Local Vineyard Awarded 2009 Honors ________ Young Harris, GA -- Crane Creek’s

2007 Seyval Blanc won a silver medal at the largest competition of American wines in the world - the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition! No other Seyval Blanc performed better at the competition. Crane Creek was also honored with a bronze medal for their 2006 Hellbender Red made from Norton grapes. The 2009 professional wine judging took place at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair during the week of January 5, 2009. Professional wine judges representing trade, education, media, retail, and restaurants throughout the United States evaluated a record 4,736 wines entered by wineries from across the country. Crane Creek Vineyards sits high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia, just three miles north of the quaint college town of Young Harris in the shadow of Brasstown Bald, the state’s highest peak. The perfect complement to Crane Creek’s vineyards and winery is their culinary garden which provides a bounty of produce transformed into of-the-moment, wine-friendly creations by Chef David Sanford. In addition, their small apple orchard features a wide variety of old heirloom and antique North Georgia apple varieties, some of them being quite rare. Each fall this bounty of apples is transformed into pies, cider, and other tasty offerings. Add their small flock of free range chickens and Guinea hens, which produce a steady supply of farm fresh eggs, to round out their “sideline” agricultural activities. There are also two rental cottages. The owners, Eric and DeAnne Seifarth, invite you to have a glass, wander about and enjoy an afternoon Tuesday Saturday (April - December) 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Fairy Crosses__________________________ by Dawn McGuire

T

wo thousand years ago, so the Cherokee legend of Fairy Crosses begins. The “Yunwi Tsunsdi,” or Little People, lived in the beautiful mountains of what is now North Georgia and Western North Carolina. Shy and elusive creatures, the Little People were revered throughout the Cherokee Nation for their ability to find people lost in the thickly forested mountains of the region. One evening, while the Little People were enjoying an enchanted celebration of dance, music and song, a foreign messenger arrived bearing the sad news of the Crucifixion of the Son of the Great Creator. So touched were the Little People upon hearing the news of the loss of one so great, they were moved to tears. As their tears fell to the ground, they turned into Fairy Crosses, where they can be found to this day. The scientific -- and much less romantic name -- for the Fairy Cross is staurolite, from the Greek word stauros, meaning cross. Staurolite is found in rocks that have been subjected to enormous heat and pressure. A composite of iron, aluminum and silica, staurolite occurs when these three materials crystallize, often forming a cross-shape. No two Fairy Crosses are the same. Each has its own unique shape, most commonly broken down into three categories: The Maltese Cross-a perfectly formed cross that is the most difficult to find and thus most highly prized by collectors. The second is the more common Saint Andrews Cross, a more angled cross rather than a horizontal and vertical shaped cross. And the third is the Prismatic Cross, while less than perfectly shaped, it is in the form of a cross, and is the most common and readily found variety. Long prized as good luck talismans, Fairy Crosses have been carried by Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, as well as Thomas A. Edison and Charles Lindbergh. In 1976, staurolite was named Georgia’s state mineral. Fannin County -- along with a few other areas of the Southern Appalachians -is one of relatively few places in the world where Fairy Crosses are naturally occurring. Rock hounds from around the globe visit Blue Ridge in the hopes of finding the perfect specimen.

You buy a cabin in the beautiful North Georgia mountains to escape from the stresses and worries of your life in the city. There are some simple steps you can take to make sure that your cabin is one step closer to being worry-free by cutting down on needlessly high energy costs. And almost all of them are easy enough that you can tackle them yourself in a weekend. One of the biggest -- and simplest -- steps you can take is to invest in a programmable thermostat. You can set the thermostat so that the heat and air conditioning maintain minimum temperatures during the week, and then automatically adjust to the temperature you’re most comfortable with at, say, 7 p.m. on Friday. You should easily be able to recoup your initial investment on a $100 Energy Star© programmable thermostat within the first year. The next step is a little more labor intensive, but still easy enough. Feel for drafts around windows and doors and replace any caulking and weatherstripping around them that is cracked or broken. Also, be sure to check all ductwork. For those that have true log cabins, you will also want to check the caulking around the logs, as natural shifting takes place that can open up tiny openings. This may be a project you choose to contract out. A fireplace is an almost universal feature in a second

home. If it is a wood-burning one, make sure that you close the flue when the fireplace is not in use, and most certainly before you leave the cabin for the week. Also, make sure to have it inspected and cleaned at the start of each season. This not only can help save energy, but is also important for safety reasons -- a fire is lovely in the fireplace, and in the fireplace only! Next, turn the thermostat on your water heater down to 130, or ideally, 120, which is still hot enough for that nice hot shower. Make sure to check the air filters for your heating and cooling system and replace them as needed. The last -- and simplest -- step is to unplug stuff. Most appliances still use a considerable amount of energy on ‘stand-by’ mode. By unplugging your TV, DVR, stereo and microwave before you leave the cabin for the week you can save a considerable amount of energy over the course of the year. There you have it...A weekend’s worth of work, and you’ve saved a bundle. I know, I know...the point of the cabin is so you don’t have to work, but do this little bit and you won’t have to work as hard at your ‘day job’ to pay for your energy bills. It’ll be worth it. The Word For Sellers is “Neutralize” Advice for Sellers_______________________

Having worked in remodeling and renovation plus custom home construction in the Atlanta market from 1988 until eight years ago when we moved our operation to Towns County, Hallam Construction Services, Inc. has worked with many REALTORS® and their clients on the buyer and seller sides of the market. We were frequently asked to consult with a seller on ways to make their home most attractive to potential buyers. And “neutralize” became the term used most to describe what sellers need to do. Over the years, we learned there are specific things a seller can do to maximize buyer interest: 1. If the seller’s home has accent walls or entire rooms with vibrant colors -- dark red, deep blue, etc. -- “neutralizing” with an overcoat of a neutral light color is more likely to appeal to buyers. 2. If the seller’s home is filled with fabulous antiques and lots of collectibles, that’s great for the seller. But, what happens when the minimalist or modern buyers walks in the door? We’ve advised folks to pack up collectibles and remove especially heavy furniture pieces. The seller should “neutralize” dense furniture placement so that room sizes appear larger. 3. General “neutralizing” also includes clearing “stuff” off the kitchen and bath countertops, and packing up personal photographs, as well as removing refrigerator magnets. 4. Pets! There are dog people and there are cat people-- and believe it or not there are “no pet people”. The seller must “neutralize” pet odor and remove their pets when showings occur. Food and water bowls should be put up during showings as well. Some

buyers have a real fear that if they smell pet odor it may be soaked into carpets and they won’t be able to get rid of it. And some people are allergic to pets. 5. Kids! The baby’s room may be just darling. But, a buyer needs to see the room as potential for something other than a nursery. The same goes for the kids room with poster on the wall. 6. Bigger Stuff! In this competitive market sellers may have to upgrade some items in order to compete with other sellers in their price range. The REALTOR® can introduce the seller to a licensed contractor to get estimates for improvements to kitchens and baths that may be necessary in order for the seller to get their asking price. The contractor can walk through with the seller and address small things as well -- a broken deck board, a sticking door, a broken door knob, a plumbing leak, or cracked and fading paint on the front door, etc. A list can be made and these items repaired before a buyer has the house under contract and sends in a home inspector. This can frequently overcome last minute problems when you are heading for the closing table. The serious seller can help their REALTOR® get a contract from a buyer by paying attention to “neutralizing” their residence in preparation for the selling cycle.
