elcome to our Spring instalment with the latest news from the House as we celebrate the tenth issue of the magazine, another unique chapter in the story of the club and a reminder of what draws us all here. In this issue we are celebrating art and speak to the fabulous Alison Jackson, a renowned photographer as well as BAFTA and multi award-winning high-profile artist, having enjoyed press coverage from The Guardian, Sunday Times and Channel 4 to name but a few. Jackson’s photographs explore the topical phenomena of ‘fake news’ and the cult of the celebrity and we are delighted to be displaying a range of her work in The Gloucester Lounge. You will no doubt have seen the new collection of art adorning the walls in the Restaurant, Bison Bar, Gloucester Lounge and House Lounge, giving a fresh perspective across the House. In addition to Alison Jackson there are a plethora of other talents to enjoy, including leading contemporary portrait artist, Alexander Newley, whose work can be viewed in The Garden Room. In all orders of business, Spring 2019 represents a symbolic milestone for Home House as we launch our first sister club, Home Grown, situated moments away from Home House, a dedicated space for a global community of high growth entrepreneurs, investors and performance business leaders. Our doors opened and welcomed our dynamic founding membership, an eclectic mix of individuals from all sectors ranging from fashion to finance, with a shared passion for business. Brought to life by a launch event that even the Countess of Home would have been proud of, Home Grown has kickstarted with an enriched events calendar incorporating our How to… series, invite only entrepreneur meet investor suppers as well as talks by Rock Star entrepreneurs; Charles Tyrwitt’s founder, Nick Wheeler, and Home House’s original investor and Dragon, Richard Farleigh. Following the two-year refurbishment project of the Grade II listed buildings, we are thrilled to see the club encapsulated by those looking to network, inspire and connect with others scaling their businesses. Needless to say, with the ongoing support of our members, we are proud to experience the growth of the Home House Collection alongside the ever-evolving London clubland scene. Also in this edition, don’t miss the entertaining instalments from our very own House expert, the charming Robin Dutt, who will reveal to you his Home House secrets. Did you know that honeysuckle was the Countess of Home’s favourite flower? It can be found throughout House 20 but you have to know where to look… We hope you enjoy these ditties from the fabulous Dutty. The joy of the Home House outdoor season is also upon us and we once again look forward to alfresco dining under the glorious Raj tent in the garden. Let our team take care of your parched palate whilst you unwind and relax in the sun. Last but not least, the months ahead will bring more of our legendary parties and we are sure that you will enjoy them as much as we do creating them. We thank you for your contribution to making it all happen and look forward to celebrating the rest of 2019 with you!

Andrew Richardson Managing Director

Dear Fellow Members, Aside from celebrating the publication of our 10th issue – the biggest news for our members is, of course, the opening of our new sister club, Home Grown, which is located just a few hundred metres away in a beautiful period building. The club will celebrate entrepreneurialism, networking and co-working. Home Grown is the brainchild of our inspirational MD Andrew Richardson and the final vision, execution, and management is that of his and Home Grown GM, Sophie Chaney. Together they have worked tirelessly to ensure the new club’s remit is focussed and serves as a conduit for our members’ entrepreneurial dreams of growing successful businesses from concept through to reality. In this issue we celebrate art and our cover offers a cheeky insight into what might have been and further pictures from that whimsical collection adorn our club’s walls and are discussed on pages 20-21. Other features I hope you enjoy reading include; our clubs’ legendary parties which are celebrated through some fabulous photographs on pages 85-97, Robin Dutt’s Secrets of Home House and, finally, endless ideas for you to plan your summer holidays with inspiring destinations revealed in our glorious travel pages. Thank you to all my team for producing yet another fabulous issue and, as always, we welcome your feedback on the magazine – azzy@epicureanlife.co.uk. We wish you all a fabulous summer and hopefully we’ll see you in our amazing garden! Azzy Asghar Publisher

Robin Dutt reveals the...

Seven Secrets of

Home House

Rear of the House

Home House

T

here is no denying that Home House is a trove of tales. So much has happened here since the 1770s and of such a dizzying, refined, unusual and special nature. A place such as this, locked in time and yet so time-forward has its own way of telling its own story. Perhaps you know a lot about her. Perhaps not very much. But listen to her carefully sometimes and she may reveal a thing or two. In the meantime... consider my compilation, some stories told to me by those long gone at the very beginning of the club some 21 years ago. So in some cases, whilst I cannot confirm the efficacy of their observations, I cannot deny their charm relating to this, the Ace of Clubs...

Lady Islington Bathroom

1 According to early maps of the area and particularly one which

celebrates eating and drinking in Regency London, there is no 20 Portman Square. Instead it was No. 17. The map I discovered clearly shows our Home House, the layout of the garden instantly recognisable and significantly more important than its neighbours even from these, shall we say, basic but thorough drawings.

2

Whilst Home House did take a hit from a German bomb during a wartime attack, by dint of Fate, it fell through the roof and was doused in a freshly drawn bath. The house which occupied the space where the Radisson Blu now stands was apparently smashed to smithereens by a bomb and by all accounts was even grander than our building – if that were at all possible.

3

The centrepiece of House 20 must be the Imperial Rose staircase. Some have called it the ‘Lightning Staircase’. And although the dome shows every season and every type of weather, it is one supposes, lightning that would be the most dramatic to view from the comfort of within. One year the club covered the glass with ice white lights to celebrate the advent of Christmas.

Staircase Dome

4 When you are next in the Etruscan Room seek out the very human

faces there represented mingling with the flora and fauna, gods and goddesses, steer heads and winged forms. All of these are or were founder members. A blacked out disc or two makes you wonder what on earth did they do to merit such treatment? I spent several days watching artist Royston Jones applying the motifs he had painted and cut out in his studio. It was like watching a latter day Michelangelo – in a way. The colours of the Etruscan Room are terracotta, ebony and ivory – hues associated with ancient amphorae.

5 The wonderful Sir John Soane Museum in Holborn is home to countless original drawings of Home House by Robert Adam, our architect whose flair we enjoy some 250 years on.

Ram’s Head

6 Apparently Honeysuckle was the Countess of Home’s favourite

flower. It is to be found throughout the length and breadth of House 20. But you have to look. The same goes for the motif of the Ram’s head – first House of the zodiac and a popular eighteenth century architectural motif.

7 This is a difficult one. Experts, observers, enthusiasts and others

Etruscan Room

have observed that Home House may be...‘back to front.’ This means that could the palatial rear really have been the back entrance? Or imagine the scene, from here with views, uninterrupted to Hampstead, you might, as Lady Home might have once waited for the thundering hooves of horses and the spin of the carriage wheels drawing her guests to her Palace of Pleasure.

It’s A Dog’s Life With over 8 million pet dogs in the UK, the dog owning population is a sizeable lobby group. So it is perhaps surprising that whilst the UK sees itself as an animal friendly country, there are still many no-go areas as far as dogs are concerned and there’s nothing worse than the prospect of having to leave your pet behind. Here at Home House we like to welcome our members and their canine companions and are committed to being a dog-friendly destination. But don’t take our word for it, here’s what some of our members have to say…

Julian Brown

My dog Button is always looked after very well at Home House with a bowl of water provided and on occasions the chef has cooked chicken for her. Button is named after the F1 Driver Jenson Button. I once met Jenson Button and mentioned I’d named my dog after him… he gave me an odd look and quickly left!

Rogeria Mulrine

We do love that Home House is dog friendly as we live just a few blocks away and enjoy very much bringing Monty with us for social events. Monty is an Australian Shepherd and has been going to Home House since he was three and a half months old. He helped us make lots of friends there as we had just joined as members.

Rachel Fallon-Langdon

For us the best thing about Home House being dog friendly, is that we travel out of the UK for work and the dogs often get abandoned at the dog minders. When we come home it’s so nice to know they can just be with us whether we are at home or at the place where we socialise the most!! It is amazing being able to have them stay with us overnight as well. The staff are extremely tolerant, caring and mindful of our little pooches... we can only rate the pet friendliness of Home House with 6 stars out of 5 stars… it is really beyond what is expected when I joined. The dog show last year was the best, superbly organised and a lot of fun. Our dogs are called Bean (the black one) and Charlie (the chocolate one)… nothing really unusual about our dogs except they couldn’t be more opposite if they tried, as you can see from the pictures… the black one is a total gangster and will eat, seek, and destroy anything and will probably meet his end early in a scene not too different from a scene in ‘Luther’. The brown one is a timid little princess who lives her life in blind panic, and stays behind my heels. They are pretty inseparable, but completely different characters. He is definitely the ‘brother from another mother’.

Emma Ross

The dog-friendliness of Home House was a major part of the appeal of joining the club. Although she is no handbag dog, Caramel is small enough to go almost anywhere with me (even furtively into Waitrose in a fabulous wheelie carrier that can easily be mistaken for a smart laptop carrier) and I like to take her with me as much as I can. But I value the dog-friendliness of Home House not just because I can bring my own dog (she’s actually my step-dog, but more on that later), but also because I enjoy seeing other dogs. There is a certain lovely energy about establishments that welcome dogs and Home House has definitely embraced it and exudes it. One of Caramel’s favourite activities is riding on my scooter secured to my chest in her papoose like a baby kangaroo, with her head wrapped in a cashmere scarf and her face thrust into the wind, luxuriating in the breeze that kisses her curls as she surveys everything we pass on the way to Home House. I do have a pair of Biggles motorcycle goggles for her (in pink, of course), but I haven’t yet plucked up the nerve to put them on her. Caramel and I met through the thoroughly modern Borrow My Doggie app and our relationship has matured from holiday cover two years ago to shared custody today – she lives with us pretty much one week on, one week off and during all the big holidays, so her owner can stay focused on her school work and travel abroad, while we can have all the pleasure, without sacrificing our freedom, and without the bills!

MEET THE NEIGHBOURS We love to encourage our members to say ‘hello’, introduce themselves to each other, and make new friends and contacts. With so many eclectic and interesting individuals making up our fantastic club, here is a look at a few who you are likely to see sitting on a sofa near you!

Rachel Fallon-Langdon

Anna Kucher Meet Werikoko, a German Art Director and Media Designer based in London. She seems to speak almost every language that comes to mind; indeed German, Russian, Ukrainian, French, English and Greek are in her repertoire. When she is not sitting in her studio working on digital designs and animations, or photographing a muse, she is enjoying Home House’s legendary events where she loves to be a “Butterfly” on the dance floor. When you meet her, ask about the origin of the nickname Butterfly or Werikoko, there is an interesting story hidden behind it, so don’t miss out. Home House for Werikoko is like being at home, but even better; always new “neighbours”, new life stories and bringing old good friends together, dancing and celebrating life. It’s a source of creative inspiration that comes with a massive playground stretching over two houses, combining futuristic interior design with antique scrollwork and a sunny garden area. All these are ideal places for a butterfly to spread her wings and fly.

“Born and bred in Ireland, I graduated from Southampton Solent University with a degree in Yacht Manufacture and Design. I then moved to Cape Town where I worked for various manufactures before joining Gunboat (high end and high performance Catamarans) as an “in-house” designer. I progressed up the ranks at Gunboat working alongside the CEO for ten years. I became the Marketing Director and was also responsible for client liaison, media and PR. For the past four years I have been traversing the globe as the team manager of “Team Phaedo”, the world’s fastest sailing team. Most famous for the MOD70, a 70 foot powerful trimaran, Team Phaedo has achieved 10 World Speed Records and over 40 international regatta and race wins. The team is comprised of many of the world’s best sailors including Olympic medallists. Home House is a very special place for me, (of course because I got married there) but it starts with the genuinely warm reception as soon as you walk in. The House’s various areas suit whatever mood you’re in from quiet relaxation to full on partying! The majority of members are so social you’re never far away from meeting new people.”

“A welcoming ambiance and chic Robert Adam’s interior still continues to captivate me when I am at Home House.” - Shivani Nagpal

Shivani Nagpal Shivani is a qualified pharmacist and hands on director of a ‘Dementia Specialist’ care home. She sits on the executive board for Hampshire Care Association. Her interests include art, literature and health and fitness. She says: “A welcoming ambiance and chic Robert Adam’s interior still continues to captivate me when I am at Home House. The exquisite Drawing Rooms and restaurants are the perfect location for celebrating special occasions and private dinner parties in the heart of London. The variety of events is a fabulous opportunity to experience something new. It is through the members’ events I have made some great friendships. The members’ parties are stylish and never disappoint! Since becoming a member in 2016 I have greatly valued being part of ‘Team Home House’ and participating in the Royal Parks Half Marathon. Not only does it give me an opportunity to challenge myself but also set a new fitness goal.”

