Business Communications Seminars Business Writing Skills For the first time in history, writing has become the most common form of communication in the workplace. Unfortunately, the growing volume of written communication has resulted in an increased error rate, the need to prepare multiple pieces of writing when one would suffice and readers who are offended and frustrated by the tone of the writing. This class will help participants understand the keys to successful written communication and put those skills to the test. The principles on which effective written communication are built will be explored along with techniques to enhance conciseness and clarity. Required seminar for the Certificate in Business Communications. Course Information Facilitator: donalee Moulton, BA Fee: $765 2 Day Seminar: September 25-26, 2018; February 4-5, 2019; May 8-9, 2019

This course will look at the different types of editing, the elements of successful editing and tips for honing your rewriting and editing skills. The course will also look at how to distinguish between changes that have an impact and those that are simply fussing with words on the page. Business Communications Seminars Techniques and Strategic Communications for Government Professionals Issues wane. Or they explode. They can fade from front page coverage or they can dominate the news. The difference between issues that are resolved successfully and those that escalate is how well they are managed — and communicated. This course delves into how issues are communicated and managed within government at all levels and how employees can contribute no matter what role they play in the process: subject matter expert, communications team, administrative support. This course will look at why and how issues transform into crises and the communications tools — briefing notes, Q&A’s, backgrounders — governments use to manage an issue effectively. This hands-on program starts with the foundation of government communication, key message development, and builds from there. Elective Seminar for the Certificate in Business Communications. Series for Excellence in Written Communication Writing is no longer limited to a few channels nor do the same rules apply to all channels. Understanding how to approach writing differently is half the challenge. That’s the case for content and how you expect the reader will respond. The Series for Excellence in Written Communication is intended to address those challenges and provide you strategies to navigate them all, whether it is in a digital world or on a complex topic. Seminars can be taken individually or complete all five to receive your certificate of completion for the Series for Excellence in Written Communication. Facilitator for all seminars: donalee Moulton, BA

Writing Skills for Plain language Using plain language means writing for your audience — so that you achieve your purpose. It’s about using words and phrases and diagrams and images to make your content — and intent — easily understood by your readers. Plain language is also about organizing your content in a logical way so that ideas and information flow smoothly from start to finish. Plain language is about ensuring, as much as possible, that people know what they have to do or where they have to go or why something is important. It’s about removing confusion and avoiding misinterpretation. Course Information Fee: $765 + HST 2 Day Seminar: November 26-27, 2018; April 23-24, 2019

Writing Skills for Challenging Communications Writing good news can be tough but writing to address negative, controversial and other challenging situations is significantly tougher. This one-day workshop will look at tips and techniques for preparing written communication for challenging situations. You will come to understand when a direct answer is ineffective — and when it works well. The format for writing bad news will be discussed and the pros and cons of the “sandwich” concept will be explored. Course Information Fee: $420 + HST 1 Day Seminar: December 12, 2018; April 17, 2019

Writing Reports that Deliver NEW Well-planned and well-written reports get better results — because they provide better information. But it’s not just the content that makes a good report, it’s as much the organization and the language.

Managing Conflict Seminars Foundations of Conflict Resolution

Negotiation and Dispute Resolution

Conflict is like air. It is all around us and unavoidable. It occurs in organizations, workplaces and relationships. Conflict situations are challenging to deal with but they don’t have to be confrontational or destructive. Individuals are often unsure how to approach situations in order to do both: resolve the situation effectively and keep the relationship intact.

An ongoing challenge, at work and in our personal lives, involves the resolution of disputes. Despite the importance of resolving conflict in a fair manner, many managers have little training in the process. This seminar examines resolving disputes using interests, rights and power-based approaches and the advantages and disadvantages of such approaches.

This course will provide participants with a practical and powerful approach to dealing with conflicts effectively. You will leave with: knowledge, skills, techniques and an introduction to a world renowned process, Interest Based Negotiation (IBN), to deal with any situation. We begin the journey to creating a better and more respectful existence. Resolution starts here! Required seminar for the Certificate in Managing Conflict. Course Information Facilitator: Michael E. Petitpas, BEd, CRCert Fee: $875 2 Day Seminar: October 1-2, 2018; February 25-26, 2019

Managing and Resolving Conflict in the Workplace The common issue most employees struggle with in their workplace is poor communication. Whether with work colleagues, reports or managers, the issues stem from no communication to miscommunication. With the advent of digital and social media communication channels dominating our workplaces, conflict arising from communication issues cannot be ignored. This seminar will examine some of the key communication and conflict management skills necessary to more effectively reduce and resolve conflict in the workplace. There will be a specific focus on electronic communication and how it impacts organizational conflict management.

