Welcome

I

t has been another exceptional year to date on the weather front – a mild winter made way for stunning summer displays of flowers and foliage in the Home House Garden, where The Raj Tent was a magnet for al fresco dining and celebrating. As Christmas approaches we are preparing for a change of scenery with our new Winter Chalet popping up in its place. Our calendar of events continues to evolve with you. If you can’t get enough of the Summer, Halloween and New Year’s Eve parties, House 21 has slotted in some fantastic ‘inbetweeners’; the Après Ski and Beach Parties saw you in fur and Speedos, so get ready for the crazy golf theme in November. The Garden continues to be a special place for events, with the Raj Tent hosting our first ever ‘Silent Cinema’ weekend complete with popcorn and candyfloss, and many of you toasted Roger Federer’s record breaking eighth Wimbledon win at our champagne lunch. September saw another first – the Home House Pooch Parade in the Garden. Our evenings at the magical Regent’s Park Theatre are still much-loved, with both dates this summer – a sell-out. And to step up the culture vulture in you, our Art Society calendar (with the help of Art History UK) has opened the door to some really special nuggets, including David Hockney at Tate Britain, East End street art, and Grayson Perry at the Serpentine. For the first time, we let our creative juices run amok on the front of the House with a stunning floral ‘installation’ to celebrate the Chelsea Flower Show and Wimbledon was celebrated with ‘tennis balls galore’ in The Garden. The monthly Thirsty Thursday Social Drinks is hugely popular so drop by to catch up with fellow members, old and new. In September, we introduced three new ‘victual’ events – the Supper, Drinks and Wine clubs. The Debating Society has taken advantage of the current political debacles with Brexit and events across the pond. Thank you all for your generous support to last year’s charity. We raised £13,757 for TACT (The Adolescent and Children’s Trust). In May, we welcomed our new charity, Save the Children UK. We will assist in raising vital funds to keep saving and rebuilding children’s lives in the midst of conflict, unrest, natural disasters, disease outbreaks and extreme poverty. The changeover of The Garden ‘house’ from open sided tent to heated glass marquee is the signal that the ‘silly’ season is upon us once again! Our Private Events team are preparing for a record year with so many of you being ahead of the game on planning your festive events. 2017 will be the third year that the House will welcome guests over the Christmas period including Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The Garden will also feature our first ‘Winter Bar’ for all things cosy and warming. It’s the most magical place to be, and this year will see a sparkling array of events to entertain you and your loved ones. We hope that you enjoyed the Summer Party as much as we loved creating it, and now it’s time to plan for Friday 27th October – Home House’s Halloween Party and our famous New Year’s Eve Party! And as 2018 approaches, get ready to enjoy some celebratory events to welcome in the club’s auspicious 20th anniversary. It would never have happened without you all.

Dear Fellow Members, I’m not really sure why the number seven is considered lucky, but for many it is. There are seven days of the week, seven continents, seven colours of the rainbow, there are seven dwarves, and, of course, 007, to name but a few. Add to that list our lovely Seventh Issue! And yes, it is you that is super-lucky because in this issue we not only celebrate our fabulous female members in the ‘Ladies of the House’ section, but we also have fun interviews with movie legend Fenella Fielding, cover star Michelle Dewberry, and pages upon pages of you all enjoying the best party venue in town! As we enter the fall season and with winter looming, we have written about some great ski destinations for you to explore and, looking beyond, there are sunnier options in the east and west in our Travel Tales. My personal highlight of the year – the Home House Halloween Party will be here before you know it followed by numerous winter events, so it promises to be a whirlwind of merriment and debauchery as always at the club. While you are in the Christmas spirit please do be generous to the amazing and tirelessly helpful Save the Children, our new charity partner for the year. Please enjoy this issue and feel free to write to me or Christina with your feedback and suggestions, as we get ready for Issue 8, which will be out in March along with a lot of sunshine!

Off the Wall: Street Artist Dotmaster Brings His Art Inside Home House We sit down at the club with iconic street artist Dotmaster to discover the inspiration behind his thought-provoking art pieces, now featured directly on the walls of Home House. Photography by Ian Cox

otmaster’s identity as a street artist has evolved immensely; from “drunk tagging” under the cloak of darkness in the 90s, to painting legally granted walls, and receiving requests for art pieces from home owners and galleries alike. He has gained significant media attention, allowing him to partner with galleries, and other artists to continue to pursue new projects around the world. During our conversation, Dotmaster described his past, his art, and his ambitions: Did you have any formal education in art? I left school when I was 15, so I had no real education. A friend of mine thought the stuff I did with graffiti was good enough, and when I was about 27 I made a graffiti profile in seven days. I submitted it, got in, and ended up with a fine arts degree from Chichester University. Did you find the transition between street art and formal art education difficult? Not really, I already knew how to paint, so I ended up learning about all the art I couldn’t do. I did quite large performance pieces for the end of my degree, which were syndicated worldwide. I was on BBC News and other media sites for a David Blaine extreme performance type stunt in Brighton called Man in a Box, which was quite a big press deal at the time. It was a time-based piece of work, press could keep visiting it, and they had to close the gallery half way through because I lost my mind. So, what I ended up doing at the end of my degree was quite different than what I was doing on the street. The array of things they were teaching me was so interesting, but I think since my idea of art has never really been gallery based, the idea of continuing to do work that didn’t fit in a gallery was always the next step for me. What are you trying to achieve through street art? My art has always been about public interaction. I think graffiti in general is about public interaction. When you wake up in the morning, walk down your street and see a new tag or a new stencil, I think people often take ownership of the art. Some people will hate it, but some people will love it. Are you trying to influence people in any way? Not really, no. I have a slightly dark sense of humour, so all the kids in the Rude Kids series (downstairs at Home House) are all my daughter’s friends. I saw my daughter and her friends nearing 9 and 10 years old, and thought how they’d all be teenagers soon; sullen, miserable, rude teenagers. So, before they turned into these monsters, I wanted to document my kid’s peer group. But I thought it was a bit boring to do picturesque, cutesy images, so why not show them doing something they’ll feel very comfortable doing as teenagers but uncomfortable doing as children. I got them all to swear and throw up fingers and whatever else, and that photoshoot inspired the artwork. The whole point of it is the juxtaposition of innocence and teenage angst. What other projects are you hoping will leave an impression on viewers? I do these photo-realistic pictures of trash. Many people in graffiti are trying to make the streets look prettier, but by graffiti artists moving into an area, changing it and re-gentrifying the place from an industrial wasteland; all this graffiti plays into the hands of the developers. The area gets trendy, and the poor artists are then shoved out. I decided to paint stuff that would make the street look worse. Perhaps people who are looking at it all week will throw out less trash, perhaps they won’t, perhaps it just makes them think about rubbish, but perhaps that’s enough. Instead of some political slogan telling people what to think or do, I like acting by example rather than preaching.

Who were your inspirations growing up, during your art education, and now? Lots. From art school, Rebecca Horn is amazing, Joseph Beuys, and I love the American pop art stuff, Andy Warhol was very clever. People like Nick Walker, to watch him work, along with other stencil artists, was really influential in my career. Others like Dface and Ben Eine are inspiring as well. Have you ever strayed from stencil art into other mediums? I oil paint; I’ve been a performance artist, digital artist, poet, and an actor. In terms of graffiti, I don’t like lettering. But I do this thing called “Toys” where I paint large-scale toys, and because they're so big, they don't lend themselves to stencils. In graffiti, “toy” means your stuff is rubbish, some people say it stands for “throw over yours”, but it could also simply be a reference to going back to kindergarten, as in amateur art. I started doing these huge toys drawing the word “toy” on the walls, and obviously there’s an irony in it. I started doing those in Norway, but I don't do them often because I usually like to paint things that are life-size. When you walk down an alley, or you turn a corner and there’s a figure that’s your realistic size, I think it hits quite hard. On your website, your slogan reads, “There is no subculture, only subversion,” what does that mean? Wearing a cool t-shirt or having a sleeve tattoo, these are the signifiers of a subculture, but it doesn't mean you belong there – it means you’ve donned a costume. You can't belong to a subculture – there is no subculture – it is created by you subverting culture. You can't get a Nirvana t-shirt and be part of the scene; you have to go to the gig. It’s not about buying the trappings of a subculture and being part of a subculture, it's actually about making a difference and doing something subversive. How did your collaboration with Home House come about? It’s been quite a long conversation, and quite funny because I didn’t really want to do it initially, since it’s not public and it’s in a gilded cage. I think I made it difficult for Home House by saying ‘no canvases, I’ll paint on the walls.’ But as soon as they said yes, I was quite hooked. Home House is one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in London full stop, so for me to actually make a mark on the walls here is quite a subversive thing. And actually, it’s important to break some rules. Why is breaking the rules so important? Breaking the rules is at the heart of street art: it’s unsanctioned and unasked for – it’s one man’s obsession in a public space. If you look at it from an artistic point of view, all art that is hailed as great art within the past hundred years breaks the rules. Picasso is important because he broke the rules, same with Monet, Joseph Boise and all the others. These people are all rule-breakers, and they all bring something original to the game.

Simply di vine As one of England’s leading ladies, Fenella Fielding has had a wonderful career in the TV and ilm industry. We sit down with her to discuss her early career, life and inluences‌

Fenella Fielding in Carry on Screaming with Harry H. Corbett

F

enella Fielding is best known for her 1960s film appearances in classic comedies including Carry on Screaming, Doctor in Clover and Carry on Regardless. She was the voice of the Blue Queen in Dougal and the Blue Cat and the telephone operator and loudspeaker voice in The Prisoner. Her illustrious career in theatre includes the title roles in Hedda Gabler and Colette. She’s fondly remembered for a number of appearances on the Morecambe & Wise Show, as well as playing The Vixen in Uncle Jack. Her most recent TV appearance was on Skins in 2012. Fenella’s career began in the early 50s and she’s still in demand, particularly for that amazing rich velvet and rather suggestive voice. Even now, she is still a firm favourite on Radio 4. She’s very modest though. When asked to tell us about herself, she simply says, “I’m an actress…in my lifetime of a career it’s like I’ve always been an actress. But my interests go far beyond my own performances. I love reading, art, theatre, film and dancing a bit myself.” She doesn’t even mention that she has worked with many of the greats in comedy and stage. She does go a little agog when pressed on the favourite people she’s worked with; including Paul Scofield, Sir Ian McKellen, and more recently Simon Russell Beale. When asked if she always had a passion for acting, Fenella says, “Yes, I think I did. I started off at the age of three reciting lots of poems, like kids do, and then progressed to putting on shows in the garden with my cousin Billie and the girl from number 98 Mowbray Road.” The enthusiasm clearly grew and grew – describing herself as a ‘kidlet’, she stood outside the stage door waiting to speak to Alec Guiness and made impassioned speeches to him. “He was lovely. Never made me feel silly.” It always seems a bit mysterious how people get started in the film industry, and Fenella is even herself a bit puzzled about her own beginning: “I’m tempted to say I’ll never know, but one thing led to another. I was first offered a film part when I was playing a lead in a Ronald Firbank musical, about to transfer to the West End. I got noticed in it and I was offered a small part in Sapphire, where I played a salesgirl in a fancy knickers shop.” The musical Fenella refers to was Valmouth. It hit the theatres in the late fifties and was to become her big break. She brought the house down every night with extraordinary entrances and exits. She’s rather renowned

for her act of chasing the stable lad into the barn and coming back with a mouthful of hay. That just seemed to convey everything and the audience were entranced. People came night after night to see what she’d do next. Fenella has worked on iconic British movies such as Carry on Screaming. What was it like to work with such legends as Sid James and Kenneth Williams, one might wonder? “I was in Carry on Regardless (I had a scene with Kenneth Connor), Sid was in the film but we didn’t have any scenes together. I did some radio with him though, a show called Hancock’s Half Hour. I don’t remember too much about it but it was a great honour to be in it, and whereas Tony Hancock was very off-hand, Sid was very friendly. It was only ages later that I realised that Tony was probably hungover. I didn’t really know about those things when I was just starting out.” “Working with Kenneth Williams in Carry on Screaming was marvellous. Now that was 1966, but it had been quite different when we co-starred in a stage show Pieces of Eight in the late fifties. The show had been very successful, but it wasn’t very nice to do. Kenneth just wanted to be like Greta Garbo. He wanted to be alone and just have me give him the cues! There were a few tears – mostly mine.” In the 60s and 70s, comedy was less blatant and relied on innuendo in a way that it doesn’t do anymore. Is comedy still as effective despite it being much more overstated? Fenella speculates: “There was an innocence then. I’ve done tons of comedy – some of the funniest I’ve ever done was on TV in the early 60s, based on Stories from Saki. I couldn’t go on a bus, it was so popular. Within two weeks, we’d achieved an audience only second to Coronation Street’s audience, and the run was extended from four weeks to twelve. It was very witty stuff. They were wonderful plays. The humour wasn’t innuendo, but it was the humour of character, which is always best. I had the delightful task of being one of the leading people.” What about today’s comedy movies; does Fenella think they are as funny now as they were in the past? “If they’re really funny, then they are really funny. The thing that comes to mind, although this is not a movie, is Frasier. Those two characters; Frasier Crane and his brother are fantastic together. So it’s the same thing really; the humour of character.” When talking about contemporary actors she admires, there is one in particular who stands out: “Mark Rylance. I love the way

Home House

13

he disappears into each different character and then re-emerges as himself afterwards. It’s just like magic. He can play anything it seems. And Simon Russell Beale. I’ve always admired him in the classics, and I was really happy to be teamed with him a few years ago at the Reform Club when we performed some translations of Greek classics. Mark Rylance was supposed to be there, but he was filming in America – it overran so he pulled out at the last minute. I had so wanted to work with him, but Simon was terrific.” Among the legendary actors Fenella has worked with she most enjoyed: “The charming and nice Tony Curtis. I did Drop Dead Darling with him. He just got on with it. He was very good on horseback, too. That was part of the scenes we did together. I had to have riding lessons in Hyde Park, although I must say not enough lessons. In the film he was less chivalrous. He had a string of wives, and I was one of them. The story was he killed each one to inherit their fortune then moved onto the next. To dispose of me he erected a hedge for my horse to jump over. What the horse and I didn’t know was that he positioned it in front of a cliff, and over we went.” “I did Ideal Husband on stage with Kate O’Mara. She was very charming as a leading lady and felt her responsibility to all the members of the company. And she could act a lot - anything, everything.” Fenella was a pioneer in fashion and style in the 50s and 60s – Dusty Springfield freely admitted that Fenella was the inspiration for her eye makeup. To this day, Fenella is still very much in touch with the fashion scene. “The 50s and 60s were very exciting times. So much change - with Mary Quant especially. But what’s happening now is pretty good. Vivienne Westwood is terrific. She’s thinking of style and wearable-ness, I think she’s huge.” When asked how Fenella thinks the movie industry has changed over the years, she replies, “There’s less of it. And if one looks back to times when one was really too young to be even thinking about it, there was much more romantic stuff then as opposed to sexy. I still love the really old musicals with tap dancing; pre-Ginger Rogers and then Ginger Rogers. But also the backstage ones like Stage Door and Roxie Hart, both which I think are brilliantly funny.” Fenella was a leader in helping women in a man’s world – setting a remarkable example by taking her craft so seriously, and being one of the first women in the mid-70s to stage her own one-woman show. I put this to her and suggest she must be very proud. Instead she seems a little bewildered. “I would be if I knew what I’d done. I suppose I might have been quite early to be a woman putting together my own one woman show, which was a very varied programme of sketches, songs and dance.” It really does seem that she had the idea to do it and simply got on with it, not even thinking ‘but this isn’t what other people are doing’.

