or the second time, Louisiana Tech University presents “KAB Man,” a one-act action piece based upon characters of the “Keep America Beautiful” campaign on Oct. 23. At the suggestion of a member of the Keep Lincoln Parish Beautiful Committee, Professor Mark Guinn, director of Tech’s school of performing arts, and the advanced acting class of 201011 wrote the green-inspired original stage production, which took the stage that year and again this month. “Bobby Dowling, the director of Louisiana Tech University Campus Recreation, asked if there was something the committee could do for the kids, and I said sure,” noted Guinn. “I searched the Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful websites and looked about for inspiration. I discovered the KAB Man webisodes and the idea hit me — why not do a classic action adventure show in the style of the old Adam West Batman series? “I also love theatre for the magic, spectacle and the Living Well r 0İłļįIJŀ

For some, the “Junk Revolution is a new and fashionable style of decorating. For others, it is an extension of their green way of life. But for Amber Upshaw and Juanita Coker, it’s in their DNA. Beginning at an early age, they were taught to see the beauty and usefulness in cast-off and broken items. They learned their craft at the knees of their “tinkering grandfathers. They hauled them to dumpsters, gathered curbside treasures and gladly accepted leftovers from friends’ projects. Fast forward two decades. The lessons were well learned and held close to heart. Two darkhaired girls are now mothers passing the traditions on to their children. They met and an instant bond formed — junkin’ sisters! And so they became RustN-Lace. Rust-N-Lace is part retail, part party planning, part vintage

Glenwood is the exclusive provider of the new mobile AngioScreen program. The AngioScreen program places Glenwood on the cutting edge of workplace wellness by providing revolutionary vascular screenings to employers in the region. The AngioScreen mobile screenings can be brought to the worksite and provide employees with immediate information regarding circulation, risk of heart Mobile disease and stroke. Screening will also be screening held in random locations for area for members of the community. employers If you knew a quick and break out of your day could save your life, community would you take it? AngioScreen is an easyto-take, non-invasive screening lasting less than 10 minutes. The painless screening provides participants with immediate information about their circulation, risk of heart disease, stroke and abdominal aorta. Key screenings include an ultrasound of the left and right carotid arteries, an ankle brachial index A 10-minute, (ABI) which reads blood pressures in both legs; and a simple EKG which non-invasive WHVWV IRU DWULDO ÀEULOODWLRQ DQG DQ DEGRPLQDO DRUWD preventative aneurysm (AAA) scan. effective and can help prevent catastrophic problems like stroke, ruptured aneurysms or death,” Harry Donias, M.D., Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, said. The screening gives participants valuable information about their vascular health that can be shared with personal physicians. The importance of early detection is evident when viewing the statistics. Every 30 seconds an American has a heart attack, and every 45 seconds an American has a stroke. Every hour there are 100 deaths from vascular disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide. The carotid arteries (the main arteries in the neck) carry blood to the brain. Narrowing of the carotid arteries increases your risk of stroke and 85 percent of all strokes occur because of plaque in the arteries. Thickening of the inner lining of the carotid arteries, which is how plaque begins, is correlated with blockages of the heart’s arteries. An AngioScreen gives participants immediate results about their carotid artery and circulatory health. he best time of the year to sit around the dinner table and eat a warm Southern meal is during the colder seasons. With fatty, comfort foods being so prevalent in Louisiana culture, especially during the holidays, staying healthy can be easier said than done. David Welch, personal trainer at the local Anytime Fitness, explained how during the winter months most people do not enjoy running outside, so it’s very important for them to stay active and get in the gym for healthy lifestyles. Welch said that grocery shopping for exercise is not enough to stay healthy. It’s important to keep constant movement. “Although being cold burns more calories than being warm, the lack of movement won’t help,â€? explained Welch. Sharon Jackson, local trainer and director of Sharon’s Slammin’ Women’s Bootcamp, explained that the key to consistent healthy living is planning. 1 in 8: Breast Cancer Awareness Kitty DeGree Breast Health Center is partnering again this year with the ULM Kitty DeGree School of Nursing to provide a public event that will feature an expert panel of healthcare professionals to discuss breast health and breast cancer topics. The “1 in 8â€? event is to emphasize the statistic that one in eight women is affected by breast cancer. It is designed to ensure that the women and men of our area understand the importance of being an informed patient and the need for regular screenings. We believe it is vital for the public to have access to comprehensive resources and services for breast health and breast cancer. It’s important for one to understand that breast cancer awareness is an ongoing awareness. Age is the most important risk factor for breast cancer. The older a woman is, the greater her chance of developing breast cancer. Current rates suggest that 13.2 percent of women (or one in eight) born today will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives. This statistic is based on population averages. QUESTIONS ME & MY COFFEE 1. How often do you drink coffee? 2. How much coffee do you typically drink in a day? 3. What is your favorite kind of coffee? 4. Do you have a favorite coffee place? 5. Why do you drink coffee (taste, need, social, etc.)? 6. Do you notice any |b8†¼| FbÂŒbo¼´§ 7. If someone told you coffee was good for you or was horrible for you, would either of those statements affect your coffee drinking?