Following a hands-on approach, you will have the opportunity to negotiate, mediate and litigate. Participants will be exposed to both traditional and interest-based styles of negotiation with exercises designed to provide an effective opportunity to apply the concepts and techniques learned in class. Elective seminar for the Certificate in Managing Conflict. Course Information Facilitator: Terry Wagar, LLB PhD Fee: $875 2 Day Seminar: October 30-31, 2018; March 20-21, 2019

Third Party Neutral Bringing parties in conflict together for the purpose of reaching mutually agreeable solutions can be challenging and uncomfortable. However, doing so effectively can result in a healthier work environment. Resolving conflicts early also reduces stress, anxiety, absenteeism and costs associated with more adversarial processes. This workshop builds on the basic skills and techniques acquired in the Foundations course. Participants will learn to assess whether or not mediation or facilitation would be appropriate and who would be the best person to convene the conversation. If you are that person, this course prepares you to assist and guide the parties through a process to create mutual understanding, resolve issues and keep the relationship in tact! Your involvement will help turn confrontation into collaboration. Everyone wins!

Managing Human Resources Seminars Emerging Trends in Human Resources NEW

Talent Selection, Development and Retention

The workplace of our parents’ generation is hard to find in the 21st Century. As the workforce changes, the workplace must respond to the new and various requirements of its people. Value systems and beliefs about what makes up a “good” workplace dictate how things are done. These values and beliefs must be challenged and replaced if they are not producing the kind of workplace that encourages high performance and long-term employment opportunities.

Talent management for any organization is a continuous process. This program will illustrate how each step of the process is equally important. A comprehensive recruiting process can eliminate the gut reactions that frequently result in a wrong hire. On-going performance management, coaching and development have been proven to have a larger impact on retention than annual salary increases. In addition, we will explore best practices in creating healthy and sustainable workplaces.

Innovative organizations are identifying ways to create the environment that is most conducive to building a high level of engagement. This two-day workshop will explore those best practices and critically assess whether they will work for us.

Having the right people in the right roles and providing the right kind of environment are the keys to achieving organizational success. Participants will leave with tools and templates that will enable them to immediately put learning into practice.

Team Building and Group Dynamics Seminars Facilitating Fundamentals for Group Discussions NEW The workplace has become much more team driven with the definition of a team expanding to include non-traditional participants. The demand for group effectiveness is crucial. Using effective facilitation skills can dramatically improve a group’s effectiveness. Those skills can be learned. Egos, competing personal goals and/or interests combined with different perspectives and experiences can often derail group activities or create a less than satisfactory outcome. A team leader using proper facilitation can more effectively get a group of people to identify, accept and commit to solutions that will enhance the productivity of the group and/or the organization to which they belong. Leveraging Team Dynamics Teams consist of people. Members of effective teams often have different backgrounds, personalities, perspectives and experiences. To maximize a team’s effectiveness, we need to integrate the diversity individual members bring to the team. If we are successful the outcome is one with excellent results. We’ll explore the dynamics of team diversity, including the motivation behind behaviours using various behavioural models, differing personalities, the role that perception plays in misunderstanding and how to manage different or contrary expectations. We’ll look at assessing and managing our own behaviour, becoming more aware of others and building positive relationships, reducing or eliminating resistance and getting commitment to achieving common tasks. Successful Team Leadership Most workplaces operate within a team environment and depend on the strength and success of that team to achieve outcomes. This two-day course focuses on the workplace team and its value. As a foundation, it is important to examine the ways in which teams are created, developed and managed. Much can be learned from identifying the strengths of a fully functional team and the pitfalls of a dysfunctional one. Central to the success of any team is the ability of team members to communicate clearly with each other. This works best when established within the framework for the team and reinforced by team leadership. Once functioning, determining the impact of the team requires measurement and evaluation. Participants will take part in interactive exercises which will lead to a better understanding of how to create or re-design and lead a strong and successful team. Certificate in Engaging Stakeholders and Leading Change In today’s world change is the routine. Half of everything you know about doing your job will be obsolete in 3-4 years — the trouble is nobody knows which half. To lead successfully in this fast-changing and complex world, you have to be able to engage multiple stakeholders and tap their strengths to create win-win-win solutions, get buy-in and commitment to ongoing change, and break away from ‘the way it’s always been done’ to create solutions that will work not only today, but tomorrow. On top of this, we are moving into the greatest labour crisis in history as the baby boomers retire en masse and younger workers have different demands and expectations. They have zero tolerance for autocrats and bureaucrats — they want coaches and mentors, not bosses — and they want to be engaged in developing the strategies they implement. This certificate program provides you with the foundational skills you need to navigate complexity and lead co-creatively.

