BEHIND THE WHEEL WHEN WE FIRST PROMOTED THE IDEA OF “AMERICA’S CAR MUSEUM” OVER A DECADE AGO, WE PROMISED TO BE SOMETHING SPECIAL, SOMETHING UNIQUE. WE SAID WE’D GO BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL NOTION OF A CAR MUSEUM. THAT ACCOMPLISHED, WE’VE NOW TAKEN THE NEXT LOGICAL STEP, THE CREATION OF AMERICA’S AUTOMOTIVE TRUST—AN INSTITUTION WHO’S SOLE MISSION IS TO SECURE AMERICA’S AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE.
SECURING AMERICA’S AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE NOW AND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
W
e created America’s Automotive Trust to enhance and extend efforts begun by LeMay—America’s Car Museum to be at the center of a movement to secure America’s automotive heritage—now and for future generations. We understood the need to break free from traditional definitions of what a “museum” should and should not be. Rather than simply housing and caring for its own resident collection, our museum would serve a higher purpose, one that would be worthy of the support of the thousands of individuals and corporations that sustain it. The creation of America’s Automotive Trust is the fulfillment of that promise. The Trust accomplishes this through three primary functions. First, is the traditional museum function of securing automotive treasures and creating a gathering place to celebrate our love affair with the automobile. ACM has, in its five short years of operation, exceeded all expectations in that regard. The momentum we’ve created thus far through our exhibits, events and activities will only continue to grow and enhance the Museum’s reach and reputation.
Second, is doing our part, to further the crucial mission of the RPM Foundation—to help young people obtain the proper training
for and access to full-time careers in automotive preservation, restoration and maintenance. If those skills are not transferred to the next generation, there simply will be no future for the collectible automobile or for those who to enjoy them. Third, we must provide the opportunity for enthusiasts to drive their cars and enjoy the camaraderie of others who share their passion. We are accomplishing this through an expanded Club Auto program in partnership with Hagerty. Club Auto, as the name indicates, provides both club facilities for social and car-centric gatherings and varied and entertaining road tours. Those of us who love cars, trucks and motorcycles and understand their importance in American culture want to ensure the vehicles we love, and their histories, are preserved. We also want to ensure the opportunity exists to drive them. This important work and the missions of the Museum and RPM can only be sustained through generous private support. As seen in this Milestones Edition, thousands are joining us in this movement to secure our automotive heritage—and future. Thank you for your continued support and please encourage others to ‘join the movement’ now.

America’s Automotive Trust STEERING COMMITTEE
Volume 13… “Volume THIRTEEN!” Are we really entering our thirteenth year of publication on OpenRoad? How can that be? America’s Car Museum celebrated its grand opening in 2012. That’s five years ago not thirteen. Indeed, the Museum proper—strictly “bricks and mortar” speaking—has been in place for soon to be five years now. The Idea, the dream to build America’s premier automotive museum, crystalized several years before the ink dried on volume 1 / Issue 1 of OpenRoad. That was in 2005. In many ways and for many years thereafter, OpenRoad was the tangible face of ACM. It helped explain and sell the dream. Those early issues of the magazine chronicled the persistent, at times perilous, journey from concept to concrete. Our pages acted as an ongoing case study in the realities of getting a project of this type and scope done. Design revisions, financial hurdles, personal and political maneuverings… at times it seemed like an exercise in juggling sea urchins. But in the end, the will to build triumphed and ACM became real.
Over the years, OpenRoad evolved. Sections were dropped and added, page layouts refined and covers redesigned. Cover photos began featuring cars in the AutoBiography section. Going forward, the masthead and interior content will reflect the implementation of America’s Automotive Trust as the umbrella organization encompassing ACM, RPM Foundation, Club Auto and Concours Club. You’ll also notice a subtle refresh on our page layouts. It’s what good art directors do from time to time. One thing that will not change is the basic mission of the magazine, to be a benefit of membership, to engage, inform and entertain you. OpenRoad has been there for the duration, covering the ups, the downs and that best “up” of all—June 2, 2012—the opening day of ACM. That openness and candor helped us win a lot of awards, among them, the best automotive museum publication in America. As members of AAT, you deserve nothing less. Now, start getting that car ready for the next full season of celebration—on the road and at ACM. Left to right: • Volume 1 / Issue 1, Spring 2005 • The cover layout is revised, Summer 2012 • Autobiography cars are featured on the cover, Fall 2012 • OpenRoad becomes a publication of America’s Automotive Trust, Summer 2016,

