Executive Summary

To our friends and colleagues, Often it is easier to see the impact of many years of growth, investment and work by stepping back and looking at ten or more years of effort. Educators, non-profit leaders, and investment managers often point to their 5 or 10 year track record, as well as looking at the last twelve months. In philanthropy there is merit in looking at cumulative effort as well as this year’s highlights, particularly when the world has gone through an unusual period or a period of correction or change. Financially and economically, the world has changed in the last two years, and while the markets may rebound, the terrain has changed. We must now operate with new expectations and a somewhat different approach. Fortunately, despite the economic challenges, The Kohlberg Foundation has continued giving at roughly the same level as our portfolio recovered from the bumpy downturn. We are relatively lucky; we were able to fulfill all of our pledges and to support our longstanding grantees. We trimmed operating costs, but continued to make grants without hesitation. In 2009, we completed the 12 year cycle of the Vision Fund, and we pay tribute to all of the family and board members who enthusiastically worked to make this effort so worthwhile. The common purpose and action learning that grew out of this collaboration made this work rewarding, and the achievements of the organizations we supported are evidence that much was accomplished. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Now, beginning in 2009 and 2010 we will focus more intently on Legacy Giving that has emerged from the lifetime interests of our founders, Jerry and Nancy Kohlberg. In the 2009-10 portfolio we highlight a policy of placing emphasis on core projects where we know the organizations and their leaders very well. We will continue to work with them closely and form partnerships that reflect common values and a real understanding of their strategic plans. Some are old friends and some are new friends, but they are part of a strategy of lifelong giving that has deep roots for the Kohlbergs. In the last decade, the founders have contributed over $500 Million, both personally and through the Foundation, and this commitment will extend into the next decade as well.

University of Maryland Baltimore, School of Medicine Center for Integrative Medicine

This grant supports core operations and will develop dedicated space at the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus for the new Center for Integrative Medicine. The Center, led by Dr. Brian Berman, is a national leader in the use of integrative therapies and the policy work that will make holistic practice an accepted part of modern medicine. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Experts in providing care and advancing the diagnosis, treatment, and cure options for adult and pediatic cancers, Dana-Farber and its affiliate, The Jimmy Fund, located in Boston, MA were awarded grants to support prostate cancer research led by Dr. Philip Kantoff at the Lank Center for Genitourinary Oncology ($800,000); scholarships for their Pediatic Integrative Medicine program at the Zakim Center ($133,333); and participation in 2009 The Jimmy Fund Walk ($100,000).

Jacob Burns is an educational and cultural institution located in Pleasantville, NY dedicated to independent, documentary, and world cinema. This grant was awarded to support their Campaign for 21st Century Education initiative. The Center has built, both physically and programmatically, a new model for education and is rapidly becoming a hub for students of all ages and adults who are eager to tell their stories in new and different ways, enabling them to foster community dialogue and cross culture awareness that stems from their diverse film programs. “Taste of Animation” classes at the Media Arts Lab in Pleasantville, NY. This class reflects 6-9 year olds learning how to make a stop motion animated film.

The Jane Goodall Institute, located in Arlington, VA aims to empower people to make a difference for all living things. Working with young people to create positive social change through the Roots & Shoots program, this grant expands the program’s efforts in California and New England ($375,000) Funding was also awarded to support the Institute’s community-centered ecosystem conservation in Western Tanzania, which is accomplished through a combination of conservation, education, and the promotion of sustainable livelihoods in local African communities ($250,000)

Compassion and Choices, located in Denver, CO works to improve end-of-life care and choices to dying through education, advocacy and support services. This grant was awarded to advance their client services and advocacy efforts.
Energy Foundation

The Energy Foundation, located in San Francisco, CA is a partnership of major donors interested in promoting clean energy technologies to solve the world’s energy problems. This funding provided support for advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy through both policy and new technology.
Open Space Institute

Open Space Institute, located in New York City, protects scenic, natural, and historic landscapes through land acquisition, conservation easements, regional loan programs, fiscal sponsorships, creative partnerships, and analytical research. This grant was awarded to help support their Western Massachusetts Land Aggregation Project which seeks to protect more than 20,000 acres in the region by aggregating high priority parcel pieces and collaborate with the state, federal and philanthropic communities to leverage funding.

Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego

Rady Children’s Hospital , the only hospital dedicated solely to pediatric care in the San Diego area, was awarded a grant to support their integrative medicine programs for the hematology/oncology care center and chronic pain program ($250,000); and capital campaign support for the construction of a healing garden in the new Acute Care Pavilion ($250,000).

This grant was awarded to support Bill Moyers Journal programs. Bill Moyers in association with Public Affairs Television, Inc., works to advance democracy, free press and responsible media, the environment, and the progressive agenda in America. Through Bill Moyers Journal, he is able to bring progressive and democratic ideas to life using a variety of journalistic media. Bill Moyers with Jane Goodall - as a scientist and conservationist, Jane has produced landmark studies on the behavior of the chimpanzees in Tanzania’s Gombe National Park that led to revolutionary insights into what it means to be human. Her new book, “Hope for the Animals and Their World”, features the heroic work of men and women working across the globe to protect and preserve the Earth.

