Summer in Your Hometown
S
ummer has this unique way of reminding us of how things used to be. Whether it was summer camp filled with playing red rover and doing chubby bunny competitions, or hours and hours spent chasing the sunset on our bicycles with all the neighbor kids, summertime as a child was simply magical. Traditions emerged year after year and gave me something to anticipate, while the rhythm of the year seemed to always settle in and relax during those precious few months of no school. Growth happened in ways it couldn’t during the other 9 months of the year, but somehow life showed up in ways that would set us up for a lifetime of adventure.
KELSEY WALLEN
M A N AG I N G E D I TO R
As we head into these precious few months, I encourage you to slow down. Take a deep breath. Engage in a last-minute adventure. Learn about someone you don’t know. Make a new tradition. Explore a new part of your hometown. Eat food that warms your soul. Soak in all that summertime has for you. Summer is ready and waiting for you to make it something you always remember.

onveniently located in Central Texas, overlooking beautiful Lake Brownwood, the 4-H Conference Center serves as a great camp for kids and much more. With plenty of room for large groups, the Center offers the perfect place to host company retreats, meetings, conferences and reunions. For 45 consecutive years, Lake Brownwood 4-H Center has opened, even in 2020. For the kids in Texas, it’s the best summer camp ever.

Director Melvin E. Atkinson brings a rich experience and an engaging excitement to 4-H, camping, leadership and hosting the Conference Center. “As the only 4-H Camp in Texas, the camp hosts thousands of youth each summer. Some youth come to spend their first night away from home. Others attend to make new friends or to learn new skills. We believe that the camp experience is essential to every child’s growth and education. Through positive child development and partnering with parents,

we encourage children to value their uniqueness and to understand and appreciate their part in the larger community. We help children develop self-esteem, character, courage, responsibility, resourcefulness, and cooperation. 4-H is one of the premier youth development organizations in the world. Through our safe, inclusive camp programs children develop the healthy emotional and social skills necessary to grow into strong, considerate, competent adults. We have specialty camps that provide in-depth specific subject matter, and we also have camps that provide introductory levels.” Brooklyn Howell, a 6th grade 4-H’er from Comal County, attended Prime Time II in 2020 and said, “I can’t wait to go back,” Howell added. “I just want to thank the camp staff because they did a really good job.” 4-H camp is a pillar summer activity across the nation. According to Director Melvin Atkinson, Texas’ 4-H Confer-
ence Center is one of the best. “In 2021, the new Program Director Tyler Cheely brings new excitement to the 4-H camps with fun and education. Our 4-H camp experience provides children with the opportunity to learn powerful lessons in community, character-building, skill development, and healthy living — a meaningful, engaged, and participatory environment. Camp promotes community. It creates this great space that shows kids how to live together and care for one another. Camp teaches critical thinking, it embraces the natural environment. 4-H camp creates future leaders and it has a lasting impact. One of the greatest gifts you can give a child is a sense of success and achievement. Camp teaches kids how to be active participants, ask questions, ask for help and try new things.” Kaleigh Meador attended many leadership retreats while serving on the 4-H state board. Currently, she pursues a de-
gree in Agriculture Media and Communications at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. “The 4-H Center truly has some of the best camp counselors and leaders in the state and I’m thankful for the experience. Some of my closest friendships were made during my time there. After attending Brownwood 4-H Center as a district council member, and then again as a state council member, I left with an even bigger love for Texas 4-H.” County Extension Agent Maranda Revell, from Archer County, is reliving her years at the Center through her daughter. “It’s been 19 years since I came to the Texas 4-H Center for the first time. I’ve been there nearly 75 times. This summer I brought my daughter Gatlynn. I think it’s safe to say she loves it as much as I do!” More than a summer camp, the Conference Center also offers facilities for retreats and seminars for modern-day
executives. It is a full-service conference and retreat center that can provide complete dining services and meeting rooms to accommodate groups as small as 15 to as large as 300 for daytime or overnight use. Wireless internet service is available throughout the facility at no additional charge and there’s easy parking. For some, like Bob Cappallo, a client of Executive Outfitters, the rewards of using the Texas 4-H Conference Center on Lake Brownwood were especially exciting. “There are super accommodations, the food was excellent and we had a great dove hunt.” “The Texas 4-H Center at Lake Brownwood has spacious and clean rooms,” Colleen Dyroff of Breckenridge, Texas, said. “The grounds are well kept and have a lake view. The cafeteria ladies were all smiling and the food was excellent. This made our ladies retreat great from the moment we walked in the door.” As a state officer and a district di-

