FROM THE CROW’S NEST by Graham Nystrom Station Manager

Happy New Year to all connoisseurs of community radio! APPY NEW YEAR CONNOISSEURS

“There aren’t enough words to describe the contribution Joanne and Kathleen have made toour News Department in the last 4+ years.”

WINTER 2022 THE CURRENT

of community radio! 2022 is shaping up to be a big year for KMUN , the little community station with a great big heart. We are saying a fond farewell to our illustrious news team of Joanne Rideout and Kathleen Morgain, and we are welcoming aboard Katie Frankowicz as KMUN ’s next News Director. The Tillicum Foundation Board of Directors has several new Board Members, and finally, we are about to hit the ground running with a comprehensive strategic planning session to guide KMUN ’s efforts over the next several years of community service. There aren’t enough words to describe the contribution Joanne and Kathleen have made to our News Department in the last 4+ years. We are so fortunate to have such journalistic professionals to guide us through some of the most challenging news cycles any of us have experienced in our lifetime. As they hand the reins to Katie, we honor their work and dedication to keeping our listeners informed with trusted news and journalism. They have both earned a very happy retirement, and we wish them all the best in the next chapter of their journey. WELCOME KATIE!

University of Oregon, and here are some of her thoughts about the role of local journalism: “There are many things that are crucial to a community’s health and I believe strong local journalism is a key component. In my work with local news organizations, I have seen how my reporting can inform community debates and policy discussions, tell previously untold stories and hold people in power accountable. I have a strong foundation in journalism and a deep and varied knowledge of North Coast communities. The News Director position at Coast Community Radio represents an opportunity for me to dive into new things while also honing skills that have become second nature to me. I bring a solid understanding of how to report news ethically, accurately and efficiently. Though I have primarily worked at small, local papers, I maintain a network of sources that spans the Pacific Northwest.” WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS!

I am very pleased to welcome our newly-elected and appointed Board Members, Sturges Dorrance, After a nationwide Alyssa Evans, Ramey Holsman, Mick Mortlock search, the KMUN hiring committee is and Cindy Price. Learn about them on our website at kmun.org/board-of-directors, and thrilled to welcome Katie to the KMUN Board Vice President Larry Scott will tell you more about our strategic planning efforts in his staff, and I ask that you please help Katie article on page 3. feel welcome as she takes over the critical role If I had to choose two words to describe my of telling the important stories of this region on hopes for 2022, I would go with kindness and KMUN ’s airwaves. togetherness. From the Board HIS IS THE TIME of year that the Tillicum Foundation Board of Directors, newly

constituted since the November annual meeting, takes a pause to look where we have been and consider where we are going. More specifically, what things are we doing well and want to continue, what things we are doing but perhaps not well and how to improve, and then what things are we not doing that perhaps we should. This last goal can also be called strategic planning. In years past this has involved a day-long retreat with the Board and Staff. This year will be a bit different in that we have sought outside expertise from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters along with a nonprofit consultant to facilitate our thinking and planning. We must consider not only goals but also challenges; for example, the course of the pandemic is unpredictable but likely to be with us for a while—how will this impact our efforts and how can we mitigate this impact? Issues on the table include, among others, building an endowment, expanding listening area and membership, and expanding local and regional news. As we get into this, the Board will be collecting and analyzing data about our current status; with this in mind we will develop a process for achieving goals. This will involve homework followed by a 1- or 2-day retreat in early 2022. KMUN is a community radio station and as such there is the general feeling that we want a more balanced organization that addresses and bridges the various diversities in our community. The specifics needed to do this are yet to be defined, so stay tuned. Larry Scott, Vice President of Tillicum Foundation Board of Directors

New Volunteers! ’M SO THRILLED TO announce that we

have three new volunteers. Normally that would be par for the course; pre-COVID we would get new volunteers all the time. But THESE DAYS that’s a huge gift and not an uncomplicated one.

“...one of these charming volunteers will likely answer and assist you.” WINTER 2022 THE CURRENT

Front desk volunteers are the gatekeepers, the phone answerers and the log keepers; Responsible for making sure that there is a trackable record for every person that comes through the door. Our front desk volunteers are shining examples of patience, flexibility, kindness and competence. They were the first people (after staff) to start navigating these crazy new COVID protocols and practices here at the Tillicum House. It’s been, and continues to be, a wild learning curve. Paul, Lowell and Eric joined the front desk crew in recent months. They’re all new to the area and have super interesting backgrounds: A philosophy professor (and musician), a former teacher (for 25 years) of World History, Rock and Roll History, and Human Geography (and musician), and an

architectural historian - and they each have an extensive community radio background! How lucky can we get? Our returning front desk volunteers have been incredible as well. We’re learning together how to pivot gracefully and skillfully, keep each other safe and help our listeners have the best experience possible. When you call the station – and I hope you do 503.325.0010 – one of these charming volunteers will likely answer and assist you. Feel free to thank them for volunteering and welcome them to our incredible KMUN family.