If ever a work of non-fiction read like pure fiction, this is it. It’s hard for someone living in the 21st Century to wrap one’s head around the Homeric effort it took to convert America’s civilian production capacity to the making of weapons of war. Without that effort, it’s quite possible I’d be writing this review in German. In addition to the riveting account of the nuts and bolts of the task, you’re given an insider look at machinations within the Ford family, principally those involving Henry and son Edsel. Well written and scrupulously researched, it’s a must read. Racers and Runways – By Terry O’Neil This odd little volume came as a bit of a surprise. Seemingly dry on the outside, the more you dig, the more fascinating it becomes. Granted, you do need to have at least some passing interest in the origins of amateur sports car racing on military airfields during the years 1952 to 1954. If that’s not too recondite for you, you’ll discover that General Curtis E. LeMay was behind using SAC airbase facilities for SCCA racing events and even arranged to scramble his planes on race days to free up runways. What’s more, he owned and campaigned an Allard. Just one of many little gems hidden inside the book. OPENROAD 9

Sustaining the Vision of America’s Automotive Trust

It is the vision of America’s Automotive Trust to secure America’s automotive heritage. The vision is of great importance to those who recognize the automobile’s role in American culture and who are passionate about the enjoyment of collectible vehicles today.
It is also a very attainable vision given proper leadership, strategic planning, a dedicated board of directors and supportive donors. These “assets” were developed when we launched the “Drive for America’s Car Museum” more than a decade ago. We built a magnificent museum and put it on the world stage.

THE CAMPAIGN INCLUDES: n Operating Funds—Annual operating support in the amount of $3,200,000 to sustain programs of and for the RPM Foundation, ACM K-12 and adult education efforts, exhibits, events and collection management and preservation. n Endowment and Capital Funds—$25,000,000 over a five-year period to provide for mission attainment and sustainability. Endowment gifts are invested, principal saved and a portion of the income earned expended in support of ACM and RPM operations. Endowment gifts may be designated in support of specific entities or programs much in the same way gifts to colleges and universities are so directed.

Success
If those of us who believe in the vision of America’s Automotive Trust commit to its support and enlist others in the effort as well, AAT will have a formidable impact on American culture. Provided with the proper fuel—AAT can expanded its structure to better communicate the seriousness of our purpose. We will be able to enjoy the efficiencies that result from collaboration. Our Board will expand and extend our network of influence. Operating pledges sufficient for several years along with a significant start on endowment building will allow for consistent and efficient day-to-day operation. Given the proper fuel, America’s Automotive Trust and its family of institutions; LeMay—America’s Car Museum, RPM Foundation, Club Auto, Concours Club—and future partners—will prosper and lead the movement to preserve and promote America’s love affair with the automobile. TDH II Sponsors:
Part of AAT’s commitment to promoting collector car culture involves getting the cars out on the road where they can be driven, seen and enjoyed. The Drive Home is an important part of that awareness raising effort. The intrepid crew of TDH II once again demonstrated that humor, ingenuity and a “keep calm and carry on” attitude will triumph over every manner of mechanical glitch. Of course it helps to have a great support team behind you. The sponsors, friends who hosted us along the way and the enthusiasts who came out to meet us played an invaluable role in making TDH II a success. Our thanks go out each and every one of them.

