In our Movers and Shakers section, you get to learn more about the latest member of our Exco, Denvor Govender who shares his illustrious career journey and enlightens us on his plan to align his team’s goals to our AEL objectives. AEL Paying it Forward demonstrates how AECI partners with organisations to assist communities in which we operate and conduct our business. The AEL Energy section turns the spotlight on our Running Club colleagues who support one another through participation in events such as the Slo-Mag and Comrades marathons. AEL Inspiration highlights the perseverance of Mandla Tshaya who succeeds academically against all odds. His success bears testament to his strong willed nature and positive outlook.

One of our BIGGER values is Innovation. The ISAP Quality team boldly stepped up to the challenge by introducing a new innovation that has led to drastic cost savings. Mpotseng Raphadu, Quality Control Manager, oversees five laboratories that conduct quality tests for products manufactured at ISAP. Mpotseng often expressed

Actions speak louder than words

Being a responsible driver in mist and fog

Contributor: Derek Rumble

We take great pleasure in announcing the birth of the newest member of the AEL clan. Meet Nic Dreyer’s (Regional Manager – Northern Cape) beautiful little princess, Emilize born on 6 April 2016. The ISAP and ISCP plants hosted the annual IS Development Programme Closure Ceremony on 6 May 2016. According to Peter Jordan, Development Consultant, “In 2012, it was determined during the assessment of performance of ISAP, that a leadership programme needed to be introduced. EXCO therefore initiated a leadership intervention, beginning with leadership surveys and then, informed by this the roll out of specific leadership modules. On the job coaching also formed an important part of the intervention. As part of the new structures implemented in Initiating Systems in January 2014, was the introduction of a new level of supervision, known as Lead Operators or Team Leaders. This gave rise to the need to put those selected for these positions through a leadership

a y a h s T a Mandl

Meet Mandla Tshaya, a sterling example of our BIGGER values. Mandla, who has been in the employ of AEL for 10 years, is currently an auto assembly S10 operator. He has been bold in rising above his physical challenges and becoming empowered through education. Earlier this year, he graduated with a Master’s degree.

In remembrance of 16 June To commemorate National Youth Day, ISCP employees proudly wore their school uniforms in remembrance of the young heroes.

Born with a physical disability which resulted in a major speech impediment, he has undergone more than 10 operations since birth. This resilient young man decided to take matters into his own hands, applied his mind to his studies and emerged victorious. Barely able to articulate his words, he decided to hit the books and fulfil his dream of attaining a degree. After his first degree in Chemical Engineering, he realised that the sky is the limit and went on to register for post graduate studies. According to him, disabilities should not pose limitations but should present opportunities. Mandla is fully engaged in any task that he attempts both at work and at home.

At AEL we prioritise your safety. In line with good driving practice, we would like to offer you tips on how to keep safe when confronted by foggy conditions while driving. Adhere to the following driving measures: • When driving in fog, reduce your speed and turn on your headlights to make sure that you can be seen. • Always control your speed. You need to allow for enough space between your car and the one in front of you. • Keep your minimum safety gap to three seconds in ideal conditions; with the decreased visibility fog causes, this interval should be increased substantially. • The lamps should be used when your view is less than 100 meters in front of you. • Do not use your high beam headlights during fog. The bright light affects your vision by creating a reflection of the mist, which lessens your ability to see. • Don’t rely on your parking lights alone, they do little to increase your visibility in daytime fog. • Don’t use your emergency flasher. Studies have shown that drivers are attracted to flashing lights and tend to drive into them inadvertently. • Consider the drivers behind you and what they are seeing. • If you drive with your emergency flashers on or keep tapping your brake pedal, you’ll make them nervous and they may try and pass you, a procedure that places both your lives in danger. • Use the edge of the road as a guide rather than the centre line, to avoid running into oncoming traffic or becoming distracted by their headlights. • Remember that other drivers have a limited sight distance and that fog can leave roadways slick. • Signal your intentions early, and when you use your brakes, don’t stomp on them. • If you can’t drive any further, pull off onto the shoulder of the road, getting your vehicle completely off the road in a protected area from other traffic. • Most importantly, if you cannot see, you may not drive!! We would like to urge all drivers to follow these suggestions in an effort to avoid accidents. Source: www.arivealive.co.za

and operational excellence development programme. This was run in 2014 for ISAP and 2015 for ISCP and played a significant role in embedding the new structure. To further embed the leadership concept of Care and Growth, Legitimate Leadership ran further development programmes and advanced development programmes in 2015. Those who participated were recognised at the closure ceremony and awarded certificates for the following categories: Lead Operator Development Programme; Advanced Lead Operator Development Programme; First Line Abridged Development Programme; First

“I believe that I am responsible for my success in this world. So I was not demotivated by my physical disability but used it as a stepping stone to achieve success. Focus on what you are good at and not what hinders your progress. Not being able to speak clearly does not mean I cannot read or write and function with a purpose. I would like to thank my biggest supporter and “work brother”, Sibusiso Tshabalala, who has nurtured and motivated me even when I wanted to give up hope. He has shown me that I can overcome disappointment such as not being successful for positions I have applied for at AEL. He inspires me to be the best ME that I can be” said Tshaya.
