Wow, its unbeleivable, 2017 has come to an end as we are in the last month of the year. How has your year being, hope it was soft on you. ฀f there is anything that is on my mind right now, it is Gratitude to God for life, friends and family. When I was younger it was only normal to see the end of the year and get spoilt with gifts, but with age and maturity you just realize its not automatic and alot can happen in a year including the good, the bad and the ugly. Regardless of the ups and downs, one thing remains, the blessing of being alive here and now. I want to personally thank you for reading ENVOGUE magazine, what started as a burning passion has turned into reality. We are just 4months old so we have a long way to go. We hope for a better 2018 and we appreciate your support and feedback. As the New year approaches we will be persistent and never give up, that is the Advice I want to leave with you. Things may not have been the best in 2017 but you are a better person for sure, so continue on that part, be persistent and never give up on your dreams, because one day you will be celebrated. EBUKA OBI UCHENDU Ebuka Obi-Uchendu is every designer’s dream model; he’s got the height, the body and the carriage. Every piece of clothing appears to look good on him, hence his inclination for exploring many paths in the world of fashion. The famous media personality hit the limelight after participating in the 2008 edition of Big Brother Nigeria.

Although he finished eighth place in the competition, he’s among the most established of his fellow contestants, having built a flourishing career in the media world. Over the past nine years, Obi-Uchendu has made a name for himself as a thoroughbred fashionista, yet he fits no box and as such he swings from style to style. His style has been androgynous, traditional, casual, hip, dapper and sartorial. Although he wears casual and formal outfits very well, his traditional look 11

Tassels started trending in 2016 and was everyone’s personal favourite, and even more so in their jewelry or earring form. The year saw an insurge of mixes of simpler hair do’s with lavish makeup routines and exaggerated jewelry. And the tassels /fringe earrings were perhaps the best of them. With a variety of colours and designs we can’t say we are bored with them just yet, the right fringe earrings have that popping power to transform a face from ‘oh cute’ to ‘damn gurl’! Tassels go well with up-swept hairstyles or with a hairdo that’s down. The tassels gives a very chic look and I hope it sticks for a while. The Instagram fash pack are obsessed with tassel earrings, and so are we. Statement accessories really do elevate a look, and a pair of big tassel earrings can give your plain boring outfit the oomph. At the just concluded Lagos Fashion and design week alot of designers included the tassels earings in there final look for the runway and this gets us thinking this trend has come to stay. MAKE YOUR OWN TASSELS EARRINGS Hanging from a belt, off a bag or from the ears . . . tassels are high up in our favorite jubuliant accessories category, alongside the ever-so exuberant pom pom. And the best part about these simple yet elegant tassel earrings is that they are completely customizable! You can work with any colour of your choice

You’ll need: 25 meters (79 feet) of bunka cord 2 corrugated brass beads 5/8 2 corrugated brass caps 1/2 2 eyepins 2 earwires E6000 pliers wire clippers scissors Japanese bunka cord is a very fine, high quality knitted rayon square cord that is perfect for making tassels. It usually comes in 6 meter skins. Start by unraveling the skeins of cord. Cut 2 3 pieces and set them aside. Then cut the rest into multiple 8-10 pieces. (For this tutorial, I used shades of peach and orange but of course, you can use just one color.) Separate the strands into two groups, approximately 20 strands each. 3. Lay the strands flat and pull them up from the middle. Take one of the 3 pieces and slip it under the middle of the bunch. Tie into a double knot and trim away any excess.

Thread the eyepin through the bottom of the bead cap. Insert a small amount of E6000 into the bead cap.

Take the bunch of cord and stuff tied off middle section all the way into the bead cap. Hold in place for several seconds. Thread the corrugated bead on to of the bead cap. Take the pliers and bend the eyepin 90 degrees to the left. Then wrap the eyepin clockwise around the right side of the pliers.

Bring the eyepin all the way around. While gripping the loop with the pliers, take the excess eyepin and start wrapping around the base of the loop. After winding it around twice, trim away any excess wire. Thread the loop through the earwire and trim the tassel to a desired length.

HOW TO CREAT RED THE PERFECT RED LIPS There is something undeniably glamorous and timeless about a red lip. Its time to pay homage to this classic look. It can seem like such an effortless look, but creating the perfect red lip truly isn’t something you rush through with a quick swipe of lipstick. Rather, when your lips are going to be the center of attention, give them the treatment they deserve — pick the right shade, line lips in an upward motion, use the right lip brush and follow the trick makeup artists use to really make the color pop. With the most wonderful time of the year now upon us, the question is, how do you pull off a festive red lip without making constant trips to the bathroom to check for smearing and feathering? the secret to perfecting the look lies in the application. Here are her expert tips for mastering the must-have red lip of the season! Prep Work – The base to any perfect holiday red lip look are healthy lips, chapped lips and red lipstick (especially of the matte variety) are beauty arch nemesis. Start by doing the basics the day or night before: drink plenty of water, apply lip balm, and use an overnight lip treatment. Start applying liner by mapping out the shape of your lips. Using short dashed lines draw an X on the cupids bow, and on the corners of your mouth, and a a straight line in the middle of your lower lip. Finish off the outline by connecting the lines together. Next, gently fill in the entirety of your lip with the liner. Gently blend with your finger or a Q-tip if needed.

