LeMay– AMERICA’S CAR MUSEUM

CEO David Madeira

BEHIND THE WHEEL WHEN WE FIRST PROMOTED THE IDEA OF “AMERICA’S CAR MUSEUM” OVER A DECADE AGO,WE PROMISED TO BE SOMETHING SPECIAL, SOMETHING UNIQUE. WE SAID WE’D GO BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL NOTION OF A CAR MUSEUM—CARS SITTING IN CHRONOLOGICALLY ORDERED DISPLAYS, FEW, IF ANY, ANCILLARY EVENTS AND A MEMBERSHIP BASE LIMITED TO THE IMMEDIATE AREA.

I WE’RE ADDING SOMETHING NEW COURTESY OF OUR GOOD FRIENDS AND STAUNCH SUPPORTERS AT HAGERTY

love this time of year. But before you call for an intervention, know I’m not talking about the weather. What I love is the start of another year at America’s Car Museum. Every successful business and organization has to have that special something that makes it unique, that differentiates it from the rest. In our case, it’s year-long, non-stop excitement. In addition to captivating and informative exhibits, innovative events and activities are what distinguish us, what makes ACM… ACM! April is really when things kick into high gear but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been active since January 1. The early days of 2016 saw us conclude a successful winter cross-country trip in three of the Museum’s collection cars. Check out The Drive Home recap on page 13. Later in January, we held our Board meeting and hosted Club Auto members in Scottsdale. February’s 2nd annual Drive the Blues Away evening of music, food and libation was a sold-out success. From this point on it’s just one thing after another. April sees the kick off of a ‘member-tested’ favorite that continues through the summer, Cruise-Ins at ACM. May adds Take a Spin and the opening of the BMW exhibit with an exclusive member preview. In June, the ACM campus becomes

“Casino Royale” for a night at the Wheels & Heels Annual Gala. Later in the month the lawn of Haub Family Field will see the first of four Drive-In Movies. And on it goes into July, August and September. You’ll find articles and ads detailing these and other events and offerings scattered throughout the pages of OpenRoad. In addition to proven summer signature highlights such as Cars & Cigars, the Vintage Motorcycle Festival and Pacific Northwest Concours d’Elegance, we’re adding something new courtesy of our good friends and staunch supporters at Hagerty. We’ve been chosen to host one of their nationwide Hagerty Driving Experience programs on September 17. The program is designed to teach young people the art of driving a stick-shift car… and not just any car, a classic! Read more about it on page 8. There you have it, enough to fill at least six months worth of calendar space. Oh, and lest I forget, we’ll be announcing some ACM sponsored road tours as well. After all, it’s what the objects of our passion are designed to do. I refer you back to paragraph one, last sentence… the part about what makes ACM, “ACM.” See you on the road!

I like hot rods. I’ve never had one but I like them. Maybe it’s because they’re just so “American”... in the best possible sense. You know, equal parts Yankee ingenuity, rugged individualism, distain for conformity and a complete ‘damn the torpedoes’ disregard for personal safety. The reason I’ve never had one is because my teenage heart belonged to an equally unreliable and dangerous category of car... the English sports car. Without going into too much detail, while in high school I labored for two years in a succession of tedious and demeaning part-time jobs in order to scrape together the cash to buy a well used 1953 Austin-Healey 100. I was finally old enough to drive the car in my senior year and was rewarded for my labors with a succession of roadside strandings, lack of parts availability, incompetent mechanical service and endless ridicule from my hot rod driving

