Making Lincoln better
iwanis Club: Korganization of volunteers geared iwanis International is a global
toward changing the world by serving their community. Since 1922, the Kiwanis Club of Ruston has continued to support various organizations and activities in Lincoln Parish and surrounding areas. With the motto, “Serving the Children of the World,” Kiwanis members strive to promote health and education to all children and youth.
Initially, the Kiwanis Club of Ruston was chartered with only 50 members. The organization now has a membership of 85. It is a part of the Louisiana-MississippiWest Tennessee District of Kiwanis and is also run by 11 board members that have successfully led past service projects. Within the city, the club is known for its annual Pancake Day. Each year in November, the major fundraiser is held at
the Ruston Civic Center. “This event is more than a fundraiser but also a social gathering for the entire community,” said Dwight Anderson, a Kiwanis member. The fundraiser started in 1951 and has continued successfully throughout the years. In 2011, tickets sales for breakfast and dinner meals earned $24,000. The money earned was used to sponsor various service projects. Leadership and guidance are just a few qualities provided to the youth through the Service Leadership Programs. The Key Club, Circle K, Builders Club and K-Kids are organizations sponsored by local Kiwanis Clubs. Each club receives funding and assistance from Kiwanis. The Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high-school students in the world. Similarly, Circle K is the largest collegiate service organization in the world. The organization has advised several of these groups in the community. They helped charter the Ruston High Key Club in 1943, the Louisiana Tech Circle K in Various prominent members of the Ruston community are members of the organization that has served the area for 90 years.

Sin August of 2011, Jessica Harrison, of Choudrant, has been on a ince winning the Anytime Fitness Extreme Makeover Challenge
personal journey to lose weight and get healthier. In the last year she has overcome challenges and obstacles to shed pounds, and does it with her family in mind. And, it is a good thing exercising has been proven to provide an energy boost because during the day Harrison is a full-time mom to 2-year-old Callie. “Since I’ve started working out, I’ve become more active with my daughter, she said. “I take her outside to play and we run around everywhere. THE RIGHT TO SIGH Local man devotes his career to helping people see
f you ask John Reas if he is thankful for the work Mel Arnold I did in helping him correct his vision, you would hear a very sincere
approaching families for consent for donor eye tissue upon the death of their loved ones or family members, Arnold said. “If the family gave consent, we took them into a surgical environment and removed the part of the cornea for transplantation. From there, Arnold said the donor tissue is sent to be tested for any type of disease or infection that could be passed along to the recipient, and if it is clean, Arnold it is sent to the ophthalmologist, who then begins the transplantation surgery. Arnold said he was the person responsible for removing the tissue from the donor’s cornea, something he did not think he would be doing with a background in nursing.
and emphatic “yes.â€? “If you can imagine closing your eyes and thinking that that was going to be all you would see for the rest of your life, and then opening them up and seeing light, I can’t even tell you how good that feeling was,â€? he said. “I would be blind today, but my vision is still near perfect, and I am so thankful for that.â€? It was around 1992 when Reas said he came in contact with Arnold, who recently retired from his position after 20 years at the Louisiana Lions Eye Bank, and started the road to changing his life. “I came in contact with Mel through a corneal transplantation,â€? Reas said. “I was almost blind. I had a corneal defect in my left eye, and I was already having problems with my right eye. I was really dependent on having something done.â€? Reas was looking to correct his vision problem through “I can’t tell you enough the feeling of gratitude that I have a cornea transplant, a procedure which takes donor cornea for being a part of the whole process, and to know that tissue and transplants it into the patient’s eye. someone can see because of some small thing that I did.â€? “These transplants may sound rare, but they are actually very common,â€? Reas said. “Every day (in Louisiana) there are around 250 people on the waiting list for a cornea and — Mel Arnold, retired Tissue Recovery most of them are just waiting on a donor.â€? The one day from a group wanting to interview me for the position person doesn’t have to have the same blood type or be cross of tissue recovery coordinator for Northeast Louisiana,â€? he said. matched with the donor.â€? “The job required me to hold that position at all the hospitals and The man responsible for helping Reas receive that transplant medical centers in Northeast Louisiana. There are around 30 total, was Arnold, who had just started with the eye bank himself. so I knew I was in for a busy time.â€? “My job began at the Lions Eye Bank in 1992, and it entailed Arnold said he began training at the eye bank to remove donor tissue, and over the years he watched his skills get better and better. “They trained us very thoroughly,â€? he said. “But we still were having issues, and we weren’t able to do as many transplants as we would have liked.â€? Reas said when he was waiting for his donor cornea tissue for his surgery in the early ’90s, getting donors was a much more challenging endeavor for those looking for a cornea transplant than it is now, and that Arnold was one of the main forces behind changing that trend in North Louisiana. “Mel pioneered the way in this part of the state,â€? Reas said. “Before he came along, there weren’t many hospitals going in to take the time to request and recover the eye tissue.â€? $UQROG VDLG DW Ă€UVW YHU\ IHZ KRVSLWDOV ZRXOG DOORZ WKH eye bank to request donor tissue from families, meaning the supply of tissue to help those in need of a cornea transplant was slim to none. “It took a lot to get into the door, a lot of talking and