Fenella will be 90 in November. How does she spend her time nowadays? “Aside from my weekly yoga, dance and personal training sessions in the gym, I’ve been very busy with my memoirs. I’ve written it and recorded it with a friend and it’s been released as an audio book. I did a run of West End shows in a small basement club to try the material out – that was amazing fun. In fact, we’re going to do one at Home House soon! I really like how Home House keeps quiet about what a divine place it is, but what I like most are the people. It seems to be able to accommodate the most amazing mixture of people and things.” …and if she could describe the house in three words? “Simply di vine”

Fenella Photographed by Peter Deal, 1967

Save the Date: October 10, 2017 Fenella Fielding will be appearing at Home House 10/10/17 when she will be reading some extracts from her memoirs Do You Mind If I Smoke?. The reading will be followed by a short Q&A hosted by Simon McKay, co-author of the book, and then there’s an opportunity to meet Fenella and get a copy of the book signed. Fenella’s memoirs tell very personal stories about innocence, early struggles, professional jealousies and intriguingly a chapter about London tarts and gangsters. The stories are witty, warm and beautifully observed from an extraordinary life – expressing great warmth for the characters encountered…and all told in that unmistakable, ever alluring Fenella Fielding voice.

I N T E RV I E W

What experiences have led you to become the successful businesswoman you are today? My background has always been in IT and technology. I entered The Apprentice ten years ago and won, then had the chance to develop some of my own business ideas. I wrote a book, Anything is Possible, about my story, and now I do a lot of public speaking at corporate events and such. I just ran for Parliament in the last election, which was both interesting and exhausting, but I loved it. Running in the election has given me a great perspective for my work reviewing politics and current affairs, it was an eye-opening experience, both challenging and good. Why did you decide to become a contestant on The Apprentice? I think because life is short, and because I’ve always been up for a challenge – whatever it is. I’ve done marathons, triathlons, and just saw The Apprentice as another challenge, so why not? I think life is amazing and I always try to say ‘yes’ to things. I’m a very spontaneous person, so I don’t massively think through consequences; I just kind of get up and go. I think life is for living.

have a voice in our head. The most powerful gift to yourself is to make that voice positive, because too many of us have a voice that beats ourselves up. If you can try and make that voice kind and encouraging, become aware of it and make it a positive one, that’s a really powerful thing to do. Are there any women in your life that have been particular inspirations to you? My sister passed away when I was 17, and that’s what has given me my drive. Since my sister didn’t get to have an adult life, I try to do lots of ridiculous and crazy things to try and honour her memory, because she’ll never get the opportunity to do those things herself. You’ve always got to find the positive, and my sister’s not going to come back, so what I can take from the situation is to just really embrace life. I have nieces I love very much, and I want them to grow up and think they can do whatever they want. I don’t believe that girls can’t do things; I’ll ask for anything, I’ll do anything, and it might not always work out, but that’s not what matters. What accomplishment are you most proud of? One of the things I’m proudest of was, a full segment I did on The Pledge about mental health, where I admitted that I’ve struggled with suicidal feelings in the past. I think it is really important to be honest, because life can be really hard and too many people just present the good. There’s often another side as well, so I try to have honesty, transparency, and let people know it’s alright to not always be okay. What are you currently working on and what are your future plans? I’m in the process of making a documentary about the future of IT and technology and setting up an IT recruitment company. I’ve also been doing a lot of speaking and motivational work which I love. Very soon I’ll be setting up some online courses, because I get asked so often for advice on this and that. I want to give people advice and guidance on how to set up a business, manage cash flow, seek investment and such. Also, I have my own show on Sky News called The Pledge, which presents every Thursday. We’re off during the summer, but we’ll be back for Season 5 to continue to debate current events and news.

How did your experience on The Apprentice influence your career path and personal growth? I think on a personal level, it gave me a lot of trust issues, because people sold stories about me to newspapers afterwards, but on the positive it opened great doors for me. All the media work I do now on television is a direct consequence of the show. It’s been a double-edged sword, but it’s given me experiences that I feel blessed to have had. I wouldn’t be sitting here if it wasn’t for The Apprentice, so I’m very grateful. What advice do you have for young women looking to enter the business world? I think the best advice I can give is also one of the hardest things to achieve, to just try and believe in yourself. I think there are always reasons ‘why not’ to do something, and I think we all

How long have you been a member of Home House, and what’s your favourite part of the club? I’ve been a member of Home House for about ten months now. I’ll come and work from here, hold business meetings, or have dinner to start a night out – and it’s always great. I would have to say my favourite spot is probably the bar. In particular, I had a great time at the Après Ski party. It was excellent, great music, great cocktails, I had a fantastic time. What’s the best part about being Michelle Dewberry? Honestly, I think the best thing about being me is that I’ve got a platform to be honest, which will hopefully help others. I think we live in a world that is getting increasingly more false, and I think that, particularly for young girls. I worry very much about that because they’re growing up in an environment where social media is putting pressure on them to look a certain way, act a certain way, and have a certain amount of money. What I try to do with my platform is speak with honesty, and inspire young girls to try and get ahead using your brain, as opposed to your boobs. You’ll see that a lot of times I’ll explain that if you see a picture of me, what you have to understand is that I have extensions in, fake lashes, this and that, but I try really hard to be honest about it. But lastly, the best part about being me is that I get to have a lot of fun, just look where I’m sitting now. I’m really blessed, aren’t I?

The Ladies of the House Our Members Share What They Love About Our Club When the notorious Elizabeth, Countess of Home, had a vision in 1773 to build a sophisticated ‘Pavilion’ for the purpose of enjoyment and entertainment, we can imagine the kind of ladies that she wished to attract. Independent. Passionate. Fun. Fast-forward 244 years, and we meet some of today’s ladies – we think she’d be proud.

Anna Persaud Mixing Beauty and Science

Anna is CEO of online beauty products provider, This Works, a company created in 2003 by former beauty director of Vogue UK and international journalist, Kathy Phillips. Its products – ranging from skin and eye care to sleep remedies – are all designed to optimise how our skin performs 24/7, based on our individual body clocks. When you speak to Anna, it’s clear that she doesn’t just speak the brand: she lives and breathes it too. Anna, a trained biochemist, is passionate about the benefits that science brings to the beauty industry. For her, beauty represents selfempowerment; it’s about providing time for self-care – something that’s not always easy in our busy lives. Anna’s pace of life means that she’s always on the go, constantly in touch with journalists, staff, and clients – and tying them all together is Home House. “I use the club in so many ways,” says Anna. “For meetings, taking calls, getting ready after work, you name it.” But like any self-respecting Home House member, life’s not all work and no play. Anna loves to take afternoon tea at the club, and shares the joy with the next generation by taking her children there to eat at the weekends. Once they’re safely tucked up in bed, the club is the perfect place to let off steam. “I absolutely love the New Year’s Eve parties at Home House,” Anna says. “For me, it feels like home the moment I walk through the door.”

Corliss Randall From New Orleans With Love

If you thought you knew everything about our resident singer, think again. As one of the most familiar faces at the club, Corliss always has a few tales up her sleeve… Born in New Orleans, club singer Corliss was destined to sing. At the tender age of three, she started to test those sexy soul blues that we now know so well. Driven by her passion for song, Corliss left the States aged 15 to train as an opera singer. Funded by the Catholic Church, she set off to share her amazing talents with the world, training in the best choral institutions to gain top-flight roles in opera houses across the continents. Corliss even met the love of her life in Rome. But it’s not all been violins and roses; once, upon arriving in Italy, all of her money got stolen – teaching Corliss the importance of using her wits, and to be financially independent. Corliss believes passionately in living each day to the full; a sentiment that became all too real when her close friend Amy Winehouse passed away in 2011. “For me, every day has to be filled with colour, with joy. I honestly believe you have to live each day like it’s your last.” With her flaming red hair and New Orleans’ drawl, Corliss is a largerthan-life character, with a heart the size of her native Louisiana. “I like to have opinions for sure, but I believe in being kind to everyone.” Corliss undertakes charity work, and raising funds for organisations such as the Children’s Intensive Care Appeal at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. Next time you’re at Home House, make sure to go ask Corliss about her adventures: the stories she told us you won’t believe, and the rest we simply couldn’t tell!

Gina Miller Passionate About Female Financial Independence

One lady spearheading the movement towards female financial independence, is tour de force Gina Miller. Her business – Private Wealth Management – delivers transparency in asset management: something that’s revolutionised the sector in which she works, and which has, in Gina’s words, “upset a few of the traditionalists.” Not that that’s going to stop Gina: as well as running her business, Gina has founded two philanthropic organisations, including the True and Fair Foundation and The Goodwill Exchange. An optimist and a realist, Gina believes in the power of generosity to heal communities. She works with donors and philanthropists to support organisations that address a wide range of social and economic challenges. Recent beneficiaries for example include Crossway Pregnancy Crisis Centre, The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust and the Amber Trust for Blind Children. “Female financial independence is something I’m passionate about. As women, we’re all living longer, and it’s important to make sure you have comfortable provision for the future. Many women have just £5k savings in their own name; I want to help women to have confidence and control over their own destiny.” Having been a member for 15 years, Gina has experienced other clubs but remains loyal to Home House. “The club is so welcoming and comfortable. I love that it’s perfect for both socialising and business, and I use it for both.” In fact, Gina even met her husband at the club. A self-confessed workaholic, her friends “literally had to drag me out” to one of the now infamous Halloween parties. Her suitor was so taken by her witchy outfit (also chosen by Gina’s friends) that he kept sending drinks over the bar, and the rest is history...

Lucy West A Perfect Match for Home House

Tennis whites, lovely as they are, aren’t the most obvious choice of clothing for a networking lunch or drinks with friends – but at Home House, we don’t give two hoots about what you wear. Which is good news for our in-house tennis coach, Lucy West, who, more often than not, is found relaxing at Home House in her tennis gear before taking members through their paces at our courts over the road. Lucy, who’s been a member for 18 months, quickly caught our eye with her coaching prowess and we were delighted when she came on board. “I absolutely love being a member of Home House,” says Lucy. “The staff are amazing, the events are great fun and it’s a fantastic place to meet clients and friends. People are blown away when I bring them here. They literally cannot believe how beautiful it is.” Lucy, who also runs tennis holidays, is passionate about encouraging more women in fitness. She teaches a whole cross section at the House: men, children, and of course, lots “of passionate, interesting, driven women with something to say.” As a member, Lucy loves the fact that you can party ‘til dawn, relax into a beautiful room and enjoy a gorgeous breakfast the next morning – not that it’s something she does often as she’s usually up at the crack of dawn, either on the court or in the gym! Something she has managed to squeeze into her agenda are the legendary dinners hosted by Andrew Richardson. “Andrew brings such an eclectic group of people together. There’s absolutely no agenda: just lovely people, and great fun.” All eligible bachelors please note; lovely Lucy announced her engagement in March and is due to be married on 9th November. Christmas-obsessed Lucy cannot wait for her perfect seasonal wedding!

Chartering Her Own Destiny

Around 18 months ago, Rebecca – who charters super-yachts for Monaco-based Ocean Independence – needed a base. It had to be supremely comfortable, central, and somewhere she’d be treated like family. The answer? Home House, naturally! A Monaco resident and trusted to look after many high-end clients, from celebrities to sports stars, Rebecca first heard about Home House while relaxing on a Caribbean beach. She fell in love with the club at first sight, and when she needed somewhere to stay for a few months, she decided to move in: something “that’s literally changed my life.” “I am so well looked after. It’s the perfect place to come and go; not that there’s any need to go anywhere – Home House has everything I need and more.” With so many rooms and events, isn’t staying at Home House a little…noisy? “Not at all” laughs Rebecca. “You could have a raving Halloween party down in the Vaults, and in my bedroom I wouldn’t even know.” Rebecca finds everything about Home House convenience personified. A competitive ultra-runner (Rebecca has successfully tackled the Marathon des Sables, aka ‘The Toughest Footrace on Earth’), regular training is important to her. Thanks to the gym on her doorstep, staying in top form has never been easier. “I get up, meet my trainer, get showered, have breakfast and am ready for work – all without leaving the building!” For some, staying at Home House might seem the ultimate luxury. For Rebecca, her stay not only represents better value than a managed apartment, it’s allowed her confidence to grow, both personally and professionally. “It’s the best money I’ve ever spent.”