“friends.” I was able to drive the car for a scant seven months before the engine ate itself in the middle of New Mexico. It was replaced with a 1957 Triumph TR3 that saw me through college. I now have a 1963 Triumph TR3 my wife has named “stinky.”I will sell it as soon as my latest Healey 100 emerges from a two-plus year restoration. Back to hot rods. The reason why they’re currently on my mind is because this issue of OpenRoad contains several articles dealing with rods. Our Guest Editorial is provided by Dan Warner of the Southern California Timing Association, an organization that is to hot rods and speed what the singularity is to the origin of the cosmos. The featured car in AutoBiography is a prized member of the Museum’s permanent collection, a very rare 1932 Ford Sedan Delivery named “Hot Rod Shop.” Mr. Warner’s article is a fascinating portrait of this historic organization and its crucial involvement in the very earliest days of hot rod culture. Were it not for the SCTA’s imposition of order, sanity and concern for safety, hot rodding may have gone extinct through sheer participant attrition... either via jail time or a rapid and catastrophic deceleration caused by an immovable object... usually a tree or a telephone pole. Anyone reading this who has had the good fortune to experience an SCTA administered speed trial at places like El Mirage, Muroc or Bonneville knows just how important the organization has been and continues to be.

2nd Annual Drive the Blues Away Rocks the Night Away With 500 people in attendance, Drive The Blues Away was a sellout success! A big “thanks” goes out to sponsors Emerald Queen Casino and Heritage Bank for their support of this event. Performers Jones & Fischer, Stephanie Anne Johnson and the Stacy Jones Band rocked the house! Fender brought a great selection of guitars and amps for “test drives” and raffled off three Stratocaster guitars. You can check out more photos of the event on ACM’s Facebook page. As for food and drink, attendees enjoyed the best of both. X Group Catering provided delicious tastings from Asado, Engine House 9 and The Pine Room. Finally, we can’t forget the fabulous local breweries and distilleries in attendance— American Brewing Company, Chambers Bay Distillery, Elysian Brewing, Engine House No. 9, Heritage Distilling Company, Inc, Letterpress Distillery, Magnolia Moonshine, Narrows Brewing, Puyallup River Brewing, Scratch Distillery, Seattle Distilling Company and Sidetrack Distillery. the assumption any book dealing with fifty cars

has to be great, we bought, we read and in one case, we read and assembled.

Fifty Cars That Changed The World – by Andrew Nathum First off, let it be noted any book purporting to contain a definitive list of anything should carry the subtitle, “In my opinion.” For instance, “The Ten Most Staggeringly Gorgeous Turtleneck Sweaters of All Time – In my opinion.” So it is with books of this type. The author is Principal Curator of Technology and Engineering at the Science Museum, London—ergo, he has a right to his opinion, a very Eurocentric opinion. The photos are nice, the text well written and the vehicles cited include most of the usual suspects… the Model T, VW Beetle, Mini and the Salmson San Sebastian … excuse me, the what? But hey, it is his opinion, a very very strange opinion. Cars, a Complete History – With 50 Easy-to-Make Models – no author cited The same, “In someone’s opinion” definitely applies here. As for the “complete history” part, we’re not sure what to make of that… completely oddball perhaps. Oh, and the “easy-to-make” thing, sure, if you have an advanced degree in origami. Putting all that aside, what we have here is a fun way to do a little familial bonding while getting a child interested in cars (albeit one with superior dexterity, infinite patience and no self-esteem issues). The accompanying text is minimal at best but does lightly brush the high points. One bit of advice, start simple. The Smart Car and Citroen 2CV, as shown above, are perfect starter projects.

he role members play in supporting ACM’s day-to-day operations can never be lauded enough. It’s why we devote a portion of every spring issue—our Milestones Annual Report—to listing those of you who put your money where your heart is. Take the time to scan those pages. Chances are you’ll find many of the names familiar. The shear number of families and individuals listed and the aggregate monetary support garnered is both impressive and indicative of the strength and appeal of ACM. However, beyond membership dues and gate receipts, there is another crucial reservoir of support…

The first thing you see when you flip open your copy of OpenRoad is an inside cover filled with colorful images… corporate marks, more commonly known as “logos.” To the right on page one, you’ll find a full-page “Major Sponsor Recognition” ad. The inside back cover continues the parade of trademarks along with lists of additional providers and enthusiast groups, all of whom lend support to ACM. The companies and organizations noted represent everything from industry giants to small, locally based firms and car clubs. Most, but not all, share some connection to cars.