FROM THE NEWS DEPARTMENT by Joanne Rideout

Change is in the air and that’s a good thing APPY NEW YEAR TO all. As we open a new year, talking about news at KMUN ,

it’s important to note that everything has its season, and as such, seasons change. Change is, as we know, an inevitable part of life. KMUN is on the cusp of an important change:

“Most important for the station is that this change makes room...”

The station is taking on a new news director, something that is a big shift for the staff and for the station’s listeners. Our local news coverage is something we’ve worked hard to make solid and relevant, and it’s one of the cornerstones of the station’s offerings to its listeners. And even though most of us tend to resist change because it disrupts what we’re used to, this change is good.

I’ve been fortunate to be kicking around KMUN for about 20 years: first as a volunteer, then a staff reporter and news host, then manager for seven years, and finally, I’ve been your news director for the past three years or so. I stuck around after my turn as manager because I wanted to sink my teeth back into local news reporting, and the opportunity arose for me to do that. In recent years, with help from our talented news host and reporter Kathleen Morgain, we’ve bolstered our local news presence on the air and fine tuned it. Now it’s time for me to do other things, and pursue other interests that I’ve put on the back burner for many years.

Most important for the station is that this change makes room for someone new to have a turn, bringing fresh energy and approaches. So allow me to proudly introduce you to KMUN News Director Katie Frankowicz, a person who many listeners know as a terrific reporter for our local newspaper, the Astorian. Katie is a talented journalist who will bring you important local stories and news coverage. She’s making a big leap from print to radio, and she’ll be learning the ropes in that new role. As we make this transition, I’d like to ask you all a favor, as listeners and members of the station: Please welcome Katie into your lives and homes with the same grace and kindness with which you welcomed me 20 years ago, in a way that has buoyed my spirit ever since. I have loved going on the air each weekday morning to talk with you. I’ve felt fortunate to serve our community in this way. I have felt so supported by our listeners, aware that you appreciated my efforts, worried about me when I sounded tired, and generally made me feel that my work was worth doing. Continued on page 8

Your contribution today helps KMUN offer what only local public radio can successfully achieve THE VOICES OF THE COMMUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY. YOUR SUPPORT MAKES IT ALL POSSIBLE. COAST COMMUNITY RADIO

WINTER 2022 THE CURRENT

Local news reporting fills a terribly important role in our current world – we need truthful reporting on issues in our communities. It’s vital, worth supporting, and I’ve been very committed to it. It’s been an honor to be your station’s news director. Now Katie will fill those shoes and she deserves a warm welcome. Part of KMUN ’s mission and legacy is the art of passing the torch to new people as they come along and choose to get involved. It’s how we keep the station going, and what’s best for the station has always been one of my guiding lights since I first got involved with KMUN . So with that in mind, please welcome Katie into your homes and hearts. Her presence on the KMUN airwaves is a good change that will help keep the station going strong for years to come. And for people who are concerned: I’ll still be doing the Ship Report – it’s something that I love that fuels my spirit still, even after doing it for going on two decades. So I’m looking forward to a new year of the Ship Report with great anticipation, grateful as always to have that opportunity to connect with you on the air. With much love and hope for a good 2022 for us all, I’ll see you on the radio.

Thank You to Our Volunteers!

2021 PORGRAMMER OF THE YEAR: LLOYD BOWLER

2021 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: PETE SERAFIN

2021 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: TODD LIPPOLD

2021 PORGRAMMER OF THE YEAR: RICHARD DAWSON

Lloyd has, like Richard, been covering a large swath of programming throughout the pandemic, and has been an integral part of the lineup! You can hear him on Scandinavian Hour and Celtic Aire on Saturday afternoons, Wednesday Morning Classics, and in the Bedtime Stories reader rotation. Here he’s sporting his Scandinavian Hour uniform for a Homegrown recording session. Thank you, Lloyd!

Pete has been a fantastic addition to the Morning Classics team! He’s technically been a host for nearly 2 years, but is this year’s “rookie” recipient because he hit the ground running with Homegrown programming after only a couple of live shifts before the pandemic sent us all home in 2020. Catch Pete’s enlightening Classical program every Thursday morning, 6-8AM on KMUN !

This man never says no to a challenge. Todd has become an incredible asset to the station in quality hosting and engineering, building and grounds maintenance, highway cleanup crew, Reading On Astoria Radio, pandemic Community Calendar production, general positivity liaison, and now as the Board of Directors secretary. Thank you for everything you do, and the joy you bring along with you, Todd!

Richard has been covering a number of shows throughout the pandemic, while some of our hosts have been unable to produce remotely. You can hear Richard on Sundays with Gospel Train, Saturdays with Shady Grove, and on Tuesday Morning Classics. Thank you for your dedication, Richard!

