Brown County Community Guide 2020

FROM THE EDITOR

Hope

O

ur first edition this year was all about the strength to keep going. We focused on those that had academic excellence and those with entrepreneurial innovation. It’s incredible to me that we had that focus, not having any idea of what was in store for 2020.

This year has been a test of that strength, to say the least. As people, as a community, as business owners, as parents, as individuals navigating through the unknowns and uncertainties of 2020, we have each needed to draw on that strength to persevere more than ever before. Our theme of this edition is hope. The hope of what’s to come. The hope of what is on the horizon. From the downtown area being revitalized to incredible individuals that have pushed through with their eye's laser focused on the future, the community of Brown County has amazed us with their ability to stay focused. The continued effort of this community to focus on the hope of the future is inspiring.

KELSEY WALLEN

We hope that as you read through these pages, that you, too, would be inspired to look to the future, to believe in what is coming. None of us knows what's in store for 2021, but we know that as a community, we will continue to hold onto hope.

Revitalizing

BROWNWOOD Words by Rick Mauch

"I have always wanted to give back to the community in some way. Growing up, I witnessed community leaders, including my dad, strive for a better Brownwood"

M

atthew McCrane has traveled plenty in his football career, enjoying many victories. Now, he's back home with a winning formula to revitalize the downtown area of his beloved Brownwood. "I have always wanted to give back to the community in some way. Growing up, I witnessed community leaders, including my dad, strive for a better Brownwood," Matthew said. "With the Brownwood Reunion Celebration and many other events in the early 2000s, Brownwood was trending in the right direction. There are many people to thank that led us to where we are today. "Over the last few years, the revitalization as some call it, has had a major impact on the local economy. In downtown specifically, we have seen an appreciation for local history." Matthew, a placekicker, attended Brownwood High School and Kansas State University. He kicked the longest field goal in Brownwood Lions history, 52 yards. As a Wildcat at KSU from 2014-17, he converted 133-of-134 extra point attempts and 57-of-66 field goal attempts. He ranks second in Big XII Conference history and seventh in NCAA history for career field goal percentage (86.4). Following college, he entered the professional ranks. He had two stints with the Arizona Cardinals, along with stops with the Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns of the NFL. His most recent team was the New York Guardians of the XFL. However, his contract ended when the league suspended operations in April because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"My wife (Megan) and I lived in Manhattan, Kansas while I traveled to three NFL teams my rookie season. We ultimately decided to make the move to Fort Worth to be closer to her family as I stayed ready to get a call from another organization," he said. "The call came late in the year and I had been drafted to the XFL New York Guardians in November of 2019. We were ready for the adventure and made the road trip to New York state, where we lived until March of 2020 when the XFL got shut down. "We packed up all of our belongings and made the trip back to our Fort Worth apartment. It didn’t take long for us to realize we needed a place we could be outdoors and remain productive, H O MET O W N L I VI NG A T ITS B EST

11

which led us back to the family ranch. "After about four months, we decided to find our 'landing spot.' We looked at quite a few properties in downtown Brownwood, but loved the potential of 323 Brown St, formerly the A-1 Locksmith Shop." Among his work to revitalize downtown was the restoration of the Green Room, the starting point. "I have always been interested in the architectural arcade detail (or arches) of our block on Brown Street. We believed it was the most historically significant building available at that time," he said. "Brown Street has a rich past in local retail, but unfortunately all have left that section of downtown." "We just completed the renovation. We kept the original pressed tin ceiling, Florentine glass windows, and recreated a 1918 advertisement on the back alley wall. Currently its use is residential." The McCranes' most recent project is the Shaw’s Laundry building, now Shaw’s Marketplace. They just announced a Spring 2021 opening. "Shaw’s Marketplace is a family endeavor that we are excited to take on together. Each one of us has a specific role in our business plan. With an opening date in Spring 2021, we are all hard at work for the launch," he said. "My ultimate goal is to see Hotel Brownwood restored. That will complete the revitalization for me." Both sides of the McCrane family have connections to the downtown area of Brownwood, Matthew said. Heart of Texas Advertising Speciality was located on Center Avenue for 20-plus years. Notably, Harper Hotel and Grocery (1904-1942) was located at 108 S. Broadway. Matthew noted that, coincidentally, a 1922 newspaper places a Shaw’s Laundry advertisement next to the Harper Grocery advertisement. "My mom’s side, the Harper family is a pioneer family of early Brownwood, settling in the late