Dr Joney De Souza “My name is Dr Joney De Souza, I was born in Brazil and graduated in Medicine in 1992. With over 15 years’ experience in Aesthetic and AntiAgeing Medicine, I’m a trainer of other doctors in Aesthetic procedures as well as running my own busy clinic at 49 Blandford Street, Marylebone. I work tirelessly to offer my clients outstanding natural results with minimal downtime and I’m always constantly seeking proven advances in Anti-Ageing treatments and solutions and I attend many world-wide seminars and conferences. I live in Marylebone and I’ve been a member of Home House now for more than two years. I love the wonderful family friendly atmosphere and the warm way they welcome me each time I pop in for dinner or drinks. It’s also a great place to have my business meetings and never fails to impress my clients or business partners.”

Charlotte Grobien OBE “I have been a member at Home House now for one year and renewed my membership with enthusiasm. It was with a little trepidation that I joined as I am a “solo” member i.e. there is no ‘plus one!’ But I have found Home House to be a very sociable, inclusive club where I have been welcomed by the staff and where I have made some extremely lively, likeminded, new friends. People are interesting and varied – there is rarely a dull evening and I love bringing non-members to this fun atmosphere. So, if you see a lady sitting on her own (me maybe!) do come over and say hello and have a quick chat. The club has also been very useful for my work as I build new houses or renovate property but I do it solely in order to give away ALL the profits I make to local London charities. At Home House I have found members who work in construction, PR, and Philanthropy who are interested in what I do and who are keen to get involved.”

“For me Home House is exactly that, it’s a home away from home. I know I’m always guaranteed a fantastic time.” - Manny Akhtar

Maria Papalia Born in the South of Italy, Maria was formerly a lawyer and is now a personal stylist in London with experience ranging from production, showroom and luxury retail to styling international clients. She enjoys the creativity of styling your personality to suit your lifestyle. “I believe that we are all different and unique therefore, only with a bespoke styling service will you be able to express your personality and identity.” Passionate about supporting individuals to express who they are, feel comfortable and confident within themselves and reflect this in their style, Maria founded “Style your Personal ID” with her business partner Sharon Wilson a Personal Coach specialising in personal and professional development. As a member of Home House Maria says: “There is no other place in Central London where you can have an amazing venue for business and enjoy your leisure time like at the House during the whole year inside and outside. All my best memories in London are there.”

Manny Akhtar “I’m originally from Yorkshire and have been in London for almost 14 years now. I work in financial services and in my spare time I enjoy catching up with friends and family, DJ’ing and restoring classic cars. For me Home House is exactly that, it’s a home away from home. Putting aside that it’s a great venue to host parties or just to relax after a hard day’s work, what really makes Home House my favourite place is its wonderful staff. I’m always greeted by smiles every time I’m there and they really do go the extra mile to make you feel at home. Whether it’s catching up with friends in the Drawing Rooms over cocktails and a light bite or hitting the dance floor in House 21, I know I’m always guaranteed a fantastic time.”

Jen Janput “I moved to London a few years ago and wanted to meet like-minded people both socially and professionally, and have lots of fun in the process. Home House has offered me all of these things and more. It offers my friends and I a place to network, in finesse. Having visited a number of other members’ clubs in the area, Home House exceeds all those experiences and the location is perfect especially after a few too many lychee martinis. Being a member has given me the opportunity to meet many new people, some I would never have met by other means. So far, the events have been amazing and there are always different things happening throughout the week. I should have joined Home House a lot sooner!”

“Everyone at Home House really makes sure you are looked after in the very best way whether at an event or in the House.” - Anna Tranchell

Barbara Jarabik Barbara is the Director and Founder of Cullinan Property, a one-stop shop consultancy which specialises in the sourcing and acquisition of exclusive investment opportunities in Budapest, Hungary. Barbara decided to join Home House last year which she maintains was one of her best decisions. “I absolutely love being a member at Home House, I feel like it is my second home. Both the staff and members are so open and friendly, my clients also feel really comfortable when visiting me. Home House is a really convenient venue for me, not only due to its perfect location, but also I feel I can do everything under one roof as it has so many facilities, unlike other clubs I have been to before. I always find a cosy place where I can work on my laptop, and one of my favourites is the balcony at House 20 overlooking the beautiful garden during the summer.”

Anna Tranchell “Former national level Swedish golfer living the dream in London, I’m a young professional in the sport industry, delivering events across Europe and working on the European Tour, ATP World Tour Finals, a 4,000 person sportive for The Prince’s Trust and a 5 day ride to the South of France for Laurent Perrier. Outside of sport I love a classic brunch, travelling and exploring the hidden gems of London. I became a member at Home House to meet like-minded people and absolutely love the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, it feels like home. It quickly became the place to be for myself and friends! I got invited to the Home House Open last summer and as the only girl I can only say it was a smashing success! Everyone at Home House really makes sure you are looked after in the very best way whether at an event or in the House.”

Amazing Grace We speak with British singer and BBC television presenter, now luxury event and wedding designer, Grace Kennedy

P

lease tell us about yourself ? Life changed for me when I won the iconic talent show ‘Opportunity Knocks’, with Hughie Green; I was only 14. From then on, it was a non-stop rollercoaster of live performances all over the world, which led to the BBC commissioning the award-wining ‘Grace Kennedy Show’. The show was choreographed by Nigel Lythgoe and featured such guests as Bruce Forsyth, Lulu, The Pointer Sisters and Al Jarreau, to name just a few, and won a BAFTA award. As a result, I was then asked to perform twice on The Royal Variety show – once with Sammy Davis and the second time with Aretha Franklin. I was also working in films and had a guest role as Sharday in ‘Magnum PI’ with Tom Selleck. As well as all that, I somehow found the time to tour in very successful musicals in Japan and all around Europe – ‘Carmen Jones’, ‘The Cotton Club’ and ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ with Leslie Joseph. As a talented singer at heart, could you tell us what inspired you to begin a career in planning luxury weddings and events? The biggest inspiration is that now, not having to perform in the spotlight, I can look back on my own experience of fantastic events. I am responsible for working behind the scenes to ensure we deliver high-end destination weddings and events. The best of the best. Could you tell us about some of the exciting events you have worked on? At this sort of level, most of our clients insist on discretion and are keen to keep everything private, however, I can tell you that we did Vincent Kompany’s wedding, organised the Savile Row launch for Gary Anderson and have been involved with Jermaine Jackson of The Jackson 5. Do you still keep your hand in singing, if so – how do you manage your time? As they say, once a singer always a singer and, funnily enough, just recently I was asked to go back in the studio to record some tracks with a top producer and bounce some ideas around. The voice is still definitely there, but obviously all my energy is focused on my core business of high end/destination weddings and events.

What are your key tips for running a successful event? The most important factor is honesty – we deliver incredible results but never promise the impossible, we aim to manage the client’s expectations; and then, of course, to surpass it. Every event demands very careful planning with the client. And, of course, hands on supervision on the day is essential to make sure that everything runs smoothly. What are the most stressful parts of running a luxury wedding? A luxury wedding is hugely important for everyone connected to the happy couple. From our perspective, we plan every detail, but sometimes there are outside factors that we cannot control and then you have to be ready to take decisive and appropriate action to ensure that the plan remains on track. Over the years, we have seen it all: cakes arriving in pieces, ushers without shoes, the bride having a change of mind and not wanting to go through with it at the last moment! We always expect the unexpected and, at all times, remain calm and diplomatic. What are your future plans for the Grace Kennedy brand? I will continue to develop the high-end weddings element of our work. Additionally, I plan to expand, and see the destination wedding/ event area very much as a growth area. We have recently done a deal with the Four Seasons Group that allows us to offer an incredible, exclusive wellness break for couples to Bali, centred on traditional Full Moon Yoga. It is extraordinary. What do you love about Home House? I have been a member for over 14 years. Home House is great for meetings, I have finalised so many deals there. In addition, I love the staff, they always make me so welcome. Over the years, I have been to many of the amazing members events at Home House, and love having private meetings there. I love chatting to fellow members, so if you see me on your next visit do come and say hello. I am always happy to talk and, of course, if you are planning a special wedding or travel experience then look no further! www.gracekennedyevents.com

THE BISON BAR - A COLLECTION OF BRITISH CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS Damien Hirst Since the late 1980s, Hirst has used a variety of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationship between art, life, and death. His contribution to British art over the last two and a half decades was recognised in 2012 with a major retrospective of his work staged at Tate Modern. Represented by Masters&Contemporary – Nigel@mastersandcontemporary.com

Chris Levine Chris is a pioneer of light art, using various digital and lighting technologies to push the boundaries of the visual experience in art. John Hoyland John was known for his use of vibrant colour in producing abstractions which wavered between depth and flatness. His works are held in the collections of The Tate Gallery in London and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. He died in 2011.

Keith Tyson

Represented by Masters&Contemporary – Nigel@mastersandcontemporary.com

Russell Young Russell is best known for compelling, larger than life silkscreen paintings from recent history and popular culture. Born in Northern England in 1960, from an early age he was powerfully drawn to the idealised drama of The American Dream. Represented by Masters&Contemporary – Nigel@mastersandcontemporary.com

Suzy Murphy From occupying a small tenement apartment with her large Irish family to emigrating with her mother to the vast open landscapes of North America, the subsequent emotional shift of being alone was the creative catalyst for the tranquillity and magical realism that informs her work. Represented by Masters&Contemporary – Nigel@mastersandcontemporary.com

Charming Baker Although he is often known as a sculptor, he remains primarily a painter with an interest in narrative and an understanding of the tradition of painting. Known to purposefully damage his work by drilling, cutting and even shooting it, Baker intentionally puts in to question the preciousness of art and the definition of its beauty. Represented by Masters&Contemporary – Nigel@mastersandcontemporary.com

Keith Tyson In the works of British artist Keith Tyson the question of how and why things come into being is being treated and investigated. Tyson has a curiosity for systems, man-made or natural, how they work and what they can create. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 2002. Alexander Newley

K

nown for his iconic portrait paintings of major figures in the Arts including Gore Vidal, Billy Wilder, Christopher Reeve, Oliver Stone and Steven Berkoff, Alexander’s portraits form part of the permanent collection of The National Portrait Gallery at The Smithsonian in Washington DC. In 2006, Newley’s portrait of Sir Nigel Hawthorne in character as George III was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum for their permanent collection celebrating theatre in the 20th century. Other successes have included his mesmeric, multi-layered Head of Lincoln which is now the central attraction at The Lincoln Museum in Springfield, Illinois. Most recently, Quartet Books published Newley’s memoir of a Hollywood childhood, Unaccompanied Minor, to great acclaim.

Can you please tell us where your inspiration for painting beautiful portraiture originated from? My desire to paint portraits stems from my conviction that each human being is a unique, unrepeatable event in the history of the universe and that each contains the divine spark that will always be a mystery, that cannot be solved by science or technology, that cannot be controlled by these things, but will always exist as the sustaining light that makes us human and gives meaning to our lives. I am a painter of this spark, this divine consciousness at the root of the human.

Portrait Perfection

How have you evolved and changed as an artist over time? I have become much looser and more intuitive. I have learnt to distrust my rational intelligence and fully embrace my deeper, ‘natural’ intelligence. What important lessons have you learnt that have resulted in your successive, world recognised portraits? The most important force in life is love, which engenders compassion and intelligence, and enables me as a portraitist to contemplate my subjects with limitless interest and attention. How do you ensure you capture emotion and a sense of personality in your paintings? I become totally present for my subject so that a sense of communion is set up between us. There must be trust and a mutual human respect for the intelligence to flow and the portrait to take shape, which is a record of the power and intensity of relationship between artist and subject. I believe this transaction is sacred, and is one of the reasons why portraiture is still one of the most relevant and fascinating areas of visual art and painting. How long does it take you to traditionally create a piece of artwork? It can be anything from three hours to three months. Linear time is of no significance. It is depth time that is important. You can see more in your subject in three minutes of concerted, passionate looking than you could gather from three months of tired, intellectual contemplation. The only thing that matters is the intensity of engagement. Time goes away in this trance. Who are your favourite artists and why?