eplacing those lost hours
Providing Services & Programs Over the last twenty-five years, high school graduates taking shop classes log about 1,800 fewer hours of under-the-hood time than their counterparts in prior decades. It’s no wonder the gap between restoration industry expectations and talent readiness is widening. Today, some students entering their first year studying automotive restoration technology have not even changed a tire. The RPM Foundation is working to replace those lost hours with services and programs designed to address the need for real-world, hands-on work experience.
Services Provided by RPM: n Guiding students to get work experience by shadowing in local shops n Editing student resumes and letters of introduction n Teaching the importance of documenting personal work experience with a professional portfolio n Helping students understand the need for effective communication and follow-up n Coaching proper interviewing techniques with prospective employers n RPM also encourages shop owners to understand that just like detailing cars, written communications are “detailing with words.” Job descriptions with clearly expressed skills required of applicants make for good business and result in good hires. A volunteer corps is being cultivated to support this program and these services.
cards. Students get to meet shop workers, learn more about the work environment, job expectations and the basic skills required. The trial phase of Shop Hop spanned three weekends and involved forty students from five local and two out-of-state schools, including McPherson College. Following day one, six students were hired for short-term, school year and summer internships. Additional Shop Hops are scheduled for 2017. With Shop Hop, RPM is developing a winning formula for replacing those lost shop class hours! The mission of the RPM Foundation involves three key institutional objectives, or “pillars.” Having used this opportunity to focus on services and programs, the summer and fall issues of OpenRoad will concentrate on sharing resources and awarding grants.
Sharing Resources The RPM Foundation travels the country looking for the next generation of craftsmen and artisans. In the past two years alone, we traveled over 147,000 miles in our quest to observe and collect data. The result, an extensive database of schools and shops, allowing us to expand our network, collect additional data and generate reports. As a thought leader in this niche marketplace, RPM shares its collected knowledge, information, ideas, programs and contacts with schools, students and parents, administrators, advisory committees, the media and collectors.
Awarding Grants Since its founding in 2005, the RPM Foundation has awarded nearly $3 million in grants. The scholarships, internships, apprenticeships and support given to educational institutions has benefitted more than 25,000 people in twenty-nine states and three Canadian provinces. The support we give provides training for full-time careers in the fields of restoration and preservation. RPM has three grant cycles each year, the next deadline for grant applications is March 24, 2017. For info visit, rpm.foundation/apply-for-grant.
SHOP HOP One example of RPM’s commitment to providing services and programs is called Shop Hop, a pilot program being tested in Chicago. The program brings together current automotive high school and post-secondary students with “mentorship mindset” shop owners at their place of business. Shop Hop serves a dual purpose by exposing students to their local marketplace while allowing shop owners the opportunity to meet future craftsmen. Shops being visited provide company profiles, job descriptions and business cards while students come prepared with resumes, portfolios and calling OPENROAD 14

As a standalone entity of AAT, Club Auto is more than just a membership level. It’s an actual “club” with it’s own unique and exclusive space within the Museum and at a growing number of affiliate sites across the U.S. Club Auto facilities are perfect for all manner of group and private social occasions or just as a comfortable place to relax, converse with friends, maybe watch a race or car auction on the big screen TV. Some affiliates even offer the option for private collector car storage. A membership in Club Auto opens the door to all this and more. It’s one thing to enjoy a great drive in a nice car. It’s quite another to enjoy that road adventure in the company of like-minded and fun people. Club Auto members love getting out on the road. Tech sessions, seminars and private collection visits are also part of the mix.
Club Auto has strong provenance. As an entity of America’s Automotive Trust and powered by Hagerty, Club Auto lives at the very heart of car culture. oncours Club plays an important role in fulfilling the vision of America’s Automotive Trust, and, like ACM, RPM and Club Auto, is a standalone entity of the Trust. Comprised of individuals whose philanthropic support acts as a sustaining force within AAT, Concours Club members turn their passion into action. They not only contribute generously on a personal level, they actively encourage others of means and influence to join the movement to secure America’s automotive heritage. In that way, they act as ambassadors for everyone involved in the collector car hobby and automotive culture at large.
But membership in Concours Club isn’t without its lighter side. People with a common passion and purpose naturally develop strong associations and friendships. The social events, Club activities, trips and road tours that come with membership help forge that bond. Alongside the more serious purpose served by the Club, there is ample opportunity for adventure, shared laughter, fun… and a toast or two. Cars, food, wine… choose all three!
Exclusive Concours Club Tours The Annual Wine and Wheels Tour sends us down scenic regional back roads on the way to dining and wine tasting experiences that will never be forgotten. This year’s trip details are still being finalized. Visit concoursclub.org for the latest updates. Concours Club European tours combine the finest food, wine and driving to be found on the continent. Trips are often planned to coincide with storied events such as the Mille Miglia, Goodwood or Villa d’Este. Other times, perhaps just days spent driving through the French countryside. This year’s European tour visits the finest Italy has to offer. Participants will enjoy luxurious 5-star accommodations, dining on fabulous food and opportunities for exclusive events. Join us as we explore Rome, Tuscany (with an exclusive dinner at Nicola Bulgari’s private estate in Sarteano), Florence, Milan, Villa d ’Este on Lake Como and, not to be over looked, simply the most beautiful scenery Italy has to offer. If these types of experiences sound appealing, Concours Club may just be your cup of tea… or glass of wine. his immaculate 1957 Ford Thunderbird came to ACM as a gift from Ellen, Sandy and Andrew Blaser in honor of their parents, Paul and Shiffy Blaser.
Leased new in Denver by actress Phyllis Kirk, the car was then shipped to her Beverly Hills residence. In an amazing coincidence, Kirk lived across the street from Ellen’s childhood home. In 1958, Ellen’s father purchased the car from a dealer in Santa Monica and presented it to Ellen as a high school graduation gift. The T-bird