Iskra Tsankova Adding A Touch Of Sparkle

As co-founder of DI Events, a company that’s passionate about creating ‘innovative and unforgettable memories’, it’s clear that Iskra Tsankova truly understands what it takes to create a fantastic night out. From parties to fundraisers, cocktail receptions, conferences and launches: her events are full of fun, fashion and passion! Therefore, it’s a massive compliment that Iskra is such an advocate of the events here at Home House. Iskra, who’s been a member “longer than she can remember” has put her remarkable talents to good use right here in Marylebone. She is also the founder of the Home House Women’s Club – a fantastic initiative that allows ladies to pitch their business in 60 seconds (if you haven’t discovered this yet, be sure to check out the next meeting). Iskra is a true chameleon, balancing her incredibly fast-paced events management role with being mum to her 12-year-old daughter, who loves to attend her shows – particularly the fashion ones. “My daughter can’t believe how hard I have to work. I want to be a great role model to her, so it’s important that she gets to see what it takes to succeed in business.” How then, does this self-confessed workaholic relax? If not found at home with a glass of red wine and cheese or playing tennis or volleyball, then you’ll find Iskra at her second home, mixing among friends old and new or dancing into the early hours in The Vaults under House 21. “Home House parties are amazing – and crazy! I’d never miss Halloween: it’s just the best fun.”

Tracey Woodward Taking Beauty To The Next Level

With over 30 years in the spa, retail and beauty business, Tracey Woodward has the impeccable credentials that iconic British Brand, Aromatherapy Associates, was looking for when they sought its new CEO in April last year. Tracey’s beauty story began in her teens when she impressed her boss with her eye for merchandise. Encouraged, Tracey saw a job interview at a beauty counter and decided to apply. Wearing a coatdress and pair of her friend’s shoes, she interviewed, got the role, and began her beauty career. Since then, Tracey has gone stellar, with roles at Urban Retreat, Lauder, Donna Karan and Aveda, all under her belt. Moreover, she works with several charities including Action for Children/Women Taking Action, Look Good Feel Better (which helps women going through cancer treatment to feel better through skilful makeup) and is a member of the Women’s Leadership Group at The Prince’s Trust. Tracey also has two children, and a husband with whom she built a deli business. With so much happening, Tracey finds welcome solace in Home House, where she has been a member since 2007. “I love the ambiance. The beautiful staircase when you enter; the garden – it all takes your breath away. It truly has a magical feel.” A dog owner, family woman and utterly down to earth, she also loves that she can rock up in her jeans – or throw on the glitz – and feel equally at home, “which certainly isn’t the case at other clubs.” Tracey concludes, “Home House is a great club. More women should join!”

Nina Sanders Part Of Home House History

Nina Sanders is Head of Marketing for a private family office in Mayfair, and was part of the interior and design and development management company, Candy & Candy, that re-designed House 21. Nina’s association with the House goes right back to the bricks and mortar. Nina left London in 2011 to live and work in Asia, but stayed in regular touch with the Home House team here in London. When she returned to the capital, she couldn’t stay away, and ended up suggesting that her friends host their wedding celebration at Home House. It proved to be the perfect place for a bespoke, high-end ceremony, complete with endless cocktails and heavenly canapés – just the temptation she needed to sign up as a member the very next day! Working in the events sector, Nina knows what we do inside out, but tells us she is constantly impressed by her life as a member. “There’s so much on offer, so much variety – I honestly don’t know how they do it! Likewise with the menus, which are always changing; you can have a beautiful meal or something lighter. I’m a real foodie, so it’s a big benefit.” Nina’s membership memories are jam-packed with good times, from the day she watched the Wimbledon final alongside a few wellknown sports stars, to getting in trouble for dancing on the table at the Rio Carnival party and bashing people with her feathers: “I could’ve sworn it was a stage!” Also in the memory bank is getting “freaked out” by the actors at the ‘Dead Famous’ Halloween party. “The costumes were seriously impressive. I loved dressing up as Poison Ivy, although I looked more like a green slime superhero from Ghostbusters, as opposed to a Dead Famous person!”

“It's quirky, it's individual, it's cool. There's no place like it.”

Home House

For The Love Of Golf

Vanessa is the Managing Director of Buttercups Training, a provider of quality training programmes to pharmacists, along with their technicians, and support staff working in the medical community. A pharmacist by profession, Vanessa founded the company from her home back in the 80s. Two decades later, and Buttercups Training is the leading training provider for pharmacy staff in the UK. Vanessa’s work frequently takes her from Buttercups’ Nottingham HQ to London where she makes at least two overnight stays per month. Having relied on hotel chains in the past, Vanessa was introduced to Home House and has never looked back! Now a member for three years, Vanessa has discovered a wealth of social activities at Home House. She really enjoys the arty side, for example the highly entertaining performances by Corliss Randall. She recognises that she’s barely scratched the surface of what’s on offer, and plans to try out both the poetry salon and book club. The biggest draw for Vanessa right now is the golf. The Home House Open, held at Stoke Park, was “wonderful fun…sipping champagne from a golf buggy was a definite highlight!” As for the game itself: Vanessa is a competent player, but wishes more women would join her on the course – at the last event, she was the only lady there. “It would be fantastic if more people would join me!” Vanessa also loved the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. “Being a member of Home House really helps you appreciate the best that London has to offer. The club manages to be glamourous, stylish, fun and yet homely – I absolutely love it.”

Lisa Shaddick Love Me, Love My Dogs

Lisa is managing director and owner of DA Public Relations Ltd, a global B2B marketing communications and branding consultancy that works internationally. She has worked at DA for 21 years and owned it for nine. Her Home House story began back in the early 2000s when her office was based just around the corner. “Home House proved a very convenient place to meet and entertain clients. People from overseas love the idea of meeting at a private members’ club in England – it is associated with exclusivity, and being quintessentially English. They loved it then, and they still do.” So the House was convenient…what else turned Lisa into a lifelong client? Quite simply – they love Lisa, but they love her dogs too. Lisa has two Bologneses – a small type of Bichon. Unsurprisingly, super-cuties Spaghie and Lola are always made welcome at the House. “They even have their own bowls behind the bar, and the staff check on how they are, which is really sweet. But perhaps the nicest memory was when the guys in the bar iced a plate for Spaghie’s first birthday at Home House, more than 12 years ago. So cute!” It’s this level of attentiveness and lack of pretention that lies behind Lisa’s loyalty to Home House – to the extent that she’s spent two milestone birthdays here. “I spent my 40th and my 50th here at Home House surrounded by friends and family. Each time I woke up I wished I could do it all over again.” Day to day, Lisa can often be found in The Boardroom meeting clients and journalists or working in and around the various rooms. “Home House is aptly named. It really is like being at home, but with a totally luxurious experience to go with it.”

Cecilia Harvey You're Breaking Our Heart!

Fintech guru Cecilia joined Home House nine years ago, and has more memories than she can remember – although an impromptu rendition of a certain Simon and Garfunkel song will always have a special place in her heart. New Yorker Cecilia initially found the Brits’ reserve a bit of a culture shock. “I’m used to living in a city where everyone will strike up a conversation with you. It’s only when I walked into Home House that I truly felt as if I was back home.” Cecilia loves technology, and is working on an exciting project called “This Tech World”. This project is designed to help those with emerging ideas for tech products and services to showcase their talents. She’s also a co-founder of an app designed to help connect, attract and retain women in the technology industry. “The reason I’m so passionate about my projects is because I believe tech allows people to live healthier, happier, and more productive lives. Friends joke that I’m becoming the Oprah of Technology!” Inspired by her mother, Cecilia says that she strives to be pure, open, and to have the best intentions in everything that she does. At Home House, she is able to relax and be herself. “Home House is a palace of fun. I know that when I walk through the door, I’m going to create memories. Home House members are fantastic; the staff make me feel like a queen. There’s no place in London like it.” Cecilia recalls her first Spring Party. “Every room was transformed into this glamorous 1920s theme. Everyone looked amazing in their gorgeous costumes. As I walked into the Bison Bar, I had a group of people greet me singing, “Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart.” It made my night. That could only happen at Home House!”

“Home House is simply a palace of fun.”

Lindsey Forrester Roberts A Member Since Inception

A graduate from Chelsea’s KLC School of Design and founder of interior design firm, Forrester Roberts, Lindsey’s style, impeccable taste, and love of all things artisan can be found across London’s most prestigious homes. During our interview, she’s bubbling with excitement about her new venture, Forrestfield. Founded along with fellow interiors expert, Sara Bonfield, the duo have made their mark at many boutique hotels and high-end residences, and are on the lookout for exciting new projects! One of the first ever Home House gals, Lindsey fell in love with the surroundings the moment we opened our doors in 1998. She’s even fed her interior design mojo by seeking out the Countess of Home’s original pen-and-ink plans at the Sir John Soane’s Museum. What does she love about Home House? “It’s been great to watch it grow and change.” Back in the 90s, the club was the go-to place for Lindsey and her sisters to party, and she has great memories of the Bison Bar “when it was like a gentlemen’s club…all squashy sofas and naughty behaviour.” Today, the Roberts quartet are still regular visitors, enjoying relaxed times in the garden and the Bison Bar, while Lindsey is often found treating clients to lunch in the Octagon Dining Room. Those hedonistic days may be a distant memory now, but some things never change. “The staff are brilliant. Some have been here for decades and they’re absolutely gorgeous. They’re a big part of why Home House is such a great place to go.” Unsurprisingly for a lady with stunning taste, Lindsey says her favourite part of Home House is one of the most original rooms in England, the Etruscan room. Lindsey loves its history and the fact that the interior has been kept pretty close to the Robert Adam’s design “but, look carefully at the miniature portraits, there’s a few contemporary surprises to make you smile.” And be sure to take a look and keep an eye out for the Countess of Home’s ‘stairway to heaven’.

“It's been great to watch Home House grow and change.”

What do you say after ‘HELLO’? Our executive coach and mentor, Jon Treanor discusses ways to a healthy relationship.

H

ome House members are unique human beings, and are naturally very sociable. We enjoy the company of others, enjoy positive interactions and meaningful friendships. To some extent, good relationships are just as important for our survival as food and water. Therefore, the better our relationships work, the happier and healthier we are. Research shows that people with satisfying relationships are likely to have fewer health problems and live longer. In contrast, those who do not have many social connections tend to show signs of depression and cognitive decline. Not a typical Home House member, methinks! Relationships therefore, are about making sure that once we are past the ‘You had me at helloʼ point, situations are dealt with in a way that supports the health and well-being of any potential partners. Every relationship is unique, but there are several key elements that are common from ‘Helloʼ to developing a good healthy partnership. Whilst 'energy' plays a huge part (more on this later) here are some more practical pointers... • Trust – relationships are built on trust, which is essential for good communication and forming strong bonds. Without trust, relationships are unlikely to survive. • Mindfulness – being mindful of what you do and say means that you are more likely to maintain strong relationships. Relationship issues can arise if you let negative emotions affect you or your partner. • Mutual respect – strong supportive relationships rely heavily on mutual respect. Respect leads to being more understanding of each other's needs, beliefs and values. • Good communication – relationships are richer if each partner ‘makes an effort’ to share their feelings, hopes, dreams and even their vulnerabilities. Being honest and open with a partner also allows us to connect on a deeper level.

Let us now get back to energy or what some people wrongly refer to as ‘chemistry’. Chemistry is the study of the composition, behaviour and properties of matter, and of the elements of the Earth and its atmosphere. Energy on the other hand is the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. It is the energy that we tune into with each other that is important to be aware of, as its this energy

26

Home House

that initially attracts us; we either see something in another we identify with or a trait that we admire and may be missing in ourselves. We need to re-charge this energy from time to time. To do this we need to step back, take a breath, be mindful and reflect.

It is the energy that we tune into with each other that is important to be aware of, as it’s this energy that initially attracts us... Our relationships are often the central point of conversation. They do not define us, we define them. Our relationship with ourself is the most important relationship of all. So, it is good to take time out from our busy social lives and reflect upon what is important in life. For example, people choosing a sailing retreat onboard a yacht often reflect on where they are in life, be it with work or in personal relationships. It is an ideal opportunity to step back, often alone, or

as a couple to enquire ‘what can I do to improve my relationship?’ or ‘what role am I playing in our relationship that I may need to change?’ What we say after ‘Hello’ depends on how connected to our own values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours we are. We all need to take time out to explore what this means for us as individuals. Despite the charge of energy we feel on first meeting someone who we are attracted to, unless we understand and are aligned to what we want from a relationship ourselves, then a long-term relationship is unlikely to be on the cards. Finding ‘the one’ might simply end up being for one night only. And that’s OK too! Maybe, the next time you attend one of the many amazing Home House social events and meet new people, be curious about how the energy between you is working beyond the initial physical attraction! Jon Treanor has been a member of Home House since 2009 and established the mindfulness members events at the beginning of 2016. Jon proposed Save the Children UK as this year’s Home House charity of choice and is involved in a number of campaigns to help raise funds.

6-year-old Phuong Sophon in his 2nd grade lesson on writing and word recognition. Bloomsbury Law LITIGATION – A Game Of Chess Or An Art To Win? Jamil Ahmud, Partner and Head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Bloomsbury Law Solicitors

L

ocated in the heart of Mayfair, Bloomsbury Law is a firm that prides itself in providing quality legal services with a great emphasis on client care and a personal approach. From the moment you instruct us and enter our offices at 17 Manchester Street, London W1, it will be clear to you that we are ‘not just’ another law firm. In a highly competitive and litigious world, the careful management of disputes has become an essential part of business life. Whether it is the greater trading opportunities brought about by globalisation and e-commerce, the increasing regulation of our business life, or the changing fortunes of businesses and individuals through the economic cycle, the scope for disputes to arise is growing. Litigation arises in all sorts of cases that involve liabilities such as problems between companies, individuals, landlords and tenants, tax disputes or unfulfilled contracts. Likewise, litigation is the process when a dispute cannot be resolved by negotiation. Lawyers are often involved when the client first anticipates an issue that might not be capable of being resolved amicably. Litigation is the antithesis of negotiation. It can be a brutal battle in which one has to out-think his/ her opponent and be one step ahead of the opponent. Litigation can be compared to a game of chess in which you need to anticipate what is coming next. For this, you need to have a ready joined-up strategy, as the opposition bring up new questions regarding your client’s claim, all the while trying to find weaknesses in theirs. There is a great deal of knowledge, research and strategy involved in a litigation case. Each case is different and evolves with time. A smart litigation lawyer will always have to be seeking different angles in order to be successful for his/her client. They have to be assessing the case to avoid being manoeuvred onto the back foot, and find a weakness in your opponent’s case to exploit. At Bloomsbury Law, we perceive litigation as a form of art. A good litigation lawyer must not only have a very good knowledge of law, but he/she must also have a very good tactical strategy in order to be able to obtain the best outcome for his/her client. We make sure that every case that we take on we are able to add value and obtain our client’s most desirable outcome, and more often than not, we exceed our clients’ expectations. Our lawyers have extensive experience of dealing with disputes both in the UK and internationally and resolving them robustly by litigation, negotiation, arbitration, expert determination, mediation and other methods of alternative dispute resolution. In every case, our focus is to help our clients understand the options, and to help them to make the decision that supports their business interests cost-effectively.