Rembrandt, Sargent, Shiele, Munch, Van Gogh – in no particular order – all the great human artists who found a way to make paint speak so deeply and completely of their existence. Can you tell us about the art you have displayed at Home House? I have created a series of cityscapes of London and the leading monuments of London. I believe London is a holy city, like Jerusalem. I agree with William Blake that London is a city of spirits and great things, where heaven has found a way to sew itself into the very fabric of human existence. London is lit up for me, like a vision. I have conveyed that in my large aerial view painting across the Thames which I have called London, Sacred City. I have also written a poem to accompany the exhibition. It is very difficult for me to crystallise my love for London, but I have tried in words and images to capture its mystery, complexity and abiding strength and importance as the capital of the human spirit. I also think that London is at a crossroads where great conflict has come to the fore and there is a battle between the divisive forces of reason and the unitary forces of love. You can see this conflict in the skies I have painted over Westminster, in the turbulence of the Thames. I have every hope that the light will prevail, which is why I have painted such a blistering white light winding through the dramatic skies in all the pieces. What are your plans for the future? I am working on a show of portraits of influential women in the new women’s movement, starting with Rose McGowan, who I recently painted here at Home House where she sat for me. I will also be teaching and lecturing as artist-in-residence at the Four Arts Museum in Palm Beach this spring. www.alexandernewley.com

an you please tell us about yourself and your profession? By day I work as a barrister but I’ve always been deeply involved with photography. To that extent, I’ve worked in most genres including weddings and corporate work. What type of photography do you focus on? Nowadays my photographic time is mostly spent on walking the pavements and photographing people as they move through their lives. No equipment other than your camera is needed and every pedestrian is a potential model. You also get quite fit! This type of photography is also very seductive. You don’t necessarily need to practice for a 1,000 hours or more. Beginners can get lucky and produce a fantastic picture with their very first shot. What does street photography mean to you? With a little training and experience I can drift into an almost meditative state and hours will fly by. While you can study art and photographic composition for years, when you’re in an urban environment there simply isn’t time to control what’s going on. The magic happens when all that practice makes you unconsciously move half a foot to the left. You get a clean background and the picture is transformed. On a different level, if you have a stressful job then going out with a camera for an hour can also be hugely refreshing. Why do you prefer interacting with subjects from afar instead of posed photographs? Do all your subjects know they are being photographed? It’s a misconception that street photography should only be done close up to the subject with a wide angle lens. Even a decade ago the streets were much less busy and the writing you see everywhere on shops and signs (which instantly distracts the viewer’s eye) is now everywhere. Using a 28mm lens on Oxford Street means you’ve got to be unbelievably lucky to get a clean background. If the subject suits, use a telephoto! From the many thousands of people I’ve photographed I doubt I’ve ever spoken to more than about a dozen of them (and four of those were US customs agents who thought I was up to no good). I never interact or ask subjects to pose, preferring to capture the moments with as little interference as possible. Often my subjects are unaware they’re being photographed although eye contact usually makes a picture immeasurably better. Do you have any tips for aspiring photographers? Always have a camera to hand and try and use it every day. It doesn’t matter if it’s an expensive Leica or a camera phone. Spotting interesting pictures is a skill that only gets better the more you use your eyes and photographic brain. It’s not unusual to only get one picture you’re really happy with out of several days of trudging the streets. The great artists and photographers from years gone by would now be working in Hollywood, so watch well composed movies and television series. For more contemporary films, the cinemaphotographer Roger Deakins is a good place to start. Also try Luther. Can you tell us more about the photography events you host at the club? Every few months we hold either a full day beginner or intermediate course. Many of the members who attend the beginners’ course have previously only photographed their family or pets and want to progress beyond their camera phone. We include how to safely photograph in an urban environment and explore in some depth photographic and artistic composition. We also review and (gently) critique pictures that everyone is asked to bring along which makes it a very interactive day. Quite a number of the participants hit a “high” and produce really outstanding work on their first attempts. It’s a great experience when that happens. What do you love about Home House? That they are able to host such a wide range of diverse social events which is unique for a London members’ club. Also, music almost every night, bars that stay open until the sun comes up, karaoke, the best steak tartare in London and dogs everywhere.

an you please tell us how you got your start in photography? I’m a sculptor and I’d only taken photographs of my own sculptures. When it came to do my masters at the Royal College of Art, they said I was a photographer rather than a sculptor. They insisted I went into the Fine Art Photography department, which I hated because I thought photography was a deceitful, lying medium that no-one would take seriously. So I refused to do any work in the photography department for a whole year and continued with my sculpture. After that, I thought it a shame to waste a photography masters offer at the RCA, and became interested in the theory of photography, and started creating work exploring the importance of imagery and the seductiveness of the image. I hated photography because it was this slimy, slippery medium that you think you can believe but you can never pin down. It doesn’t tell the whole truth. After this mini exploration Princess Diana died and I wondered why the whole country and world were mourning her even though we did not know her intimately, and very few people had actually met her. People were mourning her as if she was more important than a family member. People were hysterical. The day before her death the country hated her in the press and the day after her death she was a saint. The media had manipulated this – she was a manufactured product of the media. The word from the editors at the time of her death was ‘make the world cry’ – and they did! She became a two-dimensional person, a person of image that had penetrated the collective and psyche – that started to interest me. Can you tell us more about your inspiration to use art and photography to explore the cult of celebrity? I was compelled to make work about Princess Diana when I first acquired an image from Mario Testino and shot at it with a gun hoping to erase the image of Princess Diana from my mind. The Royal College of Art was definitely not enjoying it, and said I was infringing on Mario Testino’s copyright. I received letters that I was going to be expelled so I had to stop my work and started to use myself instead. However, I began to look like Myra Hindley rather than Princess Diana, so the only legal loophole was to hire models and make them look exactly like Diana and Dodi using wigs, makeup, and prosthetics. I created images of Diana and Dodi with their mixed race child – it looked like a private portrait shot by Lord Snowdon – people came to lay flowers under it. It was really a lovely picture raising questions about whether Diana was in love with Dodi, was she engaged, was she pregnant by him, was she murdered because she was pregnant by him? There was fury by the press – there was a meltdown at the Royal College of Art. I hated the medium and photography; I was just trying to prove that a camera lies. When people would look at this image, they would not know whether it was real or fake, but of course, they would realise it wasn’t real because they never had a child, but it looked so real for a split second they believed they had. And that’s what I wanted – that wonderful confusion and it worked.

Do you prefer photographing real celebrity portraits or staged celebrity look-alikes? Photographing real celebrities is a joy because it’s lovely to meet them, they have worked hard and they’ve got to the top of their pile. But I’m not really great at being limited to just a good craftsman – i.e. just taking a good shot; craft-wise, it’s actually harder to get things out of focus and looking blurry and shooting through door cracks than shooting a straight photograph! I’m a very formal person and I’m a very formal photographer and everything is compositionally perfect and then once I’ve done that I have to mess it up which is very irritating. One thing I always do is keep the composition perfect so it always remains a fast read but just make sure it’s shot with something in the way or line of vision, making us aware and highlighting our own voyeurism. How do you find lookalikes? With great difficulty – I use all casting agents, lookalike agents, call out on social media, plead with the newspapers to help put the word out, and I go up to people on the street – that’s fine if you are trying to find someone pretty like Meghan, Kim or Kate but nobody wants to be told they look like Phillip Green… or now Jacob Rees Mogg. You’ve just finished your first stage show – can you tell us more about it? It’s quite a precise costume drama going on with live styling. One minute you’re watching a video and then I’m pulling someone out from the audience and transforming them in five minutes, with a live photoshoot – so they have a taste of being a celebrity. What was the inspiration behind the show? You can’t tell what is real or not anymore, and it doesn’t matter. I am interested in our obsession with celebrities and the phenomenon of how we think we know celebrities intimately but very few of us have met them for real. Our secret want of the private and the very nature of photography is a seductive catalyst to entice voyeurism, and is an inherently deceitful medium. Can you tell us more about your photography exhibition you are holding? I’m holding a photography competition and exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery on the 28th of June. If you are an aspiring photographer you must contact me urgently because I want to see your work. It’s called ‘A day in the life of ’ – it’s not themed because I want you to be creative and just show me anything that you feel is important to you in a day in your life. It’s a wonderful opportunity to show at the Saatchi Gallery which is just phenomenal. This exhibition is in collaboration with Mehta Bell Projects. Meet the PRODUCER We speak with Dr Martin Tesch, one of Germany’s most renowned vintners and owner of TESCH

How did you get involved in winemaking? I was born on the family owned TESCH vinery, but when I was young, I did not want to work and live as a winemaker, so I left home when I was fifteen years old. I became a microbiologist and biochemist but at the end of my twenties, my wife and I returned to the estate. Can you tell us more about your vineyard and the wines you produce? The TESCH estate specialises in dry Riesling wines and our vineyards are situated in the northern growing area of Nahe in Germany, 50 miles west of Frankfurt. The heart of the vinery consists of five distinctive single vineyard sites. Riesling is very sensitive to differences in soil and microclimates. Our area has a unique geological diversity, which leads to a natural spectrum of varying dry Riesling wines. How do you know when you have a particularly good vintage? This depends solely on weather conditions. There is an expression that a dry Riesling is best after a ‘vegetation period’ with varied weather. Preferably, dry periods and regular rain, hot days but also cold nights combined with a long, dry picking season so that my team and I can work without stress. Also, ideally, yields should be moderate – neither too high nor too low. What do you find to be the most challenging part of the harvest? Every great wine is in the first instance a personal idea. So there is an ideal way of working in the vineyard, in the harvest and in the cellar, but nature (weather) can take you away from that ideal.

The only way of reverting to your initial idea is hard work. This means that in some years it is challenging to achieve the best results with the selection of the perfect grapes under the worst weather conditions. Regardless of the cost, what makes a good wine? The best wines always become a memory. In my life I have tasted wines, which I could describe in detail, many, many years after I enjoyed them. The more precise this impression, the better! So, on the one hand, I care about pleasant details like clear fruit aromas, a nice body or a good balance. But no less important are the remarkable details, which don’t necessarily have to be ‘nice’. For example, a racy acidity, a smoky minerality or a crisp finish can make a dry Riesling unforgettable. You are hosting an event at Home House – can you tell us what guests can expect? The perfect combination of Home House’s cuisine paired with wines from one of the most thrilling wine estates in Northern Europe. Guests will discover the effects of terroir and the modern side of Riesling. Do you have any wine pairing tips for amateurs who are throwing a dinner party? Food and wine always develop in parallel. Riesling is the most northern noble grape in the world. So the perfect combination for me is North European cuisine. So if you think of cream, butter, onions or bacon – no matter if you serve meat, vegetables or fish – then also consider serving Riesling. What is your favourite food and wine pairing? The most astonishing result is shown by mature Riesling wines in combination with vegetarian food. The lively fruit character is supported by a hearty ripeness and smoky notes. This perfectly complements roasted or cooked vegetable and fruit dishes. www.weingut-tesch.de

Al Fresco Beyond the imposing facade of the House’s Georgian exterior in Portman Square, through its gilded and chic interior, members and guests will discover Home House’s hidden gem – a spacious and secluded garden set within the walled courtyard of the House. The Winter Marquee is gone for another year, marking the march of time and is replaced by the striking Raj tented area framed by elegant greenery. Parasol tables and a spectacular champagne bar create an elegant yet relaxed space in which members and guests can enjoy lunch and dinner or simply a relaxing drink al fresco during the balmy summer months. And let’s not forget the fabulous BBQs, always a popular feature on Sundays. Over the years The Garden has also been host to a number of memorable events including a magical performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and a unique version of ‘Twelfth Night’ by the talented cast of Go People. June and July have seen Wimbledon tennis on the big screen under the Raj tent celebrated with a glass of bubbly in one hand and fresh strawberries in the other. And, of course, let’s not forget the dog show for our fabulous four-legged friends including rosettes, prizes and the ultimate ‘paw trophy’ as well as the legendary members parties with a plethora of enchanting themes. With the return of lighter and longer evenings, the wonderful outdoor season at Home House beckons and we look forward to seeing you in The Garden soon! s the crisp, sunny mornings drag us out of winter, it is safe to say spring is on its way. The frantic run to the gym in order to burn off the excess of Christmas is just a distant memory. With an urge to explore an iconic location I head out of the reception of Home House embarking on the short stroll towards Manchester Square, home to the magnificent Wallace Collection. The building itself is draped with a rich history, conjuring up thoughts of carriages that once arrived for parties held by its past inhabitants. The Collection was bequeathed by Lady Wallace to Britain in 1897 and has been open to the public and free to visit ever since. Once entering the building and ascending the grand marble and iron staircase you arrive at the start of what could only be described as a labyrinth of extravagantly decorated rooms and home of The Laughing Cavalier and Les Hasards Heureux de L’escarpolette, creating a spectacular and thoughtprovoking collection. My favorite room named the Two Views of Venice contains one of the most captivating collections of Canaletto’s work you will have the pleasure of viewing. It shows the city of love in full vibrancy and colour. It brings back wonderful memories I hold of the city and leaves me craving Italian food. With food in mind, it’s time to return to Home House and enjoy a glass of champagne in the Drawing Rooms. Still thinking of the intricate works of Canaletto, I order the Burrata and start planning my next holiday. Venice, I’m on my way! THE THREE GRACES of

Home House

A

mongst the panoply of the societies within our Club, nestle these three Goddesses... the Creative Writing Society, the Book Club and the Poetry Salon – otherwise known as the Three Graces. Arguably and ironically, we are all fused to words in a way that no one in history has ever been. It’s quite a thought. Practically upon waking, the next thought may well be that slice of technology, that screen whether table-displayed or carried deftly in a bag.... Our Three Graces more than prove that words cannot die.