Making It Last – To help your lip color last longer, First off blot the lip color with a piece of tissue by pressing your lips up against the tissue, then pressing the tissue between your lips as if you were biting it. Apply another layer of lipstick and repeat. Finally, to keep lipstick from getting all over your lips, 18

HOW TO SURVIVE IN CROWDED POLLUTED CITIES.

ou may never understand what it feels like to live in highly populated city unless you live in one. Personally I live in a quite state, low population, clean air, trees, nature and serenity. I have never really lived in a highly populated place until I had the experience. Had to leave my quite state to another state for an educational program, that was when I understood that there is a different kind of life than the one I have known. On entering the city, I couldn’t help but notice the crowded places from the park, to the streets, the market and the seaming chaos that smells in the air. People move briskly in the streets, there is no time unlike where I was coming from people aren’t that fast paced.

I adjusted my bag and moved briskly too, trying my best to adjust to my new environment. I met a real estate agent and I needed to rent a room for one year which is the duration of the period of my program. My house hunt lead me to certain areas of the city and the pollution is evident. From the streets to the gutters, there is this stench in the air. I finally got a house that suited by budget but still okay. During my stay in that particular neighborhood the dust that settled on my windows where dark in color instead of brown and at certain times there is just this stench in the air that comes around once in a while 21


It was then I appreciated what clean air was, at times like this you just know that fresh clean air is a blessing. At the end of the day, I personally did not enjoy my stay in this populated city and I was always sick and looked forward to leaving the city at any slightest chance I get. One thing that I wondered was if every one else feels like me or am I just feeling very unease with the chaos around alone. It seems the indigenes have adapted to the environment and they don’t seem to care. But personally it would be impossible for me to live permanently in a highly populated city but if you find yourself in such a city, here are tips to help you get along

Considering the impact that our surrounding atmosphere has on our overall health, it is essential that awareness is raised about ways to reduce the associated health hazards. People need to be made aware of how both short term and long term exposure to pollution is equally harmful. Dr Bornali Datta, department of respiratory and sleep medicine at Medanta, Gurgaon suggests ways: 1. Exercise and time- Right Exercising keeps the body more resilient against the toxins in the environment. However, early mornings and late evenings are particularly polluted and running outdoors could cause more harm than good to the body. It is best to exercise when the sun is out. 2. Air Purifiers The most dangerous contaminants in polluted air are pm10 and pm2.5 particulate matter. Most of the air purifiers are unable to filter particles of these sizes. A good way to choose an effective air purifier would be to buy one that has HEPA filters. These have been scientifically studied to provide enhanced protection against particulate matter. 3. Masks Most masks in the market are grossly ineffective at filtering out air. Surgical masks and handkerchiefs are particularly ineffective. Use of an n95 respirator would provide some of the best protection among masks in the market. However, reducing exposure to contaminated air is the best way to avoid the pollution. 4. Minimising exposure Keep the windows of vehicles shut when stuck in traffic and stay indoors, for as long as possible.

#FITFAM EASY STEPS TO BURN ARM FAT What causes arm fat? Fat in arm is common among men or women above 30; this is due to decreased metabolic rate caused by age induced hormonal changes. Younger people can have fat in their arms due to lower metabolic rates caused by inactivity. The arm is made up of two major muscles; biceps and triceps. To achieve your goal, you can use the suggested programs below

Do aerobics that target your arms, I recommend boxing as a solution for both males and females. In boxing there are movements that aim to work on the Biceps or the Triceps. • Work On Your Biceps, The following are bicep programs that can help you tone your muscles 1.) Bicep Curls bicep curls Bicep curls can be done with a dumbbell or barbell. Females should use 3kg dumbbells while males can go as high as 10kg. For dumbbells, females should use 2.5kg weights with a 10kg bar to give a combined 15kg while males can go as high 30kg combined. You should do both dumbbell and barbell curls, 5 sets of 10 reps is appropriate. To do bicep curls right; ensure your upper arm is in a static position and does not move with the lower arm.

2.) Hammer Curls Hammer curls can only be done with dumbbells. The difference between the hammer curl and the usual bicep curl is illustrated with the image here. You will observe that the weights have been carried differently. Remember, your upper arm should not move with your lower arm. The weights and sets are same with bicep curls.

3.) Preacher Curls preacher curl Preacher curls are good for beginners because the preacher bench keeps the upper arm in a static position while the program is done. If you are unable to do 1 and 2 correctly, try doing a preacher curl with a dumbbell or barbell using same weight recommendations in 1 above.

Work on your triceps

1.) Triceps Kickbacks tricep kickbacks Triceps kickbacks are done using dumbbells; you can use a bench or bend on a straightened back as illustrated. You should use same weight and set recommendations mentioned in 1 above.

