A Word From Schalk

Performance highlighted

Dear Colleagues, As we take on the challenges of our businesses and make progress on the path to ensuring that AEL is the best Company that it can be; I would like to highlight our performance year to date and also ask that each and every one of us, does our very best to deliver on the objectives we’ve set ourselves. To succeed on our strategic journey, which we’ve termed “The Next Stretch” our performance and everyday work must be underscored by foundations that ensure the company’s success and sustainability into the future. How we are performing so far… Safety: Performance year-to-date has been poor with 4 Recordable incidents during the month of May. Two of these incidents were MMU related. I have asked the senior leadership and would like to appeal to everyone in the business to ensure that safety is uppermost in how we do things. We are all accountable for our safety and must ensure we do things 100% safely at 100% of the time. Please make sure your safety switch is on at all times. Financial performance: AEL had a fantastic month in May. Year to date, our performance is way ahead of budget. Well done to everyone for this sterling performance. We’ve recorded some very good results by the various regions including South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Zambia, Burkina Faso as well as Mauritius.

As we approach the half year mark, I would like to ask that everyone makes every effort to ensure we continue to keep the focus and deliver sterling performance, be it in debt collection, cost saving, product delivery, purchasing or managing internal processes. Let us all do it with diligence and dedication in order to do the best and most significant work. In the coming months we will be engaging with the business as a whole on key initiatives being put in place that are poised to ensure that we stretch ourselves and challenge each other in a way that we will grow as a company and as individuals. I therefore ask that everyone keeps an eye out for the developments and communication that will come everyone’s way. I want to thank you for your support and commitment to AEL thus far and into the future . Let us all ensure we continue to help our customers to unearth wealth and deliver on ensuring we are relevant and constantly evolving. Best regards,

k

warm this winter

AEL prides itself in being a responsible corporate citizen by assisting the communities in which we operate and conduct our business. One of AEL’s annual Corporate Social Investment initiatives is the winter campaign. This year AEL initiated the Hands and Feet Campaign which entailed providing the children at Thuthukani Centre in Tembisa, with warm items of clothing to withstand the blistering winter chills.

The campaign was run by AEL’s CSI committee in conjunction with Champions of Wellness who encouraged all employees to donate gloves, socks, beanies, slippers, scarfs, blankets and any other items of clothing in support of this noble campaign.

4

The Hands and Feet Campaign is the one of three employeedriven CSI initiatives for the year. Next month employees will participate in the Mandela Day 67-minute campaign at Thuthukani Centre and in December employees will generously contribute towards the Back-to-School campaign where AEL sponsors school uniforms and stationery to learners. “I would like to thank AEL employees for their generous contribution. The clothing will help keep our children warm this winter. A warm child is a happy child,” said Jane Nkosi, Thuthukani Centre Manager.

All Aboard would like to extend our gratitude to all employees who have supported the Hands and Feet Campaign.

The legal department is divided into three subdepartments, namely Corporate Governance, Risk Management and Compliance. Meet Sifisile All Aboard takes great pleasure in talking to Group Governance, Risk & Compliance Legal Officer, Sifisile Ngwenya who joined the AEL family in December 2012. This unassuming professional flits from being a legal eagle at work to being an adrenalin junky who literally has the wind beneath her wings when at play. Give us a brief background of your career path? I was in practice in the commercial and litigation areas for about 4 years and then decided to venture into the legal corporate arena. I am happy with my decision as I see great potential for growth. What is your modus operandi? Is it aligned to the AEL Way (confidence, care, courage)? I am methodical, thorough and efficient. I display confidence in my area of expertise, carry out my duties courageous ensuring best practice and I engage with my colleagues in a caring and considerate manner. This encompasses the AEL way. What major projects are you currently engaged in? We are embarking on Compliance Campaign for the entire AEL Group, which entails ensuring that, AEL in its many facets as a company adheres to the laws of the countries that it trades in. This means, we need to ensure that as All Aboard © AEL Mining Services

