Global markets at a glance Japan's Nikkei share average eased for a second day on Wednesday hit by concerns about a possible U.S. government shutdown, while Tokyo Electron Ltd bucked overall weakness on news of a $7 billion-plus takeover of the tech company by Applied Materials Inc. The Nikkei shed 0.8 % to 14,620.53, moving away from a nine-week high of 14,816.65 hit last Friday. European shares dipped early on Wednesday, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 0.3 % at 1,254.31 points. The index has slipped 1.4 % since hitting a five-year high last week. The euro zone's blue-chip Euro STOXX 50 index was down 0.4 % at 2,912.07 points. Wall Street Update U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew warned that the United States would exhaust its borrowing capacity no later than October 17, though analysts reckon it could keep paying its debts to at least the end of the month. Previous day Roundup It was a choppy session for the market on Wednesday ahead of September series expiry tomorrow. The Sensex fell more than 260 points in intraday trade, but recovered three-fourth of losses in last hour of trade. The 30-share BSE benchmark was down 63.97 points to close at 19856.24 while the 50-share NSE benchmark lost 18.60 points to 5873.85. The September series has been strong so far with the equity benchmarks rising over 8 % with more than Rs 12,000 crore of foreign money inflow. Index stats Bank Nifty & Bankex both declined 0.93% & 0.94% respectively, the sectors which were in downside move with Nifty in yesterday’s session were; AUTO [down 8.09pts], Oil & Gas [down 116.09pts], REALTY [down 6.85pts], FMCG [down 77.75pts] traded downward and the sectors advanced were: IT [up 4.10pts], TECK [up 23.85pts], PSU [up 51.29pts], Metals [up 100.71pts],Consumer Durables [up pts], Power [up 28.03pts], Healthcare [up 117.64pts, Capital Goods [up 114.18pts].