Let’s take the recent The Drive Home crosscountry tour as a case study in how these synergies of support benefit the Museum (the result was a media recognition bonanza). To stand out in a crowded field, every like institution has to have ‘key differentiators,’ those things that make it unique… that give it its special character. One of the many things that make ACM different is our willingness to get our cars out on the road… and maybe even a little dirty. An adventure like The Drive Home required a team effort and a great deal of support from sponsors and providers.

In descending order of support from Presenting Sponsor State Farm to a local car club like the Gallopin’ Gerties, every entity represented plays a role in the short-term success and long-term sustainability of America’s Car Museum. When it comes to ensuring a secure future, the generosity of sponsors, partners, providers and donors act as ACM’s version of the 401K… without the retirement aspect of course. We will never “retire.” Our “job” is too important, and too much fun!

When it comes to keeping ACM financially sound, sponsors at the Official Provider ($100K or more over 5 years) and Sustaining Partner ($100K annually) levels are of particular importance. These large sum and multi-year commitments not only provide sustainability, they allow us the luxury of consistent long-range planning. Anyone in business knows how vital that is. Furthermore, their willingness to put their mainstream and social media promotional efforts behind us has helped give the ACM brand an international presence. Continued page 12 OPENROAD 11

o, beyond day-to-day operations, where does all this support go? How do you, as members, benefit? The Drive Home Recap

Take three vintage American cars from ACM’s collection. Send them out in the dead of winter on an epic 3,000+ mile cross-country road trip. And have the whole thing culminate at one of America’s preeminent auto shows, the North American International Auto Show. Sounds a bit crazy… crazy like a fox! The resulting cascade of media attention ACM received was priceless. The message it sent firmly positioned the Museum as a place of fresh and adventurous ideas, one not afraid to let its cars—be cars… out where they belong, on the open road. The vision behind the drive was summed up perfectly by ACM CEO David Madeira, “When a car that is built to run sits motionless, it rots. Let’s get them out and drive them!”

Above right: ACM’s collection team mounts a fresh set of winter tires on each car courtesy of Michelin. Left to right: Stops along the way to meet with fellow enthusiasts included the Roasterie in Kansas City, Hyman Limited Classic Cars in St. Louis and journey’s end at the COBO Center in Detroit. Below right: The convoy is dwarfed by the enormity of Utah’s high desert winter landscape.

n A constantly changing schedule of exhibits n Innovative and family-friendly education programs for all ages n Promotional activities that attract major media attention like The Drive Home n Capital support for building maintenance, improvements and equipment n Support for event hosting that generates income and acts as a marketing tool

The take away from all this is simple. The support stream that flows from our sponsors, partners, providers and donors allows ACM to be “ACM” … a vibrant, innovative and adventurous institution. In no small way, they are what led you to become, and continue to be, a member of America’s Car Museum. You can show your gratitude by supporting these special friends of ACM with your patronage whenever possible.

And drive them we did. The kick off leg featured lunch in Portland hosted by Keith Martin’s Sports Car Market magazine followed by a snowstorm plagued crawl over Government Camp and Mt. Hood. The snow put the crew behind schedule for the first night’s stay in Bend but a hearty group of car clubbers stayed on to welcome them at a local brew pub. The pub even extended its hours to make sure the team got dinner and a pint of their award winning craft beer. The following eleven days saw an average of 240 miles/day added to each car’s odometer. Especially gratifying were the number of enthusiasts who turned out at each stop to celebrate the cars and their drivers. In addition to impromptu get-togethers at cruise-ins and restaurants along the way, Hagerty put on a New Year’s Eve party at Club Auto Colorado in Lakewood and ACM Presenting Sponsor State Farm hosted the group while in Bloomington, Illinois. The Drive Home ended with a spin down famed Woodward Avenue and a reception hosted by Opportunity Detroit where the cars—complete with road salt, dust and grime— were put on display. But don’t worry, they received a thorough cleaning and buff when they returned to ACM. Look for more of these somewhat zany but inspired adventures in the future.