rector for District 2 of Texas Extension Education Association, Jan Meador has attended state board meetings at the Conference Center. She reports, “A place of beauty, serenity, and camping fun, the 4-H Center is also great for family reunions and other events.” With five kids and fourteen grandchildren, the Meador family are 4-H experienced. Costs of camp are very affordable, allowing access to all families. "Camp costs fluctuate depending on the length and cost of each camp, and range from $200-$300,” Atkinson added. “We also partner with our local 4-H offices and partnering agencies to provide financial assistance. Our camps are open to everyone in Texas. You don’t have to be a 4-H member to attend our camping programs. Some of our camps are age-specific, so check the details on the website. We also have three additional camps this year that are open to military dependents.” People from all over the state come into Brownwood for 4-H Camp and other conference and business events held at the Center, providing an economic contribution to the local economy, estimated at 2.09 million dollars in 2019. So the question is, do I recommend Texas Center at Lake Brownwood and the 4-H Camp? Ann Daugherty answered the question best. "Yes, I do! I first came to 4-H camp as a young child in Bangs, Texas. Later, I attended camp as an FHA member at
Bangs High School. Later still, I got involved with Extension Club in Grayson County, where I now live...from the local club to the State Board where I visited the center, what a full circle I have made.” One of Daugherty’s best memories was helping fund the handicap room (or one of them) at the center. “For several years I continued to support our County Agent, teaching classes and spending quality days and nights at the Center. I have been privileged to present several Texas Center event scholarships to deserving 4-H kids over the years. That has been a highlight of my life.” Texas 4-H Center located at 5600 FM 3021 in Brownwood is open Monday-Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Greenleaf Fisk donated land on Pecan Bayou for the new settlement that became Brownwood from a land grant received for his participation in the Texas Revolution. He is known as the “Father of Brownwood.” Brownwood was named for Texas Ranger Henry Stephen Brown. In 1872, the small hamlet consisted of two stores, a log courthouse and about five houses. One of the log cabins is on exhibition in the museum, having been dismantled at its original site and reassembled at the museum. One can see the living condition of the early settlers. The sparsely settled area was a hotbed for outlaws. In 1903, the old jail was built, looking much like a small castle. The sheriff and his family lived on the first floor and prisoners were kept on the second floor. The sheriff’s wife not only fed her family but provided meals for the prisoners. One day a visitor stopped and asked her why she hung her laundry from the second-floor window. It turned out to be an attempted escape by a prisoner. Thanks to the efforts of Pat Coursey, the old jail is now one of the interesting exhibits at the museum, and the impetus for the Brownwood County Museum of History. Museum board member Ronnie Lappe and his brother Donnie Lappe, arranged to have the first schoolhouse in Brown County moved to the museum. It was built by the black community for their children—a

weathered construct with a rusty tin roof, the inside has been staged to look much like it did when children came there to learn. The “Roaring Twenties” was a watershed moment in history. When the “Doughboys” returned after fighting the Hun in Europe, they didn’t go back to the farm.
They stayed in cities and got a paycheck every week, instead of when the crops came in. Consumerism ensued. They bought ready-to-wear clothing and electrical appliances. They bought radios. Now, after a day’s work instead of milking the cow and feeding the chickens, they could listen to music from the Grand Ole Opry or laugh with Amos ‘n’ Andy. In tribute to the era, the Brown County Museum of History created an incredible exhibit of radios, phonographs, and pianos, that showcases a time when leisure was introduced to the masses. The exhibit allows visitors to play music from the 20s using push-button audio devices and feel the vibrations that set their great-grandparent’s toes to tapping. The Kid’s Zone has hands-on activities for all ages of children. A particular favorite is the large, sand-filled table with buried fossils. Children get to run their hands through the grainy sand and search for relics from eons past. Brown County has become a magnet for paleontologists from around the globe. Three kinds of fossils have been found in the region that have not been found in any other part of the world. The area around Photo by MC Square Photography

