Agri Commodity Update Commodities In News India's Rice exports between April and July of 2017-18 financial year edged up 1 percent from a year ago to 4.15 million tonnes on upbeat demand from Senegal, Benin and Iran, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) said. The country exported 1.57 million tonnes of Basmati Rice during the first four months of 2017-18, rose 1.02% as compared to 1.56 million tonnes in the same period last year. Export of non-basmati Rice during the period recorded at 2.56 million tonnes, up from 2.54 million tonnes a year earlier. India exported 47052 tonnes of Wheat during April- July FY19, down sharply from 107694 tonnes in the same period last year, according to APEDA data. Horticulture production in the year ended June is pegged at 306.82 million tonnes, up 2.05% from the previous year’s 300.64 million tonnes, according to the third advance estimates of horticultural production, released by the Agriculture Ministry. The latest projections, however, are slightly lower than the 307.2 million tonnes estimated in the second advance estimates released in May this year. The production of fruits is expected to cross 97 million tonnes, thanks to an impressive increase in the output of many fruits, particularly mangoes, which registered 9% growth. Production of vegetables, on the other hand, is projected to be close to 180 million tonnes, marginally up from 2016-17. A slight slide is expected in the yield of major vegetables such as potatoes, onions and tomatoes. Production and exports of Palm Oil from Indonesia, the world’s largest producer of the vegetable oil, rose in July from a month earlier, said a Reuters survey of two industry groups and a state palm oil research firm. Palm oil production is expected to have reached 3.897 million tonnes in July from 3.45 million tonnes in June, according to the survey.
ECONOMIC NEWS
Production of onion, potato and tomato has fallen marginally in the 2017-18 crop year ended June 30, agriculture ministry said today. As per the ministry's third advance estimate, onion output is likely to be around 22 million tonnes (MT) during the reported period, lower than 22.4 MT in 2016-17. Similarly, potato production is estimated to remain flat at 48.5 MT as against 48.6 MT in 2016-17, while tomato output is projected at 19.4 MT as against 20.7 MT earlier. However, the overall production of vegetables is estimated to be higher by one per cent to 179.7 MT over the previous year, the data showed. In case of fruits, the output is projected at 97 MT, higher by 4.5 per cent from the previous year. Total horticulture production is estimated at 306.8 MT, up 2.05 per cent from 2016-17.
Basmati grown in Punjab this year is likely to witness a major reduction in use of pesticides and fungicides that lead to rejection of export consignments from India. Alarmed by hurdles in export of rice from India, the state government is reaching out to farmers through Gurugwaras, public meetings and social media to dissuade use of Acephate, Cabandazim, Thiamethoxam, Tricyclazole and Triazophos—chemicals responsible for higher residue level in rice. “There will be significant decline in use of hazardous chemicals in rice this year that cause hurdles in exports,” KS Pannu, Commissioner Food and Drug Administration Punjab told ET. “Any adverse effect on export of rice will have adverse effect on Rs 50,000 crore business in India and hit hard economy of the state,” he said. He maintained that an exhaustive awareness campaign is underway by joining hand with pesticide dealers, commission agents farmers and rice industry. Punjab Agriculture University has already recommended alternatives to these five pesticides and fungicides. This season, Punjab, is expected to harvest a record output of rice.
