WELCOME TO STOKE PARK 4
STOKE PARK
Welcome to Stoke Park 2018 is a special year, as we celebrate our 110th anniversary since Stoke Park was founded, as Britain’s first country club. I’m sure you will agree that the founder, Nick ‘Pa’ Lane Jackson, would be very proud of what Stoke Park has become, and how much it is enjoyed by our members and guests. The full bunker refurbishment of our magnificent golf course has now been completed, and has been widely praised by members and the press and I would like to congratulate the Golf and Estate teams on delivering this for us to enjoy. I am also delighted that Stoke Park has become the European HQ of the world renowned David Leadbetter Academy. This year we have continued to receive wonderful awards and accolades, and were delighted to be recently named the No.1 Golf Resort in England by Golf World and to win the Best Meetings, Conference and Event Venue of the Year at the Bucks Business Awards 2018. You will notice we have gone with a very classic front cover for this anniversary issue; Sean Connery was photographed on our 17th tee during the filming of the 1964 James Bond classic Goldfinger. I hope you enjoy the magazine and I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

From
Kings & Queens to
Movie Royalty... As Stoke Park celebrates its 110th Anniversary of becoming the UK’s first Country Club, we wanted to take a look back at the Club’s history and give you an insight into the illustrious past of Stoke Park…
S
toke Park has over 1,000 years of history and is named in the Domesday Book. The original Manor House faces Stoke Park's Palladian Mansion. The Manor House once belonged to Queen Elizabeth I (1581 – 1603) and then by Sir Edward Coke (1603 – 1644). It is said that the Queen visited The Manor House and Sir Edward bestowed jewels to the value of twelve hundred pounds upon her. Sir Edward Coke was the first Lord Chief Justice of England and famous lawyer who prosecuted Sir Walter Raleigh, proving that he had an ‘English face but a Spanish heart.’

STOKE PARK
Under King James I, Sir Edward prosecuted Guy Fawkes and the Gun Powder plotters and coined the phrase, ‘an Englishman’s home is his castle.’ The estate then passed to Sir John Villiers (1644 - 1656) and it was at The Manor House, where King Charles I was imprisoned on his way to his trial in London. In fact it is said that The Manor House has welcomed a Queen, imprisoned a King, and refused entry to King William III – the owner at the time, Sir Robert Gayer (1656 - 1724) was a staunch Jacobite and didn’t accept William of Orange as King!

Stoke Park was a family home until 1908 when it was bought by Nick ‘Pa’ Lane Jackson when he created the UK's first Country Club!

In 1724 the estate was bought by Edmund Halsey and Lady Temple. Then in 1750 under the ownership of Lady Cobham, the famous Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was commissioned to design the landscapes. Much of Brown’s vision is still seen today and it was Brown who installed the beautiful lakes we have on the estate today. It was at this time as well that the poet Thomas Gray wrote his famous ‘Elegy in a Country Churchyard’ here at Stoke Park. He was buried in St Giles Church opposite us. In 1760 the Penn family purchased the estate. The Penn family were the founding fathers of Pennsylvania in the US and Thomas Penn lived in the Manor House until his death in 1775. His son John Penn inherits the estate in 1775 however he does not return to Stoke Park until 1789. During the American War of Independence, the newly-formed American government bought the Penn land which they proceeded to name after the family: Pennsylvania. When John Penn returned to Stoke Park in 1789, two thirds of the Manor House were dilapidated, so he knocked down two thirds and the remaining third still stands proudly today. With the money from the sale of lands in the US, Penn hired James Wyatt, a well-known Georgian architect to design The Mansion. John Penn erected monuments, in particular one of them to the poet Thomas Gray, and also a column commemorating Sir Edward Coke, which stands proudly in front of The Mansion. Humphry Repton was commissioned to update the landscapes including positioning the beautiful bridge over the lakes, and creating stunning vistas from the new house. 2018 sees the bicentenary of Repton’s death and his work is being widely celebrated across the UK.

The Mansion was built with beautiful views all around, and looked over one of England's oldest deer parks. It is said that Sir Edwin Landseer, who visited Stoke Park many times when it was owned by Lord Taunton (1848 – 1863) set up a studio here, where he painted many deer paintings. Sir Edwin painted the famous Monarch of the Glen. When the US government was designing The White House, the architect requested the drawings of James Wyatt with particular interest in what is now known as The Wyatt room, which is in The Mansion. The Wyatt room is said to have been the inspiration for the Oval Office. Stoke Park was a family home until 1908 when it was bought by Nick ‘Pa’ Lane Jackson (founder of the Corinthian Club) when he created the UK's first Country Club! Harry Colt was commissioned to design Stoke Park’s 27-hole Championship Golf Course. Colt was an eminent golf architect. The 7th tee at Stoke Park was the inspiration for the 16th at the US Masters in Augusta (it is a mirror image) and the course hosted the first PGA match play in 1910, as well as being the setting for the most famous golf battle in cinematic history: James Bond VS Auric Goldfinger! Stoke Park has a wonderful movie history. As mentioned before it was Harry Colt the setting for the famous golf battle in Goldfinger (also where Oddjob throws his bowler hat and chops the head off a stone statue) to scenes in Tomorrow Never Dies, to a starring role in Daniel Craig's Layer Cake and the setting of the infamous mini break in Bridget Jones's Diary! Plus many other films! Pinewood Studios is only five miles from Stoke Park. In 1988 the King family bought the estate and have lovingly restored the Mansion and the estate to what we see today. The Spa was built in 2002 and the additional rooms added in 2008, so we have 49 bedrooms. We are a 5 AA Red Star hotel (one of only 50 in the UK and Ireland) and Humphry's (our fine dining restaurant) holds 3 AA Rosettes.

David currently coaches at the Leadbetter Golf Academy World Headquarters in ChampionsGate, Orlando but will be a regular visitor to Stoke Park through the summer months when he will be providing members and client clinics and supporting the existing Golf Academy Coaching Team. In anticipation of the launch of the Golf Academy, the Stoke Park coaches have been undergoing the Leadbetter Certification Programme since February. The Certification Programme encompasses 12 levels from studying David’s theories through to mental and physical fitness for Golf. It will be sure to enhance the level of coaching delivered at Stoke Park and ensure that students experience long term benefits to their game. Upon completion of the Certification Programme, Stoke Park will boast the highest concentration of Leadbetter Certified Instructors outside of Orlando. There are also plans in place for continual learning that will ensure the level of instruction delivered remains at the leading edge of golf coaching. Sussex-born Leadbetter will be at Stoke Park in July to officially launch the academy

that will bear his name, and our director of golf, Stuart Collier, believes Stoke Park has pulled off a coup in partnering with a man for whom the often-overused sobriquet ‘legend’ is surely deserved. Collier said: “Few people in the world can match David Leadbetter’s track record in golf coaching – or the success his students have achieved. His name has become a byword for the very highest level of coaching and tuition. We have enjoyed unprecedented success in our academy over the past few years – not just in competition wins but in the overall improvements shown by the students – and having the European Headquarters of The Leadbetter Golf Academy here is testament to the effort put in by everybody concerned. It will prove of immense benefit to members of all ages.”
Leadbetter added: “I am looking forward to spending time at The Leadbetter Golf Academy at Stoke Park when it officially opens to the public. The Academy is located at a fabulous resort that I am very familiar with. Among other things, I am delighted to support the education of coaches at our new LGA Headquarters at Stoke Park. A lot of time and money has been invested in the golf courses at Stoke Park in recent years and the team there has put their energy into elevating their Academy to new heights. I am delighted to be able to recognise their efforts by partnering with the team at Stoke Park – one of just three in the UK.” The most recent addition to the Academy facilities includes a brand-new tour spec short game area which will provide the Golf Academy Coaches the opportunity to deliver first class short game instruction.