Lake Brownwood has been good hunting for the fossil searchers. In addition to the fossils in the Kid’s Zone, a further exhibit is on display for adults. When it became obvious that America had to go to war in 1940, a site was chosen, and 15,000 men clamored to Brownwood to build one of the largest training bases in the world: Camp Bowie. You can almost feel the excitement of flags waving and bugles sounding when you see the tribute on display at the museum to those who fought in WWII. Named for famed Alamo defender, James Bowie, a century before, the camp would train men for combat from 19401946. Camp Bowie was an important training facility for a quarter-of-a-million men and women attached to the 36th Division of the Texas National Guard. On October 1, 1946, the flag came down for the last time at Camp Bowie. During the war, German POWs were sent to climates like those they were taken from. Our men and women fought against “the desert fox” General Erwin Rommel in Africa. The prisoners were sent to Camp Bowie, where the weather was similar. At one time there were 6,000 German POWs at the camp. The museum tells the story in pictures and mem22

orabilia of the time the young men of Germany spent in Texas. They grew their own produce and worked on surrounding farms and ranches. They attended classes and enjoyed sports. And, they had a ration of beer. Touched by the kindness they received at the hands of their captors, many returned over the years to experience Texas hospitality as free men. One returned his POW shirt for the museum’s exhibit. A group of POWs painted a mural, 20’ x 7,’ depicting a battle scene from North Africa. The mural is being restored to be included in the war exhibit. Tylene Wilson found a page in history when the boys and men between 18-45 marched off to WWII. As Assistant Principal of Brownwood High School, Wilson didn’t want the male students to feel that the only thing they had to look forward to was following their brothers and fathers off to war, so she volunteered to coach the team. It was not without resistance though. Many rebuked her for taking on an all-male role, but Wilson loved football and was determined to keep the lives of those at home as normal as possible. Marjorie Herrera Lewis immortalized Wilson writing a novel based on her life, When the Men Were Gone. Lewis’ first choice was to write a biography, but failing to find sufficient material, she opted for a novel to fill in the blanks. The book has won several awards. Brownwood is proud of its people and its rich and varied history can be found within the walls of the museum.

Brown County

A
n old TV commercial featured a cowboy who would ask the viewer how long it’s been since they had a steaming bowl of the chili featured in the ad. He’d then say, “Well, pardner, that’s too long.” The same could be said of the Brown County Rodeo, which is returning this year after skipping 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic - as did many events across the nation. Not since 2019 have bulls bucked off riders or muttons been busted by youngsters at the Earl Wilson Arena at the Brown County Fairgrounds, and folks are ready to once again get their rodeo on when the 57th version of the event takes place Thursday-Saturday, June 3-5. “It’s great to have it back, and we’ve added so many new and exciting things,” said BC Rodeo Chairman Brent Moseley. “Last year was an extremely hard call, but the committee and myself decided it would be in the best interest to call it off. The pandemic had only been going on about three months, and many businesses were at only about 25 percent capacity. June of 2020 was still fairly fresh, and people were suffering more then than now.” Among the aforementioned new and exciting items at the rodeo this year is a carnival that will run May 31 through June 5, along with a youth calf scramble, Moseley said. They’re also bringing back the Market and Trade Days market that was started two years before last year’s hiatus and will run from 4-8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday inside the Home Economics Building.