2.) Dips tricep dips Dips can be done using two parallel bars or a chair. Dips use your body weight and motion to target the triceps. You should do 5 sets of 10 reps.

3.) Overhead Triceps Press overhead tricep press seated overhead triceps press over head triceps press with barbell Overhead triceps press can be done using barbells or dumbbells. They can also be done standing or seated. It is more effective if you do them while seating. Use the usual weight and set recommendations suggested in this article.

4.) Skull Crusher (Triceps Extension) This could be the most effective program for triceps out there which can be done with a barbell or dumbbell. Always remember that your upper arm must remain in a static position. Use same weights and sets as above.

REFLECTING ON 2017 “2017 has been a year of many occurances, I would say it’s a year of the good, the bad and the ugly. In conclusion it has been an amazing year. The fact that we went through the year and experienced all that we experienced and we are alive to tell the story is an amazing thing, and as the new year approaches we have the oppotunity to continue with the lessons we have already learnt and by the Grace of God would have a better 2018”. At the close of 2016, I could remember how desperate people were to say Goodbye to 2016 with the hope that they would make it right in 2017. That is always the mood year after year, as an old year passes, people look up with great expectation on what the new year holds, especially if there goals has gone unfulfilled in the passing year. I would say 2017 was a year of seiving out the chaff and focusing on the details,a on what is important. Personally, I learnt to put my energy in the right places, developing a positive mind and saying goodbye to things that drain my energy. I practically said goodbye to alot of my friends since most of the relationships I was in was not productive atall. I did not see any reason to keep them and I found out I was better off. I am ok with just a friend or two, as long as they are contributing positively to my life and I also to them. I have also learnt to do the things I love, to follow my heart and try out new things and not care what any body thinks. At the end of the day I have to make my self happy since it is when I am happy that I can extend that happiness to others. The lesson here is that sometimes you just have to take care of yourself, In 2016 I was taking care of every one else and negleted my self, so am all about taking care of me because when am happy then I can spread this happiness to others. Generally, alot has happened this year, and it includes both the good, the bad and the ugly. The good in that we saw and witnessed all that happened and we are here to tell the story. When it comes to the bad side, this year saw a lot of natural disasters that recked havoc in different parts of the world, from hurricanes to earthquakes and wild fires, probably as a result of Global warming and this futher shows the importance of adoptin a greener lifestyle and reduction in carbon emmissions which deplets the ozone layer. With all that has happened we have survived and as 2018 approaches, we are going to write our wrongs right individually and collectively.

In this series, the focus is on contentment, it is possible that you set personal goals at the begining of the year and probably some of them has gone unfulfilled, don’t play the blame game on yourself or on anyone else. It is actually time to count your blessings and be content with the little you were able to achieve. Contentment simply means a state of being happy and satisfied with what one has. A contented person is not always going above the law to possess riches but satisfied with the one he/she is able to get. Contentment is a mental or emotional state of satisfaction drawn from being at ease in one’s situation, body and mind. Colloquially speaking, contentment is a state of having accepted one’s situation and is a form of happiness. Contentment means being satisfied with one’s possessions, status or situation, though they might be insignificant. A contented person is one who realizes that contentment starts from the inside with a satisfied mind and a cheerful heart. A contented person is one who is satisfied with who they are, what they are and are not looking or demanding for more. In moral sciences, the word ‘contentment’ is used to mean the opposite of greed or excessive and rapacious desire.Contentment is a feeling of calm and active happiness. Somebody who is content does not feel the need to put forth any effort into achieving something because he or she is satisfied with his portion.

WHAT I DO I was in college (studying industrial design), and I was SO SUPER eager to work in fashion. I wanted to spend my days designing and illustrating, and creating fashion products. Really, I couldn’t wait any longer, so I started designing and creating my own handbags. It was my very first fashion business; it started small selling to my friends, and then to the friends of my friends. Then, I stumbled into a big and huge wall: the time and money I was investing in my handbags business weren’t returning as much as I needed to make it survive. So, I started searching for a new way to make money doing something that I ENJOYED, to help me grow my handbags business. That’s when I found out about freelancing. The first ever time I realized I could illustrate fashion from my home, in my spare time, and be paid whatever I wanted I fell in LOVE. I saw a small announcement on a marketplace platform, and I couldn’t believe it! During the whole week, I returned to that website only to read that announcement over and over again. I was stoked, happy, and ultra motivated. And, after a little research about what I needed to sell my services as a fashion designer and illustrator, I implemented all that, and I set up my profile and little portfolio. Then, my fashion freelance business began right there. In the beginning, I just wanted money to keep designing and making my bags, but over time my new business was growing, evolving, and taking me to places I never thought before. It became something I LOVED and CHERISHED, then something I kind of hated, and then again something I truly LOVE and ENJOY. The thing is, you can freelance as a fashion illustrator. Generally, freelancing is offering and selling your services to people or businesses that need them. You can work from wherever you want (from your home, traveling, or from your fave coffee shop). You set your prices, you set the rules, and you work on your own schedule. You’re not considered as an employee, so you don’t get the benefits of working full time in a company, but you get lots of more great benefits. I landed my first ever project after less than a month of publishing my small portfolio and reaching to prospective clients. This first project was designing and taking care of the sample production of a footwear collection that was presented in a show in Milan. In my proposal I included pics of a pair of shoes that I designed in school and their patterns, I mentioned the design process, the production process, and how we could work together. Although I created fashion illustrations for the shoes I designed during that project, the whole project was mainly about design. Yet, my first project in fashion illustration arrived a couple of weeks after that.