A Synergy of Support

NAIAS / Detroit Auto Dealers Association – arranged for imbedded journalist on the drive, hosted events in Detroit and provided display space at the Auto Show. Opportunity Detroit – hosted major events in Detroit and media event in Cadillac Square. State Farm – contributed $50,000 to underwrite costs of car prep and trip expenses— hotels, food, events etc. and hosted an event in Bloomington. Coker Tire – provided show tires for the three vehicles while on display at NAIAS. Hagerty – provided an SUV as an ‘advance’ logistics vehicle, hosted an enthusiast event at Club Auto Colorado and promoted similar events along the route. Michelin – provided winter tires for all three vehicles and the trouble truck & SUV.

Plycar – provided transportation for the vehicles’ return to ACM. Shell – supplied fuels for all five vehicles and hosted a Chicago area event.

CM’s exhibit schedule for 2016 is shaping up to be another exciting journey through the diverse history of the automobile. Like that history, upcoming exhibits present an equally diverse set of offerings.

When you think of all the unique vehicles America has brought to the world, the iconic hot rod has to be at or near the top of that list. Equally iconic in automotive lore is that most fabled of American roads… Route 66. That we should combine them in our refreshed and now open Route 66: Dream of the Mother Road exhibit is only natural.

BMW Propelling a Century of Innovation Opening on May 7, another automotive icon will take center stage at AMERICA’S CAR MUSEUM. Timing of this new exhibit couldn’t be better in that 2016 is the 100th Anniversary of Bayerische Motoren Werke. We Amerikanische know it better as BMW, the Bavarian Motor Works. The exhibit: BMW – Propelling a Century of Innovation will explore the origins of the German company with a focus on its world-renowned engineering excellence in both cars and motorcycles.

The list of cars and motorcycles making up the exhibit is currently being finalized. In addition to passenger vehicles, the exhibit will include racecars, an art car and a collection of historically significant artifacts.

If your spouse is currently employed, consider whether becoming a single parent will impede career advancement and earning power. If your spouse isn’t employed, consider whether he or she will start to work and what his or her earning potential will be. Next, look at what funds may be available to your family in addition to your spouse’s earnings and any savings. Then estimate what your family’s living expenses will be. Consider current housing, food, clothing, medical care, and other household and family expenses; any significant debts, such as a mortgage and student loans; and your children’s education. How do you determine the amount of insurance you need? Start by how much annual cash flow your current investments, retirement plans and any other resources will provide. Use conservative earnings, inflation, and tax rates. Life insurance can be used to cover any shortfall between cash flow generated versus what is needed for future expenses.

When you quantify the numbers to determine what cash flow your family will need, the result may be surprisingly high. Depending on your age, you may be trying to replace decades of earnings. Insurance can be the best solution for liquidity problems. Estates are often cash poor, and your estate may be composed primarily of illiquid assets such as closely held business interests, real estate or collectibles. If your heirs need cash to pay estate taxes or for their own support, these assets can be hard to sell. For that matter, you may not want these assets sold. Even if your estate is of substantial value, you may want to purchase insurance simply to avoid the unnecessary sale of assets to pay expenses or taxes. Sometimes second-to-die insurance makes the most sense for providing liquidity to pay estate taxes as this type of policy pays off when the surviving spouse dies, providing cash when it is needed the most. A second-to-die policy has a couple of key advantages over insurance on a single life. First, premiums are lower. Second, generally an uninsurable person can be covered if the other person is insurable. But, this type of policy might not fit into your plan if your goal is supporting a surviving spouse. In the next issue of OpenRoad we will examine the ownership of life insurance. Please seek professional advice before the purchase of life insurance.

Great American Road Trips

Aviation Museum Loop / McMinnvile to Tillamook By Walt Tomsic, Managing Editor, OpenRoad, AMERICA’S CAR MUSEUM Start: McMinnville, Oregon Visit: Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum Tillamook Air Museum Finish: McMinnville, Oregon Distance: 150+/- miles

M

ost car people like things that float and fly. And you don’t have to own a boat or have a pilot’s license to appreciate these other ways of getting around. If you like aircraft museums and curvy roads flanked by breathtaking scenery, do we have a day tour for you.