James Jewell, who looks after our Golf Membership caught up with two members a year on from joining to get their thoughts on the Club…
Colin Miles (r) receiving an award from 2018 Men’s Captain Derek Ball
COLIN MILES Colin is a retired Director who moved back from Hong Kong 4 years ago. After initially joining Sandy Lodge he decided to come over to Stoke Park in April last year.
So Colin, what’s your back story to coming over to Stoke Park? I have had a long association with Stoke Park which goes back to the 1980's. I was a Director at Ladbrokes and as a colleague of mine was a member, we regularly held our annual golf days here so I was fully aware that Stoke Park was a top quality golf course. Since then, I lived in Hong Kong for 9 years between 2004-2013, and on my return joined Sandy Lodge on the recommendation of my brother in law. I enjoyed my time there but found the rush-hour travelling from Gerrards Cross very time consuming. My next door neighbour is a tennis member and he and his wife had invited us on occasion to Stoke Park for Sunday lunch and afternoon tea so it was a no brainer for me to re-ignite my interest by joining as a golf member. How have you found it since you’ve joined? It has been a fantastic year for me and from the outset I felt a sense of belonging as everyone I have had the pleasure to meet has made me feel so welcome. Just being part of such an amazing set-up has enabled me to settle in very quickly and I have really enjoyed playing golf on all three courses. What has helped you to integrate? I was really impressed with the mentoring system at Stoke Park and both you and Stuart Collier (Director of Golf) have been instrumental in giving me the best possible advice on how I could best integrate into the Club. Not long after I joined as coincidence would have it the Seniors Team had a home match scheduled against my old club so I took the opportunity to introduce myself on the morning of the match
18 STOKE PARK
to Brian Briggs the Seniors Captain at the time to give him the benefit of my knowledge on the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition and he was kind enough to brief me on how I could get the best out of my membership and quite frankly I have not looked back since. What do you value about Stoke Park the most? I believe that the members are really valued here and feel as though I have been upgraded from Business to First Class joining as a golf member. The quality of the facilities, golf course, clubhouse and service are far superior to anywhere else I have played. Stopping off at the bag drop and regularly eating in private rooms is a new experience for me and what other golf Clubs have such prestigious surroundings to take in lunch or dinner after playing in Club matches and competitions. My wife doesn't play golf but is a social member enjoying coffee mornings with her friends and on occasion we walk around the gardens to relax and enjoy the scenery and recently after a stroll around the spectacular gardens we found ourselves relaxing in the sunshine laying on sun loungers admiring the rhododendrons while drinking Pimms. I can't ever remember doing that at a golf club before. My brother-in-law always looks forward to a game at Stoke Park and calls it the place with the 'wow' factor and I am sure he is right. What would you change if you had the chance? I wouldn't change a thing. There have been a few grumbles about the severity of the new fairway bunkers but overall I think that the bunkers are fair and the Club has done a very good job with them. Every time I tee off I have no plans to go in them anyway. It is only when I play the occasional twilight friendly do I get the opportunity to see how picturesque the course is and admire the effort that goes into maintaining the standards and beauty of our surroundings. The course is fantastic, the clubhouse breath-taking and all the service elements I have mentioned makes Stoke Park a really special place to play golf.
NESCHE YAZGAN Nesche works in the city as a Senior Analyst in an Asset Manager firm and picked up golf a couple of years ago.
Nesche Yazgan
Why Golf? I actually started golf to improve my tennis. I had got to a point in my tennis playing whereby I kept making the same mistakes over and over again. My theory with golf was to take up a sport that was much more difficult – smaller ball and smaller club head, and hopefully that would help my ability on the tennis court. So how did you start? Well I’m very busy through the week, and working in London, there’s not much access to a golf course. But someone had mentioned the Knightsbridge Golf School to me, and it really fitted my schedule. I could get there in the evening and have some golf lessons in a nicely controlled environment. And what about your involvement with Stoke Park? Well it became clear that if I wanted to continue to develop I had to start playing outside more often. The indoor facility at Knightsbridge was great for the initial learning, but I had to get out more if I wanted to develop my skills further. So I was encouraged to come out to Stoke Park and I joined as an Academy Member. What happened next? I was blown away by Stoke Park. First of all, access to Lane Jackson (holes 19-27) was fantastic. I could challenge myself and get some good exercise at the same time. Secondly, the staff were so nice and gracious. I never felt worried about being a beginner on the golf course and was always given plenty of encouragement. And thirdly, I didn’t even know there were coaching sessions available to beginners when I came here (to Stoke Park) and getting involved with them was a fantastic learning curve.
Tell me more about the coaching sessions? Tom Habgood runs the Adult Group Programme which is purely designed for beginners to develop their skills. For the first time I could have lessons outside which broadened the scope for what was possible. The classes were exceptional. They were so diverse and each week focussed on something different. For the first time when I was playing on the course I was actually looking forward to getting into some funky different positions to see if what I had learnt would pay off. And then you upgraded to become a full member. Why did you do that? The Academy membership gave me a rich experience of playing golf over holes 19-27, but after a while I wanted to play more than 9 holes at a time and challenge myself on some other holes. Tom had encouraged me to play more golf and arranged a few games for me with other members. I played in a mixed competition and a few ladies events and everyone was so welcoming. Tell me more about the Ladies Competitions? Honestly I can say that there has been so much to get involved in. I met the Lady Captain, Jean Taylor, really early on amongst a number of other members, and I haven’t stopped being invited to events. It’s fantastic! My most memorable was when we all dressed up for the Turkey Trot – a competition in December before Christmas. Everyone put in so much effort and looked brilliant – it was so much fun. How did you foresee Stoke Park before you joined and has it lived up to your expectations? Before I joined my biggest fear was the intimidation of other people watching me, but I have to say that at Stoke Park there has been none of that. As I said before, the staff were so friendly and encouraging, the ladies section were really welcoming and Tom has done a great job in introducing me to the Club. If you could improve one thing about the Club what would it be? In terms of the facilities and the structures in place I would not change a thing – it is perfect for me. I would like more choice and organic options available in the restaurants and halfway house especially. So all-in-all, has golf improved your tennis? Ha! Well I started golf two years ago and I haven’t picked up the tennis racket for the past 18 months… golf has been so addictive. It is an absolute rollercoaster from ability to non-ability even from shot to shot. I wouldn’t change a thing about my first year, and Stoke Park has been a huge factor in that.

5 minutes with… Chef! Nick Downie catches 5 minutes with Stoke Park’s celebrated Executive Chef, Chris Wheeler and finds out some very exciting news regarding his debut cookbook!
Chris, I know that you are one of the busiest people at Stoke Park. How has the year been so far?
It has been great! We launched a brand new menu in Humphry’s which has gone down very well, and we are constantly developing this and creating new menus seasonally. I’m always looking to use local produce and we are making sure these are all included on the menu. Afternoon Teas have been a great success too and we’ve just created a new tennis themed one for the Summer season and then also a Christmas one. We’ve had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for special occasions such as the Royal Wedding and, of course, The Boodles. Last year you came up with an incredible tennis ball dessert, which when broken, it had a tennis court inside! Are there any surprises like this for this year’s The Boodles?
Ha! You will have to wait and see! In 2017 you were appointed the UK’s Ambassador for Quality Standard Mark Beef and Lamb and appeared at many food festivals – are you continuing this in 2018?
Absolutely, I was invited to continue as the ambassador which I am really delighted to do and I will be appearing and doing demos at lots of food festivals this year including the Taste of London (Saturday 16th June), The Pommery Seafood Festival (Saturday 14th July), Taste of the South (Saturday 21st July), Windsor Food Festival (25th-26th August), and then the Thame Food Festival (29th-30th September). Amazing, sounds very busy! And I understand you have some exciting news regarding your debut cookbook?
Yes, I am thrilled that my first cookbook has been published. It features over 65 of my recipes, from starters, fish, mains, desserts and also will include dishes created for vegetarians and vegans, including gluten-free options as well. I wanted to create a book of dishes which anyone can create at home, but I’ve also included a fine dining dish for each course as a bit of a challenge so you can really impress your family and friends at home! Sounds fantastic and I really look forward to testing my culinary skills! When is the book out?
It is out now and available to buy at Stoke Park.