“Within 10 days we were sold out (for vending space). That’s real exciting to have, and it’s more for kids and families to enjoy,” Moseley said. Moseley and his family have a long history with the rodeo. He is well into his second decade as rodeo chairman, a position his dad, the late Terry Moseley, held for many years as Brent grew up watching and learning. “I can brag about my dad. He did a fantastic job. Everything I know I learned from him,” Brent said. Brent took over as chairman shortly after the death of his father (it wasn’t an immediate transition from father to son). Still, he remembers fondly something that he and his late father shared posthumously. “My dad was chairman for the 25th rodeo and I was chairman for the 50th. I think that’s pretty cool,” he said. Entertainment during the rodeo will be familiar to locals. Cowboy Kenny Bartram and his motocross troop from Oklahoma are making a return. “They’ll jump 50 feet in the air and literally let go of the motorcycle,” Moseley said with excitement. “If you’ve never seen them it’s something really great. Folks around here will be excited to see them back. I know I am.” As for the rodeo itself, the most popular event, as with most rodeos, is the bull riding, Moseley said. “No doubt. People want to see wrecks, buckoffs,” he said. “And it is exciting. Some are barrel racing fans, roping fans, etc., but everybody likes the bull riding. It’s by far the most popular event.” Speaking of bulls, the producers of the rodeo, Andrews Rodeo Company, are known for being the owners of the late Bodacious, the only bull inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Also in the Bull Riding Hall of Fame, Bodacious, who died in 2000, was considered to be the most dangerous bull ever, a legend made even more famous when he seriously injured all-time great Tuff Hedeman. The rodeo often features big names among its competitors, Moseley said, national champion quality participants. The list has included local champion J.W Harris, a four-time winner in the bull riding competition at the National Finals Rodeo. And, just like the fans watching, the participants always have a great time, Moseley said. “We always say thank you for taking part in our rodeo, and most of the time they all turn around and say, ‘No, thank you,’” Moseley said. “When you run a first-class event they want to be a part of it.” The rodeo is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It is funded solely by donations, sponsorships and fundraising, such as a skeet shoot that was added this year. Proceeds from the annual rodeo go back to youth in the county, Moseley said, for events such as the Youth Fair each year. “We also have a wonderful fundraising committee that goes out and raises money,” he said, noting that things such as selling box seats also helps raise funds. Moseley said the long-term success of the rodeo can be directly attributed to one major source. “It’s our community. I can’t express enough how great our community is,” Moseley said. “They’re stepping up to help in so many

ways. We have to rely on making money even to keep our lights on, and the community is always there.” This year’s rodeo royalty includes the 2021 Queen Rylah Morgan. Junior Miss is Taylor Simpson, and Princess is Bentley Till. They will represent the Youth Fair, will enter on horseback during the Grand Entry to kick off the rodeo, and will also be at the Market and Trade Days to visit and sign autographs, Moseley said. Citizens are also invited to the annual membership meeting on June 3 at the Home Economics Building, around 5:30 p.m., Moseley added. The event is free to members of the Brown County Fair Association and members of their family. For non-members, memberships can be purchased at the door for $20, he said.

“It’s really a bargain, getting to feed your family for $20,” Moseley said with a smile. “And you’re joining a really good organization.” Moseley said the community is buzzing with excitement now that the rodeo is back. Yes, COVID-19 does still exist, but he stressed the county has very few cases and “There’s a positivity in the air.” “People are ready to get back and enjoy the rodeo. Nine out of every 10 sponsors say they just can’t wait for it to get here,” he said. “It’s going to be fantastic, better than ever.”

There’s no one who fits the description better than Brownwood native Evy Winn. When she was suggested as a BCL magazine article, I wanted to know what she had done to distinguish herself. I soon found out she had served on almost every civic board in Brownwood. But the thing she is most known for are her acts of kindness that have helped make the city the great place it is. Evy grew up three blocks from where she now lives and remembers with wonder the closeness of the community that helped raise her. She and her friends played outside until dark, and if one of them got into trouble, their parents knew it before they got home. Everyone had to behave or face the consequences. Her grandfather started the Waldrop Construction company that her brother, Paul, and his son, Sam, still own and operate. Her grandmother had the kindest heart of anyone she ever knew. She wore a bonnet and worked in her garden, but she couldn’t cook,