THE DRIVE

Start the drive in McMinnville, Oregon, home of the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. You know, the one with the “Spruce Goose”… and an SR-71 “Blackbird” tucked under it’s wing … that one. You’d have to journey east to the Smithsonian to find another collection of this size and historic provinance. Oh, and there’s also another cavernous building filled with lots of neat space stuff… and an IMAX theatre… and a water park. Back to the drive, take HWY 18 west out of McMinnville then hang a right on HWY 22. You are now about to enter 25 miles of absolute driving Xanadu… curve after curve through a verdant swath of classic Oregon forest. It will end all too soon in a place called “Hebo.” Head north (right) on the 101 to just south of Tillamook and the Tillamook Air Museum. It’s that big blimp hanger off to the right with “Air Museum” painted on it.

PHOTOS Above: Oregon State Highway 22 and 130 provide some of the best pure driving pleasure to be found in the Beaver State Above right: Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint & Wildlife Refuge Right: Oceanside is a cozy little beach town with a not so little beach Far right: The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville houses one of the nation’s biggest and best collections of aircraft and spacecraft

Don’t expect anything even close to the Evergreen. On top of that, the Museum’s WWII flying stock is now part of the Erickson Collection in Madras, Oregon. We’ll save that drive for another day. So, why bother? In one word and one letter, “Hanger B.” The former, vintage 1942, military blimp hanger is the largest clear-span wooden structure in the world. There are also some pretty cool Russian jets on display along with a fascinating assortment of memorabilia including pieces of the German dirigible Hindenburg. On the road again, turn left in Tillamook on HWY 131 (3rd St.). A right on Bayocean Rd. NW will take you to the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint, or just stay on 131 to Netarts. From there, you might want to take a short hop north to check out Oceanside and its Three Arch Rocks jutting from the sea off a beautiful expanse of beach. Oceanside is one of those little off-the-beaten-path gems. From Netarts, head south along the coast on Netarts Bay Dr. to Pacific City. You might need sat nav as the road changes names half-a-dozen times. You’ll rejoin HWY 101 just past Pacific City and head south. A left off 101 onto HWY 130 will give you one more dose of Xanadu before merging with HWY 18/22. From there it’s back to McMinnville and the end of a great little daylong road trip.

TRIP TIPS You should hit Netarts about lunchtime. The Schooner is a great place to grab a bite and a craft beer (passengers only of course). We stayed at, and can recommend, the Red Lion in McMinnville. The staff is friendly, the rooms are clean and comfortable and it’s located just down the road from the Evergreen Aviation Museum. Downtown McMinnville is quaint and very stroll-around friendly. You might want to cap the day with a rooftop dinner at the historic McMenemins Hotel Oregon.

Should your tastes lean to the more spicy side, Los Molcajetes Mexican Restaurant in McMinnville is an excellent choice. We do not request, nor do we receive, any compensation for the previously noted recommendations.

Ahhh, America... 1932 Ford Sedan Delivery

HOT ROD SHOP

a nation summarized in a Frank Sinatra song... doing things our way.

We were born in rebellion and we’ve never looked back. You can trace the gestation of our national character through the centuries as a series of nose thumbings, of “whys” and “why nots.” Why bow to a self-appointed ruling class? Why not have machines build other machines? Why charge ten bucks for something when $9.99 sounds so much cheaper. Why not build cool cars out of junk yard heaps, better known as “vintage tin.” Like singing cowboys, jazz music and cheeseburgers, hot rods are 100 percent U.S. of A. prime.

1950s: Hot Rod’s Golden Age

Like singing cowboys, jazz music and cheeseburgers, hot rods are 100 percent U.S. of A. prime.

Despite bad press and parental displeasure, the 1950s remain as classic rodding’s golden age complete with a rock’n roll sound track. Magazines focused on the scene hit the stands, organizations like the SCTA and Wally Parks’ NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) gained credence and actual purpose built drag strips began to replace stop lights and city streets. The quintessential chariot of choice was a 1932 (hence “deuce”) or ‘33 Ford roadster, stripped of all extraneous weight and powered by whatever the builders could get their hands on, preferably a flathead Ford V8 or small block Chevy.