HT persuasion,” he said. “But I was ÀQDOO\ DEOH to get in that door, and the hospitals worked well with me over the years.” Arnold said that persistence working to get donations from those at hospitals even led to the formation of the Louisiana Request Law, which mandates that all hospitals are required by law to approach families upon death of a family member or loved one for the purpose of donating organs upon meeting certain requirements. While obtaining consent from family members was important to Arnold, he said he was more concerned with making sure the families were comfortable with the organ donation they promised.
“It just makes me feel so good to know there is a law on the books that makes people at least have to talk about organ donation,” he said. “Not being offered the option of donation is something no one should have to miss out on.” Arnold said helping give sight back to Reas and the hundreds of others he helped over his FDUHHU JDYH KLP JUHDW MR\ DQG IXOÀOOPHQW “I think that being part of this whole process of going in and talking to the family to get tissue, and then helping someone who may go blind waiting on the darkness is an amazing thing,” he said. “I can’t tell you enough the feeling of gratitude that I have for being a part of the whole process, and to know that someone can see because of some small thing that I did. I am overjoyed to know I am a part of that.”
Arnold and Reas both said people should consider being organ donors because someone never knows how much they can change someone’s life even after death. “Organ donations are up to the family of the deceased after they pass,” Reas said. “So it is important to talk to your family about donation.”

CYB R
BATTLEGROUND:
Defending the family online viruses designed to take down governments and From people looking to steal bank information and identities to
sexual predators searching for their next victim, the Internet is a haven for those looking to stir up trouble. :LWK WKH ,QWHUQHW OLWHUDOO\ DW PRVW SHRSOH¡V Ă€QJHUWLSV LW has become increasingly important for residents to learn how to keep themselves and their children safe while spending time online. But, simply unplugging and disconnecting is usually not the best way to do that, since most people need the Internet for work or school purposes. With the boom of social networks in the past few years, Internet safety has
become all the trickier. Now, people willingly place a great deal of personal information on the Internet where — even with privacy controls — any number of unsavory characters can learn all about an individual’s personal business and life. Local computer experts and law enforcement personnel agree that the best way to stay safe is to be aware of the dangers. PERSONAL SAFETY Jean Gourd, assistant professor of Computer Science at Louisiana Tech University, specializes in cyber security. While cyber security is a little different than Internet safety, many of the same principles apply. “Cyberspace is the domain in which digital information moves, Gourd said. “The Internet is a part of cyberspace. But so are cell phones, buoys in the ocean, sensors that detect movement in your house and report it to a central location, and so on. The Internet is just a bunch of connected computers and devices. Because of this simple format, Gourd said that keeping oneself and one’s children safe on the Internet isn’t something that requires an advanced degree. “Staying safe online turns out to be pretty simple if you implement simple, straightforward ideas, Gourd said. “Ultimately, the most important is to simply be aware. Knowing something about computers and the Internet is something Gourd said will help immensely to keep individuals and their families safe online.

PARENTING INTERNET TIPS UĂŠ Keep computer in family area to better monitor your child’s activity. UĂŠ Regularly spend time online with your child to learn about his or her interests and activities. UĂŠ Teach your child to end any experience online when he or she feels uncomfortable or scared by pressing the back key, logging off and telling a trusted adult as soon as possible. UĂŠ Establish an atmosphere of trust and understanding with your child by not blaming him or her for uncomfortable online experiences. UĂŠ Discuss the difference between advertising and educational or entertaining content and show your child examples of each. UĂŠ Establish strict rules for ordering products (and then monitor credit card bills). “Computer literacy is not — and should not be — simply about being able to use a computer anymore,â€? Gourd said. “Learn how to instruct a computer to do something you want it to do by programming. Even basic programming will change the way you interact with a computer, think when using one and increase your awareness to the potential dangers of interacting in cyberspace. Knowing how things work helps to make you more aware of potential vulnerabilities and how to prevent them.â€? The Triad is a set of three computer practices that Gourd recommends to help individuals keep their system safe. “Know and use The Triad,â€?