so Granddaddy did the cooking. Every Sunday after church the whole family gathered at the Waldrop home and ate Sunday dinner. A common phrase was, “If you don’t recognize what you’re eating, don’t ask.” Grandaddy was partial to things he caught like, catfish, squirrels, and frogs, to name some of the more interesting sources of protein. Her maternal grandfather, Harry Hames, was the pastor of First Baptist Church. He and her grandmother set an example of serving the community with a loving heart. Grandmother Hames was a wonderful artist, and one of Evy’s prize possessions is her grandmother’s depiction from the biblical story of Abraham sending his servant to find a wife for his son Isaac. “Rebecca at the Well.” She and her husband Roland met on a blind date and married fifty-three years ago. Daughter Tressie is a drug counselor. Her missionary son, Rex, has been with CRU, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ,
and has lived in Spain for more than twenty years, and son, Frank, is co-owner of the Car Coral with Evy and Roland. Evy’s eclectic collection of Brownwood memorabilia would fill a small museum. She has a collection of books by local authors, bricks from the Texas Brick Company, with “test bricks” etched into the side of each one, souvenir spoons, Texas Globe Co. paper weights, Centennial wooden nickels, and a delightful little vintage 1946 ice cream table and chairs from Winn Pharmacy.

Evy loves to walk. She doesn’t just walk around the neighborhood, even though she does plenty of that, she walks world-famous trails. Her favorite is Camino de Santiago in Spain. Tradition says that St. James, the brother of Jesus walked from Southern France across northern Spain, preaching the Gospel, and baptizing with a scallop shell. Many use the walk as a spiritual endeavor. Evy loves the beautiful Pyrenees Mountains. One of her favorite hikes begins in Santiago and moves up the western coast to a tiny village, Finnesteria. It means End of the Earth. People come from all over the world to sit on a ledge and watch the sun set. Community service is an important part of Evy’s life. She has been on too many boards to mention all of them, but some of them are 1st Christian Church, and she served on the board and as a mentor in their Latch Key program. The Good Samaritan’s program provides a food pantry, twenty-five cent clothing items and furniture for those going through hard times. If they have no money, the items are free. She’s also served on the board of Meals on Wheels, Keep Brownwood Beautiful, Stars of Texas and the Kiwanis Club. In 2017, she was given a Woman od Distinction Award by the Girl Scouts.

P Perhaps her favorite activity is her involvement with the Brownwood Nursing and Rehab Center. When a cousin had to go to the facility, she was appointed his trustee and went there three or four times a week to see to his needs and wants. Evy not only fell in love with the residents, but she also fell in love with the staff, and wanted to do all she
could to help their endeavor to make it a special place for all the elderly who live there. She doesn’t just spend time with them, she shops for eighteen people every week. In her own words, “You ought to see my Walmart shopping cart.” In her spare time, Evy likes to cook—in big batches. Most days, after a board meeting and before she takes her long walk, she is seen loading her car with food to take to shut ins. It started with banana pudding. But she said she never could leave well enough alone, so it’s evolved into banana, strawberry, blueberry pudding. She progressed to kettles of soup and other mouth-watering morsels for those on her love-list, which could be a large portion of the senior population of Brownwood. Evy also likes to have fun and gamble. Every week she and “the girls” get together for a blood-and-guts game of Mah Jongg. Each hand has a value of a nickel, and the maximum one is allowed to lose is five dollars. The game travels from house to house. That’s probably to go undetected by the local police. It wouldn’t do for women of the community to make the front page of the paper for running an unlawful gambling house. Sharing just a fraction of the things she’s done, there’s no doubt, the world would be a better place if we had more like Evy Winn in our society. If someone was asked to describe her in one sentence, I think they would say, “She has a heart as big as Texas.”

n 2017 Hannah Deen did not want to enter the Brown County Fair Royalty competition. Now, as an outgoing, self-assured thirteenyear-old, she shares her story of self-discovery and she mentors younger girls. “I loved competing, showing animals, and I enjoy designing and modeling clothes, but when I was eleven, I was too shy to be on stage and talk to crowds of people.” The daughter of Cody and Annalyn Deen, Hannah currently attends Brownwood Middle School. “My mom convinced me to enter. I had to keep the Deen family tradition going because my mom was a youth fair queen, and my Mimi was the very first Brown County rodeo queen.”