Home II was no exception. The mid-winter trip to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit anticipated harsh
Nor’Easter weather, but instead was met with numerous mechanical maladies with all three of its vintage cars. The breakdowns tested the perseverance of The Drive Home crew, bringing us closer together and giving us a satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment that many find elusive in their day-to-day lives. Such is the allure of vintage motoring. Despite the possibility of hardships, resolution can be rewarding. The fellowship of the road is on full display. Strangers extend kindness and new friendships form. The Drive Home crew, now returned to the comfort of their warm homes, can look back with humor at their roadside disasters and the tall tales they’ll inspire. In hindsight, I doubt any of the drivers would change a minute of their adventure on The Drive Home II. Okay… so it wasn’t exactly the twelve labors of Hercules, but then again, it did take twelve days. Take this tongue-in-cheek ride along with TDH II as we re-trace the “trail of breakdowns.” Editor’s note: William Hall’s day-by-day account of The Drive II can be found on the Museum’s Motor Mouth blog, americascarmuseum.org/blog.

1969 De Tomaso Mangusta
I love these names. They fairly flow from the tongue; Monteverdi, Maserati, Iso Grifo, Bizzarrini, Ferrari, Lamborghini and… De Tomaso Mangusta. In my view, the fraternity of 60s and 70s Italian exotics and supercars has never been matched, let alone superseded. I’d venture to say—back in the day—their poster images rivaled

those of Farah Fawcett in teenage boy’s bedrooms. The fact that fifty years on they still snap heads and palpitate hearts is nothing short of incredible. In an age when car design seems to possess a shelf life measured in weeks, months if you’re lucky, vintage Italian supercars seem suspended in time… outside time… “ageless!”
T
his stunning-in-silver Mangusta represents something of a contradiction in regard to its perceived Italian bloodline. The car actually holds quadruple citizenship papers. Alejandro de Tomaso, the car’s maker, was Argentinian. The designer and builder were Italian, the engine American and the transmission German. True to its mixed lineage, De Tomaso’s creation sported a number of unconventional approaches. The chassis utilizes a steel backbone. The engine sits beneath a twin-paneled gullwing cowl. And perhaps most unconventional, the front to rear weight distribution is 32/68. That last bit no doubt contributes to the Mangusta’s reputation for “interesting” performance and handling dynamics. Where the drivetrain is concerned, especially the engine, De Tomaso pulled a one-eighty bordering on heresy in the eyes of his Italian competitors. You will not find twin cams sitting over 12 cylinders in a Mangusta. What you will
find is a pushrod iron block V8 straight out of Dearborn, Michigan… initially, Ford’s 289 followed by the 302, not that these engines were, and are, considered pedestrian. Mr. Shelby certainly proved otherwise. Both V8s were paired with the same ZF 5-speed found in the Ford GT40. Most published performance figures hover around 0-60 in 5 to 6 seconds with a top speed of about 155 mph.
IF THE ENGINEERING ON THE MANGUSTA IS A BIT OFF THE PATH, THE CAR’S DESIGN FLOATS IT ABOVE THE PATH… IT IS, IN A WORD, GORGEOUS!
If the engineering on the Mangusta is a bit off the path, the car’s design floats it above the path… it is, in a word, gorgeous! Whereas de Tomaso’s first effort, the Vallelunga, never quite gelled into a cohesive and convincing whole, the Mangusta seems milled from a single block of matter. There isn’t a bad line, proportion or form to be found. The car is, for a vintage Italian supercar, restrained without being yawn inducing, ‘futuristic’ without being gimmicky. The stance is purposeful and planted. The man responsible was Giorgetto Giugiaro working at the time at Ghia.