Bloomsbury Law No-Fault Divorce Louisa Gothard, Family Law Solicitor, Bloomsbury Law Solicitors

T

he divorce process in England and Wales is currently a fault based divorce system, and this can exacerbate conflict between both the Petitioner and the Respondent during the divorce process. Two of the five facts to demonstrate that the marriage has irretrievably broken down are that the Respondent has behaved in such a way that the Petitioner cannot be expected to live with them, and that the Respondent has committed adultery. These facts require an element of fau lt , but a lso mea n t hat people ca n issue divorce proceedings within two years of marriage breakdown. Therefore, it is encouraging divorcing couples to make false allegations on the divorce papers in the event that they do not wish to wait two years before issuing a two years separation with consent petition. There are more than 110,000 divorces each year, many of which see the encouragement of conflict and blame, relying on the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, which is a law that is over 40 years old. However, it appears that the government has no plans to change the existing law on divorce. Earlier this year, the case of Owens v Owens highlighted why a no-fault divorce should perhaps be available. In that case the examples of behaviour as quoted by the wife on the ‘unreasonable behaviour’ petition were not deemed

unreasonable enough. The Court of Appeal therefore dismissed the wife’s appeal against the dismissal of her petition for divorce based on her husband’s unreasonable behaviour, leaving her ‘trapped in a loveless marriage.’ Resolution, whose core principle is to reduce conflict and resolve matters amicably, has been campaigning to allow people to divorce without blame, asking for legislative change and will continue to do so. Only by implementing a no-fault divorce system do Resolution believe that a situation like this will be prevented from happening again. No-fault divorce is widely supported by the public and would remove the blame from divorce, thus helping couples to work through the difficult process in a dignified way without the need for mudslinging. Would this be a step towards a divorce process that is more civilised, perhaps? It would no doubt provide the opportunity for more of an amicable separation, which would certainly help to minimise any disruption of children involved. If couples just grow apart through no fault of either party, surely they should be able to choose to divorce in a dignified manner. A No Fault Divorce Bill would seek to reform the law so that a divorce could be issued where both parties issue a joint petition in order to satisfy the court that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. Fitness First Our expert personal training team is here to encourage and help with any of your training needs. We catch up with our trainers to learn a few tips.

J

onathan Drever has been working at Home House as a personal trainer since early 2009. He joined after completing a Bsc (honours) Sports Studies and Physical education degree at the University of Worcester. He is REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals) level 3 and a level 1 UKSCA strength and conditioning coach. What is your specialisation? Along with helping clients with health and wellbeing, my main area of specialisation is strength and conditioning. I create training programmes using the latest sports science research that allows clients who are training for a marathon, a weekend warrior, or are a keen cyclist to reach their potential. People often underestimate their physical ability. Best nutritional tip? Drink water! People often try on trend diets and nutritional advice when looking to change their body composition. They often find the simple task of drinking enough water the hardest. Aim for around 2 litres per day. Tip: Drink 300ml – 500ml of water 30 minutes before a meal. Research has shown that by doing this, along with a weekly exercise program can increase weight loss by 44% over a 12-week period. Best exercise tip? Get off the X-trainer and Bench Press. Firstly, seeing members in the gym working to get healthier is a great thing, however, you need to train smart. Doing the same exercises, at the same weight / intensity each visit is not an effective way to train – something I see all too often. Change things up a little, work on the weak areas (those you do not enjoy!), and challenge yourself. We have a weekly work out on the wall in the main room for some inspiration! Insanity: “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Favourite running route? My favourite running route in London is running from Dalston along the canal, and through Regents Park on my work commute to Home House. It is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle.

Home House Trainer Charis Cooper

C

haris Cooper combines her three years of teaching Vinyasa & Power yoga with her five years of Personal Training experience. Her ethos is to steer away from short-term fads, and encourage a healthy lifestyle that is truly sustainable and enjoyable.

What is your specialisation? I always try to ensure that workouts are interesting and engaging, keeping it new and fresh. My high levels of empathy and dynamic approach allow me to read the body, adapting and encouraging where necessary for each individual to reach optimum health, wellbeing and fitness. Best nutritional tip? Forget about counting calories and following diets. Consistency is key, so stick to what is sustainable for you whilst getting all your macronutrients, i.e a balance of healthy fats, proteins and carbs. Best Exercise tip? Improving posture and functionality of the body is just as important as reaching your goals of weight loss and/or muscle gain. It's possible to do both at the same time with the right training programme and advice.

Favourite running or cycling route? My favourite cycling route is along the canal from Camden to Haggerston on a sunny day.

K

ieran Hassett has been working at Home House since late 2005, and has continued to help members achieve results with their own fitness goals. Having studied at the YMCA London, he then went on to complete courses covering areas such as supple strength and core stability. What is your specialisation? High intensity circuit training and boxing are a strong focus. Core development and postural work are areas I also enjoy working on with clients. Best nutritional tip? Eat balanced, eat well, and eat enough. Too little or the wrong type of foods can compromise your training. Best exercise tip? When you think you've done enough, push just that little bit more.

Home House Trainers, from left to right: Dawit Haile, Luigi Corcione, Jonathan Drever and Kieran Hassett

Favourite running or cycling route? Cycling from Herne Hill to Crystal Palace, then back down through Dulwich. It starts steady, but builds progressively, and doesn't feel like you're in a city with all the tress and open spaces around. Coming down the big hill is a lot more fun that going up it though...

L

uigi Corcione has explored his passion for movement for over 20 years through athletics, general fitness, and Personal Training. He is a fully qualified Garuda and Personal Trainer, and his unique method combines the Garuda apparatus with Personal and Resistance Training. What is your specialisation? I am also a licensed Buff Bones instructor, a special work-out method designed to strengthen bones, enhance posture, and promote better balance. This technique is designed to help clients through their physical rehabilitation journey, and especially to help clients affected by osteoporosis. Through the years I have developed my own technique that combines Pilates with more traditional fitness practices; something that I wanted to share with others. I train a variety of clients having different fitness levels and backgrounds, challenging every physique, and taking clients through personalised programmes – built on the respect of body integrity and movement precision.

Best nutritional tip? Base your diet on healthy, unprocessed Mediterranean foods, preferably in season, that is abundant

in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and olive oil. For example, eat plenty of apricots in June to improve your skin health, and oranges or tangerines in November to strengthen your immune system for the winter and beyond. Best exercise tips? Too many people at the gym are not consistent with their training routines or are simply moving their arms and legs up and down and then they wonder why they aren’t getting results. People need to be consistent and during their exercise focus on the muscles that are being used. This will get faster, more effective results. So… 1. Be consistent 2. Make your exercise routine fit with your life 3. When exercising, FOCUS! Favourite running route? Hampstead Heath is just perfect for running. It’s crisscrossed with both paved and dirt paths through woodlands and grassy knolls. It is a popular place for hill workouts up Parliament Hill, which has amazing views of the city.

D

awit Haile has been working in the fitness industry for the last four years in roles for Home House and as an Asics Trainer within their f lagship London store. He has vast experience in teaching health and fitness classes such as running clubs, Abs, HIIT Circuit and Tabata. Dawit is committed to motivating others to be the best they can be. His training provides an effective and highly energized workout, and is supportive and individual to your needs.

What is your specialisation? My specialit y is in creating high intensit y workouts that maximise calories burnt in a short period of time. I focus on Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) to restore the body to a resting state, and adapt it to the exercise just performed. It can be demanding, but it’s the best way to utilise your energy systems to get fit and burn fat. Best nutritional tip? Don’t over complicate things and follow a balanced diet of all the macro nutrients; proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Stay hydrated, drinking plenty of fluids to maintain and replenish water levels which are vital for muscle and brain function, immune health, digestion, and mood. Best exercise tips? Periodise your training to make it more effective. Make a 12-week plan and commit to it! Attempt the ball slams, kettlebells, and battle ropes, and mix them with abs workouts such as plank variations to give you a balanced regime. Ask us to demonstrate any new exercises, as we are always happy to help. Favourite running route? My favourite running route in London is from Holland Park to Hyde Park, doing a lap or two and back to Holland Park where I started. It’s a peaceful run away from the hustle and bustle of London.

HOW’S THAT? Charlotta BillstrÜm meets cricket legend and fellow member Gladstone Small.

Photography by Krishna Balakrishnan

I N T E RV I E W

Hi Gladstone! We all know about your cricket success, but what are you working on right now? After 20 years of playing, I retired from professional cricket in 1999. I then worked with the Professional Cricket Association, the PCA, which is the players’ union that looks after all the professional players in terms of health, welfare, education and career advice. Becoming a cricket coach wasn't for me, but I still wanted to stay in the game, so I thought that the next best thing was to stay around the business of the game through the PCA. I was a full-time employee and board member for 10 years, and now I am currently an ambassador representing the PCA at various events involving their business partners and the game sponsors. I do give some time to charitable causes and in particular Prostate Cancer UK where I am an ambassador for their Stronger Knowing More campaign, aimed at highlighting the heightened dangers to Afro-Caribbean men of contracting the disease. Who does the PCA mainly focus on? The PCA acts mainly on behalf of all the current professional cricketers, both male and female, representing the players’ views across a wide range of issues. Of all the supporting services they provide, the Benevolent Fund makes many important contributions to those in real need of assistance.

Is it more difficult to keep in touch with the passion and love you felt when you started playing when reaching a certain level of success? That’s a really good question; I don’t think I have ever been asked that before. You still feel the love, and that's a key ingredient when you are required to be fully dedicated to whatever you are doing. Absolutely, you never lose the love, but it does get tested as there are pressures and expectations when competing at a high level. It’s a different kind of love, because you are now playing professionally so now it’s your job – you are being paid, and if you play poorly or don't show full commitment, the fans and media often remind you what is at stake. There are pressures involved both internally and externally, and you have to learn how to cope with those pressures. You have to keep learning and improving in order to succeed in any high performance environment. Does the PCA help those players who are starting to reach this kind of level? Yes, they are much more in tune with advising and supporting players now than when I started out. When I played for England, the main man was the captain – though we did have a manager/coach, and a physio, but that was it. Now there's a whole team of backroom input to rely upon that includes bowling, batting, various health and fitness specialists, masseurs and nutritionists. When I started, apart for the help from senior players in the team, it was mainly down to your own devices and your personal ambitions. Do you feel like the love you have for the sport is more unconditional now when you’re not playing professionally? I still love the game, and I'm keen to see it grow in popularity. It's somewhat different now with the shortened formats taking a stronger presence, than the more traditional style that I first grew up around. But the skill levels are all very admirable – especially the inventive strokes and outstanding fielding displays. I don’t like playing it anymore as it hurts like hell. Particularly because I was a fast bowler – and the body wasn’t designed to bowl a cricket ball with all the twisting and the jarring. When I meet up with old colleagues, the first thing we talk about are our injuries and the last medics we visited or what medications help best. But hey, if I had the chance I’d do it all over again.

What made you start playing cricket? I was born and grew up in Barbados where cricket is almost akin to religion. My grandad was the person who gave me the love of the game and as a little boy I was always playing wherever I could – any spare bit of land, the road, the beach – the only day I wasn’t allowed to play was Christmas day. I was 13 and was just getting the run of the island, going to school, playing cricket, having great friends when my parents, who lived here in the UK, dragged me to England on a cold, dreary September day forty odd years ago. Do you think cricket made the transition easier? Oh, certainly! Absolutely, if I hadn’t played cricket I would just have gone back to Barbados as soon as I could. Playing sport is such a wonderful natural way to make friends and mix socially. I played at school in Birmingham and I got picked up in the school system at 16 playing in the age group leagues and also for an old schoolboy’s club side. So when I was offered professional terms I just thought “oh well this isn’t too bad as this means that I’m going to play more cricket.” That was my main motivation then; I just wanted to play cricket, and I was very fortunate to have the ability to get at the top of the sport and perform there.

So was it all worth it? Absolutely. One of the best things with cricket is that I always got to travel. Cricket is one of the best things that England exported to the colonies, so touring abroad to Australia, India, New Zealand, the Caribbean, and Pakistan were indeed a highlight – and now South Africa and Sri Lanka. I not only met some wonderfully talented cricketers in my time playing, but have many great friends throughout the world. There's always a great camaraderie – even with the people you played against. We used to have some real battles, but outside the game we are all friends. Now I am a cricket consultant for ITC Sports Travel, and get to go on overseas tours watching England play. This coming winter, I will be going to Australia for the Ashes – that's always an eagerly awaited contest along with catching up with lots of friends. Do you have a favourite travel destination? They’re all very good, with their own special qualities for people, culture, scenery and entertainment – but the Caribbean is my favourite, with Barbados being a totally unbiased preference. What do you like most about Home House? I was first invited by a member about 10 years ago, but hadn't been back there until recently. It's a stylish club, but most importantly very chilled and relaxed – with a fabulous variety of food on the menus and no shortage of interesting members and guests.

Another Hole in One Champagne, talent, competition, idyllic grounds for networking and lush fairways; the Home House Open, yet again, delivered the perfect equilirium of all you would expect and more from a golf day of this calibre.