Annalyn Deen, won the crown for the Brown County Youth Fair Queen in 1997.
Hannah’s mother, Annalyn Deen, won the crown for the Brown County Youth Fair Queen in 1997. She began participating in the youth fair program in the third grade. Annalyn takes pride in being a previous youth fair queen and explained to Hannah how girls benefit from programs like the Junior Miss event. “We moved around when I was younger, so I participated in many county fairs. The Brown County Youth Fair is by far the best. At that time no other fairs offered the opportunity of being a youth fair queen. I watched the competition each year and looked up to the queens. Soon I wanted to represent my school and make my family proud. “Like most young women, I gained confidence in my ability to speak in front of a crowd. I gained poise and learned how to present myself to adults. I became more confident in myself and my ability to achieve any goal I set. The experience of running for the youth fair queen taught me to work for what I wanted to achieve. Hard work pays off.”

Linda Deen, was the first Brown County Rodeo Queen in 1965.
Hannah’s grandmother, Linda Deen, was the first Brown County Rodeo Queen in 1965. Like Hannah Linda had to be talked into competing in the new Rodeo Queen program by dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Albis Sewalt. “I was too much of a tomboy to worry about poise and appearance. However, I loved my horse and knew I could ride fairly well—so I decided to go for it.” Linda explained, “There were twelve others running with me, many of them are still friends to this day. I learned how to be more professional. Back then, we had a tea in the Brown Town Hotel and were interviewed by judges. We had a horsemanship section and had to ride the horses in a pattern. The Queen was announced at the Saturday night rodeo instead of the youth fair. After the crowning, I rode with the Brown County Riding Club a few times. This experience changed me. It helped me to appreciate people. I only wish more girls would become involved in the program because it is fun and good for their self-esteem.”

Having a strong work ethic runs in the Deen family. As a shy girl facing a family tradition, Hannah picked up her own banner of courage and entered the Brown County contest. “My first two years were in the Princess program, however, I never was able to win that crown.” Hannah may have been shy, but her determination was stronger than her shyness. “It was in my third year, when I moved to the Junior Miss category, that I finally won. It may have taken me three years, but I felt proud of what I had done, plus I had more confidence and felt comfortable on the stage. It just felt amazing, like I was dreaming. I learned how to speak in front of crowds, how to present myself on stage, how to feel confident. I had fun and I learned how to be myself. My mom taught me how to be a representative of Brown County and she helped prepare me to speak in front of an audience. My Mimi gave

me support and always cheered me on. My Granna (Martha Beard) helped make sure I was dressed in the best outfit for every occasion. I also looked up to Rylah Morgan, the current Mrs. Brown County Fair Queen. That year, Rylah and I practiced our speeches together, sometimes in her barn and sometimes in my barn.” Annalyn is not only proud of Hannah for her tenacity but praises the Brown County program for giving younger girls more time to gain experience in the process. “I was really excited when the youth fair board decided to add the Princess and Junior Miss contests to the royalty race. It was a way to expand the program and allow girls to learn how to be ambassadors at a younger age. I believe the program will continue to branch out in other ways, so the girls can represent the youth fair and become ambassadors for the ag industry as a whole.” Even before Hannah gained the crown, she encouraged others. She helped mentor one young girl who was also shy and afraid to speak in front of crowds. Hannah’s persistence at running again inspired others to try again. “My mom and Mimi inspired me, and I want to inspire all of the girls in Brown County, or anyone who is shy and needs courage. This experience will give me the confidence to pursue my future goals.” The Deen women continue to work for the things they believe in and strive to preserve Brown County traditions. At thirteen, Hannah looks forward to many more Brown County Youth Fairs and finding her place in life.

IT ALL BEGAN AROUND 1964, ARMED WITH 70-YEAR-OLD RECIPES AND TECHNIQUES. AND NOW, THREE GENERATIONS LATER, THE WITTE FAMILY AND FRIENDS HAVE GATHERED AROUND BARBECUE PITS.

n the beginning it was with wooden smokehouses, then brick and mortar pits, and finally to what they are using and still developing today. “We at Heartland believe the ‘stick burner,’ as we prefer to call it, is the only way to create great and memorable Texas style barbecue,” said Bill Witte, Sr., co-owner of Heartland BBQ in Early. A stick burner smoker is an offset barbecue smoker designed to cook meat using only log splits, or “sticks,” as opposed to charcoal. The Concept of Heartland BBQ - a food truck, but not just any food truck - began about four years ago, Bill said.