ROAST SEA BREAM
WITH MEDITERRANEAN VEGETABLES, CRUSHED NEW POTATOES AND TOMATO PROVENÇALE SAUCE
Ingredients
4 sea bream fillets For the vegetables
2 red peppers 4 baby aubergines 8 baby courgettes 800g new potatoes (peeled and cooked) For the sauce
500g plum tomatoes (finely chopped) 1 red onion (finely sliced) 2 garlic cloves (finely sliced) 2 thyme & rosemary sprigs 200ml tomato juice 2 basil sprigs (chopped)
Method Cut the peppers in half lengthways, leaving the stalk on and remove the seeds. Cut the baby aubergines and courgettes in half lengthways. Divide the aubergines and courgettes into 4 and place inside each red pepper half. Place on a baking tray, season and add a drizzle of olive oil, 1 sprig of thyme and rosemary and cook for 10 minutes (until all the vegetables are soft). Crush the new potatoes, season and place into the oven for 8 minutes until they start to brown. Sweat the finely diced onion and garlic in a pan, chop the remaining rosemary and thyme and add to the pan, mix well. Add the tomato, season and sweat for a couple of minutes, add the tomato juice and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the basil just before serving. Score the skin side of each sea bream, pan-fry in some olive oil skin side down for 3 minutes before turning for a further 3 minutes.
To Serve Place a ¼ of the crushed potatoes in the middle of each plate, topping with a stuffed pepper half. Place the fillet of sea bream on top and pour the tomato provençale sauce around.

Prenuptial agreements are couples setting their relationships up for failure? Fran Hipperson from B P Collins believes not at all. While couples can be completely and utterly in love, there’s still room for pragmatism.
P
lanning your wedding is a time of great excitement. There is so much to think about – the venue, the ceremony, the dress and the honeymoon. But how many couples think about the prenuptial agreement? Understandably those two words could stop many a happy couple in their tracks before they get anywhere close to exchanging rings. Yet the reality is that more couples are considering them as a wise precaution. A prenuptial agreement should be an agreement between future spouses or civil partners, and not one person imposing what they want on the other. It can help to reduce or prevent expensive court proceedings if the relationship comes to an end. Typically, couples may decide on a prenuptial agreement where one brings more wealth into a marriage and wants to protect it in the event of divorce. Or it may be that one party already has children and wants to preserve property or monies for them. Having a prenuptial agreement won’t give you a cast iron guarantee on the outcome, but it can certainly affect the way the Judge applies his or her discretion when making the final award and that has to be worthwhile. More importantly prenups are more likely to help couples resolve matters amicably because they have already addressed matters before they got married. Both parties should take separate, independent legal advice to ensure fairness and that there is no duress or chance of misrepresentation. Each side must be open and honest with the other, so that if one party is giving up future rights or entitlements, they make an informed decision with all relevant information. If you decide a prenuptial agreement is for you then the time to start planning this is as soon as you decide to get married. If you wait until a couple of months before the big day, the emotion and the stress can put you both under huge pressure. And then, once it’s done, you can get back to planning for one of the biggest days of your life. bpcollins.co.uk | 01753 889995 | enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk

Sarah & Adam Where do we start... WHAT A DAY last Saturday was. And the whole weekend was incredible. From my parents, Adam and I we wanted to say a massive thank you for all your organisation, and for those incredibly detailed function sheets that took down every little thing we ever mentioned, it made the weekend and especially last Saturday everything we had hoped for and more. Chris and his team were amazing on the day, they listened to me and worked well with Roy and were just great. Especially when the sun suddenly came out for good after the ceremony and we started with drinks inside and then I was so desperate to get everyone moved out as quick as possible to enjoy the weather, it worked so perfectly and the efficiency was second-to-none. Roy was so great with keeping timings; everything went so smoothly with him there as well as Chris and Gabrielle handling everything both day and night. Our hats go off to Chris Wheeler and his team for the amazing food, so many people had commented it was the best wedding food they had ever had, especially with the personalised menus and the fact they had chosen what they were eating. The courses were just as delicious as they were when we had first sampled them back in November, and Adam and I managed to eat everything which surprised us both with our nerves! The 007 desserts were so well received, and I think about 100 of the 800 photos of the wedding we have seen so far on social media are of their different bond-named desserts. Our only regret was not getting to see Roy announce them in his white tuxedo! We danced literally till the very end, the band were amazing and the stage was perfect, we are so glad we chose to have one. The bouquet toss you would have loved as surprisingly a man caught it (the pianist Ollie!) so no pressure on him. After, all the single ladies went running for it, it was priceless viewing! The whole day was so amazing and better than we could have dreamed of. Despite the weather causing the ceremony to be indoors people have still commented that it was the best civil ceremony they had ever attended and it was just perfect. I know I use that adjective a lot! I think our only regret was not having you there! Michele you were sincerely missed by all of us! Seeing as you couldn't see your work being appreciated, and so many have said it was the best wedding they had ever been to, which is a massive compliment given the destinations and volume of weddings our friends have been to over the past few years!

Stoke Park provided us with the perfect venue for our wedding earlier this year. Driving into the estate it becomes instantly clear that this is a special place and fitting for the most important of occasions. The Mansion House is an iconic backdrop and set within the beautiful grounds certainly allows for some fantastic photograph opportunities throughout the day! What doesn't go unnoticed is the professional yet personal service provided from ALL of the staff at Stoke Park. From initial consultations, menu tastings, logistics and planning, right through to the management of the day itself, everything that could be delivered was done so beyond our expectations. We would like to give special recognition to our Wedding Coordinator Michele and her team who dealt with all of our questions and queries and gave expert advice when we needed it most in the months, weeks and days leading up to the big day. With Stoke Park you get the quality of a romantic setting, dining excellence and professionalism you would expect from such a recognised venue with a reassuringly personal touch which is so valuable during the build-up.

We wish to thank the Stoke Park team for everything and it all went smoothly on the day with perfect weather (such a blessing considering it was late October!). The food and drink was good, and all our guests enjoyed the evening entertainment and next day activities. The following day of rest and relaxation was much needed for the both of us and we really got to enjoy the facilities at Stoke Park to unwind. It was very pleasant, just the two of us taking it easy and then David Hasselhoff shows up to have a chat in the spa hot tub! The whole experience was truly memorable.

Despite there being barely two months from the time we chose Stoke Park and the wedding date itself, everything always felt logistically unflustered, options were clearly articulated and sensibly staggered so we never felt like we were drowning beneath a weight of decisions to be made. It was evident we were in very experienced hands and even unexpected changes to plan were easily accommodated. The recommended suppliers were all superb – flowers, photographer, musicians, DJ, cake maker – all delivered to the highest level. The support staff were really professional and only sought any decisions from us if strictly necessary – we really were left to enjoy everything. The food was fantastic – there were many comments to the effect that to create at that level of quality for one guest is impressive, but to do it for nearly 100 people was remarkable. The venue is stunning – for any major event and also as a hotel. We had an amazing day which we will never forget. The amount of feedback we received from our guests (many international – and what an advert for the UK it was!) evidently confirmed they did too.