4

th July 2017 saw the return of the Home House Open at arguably one of the UK’s finest courses, set within the 300 acre Buckinghamshire parkland estate, Stoke Park. The 18-hole competition was held on the PGA Championship Colt-Alison Course in conjunction with b2b sports consultancy, Sportingclass, and hosted by Home House’s Managing Director, Andrew Richardson. The Open, held annually, continues to move from strength to strength since its conception in 2012 when just ten Home House golfing enthusiasts were involved. Now in its fifth year and with more competitors than ever before, over seventy golfers tested their skills (and patience) on the fairways, with the first prize being an all-inclusive golfing trip of a lifetime to Half Moon Bay in San Francisco to compete in The Sportingclass Industry Invitation Final in November 2017. With golf buggies stocked with Moët, champagne stands situated at the first tee and halfway house, as well as a Heineken tent en route, premium hospitality was served from start to finish. The competition was wrapped up with a drinks reception, barbeque, and prize giving on the terrace of the main house overlooking the surrounding spectacular grounds, the evening was completed by a dramatic sunset. First or last on the day, there were certainly points to be scored in terms of the networking opportunities presented over a shared passion for the sport and somewhat aided by the abundance of free flowing champagne! Richardson certainly capsulised the day in his three word summary, ‘Don’t drive home!’

Fall Into Winter Robin Dutt's Guide to Women's Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends Illustrations by Krishna Balakrishnan

I

t was once sagely said by one sadly missed A.A.Gill, that if you eschewed fashion you did so at your peril. Fleeting as it is, fashion is a huge industry. Its power, infinite - and not simply when it comes to clothing the body alone, but convincing the mind of the lure of change. So, whilst it is true, as polymath Jean Cocteau once opined that 'one must feel sorry for fashion, for she has such a short time to live,' it also should be remembered that he collaborated with couturier Elsa Schiaparelli, whose venerable house is currently enjoying a colourful renaissance, to produce sumptuous garments. There is more to fashion than meets the eye, hand, mind and especially, heart. Get ready for a most desirable season and ignore the protestations of the wallet...

38

Home House

TAILORING Savile Row design credentials are everywhere this season – the fashion houses of Paris, Milan, New York and of course, London itself were proud to borrow strident sartorial styling from this celebrated street, tracing its origins to around 1809. But the satisfying truth is that if one of today's tailors could teleport to the Georgian era with an example or two of twenty first century modes cut on the Row, that tailor would understand. This season, ladies' tailored garments show a more voluminous and soft-sculpted shape – some boasting asymmetric detailing as offered by Alexander McQueen or playful, quirky takes on tradition by Paul Smith who has, since he founded his empire some 40 years ago, created 'classics with a twist.'

Pure lines and signature buttoning by Dior and Chanel and others – reminiscent of, in part, that great talent, Romeo Gigli, flooded the catwalks. And it is all to the good that the ludicrous proportions of this summer's oversized, overdone, floaty numbers (and pajama suits) are a thing of the past. Vivienne Westwood's son, Joe Corre who set up and sold lingerie empire, Agent Provocateur, has created superb suiting with an urban swagger this season available from his East and West End shops of curiosities – A Child of the Jago. Expect to find suiting made in small batches with a very English feel, celebrating tweeds and fine wools. A chip off the venerable block? Perhaps, but also a very singular voice in style – on his own. Fluid meets structure with a definite nod to an elegantly tumbledown past...Charles Dickens' Artful Dodger springs to mind – and waits around the next dark corner. Celebrate a tighter, more formal look at Ralph Lauren whose perpetual strict blazer is never boring, but this season thrown open to show the play of components and colours beneath. It acts almost as a pair or quotation marks to a fizzy ensemble. Lauren it is who reminds of the eternal efficacy of a blazer (stick to black or of course, navy), that ally in the wardrobe. ANIMAL MAGIC OK. This has simply become an Autumn/Winter must as flowers are a Summer necessity when it comes to inspirations for designers. Roberto Cavalli, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana often feature animal prints (often leopard) in their collections and this season is no exception. Redolent of glamour and luxury or conversely, the standoffish socio-politicization of Rockerbilly or Punk, leopard in natural honey and tar tones or rose pinks, emerald greens or imperial purples feature hugely. And this print literally goes with everything from gowns to jeans. Genius design guru (and Metal Guru, come to that) has added a cool gilt serpent curling around the bottle of his latest XS fragrance ads – oh, and the sueded human hunk lurking in the shadows, too. Slither along, Poldark... SHINE ON Metallics are huge this season, whether smooth or crushed, silverflecked tweed or leather. Cara Delevingne set the tone earlier this year in a body contouring piece of shiny couture happily showing her curves. Metal reflects of course and is most seductive by candlelight. But in the words of that fab pop duo Sparks, spare a thought for the day when, 'the glaring sun should not inhibit us at all.' Forget cumbersome, glitter tiaras. Seek out Boy George's brother, Kevin (go on look him up) who might supply classic jackets emblazoned with glitter confetti motifs and Liberace candelabras in hi-voltage crystals. And when it comes to shine, accent jewellery is perfect to add sparkle to your outfit. Look at the brilliant layering of the sublime (and sublimely beautiful) Pippa Small, the mastery of Stephen Webster or the historical romance of the captivating Jessica Pass for inspirational emblematic ideas to complete your look, as well as a pointe finale.

LEATHER Sir Hardy Amies, Whitaker Malem, Gucci and Bally have all done sterling work to show that leather is not only for the feet but the entire body. Whipped up into anything from formal frock coats, corsets, jackets and indispensable trousers ( jean or formal cut) this season, leather is everywhere. But one has to say, it is not for everyone. Leather can be ceremoniously unforgiving. But push the boat out and choose your look, whether it’s Paris or Berlin. You know what I mean...Balmain or Bowie. But if you don't, as a second skin of the first principle, why not consider the charms of Jean-Claude Jitrois whose alarming elegance and currently, alarmingly futurist mannequins, provide inspiration? Not inexpensive but reassuringly costly. Tight is right, seems to be the mantra here. But then again, leather does give. In time and with enough wear. But if you can bear the thought of wearing second hand next to your first rate skin, pop along to Portobello Market on a Friday or Camden Market on a Sunday and be drowned in hide – vintage modes from £50 or so from Jean's regular stall in Portobello. A dab of hide food here and some vigorous polishing and you're ready to go. I bought a sublime purple safari jacket in leather from her with coffin-shaped pockets and a black 1940's Swedish border guard's leather coat from Tony – yes after a while you get to know all the dealers with such pleasure. I wonder who the soldier was. Don't you? This season, strike all reason. Be bold. Baby, it's going to be cold outside!

A Timely Revival Are you on the list? Corbett de Giacomo sits down with Don Cochrane to discuss Vertex, the watch brand that’s just as stylish as it is exclusive.

7/ GANNI Carlton Georgette Maxi Dress, £190. www.ganni.com

6 6/ POLO RALPH LAUREN Black Silk Necktie Blouse, £175 www.ralphlauren.com

“It’s good to be disruptive,” says Don Cochrane, the man behind the highly exclusive relaunch of Vertex Watches. Best known as the legendary watch brand on the wrists of British soldiers during the Second World War, Vertex originally debuted in 1916, helmed by none other than Claude Lyons, Cochrane’s greatgrandfather. We sat down for an afternoon at Home House with Cochrane to discuss the brand’s comeback, commemorated by the introduction of Vertex’s first new watch since 1972, the M100. This model is inspired by the original World War II navigation watch, now coveted by timepiece collectors and history buffs alike. Vertex was tapped by the British government as one of 12 watch brands selected to outfit the military during the war, aptly dubbed “The Dirty Dozen,” creating a rich legacy for the brand that Cochrane plans to keep intact. Enclosed in a sleek Pelican case, the new M100 boasts the same stunning authority as the military original despite its modern update, including a brushed steel case, box crystal glass, and a brilliant ‘Superlumanova’ dial. The Swiss-made model is outfitted with either a classic utility strap or a slick black leather strap that turns over to reveal a striking pop of crimson, a design feature chosen by Cochrane himself. While the brand’s stunning visual identity has definitely garnered attention, it is Cochrane’s organic sales model that has truly created major buzz. He’s not interested in retail, and he isn’t intimidated by big brands that base importance purely around the customer’s financial value to the brand. At the launch, Cochrane extended an invitation to purchase the M100 (£2,500) to an exclusive list of 60 people, who in turn may introduce five more people upon deciding to take up ownership. The original 60 were chosen because they each represent someone “you’d like to sit next to at dinner.” According to Cochrane, if you are looking to procure a Vertex, the only way in is to be invited, or to have already invested in the brand as an owner of the original “Dirty Dozen” timepiece. The strategy is designed to challenge the way people think about exclusivity and commercialism. “I wanted to create something where the brand was really based around the people, but at the same time there’s an innate value in being part of that community,” continues Cochrane, who intends to gradually expand the Vertex network and range of watches offered as a next step for the company. The brand’s welcome revival and ultra-elite status make Vertex a definite one to follow. www.vertex-watches.com

COCKTAIL MASTERCLASS Our bar supervisor Alexandru Cernatu shares a few of his favourite cocktails prepared at the House.

T

here are as many stories behind the origin of the word cocktail as there are behind the creation of the first Margarita or Martini. Traditionally, what was referred to as a cocktail was a mixture of spirits, sugar, water and bitters. However, these days ingredients usually found only in kitchens have begun to find their way into cocktail recipes. Utilising novel ingredients and often complex f lavours has helped bring this category of drinks to another level, thus creating the classic cocktail. Here at Home House we believe that every great evening starts with a great cocktail. Today there is no end to the ever growing list of cocktails being created and evolving worldwide. In turn, we too are proud of our cocktails that have developed a strong reputation, won a place on the menu and become signature cocktails of the House. Here are three of the best...

Home House

1. BLACK BISON Black Bison was created a few years ago, and quickly became one of the most popular cocktails on the House menu. The story goes that the head of a black bison was found above the entrance door of the Bison Bar, and thus inspired the name. Sweet, fruity and flavoursome, this cocktail is a must taste.

PREPARATION Mix all the ingredients in a Boston tin and shake vigorously with ice. Then double strain it into a sling glass over crushed ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and a blackberry. Finish with a dusting of icing sugar.

2 2. THE BARREL PUNCH There really isn’t much that we can say for a drink that speaks for itself! Combining fresh and exotic flavours, this is a cocktail that can be enjoyed on any occasion.

RECIPE

3. CHURCHILL’S FAVOURITE Winston Churchill was inordinately fond of alcoholic refreshments. Whisky was a daily tipple, and an essential feature of his drinking regime. This cocktail was created in his honour, and fast became popular for its complex and strong flavour. Churchill was famously known to have said “Always remember that I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me”. So cheers to that!

Culinary Adventures with Fabio Petrucci In three of his favourite, mouth-watering dishes, our Executive Head Chef, Fabio Petrucci, brings to life the smells and tastes from his travels taking in Japan, Korea and China. You will be inspired and left wanting to try these recipes for yourself.

Miso Pork Belly With Kimchi Cabbage This is a dish I created with my Korean friend Raon Lee when I was working in a private chalet in Switzerland. I was amazed by the flavour combinations from South Korea, which led me to travel and explore even more. Ingredients: 250g Pork belly 100g Soybean paste (Doenjang) Ssamjang (mild dipping sauce): 20g Soybean paste (Doenjang) 10g Chilli paste (Gochujang) 4g Leeks, chopped (use only the white parts) 2g Garlic, chopped 3g Sesame seeds, toasted 3ml Sesame oil White Kimchi (Baek Kimchi): *Kimchi must ferment for two weeks 500g Nappa Cabbage/Wombok (Baechu) 100g Rock salt 100g Radishes 15g Chestnuts, peeled 30g Carrots 50g Apples, peeled 5g Garlic 10g Ginger 30g Leeks (use only the white parts) 40g Fresh hot chilli peppers 10g Dried hot pepper seeds

Stock for making the Kimchi: 500g Cold water 80g Rice flour 2g Konbu/dried kelp (Dashima) 1 Dried shiitake mushroom 3g Dried anchovies 50g Radishes 8g Ginger Method: Coat the pork belly very generously with the soybean paste. You don’t need to season it with salt. There are two methods for cooking the pork belly. If you have a sous-vide machine, simply put the marinated pork belly into a sous-vide bag and seal it. It’s best to marinate the pork belly overnight but if you can’t, you need to marinate it for at least 7 hours. This will result in much more succulent and tender pork, as well as a great taste! Then cook it at 100°C for 2 hours. You can then simply cut the pork into perfect rectangles or 1cm thick slices, which is a very traditional way to eat it in South Korea. If you do not have a sous-vide machine, you can compromise by using cling film. Make sure you wrap the pork belly several times with cling film, otherwise all the marinade will leak out. Marinate it for the same amount of time, then put it in boiling water or a steamer (100°C) and cook it for 2 hours. For the Ssamjang, simply mix the ingredients together in a bowl. To make the White Kimchi, cut the Nappa cabbage into quarters and wash it. Drain

off any water and put some rock salt between every layer of the leaves. Place it in a large mixing bowl and put a heavy lid on top of it. Then wrap the whole thing in cling film. Leave this out at room temperature overnight or for at least 5 hours. Wash the cabbage three times in cold water. While you are waiting for the cabbage to be ready, you can prepare the rest of the ingredients for coating the inside of the cabbage. You need to chop all the ingredients (except the cabbage) into fine slices. Make sure they are all the same size. For the ‘stock’, start making it with the cold water. Add in the dried kelp, radishes (roughly chopped), ginger (roughly chopped) and the shiitake mushroom, and bring it all to a boil. Take out the kelp and add the dried anchovies. Remove the anchovies after 30 seconds. When the stock has reduced to two thirds, strain it and let it cool. Pour this stock into a pan and add in the rice flour. Cook it slowly. When it becomes sticky enough, leave it in a bowl and let it cool. (Here’s a tip, if you wish you can simplify this process in the following way: when you make the ‘stock’, just use the water and the rice flour.) After that, mix in the ingredients that you chopped into fine slices. Now put this mixture between every layer of the cabbage leaves, put it in a container and keep it in the fridge. You need to wait for the Kimchi to ferment, usually around two weeks. The reward will be the perfect accompaniment for the pork belly. I can most certainly guarantee this!

Wagyu Beef Tataki The tataki principle of quickly searing beef in a very hot pan gives a wonderful texture, taste, and colour contrast between the raw beef middle and the seared outside. The caramelisation gives it a lovely smokiness. I love serving this as a canapĂŠ. It is a quick dish to prepare but has a rich, complex flavour.