2021 TILLICUM FOUNDATION DIRECTOR’S AWARD: JIM DOTT Jim has been involved with the station from its earliest days, and has brought his patience, kindness, and compassion to every endeavor: from Bedtime Stories to Poetry Month to music hosting, and everything in between. Jim has coordinated the crew of Bedtime Stories readers for the length of the pandemic, bringing production values higher than ever before, and making sure KMUN continues to bring you wonderful children’s programming, 5 nights a week. Thank you for all you do for the station, Jim! We are so lucky to have you. 2021 LINMARIE DICIANNI “WE CAN DO IT!” AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY VOLUNTEERISM: WILLIAM ROSE William has brought his talents to the station through his beautiful work in remodeling the upstairs development office into what we now affectionately call The Rose Room. His work has ensured the longevity of the upstairs portion of the Tillicum House, and provided the staff with a beautiful and functional working environment. Thank you for your skill and generosity, William! The station is forever indebted. COAST COMMUNITY RADIO

FROM THE NEWS DEPARTMENT by Kathleen Morgain

Transition Time NE EVENING OVER 20 summers

ago, I was picking blackberries on the local wildlife refuge with the car radio turned up. It was my first time listening to Bedtime Stories on KMUN. Over the next few weeks I tuned in many more times to hear shows like The Scandinavian Hour and Troll Radio Revue. I was happily surprised when one of the community calendar announcements mentioned an event in tiny, unincorporated Skamokawa, where we had recently settled. The station became part of our lives here. Several years later I joined the KMUN staff as a part time morning news host. It has been a privilege to work here. Sharing the efforts of the (often unpaid) public officials and civic organization members who constantly work to improve local infrastructure and public services has been a core mission of KMUN news and public affairs since the station’s beginnings. I’m grateful to KMUN for having been part of that work. During the pandemic, KMUN has improved its own infrastructure, making it possible to host the news live from remote locations, and quickly upload news stories from more of our coverage area. As a result, in the coming months listeners will hear more local news from contributors on both sides of the river. I’m looking forward to being part of that effort. KMUN has always been, and will continue to be,

committed to presenting fact-based and responsible news and information.

Don’t miss Charlie, one of our newest hosts, who has taken up the mantle of Classic Rock & Roll (Sun 1-3pm), and keep an ear out for more additions as we start to bring new folks on board for the first time since the pandemic brought our Radio 101 class to a screeching halt in 2020. It’s about time!

Jack Harris, who carried his half of the TMF torch with a singular brand of humor and heart, to help us survive the late-week slog. (Don’t worry! You can still hear Jack on Dead Friday!) Please welcome Kati Claborne back to the airwaves, as she puts her spin on TMF, alternating with the inimitable and effervescent Spinnin’ Lynn, every other Thursday morning.

both personally and professionally. For me this takes a commitment to practicing honesty and open-mindedness. I look into my actions, thoughts and the feedback I receive. As the Development Director at KMUN , this also means lots of thinking, planning ahead and being organized. I am a big fan of author and journalist, Malcom Gladwell’s saying “Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.” He also says it takes 10,000 hours of practicing one skill to have a chance at being an expert at it. I am not saying I am an expert at anything. The actions I take are often gleaned from several nonprofit blogs and webinars I attend with other development people. KMUN ’s membership in the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB) is also a great source of information and provides contacts with knowledgeable people. I have learned many effective strategies that I try to incorporate at KMUN . One thing that sets me apart from other development people is that I do not only

oversee fundraising. I also have an active role in fundraising, in the form of securing underwriting, developing print advertising in this publication, and administering the Business memberships. This variety in my job brings me challenge and contentment. Something about the radio that I have always held at arm’s length is the equipment and software it takes to broadcast. Well, in 2022 that is changing! I am working with Nevada to bring on software that will regulate, rotate and record everything about the underwriting air spots. It will give our underwriters accurate exposure and billing information which will make it easier for large businesses to value the marketing capabilities of KMUN . This software will even create the final stage of any sale – the invoice! With this foray into the nuts and bolts of broadcast, who knows where it will end? Next up could be that birding module I have in the back of my mind! Stay tuned!

YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE IN THE COLUMBIA-PACIFIC REGION

The Tillicum Foundation stands firmly against racism in all its forms. KMUN is your local source for high quality and thoughtfully curated programming, from our news and public affairs to music and entertainment. It is our duty to provide this in a way that is conscious of implicit bias, systemic racism, and societal inequities. In our programming, we will: • Evaluate new programming and decisions based on our mission statement in order to amplify oppressed and underrepresented voices in our community and beyond. • Monitor our current programming offerings and practices, looking at where we can make improvements to better represent a variety of identities and viewpoints.

• Seek out programming that will fill in our deficiencies.

• Create equitable access to our programs and services.

In our administration, we will:

• Create a staff, Board and volunteer base that reflect our community.

• Provide our staff, Board and volunteers with opportunities for inclusive conversation and training on diversity, equity, inclusion and justice and how these issues pertain to our personal lives as well as our work at the station.

We hope that you will join us in this effort to create a more just future.
