IZAYJAH MCKINNEY is lifting the veil with his Afrocentric art.

At just twenty-two years of age—Izayjah McKinney is a young inspiring Afrocentric Artist that creates various mediums of art including painting, poetry, and even photography.

What all started from a sixth-grade art class is now a passion and growing career for Izayjah McKinney. Along with creating to nourish his mind, body, soul, and spirit— Izayjah has set his targets on creating art that lifts the veil on the systemic racism and prejudices that have been built and bred into this country.

While there is two sides to every coin, there is also two sides to Izayjah’s art, as he mentions “I also want to share in speaking on the plight & struggles, of the black community while also bringing about change and shedding light on the beauty, strength, and tenacity of which we have within and around.” says Izayjah.

Regardless of the type of art and message Izayjah is conveying, this wise twenty-two year old is intentionally and intuitively shedding his own light on the generational trauma, fueled by racism and social injustices in this country—as well as the beauty and resilience that has been cultivated into all melanated people, through overcoming systemic oppression.

TELL THE READERS ABOUT YOURSELF.

Peace & love asé, my name is Izayjah McKinney. I’m twenty-two years of age. I’m a black artist born and raised in Sacramento, CA. I’ve been doing art in a serious manner for about a year in a half. Aside from art I enjoy reading, poetry, manga, watching anime, nature walks, and listening to podcasts. I also like going on hikes, learning random facts, living holistically, doing breathe work, yoga, and meditation.

WHAT IS YOUR STYLE OF ART?

Frankly I’ve never really felt I fell under a category. As I recall over the course of this adventure, I’d like to say I don’t pertain to one specific genre. Genuinely, I do what feels good which can sometimes be portraiture, expressionism, Afrocentric, surrealism, and therapeutic, while sometimes its multidisciplinary… I guess I’d say my art style is more intuitive in means of I create what flows and feels good to from the mind, body, soul, heart and spirit.

WHERE DOES ART BEGIN FOR YOU?

I’d guess I could say it began in sixth grade when I took my first art class. I started off with cartoons later growing into one of my main interest, portraits. From there I continued creating art…but I’d say that art really begin for me when I found therapy in it in my late teens when I had come to a nadir in my mental and emotional health. As I was changing my narrative, I found art to be very therapeutic and healing, so from there on I’ve been pursuing art that creates safe havens for others…

WHO OR WHAT WAS THAT MAJOR CATALYST THAT INSPIRED YOU TO PARTAKE IN ART?

I’d say one of the catalysts was to be an advocacy in several ways. Innerstanding how art can aid in healing of the mind, body, soul, heart, and spirit I wanted create more space for the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual awareness. I found that viewing and reading art

that resonates with you can be transformative. Another catalyst being I want to share the narrative of the plight, beauty, strength, truth of my culture, being black and of Afrikan decent I want to bring innerstanding…awareness. I found that viewing and reading art that resonates with you can be transformative. Another catalyst being I want to share the narrative of the plight, beauty, strength, truth of my culture, being black and of Afrikan decent I want to bring innerstanding…

WHAT DOES YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LOOK

LIKE FROM START TO FINISH? (HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE COMPLETE)

For the most part I’ll create an abstract concept and build off that depending on the medium I’m using. From there, I usually just add as I go. As far as time goes that could anywhere between 30 minutes to several hours. My longest piece to date took approximately 60 or so hours.

WHAT USUALLY MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE A NEW PIECE?

I am motivated by wanting to spread selfawareness and healing within and around. I enjoy creating safe spaces for people to feel and be just as they are mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Creating art that’s therapeutic and resonates with the mind, body, soul, heart, and spirit. I also to want share in speaking on the plight & struggles, of the black community while also bringing about change and shedding light on the beauty, strength, tenacity of which we have within and around.

OTHER THAN YOUR CURRENT FORM OF ART? DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER MEDIUMS OF ART YOUR PASSIONATE ABOUT?

Photography and poetry are some other forms I’ve been doing on the side. Within time I do plan on releasing a poetry book series… that’ll correlate to self-awareness and innerstanding.

6epiphany MagazineSeptember 2022
“IZAYJAH WITH HIS POWERFUL PIECE THAT SPEAKS OF THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE ALL IN ONE THAT REPRESENTS ALL OF THE MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN THAT HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES TO UNJUSTIFIABLE BRUTALITY.”
September 2022

DO YOU HAVE ANY BIG PLANS FOR FUTURE PROJECTS? (IE. LARGE SCALE, MAJOR COLLABORATIONS, NEW MEDIUMS OF ART)

Within time I do plan on doing murals but at the current moment I’ve got some big canvases for my Afrocentric series. As well I do have some collaborations coming through. And in time I’m going to work with sculpting and play around in that field…

DO YOU EVER FEEL BURNOUT? IF SO, HOW DO YOU OVERCOME IT?

Unfortunately, in times of burnout/art block, I remind myself it’s okay to feel this way and give my self-time to rest from my usual creative ways. I tend to have a list of several activities I engage in instead. For example, I like reading poetry so sometimes I’ll pick a poem and depict what I read, while other times I just go out and sit in nature and listen to the world: birds chirping, wind rubbing against the trees, running water…overall I give myself space to not be so serious.