Method: For the sauce, warm the soy sauce and vinegar in a small saucepan, and then add the dried bonito flakes. Cool to room temperature, strain out the bonito flakes, and add the lime juice. Season the beef with a little salt and black pepper, and heat a non-stick pan. Sear each surface of the beef in the pan for five seconds,

ensuring all sides are completely seared and no red meat is visible. Heat the oil in a saucepan to 150 degrees and slowly deep fry the garlic slices until golden. Thinly slice the beef and arrange the slices on a flat serving dish. Garnish with chopped spring onions, garlic crisp, coriander cress, and the Ponzu sauce.

Ingredients: 100g Beef fillet, trimmed 5ml Olive oil 50g Garlic, sliced 1 bunch of spring onions Ponzu Sauce: 15ml Lime juice 30ml Mirin vinegar 20ml Rice vinegar 20ml Dark soy sauce 5g Bonito flakes Salt and pepper Coriander cress

Coconut Tapioca Pudding with Mango and Lime Mango Sago Pomelo and Khao Niao Mamuang are possibly my favourite summer Chinese and Thai desserts. Maybe it's because mango is one of my favourite fruits. The following recipe is a mixture of these two desserts for both the flavours and the ingredients. Ingredients: 60g Tapioca 2 Thai mangos 200ml Coconut milk 1/4 Vanilla bean, halved lengthwise with the seeds scraped out A pinch of salt 2 Kaffir lime leaves 1 Fresh lime

Method: Bring the coconut milk to a boil, and add the vanilla and the chopped lime leaves. Cover with cling film, and leave to rest until warm. Bring 1.5 litres of water to a boil and add in 150ml of cold water. Then add in the tapioca. Bring to a boil again, turn down to a medium heat, and cook without a lid for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Take off the heat, cover and let the tapioca soak for 10 minutes. After this, the tapioca is partially cooked. Drain and rinse the tapioca under running, cold water until it is cool. Bring another litre of water to a boil and add the drained tapioca. Bring to a boil again, take off the heat, cover, and soak for 5-7 minutes. Drain and rinse the fully cooked tapioca with running, cold water until

completely cooled, before adding the warm coconut milk infused with the kaffir lime leaves and vanilla. Serve the coconut tapioca pudding in glasses or serving dishes, and leave in the fridge to settle for about an hour. Dice your mango and add some lime juice. Then add the diced mango on to the top of the coconut milk and tapioca pudding. There you have it, a fabulous, three-course meal inspired by my travels. I hope you enjoy creating these dishes as much as I do! To enjoy more of Fabio’s culinary adventures, join him and our food and drink educator Alison Taffs at the monthly Home House Supper Club.

Glorious Gstaad We visit the luxurious Hotel Park Gstaad for a winter escape.

F

ramed by snow-capped mountains in one of the most lavish Alpine resort towns, Hotel Park Gstaad embodies all that is luxurious and laid back about the Swiss mountain lifestyle. Opened in 1910 as the Park Reuteler, it was the first five-star hotel to find its place in Gstaad. Since its inception, its original beauty has been upheld, yet the hotel continues to renovate and redecorate without losing its original sparkle. Its 100th anniversary was marked with a complete renovation of the spa and redecoration of the hotel by interior designer Federica Palacios, who aimed to combine the hotel’s heritage with a prestigious modern feel. To add some historical perspective to this timeless gem, past guests include Princess Grace of Monaco, Audrey Hepburn, and Aga Khan, who spent the entirety of World War II here with his family. Park Gstaad offers a wide range of accommodation; however, the showpiece is the glorious penthouse suite, the largest in the Swiss Alps. My Gstaad Chalet, a four-bedroom duplex of 400m 2 gives spectacular south facing views of the town and its picturesque mountain backdrop. Not impressed by the penthouse’s four en-suite black granite bathrooms? Perhaps the personal sauna, Turkish bath, gym, Jacuzzi, treatment room and hair salon will change your mind, not to mention the 24 hour butler service. If you’re interested in a more low-key visit, the Park has a range of different rooms and suites, all accompanied with spectacular views of either Gstaad’s mountains or forests. Even better, there is no need to feel left out of the penthouse’s amenities as the hotel has its own five-star spa. Bathe in the beautiful heated saltwater swimming pool, or indulge in one of the many wellbeing-oriented treatments available. At an altitude of 1,000 metres, Gstaad is within reach of over 220 kilometres of white-blanketed pistes

to cater to all your skiing needs. A five minute drive from Park Gstaad lies the Wasserngrat mountain, not known for its multitude of pistes but rather as the home of the extraordinary Eagle Club; a contender for one of the most expensive restaurants in the world. On the opposite end of the spectrum, about a 20 minute drive away, Saanenmoser is home to a variety of pistes,

ranging from leisurely runs to challenging off-piste. If skiing isn’t your cup of tea, other activities include dog sleigh rides, winter biking, and moonlit cross-country skiing. The hotel even has its own ice rink during the winter months, and there is also the opportunity to brush up on your golfing skills with the hotel’s indoor golf club and simulator. Fine dining found at Park Gstaad encapsulates a range of cuisines to give your stay a variety of dining choices. Let Chef Agustin Brañas take you on an Argentinian adventure at Chubut, named appropriately after

the Patagonian province in Argentina, who’s fiery and windy landscape inspired the rustic, well fragranced, and seasoned meat-infused menu for Chubut Food & Fire. If you’re looking for something closer to home, Chef Axel Rüdlin embodies contemporary Mediterranean cuisine with an imaginative twist in the Park’s newest restaurant, Avenue Montagne. Finally, your Swiss experience would not be complete without a taste of authentic Swiss cosiness and cuisine combined. Chalet Waldhuus, hidden away in the hotel’s garden, provides a range of local specialities including a vast selection of fondues. Altogether, Park Gstaad provides none other than an exceptional five-star Swiss experience for its guests. Even those who are more inclined to holiday in summer can enjoy the transcendent views of flowerfilled mountains, bask in the heaven of the outdoor pool, and use the hotel’s partner, Gstaad Saanenland’s golf course. The Park Gstaad is the ultimate way to engage in the life of the upmarket melange of locals and seasonal visitors of Gstaad. It truly identifies with the town’s own adopted motto, used by those who escape from everyday life to their getaway in the clouds, ‘Come up, slow down’. Azzy Asghar discovers the Alpine dream at W Verbier.

I

t hadn’t occurred to me until I actually sat down and thought about it – but I’ve been lucky enough to visit about 9 W hotels – NYC, Miami, Barcelona, London, Paris, Amsterdam, and now Verbier – perhaps the pick of an amazing bunch! Possibly the finest of the W Hotels, W Verbier is their first stunningly modern, sleek ski resort nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, offering the perfect alpine escape. Classic, chalet-style elements, such as exposed timber and natural stone, mix with expansive glass windows and polished marble to create spaces of luxury, set within a beautiful, mountainous landscape. Structured as a ski-in/ski-out resort, the hotel is conveniently located at the base of the mountain in the Medran area, poised as an ideal spot for any alpine adventure. Their “mountain concierge” offers skiing and snowboarding private lessons, group adult lessons, child lessons, and gear to rent. For more daring guests, packages also include heli-skiing, parachute jumping, and personal mountain guides for exploring the vast skiing terrain. And what a terrain! Whether you are a very eager amateur like me, or a seasoned skier this resort has everything. The experience and luxury synonymous with Verbier is not limited to the W. It is exemplified in the service at all the amazing boutiques and restaurants in this quaint but bustling little and thriving resort. We had organised to rent skis from the European Snowsport Verbier. The owner – Julian – a transplanted Brit who now considers himself part Swiss – greeted us personally, and made us feel truly welcome. Despite our naivety, he and his team were patient and super helpful in explaining the best types of skis and boots, and despite my trying on numerous pairs to ensure comfort they never flinched in bringing out 5-6 pairs until I was completely happy. Julian had also organised two instructors – one skiing and one snowboarder

62

for my son Alexander – they were amazing! Despite both having trained and represented the nations Swiss team they showed great passion and patience in helping us complete novices. It is an obvious axiom that if you do something you enjoy it does not feel like work and thus it was with our fabulous instructors! The mountains are some of the most beautiful in the world and the slopes are designed so that even beginner skiers like me can take a lift to the very top of the alps and enjoy ‘baby slopes’ but with breathtaking views! Slopes that cater to all levels and merge effortlessly into other slopes so you could ski uninterrupted for hours on end.

Back at the resort, the spacious, vibrant rooms are filled with floor-to-ceiling windows, luxurious beds, and creative lighting. Complementing the design is a stylish mix of faux-fur blankets, leather furniture and trendy décor in Swiss white and reds. Clear gas fireplaces divide bed and bathrooms and light-washed wooden balconies display breathtaking panoramic views. Their most prestigious E-Wow suite maximizes the experience, detailed with elegant décor throughout airy living areas and complete with a rotating bed, lofted bar and personal sauna. Additionally, the resort offers a wellness spa, fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, and destination restaurants and bars. The spa, AWAY, invites guests to unwind and recharge in an elegant, calming atmosphere equipped with Hamman, a Jacuzzi, saunas and nine treatment rooms. Their skilled, professional treatments are an excellent way to detox, soothe and reinvigorate active muscles and refresh your skin. Services include aromatherapy, massages, and beauty appointments. These luxurious features guarantee a spectacular stay; however, the true highlight of the W Verbier lies amongst the six different options of varying cuisines. In particular, helmed by two Michelin Star Chef Sergi Arola, Eat-Hola Tapas Bar is renowned for its legendary flavours served in a modernised Spanish-style setting. Eat-Hola boasts an impressive menu of signature tapas, all prepared in an open air kitchen for guests observation. The sommelier pairs a wine list that complements the menu, and the experience is boosted further by its engaging, fun atmosphere. A particularly exceptional aspect of the W Verbier’s cuisine is their stimulating gastronomic dinners. As part of their Haute Cuisine 2017 experience, these dinners are exclusive opportunities to discover and engage with world-renowned chefs, and taste their exquisite courses. The 5 Senses’ Dinner with chefs Sergi Arola, Jacques Pourcel, Alain Caron, Thierry Drapeau and Stéphane Bonnat unfolds as the chefs choose one of the five senses and create dishes that correspond to each; sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste. The evening presents a truly special way of experiencing the finest of the gastronomic world, surrounded by Verbier’s stunning atmosphere. For drinks, Off Piste, an al fresco après-ski bar with expertly mixed cocktails, is situated directly off the slopes for ideal accessibility. Fun beats and vibrant décor make Off Piste a necessary stop to relax and reenergize after an active day on the mountain. A final, memorable indulgence at W Verbier is discovered at the W Kitchen, serving traditional Swiss cuisine twisted with a modern touch. For the curious diner, this experience promises daring gourmet dishes exemplifying local, seasonal ingredients presented in an artfully modern setting. Collectively, the W Verbier’s luxurious amenities, sensational cuisine, enjoyable activities and stylish, blissful living spaces create an exceptional resort experience. Friendly staff with confident expertise and attentive service add to the countless reasons why W Verbier is quite simply the only choice for a visit to Verbier. Austrian Adventure Christina Raptis skis where skiing was ‘invented’ and enjoys traditional Austrian hospitality at Hotel Gotthard in Lech Am Arlberg.

A

lpine adventure meets traditionally charming Austrian hospitality at the Gotthard Hotel of Lech Am Alberg in the Austrian Alps. Nature-lovers and winter-sport enthusiasts alike luxuriate at Gotthard after exploring the expansive - but exclusive - slopes of Lech, (one of the preferred holiday destinations of the late Princess Diana), connected via an impressive lift network to over 350 kilometres of traversable snow. Gotthard, with its mix of modern and traditional rooms, generous amenities, and warm staff ensures complete après-ski restoration so guests can make the most of their alpine adventures. Aside from royal visitors, the Lech resort is home to multiple winter Olympic athletes who prize the dynamic trails, obstacles for free-style snowboarding and the free-riding opportunities made possible by 200 kilometres of high-altitude, deep-snow terrain. Beginners also have plenty of snow to cover, as do those who would prefer hiking, ice-skating, tobogganing or simply enjoying the beauty of the landscape and villages. With the construction of the new Flexenbaum cableway in the 2016/17 season, winter-sport enthusiasts can access all the skiing villages in the Alberg region, without leaving the mountains. Opportunities for dynamic skiing, snowboarding and winter-adventuring are virtually endless. Luckily, adventurers can relax and unwind at the Gotthard after a long day on the slopes. Owned and operated by the Walch family, now in its third generation, Gotthard combines 4-star luxury with the comfort, intimacy and personalised hospitality of a traditional Austrian bed and breakfast. Owners, and husband and wife Nicole and Clemens, make you feel welcome at all times and ensure your stay is a truly authentic Austrian experience. Skiing is only part of the holiday as any enthusiast will tell you and the après-ski element is as much fun and a vital element to the ski-holiday experience. That being said – there is no better

64

night in Austria, perhaps the Alps, than one spent in the company of Clemens Walch, as he jokes and performs hilarious musical numbers for his guests in a century old Austrian house atop the mountains overlooking the city below. Austrians know how to après-ski like no one else and the Walch families’ enthusiastic hospitality gives visitors a wonderful taste of genuine Austrian ski culture. The Gotthard makes visitors at home (or better) with its invested service and quality amenities. Skiers and boarders can defrost with a hot-stone massage or visit the sauna in the generously-equipped wellness centre. Guests can also refresh with a dip in the indoor pool or workout in the fitness room. The hotel staff believe in providing flexible, quality service so that visitors can tailor-make their stay to match their ideal winter holiday. When all the day’s exertions inevitably work up an appetite, Gotthard offers guests a delicious and diverse choice of cuisine. At the newly renovated Gotthard Stube Restaurant, guests can choose a three or four course menu of traditional Austrian, international or vegetarian cuisine. Indulge in fine fish dishes, local veal with vegetables, traditional cheese dumplings, or emperor pancakes to name just a few delectable offerings. For an À La Carte experience,

guests can head to The Lecher Stube where classic Austrian cuisine and international dishes are made using local, sustainable ingredients from Gotthard’s own agricultural areas and the local waters and forests of the region. For a hearty breakfast, pick up fresh Austrian breads and pastries from the in-house bakery, which supplies the whole town with fresh bread daily. Gotthard provides sustenance for hungry skiers while satisfying gourmets looking for a taste of Austrian culture. This is all provided in cosy, luxurious spaces with views of the terrace, grounds and surrounding mountains. After a delicious dinner, and maybe a cocktail or two, guests can retire in the sumptuous comfort of the luxurious rooms, which have lovely garden views, private terraces and spacious interiors. Each room is designed for optimal comfort so guests can count on a restorative night’s sleep before they venture back out onto the slopes. Lech is also steeped in history, as skiing was literally invented on the Austrian slopes. At the turn of the 20th century, Victor Sohm, a man from a nearby town, was the first to strap wooden planks to his feet and scale a Lech mountain. Later, his pupil Hannes Schneider opened the first ski school in the area. The legendary ski resorts certainly make the area special for winter-athletes, but they have enough charm and possibility to entice every kind of winter holiday-maker. After exploring Lech a stop at Schneggerai for lunch is a must. Located right at the bottom of the slopes it’s the ideal place to relax and fuel up with Austrian delicacies. Make sure you try the Käsespätzle – a cheesy pasta dish, which is an Austrain take on mac and cheese, it’s truly heaven. Gotthard and the Lech ski slopes have a lot to offer winter travellers, but there is plenty for summer vacationers to do as well – especially nature-lovers looking to enjoy Alberg’s soaring mountains, clear air and bright skies. Hiking, fly-fishing, golfing and motorbiking around the sunny valleys become chief recreation when the powder melts. A short trip to the town of Stuben am Arlberg is a great way to spend the morning enjoying the views whilst sampling Vorarlberger Riebel – a regional polenta dish served at FuxBau Restaurant and Bar. The splendour of the Alps and charming Austrian culture make Lech am Alberg and its surrounding towns wonderful to visit any time of year, with the Hotel Gotthard remaining open for guests yearning for a luxurious home away from home to retire to between adventures.