12

1800s. With deep history to Brownwood, we couldn’t be more excited about the most recent project," he said. Matthew said his experience as a professional athlete, the determination and hard work that goes with that, is an asset when it comes to the downtown project. "Throughout my professional career, I have been released five times. I say this as an example of how important it is to keep your mind positive and focused while working towards your goal," he said. "From making a roster to completing a remodel, I have lived by 'proper planning and preparation prevents poor performance.'" He's also not given up on continuing his pro football career, having spent the past couple

months in Cleveland as part of the Browns' practice squad - even as he continues the restoration work in his hometown. "Before signing with the Browns, I was hard pressed on a few projects downtown. With the help of family, I am working remotely and advising as needed. We are eager to return back to Brownwood in the offseason to complete this project," he said. "My goal is to continue the movement for a better Brownwood. As we receive advice from current business owners, we can understand the dynamic of our local economy and its needs. We have enjoyed helping others nearby with their renovations and hope for continued success in our historic downtown."

Our reigning Junior Miss Hannah Deen is the daughter of Cody and Annalyn Deen. She is a 7th grader in Brownwood. Her motto is "never hope for it more than you work for it because hard work pays off." For the 2021 youth fair, she will be showing market and breeding sheep and goats. She will be busy with her home ec projects creating clothing, crafts, food, and canning. Our reigning Princess Hutsyn Hohertz is the daughter of Harlan and Lori Hohertz. She is a sixth-grader at Early. Hutsyn lives by her Bebe’s motto, “Carpe Diem” and she strives to instill her seize the day attitude into others through her actions. She looks forward to showing her sheep and pigs, mentoring the princess contestants, as well as creating sewing projects for the 2021 youth fair.

16

Hutsyn Hohertz - Princess My passion for the youth fair began by watching my older sister, who is my role model, show sheep. The BCFA has impacted me because all of the committee members working to help me to feel more confident. I would encourage youth to show and create projects for the fair because showing helps you with your future. My family works together in the barn, and by working together we have better sheep. My favorite show ring moment was winning Reserve Grand Supreme Dorper at the State Fair, it showed me I have made progress since I first started. "Put the time in with your animals every day, and always be confident on how your animal works." Hannah Deen - Junior Miss Favorite Show ring moment: When my little brother won Grand, and I won Reserve with my Southdown. Showmanship advice: No matter who you are up against, no matter how big or small you are, and no matter how experienced you are, never give up, no matter what.

Our reigning queen, Miss Emma Connelly, is the daughter of Jennifer Connelly-Behringer and the late Clint Connelly of Early. She is a Senior at Early High School where she has participated in volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, track, cross country, softball, the National Junior Honor Society, judging teams, and she is a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In high school, she has pursued her passion for rodeo by participating in barrel racing. Emma has been an active participant in the Brown County Youth Fair and this year she will be showing pigs and goats. Showing has taught her many life lessons like setting goals for things that make her better, working hard, and always giving above and beyond what is asked of her. As a Brown County Fair Association Queen candidate, Emma enjoyed learning how to help people who are in need. She was able to encourage and be a role model for younger kids. When Emma was asked about her experience running to become the queen she said it was extremely fun, she enjoyed the environment and being around the other girls. Emma earned $7,000 in scholarships from the queen's race which she will use to attend firefighting school. BrownCountyFairAndRodeo.com

Family time: Stock shows have brought my family closer because we have to work together. You can’t show alone. Lessons from the youth fair: Confidence and Respect. "Never look down on someone unless you are helping them up"

his coming track season for the Baylor Bears, a small town girl has big plans to avoid the Monday blues that accompanied a sudden end to the 2020 campaign, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tuesdi Tidwell, from Blanket, has her sights set on winning a NCAA pole vaulting championship in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The senior might have been the reigning title holder this season were it not for the NCAA calling off the finals of the

indoor season and the entire outdoor season once COVID-19 turned into a pandemic. Tuesdi was ranked fourth in the nation with her Baylor record indoor vault of 14 feet, 9 inches as she prepared for the national championship meet. In fact, she and her teammates were in New Mexico, all set to compete, when a day later they found themselves sent back home. "The sudden end to the season has been something we have all had to learn to deal with and use for the future. This sudden end

has given me a chance to realize every moment that I get to prepare is important, and every meet coming up this season needs to be taken as if it was my last for the year," Tuesdi said. "I want to put it all on the track and be thankful for every opportunity I get considering I now know what it feels like not to have that." Tuesdi has five of the top 10 vaults in Baylor history, yet one thing that has eluded her has been a national championship. As a senior this would normally be her last opportunity, but the NCAA has granted extra eligibility for those who want to take it - and indeed she does.