WHAT DOES YOUR ART REPRESENT TO YOU?

I’d say the narratives of discovering healing, acceptance, love, somber, peace, strength, self, and the innerstandings of the heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit.

WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL MISSION WITH YOUR ART?

I have quite a few but one of them is to advocate and create more conversations & safe havens for the mind, body, soul, heart, and spirit within and around in means of spreading and bring about awareness and innerstanding to ourselves mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?

It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting, it may not happen overnight, but it will happen someday, and it will feel amazing. You are the garden and gardener, the creator and creation. Let your thoughts be seeds. Speak this sentence into existence. “My dreams are attainable, and I will reach them, I am an abundant and attractive force.” May peace, love light and healing be with you in all you do within and around, asé.

this is a foundational technique that really helps to have in your back pocket at all times. RIGHTEOUS TECHNIQUES TO SCALE A MURAL

Mural scaling techniques are a must for any artist working on a large scale. When you are up close to the wall, it becomes all-too easy to get the wrong proportions and to lose a sense of the whole.

But with the right technique, you’ll have no problem getting it right.

So, how do you scale a mural design?

The four most popular methods are:

Let’s dive into all four (plus a bonus one), showing you how to enlarge an image for a mural.

GRIDDING

Gridding allows you to easily keep track of the scale of the image you are reproducing. It’s also fairly easy to do.

First, take the image you want to enlarge and overlay a grid onto it. Then, you begin your mural by drawing out a grid with the same number of blocks in the same proportion on the wall. Now, you can paint your mural block by block using your grid.

This is one of the most reliable methods in mural scaling because it gives you very strong reference points. It also limits the space you are responsible for at any given time, meaning there is a much lower chance of making mistakes around scale or proportion.

Gridding is a great place to begin with murals, but eventually, most artists will want to explore other options. However,

GRID METHOD
12epiphany MagazineSeptember 2022

THE DOODLE GRID TECHNIQUE

The Doodle Grid (also called Lazy Grid) technique is a fun way to shake up your mural scaling while still keeping a lot of the strengths of goodold traditional gridding.

In this method, you begin with the wall you are going to paint. Make doodles on it, following a general grid pattern. These doodles can be numbers, letters, simple shapes, or any other kind of mark.

Then, take a picture of the wall. Over this picture, overlay your mural design using a photo editor like Photoshop. When you are finished, lower the opacity of the mural layer. Now, you can see those markings (or “doodles”) and where they are in relation to the mural that’s going over them.

When it’s time to paint, you can match the details to the doodles already in place.

PROJECTOR

A projector is an extremely powerful tool for painting a mural, but they also come with a couple of strong caveats.

To use a projector, simply use it to display the art you want to enlarge on the wall you want to paint. The further back you move the projector from the wall, the larger the image will appear — all in perfect scale.

With everything in place, you only need to trace the image, et voila!

13 epiphany Magazine September 2022

While it is extremely effective, a projector is not good for projects if:

• You are painting outside during the day (the sunlight will make it hard if not impossible to see the projection)

• You can’t pull the projector back enough or get the angle correct

• You don’t have access to electricity

All that being said, if a projector works for your space, it’s definitely the single best tool for mural scaling!

IMAGE OVERLY

This system works somewhat like a Doodle Grid, but it can take a lot less time and works just as well depending on the surface you are painting.

Image overlay begins by taking a picture of the wall you are going to paint. If it has a lot of marks and details on it already (like pipes, cracks, doors, windows, etc.) then you might be fine as is. If not, you can add a few markings to give you enough reference points.

Now, use photo editing software to overlay the image you are going to paint over the picture of the wall. Reduce the opacity of the mural design so that you can see the details of the wall underneath.

Just like with the Doodle Grid, you should now have enough to go on to keep your scale.

Bonus: Freehand

This method of enlarging art for a mural is really all about not having a method at all!

You might be surprised to learn that many of the best muralists more or less replicate their mock-ups freehand. Some artists even conceive murals entirely on the wall itself.

It’s brave and it’s bold, but sometimes it’s just wild enough to work. If you aren’t doing a commission and have a lot of freedom with the project, it’s worth trying out.

Whatever method you choose, from the trusty grid to the fun-loving freehand, happy mural painting!

INTERVIEW

What’s good man? Tell the readers about yourself.

Sup foo. I’m Gabriel Lopez aka gsultimatic.i recently graduated from the school of hard knocks with a PhD in wrecking shop and being hella DOPE! I’m a family man two beautiful kids, beautiful wife that I don’t deserve. I’m a veteran of the Graff game and now make art now as a tax paying citizen. I’m a full-time automotive painter at the best shop in town. Born and raised in Sacramento, CA. I host the dopest art shows and the dopest podcast HAVE A DOPE DAY it’s been all gas no breaks since 2021!

What inspired you to become an artist?

I was born this way. It’s instinct to me, I do what comes naturally to me.