40 Central Park South, NY

1 West 67th Street, NY

Bobby Van’s Steakhouse has earned its place as a venerable New York institution, thanks in part to a continued commitment to cooking techniques, perfected years ago by the founding fathers of New York steakhouse cuisine. Five years ago, in the historically landmarked Hotel des Artistes at 1 West 67th Street, Gianfranco Sorrentino and his wife Paula Bolla Sorrentino, along with Partner Chef Vito Gnazzo, opened The Leopard at des Artistes. The opening included a floor-to-ceiling renovation of the existing space, and a complete restoration of the original, famed Howard Chandler Christy murals that adorn its walls. The restaurant boasts a diverse menu that finds its roots in the area once known as The Kingdom of Two Sicilies of the mid-1800s, and the culinary traditions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria, Apulia, Sardinia, and of course, Sicily. www.theleopardnyc.com

A Very Private Jet Christina Raptis escapes to Mallorca with Stratajet.

I

magine being able to grab a private jet and escape to your favourite holiday destination in the blink of an eye. Of course there are now many companies that offer this type of service, but being epicureans and always seeking out something a little more special we discovered Stratajet – a new platform for instantly searching, comparing and booking private jets. And that is the key – private! Unlike other ‘competitors’ Stratajet has no timetables for you to adhere to nor lurkers hopping onto ‘your’ flight. The private jet is private to you! There as and when you say – to wherever you desire – and that truly is how it should be done! Stratajet was founded in 2011 by Jonny Nicol, with the vision to disrupt the typically traditional private aviation industry and change the way people travel. Jonny left the British Armed Forces and became a serial entrepreneur and computer scientist. He was struck by the archaic and fragmented nature of private aviation, and thus set out to make the industry more accessible - Stratajet was the result. Stratajet launched in 2016 and went live across 44 countries, offering customers the option to search and book private jets at the click of a button. The technology behind the search engine took over five years to develop, all because of the complexity of calculating the price of a private jet. What does it cost then, you might ask? The average booking made on the Stratajet app costs £6,000. The platform has access to over 2,100 airfields across Europe, whereas commercial f lights only land at around 500 of these, giving customers even more

opportunities to discover the world. We were invited to ride along with Stratajet on a Bombardier Learjet 75 to Mallorca; a first class flight to a first class destination. After a smooth and highly comfortable flight, we arrived at the Jumeriah Port Sóller Spa and Hotel just in time to enjoy a delicious lunch at Cap Roig overlooking the sea, one of the hotel’s five restaurants. This was followed by a sunset boat trip around the island – the perfect way to explore the many sides of Majorcan nature. At night we dined at Es Fanals, a restaurant specialising in local cuisine and tapas, overlooking a spectacular ocean view – a perfect backdrop to a perfect dinner. After a day full of activities, we happily retreated to our luxurious suites. The Jumeriah Port Sóller is located at one side of the bay of Port Sóller, a quaint village stretching along a 2 km long beach promenade. A picturesque tram runs a couple of times an hour during the high season, transporting passengers the short distance to the city of Sóller. Wander around and look inside the beautiful cathedral, or cool yourself down with an orange ice cream made from locally grown oranges at Sa Fabrica de Gelats. The Jumeriah offers a wide selection of activities – all to make sure that guests have the best possible experience of the island. From walking and wine tours, to private helicopter tours over the island, or a romantic dinner under the stars; the guests comfort and desires are in the highest interest of the Jumeriah. After yet another delicious lunch at the sunsoaked terrace at Cap Roig, our short stay had come

Port Sóller, Mallorca to an end, but instead of dreading the flight back we were quite excited for the easy access and luxuries our private jet was awaiting us with. Travelling internationally has never seemed so smooth and easy; the entire world is accessible by just a few clicks (or rather, taps) on your smartphone. We made ourselves comfortable in our spacious seats, and enjoyed the last few hours of our vacation before landing on English ground again. So, if you’re after a truly private and exclusive option when booking your next flight – the only app you’ll ever need and the only one that offers a private jet literally at your fingertips is Stratajet! Smooth marble fireplaces, tucked into inviting private corners of the dark-wood library, are evocative of an intimate boutique hotel. The location and provenance of the building is key. ONE TO WATCH... This October, Saatchi Gallery will feature Oh Myung Hee’s latest exhibition, Metamorphosis: A Journey of Transformation. The exhibition is sponsored by Nexan Tire and Woori Bank, and is curated by Tatiana Palinkasev and Eva McGaw. The central themes of the exhibitions are change, renewal, and the constantly changing relationship between past and future. Hee’s art both celebrates her Korean heritage and the historical and traditional values, and criticises it from the perspective of the modern woman. Central themes of Hee’s art are spiritual and physical freedom, usually represented by falling petals, flying scarves and birds. Her methods include both Eastern and Western methods, using both lacquer – a centuries old Oriental technique – and oil pigments, experimenting with the limits of lacquer painting. By combining these different techniques, her art becomes truly personal and unique. Art critic and SAN Museum director Gwangsu Oh describes her art as the place where “the current and past subtly overlap, bringing the dimension of time into space, to mix reality and memory”. The exhibition will incorporate both interactive and futuristic elements, as well as hanging pieces, allowing spectators to both observe and take part in the exhibitions, resulting in a wider spectrum of impressions. Metamorphosis: A Journey of Transformation will be displayed at the Saatchi Gallery between the 9th and 18th of October 2017.

BUSINESS ACCELERATOR Christina Raptis speaks to CEO and author Daniel Priestley.

D

aniel Priestley arrived in the UK with little more than a suitcase and a credit card in 2006, to launch the London division of his Australian event marketing company. His first business meeting was at Home House, and it must have been a good way to begin. Now, 11 years later, he has offices in the UK, USA, Singapore, and Australia, running what is regarded as one of the world’s leading business accelerators. Aside from being the CEO of Dent Global, Daniel is also the author of 4 best-selling books on entrepreneurship, and a long-standing Home House member.

in your job. With that said, you’ll probably also never be able to go back to a job once you’ve tasted the potential of being in business. What is the best advice someone has ever given you in business? "Income follows assets - if you want more rent you need more houses, if you want more profit, you need more business assets”. Prior to this piece of advice, I had built my businesses as little more than sales and marketing engines. I focused on brokering the value of others, rather than building my own business assets like brand, products, systems, culture and intellectual property. When I began to focus on building digital assets especially, we were able to scale and achieve a high valuation. I have heard about your 7-11-4 principle, would you like to explain it a bit more in detail? It stands for “7 hours, 11 interactions, 4 locations”. There’s research by Google into bonding and buying behaviour that suggests people require 11 interactions with a brand before they feel ready to buy. This is backed up with other research that talks about bonding chemicals being released as you spend time (7hrs) with a person, or visit four locations with them. In this digital age, every brand must be ready for customers to interact about 11 times, across four platforms for up to seven hours before buying. Most businesses are not prepared for this “content gorging” behaviour, and lose business to rivals who are. Can your principles be applied to smaller businesses as well? My day job is working with smaller businesses that want to punch above their weight, or disrupt the status quo. Everything I talk about is road-tested with small entrepreneurial teams with tight budgets. Occasionally we work with larger companies who want to adopt a more entrepreneurial mind-set, but they are rare.

Daniel Priestley Hi Daniel, what is the most important thing to keep in mind when starting a business? Entrepreneurial gravity – the force that wants to keep your business small, stagnating and unprofitable – is a real thing. Only through remarkable attention to design and detail, combined with hard graft, can you defy this force. Over 75% of all businesses will never hire a single employee, and less than 4% will ever hit £1M+ in revenue. There’s no entitlement to success in business. If you’re starting a business, you’re entering a world where the odds are against you making more money – or having more fun than you do

What is the difference between accelerating smaller businesses and bigger ones? Smaller businesses have the advantage of being nimble and having low overheads. They also have the advantage of being hard to quantify when getting investment funding. Bigger businesses have an existing ecosystem of assets; they have vast resources and teams of talented people. A bigger business has the disadvantage of being stuck in a rhythm of doing things a certain way, and taking much longer to transform. The whole leadership team has to buy in to the idea that change is coming, and you either disrupt yourself or you get blindsided by someone else. What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur? I often talk at length with entrepreneurs about the difficult phase of growth between 12 and 50 people - “crossing the desert”. This is where there is the most strain on culture, funding and systems. The business often goes from being a fun, dynamic boutique that’s making money to an unholy, stress-producing mess that will need to grow-up fast or fall back. My advice to businesses approaching this phase is to do a lot of preparation before going beyond 12 employees, and get some good mentors around you. (continued overleaf )

Daniel Priestley speaking at The Key Person of Influence Conference in London.

What is your latest book about? The latest book “24 Assets” is about scaling a business through digital assets and achieving high-performance with relatively small teams. It began with a fascination into companies that have extraordinarily high “revenue-per-employee”. I discovered that the conventional wisdom about revenue-per-employee being linked to productivity of the workforce is wrong. It had a lot more to do with things like media, awards, defensible intellectual property and access to cheaper capital. The book looks at 24 ways a company can invest into digital systems, media, platforms, software, or documents that will make expansion much less stressful, and create an uplift in revenue-per-employee.

You have been involved with raising money for charities – can you tell us more? I’d like to think there’s a domino effect of what we do, far greater than building great businesses - my passion is to see entrepreneurial teams focused on solving the world’s most meaningful problems. From the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, we have always selected charities to support financially and strategically. In the last five years we’ve raised £450K for various causes, and we’ve had a dozen social impact CEOs take part in our accelerators pro-bono. Beyond that, we’ve encouraged thousands of our entrepreneurs to align to one of the United Nations Global Goals, and then track their giving impacts using "Buy 1 Give 1" (B1G1.org). What do you enjoy most about Home House? I love that for over 150 years, it’s had a rich history of “work hard, play hard”. The original owner seems to have been a real character who knew how to bring people together for business and for fun. I love that I can have a serious meeting, a long lunch, a lubricated dinner, or even dance the night away. The versatility of the place, combined with the location, is remarkable. Do you have a favourite room in the house? Tough question! It’s always a treat to spend the night, so I could say the best room is one of the suites. Then again, I enjoy dinners in the Octagon Dining Room, I have a “spot” by the window in the Bison Bar, and the chill-out room next to the sauna is also nice for a 10 minute meditation.

Jeep

Cherokee Compass 4x4 Ronan Cliford and Tibor Nagyhazi take turns at the wheel of the fabulous new Jeep Cherokee Compass.

T

he invite to test drive the all-new Jeep compass dropped into my mailbox – added incentive, as if we needed one, was that the launch would be through the bustling city, and also rolling countryside of Lisbon, Portugal. Passport, sunglasses, camera and driving gloves at the ready. The launch was hosted at the Sheraton Lisboa, a stunning hotel where visitors can enjoy sweeping views over the picturesque city of Lisbon, from a panoramic rooftop bar. Jeep had pulled out all the stops: from a spectacular dinner with authentic Portuguese cuisine at 1300 Taberna Restaurant, then dessert – with the icing being a test drive of the all new Jeep Compass. As is the case with most press launches – a carefully designed pre-determined route across all manner of terrains was chosen to show how the Jeep handles any given topography. We began through the astonishing Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, here the sunroof of the Jeep Compass erases the line between inside and outside, and the experience of driving through the mountains of Lisbon is breathtaking. The Compass’ extra headroom contributes to the light and spacious feel. Driving the Compass evokes a sense of freedom. Whether it is gliding smoothly along paved roads, winding gracefully through tight curves, or navigating

rocky landscapes the precise steering allows drivers to feel at ease – no matter the terrain. To satisfy demand and needs of all customers, the model includes four different engine configurations, including the off-road Trailhawk for 4x4 capabilities. Furthermore, the Jeep Active Drive Low function has a 20:1 crawl ratio and five modes for Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud and Rock terrain. These features set the all-new Jeep at the top of the line for performance on any surface, in any weather condition. The efficient 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir 2 engine provides the driver with a powerful driving experience, without compromising economic fuel consumption. The sleek exterior design of the SUV shows clear brand awareness, and is complete with its unmistakable signature design; the trapezoidal wheel arches and distinctive front grille, setting the brand apart from other makers’ cookie-cutter designs. It is available in eleven different tones, including a Spitfire Orange, Laser Blue Pearl and Olive Green. The front headlamps options feature a daytime LED lighting strip, and a main projector beam turning on automatically when night falls for increased visibility and safety. The Compass as also equipped with an Electronic Stability Control, integrating the antilock brakes and traction control system ensuring the driver of a safe and stable

driving experience. For increased safety, the Compass also features a blind spot monitoring sensor, optimising safe lane changes. This shows that the Jeep Compass is a perfect hybrid between an off road and city car. The interior of the Jeep Compass reflects the contemporary and sleek design of the exterior, sparing no expenses when it comes to aesthetics and comfort. With its supporting, polished leather-trimmed seats and perfectly positioned pedals, the Compass provides the driver with both a highly luxurious and comfortable driving experience. It features an impressive array of the latest technology: an 8.4 inch screen displays any information the driver may require, and lets you connect your smartphone to either AppleCar Play or Andriod Auto. The stereo is Bluetooth connected and the quality of the sound is absolutely astonishing. The original general purpose vehicle has proven itself to be an all-purpose vehicle. The Jeep Compass is an all-around excellent car, whether you want to take your family on vacation, just go shopping, or pretend to be Lewis Hamilton taking tight curves at high speed – then this is the car for you. www.jeep.co.uk/compass

ASTONishing DB11 Azzy Asghar test dives the latest ʽhead-turnerʼ from Aston Martin.