The New Boodles Collection
F
resh and sweet, Boodles new ‘Orchard’ collection features the familiar and playful symbol of a pear. Delicate drop earrings, pendants, rings and bracelets feature pear-shaped charms, lightly dusted with diamonds, which appear ready to be plucked straight from the tree. Smooth and elegant curving lines form the rich, plump shape of a distinctive fruit motif. Pears are scattered throughout British history, culture and country landscapes: dominant within royal orchards from as early as 1207, featuring in poetry and nursery rhymes throughout centuries, and still baked within puddings and cultivated within gardens today. The pear is the perfect symbol of Britishness and translates beautifully into Boodles fine jewellery designs. ‘Orchard’ is a feminine and elegant collection with a unique symbolism.

BOODLES Best of British Christina Raptis sits down with Boodles jewellery Chairman Nicholas Wainwright in their opulent Bond Street showroom…
C
ombining the best of British tradition with a contemporary and modern approach, Boodles has been designing and selling fine jewellery for well over two centuries. Nicholas Wainwright has been working at Boodles for nearly 50 years and remains 100% active and involved and his role is as diverse as ever, as he takes an interest in every aspect of the business, from mentoring staff to hosting events, meeting customers and visiting the Boodles shops and overseeing the design team. Hi Nicholas, thank you for taking the time to speak with me. Could you please tell me about your relationship with Stoke Park and your involvement with The Boodles tennis event? “The glorious parklands of Stoke Park make it the most beautiful setting and a perfect partner with whom to host our annual tennis event. This thought occurs to me each year as I drive down the long approach to the Mansion House – I’m sure it occurs to all our guests too. The feeling of ‘Yes, we’ve arrived!’, the aura is so special it’s like no other venue in England and you know you’re in for something special. We stay for four to five days each year during The Boodles Tennis event and just love the whole ambience of the setting. Stoke Park is a very British institution, and I think the finest country club in England. At Boodles, we feel there is so much synergy between the brands and that the relationship works for both parties. Both are very British, both are family-run and have the highest of standards – clients and guests expect and demand the best. The King family have maintained high standards at Stoke Park and our relationship goes back decades. Boodles has been the headline sponsor of the event for 15 years. That’s some commitment and it’s because the event is perfectly suited to our brand ethos. My brother Michael manages the relationship with Patricio Apey, Founder and CEO of ACE Group International – who has been fabulous to work with over the years. His passion and dedication has resulted in the event going from strength to strength each year. We always attract the biggest names in tennis and our guests love the fact that they can get so close to these global superstars in such an intimate atmosphere. Of course, added to that is The Boodles Gallery where clients can see our fabulous jewellery and meet our team, enjoy a delicious lunch and afternoon tea and sip champagne. It is an event that couples can enjoy together, unlike many other sporting events. Our involvement with Stoke Park goes beyond just sponsoring The Boodles each year. Most years we have our company’s annual Directors meeting here, and in 2018 we are also hosting and sponsoring a big golf day and a special ladies lunch. The Boodles has always been our favourite event; one of my special
Nicholas Wainwright with Boodles Head of Design Rebecca Hawkins
memories was teaching tennis legend Gabriela Sabatini to play golf. She was the Ambassador in our first year and at dinner one night she mentioned she’d never played golf, and as I play golf I asked ‘would you like me to teach you?’. She was absolutely brilliant. I hope you enjoy The Boodles as much as we do in glorious sunshine, English garden, perfect lunch, tea and setting…”

MAGNIFICENT MÁLAGA Christina Raptis celebrates the grand opening of the Gran Hotel Miramar and explores the ancient city of Málaga

hether it is the sunshine, cuisine, or the friendly Spaniards that draw you here, Spain is full of life and rich in culture. Having travelled throughout Spain over many years, exploring old fortresses, variations on traditional cuisines, or being awed at the collections in some of the world’s finest museums, I have always had a special place in my heart for the ancient Andalucian city of Málaga. The magnificent Moorish fortress walls and Roman theatre have long been symbols of the city’s place in cultural history, juxtaposed with the modern shopping district, and local hotspots – all located minutes away for the glistening blue sea. The city that gave birth to Pablo Picasso is often overlooked as tourists flock to the Costa del Sol but Málaga is transforming itself into a flourishing cultural hub and making itself a destination for those seeking the best Spain has to offer. To help manage this demand – the newest edition to the flourishing city is the recently opened Gran Hotel Miramar. Backing onto the beach and seaside promenade in the smart Caleta area of Málaga, the hotel is opulent, grand and offers a sophisticated elegance that you might not expect from a Spanish hotel away from the capital. From the majestic entrance to the white marble splashed throughout – this hotel is nothing less than uber-luxurious. Upon entering, the grand lobby is adorned with original frescos, whilst the glistening marble floors and crystal chandeliers hanging from high glass ceilings give it a palatial feel. The staff are attentively waiting to greet us and help with bags at check-in. The hotel has a rich history dating back to 1926 when King Alfonso XIII first opened the hotel as ‘Hotel Principe de Asturias’. Since then, it has undergone several incarnations, in 1936 the hotel was used as a field hospital during the Spanish Civil War. In 1987 it was fully transformed into Málaga’s Palace of Justice until 2007, and finally, in 2016 the renovations started to fully restore it to its previous historical splendour as a hotel. Featuring 200 rooms in three different styles: Classic, Mediterranean and Neo-Arabic, every room has its own touch and attention to detail is clearly displayed throughout. Whether it be the white marble bathrooms, splashes of colour, or luscious bed linens you will feel as spoilt as the Queen. But if a little more pampering is in order a stop in the hotel’s Botanical Spa by Sisley will cater to your every relaxation need. Try a 50-minute spa treatment or spend some time rejuvenating in the hydrotherapy spa circuit. The hotel offers numerous culinary options. For dinner the Príncipe
de Asturias Restaurant is a more formal option, with sea views and terrace tables. Breakfast is enjoyed at the large indoor and outdoor Mediterráneo restaurant by the pool. The rooftop bar is not to be missed and has spectacular views of the city below and is the perfect setting for a cocktail to start or end your night. We were invited to celebrate the official grand opening of the hotel since the immense renovations. Red carpet at the ready, and gleaming classic cars lined up in front of the hotel entrance were signs the celebrations were about to begin and it felt like we had entered a bygone era of Gatsby’s lavish parties. Thousands of guests including prominent Spanish figures and celebrities mingled throughout the hotel, whilst food stands were scattered around the grounds showcasing Spain’s many culinary specialities, from jamón to gazpacho. The glorious evening was topped off with the outer balconies adorned with opera singers and dancers performing before a magnificent firework display which concluded the celebrations. Whilst in Malaga a short walk to the citycentre will satiate all your cultural cravings. Visit the historic Buenavista Palace which houses the Picasso Museum – a permanent collection showing eight decades of his works, the Málaga Cathedral, and of course, the Alcazaba of Málaga, the medieval palace fortress. Stopping in one of the many bars or restaurants for a bite to eat and soaking up the cultural surroundings is the perfect way to conclude a trip around Málaga’s museums and historical landmarks. After all the sightseeing a visit to the Bodegas El Pimpi for a late lunch to enjoy local food and wine is a must. Opened in 1971, El Pimpi is situated inside an old 18th century Málaga mansion house and is one of the longest-standing bodega bars in Málaga. Its name, curious to most visitors, has two stories or rather versions… which I’ll leave for you to discover when you visit. Málaga is much more than simply a gateway to the Costa del Sol – it is a city with a rich history that offers visitors a glimpse into Spain’s past and cultural heritage. A stay at the Gran Hotel Miramar will enrich your soul and allow you to truly experience the city in both luxury and style. You really do have to experience it to know that everything you imagined is real! Gran Hotel Miramar, Paseo de Reding, 22, 29016, Málaga, Spain www.granhotelmiramarmalaga.com

