do that, government first have to pay for the renewal of the site as they turn it into a qualified public place with multiple functions. Such improvement could impose indirect influence on the value of the adjacent area and yet attract the investments to the development of these area. The money is used to improve the living condition (turn them into old style mansion for the rich or pay composition check to the local residents and apply the land into commercial utility while the preserve of the building is required in the first place).

[2] Discard: The construction proceeded until the investor suddenly withdraw their investment for unknown reason, just after the excavation of the foundation ditch had finished. The government encountered a dilemma, as they did not have the money to recover the land into residential area as before, nor did they attract other investor to take over the land. Yet the site had been abandoned. [3] Deadlock: Such situation lasted for decades while the ditch had been magically turned into a lake. Though the surrounding area became heated commercial area, no one was interested in the abandoned land. The situation awkwardly became a deadlock. [4] Rebirth: Architect became the ice-breaker as he proposed an alternative solution. Regarding the dreadful living condition in the nearby residential area, architect persuade government invest in the re-planning of the whole area, turn the site into well-designed public place yet improving the value and the quality of the surrounding area and attracting investment to the surrounding area with the qualified public space. If the investment was successful, government just need to issue regulations to the development of surrounding area. Thus the surrounding area's renewal could be achieved without government investments.

Function Combination Multi-Function

In that case, the architect’s goal had been achieved. The residents got improved living condition or huge compensation checks. The investor acquired the land for a lease. And the government gets reputation and save the money to renew the old district.

Urban Textual Commitment

Extraction of Chinese Classical Garden

Recognize a city depends on the way of its textual commitment, research on the texture provides us useful data to replan this area.

Fronting hills with water on the back is a typical layout in ancient chinese gardens. Traditional sloping roofs resemble hills formally.

Among all those samples, there were standard traditional Wuhan residence known as Lifen, newly build commercial complex after the “Reform and Opening policy”, as well the old city corner which had been irregularly constructed. We discovered that as intricate as the urban pattern might have seem, it provided space with a scale well suited for public activity. Meanwhile, the more complicate the urban fabric, the more diverse in the street activity. Yet, such complexity in urban fabric could be considered as a beneficial factor towards the arrangement of the underwater complex.

As an expectation that our underwater complex would be designed in line with the current urban fabric, we randomly stamped 8 circle with a diameter of 100m, around the site, as a deeper investigation to the urban fabric in the site. We extracted all these samples in the circle and analyze, in order to make what we do, a salute to the old city pattern, rather than naïve imitation.

The traditional Chinese garden follow the principle of “from nature, above nature”, in an intricate attempt to achieve nature beauty with the intelligence of human. Simple our design of garden might seem, we literarily put everything a garden could possibly possess, and organized them in the appropriate order. We do not have mountain, thus the awning was performed as an imitation of the continuous sierra.

One key factor in Chinese Gardening is the observer should be a part of the sight, as wherever a visitor stands, the place could be a scene for another visitor. This feature made traditional Chinese garden in irregular shape, and do not emphasis on making the sight symmetrical. Such chaotic appearance made the garden seem disorder, but it is actually ruled by the unseen request for the scenic focal point.

Special weather makes Wuhan a special region in China. In addition to traditional Chinese slope roof, autonomous construction is another obvious phenomenon for residents are familiar with the disadvanges at home. The interesting part of autonomous constuction is residents build constructions with their needs and intelligence, which made in Wuhan.

Thermal Insulation

In this project, we first collect the data and the methods of local design style, and extract the most obvious factors, courtyard. By following the same path, I design the residence in this old area. All the tectonics are familiar with the residents, and possible for them to carry out.

Archigram was firstly hold by Sir Peter Cook and his partners in1960. They take architecture as hardware while the people in the architecture as software. Hardwares are essential and they would work by following the process of softwares. When it comes to the architecture, Archigram states the idea that architecture will be replaced by implements eventually.

As the most intimate assistant to architects, digital tools are indispensable in this mechanism, like the cameras to the directors in films. For architects, they can easily convey messages to clients by simply setting some parameters in softwares and command on hardwares to accomlish the project. Interpellation can be conducted by mechanism easily and architecture can be a perfect machine for living in.

Hardwares are supposed to be subordinated to softwares for the purpose of serving administrators. This mechanism resembles the architecture field and its hierarchy. Same as the thinking of ARCHIGRAM, houses should serve clients by executing commands from architects. Architects as enunciators play a leading role in the mechanism, by dealing with architectural components, function, form, space, to create buildings for living in.

Space & Behaviour

It’s the architect’s duty to create an architecture that equip 3 kinds of function in space, like entertainment, education, cohesion.

Then do research about their behaviours and record in which these activities take place. Whether a community libraryis good or not depends on the efficiency that the resource been used. After the data collection, we can easily plan the function of architecture, which leads a more efficient way of using resource. In the end, the hottest zones are our community library is pursuing all the time.

Rent

In the public library work mode, it's all up to what kind of people are using the resource and are these resource fit them. It's nessesary to research the consistency of this community, I sort people into nie different types by age, jobs and spare time. They should be taken into considered whether they are likely to go to community library. Finally we get the percentage and the relative proportion.

A community library is far different from those in universities, well it’s open to the public who supposed to have different preference. That's why I focus on the area that different types of books that cover.

Except for the new technologies, there are some abstract reasons. Subjectivity shows up due to the fragmentation in globalizing world, and we need this subjectivity to meet the desire of tackling fragmentation. To many ideologists, there is nothing firm can be found in post modernism and we are all doomed to be decentralized. Fragmentation and flowing transmission structure have satisfied our need, a need of foraging unite and integrate during this digressing, exiling, disintetrating life. As one of the most important branch of art, architects, as well as other artists, have rights and duties to illustrate their internal thinking of environment we live in. Even those most objective-looking artists like documentary literature author or photographers have acheive their works on the basis of particular stance. For us architects who serve our clients, we supposed to be the most objective people in all projects for there are so many disciplines we have to wander around but not to break through, like urban context, history, financial limits, laws and traditional design pattern etc. However architects still have their particular unique interpretation of this world to be shouted out. The transmission structure is the pointcut for us to interpellate, whatever is form or the spatial arrangement.