The Creative Writing Society Stuck for a word? Not sure? Think you are sure? Home House’s Creative Writing Society elicits such flagrant, fragrant talent, it really is rather beautifully outrageous. Wallflowers become flowers of will. Prose, poetry, diary entries, tracts of journalism, monologues, and dialogues – all have made an appearance from practically the very beginning of Home House. Ever popular, enthusiasts respond to the carefully chosen title of the month and all are welcome – whether those who have penned something, want to discuss a piece they have discovered or simply come to listen. But in the case of this last, it doesn’t stay that way for long as discussion is passionate and energetic. This is not a class, rather an atmospheric room – usually The Etruscan Room in House 20. The evenings prove to be most convivial and educative. The same title is tackled in so many different ways, each literary offering so much about the writer. Who knows... we may one day have a Home House book of a selection of our work?

The Book Club Obviously a magnet for those who enjoy discussing the prose of others and in the case of this club it is always a novel or a selection of short stories. Past exemplars have included, George Orwell, Agatha Christie, Virginia Woolf, Scott Fitzgerald, Bret Easton Ellis, Martin

32

Home House

Amis and recently, Colette. December (like the Creative Writing Society) has no specific choice and attendees are invited to suggest a book they have always loved to discuss with friends. Everyone in the group eventually gets to choose and it is always fun to see who will recommend what. So whilst many go for even a bestseller, I may request everyone to plunge into Thomas Hardy. So, variety there most certainly is! Sometimes this club hosts a Q&A session in addition to the usual meeting. Last year we had Alexander Newley speaking about his life as a transatlantic painter of stars of stage and screen (and this includes a portrait of his mother, Joan Collins). Our Book Club reminds us of the importance and allure of books and the way you can very easily be hooked – and be proud to call yourself a Home House Book Club bookworm!

The Poetry Salon T.S.Eliot once said that ‘Poetry communicates before it is understood.’ How very true. Poetry is a vehicle, a fire, a desire, a stance, a performance on the page and then of course, a performance on the stage, to an enwrapped audience. Our Poetry Salon is an explosion of delights. Held in the iconic Music Room – in shades of apple, mint and woodpecker green many times reflected by the strategic mirrors and partnered by dancing candlelight, those performing, those listening know that these evenings are very special indeed. Past readers have included such a mixed velvet purse – Sebastian Horsley, Laurence Isaacson, Chris Eubank, Fenella Fielding, Diane Pacitti, Graham Roos, Deanna Moss and so many more. Oh and I’ve been known to do a turn or two. Again, a theme is presented and all invited to weave some original magic for the pleasure of the excited audience. Intimate though these evenings are, the attendance can be so enthusiastic to challenge convention. One night the Salon saw some 120 excited souls! And do you think that poetry has to be a staid affair? Think again, when sometimes, the room is almost blue with purposeful naughtiness!

STORYTELLING: The #1 Skill of All Successful Entrepreneurs

W

e all love a good story. Perhaps for you it’s the suspense and rollercoaster of emotions of an action movie or the page turning intrigue of a novel. We can’t wait to see what happens next as we immerse ourselves and drift into another world. However, many entrepreneurs and business owners don’t see stories as a tool to drive their business and win over investors. Many find greater comfort just using logic to pitch their business. However, when used wisely stories can be employed to engage emotions, change attitudes and persuade, and, importantly, inspire action.

LEARNING STORIES

I recall Linda (not her real name), a business owner with big ambitions. When we first met she expressed her frustration that she wasn’t able to clearly articulate her firm’s proposition to new potential investors. Linda then shared her business plan with me. It looked really well thought through: detailed analysis of competitors, market trends and financials. To her it was all reassuringly data driven and she wondered why the numbers just didn’t speak for themselves. I then asked her how her children learnt about the world when they were young. She was silent for a few moments and I think a little perplexed why I should ask such a question when what was top of her mind was getting investors excited about her business. Her response was one word: stories. It was her light-bulb moment. She hadn’t thought of how she might use narratives for business aims. She then asked: “But how can I convert my logical business pitch into a story?”

BECOMING A STORYTELLER

A reasonable question, to which I responded: “How would a documentary film maker explain your business proposition; how would an artist, a creative writer, a teacher or a customer do the same?” This type of thinking was new for Linda. However, together we managed to lift her business plan off the page and turn it into an inspiring future story that summarised where she planned her business to be in five years. At first, Linda felt nervous using storytelling rather than her more customary factual approach, but when she saw how facts and numbers can be wrapped in the narrative to make them more memorable, and how people easily engaged with her stories her nervousness evaporated.

If using the narrative is something you seldom do, then use these dos and don’ts to help get you started: I. What motivated you to start your business? II. What is the big problem that your business overcomes and what made you decide to solve this problem? III. What life experiences have you had that set you apart as an entrepreneur. Theatre Act!

Hanaa Foura speaks with Beth Hitchcock to hear all about the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

C

an you please tell us a little about yourself and your background? I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked at a range of arts organisations on both sides of the Atlantic, helping to make theatre more accessible in one way or another, predominately through fundraising. I really believe that theatre has the power to be a force for change, and I am passionate about allowing as many people as possible to experience that. Before I joined the Open Air Theatre, I was at RADA Business, raising money for the drama school through corporate training schemes and, prior to that, I was actually living in Oakland, California devising events and programmes that connected performing arts with civic change. I’m incredibly lucky to get to work in the industry that I love.

What encouraged a move to the Open Air Theatre? Having been an audience member at the Open Air Theatre, seen the quality of work, the range of productions created and experienced what a magical place it is to walk into, I jumped at the opportunity to work here. As the Partnerships and Events Manager, and a maternity cover for Marianne Richardson, who has been at the theatre for 7 years, I raise essential income that enables us to keep producing innovative, bold theatre. As we’re a relatively small permanent team, you have an unparalleled chance here to get close to the work and engage with a real breadth of people – and working in fundraising means I love to talk, so that’s pretty ideal! It’s a real gift to come to work each day as I’m able to see the real difference that the money we raise makes.

Why do you think the concept of an open air theatre is working so well in London? Every production here has to be created in such a unique way, because each has to be shaped to the outdoor environment. Also, because we don’t have the conventional trappings of a theatre such as wings, or a fly space for scene changes, every decision has to be carefully thought through. Similarly, whilst lighting augments an evening performance beautifully, for a matinee performance in the afternoon sunlight, it’s a completely different story. It means that a show that’s created here is entirely bespoke to the space. Being outside, every individual performance is unique because the weather and temperature at that specific moment influences everyone involved, from the actors on stage to the audience watching. No two performances are the same which I find really exciting! What are your plans for 2019? We’re really excited for all that’s in store for 2019, and there are certainly elements this summer that will mark this season as different from the last. We have Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Our Town opening our season, and we’re excited about building our relationship with the English National Opera from last year, with this year’s opera, Hansel and Gretel. We don’t normally produce Shakespeare in two consecutive years but as As You Like It was so well received last season, we’ve decided to follow it up with another of the Bard’s signature works; A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which marks seven years since we last produced this play. And, of course, Jesus Christ Superstar was so successful here at the theatre in 2016 and 2017 (and in fact, will be coming to the Barbican this summer ahead of a two year American tour!), that we’ve chosen another Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical for this season, Evita, which is proving to be our highest selling production to date.

plan effectively, create a realistic timeline and, hopefully, ensure no element is forgotten about. Lastly; communication! An event is only as successful as your conversations with everyone making it happen and it’s definitely a team effort to pull events like ours off, and I’m lucky to work with some fantastic colleagues. A calm demeanour on the day is always handy for those last minute curveballs! What do you do if it rains or there is a sudden change of weather during the performance? We are very much at the behest of the British summer! Though, having said that, we lose very few performances; in 2018 we only lost five performances out of 150 so it doesn’t have quite the impact you’d imagine. We’ll never cancel a show ahead of time, and rely heavily on a variety of weather apps to keep us up to date with the likelihood of rainfall. It may be we need to delay the start time until a shower has passed, or have a short break mid-act but, actually, we often find that some of the most striking moments can happen with less than ideal weather. Watching Jesus’ crucifixion in Jesus Christ Superstar as the rain began to fall was a deeply moving experience and not one we’re likely to forget any time soon. At the Open Air Theatre, we say there’s no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing choices!

Can you tell us about the new Rehearsal Studios department? Our project, RECREATE, sought to provide major improvements to the theatre’s rehearsal facilities and catering provision. As a charity that receives no public subsidy, we are always striving to find new incomegenerating streams and the new Regent’s Park Rehearsal Studios do exactly that. The gorgeous new spaces enable us to not only host fantastic events for our supporters, but also hold all rehearsals for our productions on site, as Photography by David Jensen well as hire out the facilities to others within the arts This is quite unique to London; do you have plans to and culture community during our off-season. The new expand outside of the city? purpose built kitchens have allowed us to expand and develop our Our theatre is unique in that it is a purpose built theatre for the catering operation, enhancing the exceptional service standards already outdoors with a properly seated auditorium for the audience. And so, delivered. We’re really thrilled with the final product and thankful to all it isn’t something that could be easily replicated elsewhere. However, those who could make it happen. our ambition is that our productions can have a life after the Park, and to this end, we have produced several UK tours of shows that have How do the different months vary for full time employees thrived here at Regent’s Park and, most recently, Jesus Christ Superstar once the theatre season finishes? played a season at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2018. When one season into the Open Air Theatre in Central Park, New York, which was a closes we have time to examine and evaluate how things went, but we’re fantastic experience for all involved. then immediately building the next season with a whole new set of plays and artists. Safe to say, there’s never a dull moment here at the theatre! What are your top tips for executing a successful event? We love welcoming all our corporate supporters, including Home Anything else you would like to add? Property Management - Are you seeking a trusted and exceptionally experienced property manager who you can trust to manage your assets in London? Lornham was established 7 years ago as a family run company to offer a highly tailored service with an array of property skills to developers, property investors, homeowners and landlords in London. Finding practical solutions, they can fulfil all that is required to manage either investment property or a client’s home in London. Our portfolio ranges from managing a 1 bedroom buy to let flat to managing a Penthouse in South Kensington which serves as a Pied a Terre for a HNW client. Lornham’s aim is to ensure their clients receive the best possible care during their property journey and this is demonstrated by not only repeat business, but organic growth from multiple referrals by existing clients. Dominic Wertheimer, Director and founder of the business recalls one of their earliest client stories that perfectly details how Lornham personalise and exceed the service and expectations of a client’s demands. ‘A local solicitor (in Portman Square) called to explain she had a client from Hong Kong completing on a home in Chelsea who required assistance with the handover. Due to their busy schedule they were not able to come to London but required a person of trust to handle everything on their behalf. As well as snagging issues with the developer, the client required assistance with sourcing and managing an interior designer. Once the client arrived for completion, Lornham had completed the snagging issues and presented 3 interior designers to the new homeowner who could fulfil the interior design required to personalise the house into a home. Upon completion of these works the client retained Lornham to manage the house. The client visits 2-3 times a year and Lornham ensure his home is maintained to the highest standard, ready for him (or his guests) at any time’.

Trust is the key to enable and grow any relationship but especially a business one. This particular client was in the process of acquiring properties for investment in London and Lornham has undertaken the property management overseeing the complete lettings process as well as taking care of all maintenance issues within the portfolio. Now the client has one point of contact in London for all his properties which are spread across London.

‘Lornham provides the most professional yet personal property management service so their clients have peace of mind about their properties wherever they may be in the world’ Whether a property owner is an investor (landlord) or homeowner, you can rely on Lornham to provide a highly professional yet personalised service. Our office is on the prestigious Portman Estate set within the heart of Marylebone and we welcome visitors to come and have a chat about how we can help them manage their property in London

INVESTING in PROPERTY Chantelle Oriani speaks with Martin Bikhit, Managing Director of Berkshire Hathaway HomesServices Kay & Co, who recently became the exclusive UK affiliate of Warren Buffett’s global real estate brokerage, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.