LIFE’S A BEACH
Azzy Asghar indulges at the Boca Raton Resort and Beach Club in Palm Beach, Florida
W
e were invited to Florida to review the award-winning Boca Raton Resort and Beach Club. Located roughly 50 miles north of Miami, The Palm Beaches are home to the super-wealthy community of Palm Beach and, of course, the ‘Winter White House’ at Mar-a-Lago. Florida’s wealthiest county is also a thriving community of arts, history and so much food. A 2003 survey by Robb Report magazine voted Palm Beach as America’s “Best Place to Live” – a good enough recommendation for us! The Boca Resort, which is a Waldorf-Astoria hotel, is approached via a long driveway leading to the flamingo pink façade – a truly impressive sight. We’re greeted by the friendly staff – as only the Americans can do service – instantly making us feel like VIPs in this gorgeous environment. The busy lobby is pristine in marble and there are beautiful plants everywhere. The Boca Raton Resort is the perfect place to spend a vacation. Even though it covers 365 acres of land, has five different accommodation complexes, and 10+ restaurants, it still doesn’t feel impersonal or anonymous as some large hotels do. We’re escorted to our room which is very spacious and tastefully decorated with soft and neutral colours, a king-sized bed and marble features in the bathrooms and stunning views of the resort. Whether you are a couple seeking a romantic getaway or a family with children

of all ages – The Boca Raton Resort has it all. There are plenty of activities to keep you entertained. For the more active who want to practice their surfing skills, you can take instructor-led surf sessions at the FlowHouse, the resort’s dual-sided wave simulator before hitting the real waves in the sea. The sports enthusiast will not be disappointed with the world-class golf and tennis courts available at the resort. If you prefer to spend your holiday in a horizontal position, the resort has private beach access and a number of pools to choose from. The award-winning Waldorf-Astoria Spa is literally an oasis within the oasis of Boca Raton Resort. They offer a range of varied treatments: shock facials, detoxifying body wraps, hot stone massages and jet lag pedicures just to mention a few. We tried an indulgent full-body massage that remedied all manner of hidden aches and tension. Feeling rejuvenated, it was time to further indulge. The epicurean is offered an amazing selection of dining options at the Boca Raton: Sushi, Classic American burgers and barbecue, fresh sea food, and everything imaginable in between. We opt for Lucca – the resort’s Italian restaurant, which offers a Tuscan-inspired menu – divine! We savour a sumptuous offering of beef carpaccio, lobster scampi linguine, and scallops Lucchese. The service and food are impeccable. Massaged and fed – it was time to explore!
Palm Beach is a fantastic vacation destination as it combines so many of the factors that are prerequisites for a classic ‘holiday’: amazingly sunny and warm all-year-round weather, mile-long stretches of white sandy beaches, theme parks, great restaurants, arts and crafts, museums and, of course, a buzzing nightlife. A short drive from Palm Beach is the city of Delray Beach. We enjoy lunch at City Oyster Delray Beach. A very smart yet casual restaurant that has a growing reputation for amazing food – the service in the USA is a given! We indulge in everything from fresh oysters and clams, oysters Rockerfeller to Cajun fish tacos – each dish is as mouthwatering as the last. Be sure to ask for one of the tables on the terrace to enjoy the sun, people watching, and amazing cocktail creations! As epicureans we only ever think about food. Even at lunch we discuss where to eat dinner! Thus we ventured to Louie Bossi’s eponymous restaurant which is causing a huge stir (pardon the pun!) in South Florida. He has the Miami Sun Sentinel raving, “I am in awe of Louie Bossi, both the chef and the restaurant.” Flavours combine his Italian heritage with his NY upbringing to create dishes that are both authentic and memorable. Meatballs full of herbs and spices adorn pasta, and pizza from the fire-pit covered in perfectly aged-meats and cheeses are devoured to the last crust. After a restful night, we started the next day with a tour of Delray Beach. The unassuming town is full of cultural experiences like the Pineapple Grove Arts District which incorporates galleries as well as public artworks. This is still Florida, however, so if you’re keen to see some of the local wildlife, you can make a stop at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands – it features a raised boardwalk that is ideal for observing all sort of critters, including alligators!
Another fantastic destination is the spectacular mansion of Henry Flagler, now a National Historic Landmark and set up as the Flagler Museum. Visitors can take guided tours of the Gilded Age interiors and expertly manicured grounds. After our tour at the museum, we head to dinner at SeaGrille. Surrounded by a lovely seaside atmosphere, we enjoy a variety of fresh seafood. Each dish is simply prepared with minimal fuss so as to maintain natural flavours. When the time has come to check out, I must admit, I don’t do it voluntarily. My suitcase feels heavier and the sun seems to be shining extra brightly, seemingly mocking me for having to leave and return to grey and cold England. So when the English weather seems too unbearable to stand, I will close my eyes, lean back, and think of those sunny days in Palm Beach.

Back in the U.S.S.R. at Russian Samovar Located in the Theater District, Russian Samovar boasts a 19thcentury feel – a home for many famous Russian poets and writers who keep coming back for the exceptional dining experience. Owned by Roman Kaplan and managed by his daughter Vlada Von Shats and her two sons Michael and Nicholas, the establishment offers some of the finest Russian cuisine in New York. Previously co-owned by ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov and Nobel Prize winner for poetry Joseph Brodsky, this elegant eatery is – aside from its authentic Russian dishes – known for its 26 flavored vodkas prepared in-house. Delectable appetizers include Beluga and Osetra caviar, but it is its signature entrées that have put Russian Samovar on the culinary map.