Certificate Requirements The certificate must be completed within a two-year period. Participants must complete all three required seminars and the Applied Study Project assigned in the Making Change Work seminar.

Engaging Stakeholders and Leading Change Seminars Aligning Team and Organization: The Personal Approach When are people most productive? When you’re getting them to do what you want, or when you’re getting them to do what they want? In the organizational world we talk a lot about leadership for “employee engagement,” but what are we really talking about? This highly experiential course will give you the skills you need to engage people at the deeper level of their personal attitude. You will learn to apply the 7 slogans of effective team leadership, and the 3 questions that tell you to how to align organizational needs with the personal needs of your people. You will also learn personal leadership practices that help you bring your own most clear and productive attitude to your leadership challenges, no matter what crisis of the moment presents.

Making Change Work During this three-day program you will learn what the biggest mistakes are in designing and implementing effective innovation, and how to avoid them. You’ll learn the secrets to making change work for the complex challenges you face today — a structured process for addressing not only the change you want, but also the real roots of resistance to change from all parties. In addition to traditional change tools, you will learn tools and techniques you won’t see anywhere else. They will uncover the root causes of resistance and ensure the changes you design will work for bottom-line results in the long run.

Engaging Stakeholders In today’s complex world you need to engage many other stakeholders in your change initiative and get their ‘buy-in’ and commitment to moving forward. Often you need to engage them in co-creating the way forward, aligning many different agendas and needs. As the old adage says, people don’t resist change. They resist being changed. One of the greatest reasons that most change projects fail is forcing change on others rather than investing the time to engage them and build their buy-in and commitment. Most people say they don’t have the time to do this, but they always seem to have time to deal with the mess that happens afterwards when they don’t. This program will show step-by-step how to engage and involve your stakeholders — employees, shareholders, suppliers, customers, members of your community and more. Certificate in Policy Development and Implementation Policy is the link between organizational intent and behaviour. It is reflected in what organizations do, and in what they do not do. When it is clearly articulated, communicated, implemented and managed, policy provides focus and consistency. It clarifies intent and enables organizations to manage expectations; it enables leaders to empower and provide guidance to their people. It enables them to monitor, oversee and manage for results. More and more organizations are opting to use documented policy statements and manuals as the primary means of providing that focus and consistency. However, many organizations struggle with what policy is, with when and how it is most effectively developed and applied and with how to articulate it in ways that are relevant, appropriately comprehensive, and understandable. Too often they misstep and the results are policies that aren’t really policies; policies that have no impact or unintended impacts; and policies that aren’t implementable or enforceable. Learn the elements in properly evaluating your policy’s effectiveness. The Certificate in Policy Development and Implementation has been designed for practitioners of all experiences taking one from the initial stages of policy development to the final stages of documenting it. Participants will be introduced to strategies by experienced policy practitioners to enable them to lead, manage, support and influence the policy process.

Policy Development and Implementation Seminars Developing Policy that Performs

Writing Effective Policy and Procedures

Effective policy begins with the decision that an organization requires direction on how to manage an issue. It is developed through a process of due diligence through which leaders are informed by relevant information and analysis. This leads to the selection and implementation of the management option that reflects the best opportunity to manage the issue in a way that will produce the best results for the organization and its clients. Participants will develop a prioritized policy agenda and development plan.

Policies guide an organization’s decision-making and bring a consistency to those decisions. They also provide much needed direction for employees, customers and others. That presumes, of course, that users can decipher the policy language. Often legalistic, dense and elevated, the language of policy can stand in the way of compliance and support.

Required Seminar for the Certificate in Policy Development and Implementation. Course Information Facilitator: Rose Landry, BA, MPA Fee: $765 2 Day Seminar: November 7-8, 2018; March 13-14, 2019

Implementing Policy and Managing the Change Policy implementation is the process through which organizations provide people with the awareness, knowledge, tools and skills they will need to work with new or changed policies. Good communications are essential to both. In this seminar you will learn how to ensure that new and amended policies will be implemented consistently and confidently.

This seminar will cover the full scope of evaluation in policy work. Policy options must be evaluated to assess their relative value. The policy implementation process must be evaluated to ensure it has been comprehensive and complete. Policies must be evaluated to ensure they have been and will continue to be effective.