Heartland’s inaugural event was the B-B-Q for Hero’s event at Spirit of Texas Winery between Early and Zephyr, benefiting the volunteer fire departments of these cities. They served over 300 people in about three and a half hours, running completely out of everything and having to turn people away - not something they wanted to do, but an extreme compliment to the quality of their food and service. “We will be having a second annual benefit this coming summer,” Bill said. “Since that event and exposure, it has been pretty busy with special event requests along with our regular setups.” Bill said there is no real secret to the success of Heartland, other than offering customers friendly-polite service, along with an exceptional product at a reasonable price. The menu has pretty much stayed basic, brisket (sliced/chopped), jalapeno and regular sausage, smoked turkey breast, all offered as sandwiches or plates with sides of beans and potato salad, homemade desserts, along with onions, pickles and a special bar-
becue sauce. All of the meats are served naked (no sauce). “We don’t try to cover up anything. Steve has developed two variants of barbecue sauce that customers really enjoy, and many want to buy in quantity,” Bill said. “Occasionally we offer ribs, pulled pork, chicken.” They also offer a unique item they call Ranch Hand. It has Fritos as the base, covered with their own beans, chopped brisket or sausage, layered with cheddar cheese and covered with Steve’s barbecue sauce. “It’s very popular once you try,” Bill noted. “Occasionally we will also offer loaded smoke potato, opened with chopped brisket or sausage, butter, cheddar cheese, sour cream and chives. We will also sell our barbecue by the pound as well for customers who want to take home for their own event and sides.” But the most popular item is their Brisket. They cook it the old-fashioned way. Thus, their slogan, “If there ain’t no smoke, it’s a joke.”

“We get more enjoyment out of watching our customers facial expressions as they taste our menu items and sauce,”
Bill added they are always looking for new items to introduce, and they welcome feedback from customers as to their likes and dislikes. They also take special requests from customers, ie., they have smoked whole briskets, ribs and even a whole beef tenderloin. “We get more enjoyment out of watching our customers facial expressions as they taste our menu items and sauce,” Steve said. “A lot of people will hesitate to try something. They will say ‘I don’t like this or that,’ but we encourage them with sample and sauce. They taste, eyes bug out, smile appears on their face and they utter out, ‘That’s really good! Give me a couple pounds or plates.’” Bill also commented that they use their own wood cut off Steve and Denise’s ranch, Rockin 4-W. They are also in plans to harvest their own briskets of grass-fed cattle off the family ranch. He continued to say that they will be working on their own recipe for sausages. At events they also offer Bear Mountain Hot Sauces, which are from a 40-year-old recipe that Bill’s mother-in-law handed down to the family. He said they sell the sauces independently as well in stores and boutiques, in four different flavors - Hot, Hot Hot, Ghost Pepper and Salsa Verde. Bill stressed that barbecue is in the family bloodline. “I remember as a child in southeast Texas growing up, barbecue was a mainstay for weddings, anniversaries, graduations, or any other event you come up with,” he said. “I recall many Sundays after church we would all go home, change out of our Sunday clothes - back then all dressed up for church - head out to one of member’s farm or ranch for a big Sunday barbecue. “This stuck with me, and over the years at barbecues many events and occasions, it really brings back a lot of memories. I have always had it in the back of my head to do something like Heartland, Now, with my son and our wives it has become reality, and we together can start a new chapter of memories of doing what we enjoy.”

Heartland serves events at breweries, wineries, as well as events for the local Early and Brownwood Chambers of Commerce. They recently did an event for T-Mobile for their grand opening of their new store in Brownwood. COVID-19 has been a challenge, Bill admits, but added it also has opened doors of opportunity within the community. For example, he said local breweries and wineries could not open unless they served a certain percentage of food. “This is where we come in, set up outside and meet that requirement, a win-win for both,” he said. Heartland has been blessed with great reviews and followers and Bill said they appreciate all of them. “We do special events, as well as traveling to area towns that will not typically have our menu available. When we do we have great response and are always asked, ‘When will you be back’ or ‘Are you going to open a store?’ “We would certainly like to have a brick-andmortar store in the future. We just want to make sure of timing,” Bill said. “It is something in the back of our minds and we talk about It.”