Philip Evans Foundation

The Martha’s Vineyard Vision Fellowship supports Martha’s Vineyard residents who are working in or pursuing careers related to the sustainability of the island. Areas of concentration include environmental conservation, healthcare, alternative energy, affordable housing and social services. Martha’s Vineyard Fellows and volunteers help with a beach cleanup on Long Point Beach.
Manhattanville College

A grant was awarded to support the Elizabeth J. McCormack Scholars program, established in 2004 to honor Elizabeth J. McCormack ($330,000). Dr. McCormack graduated from Manhattanville in 1944, served as the academic dean from 1962 to 1966 and as president from 1966 to 1974. The program provides need-based tuition, room and board, and access to opportunity grants for research, study abroad, volunteer and travel experiences. Manhattanville also received support for the Duchesne Center ($50,000). The Center serves as the coordinator, catalyst, and incubator for community outreach, culture, and leadership initiatives at the college.

The Food Project, located in Boston, MA works to create positive social change in the areas of youth development and sustainable agriculture by bringing together youth and adults from diverse backgrounds to build a sustainable food system. The Tariq Khamisa Foundation located in San Diego, CA is dedicated to breaking the cycle of youth violence by empowering young people, saving lives and teaching peace. This grant was awarded to support their Peace Empowerment Project, which focuses on best educational techniques and tools to promote non-violence in schools.

WiLDCOAST, located in Imperial Beach, CA protects and preserves coastal ecosystems and wildlife in the Californias and Latin America by building grassroots support, conducting media campaigns and establishing protected areas. This grant was awarded as capital campaign support for the construction of their new prisoner re-entry/transitional facility. Sponsors, Inc., located in Eugene, Oregon provides a variety of re-entry programs and services to the men and women of Lane County who are on parole and probation. They provide housing, case management, assistance with employment and schooling and practical support.
Boston Medical Center

Boston Medical Center, located in Boston’s historic South End neighborhood, is a notfor-profit academic medical center and the primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine. This grant was awarded to help the continued expansion of their Patient Navigation Program. The program guides cancer patients through complex treatment plans with a collaborative, coordinated system of patient-centered, culturally and linguistically competent services.
Island Affordable Housing Fund

The Housing Fund, located on Vineyard Haven, MA provides grants and loans to organizations, towns, developers, builders, or anyone with a proposal to create affordable year-round housing opportunities. Their work is designed to diminish or erase the affordability gap between what it costs to create housing and what year-round residents can afford to pay for housing. The single-family affordable housing they have funded has received a LEED platinum rating. This grant was awarded to support the 250 State Road affordable housing project which is surrounded by protected Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank land in West Tisbury. The goal for this project is to approach net-zero energy by obtaining all its energy from the sun.
Hudson River HealthCare, Inc.

Hudson River HealthCare, located in Peekskill, NY, is a network of sixteen community health centers located throughout New York’s Lower and Mid-Hudson Valley regions. This grant was awarded to provide support for their health programs and services for at-risk, uninsured population.

Slow Food USA, located in Brooklyn, NY, is a non-profit organization seeking to create dramatic and lasting change in the food system. They reconnect Americans with the people, traditions, plants, animals, fertile soils and waters that produce our food. This grant was awarded to support their US Youth Food Initiative/Youth Food Movement. This initiative represents the first international effort to unify and galvanize young people to align local and regional food systems with principles of justice and sustainability.
Great Pond Foundation

The Foundation, located in Edgartown, MA was formed to enhance the health and beauty of the Edgartown Great Pond by supporting solutions to environmental problems affecting it. Their focus is to help educate the public to the pond’s value and condition, and assist the town of Edgartown in enhancing its recreational and ecological features. This grant was awarded to assist the organization in implementing their nitrogen reduction dredging initiative to help reverse the effects of nitrogen pollution and restore the shellfish population. The dredge “Nessie” moored in a cove of Edgartown Great Pond before going to work.

Rocky Mountain Institute

Rocky Mountain Institute, located in Snowmass, CO is a small research institute dedicated to rethinking the picture of U.S. energy by driving the efficient and restorative use of resources. Their strategic focus is executed through specific initiatives designed to map and drive the transition from coal and oil to efficiency and renewables. This grant was awarded to support the Accelerating Campus Climate Initiatives program, specifically the development of a resource website and companion reference manual that offers practical information and solutions to those working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from college and university campus operations. This program was led by the Institute in collaboration with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), to accelerate and empower colleges and universities in pursuing vigorous programs to reduce their carbon footprint and mitigate climate change. They provide high quality, evidence-based psychological and physical support in a safe and comfortable setting. This grant was awarded to support the Garden’s expansion as well as the ARTS – Art and Research for Transcendence and Survival programs directed by Candace Anderson. Candace serves as an Artist-in-Residence for the Healing Garden, offering many opportunities for expressive therapy using art and nature.

Their approach is a comprehensive school reform framework set up as a performance-based system rather than a Carnegie unit or time-based system. This grant was awarded to help support their Delivering on the Promise Through Distance Learning initiative. This initiative provides technical assistance to school districts utilizing interactive tools and processes that focus on improving the use of teaching methods tailored to individual students. Selected school districts in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, and Illinois are in various stages of implementation.

The Alliance received this grant in support of their Judicial Selection Project which focuses on promoting a national discussion on the selection of federal judges. Through this project, the Alliance supports the Senate in its advice and consent role in the confirmation process and involves the public and the media in the process of selecting judges at all levels of the federal judiciary.

In collaboration with surrounding agencies, the Center offers daily on-site help and referrals for housing and homelessness, domestic violence, immigration issues, medical and mental health as well as for alcohol and drug dependency.