Fashion Illustrator Karen Avila talks about choosing a career path as a fashion illustrator and how you too can. 1 | You don’t need a big investment in time and money Well, you can start very small. The family’s laptop + scanner, my fashion illustration tools (paper, watercolors, pencils…), and an internet connection was everything I needed at the beginning. And now on some projects, that’s all I need. You need to set aside some time to set up your website and create your portfolio. And if you have 12-15 free hours per week, you can use them to create one or two fashion illustrations, create content for your marketing efforts (one blog post + social media for the week), and start building your audience. 2 | You can do it anywhere When I started working as a freelancer, I did the work on my home’s dinner table, at school between classes, at my boyfriend’s house, and at the coffee shop. Seriously, you can work from wherever you are, and from wherever you want. It also applies to the city or place you live. You don’t have to wait until you move to New York or Milan, you can start working from wherever you are now. 4 | You can start with the skills you already have A lot of people wait until they learn how to create illustrations with watercolors, and acrylics, and oils, and markers, and digital mediums, and, and, and…. That’s only another way to procrastinate your dreams. If your skills are already strong in one art medium (watercolors, markers, digital, or whatever), and if you already see signs of what could be your style, then you’re ready to go. You can start marketing and on the skills you already have. Of course, you can still learn, explore, and master other things, but you don’t have to wait until you do it to start working as a fashion illustrator. 5 | You can start with basic tools I already mentioned the tools I used on my projects, which are: Laptop Scanner Tools and materials to create my fashion illustrations Photoshop Internet connection (to send the files, and communicate with clients).

6 | You create + do only the things you want If you build and launch your fashion illustration business, you can create your own offerings. You don’t have to work doing something you don’t like, or something you don’t feel experienced or comfortable enough. Do you prefer editorial illustrations over commercial? Do you want your illustrations to be part of fashion products, clothing, wall art, packaging, branding? What kind of products do you want to illustrate? Kidswear, Womenswear, Menswear, Accessories? What illustration techniques do you enjoy the most? Watercolors, markers, color pencils? You set your rules, and you offer what you want, so you enjoy your whole journey. 7 | You create your own process You don’t have to follow anyone’s style or process. You can create, and tweak, and improve your own creative process and style. And also the process you follow to work with clients and delight them, is all up to you. As you learn new things you can implement them into your process, the more experience you get, the more unique your process will be. And the more unique your style + process are, the more you stand out. 8 | You can charge what you want Yes! You charge what you want! You can also work with as many clients as you want – or can handle Sometimes, particularly in the beginning, you’ll have to negotiate, but I believe that if you want a thriving, successful, and authentic business, you have to stick to your pricing and never undervalue your work. So, you don’t have to be limited to a salary; it is sad to have dreams and attach those dreams + goals to the amount of money we can spend every month. When you have a freelance business, you are in charge of how much you want to earn and the hours you want to work. 10 | Clients want to work with you because of your style and talent In many fulltime jobs you get hired according to your salary rate, but if you establish yourself as an experienced fashion illustration with a distinct style, and show off your talents, you’ll start attracting raving clients instead of chasing nightmare clients. This is huge! If you can work on your own schedule, charging what you want, doing what you love, and on top of that you work with delightful + loving clients, then you are in heaven! (me singing with a heavenly voice, haha!)

Nkwo; a seasoned Global Fashion brand. It

is Nigerian and African brand with unique designs that are truly African but then with a modern twist. There collections are intriguing and her Afromania by Nkwo collection was a massive hit on the online site Asos. I was more than a little obsessed with the Tulip dress pictured below: The Creative Director, Nkwo Onwuka has long since moved her base to Nigeria and is currently stocking her pieces on Zinkata.com. Nkwo talks about her journey into the world of Fashion and Entrepreneurship. Can you tell us a bit about your brand? It all started with an obsession with dolls and a mother who taught me how to sew. I earned a degree in Psychology, but my love for making pretty things has turned into a fashion business. The label debuted in the UK at the prestigious Kulture2Couture, where I won the coveted Phoenix Award presented by the Mayor of London’s office in conjunction with the V&A museum. After several years of exploration and experimentation with innovative techniques as a form of preserving traditional craft skills, the label relaunched as an artisanal brand in 2012 and is now based in Nigeria. The clothes are free-spirited and nomadic, inspired by the lives of the wandering people of the African deserts and the great plains. Modern interpretations of early methods of hand crafting like weaving, beading, hand dyeing and embroidery, give new life to fabrics by transforming their conventional uses and making the transition from tradition to modernity. Working closely with artisans and local makers across Africa, the label aims to educate and employ small scale manufacturers/producers, enabling the growth of sustainable businesses.

