World’s Largest Sorghum Festival! October 10th-11th & 17th-18th
The North Georgia Mountains, home of the World’s Largest Sorghum Festival, this year celebrates the 40th Annual Sorghum Festival located in Blairsville, GA (Union County). Union County’s longest running festival celebrates the ancient art of cooking sweet syrup from sorghum cane. In early October the farmers of the Blue Ridge mountains start cutting and stripping the cane - and before November comes, thousands of gallons of the best syrup in the world are ready to enjoy. Visitors will enjoy sorghum syrup making demonstrations in addition to Country Music ~ Bar-B-Que Meals ~ 5K Road Race ~ Car Show ~ Sorghum Parade ~ Biscuit Eating’ Contest ~ Pole

Apples, Apples Everywhere... October 10th-11th & 17th-18th
The Georgia Apple Festival Celebration centers on the apple, which was introduced into the county in the early 1900’s. The apple saved Gilmer County from the devastation of the boll weevil. The boll weevil, from 1922 until 1925, swept throughout the state wrecking not only the cotton crop, but local economies as well. Gilmer County farmers had introduced the apple as a crop in the early 1900’s and by the time of the boll weevil infestation the county had sufficient income from apples to offset at least part of the damage done by the insect. Apples are definitely at the heart of the Georgia Apple Festival. They have apple fritters, fried pies (that would be apple turnovers to you northerners) and many other apple treats for the apple of your eye, but there are other facets of The Georgia Apple Festival.
There are over 300 vendors with handmade, hand-crafted items, as well as many on-site demonstrations of how selected types of crafts are made. This year promises many new crafts as well as favorites from past festivals. There is a parade and antique car show each year. The festival includes a fun area for the kids. Looking for entertainment? How about a wide variety of acts? Everything from cloggers to country music, gospel to rock and roll. Its all here at the Georgia Apple Festival in Ellijay. Don’t miss out! Georgia Mountain Fall Festival October 9th-17th The Georgia Mountain Fall Festival features craft booths, food stands, daily music concerts, demonstrations of mountain life, and various children’s activities. Besides the usual fare, visitors can buy fried apple pies, fresh-squeezed cider, smoked trout, beef jerky, and home-cooked vegetable plates. Anderson Music Hall is the place to find talent such as clogging, Nashville musicians and string bands. It is also the home of the ever-popular Georgia’s Official State Fiddlers’ Convention. A Pioneer Village features a one-room schoolhouse, a smokehouse, a gristmill that grinds out fresh cornmeal daily and a working blacksmith shop. Local folks show how to split rails, how to make oak shingles and baskets, and how to cook up a cauldron of hominy or a batch of lye soap. Displays of canned goods, handmade quilts, and needlecraft are featured in the fair museum.
For a number of years the fair also featured a working moonshine still. The Exhibition Hall is an extremely eclectic collection of items from local businesses and homes that illustrate life in the Georgia Mountains before present-day. Some of the unique displays are cash registers, knife sharpeners, old washers (the kind with a ringer on the top), an upright piano and a Linotype machine. The Antique Farm Museum houses a wide variety of equipment spanning nearly two centuries of farming in the north Georgia Mountains including a thrashing machine, baler, and milk-bottling machine. The hall also has many of the internal combustion vehicles on display. The sawmill at the Georgia Mountain Fall Festival recreates the traditional sawmill of the mid 1800’s with men turning logs with traditional equipment of the period (but powered by electricity) including a circular saw. Make plans to visit the fair this October. We are sure you will not be disappointed.
“An Appalachian Mountain Tradition” October 3rd-4th The John C. Campbell Folk School provides experiences in non-competitive learning and community life that are joyful and enlivening. Located in scenic Brasstown, North Carolina, the Folk School offers adults more than 800 weeklong and weekend classes year-round in traditional and contemporary craft, art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, nature studies, photography and writing.