P

lease tell us about yourself and your background? The company was founded by my father back in 1982 as Kay & Co. I joined him in 1997 straight from school and have been there ever since. It was a very small company when I joined, with only three people; We’ve grown with the business which now staffs over 25 people – and still growing.

What does your role as Managing Director entail? I’m still very much involved with the running of the business, from day-to-day sales and lettings through to its overall strategic direction. I tend to personally manage the upper end of the market sales, usually the 10 million plus properties. I also oversee our key accounts which include The Crown Estate, Portman Estate, Royal London Asset Management, AXA Real Estate Investment Mangement and British Land PLC. It’s really important for me to be hands-on with the team and not to lose sight of the front line of the business. I tend to spend half a day at each of our branches and ensure I’m always there to support my team. What advice would you give to individuals looking to invest in property in London? The market has been affected as a result of Brexit, prices have dropped – there’s no question about that. Demand isn’t where it used to be, however this situation does create a wealth of opportunity for potential buyers. There are properties which I could have sold for a higher price, which you can now buy for significantly less. In my personal opinion, central London particularly, irrespective of what happens with Brexit, I believe there will always be a strong demand for property in London. Uncertainty kills any market, property being one of them, so once there is clarity and direction and Brexit is out of the way, I envision a rally in the market again due to so much pent up demand. What do you think of people/businesses moving out of London due to Brexit? Businesses may be moving some back office departments abroad, but they are not moving businesses out of the UK entirely. Citibank has just purchased its office in Canary Wharf for 1.1 billion, a great example of the bank’s commitment to London and the UK. If you are looking to do something, now would be the time to do it. Especially if you are upsizing, your net gain is actually going to be better than what it would have been 2-3 years ago. There will always be people who need to sell, and if this is the case, they should use this to utilise a good buy – it would be an investment with a longer-term reward. As we all know as a buyer confidence returns, seller confidence follows suit. Please tell me about your recent partnership with Berkshire Hathaway? Being part of one of Warren Buffett’s companies is amazing for us and a great brand to have in front of our name. The brand is still strongly associated with Warren Buffett in Europe and the US, so we are working to build a strong presence in the UK as their sole affiliates. We put forward our proposal and we were selected from a fair number

38

of other suitors, including much bigger brands with a far greater number of offices. Berkshire Hathaway is a culture driven business and it wanted its partners to be a business it can work with collaboratively. Being a family run business, there is a very similar culture in both companies, which was imperative to its senior leadership. Secondly, was our desire to grow, we are striving to grow and build our brand, office network and market share. Finally, coachability was hugely important to them; although my father and I are well established in the business – we don’t know everything. We are still eager and open to learning new innovations and ways of working. Do you feel like it has made a difference to your business so far? Yes, definitely. We’ve had a really positive reaction in the press and now we will be looking at our growth strategy. Our aim is to now have comprehensive coverage of prime central London and make sure we have got the four corners of Hyde Park covered and North West London. We have three offices currently, Hyde Park/Bayswater, Marylebone and King’s Cross. King’s Cross is on the ground floor of the Google building, which is a hugely developing area for tech and media companies. What do you love about Home House? It’s a super relaxed atmosphere, a great building architecturally and a beautiful space to spend time in. I love that you can come here in a suit and tie or shorts and flip flops – they have a very relaxed dress code which suits me well. It’s very unique in that respect. The garden is amazing to use in the summer, there’s really nothing like it around. Of course, the famous parties are never to be missed! www.kandco.com

A Cut Above the Rest Charlie Mitchell speaks with Tony Lutwyche, expert bespoke suit tailor and founder of Lutwyche – the luxury British suit outfitter. Lutwyche produces hand-crafted menswear, in the traditional English artisan manner, based in Mayfair, New York and available at Saks Fifth Avenue.

H

ow did you enter the world of bespoke tailoring? When I was growing up, my grandfather had a Savile Row tailor-made Leander Club jacket which I often enjoyed trying on. When I joined the army at Sandhurst, I had to buy three uniforms for my regiment – which would cost close to a whole years’ salary! If you’re spending this amount on something, you really want it to have the ‘wow’ factor – which I never felt was received. I thought I could provide a much better service and improve the quality of suits. Can you tell us about the Tony Lutwyche Academy? We rescued our workshop in 2006 and realised that if we wanted longevity in the business, we needed to invest in youngsters and their career development, which is why the Academy came to light. We have budding tailors in our workshop who learn first-hand the steps of tailoring the best, bespoke suits. The Tony Lutwyche Academy is similar to an apprenticeship scheme, however we take on the staff and pay them a proper salary. The army excels in their training programmes and I think this is where my dedication to the Academy stems from. What do you find most interesting when making a bespoke suit for a client? One of the joys that we have is that our clients are varied, from 25-year-old musicians to 65-year-old CEOs. There are details which I personally think look good and naturally we will gently steer clients that way. Obviously, there are some commonalities; however we have such a varied client base that everything is different. It’s the lack of consistency in terms of requests that makes bespoke tailoring interesting. It’s the fact that everybody is different and every request is different – that’s what I love.

42

Home House

Do you have any thoughts about the recent trends of tech being integrated into clothes in the 21st century? When I first took over the workshop, the exciting thing was making holes to put the wires for your headphones through your jacket, which was a short-lived trend. You can easily spot a suit that was made before those white earbuds came in! In terms of merging clothing with technology in that way, we tend to focus on making elegant attire which is not particularly technical. What is the main differentiator of the tailoring in a Lutwyche suit versus a suit from another tailor? The key is how we make our suits – we have the only workshop of its kind in the UK. In terms of evolving and using softer canvases which gives the suit more movement and makes it lighter. Most people are used to traditional Savile Row suits, which are heavier and thicker in weight. When they come in and try on one of our ready to wear pieces – it’s almost like they aren’t wearing a jacket. In British tailoring, everyone has to keep up to date with the trends, so you can’t rest on your laurels, you have to keep finding ways to improve. Is there anything you want people to know about the Lutwyche brand they may not already know? Obviously we want people to know about us, but at the same time, we don’t need everybody in the world to know what we do. We’re happy to have people understand what we’re doing just by supporting the work we do in our Academy, not even necessarily buying a suit. A lot of our business is through word of mouth, so our client base is almost like a little club. It’s quite nice having that sort of close-knit community, with a truly loyal client base that we have established over the years.

r. h.c. Petra Dӧring created MAGNETIX Wellness in 1999 by combining elegant jewellery and wellness products with the healing power of magnets. The products use long lasting neodymium magnets with healing properties that treat various ailments. Magnetic therapy dates back to ancient Greek practices to help improve overall health and well-being. This alternative method of healing and pain relief not only improves overall health, but can treat a variety of conditions like arthritis, menstrual pain, sports injuries and migraines. While many have long questioned the effectiveness of magnetic therapy, Petra says that magnets increase the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the cells which results in the elimination of toxins which could be the cause of pain. The application of a magnetic field to an area of the body could affect the way in which blood flows in that area. Improvement in the blood flow to that area promotes healing. Magnets raise circulation and regulate the blood having an impact on the healing process of swelling, inflammation, scars, and injuries. MAGNETIX Wellness offers a variety of different magnetic wellness products ranging from jewellery to sleep masks and shoe insoles. Each jewellery piece is inspired by modern and timeless fashion trends, offering a wide range of styles. As one of the best sellers, the flexi bracelet is both stylish and comfortable for everyday wear. There are also products like the silicone power heart, which can be used anywhere on the body for pain or to give extra strength and energy during stressful situations. Petra believes that simple products can have a big effect with the help of these powerful magnets. With products for both men and women, the healing power of MAGNETIX Wellness is for everyone including pets and children. www.magnetix-wellness.com

THE LIMINAL

S

inger-songwriter, sound therapist, and Qi Gong teacher, Tallulah Rendall combines the sounds of healing with rock ‘n’ roll and electronica in her fourth album release, The Liminal. Tallulah became one of the first UK artists to use crowdfunding to fund all of her albums which include Libellus, Alive,The Banshee and The Moon, and The Liminal. As a spiritual and environmental activist, she uses her music to inspire change. Maintaining her own health and well-being is extremely important to Tallulah through Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and nutrition. This inspired her to support the well-being of others by teaching song-writing and performance, one-on-one sound therapy and hosting workshops to help people connect to their own creativity. With the release of her fourth album, The Liminal, in April 2019, Tallulah has also curated an immersive sensory gig to accompany the album on tour. The Liminal was co-produced with Aaron Ahrends, and is a mix of vocals, gongs, Himalayan singing bowls and electronica. The album reflects an energetic and liminal space she goes to when she meditates or creates. Her album was designed to inspire and to heal. Similar to her first three albums, she will release her album in a beautiful hardcover book that includes lyrics, the story behind the album, and photos that represent the songs in their essence and energy. www.tallulahrendall.com

TRULY INSIGHTFUL

Christina Raptis finds a visit to Optegra Eye Hospital London very eye-opening!

El

veryone loves a gift. And of all the gifts in the world – there is surely none more precious than the gift of sight! Having been a contact lens wearer for the past 12 years of my life – I know the hassles of wearing contacts and the daily struggle of having to put them in before I can see the world. I was truly fed up and knew now was the time I had to do something about it. I researched the leading clinics in London and stumbled upon Optegra and when I heard about their treatment opportunities, I jumped at the chance with my eyes wide open! The state-of-the-art Optegra Eye Hospital London, on Queen Anne Street, occupies six floors of two adjacent houses. Behind the stunning Edwardian and Victorian facades, the buildings have been transformed into a fully-equipped hospital with specialist ophthalmic facilities, offering a full spectrum of procedures led by renowned consultant ophthalmic surgeons. Treating every eye condition, they are able to truly treat the ‘A to Z’ of eye healthcare. So whatever condition or symptoms a patient presents them with, the expertise can be found under one roof right here just off Harley Street. After an in-depth consultation, my surgeon Mr Alex Shortt (pictured) informed me that laser treatment was not ideal in my case as I have astigmatism and my prescription was too strong. He advised that a laser treatment was not suitable as it would have left my cornea so thin, it would not have been safe for my future eye health. While most other ‘high street clinics’ wouldn’t have been able to treat me and would have to turn me away, Optegra and Mr Shortt were able to recommend an alternative treatment, implantable contact lenses (ICL), which provide excellent vision for those who are not suitable for laser. This involves the insertion of a phakic IOL (intraocular lens) – a tiny, soft lens which is placed in your eye between your natural lens and the iris, or between the iris and the cornea. It’s like wearing a contact lens inside your eye instead of on the surface of it. The ICL is practically invisible and can be removed by your Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon if necessary – making the procedure reversible should things not go as planned – unlike, of course, laser surgery which is irreversible. This reversible factor alone pacified most of my concerns and worries. The investment at Optegra in latest technologies and their breadth of expertise means that whatever your individual eye symptoms, the surgeons may be able to find a suitable option to treat you. With Mr Shortt’s recommendation and reassuring manner I was so excited to start the next steps for my complimentary procedure that I immediately arranged an appointment for my surgery for the following week!