I

often joke with my friends that I am luckier than James Bond, because I am fortunate enough to actually own an Aston Martin, whereas his, of course, is the property of Her Majesty’s government. Just for clarity – and not showing-off at all – mine is a beautiful charcoal grey V8 Vantage, with all the Prodrive extras. To list all of them would take up this entire article, so I will only mention a handful: it has upgraded wheels, brakes, exhausts, suspension, carbon-fibre, a state-of-the-art navigation system, and TV. Readers who have seen the movie Spectre – and who could escape all the interest the car’s release generated – you’ll know that 007’s latest company car is the phenomenally beautiful and extremely capable Aston Martin DB10. For those of you following the chronology, the DB11 is the replacement for the DB9 – as the DB10 moniker was used exclusively for the very, very limited edition run of cars driven by Mr. Bond in the Spectre. Thus we awaited delivery of a beautiful DB11. It has an astonishing 600 horsepower engine, generating a power at 6,500 rpm, and 516 pound-feet torque from 1,500 rpm. If given the chance on a race track (or even some stretches on the Autobahn) the Aston Martin DB11 can reach a maximum speed of 200 mph in 3.9 seconds. For everyday-driving, the engine dials back to a more humane sixcylinder power. As a motoring journalist I am always driving some really exciting and powerful cars – but in anticipation of the DB11 arriving, I was literally like the proverbial child in a sweet shop – full of excitement, and unable to control my happiness as it was delivered and driven down my quiet residential street in Fulham, it was unmistakeable

from a few 100 metres away, with the daytime running lights, the perfectly shaped lines of the car, and – of course – the signature grill. To the neighbours’ relief, the Sports Exhaust even comes with a “silencer” – à la 007’s PPK/S sidearm – to quiet the engine's noise level when necessary. But don’t think that the DB11 won’t make itself heard when given the chance! The V12 engine is, for the first time in Aston Martin's history, connected to two turbo charges that help the 5.2 liter achieve greater fuel economy and low-end torque, while still maintaining a goose bump-giving roar. My DB11 is, you could say, improved on even Mr. Bond’s car. “It is the most important car in the firm’s 103-year history,” says Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer. Just as you would expect from Aston Martin, the new car is truly elegant and beautiful. Unlike its Italian counterparts – who usually prefer angular lines – the Aston has soft edges, which gives it a sleek and poised look. The DB11 is as luxurious on the outside as it is inside. The interior is made of climate-conscious natural materials, and can be tailor-made to suit your personal taste, all thanks to a wide-ranged colour palette. As a cherry on this already cherry-topped sundae of a car, Bang & Olufsen has provided the DB11 with an impeccable and unbeatable sound system. I have driven every supercar on the road, and I know from personal experience that you get more admiring and approval nods in an Aston than any other brand. None of the disapproving or jealous rich-brat glares! No-one would dare, because who knows; maybe it’s the man with a license to kill who’s sitting behind the wheel… www.astonmartin.com

VERVE RALLY 2017 We speak to Home House member Darshana Ubl, founder of Verve Rally, about why she decided to create one of the most prestigious rally’s in Europe and her love of the House.

Can you tell us about the route you selected for this year’s Verve Rally? Verve Rally is a grand tour across Europe. It is not a race, but a holiday on wheels, which has certain sections specifically designed so that you can feel the wheel. It appeals to car enthusiasts, as well as those looking to do something different and unique when it comes to their holidays.

The routes range from four to nine days, and are designed to maximise fun on the road and at our beautiful locations. For 2018, we are putting together a few interesting routes across Europe. Our last route in July, took us from London to some exquisite palaces and châteaux in France including Chantilly and Versailles. Other highlights included VIP Room Paris, Claude Monet’s gardens, and a delightful selection of D-roads in the beautiful French countryside. In September, we have a 9-day route where we visit Reims (Champagne capital), Cannes, Monaco (Monte Carlo Casino), Lake Como, Swiss Alps, Lucerne, Frankfurt and Bruges, before heading back to London. It is a perfect blend of adventure and fun, with downtime for relaxation as we truck the cars for a certain section, so that Ververs can connect and enjoy mingling with one another. What were this year's highlights for you personally? Verve Rally attracts driven (pardon the pun), yet easygoing people ready to explore new sights and have a jolly good time. Personally, my highlight is the fun people have on the journey together, and the connections they make for life. Research shows that you need to meet someone three times in a short amount of time for him or her to know you, like you, and trust you. Verve Rally presents the backdrop for wonderful new relationships to be fostered and forged.

Verve Rally Founder Darshana Ubl

Can you explain what it is like being a female entrepreneur in the luxury motorcar sector? I love the reaction when I tell people what I do. Some look confused, some surprised, and many find it very interesting having a female lead in what is traditionally a male-led sport. It may seem unconventional to a few, yet for me it is exciting and interesting. I’ve enjoyed doing things differently in everything that I undertake. I was recently invited to deliver a keynote at the Planes, Trains and Automobiles event hosted by the Columbia University alumni. The

feedback they received was that many women were inspired to become leaders, and follow their dreams no matter how unconventional they may be. I see this as making a positive impact, and I would encourage women if that is what their heart desired. “Everyone dies, but not everyone truly lives!”. Having said the above, Verve is my brainchild, however, I do share the spotlight with my male co-founder, who is also instrumental in its growth. Why did you select Home House to start this year's Verve Rally from? They say home is where the heart is. I have a few homes around the world, but Home House is truly my home away from my not-too-far-London home. It’s a great place to entertain friends, relax over a few drinks, and let your hair down. Home House is unique with its period charm, accessible bedrooms for the rally goers to spend the night in before they set off in the morning, with friendly staff who are ready to serve a scrumptious breakfast in the morning. Our guests feel looked after. There is also an element of fun involved. For instance, at our last rally kick off, the Pink Bear (as seen in the Gloucester Lounge) from Laup Studios came to wish us ‘bon voyage’. What are your favourite aspects of the House? It’s hard to choose between the uniqueness of the venue, the elegant staircase, the feature rooms, the hospitable staff, the restaurants, and garden in the summer – I love it all. I truly feel ‘at home’, and it’s a great place for me to relax and unwind; whether it is over a game of backgammon or a cheeky mid-week drink. Can you tell us more information about your upcoming events? Our 2018 routes will unveil soon on our website www.ververally.com. If you have a route suggestion or would like to join us for a grand tour, please do get in touch via hello@ververally.com.

From Cannes to London Meet our very own Party Planner to the stars – Geraldine Gratien.

How did you get into event planning? Event planning was not my first career choice; I studied medicine for two years after high school in France, but was unfortunate to just miss out on a place at university (possibly owing to all of the parties I was throwing for the medical students). I loved to travel, so I decided to study Tourism Management at university instead. Following my degree, I undertook a Master of Marketing and Communications in Paris, and had to work full time to support my studies. In the evenings, I worked as a chief hostess in a famous restaurant and nightclub called Man Ray. The owners included Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, John Malkovich and Mick Hucknall. I ended up hosting a lot of high profile events, such as the launch of Mariah Carey’s album, the film premiere of Aviator and a private showcase for Alicia Keys to name a few. After undertaking my internship at Man Ray in the events and marketing department, I worked as a marketing manager for a premium restaurant and nightclub on the Champs Elysées, before deciding to return to my beloved Cannes. Can you tell us about your party planning experiences in Cannes? When I returned to Cannes, I started working as an events and marketing manager for a high-end bar, and organised private events for all sorts of occasions and clients. Cannes is particularly busy during the congresses such as MIPIM, Cannes Film Festival or Cannes Lions Festival. I used to receive a lot of requests to help businesses organise events during these times, so I decided to open my own agency planning private parties for international brands including Spotify, Redken, L'Oreal and Chivas. What were your highlights of working in the South of France? I particularly remember my first event with Spotify, we had a private showcase of John Legend and it was amazing! He was such a nice and easy-going person, not to mention an incredible artist. There were so many unbelievable moments that I can’t remember all of them, but I had the pleasure to meet a lot of celebrities such as Will.i.am, Cate Blanchett, Charlize Theron, Christoph Waltz, Nicole Kidman, and Marion Cotillard amongst others. What attracted you to the bright lights of London? Spotify’s event department in London offered me a position to come and work with them and I thought, why not? London is an amazing city with a very positive energy and many opportunities. How long have you been working at Home House? About three years now and I still enjoy it as I always have the opportunity to bring new ideas to the table. What are your top tips when planning a party? I’m a perfectionist so I always check every detail at least five times. I like to seek feedback from members and colleagues to enhance my ideas and plans. My priority is to ensure guests will have an amazing time so they come first, second and last in the planning process. I pay close attention to every single detail until it’s exactly as I imagine, and always anticipate every kind of issue.

What have been your favourite party moments at Home House? There are so many, but I would have to say the new members’ parties that I devised in House 21, such as the Après Ski and Beach parties. I also developed the new ‘Music is the Answer’ party nights, featuring renowned DJs in House 21 from Thursday to Saturday. I am very proud of the following parties: • Bad idea it’s Thursday, But I like bad Ideas… because even if you know that going out on Thursday is a bad idea, it’s still the best night to party. • #throwbackfriday…Old-school music from the 90s and noughties to start the weekend in style. • No strings attached, Saturday night go wild! You can really let your hair down at this party. The idea was to create a unique music identity in House 21 with top DJs who know how to get the party started, playing a variety of house, commercial and RnB.

Our Legal Eagle Alexander Egerton Partner, Seddons

Alexander Egerton is a partner in our corporate department. He advises a number of businesses on all commercial issues. Many of his clients are in the technology and media sector. His work in the corporate team includes working with clients through each stage of a business’ “life”: from choice of structure, share incentives, and raising finance, to putting a legal infrastructure (regulatory requirements, contracts etc.) in place, and ultimately ensure that there is a viable exit strategy in place.

Q: A:

Can I hide the extent of my involvement with a company from the public?

Making companies more transparent has become a recent feature of political debate. The concern remains that some of the features of the company structure, which make it good for business, also make it attractive to criminals. Companies can be misused to facilitate a range of criminal activities - from money laundering and tax evasion, to corruption and terrorist financing. From 30 June 2016, UK companies (except listed companies) and limited liability partnerships (LLPs) have had to maintain a register; the People with Significant Control Register (PSC register). This includes information about the individuals who own or control companies, including their name, month, year of birth, nationality, and details of their interest in the company. The UK is the first country in the G20 to create a public register of this kind. The PSC register may be kept in hard copy or electronic form, and may be arranged in such manner as the directors of the company think fit. Failure to maintain the PSC register is a criminal offence. A person of significant control “PSC” is someone that holds more than 25% of shares or voting rights in a company. They have the right to appoint or remove the majority of the board of directors, or otherwise exercise significant influence or control. This information will form a central public register of people with significant control, which is free to access. While the ownership of shares is straightforward, there are plenty of arrangements that require review. For example: • The legislation introduces the concept of a relevant legal entity (RLE). This is a body corporate that would have been a PSC had it been an individual, and which is subject to its own disclosure requirements. A parent/holding company will be the RLE of its subsidiary; • If a shareholding is held on a bare trust, then the beneficiary is likely to be in a position to dictate how the legal owner, the nominee, votes; • Any contractual arrangements which allow one PSC or RLE to control a company need to be considered; • There are rules which reduce the number of RLEs, which are to be disclosed with multi layered companies. There is no need to disclose the chain; only the immediate RLE and not the RLE that control the other RLEs.

98

Home House

Alexander Egerton Every company or LLP needs to complete its PSC register. Even if there appears to be nothing to disclose, one of the following statements has to be given: • The company has completed its investigations and has concluded that no person is registrable in its PSC register; • The company knows or has reasonable cause to believe that there is a registrable PSC – or registrable RLE, but that PSC or RLE has not yet been identified; • The company has identified a registrable PSC, but the company has not yet confirmed that individual's required particulars. Note that this statement cannot apply in relation to RLEs, whose details do not have to be confirmed before entry in a PSC register; • The company has either not yet started or has not yet completed taking reasonable steps to find out if anyone is a registrable PSC or registrable RLE. This statement may only be included if none of the three preceding statements applies. The disclosure requirements are: • For Individuals. In the case of an individual, their name, service address, country or state of usual residence, nationality, and date of birth. • for RLEs. In the case of an RLE, its corporate or firm name, registered or principal office, legal form of the entity and law by which it is governed, register of companies in which it is entered, and registration number (if applicable).

• Date and nature of control. In all cases, the PSC register must also contain details of the date on which a person became a registrable person or registrable RLE, and the nature of their control. The PSC Regulations also require that the level of interest (within specified bands - broadly, from more than 25% up to 50%, from more than 50% up to 75%, or 75% or more) be stated, and set out the particular form of statement that should be used (with deviations from the official wording not permitted). There are provisions which allow a PSC to use his service as opposed to residential address. If the PSC considers that his inclusion will put him in danger, he can ask that these disclosure requirements are relaxed.
