LIVING GOD’S DREAM

By Making Disciples and Making a Difference. OUR VISION Our vision as a diocese is to be a community of disciples committed to following Jesus Christ into the dream of God for us and for all creation. OUR MISSION Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the Diocese of North Carolina seeks to live God’s dream by making disciples and making a difference. We do so by building joyful congregations and other communities of faith, centered on the Gospel, in the communion of the Episcopal Church. We go forth to offer God’s reconciling love to all persons, with special concern for the unchurched, young people and those on the margins of society.

The Bishop Suffragan of North Carolina So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. - Romans 10:17 There is mysterious power in the spoken Word of God. There is something important about hearing the Word of God with our own ears. This is why, in part, Holy Scripture is read aloud during worship. From the third verse of the first chapter of Genesis—“and God said, ‘Let there be light’”—to the giving of the Law to the people of Israel—“Hear, O Israel: The Lord your God is one” (Duet 6:4)—to the parable of the sower in Matthew—“Anyone who has ears should listen!” (Matt 13:9 )— we know that there is something powerful about hearing the Word of The Lord. Before the written word there existed the spoken stories and accounts passed along by faithful witnesses, judges, prophets, teachers and disciples, generation to generation. With this new edition of Gospel-Based Discipleship, I encourage you to continue the daily discipline of reading Gospel passages. In order to help you expand upon this practice, the Diocese is providing you a means of hearing the Gospel read aloud each day by yours truly. You will be able to hear me read the daily Gospel through a brand-new podcast housed on the diocesan website (www.episdionc.org).1 It is my hope that hearing the Gospel read aloud in addition to reading it yourself will offer you deeper insights into the wisdon of Scripture. As you practice the spiritual disciplines of reading (or listening to!) and reflecting on Scripture and praying for your church family, I invite you to extend your relationship with Scripture through study and conversation. Purchase or borrow a Bible with good footnotes—I recommend The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha or Harper Collins Study Bible—so that when you come across a confusing parable, you have some The daily Gospel readings will also be posted each day on the diocesan Facebook page (www.facebook.com/EpiscopalDioceseNC) and Twitter feed (@EpiscopalNC). 1

help interpreting it. Consider acquiring a biblical commentary to enrich your reading. Ask a member of your church family what he or she thinks. Talk to your priest. Most importantly, consider joining a Bible study group, either through your church or online. Engaging with the Gospels on our own each day is a beautiful spiritual practice, but let it be only a first step in your journey through Scripture. The Bible was meant to be read in community, and we are enriched by reading it communally. Herein lies the beauty of using Gospel-Based Discipleship to help guide your spiritual discipline. As you read each morning or each evening, you do so in community with all who use this resource. May you be blessed by this community throughout the coming year. Let us close with the collect for Proper 28 of the liturgical year:

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of ever lasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Rt. Rev. Anne Hodges-Copple Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of North Carolina

What is Gospel-Based Discipleship (GBD)?

Gospel-Based Discipleship is an encounter with the Gospel that is designed to engage people with the Gospel.

Some Ways to Begin

There are many ways to read, study and meditate on passages of Scripture. You should use any approach that helps you engage the Gospel. I encourage you to incorporate this into other ways of daily devotions you may already use. Here is just one method of reflecting on the Gospel.

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Begin with prayer. 1. Read the Gospel lesson for the day. What word(s), idea(s) or sentence(s) stand out to you? 2. Re-read the Gospel (maybe in another translation if available). What is Jesus (the Gospel) saying to you? 3. Re-read the Gospel. What is Jesus (the Gospel) calling you to do? Close with prayer.

In GBD, there are no right or wrong answers.

The engagement is with the Gospel, not with a leader or the search for correct answers. Experienced leaders are not required, and leadership should rotate. Groups and/or individuals using GBD regularly should expect to begin to see their call to mission differently. Some congregations use GBD as a way to focus on what God is calling them to do in their communities. From Bishop Curry

Some Prayers for Use with Gospel-Based Discipleship God of peace, let us your people know, that at the heart of turbulence there is an inner calm that comes from faith in you. Keep us from being content with things as they are, that from this central peace there may come a creative compassion, a thirst for justice, and a willingness to give of ourselves in the Spirit of Christ. Amen. A New Zealand Prayer Book Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Book of Common Prayer O God, who has taught us that your Word is a lantern to our feet and a light to our path: Grant that as this community devoutly reads the Holy Scriptures, we may realize our Fellowship with one another in you, and may learn thereby to know you more fully, to love you more truly, and to follow more faithfully in the steps of your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God blessed for evermore. Amen. The Wolf Shall Dwell with The Lamb by Eric H. F. Law Most gracious and loving God: Strengthen the hearts of your people in this Diocese, That loving you with our whole heart, And loving our neighbor as ourselves, We might, in the power of the Spirit, Obey the call of Jesus, To go into our world as disciples, Making disciples, And making a difference, Through your saving love. Amen. The Mission Prayer of the Diocese of North Carolina

The Baptismal Covenant I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit And was born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge both the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy catholic Church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen. Will you continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? The Book of Common Prayer, Holy Baptism, pages 304-305 The duty of all Christians is to follow Christ; to come together week by week for corporate worship; and to work, pray, and give for the spread of the kingdom of God.

The Epiphany As early as the second century, Christians in Egypt observed January 6 as a feast day commemorating the visit by the Magi, Jesus’ Baptism in the River Jordan and his first recorded miracle (turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana).

Confession of St. Peter As we watch Peter struggle with himself, his life reminds us that our Lord did not come to save the godly and strong but the weak and the sinful.