Giorgetto Giugiaro Named Car Designer of the Century in 1999, Giugiaro’s resume is nothing short of astounding. Both Bertone and Ghia benefited handsomely from his work before he founded his own firm, Italdesign. Space does not allow a complete list of the cars that issued from his drawing board. But that list, in addition to the Mangusta, would include the DeLorean DMC 12, BMW M1, Lotus Esprit, numerous Ferraris and Alfa Romeos, Maserati Ghibli, Volkswagen Golf and Scirocco. In addition to automobiles, “GG” has designed Nikon camera bodies, Necchi sewing machines, Beretta firearms, Seiko watches, Ducati motorcycles and his own pasta, the “Marille.” I once had the opportunity to meet and spend a few moments chatting with Giugiaro. It was in the early 80s at an International Design Conference in Aspen, Colorado. The conference was titled “The Italian Idea” and he was one of the principal presenters. I encountered him sitting alone in the lobby of the Hotel Jerome. Fully expecting a cursory brush off, I introduced myself and mumbled something about loving his work and that I drove a car he designed. “Ah, which one?” he asked. “I have a VW Golf, we of course call it the Rabbit.” I said, somewhat sheepishly. “Some of my best work” he replied. He offered me a seat and started asking me questions, where was I from… what did I do. When he learned I was a design professor he wanted to know, very specifically, what I found appealing in his work. It was disarming. You just don’t expect ‘famous’ people to deflect the conversation away from themselves. Before excusing myself, I was able to ask him a question. With which of his car designs, in terms of their final production execution, was he most satisfied? He mentioned half dozen or so, among them my Rabbit and the De Tomaso Mangusta.

MOTO TRIVIA
Rumor has it the name “Mangusta” was chosen when talks with Carroll Shelby to co-develop a racing car replacement for the Cobra broke down. After all, the mongoose
is a notorious snake killer. The two remained friends despite the split and there is evidence to suggest some of the early Mangusta’s Ford 289 engines were sourced from Shelby. Of the 401 Mangusta’s produced, 150 remained in Europe. 251 were sent to North America. It’s estimated about half survive today. As with most things, rarity breeds value and Mangusta values are on the rise. Due to the small number imported, Mangustas destined for North America initially escaped federal safety regulations. They came to these shores sans seatbelts and with headlights set below the legal standard. When the exemptions expired in 1970, the final run of about fifty cars were produced with pop-up headlights. The earlier cars, of which this is an example, are generally considered more attractive.
In an odd twist, GM vice president Bill Mitchell had one Mangusta delivered with a 5.4 litre, 350 hp Chevrolet engine installed. Not wishing to create an in-house rival for the Corvette, GM declined to pursue the project further. De Tomaso never intended Mangustas to be campaigned on a racetrack. Some privateers did modify a few cars for motorsport events but results were never promising. A Mangusta was entered in the GTO class of the 1973 12 Hours of Sebring but failed to make the starting grid. The Mangusta was replaced by the De Tomaso Pantera in 1971. The Pantera would go on to be De Tomaso’s most popular and plentiful production car with over 7,000 units built over the twentyyear production run. Though never achieving the film star status of rivals such as the Ferrari Daytona, the Mangusta has appeared in several films including Kill Bill and a Kylie Minogue Gone in 60 Seconds music video.
Michael Craft, an ACM Official Provider, created these striking photographs. To see more of his work visit www.michaelcraftphotography.com
One Mangusta was fitted with a Chevrolet V8 built specially for GM VP Bill Mitchell.
Both the 289 and 302 V8s were paired with the same ZF 5-speed found in the Ford GT40.
The location of the engine at the rear of the car created a 38F/62R weight distribution.
ON EXHIBIT Speed, Sunshine