*The Ability to speak with eloquence and fluency*
28epiphany MagazineSeptember 2022

What is your genre of art? How did you become drawn to that style of art?

I painted Graffiti ILLEGALLY on the street for the first half of my life. I’m not an “artist “ . I’m a Graffiti writer making art right now. I was a kid growing up in south Sacramento in the 90s and just saw Graff. I knew ppl that wrote Graff. Gang Culture was around, and I saw how people lived it. My uncle got out of prison and told me war stories and it scared the hell out me, so I just picked Graff. Best/worst move of my life.

I understand you have a podcast tell the readers about what you’re doing with that.

My podcast “HAVE A DOPE DAY” happened organically. Mario Lopez the

owner of WE ARE SACRAMENTO suggested I do a Graffiti podcast after an interview with another platform. I immediately thought no way. Then as the week went by, I started to think “what would look like if I was to do it.” Not just graffiti but street Culture in general from here home Sacramento, CA. All the beautiful dope street life I seen growing up here. I will highlight those people! Great idea Mario Lopez!

What motivates you to create and go after your endeavors?

Survival, mental health, my ego, seeing other people come up in a real way from the groundwork I have done. It makes all the B’s worth it. When someone I’m inspired by is inspired by Me.

How do you overcome creative blocks?

I never actually stop creating. I constantly fill my day and my mind with different creative mediums or types of art. Interviewing people is an art, music is an art, business is an art, painting cars is an art, management of time is an art, management of your own personal finance is an art, I survive life through art. If I ALLOWED a creative block to beat me, I might as well die.

Describe your dream project?

HELLA HELLA paint. HELLA canvases, hella metal, hella space, hella good music, hella time good food, and we see what happens?! To just create with freedom and no expectations.

How do you manage your work-life balance as an artist?

Communication, execution, and time management

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

Learning something new every day. Reviewing something valuable. I’m brutally honest with myself and where I am in life. I try my best to not allow my own emotions to dictate my energy. I allow things to “play out” by practicing patience.

What impact do you want your art to have on the world?

Not the world. Just my home Sacramento, CA. More importantly my two kids Leo and gg. I would like to be the person they think I am. Now that would be DOPE.

What advice would you give to a new artist?

Focus on YOUR ENERGY. The internet isn’t real! Get a real job, put yourself as artist in the position to say NO to things that don’t fit, YOU’RE goals and long term plan for yourself. When art pays the bills, you have to take what you can get. I’d like for you to take what you want and get paid doing it

Anything you would like to add?

Thank you WE ARE SACRAMENTO! Thank you to everyone in Sacramento that has made all this possible if you guys don’t support none of this is possible! I Really Love my Kodefendant’s and all the Ever-Lasting Kings still rocking the streets risking it all for the love of the game!

How can people reach you? What are your socials/website?

JACK OF MANY TRADES, MASTER OF ALL.

The world is full of talented people and it’s even more full of those who have mastered numerous trades and skills. Like the legend known as “Primetime” aka Deion Sanders, who excelled in Professional football, Major league baseball, and now as a college football coach. Even Ashton Kutcher is a rare individual. He began his career as a model, then shortly after becoming an actor, and is now a successful Venture Capitalist—earning lucrative returns for his early investments in Airbnb and Uber. Or Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who excelled as a pro wrestler, entrepreneur, producer, and currently as an actor.

Professional football player, major league baseball player, ESPN analysists, and now a college football coach.
32epiphany MagazineSeptember 2022

You may be thinking: “Wow, I would love to be able to do that!” But what if you could? What if you could become a jack of all trades and what if you could become a master of all?

Well, we’re here to tell you that this is possible— and not just possible; it’s absolutely possible. All it takes is consistent effort and dedication, but once you get going on this path, everything else will fall in place sooner than you imagined.

Becoming A Master Of All Trades

As an artist, craftsman or entrepreneur, being a jack of all trades and master of all is a fantastic thing. It keeps things interesting in your day-today life and it ensures you’re learning about every aspect to elevate your creative output. It can also teach you how to lead by showcasing your authority and knowledge in more than one field. In addition, it also helps show you how to learn things in a fast and efficient way which comes in handy when it comes to troubleshooting and problem-solving. You don’t have to limit yourself to your craft, profession, or line of business. Consider exploring other spheres of business, engaging in some other crafts, and learning new skills.

Being able to do many different things gives you an edge in your career and life because there are plenty of opportunities for growth within each field. For example, employers are always looking for a diverse set of skills in candidates. If you have experience in one area, you might think that this will be

enough to get a job. However, many employers are looking for more than just your past experience when making hiring decisions. They want to see if you can adapt and learn new things on the job as well as being able to learn from others on the team.

If you want to be successful in your life, craft, or career, it’s essential to be a jack of many trades and a master of all. It’s time you ditch the age long adage and mentality of being a “jack of all trades, master of none”, and feel free to explore multiple career fields, skills, crafts, and trades. Who knows, you may just be the next Deion Sanders, Ashton Kutcher, Leonardo Da Vinci, or Elon Musk.