a company we are operating legally wherever we are and in whatever we are doing. Do you see yourself as a leader or a team player? I am both a leader and a team player. I have a great rapport with my colleagues and enjoy working as part of the team. However when the task at hand requires me to take leadership, I step up to the plate and accept the challenge. I believe we all have the potential to lead by example. What is your vision/ goal for the future within AEL? That’s a work in progress, it’s not quite clear yet as I am still settling into my new environment and role. For now it seems that my vision keeps changing as I am excited to be part of the AEL family. My goals keep shifting and are gaining in magnitude. Tell us something interesting about yourself? I have too many interests to mention and fear that if I had to mention one or a few of them, all the other interests will feel discriminated against. On a serious note, when away from the corporate world I am a bit of a dare devil. My free spirit draws me to weird and wonderful places. I recently found myself bungy jumping and now have my eye on attempting skydiving. Second Quarter 2013

Nomthandazo on a delicious road trip

All Aboard’s Ayanda Zici chatted to AEL’s ultimate go-getter, Nomthandazo Sithole, SA Business Support Administrator. In the corporate world, Nomthandazo fulfils the duties of Chief Administrator of the AEL & Anglo American Edge portal; creates, manages and populates the SA Business monthly SHEQ and TRIR data reports; and ensures company SHEQ standards, systems, records and procedures are implemented and complied with, in all the SA Business Structures. In her private capacity, Thandi – as she is affectionately known by her colleagues, is an adventurer in and out of the kitchen. She has been selected to compete in season 2 of SABC 3’s The Ultimate Braai Master competition. The competition is a 60-day epic journey where fifteen teams of two participants compete against one other in a gruelling braai-inspired road trip. The contestants are set to travel across South Africa, from the banks of the Kosi Estuary, through Mpumalanga, Lesotho, Free State, Eastern Cape, and Northern Cape to the winelands of the Western Cape. The challenge will see the teams use their creativity to reinvent iconic braai dishes to avoid elimination and go further in the game. “I entered the competition with familyfriend and team partner, Andrew Leeuw. While watching the final stages of season one of Braai Master I realised that the challenge was anything but complex for me,” stated our natural born-braai master. “Making it through audition stages to the final 15 has been a life-changing experience for me. I am excited about this journey and very optimistic that the competition will launch greater opportunities for me.” AEL’s braai guru is geared to put her cooking skills to the test and describes herself as someone who has chutzpah (being audacious or having a lot of “guts”). She expects to walk away with the ultimate prize money of R500 000, a shiny new Renault Koleos 4 X 4 valued at R340 000, and long-lasting memories of this once-ina-lifetime experience.

“I am excited about this journey and very optimistic that the competition will launch greater opportunities for me. ” 10

AEL admires Thandi’s CONFIDENCE and COURAGE and wishes her team, called ‘’Sum-ting Fresh’’, a fulfilling journey and the best of luck. A word to Thandi from AEL: Keep your Safety switch on at all times during your travels and remember to handle the braai tongs with CARE!

AEL Safety

Keeping our Safety Switches On Towards the latter part of last year, ISCP embarked on a safety journey to encourage leadership, communication and direct involvement of employees in Health and Safety. The workshop addressed how certain behaviours can discourage and adversely affect colleagues. Participation was impressive with 90% of attendees being SHE Representatives. In attendance were Moss Sibiya (ISCP Operations Manager), Tibor Szana (Director: Department of Labour), ISCP Plant Managers, ISCP SHE practitioners, ISCP ETD Practitioners and SHE Contributors. The programme was intended for all participants to share their experiences in the workplace and take all lessons back to the organisation. These lessons are aimed at assessing, and monitoring, and changing behaviour that currently exist in some parts of the organisation.

The ISCP Operations Manager, Moss Sibiya delivered the keynote address in which he emphasised the need for behavioural change from all delegates and their co-workers. Safety can make you or break you,” he said, “if we don’t change our behaviour and take responsibility for our actions, we will never achieve our objectives. But if we do change our behaviour, it will assist us to seek and employ better ways of following existing company procedures, standards and policies”. He encouraged delegates to actively participate in the activities of the day and help formulate an action plan to address and improve their SHE performance. Tibor Szana, Director of Major Hazard Installations and Explosives from the Department of Labour delivered a presentation on the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

SHE Representatives were also given an opportunity in their breakaway groups to come up with plans to improve our SHE performance. The following topics were addressed: l l l

How ISCP management can involve SHE Representatives in improving our SHE performance How management can engage SHE Representatives in improving our SHE performance How SHE Representatives’ interactions with the shop floor can be enhanced to improve our SHE performance

An ISCP SHE Representatives pledge was drawn up and signed by all stakeholders at the workshop. At the end of the workshop, Moss presented the ISCP SHE performance awards for 2012.