22

BRO WN CO U NTY LI V I N G

"It is almost like I have two senior years now. I still have this year and the following year for full eligibility. I am determined to take advantage of this opportunity and not let this extra year go to waste," she said. "My goal this season is to really dial in my form to get as high of a mark as I can. Last year, I had made a lot of bars without using my best form or worrying about poles. This year I have a new mindset, and I am focusing on cues and being flexible with whatever pole is working for me that day. "This will be the only way for me to be a competitor for the national championship, and I am willing to do whatever it takes to get me to that point."

Tuesdi began pole vaulting in the seventh grade after being talked into trying it by her mom. Neither had any prior knowledge of the sport, but her mom thought it would be something fun to try, and it turned out that Tuesdi felt the same way. After all, being upside down was nothing new to Tuesdi, a power tumbler and cheerleader. "She thought another sport with throwing my body around would be a perfect match," Tuesdi said with a laugh. Her parents drove her to Hico three days each week to practice with her pole vault club, in addition to her high school practices. She qualified for state every year she

was in high school, winning a silver medal as the state runner-up her sophomore and senior years. At Baylor she also qualified for the cheerleading squad, but ultimately had to make a choice between it or track. "My heart was so much farther into pole vaulting, and it was such an easy choice for me. I definitely miss cheer, especially when watching the BU cheerleaders that I made the team with, but I would choose track every time," she said. Though she chose track, that didn't guarantee a spot on the team roster. She had to work harder than she ever had to earn that place, and now she's a part of school history.

"I spent my entire freshman year trying to prove my worth at Baylor. It was stressful some days, but I had people around me that never let me doubt my worth on the team," she recalled. "I looked around and saw so many talented girls around me, and I did everything I could to be on their level. I have always done what my coach asks of me and more on top of it. "The Baylor pole vault coach (Brandon Richards) is one of the greatest people I have ever met. He really cares about his athletes on and off the track. I am a very stressful person, but he reassures me almost daily that I don’t need to stress. He believed in me before I believed in myself. "Coming into college I thought 13-6 would be a good overall goal for me. Now I have opened up at a height higher than that, and I never would have been able to mentally if it wasn’t for him." Tuesdi comes from an athletic family. Both of her parents ran track in high school, but neither knew anything about pole vaulting. Still, they worked with her, also learning the technique and the way the poles worked to help her reach her goal. "I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today without their support in helping me to learn and love this sport," she said. Tuesdi also qualified for national as a sophomore at Baylor. She admits she was frightened upon arrival. "I was honestly scared looking at all the talent I had to compete with," she said, adding, "Having the experience competing with them has given me confidence in realizing

that I was one of the talents in the competition and had just as much right of being there as they did." Tuesdi is majoring in communication, science, and disorders with concentration of speech pathology. "This major has such a wide range of people I can work with and help," she said. She is also considering competing professionally and hopefully representing the United States in the Olympics. "I am very open to competing professionally in pole vaulting for a few years. I would have never imagined that would even be close to an option for me, but I am now getting so close to that becoming a reality, and it basically depends on how the next few years go," she said. "I definitely plan on making the Olympic Trials, but I have a long road ahead if I want to compete for the Olympics since the USA is filled with so many amazing women pole vaulters." And when she looks back at being from the small town of Blanket, she still gets emotional. No matter how big her success becomes, she will always be a small town girl. "There are so many people in that town and surrounding towns that have helped me in my athletic journey. I have had coaches from Blanket, Early, Brownwood, and Hico that have welcomed me with open arms to anything I needed, and that’s something you don’t get everywhere," she said tearfully. "I am one of the hardest people on myself, and I have to stop and think sometimes of the big picture and how blessed I am to be given the situation that I was placed in."

HEROES IN

The first of three articles to highlight Brown County law enforcement officers who put themselves between you and danger. Every Brown County officer is willing to risk their life for a total stranger.