Azzy Asghar visits NH Collection’s 5-star hotels in Milan and Florence
here’s so much one expects when you’re visiting Italy: great food, rich culture and amazing history. The one thing you definitely don’t expect in March is snow! Yet as we arrived for our stay to review the Milan flagship of the NH Collection the city associated with style was covered lightly in snow – very vogue indeed! Yet, even with a dusting of white powder lining the terracotta roofs and streets the NH Collection President Milan does not disappoint. The locals seemed even more bemused than even we Brits were at this unexpected arrival with tourists flocking to take images of the Milan Cathedral and historic landmarks covered in a light snowy blanket. Entering the lobby was a respite from the outside chill, and the warm, neutral colour palette and contemporary design that balances both elegance and comfort seemed to make it feel more welcoming. Red accents within the furniture and elaborate light fixtures provide a pop of
Milano flair that reminds guests they are still in the design and fashion capital of the world. The rooms are of an equally impeccable design scheme. The soft colour palette is continued in the rooms which are anchored by sleek, modern furnishings and large, upholstered headboards. The design is clean and minimal without feeling sterile; there is a strong sense of modern while still being comfortable enough to unwind with a bath in the freestanding tub and dive into plush beds after a long day. After a night of restful sleep, we woke to an impressive buffet breakfast in the main dining room. From pastries, fresh fruit, cold cuts, yogurt and juices, there is an option for everyone in your party to fuel up for a day out exploring Milan. The hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre and the Milan Cathedral, a stunning display of gothic and neo-gothic architecture that took over six centuries of construction to complete. It is the largest cathedral in Italy and a welcome escape in from the cold while we toured the city. We also took a lovely excursion on an original 1970s tram that serves a full lunch with champagne as you travel around the city and admire the sights on a guided tour. Italy is known for its dining, and the President Milan’s concept dining experience Panhini is no exception. Featuring specially sourced and crafted Italian sandwiches, the NH Hotel Group’s Michelin-starred chefs have each contributed their own take on the classic sandwich to elevate it to another level. The combinations like black focaccia with taleggio cheese and red peppers or pork ribs with mint and coriander are served at the hotel’s chic Bar Le Colonne. After an evening relaxing in the bar with hand-crafted cocktails and delicious bites, we woke the next day to depart to NH Collection’s Florence accommodation, the Firenze Porta Rossa. Nestled down a small cobblestone street the Porta Rossa is thought to be the oldest hotel in all of Italy! It features a gorgeous 13th century tower and beautiful, original 19th century frescoes in many of the rooms that were only recently discovered and artisans were invited to peel back years of paint to show them in all their glory. The lobby echoes the building’s long history and feels distinctly Italian. Marble tiled floors, stone archways and dark wood accents provide a dramatic but cosy atmosphere. The rooms have a simpler aesthetic that is country chic – soft, upholstered furnishings, warm lamplight and more dark wood pieces continue the cosy feel. If you’re lucky, you might even get a glimpse of Brunechelli’s spectacularly designed dome atop the Cattedrale di Santo Maria del Fiore right from your room’s window. A similar breakfast buffet is served at the Porta Rossa before a day out in beautiful Florence. It’s not long before we lunch at L’Osteria de Il Santo Bevitore, a traditional Florentine trattoria that served up a variety of Italian cold cuts, cheese, and of course, wine. Afterwards we took
a fantastic tour, guided by Musement, a new travel agency looking to give visitors the best combination experiences a city has to offer. From the major sites like the Piazza del Duomo, part of the UNESCO world heritage site that covers the centre of Florence, to the charming Ponte Vecchio whose over water shops still excite visitors. Of course no visit to Firenze is complete without paying a visit to the magnificent Galleria dell’Accademia to see the renaissance masterpiece that is Michelangelo’s Statue of David which is so incredibly impressive in person that no photo could ever portray. After returning to the hotel, we were ready to indulge and be spoiled at the Savini Tartufi Truffle Restaurant, a partnership with the Savini Tartufi family who have been harvesting truffles for generations. Every dish at the restaurant is designed to be served with (or without) truffles. We savoured a traditional truffle risotto, a very interesting truffled gin, and even a truffle infused dessert. Each dish was beautifully presented and just had enough truffle so as not to be overpowering and enhance flavours. The NH Collection Milano President and Porta Rossa both offer contemporary, luxurious and still wholly Italian accommodation for whatever occasion might bring you to Milan or Florence. Whether it is winter and fresh snow is aground, or perhaps your visit is in the middle of the summer, these two cities, and the truffles, never cease to amaze.

International Golfing Escapades
One of the many benefits of joining the Club is the wonderful community and social life it brings which includes several overseas trips
organised by the Club for our members. Over the past 12 months our Golf members have travelled the globe, enjoying great competition, world class golf courses and most importantly, a great holiday! Stoke Park’s Director of Golf, Stuart Collier, 2017 Lady Captain Christine Connelly, Mike and Wendy Fretwell and our Head of Instruction, Chris Murtagh look back on some fabulous trips!
Men’s Signature Tour – Scottsdale and Las Vegas
Captains Links Tour – Aberdeen
We kicked off the 2018 season with a fabulous tour to Arizona. 12 members took the long-haul flight to Phoenix and we started the week with a trip to the final days play at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. This was the perfect way to overcome the long flight and watch some of the world’s best golfers compete of the TPC Scottsdale golf course. No trip to the Waste Management would be complete without a visit to the iconic par three 16th hole with over 30,000 spectators viewing this one hole. Following this we enjoyed four rounds in the perfect desert conditions at Troon North, We-Ko-Pa and Greyhawk Golf Club. At the end of the week we took a drive through the desert and into Las Vegas to finish off the tour in style playing at Shadow Creek. The golf course is an oasis in the middle of Las Vegas where all holes are tree lined and the entire golf experience was something to remember.
The ‘Heads of State’ Tour took place at the start of May with 20 golfers heading north and hopeful of some reasonable weather as we took on the Aberdeen coastline and some spectacular golf courses all ranked in the GB & Ireland Top 100. The four round tour kicked off at Royal Aberdeen (ranked 16) in fairly blustery conditions. This classic links course was laid out in 1888 and last hosted the Scottish Open in 2014 where Justin Rose was victorious. We opted to play two rounds at Trump International Golf Links (ranked 32) and this was a very good decision. A very different golf course to the regular traditional links but a wonderful challenge and we were very lucky with the weather on both days missing the rain. The fourth golf course on the trip was Cruden Bay (ranked 76) designed by Tom Morris in 1899 you should certainly put this one on your bucket list and was the favourite amongst the group. The winner of the Captains Links Challenge was Michael Needley who played some superb golf over the four days with Adam Webb finishing in second place. Next stop for the Men’s Tours will be Turin in September for Captains Overseas Challenge where the Captain, Derek Ball will hope to wrestle the trophy back from the Pro’s Team and stop a three year winning streak. We still have a couple of places left in this tour; if you are interested please contact Stuart Collier for further details.

Palma Tour
by Christine Connelly
Thirty five ladies made the trip to Palma on June 4th. We had an amazing five days in the Sheraton Arabella. We played golf at Son Vida, Son Quint and Son Muntaner. On our ‘free’ day some of the ladies played an extra round at Alcanada, some had a guided tour of the city while others simply enjoyed the sun and all the facilities of the resort. As well as the golf we had a great time trying out all of the wonderful tapas that Palma had to offer!
Turnberry Tour
by Christine Connelly
Twenty four ladies made the trip to Turnberry on May 10th. We had an amazing three days in the resort. The sun shone and we didn’t have to open our umbrellas once. The golf courses offered all the challenges expected of a championship links course but everyone had a great time with some fantastic scores recorded. The resort was magnificent and we enjoyed wonderful Scottish hospitality. The only problem was that the pro-shop ran out of stock!

Mixed Trips 2017
by Mike & Wendy Fretwell - Mixed Section Organisers
Coaching Trips 2017 by Chris Murtagh
I’ve done three coaching trips in the last year: March 2017 – Mixed Coaching Trip – Abama, Tenerife
The Mixed Section at Stoke Park is a vibrant and active group of golfers with a wide range of handicaps. The emphasis is on the social side of golf, but always with a competitive edge when there are prizes involved! There are numerous in-house Mixed Events held at Stoke Park where we often play for a trophy. Additionally, we have six Mixed Matches a year against other prestigious Golf Clubs in the area. In the summer, monthly informal evening “Nine & Dines” are organised for the benefit of new and well established golfers alike. Nine & Dine prizes always include wine, so it could be called “Nine & Dine & Wine”! In 2017, we had two Away Golfing Trips:
1. UK Based Trip – 32 Mixed Golfers thoroughly enjoyed a short break away staying at the Bowood Hotel in Wiltshire for one night. We played the two splendid golf courses – Castle Combe and Bowood. 2. A Trip Abroad – seven nights away with five rounds of golf. Last year, 24 enthusiastic golfers went to Belek, Turkey for seven days of glorious weather. We played World Class Golf Courses and stayed in the Luxury Maxx Royal Hotel with great restaurants. Plans for 2018 include a short golf break away at Goodwood, West Sussex in August and a seven day Golfing Trip to the Costa Navarino Resort in Greece late September. The Mixed Section has a great feeling of camaraderie amongst its members. Our Away Golfing Trips cement these close friendships.
80 STOKE PARK
This trip included five nights in the Ritz Carlton Abama (Half Board) and four rounds of golf, mornings consisted of coaching sessions covering all aspects of the game from long game through to putting. These sessions took place on the various practice areas at Abama. The afternoons were spent on the golf course playing a variety of formats from Texas scramble though to foursomes. The course play was designed to showcase the formats that the students will experience at Stoke Park so they could familiarise themselves. July 2017 – Tournament Weekend – Princes/RSG
This trip includes two nights in the lodges at Princes (Half Board) and three rounds (two at Princes and one at RSG). The tournament was played over the three rounds and the format was individual stableford, all scores counted. The purpose of this trip was for golfers to play some competitive golf away from Stoke Park. March 2018 – Mixed Coaching Trip – Salobre, Gran Canaria
This trip included five nights in the Sheraton Salobre (Half Board) and six rounds of golf (four on Old and two on New Course), mornings consisted of coaching sessions covering all aspects of the game from long game through to putting. These sessions took place on the various practice areas at Salobre. The afternoons were spent on the golf course playing individual stableford and team competitions. The aim on the golf course was to improve course management, strategy and course skills on what were very challenging golf courses.