Nkwo Tulip Dress Your designs have a unique fusion of African traditions and contemporary leanings . Is this intentional? I would say that the fusion in my designs is a function of the way I grew up – half in the UK and half in Nigeria. Being from both cultures is a unique opportunity so instead of closing off one for the other, I have been fortunate enough to gain access to both. Tell us a bit about the inspiration behind your last collection at the Lagos Fashion and Design Week. My SS17 collection, THE OTHER WORLD, was inspired by the fact that even though Africa is embracing modernity, we are still very attached and have a strong belief in things that are not ‘ordinary’. Things that are not to be questioned, just believed. Things that are steeped in tradition, rituals and religion where rites of passage, initiations or prayers take you momentarily from this to the other world. A place where you step into the darkness or float into the light. A place where everything is different, yet strangely familiar… How did it resound with the immediate consumers? I was actually quite overwhelmed at the reaction I got here after the show. I never had so many ‘likes’. Usually, it is more of a 30/70 split, with the majority of the Nigerian audience not really sure what to make of me… too edgy, too quirky or just plain mad! LOL! 35


Nkwo’s collection at the Lagos Fashion and Design week, last month titled ‘Speak Love’ What is the best part of being an African designer producing made in Africa clothes at such a time as this? The best part of being an African designer, working and producing here now is the absolute freedom of spirit in a place where there is still so much to discover. There is limitless inspiration, access to artisans and raw materials and an opportunity to create meaningful change on the continent by involving as many parts of the expanding fashion eco-system as possible. The toughest part? However, for all the positives, production is a huge issue. There is a lack of a skilled labour force, infrastructure, training and for the most part, the workers and myself have difficulty understanding each other. Not just in terms of language but trying to change the mindset and introduce a new way of thinking – more effort and time need to be put into producing items repeatedly with consistent quality, then their local crafts can become more than a subsistence activity and develop into a profitable businesses. What advice would you give an international buyer looking to invest in Nigerian designers? I would advice international buyers looking to invest in Nigerian designers to be mindful of time. Firstly, once prices have been agreed on, things have to progress swiftly, especially now when the cost of raw materials change on an almost weekly/daily basis. Secondly, if an order would normally have a 2 week lead time, it might be wise to give it at least a month or 6 weeks instead.

What is Your biggest achievement till date? My biggest achievement would have to be turning my dream into a reality and keeping it going through all the blood, sweat and tears!!! Ankara or Solid Colour? Which do you gravitate towards? When I lived in the UK, all I wanted to do was immerse myself in print and colour, it must have been my way of coping with those never- ending- grey days. In Nigeria, where everything is so vibrant and in constant motion, solid colours and single tones have a way of providing me with a space in which I can find perfect peace. What is the one thing you wish they told you before you started your entrepreneurial journey? Not to believe that creatives cannot be entrepreneurs. It makes you unable to or refuse to understand the art of making money. It is your business and that responsibility lies with you.

rt X Lagos held the second edition of its annual contemporary art fair on Friday 3rd November to Sunday 5th November 2017 at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos. Staying with its contribution to the increased visibility of African artists, ART X Lagos is reinforcing the visual arts as an important component of the creative industry in Nigeria and Africa, and to position Lagos as an emergent cultural capital on the continent. Building on the success if the debut edition, which welcomed 5.000 vistors to see the works of 65 artists, the second Art X Lagos Art Fair featured a boutique selection of galleries from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and the United Kingdom, in addition to a dynamic program of talks, and curated and interactive projects. The 2017 edition of ART X Lagos delivered a broad, dynamic program of exhibitions, talks and interactive projects. ART X Lagos opened with a special Collectors’ Preview followed ba a VIP Preview. he All Africa Music Awards held on the 12th of November 2017 at the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos. Wizkid clinched three major awards: Best West African Artiste award, The Song of the Year and the Artiste of the year, trumping the likes of Davido, Runtown, Tekno and others. Wizkid’s win came shortly after Davido edged him out at the 2017 MTV EMA by winning the “Best African Act”. Wizkid’s big win has once again renewed his long-standing battle for supremacy with Davido. In his acceptance speech, the Ojuelegba crooner thanked 2baba and DJ Jimmy Jatt for their contributions to the African music landscape. As expected, Wizkid arrived late and his entry sent the sold-out crowd into frenzy. While some jostled to take a selfie with him, others stood up to catch a glimpse of him. His bouncers had a hard time trying to prevent the crowd from mobbing him. This time, he did not rain down Naira bills on his fans. Nigerian acts Simi, M.I, Tiwa Savage, Ycee, Orezi, 2Baba all bagged awards. Meanwhile, midway through her energetic performance at the award ceremony, singer, Seyi Shay, lost her balance, slipped and fell. The singer picked herself up almost immediately and continued performing her hit song, Yolo Yolo. She later recalled the incident by saying “the devil is a liar”. Her fall became a subject of discourse on social media.Some of the winners took to their social media platforms to show appreciation. Filmmaker John Chuka is set to take Nollywood by Storm