The sheriffs and deputy sheriffs, police department, DPS, Texas Rangers, river authorities, lake patrol, constables, and deputy constables— all peace officers are licensed by the state of Texas and all are given certain powers throughout the state. They all share one important attribute. They proactively protect the people they serve in an ever-changing world, while always remaining faithful to the U.S. and State of Texas Constitutions. The Brown County Sheriff's Office employs thirty-one licensed peace officers. Chief Deputy James Stroope has served in law enforcement for seventeen years. “I started my career at the Comanche Police Department before coming back home to Brownwood in 2006. We have a great group of officers serving the citizens of this county. There have

32

BRO WN CO U NTY LI V I N G

been many great memories. One that comes to mind was when we used cell phone technology and training, provided by this office, to obtain a conviction on a murder case that may not have been solved otherwise. “The COVID shutdown has made it difficult to be proactive and interactive, leaving a void. Good interactions between the majority of citizens and law enforcement is critical to avoid a divided community.” Chief Deputy Stroope shared his thoughts on the law enforcement officer’s family. “Officers put their lives aside while performing their duties, oftentimes neglecting their own families to ensure the safety of strangers. Our families are there for us when we do get down time and we welcome each moment we can spend with them...never knowing if it will be the last. It takes a special person to be in law enforcement, but even more so to be the spouse of an officer. “We are a servant organization and want everyone to know that we are approachable, from the Sheriff down to the midnight patrol. We welcome the citizens to visit with us and we strive to maintain transparency. We are extremely lucky to have such a supportive community, especially in this day and time.” The Brownwood Police Department strives to partner with the citizens of Brownwood to provide a safe environment and enhance their quality of life through professional police practices. Thirty-nine sworn officers, sixteen dispatchers, two animal control officers, one city marshal, and other supporting civilian staff serve under the leadership of Chief Ed Kading in the Brownwood Police Department. Chief Kading has spent twenty-seven years in law enforcement. “Having done this job for so long, knowing the commitment I’ve had to public service, I’m proud, impressed and in awe of the dedication these officers have for each other, this community, and the courage and professionalism they exhibit on a

H O MET O W N L I V I NG A T I TS B EST

daily basis. I take such enjoyment and pride in seeing my people succeed and working together to solve problems in our community. The law and police procedures are complex things and they do it very well.” Seeing employees go through tough times, tragedy and pain is probably the most difficult thing for Chief Kading. “I want people to know that every officer in this department is committed to keeping you safe and is willing to risk their life for a total stranger.” Each family in law enforcement deals with a great deal of stress, handling a hectic schedule of shift work. “They strive to be supportive as officers deal with the things they witness in this profession.” Chief Kading added. “But more than anything, our families come together for other families in times of need or celebration. Times are tough in this country for everyone. As you know, law enforcement is under attack literally and figuratively. I want people to know that community support is appreciated more than you will ever know. Police officers don’t pursue or enjoy the spotlight, but a simple “thank you for your service” goes a long way to improve morale.” Early Police Department’s Chief of Police David Mercer marks his thirty-fifth year in Early Police Department in February, 2021, the last thirteen years as Chief. “We always strive to hire the best officers. The group we have now is a great bunch of men and women who are dedicated to serving their community and keeping them safe. They all believe strongly in being fair, honest and treating everyone with the greatest amount of respect possible. There have been so many successful moments over the years, from officers finding missing children or missing elderly people, to saving a baby who wasn’t breathing, to officers finding a house fire during

34

BRO WN CO U NTY LI V I N G

the night while people inside were sleeping and then getting the families out before tragedy struck.” Chief Mercer talked of the sad situations law enforcement deals with, including child victims of physical and sexual abuse, sexual assaults, deaths, and much more. “The loss of some of our friends and citizens has always been difficult. Plus, having to deal with the loss of our brothers and sisters in blue is especially hard. All the officers are very family oriented, almost all have children and all spend time with family and school activities. I love it when the officers bring the kids and families by the office to visit. The quality of the families says a lot about the officer themselves.”

