Hiawassee held its first fair in 1950, a three-day agricultural exposition held at the local high school. Attendees numbered 2,000-actually an impressive number for such a tiny town. Swan Drive-In Theater_______________ Nothing was more exciting to me when I was a little girl than when, on a Saturday night, the family would pile into my dad’s Impala and we’d go to McDonald’s for dinner (back when the sign bragged “Millions and Millions Sold”) and then to a drive-in movie. I saw some of my all-time favorite movies at the drive-in: The Sting, Bad News Bears, Rocky, and the classic, American Graffiti--that loving paean to the golden days when the drive-in theatre was a fixture on the American landscape. Fast-forward a few years, and you might find me on the way in to the very same drive-in, only this time crammed into the trunk of a friend’s car, another friend jammed next to me (imagine me trying that now?!?). Too broke to pay for a whole carload, we’d smuggle as many kids as we could in a trunk or storage compartment. Unlike my younger years, I don’t think I saw much of whatever movie was playing, but one thing remained the same...I always had a blast! Once I reached adulthood, drive-in theatres, like my father’s Impala, got filed away under “Fond Memories.” Little did I know that one day I would wind up in a wonderful town where the drive-in theatre (alas, not the Impala) is still very much a fixture of modern life.
Finally, with the daunting task of excavating and grading behind them, Jack and H were able to move forward with the relatively simple tasks of wiring for sound, paving, and building the concession stand and box office. One final-and formidable-obstacle stood between the two men and the completion of their dream: the erecting of the movie screen itself. After piecing the screen together on the ground, the men had to go all the way to Atlanta (no easy task in those days before the Georgia Mountain Parkway provided a quick and easy way to make the journey!) to get a crane tall enough and powerful enough to raise the screen. For $100, Jack and H were able to get a crane for hire from Atlanta Steel Erectors. As an excited throng of locals looked on nervously, the pieces of the screen were lifted and pieced together, until, finally, the last section was carefully lowered into place. The on-lookers let out a relieved whoop and, with that, Jack and H’s dream became a reality. H Tilley was the one to come up with the name for the drive-in. Prior to taking part in the Omaha Beach Landing in the Normandy Invasion during World War II, H was stationed in England. While there, he came to admire the graceful and beautiful swans that swam in the ponds and lakes around the country. He thought SWAN would be the perfect name for his newest theatre. His partner, Jack, agreed--it would be an easy name to make into a neon sign. The opening of the Swan Drive-In Theatre was a watershed event in Blue Ridge, as it served as a beacon, drawing people from small communities all across the North Georgia mountains. The Swan Drive-In Theatre in Blue Ridge, Georgia was built in 1955 by Jack Jones, Sr. and W.H. Tilley, Jr.-known as “H.” Jack and H already owned the small town’s two theaters--the Rialto and the Royal, where ticket prices were 32 cents for adults and 15 cents for children and a Saturday matinee ran 25 cents for adults and ten cents for children. Because televisions were scarce up in the mountains, business was brisk at the two theaters. Looking to serve an ever-growing audience hungry for movies, the two men seized on the idea of opening a drive-in theatre. This was no small feat in Blue Ridge, nestled as it is in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Tracts of land level enough and large enough to accommodate the special topographical needs of a drive-in were scarce as hen’s teeth. Undaunted, Jack and H were able to lease several acres from the City of Blue Ridge. There was still a considerable amount of grading and fill to be done and once the work had begun, they encountered unyielding rock that only dynamite would budge. Discouraged and almost ready to scrap the mission, they were encouraged to keep on going by the excavators that were working for them.
Postscript: H Tilley sold his share of the business to Jack Jones in 1959, who continued to operate it for many years. Mr. Jones passed away in 1980. H Tilley is retired and still lives with his family in Blue Ridge. Steve Setser now owns and operates the Swan Drive-In Theater. He began working there when he was 15, and finally bought it in 1989. I would like to offer a special thanks to Mrs. H (Blanch) Tilley for so graciously speaking with me about the beginnings of Blue Ridge’s Swan Drive-In Theatre.

Can Your Existing Home Be More Energy Efficient?__________ Many people ask me if they can make their existing home more energy efficient. The answer is: “YES, YOU CAN!” These changes can make the home more comfortable, save the owner money, and make it more valuable, easier to sell. While it is easier to make improvements in the home while planning, there are many ways to make it more efficient if it is built. Let’s focus on what can be done right now to reduce air conditioning costs and make your home more comfortable in the summer. Air conditioning is where most people spend the majority of their summer electricity bill. Your air conditioner can cool more efficiently if it is tuned up. Make sure the air filters are clean. Have your unit serviced by an expert. A slight adjustment in the refrigerant pressure might save you a lot of money. If your unit is more than ten years old, it might be worthwhile to replace it with a new, more efficient unit. The reduction in your electric bill might be more than the payment on your new system. But before you have your system replaced, let’s consider making your house more efficient. If you make these other changes, your new unit could be smaller, and less expensive. Many homes could benefit from shading the glass. Walk around the outside of your home the next sunny afternoon. Is a lot of the glass in the hot sun? That glass is making your home uncomfortable and increasing your air conditioning costs. While low e glass helps, it is much better to keep the sun off the glass. A well planned window awning could shade the glass during the summer and save you a lot of money. Another nice shading device is a deciduous tree. It would automatically shade your home every year during the hot seasons. Another big energy loss in many homes is air leakage. When I bring this up many caution me that you “should not make the home too air tight.” Not true! Tests show that air leakage through walls, floors, and ceilings is the source of many air quality problems, even causing mold. You don’t want to rely on leaky construction for air ventilation. There’s a lot of nasty stuff hidden inside the walls of your home! If your home is made air tight, your energy costs will go down. Then install an air ventilation system with your air conditioner to provide clean, fresh air. What about solar panels? At this time the best solar system for most is a solar water heater. They reduce the monthly expenses of many families, even including the cost of the panels. Solar electric panels are also improving. You might be able to sell electricity to the power company. Many are considering a net zero home, a home that generates as much electricity as it uses. Of course the best place to start is making the home more efficient. By reducing the amount of electricity you need you could get by with fewer solar panels. Your net zero home would cost much less!
There is no single “magic solution” for every home. Each is unique. An energy study is a great place to start. This study can identify the worst problems, and where you can spend the least money to get the most improvement. This study might point you to incentives and tax credits to help pay for these improvements. Benefits for homeowners include: Added Confidence: Home buying is complex enough without having to know all the details of energy-efficient construction. Instead, look for the government-backed ENERGY STAR label to easily identify homes that are truly energy efficient. Find the house of your dreams and enjoy peace of mind knowing that it also meets strict energy efficiency guidelines. Lower Ownership Costs: Compared with standard homes, ENERGY STAR qualified homes use substantially less energy for heating, cooling, and water heating-delivering $200 to $400 in annual savings. Over the average 7 to 8 years you may live in your home, this adds up to thousands of dollars saved on utility bills. Additional savings on maintenance can also be substantial. Financing your home purchase using an energy efficient mortgage can also lead to savings. Better Performance: Properly installed energy-efficient improvements deliver better protection against cold, heat, drafts, moisture, pollution, and noise. An energy-efficient home helps ensure consistent temperatures between and across rooms, improved indoor air quality, and greater durability. Smart Investment: To date, more than 6,500 home builders have partnered with EPA to construct nearly 940,000 ENERGY STAR qualified homes. The trend is clear.