4. Starbucks really is good, however, McDonald’s has surprisingly good coffee as well.
6. Yes, I get a mental boost, probably caused by the natural caffeination. Coffee also contains natural antioxidants. While I don’t actually notice an effect from that, I do feel better knowing it.
5. Taste, pick-me-up, wake up

“The Journey Place is ...
WHERE A WALK WITH GOD BEGINS.â€? On Sept. 9, Temple Baptist Church opened the gateway to an enhanced journey for preschoolers and children of Ruston. The Journey Place, a two-story addition to Temple’s facility, provides new ways for children to make their spiritual journey through life. It features enhanced opportunities for education and play to make participants happy, along with increased security to give parents peace of mind. Tiny Trekkers (babies through NLQGHUJDUWHQ DQG 6XPPLW .LGV Ă€UVW through sixth graders) learn with talented teachers and workers leading them in a place designed especially for them. “We want this to be a place where children grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord,â€? Minister of Childhood Education Sally Hearn said. “We want our babies to be nurtured and cared for in such
a way that they know the love of Jesus. As children learn about God, they learn that He has a plan for each of them. “Our school-age children are on mission for Christ, Hearn explained. “As they make the journey with Christ, we want them to discover what it means to live a life fully committed to Him. We want them to know that they can be missionaries for Him wherever they go. She emphasized that The Journey Place is not just for current members of the church.
“Temple is a warm, friendly church, and we want others to come and experience The Journey Place so they feel welcome and will want to be a part of what God is doing here, she said. Temple’s regular weekly activities for children include Bible Study at 10 a.m. and worship services at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays. Wednesday nights feature Missions and Music (including age-graded choirs) from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. for 3-yearolds through sixth graders. Childcare is provided for ages 3 and under during all services.

SLEEP! I JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH
TIPS TO HELP YOU GET MORE REST
o matter what someone does for a living, there are a few problems many people deal with on a daily basis that just require a little extra effort before they are solved. A common problem many Americans share is the inability to fall asleep and maintain a good night’s rest, something that seems impossible to achieve to many who have tried counting sheep and over-the-counter sleep aids for years with no results. There are plenty of things people can do to get great sleep, and area health and wellness experts say getting some exercise every day is just part of the process to getting better sleep. “Obviously if you do some

Having a plan is half the battle.” Watching the foods that you eat can also play an important role in the sleep you get, said dietician Carol Yates.
“If you know you are going to bed in the next hour or so, don’t go stuff your face full of foods and drinks with lots of sugar or caffeine in them,” she said. “Doing that will just make it harder for you to sleep. You are going to get restless from eating or drinking that food, and you’ll have to wait for it to digest to get the best sleep.” Yates said one of the best things people can do to get sleep is to make sure they are comfortable in the place they are sleeping. “You won’t sleep if you aren’t comfortable with your surroundings, and
your body isn’t comfortable,” she said. “Do your best to keep the house cool and to always have the right pillows and blankets for you on the bed.” Representatives from various SV\FKRORJLVWV DQG SV\FKLDWULVWV· RIÀFHV LQ 1RUWK /RXLVLDQD VDLG WKDW SHRSOH DOVR need to be sure that they are keeping their phones or other electronic devices away from them when they sleep because it may create sleep problems.