The history of the hot rod has been fairly well documented although not always with absolute accuracy. Granted, Southern California was the petri dish and returning GIs the catalyst but the phenomenon germinated well prior to WWII. In fact, the term, “hot rod” (aka “gow job”) was in common use in the 1930s as was racing on the pancake flats of California’s dry lakebeds. The Southern California Timing Association (see Guest Editorial on page 24) held its first sanctioned event on March 15th, 1938 at Muroc Dry Lake northeast of L.A.. Of course, the young busted knuckle set was cobbling together cars well before the SCTA stepped in to impose a little much needed order on the chaos.

1960s: Detroit Muscle Steals the Show

Rodding’s early rough and tumble days created an image problem that lingered long after things had settled down. “B” movie potboilers like “Hot Rod Rumble,” “Drag Strip Riot,” and “Hot Rod Gang” didn’t help matters. Mainstream Hollywood hopped on the disaffected youth doing stupid things in cars plot line with cult classics like “Rebel Without a Cause.” Who can forget a young Jimmy Dean leaping to safety a split second before the car plunged off Millertown Bluff. Buzz wasn’t as lucky. The following statement made in 1950 by the Director of the New York State Division of Safety sums up the prevailing establishment view of the hot rodder. “He is a deliberate and premeditated lawbreaker...with an intent to speed...to operate the vehicle in a reckless manner endangering human life.”

Then, there was the OPEC oil embargo, gas shortages, government hyper-regs, econo-boxes and Corvettes with 85 mph speedometers... not exactly fun stuff for petrol-heads. But just like in all those postapocalyptic movies, small bands of survivors slowly emerge from the smoldering rubble to re-establish... whatever. The “whatever” in this case is a fun and funky simulation of 50s style rodding, fashion and music. They even have a term for it, Kustom Kulture (yes, with the “K”s) and it’s not just confined to the U.S. You’ll find rat rods, cuffed Levi’s, bowling shirts, Vin Diesel lookalikes and lots of very very red lipstick in places like Sweden, Finland and Australia. Tho by now, like the andromeda strain, the proper sub-cultural term has probably mutated one step ahead of we squares.

By the mid-60s, if you wanted a fast car you no longer had to risk lock-jaw picking through rusty scrap yard hulks for parts... just go buy a Pontiac... or a Ford... or a Plymouth. The muscle car era had arrived and that GTO/SS/GTX would not only, in all likelihood, blow the non-existent doors off your little bucket T, it would then ferry the kids to school and take you on vacation in relative comfort. Rodding itself began to splinter into a plethora of offshoots and variants... funny cars for the strip, low-riders for the Barrios, street rods for the stoplight and customs for the show circuit.

By 1931 sales of the aging Model A were plummeting. A newer, more competetive model became essential. Working around the clock, Ford designed and built the first economical V8, the legendary flathead, or “flatty.” The first of what was to become the Model B “Deuce” rolled off the line in April, 1932. The Sedan Delivery truck variant was Ford’s attempt to fill a smaller niche market targeting the commercial customer. Our subject car, a 1932 Ford Sedan Delivery dubbed “Hot Rod Shop,” was donated to the Museum by Gerald Greenfield of Lake Tapps, Washington. Built only during the last two months of 1932 and with a scant 402 of the type produced, these utilitarian three-door deuces are something of a rare bird. When you consider most saw commercial duty, thus ridden hard and put away rusty, what we have here is the vehicular equivalent of the California Condor... very rare indeed. Hot Rod Shop is actually a later conversion but one following true to Ford’s original production method. Starting with a ‘32 Tudor sedan, Ford replaced the quarter window glass with steel panels and installed a full size rear door complete with a curved bumper and drip rail. It’s a process Dan Kemppainen of Kemp’s Rod & Restoration in Hancock, Michigan scrupulously followed on original owner John Stimac’s car. If you can get your hands on a June 2009 issue of Rod & Custom you’ll find a fully illustrated article detailing the conversion. In addition to being featured

on the pages of Rod & Custom magazine, Hot Rod Shop has appeared in CarTech’s Coolest Rides / Stationwagons and was named Best Commercial entry at 2011 Goodguys Pacific NW.