Filmmaker John Chuka graduated from the New York Film Academy with the goal of revolutionizing the African film industry. Armed with two business degrees from Holland and America, it dawned on John Chuka that the emerging film industry in Nigeria is a viable venture for wealth creation that can be harnessed. But the constraint then was that while he understood business, he did not know film. It was at this point that John Chuka decided to attend the New York Film Academy. “Considering the fact that I wasn’t going back to school to acquire just a degree, but a product, I chose NYFA because of its hands-on approach to teaching filmmaking and moreover, NYFA is highly recognized as a credible film school in my country of origin, Nigeria.” Thus far, John Chuka is on the right track, he graduated from the prestigious NewYork Film Academy, Hollywood and came back home to Nigeria establishing Asaba Film Academy in 2014, basking in the positive euphoria that trailed his movie The Fetus which won Best Short Film/Trailer and Best Original Score/Soundtrack at the Nollywood and African Film Critics’ Awards (NAFCA) – otherwise known as the African Oscars in Washington D.C. The Fetus is about Catalina, a religious undocumented teenage immigrant, who worked at a nursery in Arizona, but relocates to California as a result of her sexual abuse experience that left her pregnant. Now, working in a Californian sweatshop, trying to climb out of her horrible living conditions, Catalina’s destiny unfolds as she struggles with immigration laws, religious dogmas, abortion laws, and the fetus in her womb. Asaba Film Academy (AFA) a branch of the larger John Chuka Productions is a Film Institute that train and mentor those who have the flair to tap into the amazing opportunities inherent in the Nigerian Movie space. Since inception, the Film Academy has trained over 150 persons cutting across fields in film making to include but not limited to Acting, Screenwriting, Directing etc. for free. John Chuka’s intermittent back and forth to the United States for the sole purpose of shoring prospects of the Academy by way of providing equipments, building capacity, creating relevance and credibility in the industry meant commercial projects were on hold, and focus was given more to students and trainee film projects to ensure necessary professionalism is garnered and sustained. Tokin peterside FOUNDER ARTX LAGOS Tokini Peterside is an amazing young Lady that has alot of laurels on her cap. She hails from Rivers State Nigeria. Born in 1985, She holds a Law degree from the London School of Economics, Solicitors Legal Practice Course Certificate from the College of Law (UK) and a Fashion Marketing Certificate from Istituto Marangoni. She is one of the most successful brand imanagers in Nigeria. She won the Future Awards Corporate Professional of the Year in 2011. She was on the 2013 Guardian list of the most inspiring young Nigerian leaders. She is the Founder of ‘TP-Collective’, a communications company providing entrepreneurs in the creative industry in Nigeria with strong marketing and strategic support to take their business to the next level. Her latest venture is the creation and launch of “ART X Lagos”, a 3-day art fair that will features selected art galleries across Nigeria and Africa to showcase contemporary art. ART X Lagos As an initiative to foster a vibrant visibility of African artists, Art X founding principle is hinged on an interest to reinforce visual arts as an important component of Africa’s creative industry. Structured around a dynamic curatorial programme with an open call for participation to artists and galleries, Art X Lagos model is greatly in favor of an alternative, museum-styled exhibition experience, inviting artists and galleries to propose work that provokes alternate artistic interpretations. Through a broad, dynamic program of exhibitions, talks and interactive projects, and carefully selected panel of curators, Art X Lagos presents a unique snapshot of West Africa’s most exciting contemporary artists, routing for an immersive, multi-sensory experience from a diverse range of contemporary artists, whilst positioning Lagos as an emergent cultural capital on the continent.

