Athletics

at Episcopal High School

Athletics Philosophy

Episcopal High School is dedicated to the student’s pursuit of excellence and to the joy of learning and self-discovery in a caring and supportive community. Episcopal believes that physical exercise and conditioning are very important to the health of every teenage boy and girl and that habits and routines of exercise begun at a young age are important to lifelong health. EHS is also committed to the values taught by athletic competition. Sportsmanship, self-discipline, and perseverance are often learned through interscholastic sports. Most importantly, Episcopal’s athletic teams provide an opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to learn the value of teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect.

Sportsmanship

Episcopal High School is proud of the behavior and sportsmanship displayed by its players, coaches, and spectators. We value healthy rivalry, encourage spirited and fair play, and appreciate positive support offered by spectators. Episcopal players, coaches, and fans represent themselves, their teams, and their School with pride and poise. We treat visiting teams and officials as guests, extending to them every courtesy. We are modest in victory and gracious in defeat.

“ ehs

is one of the most important places in my life. i represented episcopal with pride every time i had the chance. i wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the opportunity ehs gave me to come from zimbabwe and study in america. the great coaches and athletics facilities at ehs helped me become a better soccer player and also a better person. now i am playing for one of the best soccer programs in the country and thank episcopal for that.” Schillo Tshuma ’12 • Plays Soccer for the University of Maryland

“ my

father has instilled within me competitiveness since birth. needless to say that it is this quality that has always driven my athletic endeavors. coming to episcopal freshman year, i knew that nearly everything in my life would change, but i never thought that this part of me could ever be altered. when i met jaye locke, the varsity field hockey team’s coach, for the first time during the summer of 2007, i never thought that she could change my outlook on the game. through her constant positive attitude, honest advice, and unremitting hard work, coach locke instilled in me passion. she once told me that ‘it’s about standing up, being strong, being confident, being passionate, not giving up – but finding that passion, strength, and love in what we do. . . not necessarily for ourselves, but for others. it’s about doing things to make a difference in this world.’ she showed me through example that you can get so much farther with passion than you ever could with only competitiveness. this lesson has not only changed my game for the better, but also my approach towards each task i take on. it has enabled me to play and will enable me to excel at the next level, williams college, her alma mater. i never thought that coach locke could change my game, i never imagined that the experience of playing for episcopal could change my life.” Cary Hairfield ’11 • Plays Field Hockey for Williams College

Both of these leagues are considered to be very strong academically and athletically, and many member schools receive regional and national recognition. “ the

athletics program at episcopal was a vital part of my personal development. i was initially leery of the multi-season athletic requirement for students, but the opportunity to be a multi-sport athlete was a key component to my earning a division 1 athletic scholarship. our coaches were knowledgeable and genuinely invested in our success and improvement. competing in sports outside of my ‘comfort zone’ exposed me to techniques and people that helped round out my athletic skill set.

" there is no bigger fan of the ehs athletic program than i. i recommend episcopal to any young person seeking a competitive yet caring environment.” Danielle O’Banion ’97 • Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Kent State University

Admission and Financial Aid

Admission to Episcopal is competitive, and successful applicants demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, strong character, and an eagerness to be part of a residential community. Over $4.4 million dollars in need-based financial aid is available each year and supports roughly 30 percent of the student body. Although the School does not award athletic scholarships, Episcopal does strive to make the School affordable to qualified students. In September 2013, students at Episcopal came from 26 states, 18 countries, and the District of Columbia.

“ the

athletics program at ehs is something that i take great pride in. it preaches the importance of discipline and diligence, musts for success as a student-athlete. in college, budgeting athletic and academic commitments can be overwhelming. however, episcopal provided a foundation on how to manage both.

“ episcopal’s

athletics program is bound by passion, commitment, character, and an undeniable tradition of excellence. it was an honor to be able to wear the maroon and black, and to carry on the spirit and tradition of ehs athletics.” Danny Coale ’07 • Plays football for the Dallas Cowboys