H O MET O W N L I V I NG A T I TS B EST

35

The Early Police Department spends time at school activities to support and meet the kids. Chief Mercer continued, “With all the bad press going on today, we want the kids to understand that police officers are not always there to arrest someone and we truly are there to help. We have the DREAM (Drugs, Resistance, Education and Mentoring) program, which is similar to the old DARE program, but with the DREAM program we can make it fit our needs in our community. Sergeant Brandon McMillian has been our DREAM teacher in the past. Officer Tasha Tobias is currently stepping into that role. We teach the class to the 3rd graders for 12 weeks in the first semester of each year. We end the 12-week class with a pizza party and some type of activity like skating, bowling or extreme jump. We believe this program is one of the best programs we have ever had to connect officers with the kids. The next time you see one of these law enforcement officers, tell them thank you and pray for the heroes who put themselves between you and danger.

"My inspiration for fighting back was my family, friends, and community," Dilan said. "My mom and dad (Jason and Stephanie Johnston) were the ones who took care of me in the hospital even though I was a little grouchy towards them. Their support made me say to myself, 'I will overcome this and show them that their son is strong and that I appreciate their support.'" Dilan admits that the life-changing situation was overwhelming. At first he wondered if he would be able to walk across the stage to accept his diploma at his May High School graduation ceremonies. Would he ever be able to play sports again. Then, he took a deep breath, looked at the challenge before him, and pushed himself to do what he knew he must in order to continue enjoying the life he was used to.

"I realized I can do anything I use to do. I just had to work for it," he said. "The reason I have such a positive outlook now if because of the community and my family. They were there for me so much that there is no way to have a negative outlook." At May High School, Dilan competed in football, basketball and baseball, enjoying success in each. He had a great relationship with his coaches, and said if he had to choose a favorite sport, he simply could not. And he was good, which only adds to the great memories of his days playing for the Tigers. "My favorite memory in football is when we were playing Zephyr, and I juked the great athlete Mason Rogers out," he recalled. "Baseball was my sport though. I was a DH (designated hitter) my sophomore year and was really good at it. That

was my favorite season because I got to play with my big brother Preston Johnston." Dilan said participating in the SWAGA Tournament and doing the Life Hunt played a big role in his life. He said they helped give him a better attitude towards life and what happened to him. "Seeing all the people like me at the SWAGA showed me that I wasn’t the only one. The Buckmasters Foundation showed me no matter what happened to you, you can do anything that you put your mind to. These associations made my life a whole lot better.

"The SWAGA Tournament gave me the chance to show the community how excited I was to give back to them and show no matter what, nothing is impossible. I wanted everyone to see how far along I’ve come." Dilan said he thought hunting, one of his favorite activities, was a thing of the past following the amputation. Then, one day he was on Facebook and Buckmasters tagged him in a post. "I teared up reading it. The Buckmasters Foundation is great and helps a lot of people in need, and shows them no matter what nothing

is impossible, even hunting," he said. "It was also amazing to be able to meet the Beal family. They were such great people. The owner of Circle Bar B, Steve Beal, walked up to me when I arrived and said 'I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're hunting with me. The bad news is you're hunting with me.' "I was like, 'How is that bad news?' It meant a lot to me to be able to hunt with the owner. Do not ever call Steve and me the C team, like his son did, because Steve goes for the win." "In the Buckmasters event I shot the biggest deer I will ever shoot in my lifetime. I wasn’t expecting to get one that big. Getting the one I got made my whole life." And the entire nation had a chance to see it. "It was amazing to be on national TV. I like to think of myself as famous now," Dilan said with a chuckle. "It just meant a lot to know that everyone could see that smile on my face and see that nothing is impossible." Along with his love of hunting, Dilan loves golf for a special reason. "Those are my two favorite things to do. I got into golfing because of my dad. I love it because it’s something I get to do with my dad and I know he enjoys it," he said. Dilan is attending Tarleton State University and majoring in physical therapy and minoring in coaching. As of the moment, he is not competing in any sports connected to the school. "I chose these two (subjects) because I want to be able to help people and have a positive impact on their life like my coaches and physical therapists had on mine," he said. "I would like to add that would not be here today without the grace of God and him watching over me. Also, I would like to add that the people that really impacted my life other than my mom and dad, were my best friend Ethan Self, my cousin Seth (Johnston) and my other best friend Roberta (Robinette). They (Seth and Roberta) are the ones who taught me how to walk. "I was at school one day and Seth and Roberta

were walking with me, and Roberta took my crutches and said, 'Walk this far and I’ll give you your crutches back.' As I would get closer she would back up, and did this the whole way to one class." She and Seth were close enough to make sure he didn't fall, he said. But that help made a great impact on his life. "Was I mad at first that they took my crutches? A little bit, but I know they were just trying to help me. They will never know the true amount of how much I love them," he said. Dilan realizes his fighting back is also an inspiration to others, and he likes knowing that. "Many people have told that I am a inspiration to them, which makes my day," he said. "The wreck changed my outlook to don’t take your life for granted, and it made me want to be able to inspire and help others."