After a few sleepless nights thinking about the procedure my worries were immediately put to ease when I arrived for my surgery. The beautiful spa like facilities and genuinely friendly nurses ensured that I was comfortable whilst they explained the procedure, informed me about aftercare, and the dos and don’ts post-surgery. Then it was time to be taken into the theatre. Mr Shortt explained every step of the operation and calmed me further with his amazing empathy. Anaesthetic eye drops were administered and once they’d taken effect, he began the treatment which involves the insertion of a permanent contact lens inserted through a microscopic hole. Incredibly, the whole procedure takes a ridiculously quick six to seven minutes per eye. I was then taken to a recovery suite to relax until I felt I was completely ready to return home – this was roughly 30 minutes. Blurry vision and sensitivity to light are present after the operation but within a matter of hours my vision was incredible. I was informed to avoid bright lights and wear sunglasses for a few days as my eyes and brain adjusted to my new perfect vision. I returned the next day for a follow-up consultation where the outcome of my surgery was assessed and I was provided further expert aftercare advice. Perhaps it may seem too much to call it a miracle but that’s how I feel. Within a few days my sight was better that it has ever been and further tests revealed that I was in fact better than 20/20 vision. For those who have ever considered treatment – be it laser or ICL – do not procrastinate or worry as I did for years. Book a free consultation with the team at Optegra and I promise your experience will be both professional and life changing. My vision is now beyond 20/20 – and I would happily give Optegra – for their service and professionalism 10/10! INSIDER KNOWLEDGE

tips from the experts on.. . LUXURY TRAVEL

1

“Luxury travel is about buying experiences and for every luxury holiday that is chosen and arranged perfectly, the memories should stay with you long after you are home. If you always book with a niche luxury tour operator it means you will deal with someone who will have stayed at the resort and can give you personal, bespoke advice on why to go there and what to do. It really depends on what kind of person you are and what you are really looking for from your trip and is not a case of one size fits all. It’s important to take a detailed brief from clients and tailor it exactly to their personal needs. Booking premium holidays with a tour operator also means your holiday is ATOL protected so if anything should go wrong it gets sorted for you.” ◊ Melissa Barker – Owner Travelbeam Luxury Holidays

STORING FINE WINE

3

“I absolutely love IO R blues, but this season I have found another love for green colours, particularly sage, which has been prevalent on the men’s catwalks. I consistently use fine wools in our work as they work well for both upholstered and architectural elements. They can delicately catch the light and almost glow.” ◊ Tim Murray – Creative Director at Helen Green

S

“Wine for long term investment needs to be stored in the right facilities for two reasons: firstly, wines should be stored ‘under bond’ to avoid paying excise duty and VAT on the wine, which cannot be reclaimed. Second, provenance is key to a wine’s future value.” ◊ Simon Staples – Sales Director Fine Wine, Berry Bros & Rudd

ENHANCED SKINCARE

4

“To maximise skin health, I would always recommend alternating between regular skin peels such as the Skintech TCA Peels and micro needling treatments such as Dermapen. Such treatments cause rejuvenation of the skin at a much deeper level than your standard surface level treatments. As you age, collagen levels naturally deplete in your skin and our cells begin to switch off. Anything that stimulates your cells can aid the ageing process, keeping the skin looking more youthful and radiant.” ◊ Dr Mayoni – Guest Doctor at Epilium & Skin

BUYING A BESPOKE SUIT

5

“Make sure you do your research online before coming in. You should have a good idea of when and where you want to wear the suit and its purpose. Being clear about the purpose of the suit helps to avoid any confusion. When going in for the first consultation, ask about lead times for fittings in case you have any special occasion you need the suit for. Also, ask to see some finished garments when you come in to discuss the suit. Although many tailors have a particular house style and cut, they will try to accommodate your wishes so do not be afraid to ask for what you want.” ◊ Anda Rowland – Director of Marketing - Anderson and Sheppard

7

PURCHASING A BOAT

“Consider the boat’s interior first. It is easy to get caught up in the glamour of having the sleekest boat exterior, but it’s all for nothing if not wrapped around a well-considered interior layout that maximises flow, space and light.” ◊ Andrew Pope – Head of Design - Fairline Yachts

8 INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE

6

“There’s something special about a home with rarity value; not only is it linked to desirability but value too. Whether it’s down to a property’s heritage architecture or its period features, identifying these prized properties could be a savvy move as they have enduring appeal.” ◊ Claire Reynolds – Director, Savills London Residential

WELLBEING

“Each day close your eyes for five minutes and move your attention from the outside world to your own inner presence. Be interested! What’s happening within you, with a little viewing, is fascinating.” ◊ Emma Mills – Meditation Expert and the author of the new 24 hr meditation guide book

Magical MAURITIUS Azzy Asghar visits the Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa

I

have a dear friend named Thierry who sounds like Sacha Distel and is better looking than Emmanuel Macron! Couple with this his wavy light-brown hair and bright blue eyes and you could be forgiven for thinking he was born in downtown St Tropez! But alas, he was born and raised in the even more exotically beautiful Mauritius and has spent almost two decades extolling the islands endless virtues to me. Well, it took a while but I finally listened and very recently I was fortunate enough to be invited to visit the Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa, a five-star oasis of tranquillity on an island paradise, and discover its natural beauty for myself. The resort was recently named Indian Ocean’s Leading Luxury Villa Resort at the 2018 World Travel Awards. Mauritius is an Indian Ocean island nation, renowned for its turquoise waters, lagoons and reefs. The mountainous interior includes Black River Gorges National Park which boasts some of nature’s most verdant rainforests, cascading waterfalls and challenging hiking trails for the more adventurous. Me, I was headed straight for the golden beaches that were 10 metres away from my very own, very private villa – thank you Maradiva! Located east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a small African island nation with a population of just over 1 million

64

Home House

residents, which, believe it or not makes it the most populous nation on the continent! The island captures the essence of East meets West. Nowhere is this more evident than in their food and culture which are both heavily influenced by Indian and French cultures. The Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa is a byword for ultimate luxury. Upon landing we were greeted by a chauffeur and a gleaming RollsRoyce which was to whisk us to our island escape. The scenic drive to the resort allowed us to get a preview of the stunning beaches, bright turquoise waters and incredible green landscapes that we would be admiring all week. Upon arrival at the resort, the friendly welcoming staff offered freshly squeezed juice and scented cold towels to refresh ourselves after a long day of travelling. After check-in we were taken by golf cart to our Luxury Villa. All of the villas are secluded and surrounded by their own tropical gardens – each is simply breathtaking. Between the open air concept, private pool and neutral colour palettes, each villa provides guests with their own personal, luxurious haven within the idyllic resort. Using design influences by Hermès, the natural elegance of the villas is felt throughout. Neutral shades of beige,

grey, and orange beautifully complements the lush green landscapes along the perimeter. Whether you want to sprawl out on a sunbed next to your private pool, take an outdoor garden shower or a short walk to the beach, there are endless options for relaxation. The world-class dining options that the resort has to offer made for a truly epicurean culinary experience during our stay. Quality and freshness are not only a priority at the Maradiva, each restaurant sources their produce from the on-site karo du chef, a mini organic farm and fresh food deliveries weekly. Our first night at the Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa was spent enjoying an exquisite Indian dinner at Cilantro. With its romantic design, Cilantro serves the finest of modern Indian cuisine. Whether you would like to enjoy dinner, appetisers beforehand or after dinner drinks, Cilantro’s lounge and dining room allows guests to indulge at all phases of their evening. The resort offers you the chance to just enjoy nature and relax or to be as active as you desire. For those looking for a rush of adrenaline in the midst of their relaxing week there are endless complimentary resort activities including; water-skiing, windsurfing and snorkelling. For the real thrill seeker, Seakarting is an absolute must try – a cross

between a Jet Ski and a mini speed boat – the Seakarts can be rented by hour or for a half day tour. Enjoy the array of Mauritius wildlife and beautiful coastal views while zooming at speeds up to 70 km/hr. For our second adventurous excursion, we ventured a bit deeper, 35 metres to be exact, for a submarine tour. Get a glimpse into life under the sea in Mauritius, with one-of-a-kind views of coral reefs, ocean wildlife and maybe even a shipwreck! For those looking for a unique rather than a traditional table service option – the resort offers a more interactive dining experience with their Teppan restaurant. Prepared and served Teppanyaki style (hence the fitting title) by renowned Mauritian Chef Kelly, enjoy delectable Japanese, Thai and Indo-Chinese food in a social and convivial atmosphere. Between the excellent service, epicurean cuisine, incredible villas and once in a lifetime experience, the Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa should be at the top of your travel bucket list. It is now on mine for a return visit – and what makes it absolutely so is the people – the Mauritians are truly welcoming and gentle souls who genuinely enjoy service and take pride in showing you their beautiful island – touche Thierry! www.maradiva.com

TURKISH D-LIGHT Christina Raptis visits the breathtaking D Maris Bay Resort in Southern Turkey

T

urkey is firmly at the top when it comes to compiling my list of favourite travel destinations in the world. The mix of East and West is as alluring as the country’s stunning natural beauty and numerous archaeological sites. To complement the hustle and bustle of life in vibrant Istanbul, there are many idyllic escapes, especially on the south coast, where you can relax and unwind. After a short four hour flight we touched down in Dalaman where the journey to D Maris Bay began. A chauffeured car was ready and waiting to whisk us away through winding roads nestled by luscious greenery to the secluded mountain top where the resort majestically sits. Those with a penchant for travelling in style could opt for a private helicopter which lands on the resort within 30 minutes! No matter how you get there – it is heaven on earth! Nestled in the hills of the Datça Peninsula, D Maris Bay is a peaceful oasis where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas converge, a remote enclave that guarantees complete seclusion and tranquillity. This diverse setting is like no other – surrounded by volcanic mountain ranges, verdant pine forests and countless small islands it is like nothing you could ever imagine. Part of the Mytha Hotel Anthology, a collection of unique properties which are linked together by the eternal spirit of the Mediterranean, D Maris Bay encompasses and exudes all that the Mediterranean has to offer. Upon entering the hotel lobby an endless view of the sea and surrounding mountains takes your breath away. The lobby itself is also truly impressive, decorated in luxurious contemporary décor showcasing modern art and staffed by an enthusiastic and friendly

66

Home House

team waiting to greet you. Each guest room offers a private sanctuary amongst contemporary décor but the piece de resistance is the infinity pool style bathtub with panoramic views of the endless sea and surrounding mountainside. After eyeing the turquoise water from the moment we arrived, it was about time to head down to the beach – connected by a lovely wooden funicular or you can choose the active option and take a 196 step descent. As Epicureans we were spoilt for choice when it came to choosing where to dine as the resort offers five amazing restaurants. For lunch, there’s nothing better than Rüya – serving traditional Anatolian dishes and Turkish meze, it was the perfect spot to admire the glistening blue sea and experience authentic Turkish cuisine. Award-winning contemporary Japanese restaurant, Zuma, was the perfect late night dining spot as unlike all the other beachfront restaurants it is located on a terrace and overlooking the beautiful bay below. We enjoyed fresh sashimi and sushi, Zuma staples, as well as a mixture of delicious izakaya style dishes and, of course, their signature dish, miso-glazed black cod. Famed for his ‘Salt bae’ viral video, Nusret’s eponymous restaurant Nusr-Et serves exceptional dry-aged steaks in a relaxed atmosphere. Each course is presented with a tableside-show of skilled knife work, and their inventive dishes like blowtorched steak sushi are not to miss. Located on the beachfront, La Guerite, with sister restaurants in Cannes and St Barts, offers an exceptional twist on Mediterranean cuisine. We were spoilt for choice and enjoyed fresh watermelon and feta salad, traditional Turkish meze and fresh seafood all accompanied

by a gorgeous view of the crystal blue sea and loud beats from an energetic DJ. For an evening of traditional Greek music and a selection of authentic Greek dishes with a focus on fresh seafood head to Manos restaurant. We enjoyed the catch of the day along with authentic Greek salad, fresh octopus and, of course, a few glasses of ouzo! After indulging in all the epicurean eateries we were in need of a workout session and D Maris Bay’s Spa and Gym was the perfect place to burn off some of the calories we had consumed. The Bodyism Gym offers indoor and outdoor fitness spaces and we were lucky to meet personal trainer Jamie (who was amazing!). He showed us a range of personalised exercises to help improve our training regimes without the use of gym equipment – perfect for busy travellers like us. Apart from all the gastronomic delights, the true highlight of the resort are the five exceptionally beautiful beaches. Each private and secluded, you can only reach them by the resort’s private boat service, like a water taxi, which whisks you away from one beach to the other. My favourite of them all (if I had to choose!) is Silence Beach. Secluded within a small cove, the waters are turquoise blue and as clear as glass and as the name suggests it is the perfect spot for some must needed R&R. It’s truly nothing short from paradise. Once you’ve had enough relaxation on the beach why not explore the waters. The resort offers numerous water sport facilities, from water skiing to wakeboarding, windsurfing and catamaran sailing, as well as a certified dive centre. Kayak tours, paddle boarding and yachts are also available to explore the hidden coves and neighbouring Greek islands; Symi is just 25 minutes away. Aside from the natural beauty and incredible décor, it was the Turkish people and the staff’s exemplary service and truly warm welcome that made my visit even more memorable! I’m not sure if it’s the ‘done thing’ to have the same item on a bucket list twice – but if it’s accepted D Maris Bay would be there!