Going with the Flow Breathe in what you need and exhale what you don’t… Shelley Maxwell explains why we should enjoy the benefits of Yoga
W
hen people know I am a yoga instructor as well as Membership Manager at Stoke Park they ask me questions like: “Can I do your class, I’m really inflexible though? “I’ll never be able to do a handstand like her so I can’t go to that class can I?”, “I love cardio too much, isn’t yoga slow and boring?”, “It’s just for women isn’t it?”, “Am I too overweight to do yoga?”
Contrary to popular belief, yoga isn’t about being able to touch your toes or being able to handstand – it isn’t and shouldn’t be about comparing yourself and judging yourself or others. Yoga is for everybody, male and female, for the young, old, the unfit, the athlete, the disabled, the abled, the inflexible, flexible, strong, weak, overweight, pregnant and even injured. Yes yoga can heal, can make you more flexible, stronger, increase cardio fitness, boost your immunity and drop high blood pressure, help with anxiety and decrease depression; it can do everything it says on the tin. Yoga is accessible for everyone and there is a type of yoga for everyone and anyone, it starts with discovering your yoga style and the teachers that you like going to.
My Yoga Style
If you love cardio, you are like me very “Yang”, I like fast paced exercise (like riding my horses), I like to “feel” I have done a workout, I like to sweat, to build strength. I like a challenge. I discovered the yoga style Ashtanga firstly, of course I was drawn to it, it’s the practice that is strictly structured, with a set sequence that builds strength and flexibility and is a full on workout! It has all the ingredients the yang types love, but offers so much more than any high intensity gym workout. What I discovered was, that this dynamic, physically demanding practice that involves synchronising breath with movement was actually meditative (yes I shocked myself, I was meditating without realising) because linking the breath with movement, the Vinyasa Flow that you may know as sun salutations (repetitive linking of particular
86 STOKE PARK
poses that flow into each other) was actually regulating my breath that I held in so much in daily life, calming my mind and instead of worrying about the future or reflecting on the past, like many anxious people like me do, I was in the present moment… I was living in the moment and this was where my healing and love of yoga began. I teach Rocket yoga at Stoke Park which is based on the modified Primary Series from Ashtanga, with an extra sprinkle of rebel inversion for fun. If you are a yang personality you will love it because it will challenge the mind and body whilst increasing muscle tone and flexibility. The Yoga Pose you avoid the most, you need the most
I also discovered that yang needs yin in her life. Yin obviously being the opposite of yang … slowing everything down (something at first that didn’t sound too fun) …Yin is where you hold poses for longer, sometimes with the assist of props like bolsters and bricks, there is a lot of breath work but no cardio, hardly any movement, except adjusting and transitioning from one pose to next. There is approximately 20 poses but only a few in one class, all easily pronounceable and amusing with names like Bananasana and Sleeping Swan, all focusing on the meridians in the body from Chinese medicine. It isn’t a traditional “restorative” yoga; it is actually quite a challenge, mind and body holding a pose for up to 5 minutes. You realise quickly that if you don’t believe in yourself, if you don’t connect to the breath and regulate it, you don’t surrender to the pose and this is where the magic happens, when you let go. We all naturally tend to use our fight or flight instinct in life when things get difficult or challenging (get me out of this pose now!) but as soon as your mind says relax with a long exhale
(connecting to that parasympathetic nervous system), your body says it. I always think of the quote “Remember that your body listens to your thoughts, make them good ones”. The benefits; range of motion in joints, flexibility to name two physical and then the grief, the stress that I didn’t realise I was holding in the body, is released… if you are yang you need yin in your life, we all need balance in life and yoga is all about balance. Think about what your body needs, ask any athlete the importance of rest, it is essential, so your mind and body, muscles, bones, and connective tissues can rebuild. She doesn’t sweat, she perspires
Hot Yoga flow, heated room approximately 40 degrees… cleanses the toxins from the body due to sweating! We flow in my classes, it is not Bikram or hot 60 mins (a static sequence of set poses). I like to get the heart rate up a little with movement and also hold poses yin style, you may find your flexibility is increased and you sleep better at night due to the heat.
Man in the Mirror
Yoga really is a never ending journey of discovery, you can start with a physical goal, for example of doing a backbend and realise the achievement was all about breathing properly to get into the backbend, and that the pose, the end result wasn’t the best part at all (what do they say; it’s about the journey not the destination). There is always another more challenging pose to follow once one is “achieved” there is always something else to possibly strive for and believe it or not when you let go of the ego, changes in the body just happen, the journey of the self is never ending. You can start with the goal of wanting to lose weight and realise that holding a balance and being encouraged, educated and commended by your yoga teacher was so uplifting that you felt so good and you gained body confidence, acceptance and without realising it you have lost weight by shifting the focus. The person in the mirror you started to love to look at. “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it”
I’m only here for Savasana
The thing that makes me the happiest as a teacher The thing that makes is seeing the journey in others. For it is others selfI start all my Vinyasa flow classes with a pranayama me the happiest as a discovery, the little achievements from coming back (breath exercise) to focus on the now, to let go of the five minute dash from the car park and the shopping teacher is seeing the to class and seeing their progress, health benefits and smiles that makes me love teaching. I try and introduce list of worries work or home… then I follow with a journey in others. the way children look at yoga to my class, children yin pose, while our body is cold (you haven’t warmed aren’t so serious, they don’t puff and pant like they are your muscles yet) you actually work on fascia the lifting an ego or heavy weight, and they dance with connective tissues, ligaments and joints. Then after playfulness. In my Rocket class, when we are doing inversion practice going over the alignment of some foundational poses like Down Dog for example, handstand hopping, I say, “pretend you are ten years old (it’s always good to check in and recap, so you don’t cause injuries) the again and in your back garden, no one is watching, you are just having cardio sequence of a flow begins. After 55 minutes of a combination fun”, and everyone laughs, it shouldn’t be that hard … Peter Pan quote; of flow and seated postures and closing postures (like Ashtanga but a “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be different focus or sequence every class), we end in the hardest pose of able to do it”, as adults we forget this… Yoga does so much more than all, Savasana. Lying still for a few moments so the body is reaping the the physical… it changes the way you look at life and teaches you to benefits of the practice, healing from the perhaps exhaustion of the breathe in what you need and exhale what you don’t. muscles. Remembering to heal the body, heart and the mind, Savasana is the most important pose… and you might even get an Indian head massage at the end if you have worked hard. Pick n Mix
Every teacher is different, we all have a different personality, background, training, life experience and niche, finding the teacher who motivates and inspires you the most is key because you want to feel comfortable and encouraged so you continue to go back to class and see the benefits yoga has to offer. I encourage you to try yoga, to pick a style, to try as many different kinds until you find the teacher or teachers that fit you.
Shelley teaches Rocket Yoga 6.45 am Wednesdays and Hot Yoga Flow 7.30pm Thursdays – both open level. Yoga and Hot Yoga Classes are complimentary for Health Members and Hotel Residents. TIPS TO THE PERFECT GRASS COURT GAME
With the grass court season upon us and our glorious courts looking impeccable, we catch up with our resident coach Shaun Wilson, who gives his top 5 tips to the perfect grass court game.
1