In 2015, When Tokini Peterside conceived the idea of Art X Lagos, her aim was to evolve an art brand that would drive a commitment to building ties among artists, collectors, curators, public institutions and galleries in an intimate and friendly environment, not only enticing collectors already acquainted with or new to West African art, but also surprising those already familiar with the region. In this interview with Vanguard, she talks about how she started and more.. How did you go about creating a fair more or less from the scratch? ART X Lagos was launched in November 2016 after months of preparation and research. The idea of an art fair that would serve as a catalyst for the West African art scene was conceived during my work as a strategy consultant for luxury and culture brands. But it wasn’t until my experience of the 2015 Venice Biennale curated by Okwui Enwezor, that I became convinced to turn my ideas into reality. After the Biennale I returned to Paris, France, where I was studying for an MBA at INSEAD and proceeded to develop the idea with my classmates. The concept was to create a Pan- African platform where an audience could experience the diversity of innovative talents in the region, as well as put the city of Lagos on the global culture map as a vibrant art destination. ART X Lagos is in its second year running, what are the important issues facing you? The main challenge we are facing is the same as with most start-up organizations, which is simply that our ambitions and goals significantly outweigh our resources. We consistently have to come up with innovative ways to deliver a world class experience that will impact the arts and wider community, and live up to international expectations, on a moderate budget. Since founding ART X Lagos what advances and developments have you seen in the region, and how is the local art scene developing? We have witnessed a lot of change in the Lagos art scene since launching ART X Lagos. First, our goal to grow the base of local collectors appears to be materializing much faster than we expected, with many individuals who were first-time buyers at ART X Lagos, progressing gradually on their way towards becoming committed collectors. We also noticed that the exposure to an international audience, which ART X Lagos provided to local Nigerian artists, led to several of them being approached by international art galleries for representation and also resulted in acquisitions by renowned museum collections such as the Zeitz MOCAA, thus beginning the internalization of the careers of certain Nigerian artists. Another goal achieved was our motivation to democratize the art world, by welcoming thousands of guests from all sections of society to ART X Lagos. This has led to the lowering of the average age of visitors at local art exhibitions and events, with greater numbers of young people being encouraged to participate in these experiences. How many galleries participated this year? And what is the percentage of international exhibitors? 14 galleries exhibited as well as three independent artists. Out of the 14 galleries, 9 were international exhibitors drawn from African countries and the Diaspora, such as South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali and the United Kingdom, reflecting our identity as a truly pan-African platform.

Nigeria was proudly represented by the following galleries – Bloom Art by UgomaAdegoke, SMO Contemporary by Sandra Obiago, Art House The Space by KavitaChellaram, Signature Beyond by RahmanAkar and Retro Africa by Dolly Balogun. Who would you say were the most significant artists that showcased in this year’s fair? We were delighted to have work by YinkaShonibare MBE alongside established Nigerian artists such as KainebiOsahenye and MurainaOyelami. We also showcased works of emerging Nigerian artists such as ModupeolaFadugba and KadaraEnyeasi alongside some of Africa’s most exciting artists such as ZaneleMuholi (South Africa), Joel MpahDooh (Cameroon) and AmadouSanogo (Mali) to name a few. What makes ART X Lagos special to the region and how do local artists respond? ART X Lagos is special to the region because, outside of the two art fairs organized in South Africa, we are the only other international contemporary art fair in sub-Saharan Africa. This means that for artists and galleries who seek to connect with collectors elsewhere on the continent, we present a unique opportunity. As a fairly young fair, what are your long term aspirations and goals for Art X? Our long term goal is to be not just the only art fair in West Africa, but also to be a leader on the African art fair circuit. How has the increasing numbers of art fairs that have appeared globally in recent years, affected the West African art market, which has also seen a fundamental change in the way that artworks are purchased? In the last five years, two Africa-focused art fairs have sprung up outside the continent – 1-54 and AKAA – and they have taken the works of African artists to London, Paris and New York. In addition, the South Africa-based fairs have consolidated their local market. These developments have exposed West African artists to a broader audience, and have contributed to the growth of the sector in the region. Who do art fairs, such as yours, benefit and who are they detrimental for? Art fairs such as ours benefit artists and the galleries that represent them. We provide an outstanding visibility platform through which their work can be discovered, and new relationships with collectors and institutions can be formed. Could you tell us a little more about the selection process? What are the criteria for getting a booth at Material? Our art fair is via invitation. We extend invitations to the leading galleries in Nigeria, across Africa and the Diaspora, to join us each year. There’s a huge amount of buzz around Lagos in the art world these days, in part because of projects like ART X. What do you think of the current state of the city’s art scene, and where do you think it’s going? The Lagos art scene is thriving, thanks to unrelenting work by several important players over many years. Before ART X Lagos came on the scene, longstanding institutions such as Terra Kulture, Nike Art Gallery,Art House Contemporary and African Artists’ Foundation had been working tirelessly to support artists and position the arts sector as a critical component within the creative industry. Their work inspired many others such as myself to get involved. As other players continue to join the fold, this can only lead ultimately to the establishment of Lagos as a global cultural capital. 42


What is the main goal of Art X Lagos? To magnify the patronage of African artists across the continent, and to inspire the future generations of African artists. When the dust settles after the fair, what’s next for you? Building on the success of our art fair, and evolving the ART X brand.

