The Best of Israel Connect with your Jewish Roots Day 1 and 2 - Canada to the Holy Land Your journey begins as you depart Canada on an overnight flight. You will be welcomed to Israel by our airport representative. Your tour will begin with the reciting the traditional “Shechiyanu” and “Borei Pri Hagefen” blessing, as you overlook the Old City of Jerusalem. Jewish visitors have continued this tradition in Jerusalem for centuries. Continue on to your hotel and enjoy dinner before retiring for the night. Day 3 - Jerusalem - the Old City After breakfast at the hotel, enter the Old City to see the Southern Wall excavations and the Western Wall. Explore the Western Wall Tunnels descending through the many layers of Jerusalem’s past. Inside, a model shows the different dwelling periods and history of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Stand on the site believed to be the nearest spot to the "Holy of Holies." Walk to the Jewish Quarter, reconstructed in 1967 after the city was unified following the Six-Day War. Visit the City of David to see the newest excavations from the time of the first Temple period. Walk through Hezekiah’s Tunnel, still flowing with water. Dinner is in the hills of Judea at the "Land of Genesis." After your camel ride, "Abraham" and his family will host you for a Biblical-style dinner in their tent. Overnight in Jerusalem. Day 4 - Yad Vashem & Har Herzl After breakfast, drive around the new city of Jerusalem to see the modern capital of Israel. Visit Yad Vashem, the first and most famous memorial to mankind’s darkest period. Visit the very moving exhibit at the Children’s Pavilion and the Herzl Vision Museum. Here take an interactive tour though the life and times of Zionism’s founder. Visit Har Herzl, Israel’s national cemetery, and visit the gravesites of Israel’s greatest leaders and heroes including Theodore Herzl, Ze’ev Jabotinski, and Yitzchak Rabin. At the Israel Museum, see the Shrine of the Book and scale model of Jerusalem. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem. Day 5 - Ammunition Hill, Machane Yehuda & Kotel After breakfast, visit Ammunition Hill, site of one of the most crucial battles of the Six-Day War. Enjoy a walking tour of the open-air market of Machane Yehuda and see how Jews in Jerusalem prepare for Shabbat. Go to the Kotel (Western Wall) for Friday night services. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 6 - Ein Gedi, Masada & the Dead Sea (or Shabbat Observance) For those who are not keeping Shabbat: After an early breakfast, take an optional tour to the Dead Sea area. Travel south through the Judean Wilderness to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. Cover yourself with mud and enjoy the unsinkable therapeutic waters of this mineral rich sea. Next stop is the beautiful Ein Gedi reserve. See the waterfalls at this oasis in the desert, mentioned several times in the Book of Psalms as the place where King David hid from King Saul. Ein Gedi’s abundance of water and tropical climate provides wonderfully exotic plant and animal life. Continue south to the legendary mountaintop plateau of Masada. Ascend by cable car to the ancient synagogue and explore the fortress originally built by Herod and the last stronghold of the Jewish Zealots in their struggle against the Romans. From the top of Masada, outlines of the Roman encampments are still visible below. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem. Day 7 - Beit Alfa, Beit She’an, Tiberias & Safed After breakfast, travel north to the Bet She’an Valley and visit the synagogue of Beit Alfa, founded at the end of the fifth century AD. Continue to Beit She’an, one of Israel’s oldest cities with modern and millennia-old buildings mingled together. Driving north, pass through Tiberias (one of the Four Holy Cities) and see the Sea of Galilee. You’ll also visit the mystical city of Safed (another one of the Four Holy Cities, along with Jerusalem and Hebron). Stroll through the winding alleyways, visit some of the beautiful synagogues, or browse the galleries and workshops found in the artists quarter of Safed. Dinner & overnight at a Kibbutz. Day 8: Golan Heights, Katzrin & Jordan River Kayak Adventure After a kibbutz-style breakfast, embark on a day of adventure with an exciting jeep tour of the Golan Heights. As you experience the beauty and scope of these sweeping vistas, you’ll also understand their history and strategic importance. Afterwards, visit OZ 77 and see a dramatic film about the 1973 Yom Kippur War. This was the site of the main Syrian attack where just a few Israeli tanks held off the massive armored assault against the Israel Defence Force. At this important memorial on the Golan Heights, pay tribute to those who fell defending the Jewish state. Visit the Talmudic Village of Katzrin, a reconstructed village that has been brought to life in the actual location of a village from Talmudic times. See an authentic ancient olive oil press and wander through the museum; the reconstructed kitchen, pantry, living room, bedroom and courtyard are all complete with objects of daily life. Conclude the day with an exciting “wet and wild” kayak adventure down the Jordan River. Dinner and overnight at a Kibbutz.
Day 9: Acco, Mt. Carmel, Zichron Ya’akov, Aaronson House Travel to the ancient crusader port city of Acco, the fascinating UNESCO town with new excavations. Explore the Crusader Halls, underground tunnels and pathways. In Haifa, ascend Mt. Carmel for a panoramic view of Haifa Bay and the beautiful Bahai Gardens with their impressive temples. Continue on to Zichron Ya’akov, known for its wine and tranquility. The moshava’s founding farmers cultivated vineyards, and the large winery built here in 1889 became the area’s most important industry. At the Carmel Wine and Culture Center, learn how the old and new are linked in the professional wine production process in Israel. Visit Aaronson House to learn more about this fascinating chapter when a sister and brother ran a spy ring for the British against the Turks. Dinner and overnight in Tel Aviv. Day 10 - Palmach Museum, Neve Tzedek & Jaffa After breakfast, go to the new and magnificent Palmach Museum with its multi-media presentation of the history of the Palmach from 1941 to the War of Independence and the establishment of the State of Israel. Follow the lives of the young men and women who founded Israel’s Defense Forces. Visit Independence Hall for an audio presentation of David Ben Gurion’s moving Declaration of Independence speech that established the State of Israel. Enjoy a walking tour of Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv’s new hip neighborhood where the intellectual elite lived during Israel’s early days. Stroll through the funky shops and cafes along Sheinken Street, the “Greenwich Village of Tel Aviv.” Shop for unique craft items in Nachalat Binyamin’s colorful, open-air market and see modern Tel Aviv in action. End the day with a visit to the old port city of Jaffa to see a beautiful panoramic view of Tel Aviv and get a sense of this first Jewish city of the modern era, established in 1909. Enjoy a farewell dinner in a restaurant in Jaffa and transfer to Ben Gurion Airport for your flight back home. Day 11 - Arrive in the Canada
