Located just 90 minutes from downtown Atlanta, Lake Blue Ridge is one of the most picturesque mountain lakes with its crystal blue and sapphire green granite waters completely surrounded by mountain views. The 3,290-acre lake and surrounding area offers boating, swimming, hiking, camping, picnicking, water skiing, and fishing. It boast over 90 national forest campsites, several boat ramps, a full-service marina and public swimming and picnic areas. Morganton Point Campground features a public swimming area along with 43 campsites, picnic tables, a pavilion and a boat ramp. Another boat ramp is available at Lakewood Landing near Morganton. The Lake Blue Ridge Marina offers boat ramp access on a fee basis, along with pontoon rentals. Approximately 80 percent of the shoreline on Lake Blue Ridge is in the Chattahoochee National Forest and is managed by the USDA Forest Service, which protects it from being over developed and ensures property values for lake front owners. The reservoir of Blue Ridge Lake is 11 miles long and has 65 miles of shoreline, 25 percent of which is developed. The lake was formed when Blue Ridge Dam was constructed on the Toccoa River in 1930 by the Toccoa Electric Power Company. At the time it was built, the dam was the largest earthen dam in the Southeast. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) purchased the facility in 1939 for hydroelectric power production. Except for a few water skiers, most of the visitors come to camp and fish. The lake is home to

bass, bream, catfish, perch and crappie, which makes the area popular with anglers. It is the only lake south of the Great Lakes where Walleye are caught, and is also known for white bass fishing. Thirtyfive fish attractors— man-made feeding covers—have been scattered around the coves and creeks. A Georgia Fishing License is required, although a trout stamp is not. Lake Blue Ridge is fed by the northflowing Toccoa River. The river flows soothingly for about 15 miles north of the dam. The dam-runoff from the reservoir provides great trout fishing. Fishermen should only wade fish the Toccoa River below the dam when TVA is not generating electricity. The Toccoa River becomes hazardous quickly when they release, so be sure to check the dam release schedule before planning your trip. At the Tennessee state line the river changes its name to the Ocoee and turns into one of the Southeast’s most spirited whitewater streams for rafting and kayaking and was the home of the Centennial Olympic Games kayaking venue and visitors center. Homes on Lake Blue Ridge range from a few hundred thousand to several million dollars. Homes are a mixture of both secondary homes, for many residents out of the Metro Atlanta area in addition to Florida residents who spend weekends and holidays enjoying the lake recreation, as well as primary homes.

Beautiful Lake Chatuge is nestled between two states and the two mountain towns of Hiawassee, Georgia and Hayesville, North Carolina. Lake Chatuge is known for its amazing mountain views especially at sunset. The place “where the water dogs laughed” is how Cherokee legend described the Tusquittee area. A part of the Nantahala National Forest in Clay County, North Carolina, it is one of the most scenic lakes in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) water system. This pristine lake, exquisitely nestled between the Tusquittee Mountains named “the Great Blue Hills of God,” by the Cherokee, is ideal for fishing, swimming, boating and camping. Visitors enjoy casual walks along the dam with its spectacular view of the lake and surrounding mountains. The lake has numerous outcrops of land forming private coves that are for great fishing, swimming, boating, and water sports. The fishing is great with more than 32 species in the lake. Lake Chatuge is a 7,500 acre man-made reservoir that began in 1941 and was completed in 1942 after the Tennessee Valley Authority finished construction on Chatuge Dam, which blocked the Hiwassee River in North Carolina in order to institute a system of flood control and provide usable hydroelectric power. The dam is 144 feet high and stretches 2,850 feet across the Hiwassee River. When water from Chatuge Dam was released and diverted, it filled up naturally variegated terrain in North Georgia and created Lake Chatuge’s numerous peninsulas and private coves with magnificent locations for swimming, boating and other water sports. The unsurpassed beauty of the lake created by Chatuge Dam inspired people to name North Georgia’s valley that contains Lake Chatuge the Enchanted Valley. On the north side of the Enchanted Valley are mammoth mountain ranges in the Nantahala National Forest and on the south and east sides are the peaks of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Lake Chatuge is

situated in the center of the Enchanted Valley with 128 miles of lake shoreline plus 4 miles of island shoreline for a total of 132 miles of enjoyable lake shores. In a year with normal rainfall, the water level in Chatuge Reservoir varies about 10 feet from summer to winter to provide seasonal flood storage. The Chatuge Reservoir has a flood-storage capacity of 62,600 acre-feet. This beautifully forested region is contained within Towns County, an area filled with secluded waterfalls, historic trails, and quaint towns with unique stores and restaurants. The two cities in North Georgia located nearest Lake Chatuge are Hiawassee and Young Harris. Jackrabbit Mountain Recreation Area on Lake Chatuge is located on a pine-wooded peninsula with hiking trails that offer delightful views of Lake Chatuge making it a popular family recreation area. Clay County Recreation Park is also a hit with families. This area has bathrooms, picnic facilities, a sand beach and a shore-side fenced playground for the little ones. Many boaters like to pull up along the shore for a break from the sun and enjoy of bit of land time for lunch. The entire region surrounding Lake Chatuge is famous for year round trout fishing in numerous streams and rivers. Fishing licenses are required. A great way to have fun exploring Lake Chatuge is to enjoy a leisurely cruise on a pontoon boat. Pontoon boats and other recreational boats can be rented at various marinas on Lake Chatuge. One of the finest resorts in the North Georgia Mountains is located near Lake Chatuge and it has become one of the big reasons why tourists come to the area.
