This project aimed to examine the effect of contraction and expansion, effects which take place in several sequences through the layering, offsetting and juxtaposition of horizontal and vertical planes throughout each construct. These planes contract space in thresholds and in turn these thresholds lead to the expansion of space in voids.
These constructs were inspired by the language of a fisherman’s knot and its presentation of spatial qualities. The properties of looping, twisting and intersecting ropes speak to spatial connections within a built environment. Void begets void, solid begets solid, creating inhabitable and complementary space.

Introverted | Extroverted Living
The world population is growing. As urbanization becomes a prominent demographic trend the challenge is how to comfortably and responsibly house the ever larger number of city dwellers. In the United States, where large apartment blocks are not looked upon favorably, even in places such as New York or Chicago that utilize these developments as housing strategy, how can designers and planners create desirable housing within a dense urban fabric? On the site of an historic Tootsie Roll factory with a preserved facade in SoHo, customizable modular living units mix with adaptable public and performance spaces, giving SoHo and its residents a return to its history as an artists’ colony, built for the 21st century and beyond. Layered Living
The American dream may well be a detached single-family residence, two-car garage, white picket fence. But how can a designer bring the luxuries of single-family housing to a dense cityscape? The canvas presented offered the creator a 7.5’ wide plot within which to design a contemporary single-family home. Through the layering of spaces, a small family could live quite comfortably within such a space, complete with a balcony and a backyard.