3
FOOTWORK
SERVE AND VOLLEY
PLAY AGGRESSIVELY
Stay light on your feet with a wide low stance; this will put you in a good athletic position allowing you to adjust at the last moment as the bounce can be unpredictable. It will also keep you at a better height to deal with the lower bouncing ball.
The serve is often people’s biggest weapon on grass, following it to the net is a great way to keep pressure on your opponent and force them into a return they would normally not play. It also takes the risk of getting a bad bounce out of the equation.
Points on a grass court are normally much shorter and are often won by the player dictating play. Try to get the first hit in allowing you to play closer to the baseline and take time away from your opponent.
4
5
USE THE SLICE AGGRESSIVELY
RETURN CLOSER TO THE BASELINE
A good slice can be very effective on grass; the ball will keep low and skid through the court forcing your opponents contact to be lower than normal. A drop shot can also be a good way of catching your opponent off guard!
The ball can move away from you fast when returning especially if your opponent has a good slice serve, returning closer to the baseline cuts the angles down and allows you to get the ball to your opponent’s feet if they are serve and volleying. When doing this you will more than likely have to shorten your backswing to keep the contact in front.

C
oming soon to a blank wall near you… if ever a car was a ‘poster child’ then this has to be it. A direct descendant of the original, which for me was the Countach – for millions of others it was the Miura and for others perhaps the Diablo – Lamborghini models that supplanted other models (of the female variety!) off from valuable wall space and fulfilled all our dreams! And the fact that the brand new Aventador S that I was about to test drive was wearing the same purple that we first saw on the 1990s 30th Anniversary 200mph Diablo made it even more of a showstopper. Our day began at Millbank Proving Ground. As you may know not just anyone is invited to the super-secret Area 51esque facility where numerous manufacturers covertly test upcoming or test models. Here every conceivable type of ‘real world’ road surface and some not-so-real have been created to test cars to their fullest. The not-so-real being an oval and banked track where you could hit speeds of 200 mph+ if you dare! Lamborghini invited a very fortunate few to see the newest model – the Aventador S. This is the heavily updated version of Lamborghini’s V12 supercar and replaces the old ‘plain’ Aventador. The updated exterior of the car was designed by Lamborghini’s head of design Mitja Borkert. It isn’t a purely cosmetic facelift, either. In fact, there are so many mechanical improvements that it’s actually easier to think of the ‘S’ as a completely new and not just improved model. The S now has permanent four wheel drive and a slightly updated suspension which is controlled by the ‘Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva’ (LDVA) unit in four selectable modes – Sport, Strada, Corsa, and Ego (individual). The major update to the ‘S’ is the fitment of a four-wheel steering system that allowed the engineers to completely retune the car’s chassis and steering system which in turn makes the car much more agile and thus more stable.
HAULING Azzy Asghar test drives the newest Lamborghini – the Aventador S
94 STOKE PARK
Taking the car for a spin (or actually not spinning!) while performing slaloms around cones at the track was all the evidentiary proof we needed! The car was beautifully balanced and hugged the road and made maneuvering incredibly easy. They are so pleased with it that they let us drive the ‘old’ Aventador and the new ‘S’ model one after the other to fully appreciate the difference. The new model has slight tweaks to its design and most noticeable is the front spoiler and splitter – which looks ever more menacing and alluring. Inside the cabin is as evocative a place to sit as always and the driving position is perfect as you sit surrounded by Alcantara, leather and carbon fibre. The Aventador S sits ready to steer into the hearts of another generation’s dreams.

DS Cars – You’re the one that I want – by Azzy Asghar
few months ago we were invited to the Dorchester Collection’s uber-luxury country house hotel Coworth Park for the launch event of the incredible DS 7 Crossback – the first of a new generation of models being introduced by DS Automobiles. The DS brand, as you may know, is a spin-off from the Citroen brand and is now identifying as a standalone brand with a full range of automobiles planned for the year ahead. So when the phone rang and they asked if we’d like to really stretch the cars legs – via a nice drive to Paris – we naturally responded, “Mais oui, bien sur!” The trip was organised to coincide with the Paris leg of the E-Prix – which is the electric vehicle equivalent of F1 – and in which DS cars has a very vested interest. Those bright sparks at DS Automobiles don’t miss a trick (pun intended!!). Electric cars are the future and the e-prix was an indication of the way the company is headed – very quickly! – in the years ahead. We stayed in downtown Paris at the very chic Hotel Molitor – the hotel famed for the world famous lido where the Bikini was first displayed – very French indeed! Designed for customers who are in tune with the latest trends and appreciate beauty – I am now talking about the DS automobile and not the Bikini – the DS combines the latest technological innovations, bringing in new levels of driving comfort and performance – all beautifully realised in the 300 mile journey from London. The DS 7 Crossback features a wide range of innovations. Going down the path toward autonomous driving, technologies such as DS Active Led Vision, DS Connected Pilot and DS Driver Attention Assist increase the overall safety of the vehicle for drivers and passengers alike. The dynamic body lines and new diamond-effect grille are fantastic design elements that would impress even the most design-savvy consumer. The interior ergonomics are comfortable and stylish, featuring multiple options for ambiences that reflect the DS personalisation concept. In the DS 7 Crossback, there is a particular emphasis on the light signature. The jewel-like LED modules of the DS Active LED Vision headlights are recognisable by day or night. I was offered the

opportunity to take the car out for an evening drive – something I don’t typically do. What I soon realised was that this was to show off the even more impressive DS Night Vision. This technology dramatically increases night-time visibility through the use of an infrared camera installed in the front grille. The camera recognises objects, people and animals at a distance of up to 100m and displays the enhanced view of the road ahead in the dashboard. As the vehicle approaches an object, a red box appears around it, further identifying the potential danger. The DS 7 Crossback is the first C-segment vehicle to incorporate this type of night vision technology, and as a driver you’ll be quite grateful for it. Citroen is known for its safety standards, but this camera goes above and beyond. In addition to all these safety features, the car is just wonderful to drive. The higher seating position is comfortable, not cumbersome, and the handling is superb for an SUV model. The interior design is futuristic and contemporary, but not so over the top that you can’t relax while you drive. It remains practical for those in search of more seating room from an industry innovator without the astronomical price tag. For the quality of the design, extensiveness of the technology and luxurious feel, the DS7 is well within reach – especially at a starting price below £29,000. In Paris, CEO Yves Bonnefont, announced that, “Starting in 2025, each new DS will be launched exclusively with electrified powertrains. The ambition is very clear: for DS to be among the global leaders in electrified cars in the market.” The car we drove will be eventually replaced by the launch of the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 4×4, a hybrid petrol model, followed by their first all-electric model which will be showcased at the Paris Motor Show in October. The DS 7 Crossback will be officially released in Autumn 2019, offering four-wheel drive, 300 bhp and a plug-in range of 50 km. DS has been a major player in Formula E since its inception, and the e-prix championship has played a key role in directing and developing their electrification strategy and technology. The future for DS looks not so much grease but very lightening! www.DSautomobiles.co.uk