The Early Spirit of Texas Winery Come Relax & UnWINEd Words by Peggy Freeman

N

estled in the hills near beautiful Lake Brownwood, the Spirit of Texas Winery cajoles visitors to come and enjoy. Sit under the stars by a roaring fire and sip award-winning wine with someone you love or invite your family and friends to celebrate special events or holiday gatherings. Sip, sing and celebrate the spirit of life. Moira and Brian McCue host their winery with a laid back, relaxed vision. Both grew up in the Houston area and married right after college. Within that first year of marriage, Moira started teaching and gave birth to their first son, Ben. About four years later a second son, Conrad, came along. Moira taught for over thirty years in several different districts throughout the state of Texas. Brian’s work

in the credit union industry led the couple from Houston to Lubbock and then to Round Rock. “After working for more than thirty years apart, we decided to work together. In 2016, Moira retired from teaching and I left the credit union industry.” Moira added, “We decided to pursue a business in something we both loved wine.” “By chance, I noticed that there was a grape grower’s field day in Fredericksburg, Texas,” Brian added. “While attending it, I learned that Texas Tech has an on-campus wine-making certification program. I attended my first class that May and the next class in June. Since Moira was off for the summer, we visited about thirty wineries that week and connected with people in the industry. The Texas wine industry is very supportive. Everyone wants to see Texas wine

get the recognition it deserves.” Moira and Brian looked all over the state for a location to purchase an existing winery. “When we saw the property in Early, we knew we had found our place,” Moira said. “It’s right on the highway and the only winery in Brown County.” “We closed on the property in July of 2016 and we opened on April 6th, 2017. After clearing four hundred mesquite trees off the property, we worked on converting the existing pole barn into a beautiful tasting room using 100% reclaimed/repurposed materials that were on the property. There is a booth made from a ‘58 Ford truck bed and tables made from old barn wood. We wanted a rustic, friendly

place where everyone feels welcome,” says Moira. The outside seating for over one hundred guests under the large covered patio and a new 1,000 sq ft steel pergola adds to the charm of the winery. Brian finds the winemaking process most rewarding. “The blend of science and craftsmanship. The amount of chemistry involved is almost mind boggling and the amount of time it takes to master the craft is incredible. When you’re making hundreds of gallons of wine, it takes years of experience to produce a consistently high-quality product. We’re blessed to have that for our wines.” Moira shared the different events people can expect at the winery. “Surprisingly enough, our

most popular events are baby showers. We also do corporate gatherings and great parties to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries.” “Spirit of Texas wines are made 100% from Texas grapes.” Brian explained, “We felt that was important since Texas is in our name. The wines we bottled this year all have vineyard designations on the labels. We’re happy to promote the Texas vineyards that grow our Texas grapes.” In 2019 Spirit of Texas wines were selected as a Go-Texan-Blue-Ribbon-Wine-Selection, one of twelve wines featured at the Texas State Fair. It also won a Gold Medal & Best in Category at the 2019 Lone Star International Wine Competition and the 2020 Texas International Wine Competition. When Brian talks wine, it’s difficult not to taste them all. Evidently, a lot of people enjoy Spirit of Texas wines. They just released the third bottling of the crowd favorite Blush and the new 100% Picpoul Blanc (tropical bouquet but a wonderfully clean finish). “Upcoming releases include a second bottling of the Welcome White, a blend of Malvasia & Viognier. This dry white has a lovely floral bouquet and a finish that leaves you wanting more.” Brian said. “We’re excited to release Aged to Reflection. Comprised of Montepulciano, Aglianico, Tempranillo, Dolcetto, and a few others, this dry red blend will surprise you with its complexity. We had a trial run of Peached Up last December and have been getting requests for more ever since. It’s a sweet white with natural peach flavorings.” “We also have a 100% Texas Roussanne,” Moira added. “It’s a dry white that we plan on releasing in the fall. We’re bottling three more dry reds this month.