The villas are a private enclave perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing and secluded paradise, with access to a private clubhouse and pool. With multiple restaurants and lounges there is no reason to wander away from the resort. Andrea, their authentic Italian restaurant, transports your taste buds straight to old-world Italy. Spectacular ocean-side views wait on the outside heated terrace. Each day they hand-roll 17 varieties of pasta and toss together their handmade sauces using the freshest ingredients sourced locally and beyond. The cosy and laid-back environment at the Pelican Grill makes it the perfect dining spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This modern-American grill is headed by Chef Marc Johnson. The cuisine is a contemporary twist on classic dishes from wood-fired pizzas to butcher-cut steaks. The smoky braised short ribs, served alongside Brussels sprouts and pickled celery ribbons, are far from ordinary with a distinctive and unusual flavour combination. Perhaps the most jaw-dropping aspect of the resort is the Coliseum pool. As one of the world’s largest circular pools, it is truly a sight to see and experience. Reserve one of the 18 luxury poolside cabanas for spectacular views complete with a TV, music speaker, and complimentary refreshments. The Coliseum Pool and Grill also offers all day dining options with a poolside menu as well. The grill sits on the second floor overlooking the pool with glimpses of the ocean. The Great Room Social Lounge specialises in night time entertainment and a lively social scene. Drink inventive cocktails and nibble on small bites as you listen to current hits or a live DJ. The large booths make it one of the best places in the resort to watch the sunset. With the luxury, epicurean cuisine and impeccable service on offer, I can’t imagine basing myself anywhere but The Resort at Peilcan Hill if I wanted to enjoy the natural beauty of Orange County or even as a base to venture further afield. This truly is a small slice of heaven nestled between the ocean and hills of the OC. ◊ www.pelicanhill.com

Style never goes out of fashion Christina Raptis has high-expectations at the stunning Armani Hotel Dubai

O

nce you manage to get past the incredible location of the Armani Hotel Dubai – occupying the first eight floors of the world’s most iconic and tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, it is the simplicity of the hotel itself that takes your breath away. Giorgio Armani, in collaboration with Emaar Properties, opened the iconic hotel in 2010. Much like the synonymous clothing brand, the hotel’s understated elegance and very minimalist style showcases natural elements and soft tones to create a mood of both opulence and luxury. Armani himself oversaw all aspects of the hotel’s interiors and its aesthetics creating a serene and chic ambiance. The elegant and minimalist theme continues in the bedrooms, communal areas, restaurants and spa. All seamlessly tied together by the most amazing and attentive staff I’ve ever encountered in my many years as a travel journalist. Whether it be their specific job or not, each member of staff was ready and waiting to jump to attention with either a simple greeting, to help open a door, or to point you in the right direction. The 160 rooms range from a Deluxe Room to the Armani Ambassador Suite with your own private balcony – no matter which room you’re in, each features bespoke Armani furnishings, custom-created fabrics, floor-to-ceiling windows and iPads that control the 40-inch flat-screen televisions, lighting and curtains. The clean, minimalistic design continues throughout every room with each aspect thought about in great detail: from the Armani branded towels, and even monogrammed sugar cubes – no detail is overlooked! As you’d expect the award-winning Armani Spa is an oasis of serenity and elegance. Each guest receives a personal consultation from a spa therapist who develops a fully-tailored sensory experience, enhanced with bespoke, naturally fragranced Armani oils. After a relaxing massage enjoy a steam, sauna, or Hamman.

To further indulge guests can relax at their magnificent outdoor pool deck to enjoy the sun and stunning views of the surrounding city. The pool’s rooftop location offers panoramic views yet solitude from the hustle and bustle of the city below. As Epicureans we are no strangers to exquisite cuisine but we were spoilt for choice when it came to deciding where to dine at the hotel. Five different options will take you on a culinary journey from the heart of Italy to the flavours of Japan to the spices of India and onto the shores of Europe and the Mediterranean. Being at an iconic Italian owned hotel, we chose to experience traditional cuisine at Armani Ristorante. This is where Chef Federico Sanna excels himself and shows off his vast culinary repertoire. He prepared a gorgeous and bespoke truffle degustation menu for us where each dish was prepared with a truffle bias. From the beautifully presented Scallop Ceviche with white truffle to the Black Angus Beef Tataki with Puntarelle and white truffle – the menu was paired perfectly with Italian wines to accompany each course. After enjoying six courses – I had to leave room for the seventh and last, my favourite course – dessert! A pearlescent sphere was beautifully placed in the centre of the plate with a few shavings of truffle on top – once broken the inside was filled with pear chutney, Piemonte hazelnut mousse, and truffle ice cream – a truffle lover’s heaven. If you manage to tempt yourself away from the luxuries of the hotel you will find lush green surroundings, pedestrian-friendly

boulevards, and direct access to the Dubai Mall – the world’s largest and most visited entertainment destination welcoming over 80 million visitors annually, and offering more than 1,300 shops, an indoor aquarium and underwater zoo, ice rink and over 200 restaurants and cafes. Not to mention there is a direct view from the hotel of the Dubai fountain – the world’s largest choreographed fountain system. With hourly shows – head back to the hotel to enjoy the spectacular water display whilst sipping a cocktail on one of the many hotel’s bar and restaurant terraces. After three incredible days my stay at the Armani Hotel Dubai had to come to an end. From the moment I entered the towering lobby a few days earlier I knew I was in for something special and the friendly and attentive staff and welcome we received met and surpassed all my expectations. To borrow a quote from Giorgio Armani himself: “Elegance is not about being noticed, it’s about being remembered.” And it was the effortlessly simple elegance found throughout the hotel that I will always remember. Rooms at Armani Hotel Dubai start from 2,200 AED per room per night (approx. £469) subject to 10% municipality fee and 10% service charge. The rate is also subject to tourism Dirham fee of AED 20 per room per night. www.armanihoteldubai.com

Azzy Asghar escapes to Tenerife for a

THE SUN n average temperature of 22 degrees and year-round sunshine make Tenerife one of the most desired destinations in Europe with five million visitors every year. From never-ending beaches to lush forests, the island’s natural beauty makes it the perfect all-around destination. But all this was not what tempted me to visit this renowned tourist hotspot. What did tempt me was the opportunity to run in the International Marathon of Santa Cruz de Tenerife which was celebrating its 5th Anniversary. With an ideal climate and landscape, Tenerife has become a paradise for visitors to enjoy and compete in a variety of sports and leisure activities. Professionals come to Tenerife to train for elite events like the Tour de France or the Olympic Games on their vast network of roads with altitudes going up to 2,000 metres. However, athletic opportunities on the island aren’t limited to professionals. Visitors of all skill levels compete in sporting events and trials all throughout the year. Many choose to enjoy leisure activities with

A

friends and family while taking in the beautiful scenery and blue waters. Whichever kind of outdoor active experience you are in search of, Tenerife has it all. With 1,500 kilometres of trails, hiking is the most popular activity on the island and is practiced by 10 percent of visitors. The crystal clear waters of the sea attract visitors to participate in scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, windsurfing, kite surfing and free diving. Other popular land activities include cycling and golf or for thrill-seekers paragliding is a thrilling way of seeing all of Tenerife from the sky. Tenerife No Limits, a brand promoting Tenerife as the perfect outdoor gymnasium 365 days a year, offers a range of activities from recreational outdoor athletics to major sporting events. Tenerife No Limits groups together different amenities from companies that are relevant to what each visitor is looking for whether it’s an amateur leisure activity, or a sports professional looking for intensive training. They also recommend accommodation according to the specialisation in each sport or activity. Tenerife has incredibly prestigious competitive athletic events open to visitors from all over. of 2018 with a maximum of four thousand registered participants. The event offers three different racing distances including an 8km, a half marathon, and a full marathon. The race begins and ends in the Plaza de Espana de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The course runs alongside the sea as well as through parts of the urban city space of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. All three events use the same general course plan. However, the half marathon runs the exterior circuit along the coast, and the 8km runs the urban circuit through the city’s streets. Along the course are crowds of spectators cheering on the runners. This coastal route is ideal for runners of all experience to make their best times or to even test out running as a sport. I’m proud to say that “I came, I saw and although I didn’t conquer!” I did run a great time and loved my visit to this island paradise. Fabulous Fauchon

Christina Raptis visits the chic Parisian Fauchon L’Hôtel

R

enowned French gourmet food and delicatessen company, Fauchon became one of the most iconic gastronomic luxury brands after it was founded by Auguste Fauchon in 1886. As a brand that represents the epitome of French luxury and cuisine, it only made sense to create a new 5-star boutique hotel a stone’s throw from their original Parisian store. Fauchon L’Hôtel is a place where local Parisians and travellers alike can experience all things Fauchon in one magical place. Nestled in an historic Haussmann building designed by Parisian architect Richard Martinet, the modern aesthetics and hot pink details make the hotel a playful and creative space decorated with custom-designed artwork and décor. Their emphasis is on the pursuit of pleasure with a philosophy centred on creating a place where food is an art and life is for living. At the heart of all suites and rooms are original furnishings unique to the hotel designed by Atelier Paluel Marmont. Classic rooms showcase incredible views of Paris through large bright windows, and include touches of pink throughout. Experience what life is like living in a Parisian apartment in one of the deluxe suites with two separate rooms and ample space to relax. All hotel rooms and suites are equipped with a gourmet mini bar hidden away in a custom-designed pink armoire filled with so many complimentary delicacies from Fauchon which are customised prior to arrival depending on your savoury or sweet preferences and, of course, a bottle of pink champagne! Embark on a luxurious spa treatment at the Carita Beauty Spa with expert care in beauty, anti-aging and wellbeing. This intimate setting with various treatments including facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, hair styling and makeup application is the ultimate place for feeling radiant, serene and youthful. The hotel also offers a state-of-theart fitness centre which includes; treadmills, bikes, stair climbers and free weights. In true Fauchon style, they provide a variety of fruit waters, refreshing drinks, and healthy cereal snacks when guests need an extra boost

of energy. Expert jogging coaches are available to take you for a jog every morning and every evening through some of Paris’ most iconic neighbourhoods. With runs along the Avenue des Champs-Elysees and through Tuileries Garden you get to explore Paris in the most unique way with a personal guide. To get a taste of the gourmet delicacies famous to Fauchon, Le Grand Cafe Fauchon creates innovative dishes while paying homage to the founder through their commitment to pleasure and quality. Le Grand Cafe Fauchon is open for all day dining from early morning breakfast to late night meals. Indulge in Glam’Hours, their gourmet happy hour, where they serve unique tea infused cocktails. Every drink is accompanied by special pastries and chocolates whether at the bar or on the terrace. For dinner, choose from a variety of small plates to share or from executive chef Frederic Claudel’s signature dishes. The menu is separated by vegetable dishes, dishes from the sea, and dishes from the land. They also provide recommendations for which tea perfectly complements the flavours of each dish. Pair the Oolong blue tea with the duck fois gras, or the Jasmine green tea with the roasted scallops for the ultimate gourmet food experience. The chef ’s signature dish is a seafood risotto which is probably the best example I’ve tasted in my many years as a journalist – magnifique! A true epicurean always ends their evening with their famous French kiss – bisou bisou! Having travelled the world and explored hotels big and small, renowned and hidden gems – I can confidently say the experience here – led by the charming GM Jérôme Montanteme whose very personal passion and commitment to the hotel and especially customer service is – as they say – par excellence!

Tranquil Tourgéville

Chantelle Oriani visits the beautiful Les Manoirs de Tourgéville

Al

nostalgic treasure tucked away in the hills of Normandy, is how I would describe Les Manoirs. As you travel through the meandering drive to the hotel, you catch a glimpse of the charming manor houses, the panoramic restaurant and five circular buildings exquisitely built in architectural keeping with the region. The retreat is only a stone’s throw from the delightful town of Deauville, famous for the star studded Plages de Promenade and chocolate box style, Parisian boutiques. It’s no surprise the original owner and architect Claude Lelouch fell in love with the picturesque corner of Calvados when he was directing his movie ‘A Man and a Woman’. Bursting with history, for over 30 years Les Manoirs has been the relaxing retreat to the Oscar winning stars who were visiting for the Festival of American Cinema. In 2009, Claude appointed the prestigious luxury travel experts, Groupe Floirat, to take the reins on his legendary property. CEO and owner, Antoine Chevanne, was inspired by the particular intimacy and beauty of the grounds and decided to scatter small manor houses around the land. This is where the name was derived “Les Manoirs de Tourgéville”. Quaint, cosy and delightfully French, the accommodation is truly a home away from home – a feeling challenging to capture, Les Manoirs emanates a tasteful convivial atmosphere, perfect for family getaways, romantic escapes or catch-ups with friends. The amenities are accommodating to everyone, whether it’s cosying up in your manor room or relaxing in front of the crackling fireplace to enjoy a warming local Calvados or fine wine. Further amenities include a stunning spa for some much-needed R&R, an outdoor tennis court and fitness centre. The luxury Parisian beauty range Esthederm, is used throughout the spa facilities, handpicked by the CEO’s mother, Madame Chevanne. Something that resonated during the stay was the strong sense of family importance.