MOTO TRIVIA

n The hot rod community is now divided into two dominant camps, hot rodders and street rodders. Hot rodders build their cars with a majority of old parts and follow traditional design themes. A thriving sub-culture—or “greaser lifestyle”—has grown up around these more purist minded rodders and includes numerous underground magazines, retro clothing and hair styles and the reemergence of car clubs such as the Deacons, Shifters and Dragoons each with its destinctive club logo. n In contrast, street rodders build cars (or, in many cases, have them built by highly skilled ‘celebrity’ custom craftsmen) using primarily new parts. Often derided as “trailer queens,” these hugely expensive and exquisitely crafted cars are intended more for the show ring than the street. The best of the breed often command huge figures at auction. n No one knows for certain who coined the term “hot rod.” It first surfaced in the late 1930s in Southern California. Many believe it to be a contraction of “hot roadster” while others think it refers to ‘hot’ cams and push’rod’s. The one thing every purist agrees with… the term is only correctly applied to old cars, most often a Ford Model T, A or B and preferably a roadster, aka convertible. Everything extraneous to the pursuit of lighter weight, and resulting higher speed, is then jettisoned: heaters, radios, hoods, bumpers, windshields, fenders, etc.

n In the late 1940s and early 50s, numerous abandoned WWII airbases became ideal venues for drag racing. Many of these early tracks stretched a mile in length and allowed as many as four cars to race simultaneously. n Because hot rods occupy such a unique and prominent position in American automotive history, a controversy has been growing within the ranks of the collector car community. Many object to the increasing trend toward the acquisition and irreversible modification of surviving vintage-era cars. Those holding this opinion prefer the original hot rodding concept of building cars using only salvaged and remanufactured parts taken from abandoned or junked era-correct vehicles. n To counter the general public’s association of hot rodding with juvenile delinquency, the first National Hot Rod Exhibition was held at L.A.’s National Guard Armory in 1948. The show promoted styling, innovation and safety. That same year, Robert Petersen began publishing Hot Rod Magazine. It was the first of many publications devoted to the sport. Special Thanks to Lori and Derek Barnett for letting us use their North Tacoma location for our photo shoot. What better place to photograph a classic hot rod than in an equally classic 1921 vintage building that’s housed Ball Automotive for seventy years. Owners of collector cars take notice, it’s also known as a great place to get non-ethanol gasoline.

Michael Craft, an ACM Official Provider, created these striking photographs. To see more of his work visit www.michaelcraftphotography.com Powering Hot Rod Shop is a 1953 Mercury 286 cubic inch flathead V8. The venerable Ford flathead, or “flatty,” was first introduced in 1932 and remained in production until 1953. It has been hailed as one of the ten best engines of the 20th Century.

To create the “delivery” version of the car, Ford removed the rear quarter glass and repalce it with a steel panel. The addition of a rear door completed the modification.

An inward-curved bumper allowed easy access to the cargo area without requiring the driver to reach over the bumper.

GUEST EDITORIAL By Dan Warner, President, Bonneville 200 MPH Club

The Southern California Timing Association

S A N D , S A LT & S PE E D

2017 will be a milestone year for the Southern California Timing Association… and for that matter, amateur racing in America. It will mark the association’s 80th Anniversary.

B

y the 1920s, auto racing in America had become intensely competitive and teams searched for appropriate places to test their vehicles between sanctioned events. The pleasant year-round weather of Southern California provided ample opportunities and the high desert dry lakes, located 90 miles Northeast of Los Angeles, provided the perfect venues… Rosamond, Muroc and El Mirage being among the best.

