WEEKLY AGRI COMMODITY REPORT Commodities In News  With the Goa posting annual increase in the Cashew production, the government is all set to regenerate about 5,000 hectares of old Cashew plantations in next 10 years to further increase the yield of Cashew in Goa. The department of agriculture will implement the Cashew plantation rejuvenation scheme under the National Horticulture Mission. Presently, the total area with the Goa Forest Development Corporation under Cashew cultivation is 8,971.037 hectares. During the year 2017-18, the Cashew production in Goa was 28,012 tonne as compared to 24,396 tonne in 201617 and 17,549 in 2015-2016.  In the past two months, the rupee has depreciated by almost 2 per cent. Exporters and analysts are expecting weak rupee to help in boost exports and support prices of agriculture commodities. Farmers are likely to benefit from getting higher prices for their produce. Contracts for commodities such as Basmati Rice, Groundnut, Soyabean meal, Cotton and Mentha Oil, the harvest of which will begin in the next one month, are currently being signed by exporters. These are usually signed in dollar terms and with the local currency ruling low, exporters will get more rupees for the dollar earnings.

 The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), the country’s largest commodity exchange in terms of market share, has commenced trading in Rubber futures contracts from August 16. The new contract is aimed at offering a hedging solution to participants in the Rubber value chain, including growers, traders, exporters, importers and tyre manufacturing companies among others, said a statement by the exchange. The underlying quality of the contract has been fixed as Ribbed Smoked Sheets 4 (RSS4) with the lot size pegged at 1 metric tonne (MT) with compulsory delivery option. The price for 100 kg is quoted Ex-Kochi (Ernakulam), exclusive of all sales/GST.

ECONOMIC NEWS  Heavy rainfall in southern and eastern India has boosted water levels in the country’s main reservoirs by an average 9% in the last one week, according to data from the Central Water Commission (CWC). Farmers and analysts said judicious utilisation of the water in reservoirs in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu can ensure water availability till kharif planting of 2019. On Thursday, these dams together held 84.743 billion cubic metres (bcm) of water, which was 12% higher than last year’s levels, but 4% less than the 10-year average, the CWC data showed. Last week, the capacity was 77.554 bcm. “The reservoir position is definitely in excess in the south Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while in east India it is good. A matter of concern is west and northern states, but with monsoon season going on, the situation can improve there too,” said Masood Husain, chairman, CWC. “Major reservoirs in Kerala — from Idduki to Mullaperiyar — are full and gates to drain the excess water have been opened.”  Indian farmer has turned `lakhpati’ with an annual income of Rs 107,172. But about 52% of them continued to be indebted, a survey by agri and rural lender Nabard showed. Agricultural households, which accounted for 48% of rural households, earned Rs 107,172 during 2015-16 from cultivation, livestock, non-farm sector activities and wages/salaries, a survey on financial inclusion released by Nabard said. The survey defined farm households as families having over Rs 5,000 as value of produce from agricultural operations in the year preceding the survey. For all rural households, the average annual income stood at Rs 96,708. The 48 percent of the rural families are agricultural households. At these levels, farm income grew at a compounded rate of 12% per annum from Rs 77,112 per annum according to an NSSO assessment in 2012-13. The income levels for 19 out of 29 states are above all India average and 15 states recorded annual compound growth of above 10.5% between 2012-13 and 2015-16.