As a family-run business itself, Groupe Floirat treasure the importance of supporting other family run businesses and stocking local produce. The dining at Les Manoirs is quite something. The restaurant has stunning, panoramic views across the countryside and Head Chef Emmanuel Andrieu masterfully creates traditional Normandy delicacies with a twist of Southern French cuisine. We enjoyed dinner with General Manager, Yves-Marie Guguen, who expertly recommended some must-have dishes from the menu. We tried the langoustines cooked in aromatic hibiscus broth, Normandy beef marinated in smoked salt and served with local oysters, hot waffles topped with salted butter caramel sauce and freshly- whipped cream. All of which were exquisite and left us feeling suitably full! Set only ten minutes from the vibrant town of Deauville – also known as the ‘Paris of the North’ it’s ideally located for day trips with your friends or family. Guided through the beautiful streets by the Deauville Tourism Office, we were lucky enough to visit the famous race course, a 16th century manor and enjoy a leisurely lunch at the local Yacht Café. Scattered with designer boutiques and home to Coco Chanel’s original boutique, the shops and fashionable locals add to the character and charm of the area. A place worth visiting, not just for the sunny weather, beaches and quaint local towns, Les Manoirs de Tourgéville is truly an idyllic retreat for rest, relaxation and recovery from the outside world.

Enjoying some of the world’s greatest supercars, Azzy Asghar goes

California Cruising Lamborghini Huracan Performante

Engine: V10, 90°, MPI (Multi Point Injection)+ DSI Horsepower: 610hp Transmission: 7 speed dual clutch Acceleration: (0-62 mph) 2.9s Top Speed: 201 mph

The way the word ‘Lamborghini’ rings off the ear almost sums up the beautiful iteration that this car is. The Huracán Performante has been re-designed from the ground up to create the ultimate super car and has both aesthetics and performance unparalleled in its class. The car was designed with one specific goal – to be the fastest. It has been completely updated and is vastly different from other Huracan’s with improvements in the engine, steering performance and suspension. Patented ultra-lightweight materials contribute to the decrease in weight and the introduction of an innovative active aerodynamic system improves the performance level and driving experience. There are highlights all over this car. The engine is an aspirated V10 with the supercar achieving top speeds in excess of 200mph. Forged Composites front and rear spoilers aid the aerodynamics by increasing or decreasing the downforce as necessary. The alloy rims are even lighter than before and the addition of Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, add phenomenal grip. The engine is the clear highlight of this car, but both the exterior design and interior cabin live up to and exceed all expectations. The racing car inspired cockpit is beautifully ergonomic as you sit nestled in your seat which is draped Alcantara leather to add that touch of luxury and comfort. Each part of the interior is carefully planned to minimise weight and contribute to this supercars performance. There are near infinite customisation options in the interior to give you a personal touch and truly create your own dream car that is, in truth, so many people’s dream car! www.lamborghini.com

Mercedes E53 AMG Cabriolet

Engine: AMG - enhanced 3.0L inline-6 turbo Horsepower: 429 hp Transmission: AMG SPEEDSHIFT® TCT 9-speed Acceleration: 4.4 sec Top Speed: 155 mph

The E53 AMG is arguably the most aesthetically beautiful model in the current Mercedes range. It incredibly manages the impossible task of balancing a daily runner with a supercar of genuine street credibility. This beautiful piece of German engineering is relatively new to the Mercedes family. The E-Class cabriolet has only been around since 2017 and is one of the first hybrid AMG’s. Don’t let the word ‘hybrid’ confuse you about the car’s performance. It perfectly encapsulates the essence of Mercedes motto “The best or nothing”. This car offers you a unique luxury open air driving experience. The engine roars with a raw, mechanical passion yet it is fully electrified thanks to Mercedes making ground-breaking advances in motoring technology. The engine even can recapture energy during deceleration adding more efficiency with the raw power that every motorist looks for. As you’d expect of a Mercedes, aside from performance and reliability, luxury is paramount. They say real beauty is on the inside and here the Benz triumphs. A full dual iPad-like dashboard shows the car’s performance and controls. Other features include a brand specific AIRSCARF neck-level heating system and heated front armrests and steering wheel. The list of customisation to create a bespoke car is endless and has options such as the steering wheel with hand-sewn, embossed Nappa leather side grips that are accented with polished black piano lacquer and massaging front seats. Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Bluetooth Connectivity are all available to stream whatever your heart desires to hear over a superb and class-leading Burmester Surround Sound system. This beautiful cabriolet offers a unique open-air driving experience that is truly the only way to travel – especially in the glorious Californian sun. www.mercedes-benz.co.uk

Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T

Engine: 3.9-liter V8 - 90° turbo Horsepower: 602 hp Transmission: 7-Speed Dual Clutch Acceleration: 3.5 seconds to 100 kph Top Speed: 199 mph

There are two very specific places where one has to drive the most iconic car brand in the world. The coastline of Monaco for the thrill of driving and the view has to be one – and obviously – for the bling factor, the other has to be Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. I was fortunate enough to be loaned a beautiful 2018 Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T, in silver with a rosso interior, on a recent trip to the City of Angels. Even here, where supercars are as commonplace as waitresses waiting to be discovered as the next Sophia Loren, this car turns heads and draws admiring nods of approval and sometimes those of envy. Ferrari’s, for those that have not had the honour of driving one, are not what you imagine. They are indeed amongst the most desired and most powerful cars ever made but they drive like your everyday car. Of course the technology and raw power is all there under the hood but this car is as able on a shopping trip down Rodeo Drive to Gucci as it would be on the vast open freeways of California. The cars are so well built nowadays that they come with a four year unlimited mileage warranty. Not like the cars of old that you would only drive on sunny days and as a special treat. The GT4C Lusso T, which is the replacement/facelifted version of the older FF model, has the engine in the front allowing for four adults to sit in comfort. But don’t let the practicality fool you about the car’s performance. The V8 engine roars from standstill to 100kph in around 3.5 seconds. Fuel efficiency has also increased 30% from the previous model. This car has so much class-leading technology that I’d need pages to detail and review it all. All you really need to know is that this is Ferrari’s most versatile and practical car. It is utterly joyous to drive and even in Hollywood, this car is the real star! www.ferrari.com

Aston Martin DB11

Engine: V8 - V12 Horsepower: 503bhp and 600 bhp respectively Transmission: Eight-speed automatic 0-62 mph: 4 seconds - 3.9 seconds Top Speed: 187mph - 200mph

I was in Angeles, Los Angeles! If you do happen to be in the City of Angels and wish to maintain your anonymity – then perhaps 007’s preferred car shouldn’t be your stealthy option. This four-seater hard top with a soft cover option is truly a work of art whose clean lines and sculpted body is another masterpiece from the brand synonymous with effortless style and is a real headturner that draws so many admiring glances and attention. The new DB model is the most fuel efficient Aston Martin has ever built. Underpinned by a new bonded aluminium body structure that combines lightness and strength, the Aston sets the benchmark in class for sporting Grand Tourers and helps the legendary DB line to pinnacles not seen before. The trademark design is ever-present yet has been evolved to be yet more sleek and contemporary. Familiar elements such as the iconic radiator grille have been reinterpreted, its lines and features amplified and celebrated. All-new LED head and taillights create expressive visual signatures and enhance the cars signature silhouette. For those that prefer the open-road feel, a modernday interpretation of the coveted DB Volante is added to the DB11 line-up. DB11 exploits its inner strength and immense performance with completely re-worked chassis, suspension, steering and electronics. Revised suspension with adaptive damping and multiple driver-selectable dynamics enrich DB11’s adaptability. A genuine supercar that is as comfortable and fun as your daily drive in town or out on the open road stretching its very ample legs! www.astonmartin.com

I

G E N E R A T I O N WHY?

n talking to my youngest daughter, I became aware that the way she and her generation see the world is not entirely different to the way that I did at that age. That in itself is not that strange, my youthful exploration for personal identity and meaning led me to experiment with different groups. The hippy movement particularly attracted me; ‘free love’ being a draw. Hippies were going to change the world; I wanted in. Hippies wanted a world based on peace, love, and happiness, so did I. They revolted against society, and abandoned traditional customs and lifestyles to form their own. Hippies were counterculture revolutionaries who stood for peace, love and changing the world for the better. Radical for the time. Seems we are still having the same conversations five decades later. Hippies felt alienated from middle-class society, which they saw as dominated by materialism and repression, and they developed their own distinctive lifestyle. Many lived together in communes, where they worked together and shared possessions. Sexual relations between members of these groups flowed freely, whenever there was a mutual attraction. They believed they should ‘go with the flow’ rather than be uptight about sexual hang-ups like previous generations were. They strongly opposed the American involvement in the Vietnam War and wanted there to be peace. Because of this, hippies also became known as flower children because they would often hand out flowers to promote ideas of peace and love. New generations make up stories and tales of a new world, a new way of life, to give some objective meaning to the purpose of their generation, their identity. As hippies, we were going to change the world through Peace, Love and Flowers. Today our human rights, our democratic world and the ideals of the young are actually not that far away from my beliefs and hopes at that age. The gender fluid, free flowing youth of today instantly communicate with one another, no matter where they are, they create virtual worlds and groups and have hundreds of friends. It seems their commune is larger and possibly virtual, but given today’s technology, my daughter’s generation now has the power to reach masses and it is the consensus and desire of large numbers of people that topple governments, define new ways of living, and change the world. The power of technology today partnered with the power of imagination in a world where Google, Apple and Facebook are more powerful than governments, can be viewed as frightening or liberating. It will be the attitudes to generations Y, Z, iGen or Centennials which will determine if past generations have empathy with them and accept their new world or fail to learn and alienate them by risking not acknowledging the opportunities they present.

All Hallow’s Eve ‘Unleash The Beast’ We invited you to step into your dark side and find your inner beast as we went back to nature to celebrate ritual magic and all things wild, weird and wonderful amongst our coven of witches as we ventured further into the dense woods and countryside of England of old, to face our darkest fears and dance with the devil.

The year ended on a high as we explored the world of colour and light. It was a magical roundabout of a party bursting with illumination, awe inspiring spectacles and mesmerising entertainment. We welcomed in 2019 with glistening shades from the ever-changing kaleidoscope and staged London’s most colourfully reflecting New Year’s Eve party.

EYES WIDE SHUT

Party

We were transported back to the Roaring Twenties, a time of decadence, idealism, resistance to change and excess in its droves. The evening was full of glitter, glamour and mysterious surprises as well as the Charleston on the dancefloor and impressive Burlesque.

Muertos

This colourful commemoration of honoured spirits, aka the Day of the Dead, is a whimsical celebration for the new life of the dead. We joined the fiesta celebrating the night amid cheery skeletons, flower laden hair garlands and special guests Los Pacaminos, featuring one of the UK’s best loved vocalists Paul Young.

Our Legal Eagle A professional opinion from Helen Crossland at Seddons

Helen Crossland

Q: What is the next big employment issue facing your clients? A:

Helen Crossland is a partner and head of our employment team. She advises start-ups, SMEs, international businesses and executives on the full range of employment law. Her work includes Employment Tribunal and High Court claims, advice on employee recruitment and departures, and on post-termination and confidentiality restrictions and enforcement. Helen also works in-house with corporate clients and advises boards on workforce planning and risk.

Since qualifying in 2004, I have seen seismic changes in the employment law landscape. For the most part, this has been driven by politics and technology. In the last five years alone, we have witnessed the introduction and demise of Employment Tribunal fees, and major case law around the right to monitor employees and the use of data and technology in the workplace. Social media related misdemeanours and dismissals are also a novel and regular feature of my work nowadays. We have further seen the wholesale expansion of the right to apply to work flexibly; for years the reserve of parents of young children. It is this, and the concept of agile working that I see as the next big thing. Flexible and remote working will likely become ‘the new normal,’ and transcend businesses and individuals of any employment status. A recent local survey showed that while a fifth of employees in the West End currently work remotely, half of their employers expect that figure to rise in the next five years. It cannot just be attributed to the millennials. Most businesses understand the impact that reducing office costs can have to their bottom line, and are aware of the advantages that agile working can bring to their organisation. These include employee retention, recruitment, PR, and business development opportunities, as well as the obvious cost savings to be had. Businesses simply risk being left behind if they resist modernisation while those around them invest in technology and smarter, leaner working methods. The benefits of having systems in place that work, and which enable employees to perform their duties from home, a hot desk or co-working space, are undisputable. However, my experience is that many employers are grappling with the concept of agile working, with trust and cultural issues being the main barriers. Some organisations, because of what they do, cannot be as versatile as others. For those who are amenable to flexible working practices, planning for the practicalities and ensuring buy-in at all levels is crucial. Employers must place trust in employees to do what is required of them, even when ‘out of sight’, and deal with those who take advantage of such trust. Agile working does, nevertheless, raise natural challenges and to work properly, must involve agreed parameters and equal flexibility on the part of the individual. It is, however, what most organisations are gearing up for, if they are not already, and employees as a matter of course, are now expecting flexibility in their work arrangements. helen.crossland@seddons.co.uk Tel: 020 7725 8034