HR’s Michelle Visser’s baby Kristen was born on 12 May weighing 3.55kg. All Aboard congratulates the proud parents and welcomes the new arrivals to the AEL family.

The old adage “She’s daddy’s little girl” rings true for Norberto Terclaves and Leonard Thipe from the Quality Team. Their precious princesses have them wrapped around their little fingers! Both dads were spoilt rotten by their daughters Ashleigh and Ndalo on Father’s Day. This picture was taken at a trip to a Blue Bulls rugby game at Orlando Stadium earlier this year. All Aboard trusts that all the proud AEL dads enjoyed a happy and decadent Father’s Day with their children.

AEL’s hidden talent Group Products to Market Manager, Derek Anthony’s 16 year old daughter, Angelique, has always had a passion for singing, acting and dancing. The multi-talented, Grade 11 pupil at Holy Rosary School in Edenvale, was recently cast in the role of the Princess in the Pretoria Youth Theatre’s production of Aladdin called “Aladdin and the four tea thieves”. The Pretoria Youth Theatre was founded in 1989 with the intention to provide opportunities for pupils to hone their performing arts skills. Currently, the Theatre has thousands of children enrolled, making it the largest Youth Theatre in Gauteng. Out of over 300 hopefuls, the Director of “Aladdin and the four tea thieves” selected a cast of 25. Angelique was one of the lucky few. Rehearsals began in earnest every weekend and during this period doting dad Derek offered moral support and transport to his beautiful princess.

“The production comprised a stunning array of costumes, spectacular lighting, impressive sets, top-notch singing and dancing, including spontaneous ad-lib interaction with the audience. It was a class act from the opening scene. Watching my daughter being a part of this production, totally enthralled me. I am indeed a proud dad,” beamed Derek. The musical score and lyrics were specially written for the production by Ryan Graff and Angelique sang two duets with Aladdin. All Aboard congratulates Angelique and wishes her well in her future performing arts endeavours.

AEL’s Commercial Services department expressed their solidarity with organisations and individuals fighting against the abuse of women and children by dressing in black on Black Friday. The initiative was spearheaded by Tanya Swanepoel who encouraged her colleagues to participate. “South Africa has one of the highest incident rates of rape and abuse to women and children. Such violent crime is so unnecessary and even more difficult to deal with when directed at innocent children that can’t fight back!” stated a passionate mother of three, Tanya Swanepoel. “We decided to participate in the Black Friday campaign to help raising awareness in our workplace and local communities. Collectively we can make a difference if we all choose to stand together and voice our opinion instead of leaving these subjects unspoken about. We feel that more can and should be done to help victims of abuse.“ The message rings loud and clear not only on Black Friday but everyday – create awareness to protect our women and children from this societal evil. You could be the difference.

Wayne’s word Executive Director: Southern Africa Business, Wayne Du Chenne is renowned for unearthing a wealth of quirky expressions.

AEL in Action The AEL Action Cricket team, known as the Hot Shots, plays in the corporate league against other companies, in a mixed league of four women and four men in each team. Team members meet once a week to play, and are ranked second on the log.

This quarter, Wayne whets our appetite for his vocabularic gems with the following analogy:

Action Cricket is an exciting, fast-paced, indoor game that last for approximately 70 minutes. It combines fun, fitness and competition, and it simplicity allows people of all ages to play: men, women, young, old, cricketers and non-cricketers. The game involves the basic principles and skill of traditional cricket: running, batting, fielding and bowling, with teams in leagues competing against other teams comparable in ability.

“Wait for the tide to go out then you’ll see who’s wearing costumes and who’s not!”

Team coordinator, Leisel Baker, who is naturally competitive and enjoys being active, began playing Action Cricket three years ago and has never looked back.

Definition: the truth will eventually surface. We eagerly await the next wonderful word from Wayne.