We’re excited about our 100% Texas Sangiovese. We hope to release it in December. The others are Aged to Reflection and a 100% Texas Aglianico that will be released in 2021.” The secret is out all over the country. Tammy Travis of Austin, Texas, commented on her great evening at Spirit of Texas Winery. “Awesome Fun!! The owners are extremely friendly and remember your name after the first introduction!” The Haggards of Manchester, Tennessee, added, “It was such a surprise to find this winery on my way to see my sister in San Angelo! Wonderful hospitality! I can’t wait to drink my Rip Roarin’ Red!” The Spirit of Texas Winery is a member of the Cross Timbers Wine Trail, currently with over thirty wineries, stretching from Early to north of Saint Jo, Texas. Cross Timbers Wine Trail offers entertaining wine events. Brian and Moira plan to be active in promoting Texas wines. The McCues’ love goes beyond wines. They also love to support local non-profits. They work closely with Good Samaritan Ministries (GSM), donating over six-hundred cans of tuna to the Brownwood non-profit and GSM’s food pantry in 2020. They also support The Ark shelter, CASA in the Heart of Texas, local volunteer fire departments, and more. “We truly hope our guests enjoy the winery as much as we do,” Moira said. “We invite everyone out to our tasting room located at 6037 County Road 291 in Early. njoy a crisp December night under a star-studded sky, twinkling Christmas lights and neighbors greeting neighbors. Add an abundance of funfilled activities, Christmas carols, hot chocolate, yummy treats, and that very special someone. Stir in families bustling from shop to shop, searching for the perfect gifts and anticipating a lighted parade. Christmas Under the Stars Festival in Riverside Park ensures plenty of space to spread out. since 2009. Executive Director Sunni Modawell recalls that history. “In 2009 the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce staff, ambassadors, members, volunteers, and city employees worked diligently to create a festival that would grow. Eleven years later that creative focus continues with non-profit organizations preparing to entertain children of all ages with activities, crafts, treats, and more. Brownwood’s quaint downtown opens the Christmas season on the first Thursday night of December with over one hundred floats during the annual lighted Christmas Under the Stars parade. In the past, thousands of folks lined the streets to watch the illuminated creations

come to life as it would slowly wind from one side of downtown to the other. “This annual lighted parade has been taking place for decades and this year’s parade performs a switch that can only happen because of the amazing creativity of event planners. With a focus on preventing large crowds, 2020’s Christmas parade may be the best ever, as the floats and all other parade entries line the streets, remaining stationary, and the spectators drive-through.” Families will cruise down streets lined with vintage cars, old tractors, uniquely decorated trailers, music, and entertainment, all bringing joy to brighteyed boys and girls both young and old. The suspense and anticipation will build as parade watchers pass each float with hopeful anticipation. Near the end of the parade route, what to their wondering eyes shall appear but a sleigh carrying the one and only jolly Saint Nick. Families will want to slow down when they reach the Santa Stop and you might drop your letter off to make sure he gets it in time. Get your place on the route early. Past Christmas Under the Stars Festivals have featured holiday games, crafts, food, and attractions for all ages. Key attractions have included Big Wheel Races, Treats for Santa Contest and more. Big Wheel Races have consistently ranked high on the Christmas Under the Stars list, where kids and adults have enjoyed races on one of the greatest, all-time Christmas gifts. Big Wheel Races are held during both nights of the festival and are sponsored by Matthew Williams/State Farm Insurance, Sonic Drive-in, and Smile Doctors Braces. “Even with the uncertainty of 2020, many Brown County non-profit organizations have prepared to entertain children of all ages with activities, crafts and treats over the two-day events,” Sunni explained.

58

“Activities in our history have passed down countless memories. The ice skating rink was a hit in 2013, so much so that it was brought back for three more years. The adult-sized Big Wheels made its debut in 2014 along with the Christmas Scavenger Hunt, Photo Contest, Christmas Tree Auction, Choir Performances, Just Dance Competition, Frosty’s Village Building Contest, Treats for Santa Bake-Off, Live Entertainment, and Elfie Selfies. “Vendors have done a variety of activities with the kids over the years,” Sunni added. “The Chamber continues to surprise the community with an