By October 1927, various individuals running these informal events sought to become organized. Beyond a few class rules, the races were far from formal in structure. Cars of the same speed range were lined up side by side. At the starting signal the line would head for the marked finish line. Those unfortunates who did not keep up often became lost in the dust cloud and veered off course. By the 1930s, spectators had become a huge issue. Crowds estimated upwards of 10,000 would attend the events. However, due to the 90-mile drive to the dry lakes, a number of enthusiasts began racing on public streets in their local neighborhoods. Police and city officials did not look kindly on this activity and heated conflicts often ensued. The Southern California Timing Association was formed in November 1937 with the goal of establishing a class system for the various types of vehicles being raced. They set rules and standards for the operation of meets and established class records. Above all, the group set forth rules to make the sport safe. Various clubs were assigned duties such as vehicle inspection, timing, starting line duty, course set up, crowd control and pre-race course inspection, known as “rock patrol.” These same duties apply today. 24 OPENROAD

The first scheduled SCTA event was held at Muroc lakebed in May of 1938. The property, owned by the Corum family—Muroc is Corum spelled backwards—later became Edwards Air Force Base and Flight Test Center. Following the start of WWII, the area was designated off limits and racing moved to El Mirage where it continues to this day. Today, the SCTA lists eleven member clubs running six events per year, May through November, exclusively at El Mirage. There is an extensive class structure and points system to determine the season champion in car and motorcycle divisions.

As the sport continued to grow it was determined that the number of vehicles and spectators were harming the lake surface to the point natural recovery was being affected. Wally Parks, an original SCTA founder, editor of Hot Rod Magazine and future founder of the National Hot Rod Association, organized a group to travel to Salt Lake City in an effort to get permission to determine the feasibility of an annual National Speed Trial on the famed Bonneville Salt Flats. The Parks group was granted a onetime permit and the SCTA organized the event. About fifty brave adventurers made the journey from around the country to attend the first Bonneville Nationals in August 1949. The success of this first trial has evolved into sixty-six years of racing on the salt flats.

Today, entrants come from around the world and campaign the 550 cars and motorcycles that make up Speed Week each August. Due to the number of entrants four parallel racetracks are required to ensure everyone gets the opportunity to shoot for a class record. Spectator count has risen to over 20,000, enough to line the five-mile course. Records are the business of the SCTA and they are impressive. The current top speed record for cars is 439 MPH set by Speed Demon, owned and driven by George Poteet with assistance from Ron Main. The motorcycle record is 332 MPH set by Sam Wheeler in his E Z Hook streamliner. Perhaps one of the most outstanding records is the Vintage Hot Rod entry driven by Dave Davidson in a 1934 Ford highboy roadster at 301 MPH while using only three miles of the five-mile course. For the past two years, the current poor condition of the salt surface has severely affected the land speed record community. Excessive out of season rain and the local salt brine mining operation has wreaked havoc on the salt. Just one event was possible in 2014 and no events were run in 2015. Even as the days wind down, the BLM has yet to grant racing dates for 2016. For those who might be interested in learning more, there is a newly released two-book set covering the first twenty years of the Southern California Timing Association at Bonneville and last year’s Bonneville— a Century of Speed, a 100 year review of racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Both are available at: www.bonnevillebookstore.com.

FUEL MOM AND DAD’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE AUTOMOBILE HERE ARE FOUR WAYS TO GIVE SOMETHING UNIQUELY SPECIAL THIS MOTHER’S DAY AND FATHER’S DAY. GIVE A GIFT OF MEMBERSHIP As an ACM member, you know what it’s like to belong to America’s most active and innovative car museum. Now you can share that experience. Give someone special a gift of membership this Mother’s Day and Father’s Day...it’s like receiving 365 presents all at once.

GiveBIG 2016 ACM will participate in a one-day, online giving event on May 3, 2016. Every gift will be increased by funds provided by The Seattle Foundation and GiveBIG sponsors. This is a great way to make your donation to ACM grow and honor a loved one for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

PUT ACM ON YOUR GIFT GIVING LIST A gift to ACM in honor of your mom, dad or grandparents is 100% tax deductible and will be directed to the area of greatest need. Whether it’s used to fund exhibits, preserve the collection or support educational programs, your gift will help keep ACM the exciting and vibrant place it is.

RENEW OR UPGRADE YOUR CURRENT MEMBERSHIP Memberships can be enjoyed by the whole family. Stay connected to all the fun, activities and perks you’ve come to enjoy as a member at ACM. Throughout the year, you will see some new events added to the mix so make sure your Museum member “Driver’s License” stays up to date.