omething familiar—but worth a second or third look—something refreshed and something “exotic” on the horizon… It’s what we have in store for you in this edition of “On Exhibit.”
ACM has displayed many forms of transportation from cars and trucks to motorcycles. Last fall we added an absolutely magnificent and extremely rare 1878 Silsby “General Putnam” fire horse-drawn wagon as the highlight of a Firefighter exhibit in the main lobby. The exhibit closes in September. “Tools of the Trade – Powering the Working Class” tells the story of the steadfast work vehicles that were the backbone of America in the first half of the 20th century. Rough, rugged and singular, these purpose built utilitarian trucks and specialty vehicles went about their business eschewing any semblance of creature comfort. Vehicles in the exhibit include a gargantuan, beautifully restored, 1920 Packard 3-Ton Grocer’s Truck that is so large the Collections team had to take it down to the axles to fit it in the Museum. Juxtaposed to the commanding Packard is an excellent 1931 Fageol Brothers Twin Coach Company manufactured Helms Bakery Truck that is so authentic you’ll imagine the faint smell of fresh baked pastries when standing next to it. The Tools of the Trade Exhibit is open until the fall so make sure you don’t miss it! Our “Route 66: Dream of the Mother Road” exhibit will undergo another annual ‘refresh,’ opening on April 21 during Drive the Blues Away. We began in 2015 with a focus on vintage station wagons. Hot rods took center stage in 2016. This year sees convertibles in the spotlight. The fact that the Route 66 exhibit is such an enduring visitor favorite lends testament to the place that storied stretch of road occupies in American lore and legend. Stop by and say “Hi” to Tod and Buz… you might even see a Corvette similar to the one they drove in the hit TV series. Coming on board in May, the “Exotics@ACM - Seductive Supercars” exhibit promises a fifty-year snapshot of spectacular cars including a Hypercar or two. The exact design and composition of the exhibit is nearing completion and the first car selected for inclusion is the brilliant 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta featured in this issue’s AutoBiography. You’ve seen these exotics grace the pages of every enthusiast magazine, now is your chance to see them for real. Mark your calendar for the exclusive member preview for Bronze level members and above, Friday, May 5. Scot M. Keller, Curator of Exhibitry 26 OPENROAD

EDUCATION
Where learning is more like recess...fun!
By: Debbie Kray, ACM Education Manager
E
fun!
ducation programs at America’s Car Museum are moving at full STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). We have expanded our monthly Family STEM Day to Family STEAM Day. In February, we hosted the second Full STEAM Ahead educator training session
in collaboration with four other local museums. Plus, we signed on as a charter member of the Tacoma STEAM Network. The network is working to create access, interest and success for all Tacoma students. These programs embody ACM’s commitment to serve as a hub for creative, innovative learning in our community, region and beyond. Why STEAM instead of STEM you might ask? Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) have been an important educational focus for 21st century learning, the purpose of which is to address the growing need for a skilled work force. The U.S. Department of Education reports the number of STEM intensive jobs in the United States will grow by 14% from 2010 to 2020. Yet many of these jobs remain unfilled due to the low number of students graduating with these skills. By adding the “A” (Arts), we have the opportunity to keep students interested in their schooling, learning broadly and developing lifelong career readiness. Through ACM’s lens, focused as it is, on the world of the automobile, there is a wealth of opportunities for those with STEM degrees. However, work related to design, preservation, restoration and promotion of the automobile demand the expansive STEAM skills all workers need to communicate, problem solve, tinker and create. By adding the Arts, we have the opportunity to expand students’ interests and the ability to see the practical and creative applications inherent in STEAM careers. By utilizing hands-on, inquiry based learning strategies across a variety of topics at ACM, we are able to spark interest in each student’s personal learning journey. Just as the automotive industry continues to innovate, we are poised to encourage innovative thinking through hands-on learning and challenge students to think critically, creatively and to apply the resulting content knowledge in meaningful ways. Not every student will become a scientist, engineer or designer, but we encourage them to grow up knowing how to think like one. With STEAM, we can make sure that students are ready for a variety of challenges and have the necessary skills and knowledge to create solutions for their—and our—future success. OPENROAD 27