Northern Belle For Spring ‘18, go-to womenswear brand, Northern Belle, is striking a perfect balance between modesty, simplicity, and elegance whilebreathing new ideas into what is normal and acceptable in womenswear. For this LookBook creative director Salma Ahmadu kept the lines clean and form-fitting while taking a few more risks with layering without overwhelming her fabric choices. In this mix, she also acknowledges a few trends that she employed in keeping the collection up-to-date. Additionally, all materials used in executing this collection, were locally sourced, staying very close to home in both sourcing and execution. This collection, is for an intentional woman. The Calabar festival which is the biggest street party in Africa is happening again here in Calabar, Cross River State, Southeast Nigeria. The countries to include, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, Greece, Brazil, Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Rwanda amongst others. Most of them will have their own band on the grand finale of the carnival which is scheduled for Dec. 27 and Dec. 28. The annual month-long carnival brings tourists from all over the world to the state and has been the melting point of Africa’s hospitality due to its diverse tourism events and sites, the green environment and the warm hospitality of the people. As Calabar is a state that takes its tourism seriously it never presents something short of expectations. With Music performances from both Local and international acts, its definitely a fun place to go relax and have fun for the Holidays. There is also the Boat regatta, Fashion shows, Christmas Village which is the Venue for Christmas shopping and traditional dances the biggest canival in Africa is definitely worth the effort to attend every December. 15 PLACES TO GO AND THINGS TO DO IN CALABAR Calabar often referred to as Canaan City is a city in Cross River State, in south southern Nigeria. Calabar is the capital of Cross River State. The original name for Calabar was Akwa Akpa, from the Efik language. The city is adjacent to the Calabar and Great Kwa rivers and creeks of the Cross River (from its inland delta). Calabar is arguably the biggest tourist city in Western Africa. With its numerous tourist attractions and hospitable culture of the Calabar locals, Calabar lives up to its name, Come and Live and Be At Rest The National Museum, Calabar Also known as The Old Residency Museum. The National Museum, which was originally known as the Government House is a prefabricated structure of Scandinavian red pine wood shipped from Britain in 1884 on the instruction of Consul Edward Hewett and erected in Old Calabar to accommodate the early British Administration. The building which served as both the residence and administrative headquarters of the colonial government is one of the only few history museums in Nigeria and hosts some of the most preserved artefacts and documents dating back to pre-colonial period. Slave Museum Located on the site of a fifteenth-century slave-trading warehouse in Marina Beach. The Slave History Museum, Calabar, was established in 2007 and commissioned on 17 March 2011. It is a rich resource on the activities of slave trade which was rampant in the Calabar area in the 15th century. Drill Rehabilitation Center Drill Rehabilitation Center is located at Drill Ranch, Calabar. This wild life sanctuary was built by Lisa Gadsby and Peter Jenkins in 1991 to preserve the already endangered African primate; drills. After recording over 250 births, the Drill Rehabilitation Center is the most successful captive breeding of an endangered primate in the world. The Drill ranch and rehabilitation center is a wild life sanctuary that hopes to preserve and ensure continuity of the endangered primate species drills. It serves to rehabilitate drills with members of their species and also provides a safe haven for orphaned chimpanzees.

5.Kwa Waterfalls Kwa Falls is a spectacular waterfall located in a narrow, steep gorge on the headwaters of the Kwa. Kwa River where Kwa Fall cascades down resistant basement rocks, is located in the Oban division of the Cross River National Park. A deep plunge pool forms at the bottom of the waterfall which is characterised by its well arranged staircase of 234 steps from the top to bottom. The nearby Kwa River Sand Beach is the icing on the cake, making Kwa falls, Nigeria’s own tropical paradise.

Cross River National Park The Cross River National Park is a national park located in Cross River State, Nigeria. There are two separate sections, Okwangwo (established 1991) and Oban (established 1988). The park is known as the Pride of Nigeria and for good reason, it is home to endangered species of animals and plants and has been listed as a biodiversity hotspot.

Chief Ekpo Bassey’s House This historic house is situated at 19, Boko Street, Calabar, and was the residence of the famous Chief Ekpo Bassey. It is now a national monument. The house was imported in sections from England and then assembled on site. Mary Slessor’s House Mary Mitchelle Slessor arrived in Nigeria in 1876, as a missionary worker of the United Presbyterian Church. She lived in the Akpap Okoyong, Odukpani Local Government Area. She built herself a two bedroom mud house with a veranda, a store and a parlour. She called it a “Caravan” while the villagers called it “fine pass all”. In 1889, a missionary carpenter, Mr Owens, was commissioned to erect a more permanent structure for her. The walls were made of iron sheets while the doors and windows were made of wood. The staircase leading to the first floor had twenty one steps and was supported by two pillars and wooden railings. Since Mary Slessor’s death, the Odukpani Local Government Council has used the house as a Rest Home for other Missionaries and as a Primary Health Care Centre. Today, the property is fully restored and an important tourist site. Statue of Mary Slessor This statue was erected in sacred memory of Mary Slessor of Calabar. Born Aberdeen, Scotland 2 December 1848. Died in Calabar, Nigeria, 13 January 1915. It can be found in Creektown, Calabar. The Tomb of Mary Slessor Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary from Dundee, sent in 1876 to Calabar by the United Presbyterian Church. She is best remembered for putting an end to the abhorrent traditional practise of putting twins and their mothers to death. She studied and learned the Efik language of Cross River, so that she could speak it as fluently as the local people. She lived in Calabar for over forty years until she passed away in 1915. Her picture currently appears on a Clydesdale Bank Commemorative ten pound bank note. Her tomb is located at the Eyamba Street Cemetery in Duke Town and is a major tourist attraction. When Queen Elizabeth II visited Nigeria she made a special visit to the tomb to lay a wreath on Mary Slessor’s grave.
